nyone that knows me on a personal level will quickly attest to the fact that I can be quite outspoken and unabashed in most social situations. My wife, who knows me better than anyone, can often be found furiously kicking me under a table in an attempt to keep me in check during some of these moments. Now don’t get me wrong, we have an amazing amount of admiration for one another but lately she has been trying to hammer home one bit of advice that I hope to be able to practice as I walk through life. She is always telling me, “Farid, please try to be impeccable.”
It may sound easy enough, since we toss this word around quite freely without really understanding its true meaning, but being impeccable is not an easy thing to achieve and has in fact, only been realized by a hand full of men in our history. Impeccable means “without sin” and as such, I can’t be too hard on myself if I have not yet mastered impeccability during every waking moment – I believe that I am getting close when I sleep! I can also tell you without reservation, that my wife is the closest thing to impeccable I have ever known, and I am very fortunate to have this woman as my guide while I embark on becoming the best I can be (don’t hold your breath though folks, because it might be a long and bumpy ride yet!). I will keep you all updated on my progress as I continue my quest but as for today, I want to take a moment to get you excited about some of the awesome giveaways in this issue, courtesy of our wonderful friends and sponsors in Al Ain. WOMAN WAKES UP MINUTES BEFORE POST-MORTEM
A 61-year-old Russian woman called Lyudmila, has been declared dead twice by doctors. However, she refuses to fade into oblivion. Each time she comes back to life and most recently she managed to do it just minutes before she was supposed to be cut open for her autopsy.
DON'T BE FOILED

When a recipe suggests wrapping chicken, fish or vegetables in foil before cooking, try a lidded dish instead. Instead of lining with foil, just try a baking sheet. It'll taste just as good, and saves wasting aluminium foil which is resource-intensive to produce.
She woke up after spending three days in a freezing morgue. The weird incidents have scared her family and the doctors. She did it not once but twice - once in November last year and then in October this year.
The first time the lady 'passed away', the daughter spent 60,000 rouble on funeral arrangements which included buying flowers, casket, dug grave, food for mourners, according to The Siberian Times. When the daughter went to collect her mum's body, she was asked to wait as the doctors had yet to perform the post-mortem. A few minutes later, a scared doctor alerted her to the fact that her mother was alive. Once the daughter was convinced that her mother was back for good, she had to face quite a few awkward tasks like asking the men to stop digging her grave and requesting mourners not to turn up. The doctors were unable to explain the incident. When you want to say: Nice to meet you! say

Al Ain Zoo Leopard Matched with Soulmate As part of its commitment to conserve arid land species and provide them with an environment similar to that of the their natural habitat, Al Ain Zoo adopted Qais from the Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife in Sharjah at the age of four. Over the years, Al Ain Zoo dedicatedly raised Qais to become a healthy, nine yearold leopard; however, he was still missing much-needed companionship. After years of intense research and as a result of the first Arabian Zoo and Aquarium Association conference organised by Al Ain Zoo in 2013, Qais was introduced to Lubna, a 10 year-old Arabian leopard living in Al Bustan Zoological Centre in Sharjah. Following several tests to ensure her compatibility, Lubna finally travelled to Al Ain Zoo to meet Qais. The two leopards now live together and are carefully looked after by the Conservation Department of Endangered Species at Al Ain Zoo. Arabian leopards are categorised as critically endangered with less than 200 individuals remaining in the mountains of
Yemen and Oman. The species’ dwindling population is a result of factors including habitat deterioration, urban expansion, hunting and a lack of prey. Al Ain Zoo has set-up strategic partnerships with leading zoos, conservation agencies

441 cocaine capsules in their intestines
Abu Dhabi Police foiled an attempt to smuggle 441 capsules containing cocaine. The drugs, which were seized in 4 different cases, weighed 9 kilos 340 grams. The police arrested 5 Nigerians who had hidden the capsules in their intestines as they attempted to smuggle them through Abu Dhabi International Airport over the course of 12 days. The suspects were referred to the public prosecution with charges of drug acquisition and trafficking, while an ongoing investigation will continue to investigate the cases’ circumstances and motivations. Officers from the Ports and Airports Security Department at Abu Dhabi Police had recently suspected five Nigerian nationals, each at different times. They all appeared to be in poor health when they arrived at the transit area in Abu Dhabi International Airport. One of them suffered from pain in his intestines. itouch, you touch and we all
lose touch!
A By JJ Green
re you cheating on your wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, friends and family? In this day and age you’d be surprised to discover that most people are, and they are doing it with their gadgets. I am speaking of course, of your ‘iGadgets,’ phones and tablets.
Remember what it was like when we actually confronted people face to face and relied on human encounters to make decisions or actually spoke in full sentences instead of texting in chat format? Sadly enough, many people today are trading in real live relationships for electronic love affairs. We are becoming less concerned with the here and now in front of us, and more interested in what’s going on somewhere else. Examine any campus today and you will find students sitting and walking around mesmerized by their gadgets. Whether it be at a bus stop, on a train, in a restaurant or wherever you find people, chances are that they have traded good old interactive social skills for a game of ‘angry birds’ or the latest greatest facebook post! I am often at business meetings and it is becoming difficult to remember an appointment that was unfettered by a constant barrage of incoming emails or phone calls from either my end or the person I was attempting to engage in conversation. Going out for dinner with my wife and kids has become more like a symphony of index finger tapping on our instruments of choice as we stare into cyberspace while waiting for our meals to arrive; even the four year old has no trouble joining in on the ipad, which I might add, he has a better functioning knowledge of than his dad!
OK, I will admit that I am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to technology, but I do agree that having cell phones and high tech gadgets are a decided advantage; especially in times of emergency. As much as the presence of cell phones at every occasion disturbs me it has also become quite apparent that I can no longer function without my faithful pinging blackberry. I do however strongly advocate the need for reform when it comes to balancing our addiction to gadgets. Many of us are losing the art and courage required to have face to face conversations and opt for the more impersonal and quick fix text or email solution. As a society we have begun to succumb to our electronic fetishes and are allowing them to consume us. In fact, studies have shown that they have even been sighted as major contributors to the demise of relationships! Fortunately I am not alone in my belief that gadgets and their adverse impact on society are reaching epidemic levels, and there are establishments fighting back in order to regain control of a society gone techno-mad. There is a growing trend of public places like restaurants and libraries that have banned certain electronic devices in an effort to bring humanity back to the basics. There are even an increasing number of resorts and retreats that are asking people to leave their devices switched off or at home while residing with them. Assuming that you are feeling the same way about having lost touch with down to earth and very human social skills, why not create some rules for yourself and family when it comes to your gadgets. • No gadgets what so ever at the dinner table • Turn your work cell off on weekends and enjoy undisturbed family time • At night silence your phone • Limit facebook time for the entire family No electronic devices during nature outings with friends and family I am not suggesting that we abandon technology, I simply suggest we find equilibrium where technology and humanity meet in a harmonious place and we rediscover our social touches and give the itouch a break! GET COVERED
B
One coat at a time By Komal Lakhani
eing an Urban woman can be tough sometimes. On one hand, the urban woman is a smart, savvy and modern leader, and on the other hand, she is understanding, caring and has not forgotten her roots. As you can see, the urban woman is busy and often a risk taker who is not afraid to get down and dirty. This does not mean she cannot maintain her beauty and look like a million dihrams!
specialist working on my skin had the most gentle touch and not only did I not tear up, but I let her finish!
This week we let the newly opened Nail-a-Holics at Wahat Hili Mall show us how they can help the urban women keep her skin glowing and her nails sharp. I started out with a 75 minute Vitamin C facial. The products used were Italian called Histomer, my favourite was the honey fragrant oil used to give me a deep neck and shoulder massage, which relaxed me into a state of oblivion.
I am a huge fan of the ambiance at Nail-a-Holics, where fresh orchids in the center of the room add to the calm and serene experience. They also have paintings displayed from local and expat artists which are on sale and feature a new artist each month. Almost all of the products used in the store can be purchased from them and in addition they offer other treatments like waxing, threading and eye lash extensions.
We women have to bear a lot of pain to maintain our looks and the only thing worse than waxing our legs is getting black heads removed. Every time I went to a salon for a clean up or facial, my eyes would tear up the second the removal stick was placed on my nose. I could never seem to stand seeing the process through to completion in the past. This time was very different; Maria the
After awakening from a semi conscious state and looking flushed (of the toxin from my skin), I was made comfortable in one of the big custom chairs (designed by the owner Mariam Al Suwaidi and the managing partner Natasha Enriquez). Roxy and Diem gave me a basic mani pedi, making sure I was not in pain at any point. They were very professional using packed sterilized equipment, which was opened right in front of me (the urban women needs to watch out for those contagious diseases). Roxy delicately performed nail art using my nail as a canvas. Nail-a-Holics has over 200 regular and 50 gel based nail colours to choose from, along with nail art starting from AED 5 (per nail). You can take your own design or choose a tried and tested nail art from them.
Nail-a-Holics is now open at Wahat Hilli Mall, but I should also mention that if you are too busy to drive down to the mall, they can bring the party to you as an added service. So don’t delay ladies, come check out the latest greatest place in town for all your urban woman pampering needs!

The Greatest Sport Ever
T
ennis is the greatest sport ever assembled. What, you don’t agree? It is possible that millions of sports fans disagree with me. I try not to idolize many things but as I type, I am wearing my favorite outfit that resembles my favorite player. I analyze every tournament draw posted. Nothing distracts me from a tennis game except one of my kids wiping chocolate on the couch. My wife, who I do not place above tennis, is a bigger fan of American Football. I’m sure you have the same passion for your own favorite sport. There is the typical debate on whether we call certain activities a sport or hobby. A friend explained that a sport had to involve physical exercise. Put aside the minor argument of golf or even ping pong. Also, I’m not sure if Formula 1 racing is a sport but I do know they have one of the highest viewing audiences worldwide. We have to consider a mix of precision, skill, mental, and physical ability. From my research, I believe I can arguably narrow a few sports down to being the greatest sport ever. Here is my discussion starter for you. What is the greatest sport of all time?
In no particular order, I’ll start with Cricket. My Sri Lankan friend says that there is nothing like cricket in the world. Like all fanatics, he faithfully attends whenever his team is playing locally. Thetoptens. com, listed Cricket as number four on their list of greatest sports. Their list is based on opinion polls. Is this sport a top ten in your mind? Like me, I’ve got to learn the game better, but so far I can see why it is very popular. American Football is a favorite of mine but its popularity is exclusive to America with the exception of a few overseas exhibition matches. My American friend argued this sport as the best. “The hours of preparation…with intricate and intentional roles and purpose, make it the best. These roles have been rehearsed repeatedly for every scenario.” Many would agree and typically, over 100 million viewers are watching the season finale called the Super Bowl. Football/Soccer however, is a worldwide sport. FIFA even makes exaggerated claims that more than 1 billion will view the World Cup. A rabid fan and friend of mine will claim this football sport is the greatest. “The complexity of football/soccer, the speed of thought, the foot and eye coordination, and the collective attitude with and for your teammates…” The sport of Baseball is worldwide but the American World Series finale is not a worldwide event. However, the MBA league is multi¬culturally diverse. The World Series reaches an average viewership of 10 million viewers each night over a best of seven game nights. Odd note however, baseball was removed from the 2012 Olympics out of lack of interest in the region. In conclusion for those cursing my name already about baseball…Baseball is also one of the most popular sports in various parts of Asia. Our last sport to consider is rugby. Undoubtedly, rugby is a favorite sport in the European countries. The first recognized international rugby match was played between England and Scotland in 1871 according to Wikipedia.org. Rugby is a pure contact sport and a predecessor to popular variations of “football.” Its popularity is worldwide and growing considerably in South and North America. Again, this sport is new to me and I am quickly discovering that the brute force required, speed, and physical abilities of these players, makes this sport one of the outstanding sports of all time. Now you decide. What is the greatest ever?

Give Your Children The Attention They Deserve! By Farid Nouisser 18

Studies have shown that most addicts sighted parental neglect as a major factor leading to substance abuse.
I
n the last issue we touched on the problem of addiction and substance abuse in the UAE and made our readers aware that although addiction in this country has not reached crisis levels, it is very much present and requires our attention. It just so happens that over the past week a very dear friend of mine passed away as a result of addiction related issues, and as I read about the demise of this beautiful girl, I was distracted by the beckoning of my youngest son. “Dad come look at my picture and Dad can you help me put my fort back together and sit inside and play a game with me”, he begged.
Clearly I was busy and preoccupied with my thoughts but declining to engage the little fellow in play, brought back a memory of a conversation I had long ago with the girl who is no longer here to play with anyone. Diana and I were talking about our parents many years ago and fighting back the pain and tears, she described to me a childhood devoid of either a mother or father. It wasn’t that she lacked anything, as her parents had more than enough money to afford whatever she desired, but the one thing she wanted and needed most was the thing she received the least; the time and attention of the two people most important to any child. Diana essentially did a lot of her growing up alone and instead of leaning and depending on the strength of her parents during times of joy and crisis, she adopted the support of a new group of companions that developed into a disease spiraling out of control and bringing her short life to a very tragic end! Parents are the foundation upon which solid functioning adults are built and their attention and support are an essential part of substance abuse and addiction prevention. The influences leading to substance abuse are, and will always be there, but through vigilant parents and their proper care, the risk of addiction is reduced exponentially. There is always that chance that your kids may experiment with substances and as parents you should recognize the signs. If children get into the habit of using drugs and parents fail to notice
the behavioral changes, the risk of having abuse turn chronic down the road is high! There are behavioral signs that should alert you to a problem and they must be addressed immediately. Perhaps your children are asking for more money than usual or you notice that items of value around the house start to go missing. Signs and symptoms parents should look out for can include attitude changes towards family and friends, mood swings and general emotional instability. Physical changes to watch for include a suppressed appetite leading to weight-loss and general fatigue. You should also be able to recognize potential problems at school, such as a drop in grades due to a general lack of interest in school work. Studies have shown that most addicts sighted parental neglect as a major factor leading to substance abuse. Parents, you have the means to properly guide your children to a productive life, and the most effective tool at your disposal is ATTENTION! Spend time with them and speak openly about the dangers of substance abuse and if by some great misfortune the problem has begun, create an environment that is non-threatening and free of reprisal. Addiction can be classified as a disease and people suffering should be treated no different from any other patient suffering from an ailment. If as parents and a community we plan on winning the battle, we can no longer turn a blind eye to the problem. One of the biggest issues facing drug addicts is the discrimination they suffer at the hands of society, and this type of treatment will not lead us to the solution. The first step is to recognize problems and then waste no time seeking the professional help that is available to treat the individuals suffering. The NRC (National Rehabilitation Council) encourages parents to come forward with their queries and leave their shame behind. You would not be ashamed of seeking help for a child suffering from any other disease and nor should you be with addiction related issues. These individuals are sick and deserve a dignified treatment program led by professionals that are ready to help. Let’s prevent tragedies like my friend Diana, by giving our children the guidance and attention they need. Having said this; I believe I have a little friend in a fort waiting for Daddy to paint some pictures. The Source

Juicing
your way to better
I
health
n the recent months, the juice diet and using juices to detoxify has seen a great increase in popularity. Celebrity interviews, documentaries and products are flooding the market to meet the rise in public interest. The sales of juice machines are increasing and many people can be seen sipping all sorts of homemade juice concoctions. So what is this new trend? Is it worth following?
If the juice diet is gone about the right way, the benefits are numerous. Juicing is a chance to take in a very concentrated nutritional source in a very small amount. A lot of fruits and vegetables go into a very small amount of liquid. If you had to eat these whole, you might not be able to manage. Imagine trying to eat a meal like that four to six times a day! You will be able to consume more fruit and vegetable volume by juicing as opposed to eating. More juice means more vitamins and nutrients and that is what the juice diet is about. So, juicing is a quick and easy way of injecting some quality nutrition into your diet. However, what goes into these juices is extremely important. Not all types of juice are good for you and fruit based juices are not the best choice. The sugar content enters the blood stream immediately and your body releases insulin to manage this sugar. This can reduce your energy and make you feel tired. It also increases your likelihood to reach out for sugar laden food. Vegetable based juice is a better option. Greens such as spinach, kale, cucumber and parsley are great choices. Unfortunately, for most people it takes some time 20

getting used to. But if you can make yourself consume these, it offers your body a broader range of nutrients than fruit juices. The low sugar content of these juices also avoids sugar spikes in your blood stream. If you find this really too hard to go through, you can add more fruits to this concoction. Smoothies with oats or ground flax or whey protein powder are great to add in fiber and smooth out energy spikes. Adding protein really reduces the sudden energy release from food and keeps you full for longer because your energy levels are stabilized. Protein isn’t only in meats, beans, and nuts. Many vegetables such as romaine lettuce, broccoli, and collards contain a good amount of protein. There are some fruits that contain a small amount of protein. The juice diet accounts for your proteins along with many other healthy vitamins and nutrients. As for hunger, the juice does fill you up. It isn’t like just drinking water to fill your stomach. Each time you drink juice, you give your body a large amount of vitamins and nutrients. Hunger is the main motivation for our bodies to tell us we need more nutrients and when you consume these in juices, your body does become satisfied. It’s your habitual eating that is telling you to eat. Habitual eating is when you eat out of habit. A good example of this is snacking while watching television. You might not be hungry but you are used to eating a snack while watching TV so when you do watch TV, your body says its snack time. You will get over the habitual eating habits when you go on the juice diet. Here are a few tips on how to successfully juice your way to better health: • Use a variety of produce when you juice by mixing up apples, cucumbers or carrots. You will increase your nutrients this way. • Get a juicer that is easy to clean and dissemble to make it easier for you. • Cut, clean and prepare your meals the night before, and keep them in zipped plastic bags for easy juicing in the morning. And try to drink your juice fresh right after you make it. • ¼ lemon juiced into a cup of warm water in the morning is great for your digestive system and energy levels in the morning. • Try to make your fruit to vegetable intake as 20% fruit and 80% vegetable. If you want to consume more fruits, then keep these for the morning. • The best types of apples for juicing are Granny Smith apples because these have the lowest sugar content. • Juice your small produce first and then work your way up to juicing larger produce. Keep your fruit heavy drinks for in the morning Countless people have had success with the juice diet. Some have been able to get off their medication, while others have felt more energetic and lost weight. As with any diet or diet modification, check with your doctor first to see if it is suitable for your health and lifestyle. Happy juicing!

The Flying Man By Komal Lakhani
N
asser Al Neyadi was born in Al Ain at Oasis hospital and made his very first jump right here in the Nyadaat area of Al Ain. He grew up with a passion for football and as a young man, played for the Al Ain football team. Today he owns a dream that is as high as the sky itself.
Nasser is a professional skydiver who has over 5000 jumps on his resume, along with a world record for base jumping off Burj Khalifa. As the founder of Sky Dive Dubai, he is kept extremely busy and with any free time he can manage to squeeze in, you will find him taking his passion to the many jumping opportunities that present themselves around the globe. We were able to catch up with Nasser on the ground at his Desert Campus one evening to find out more about this ‘adrenaline junkie’. I mentioned that, had we been able to interview him during the day, perhaps we would have 22

al majlis witnessed him in action. Nasser was quick to say “yalla, let’s jump now; darkness is no excuse for being grounded! So how did you get started on this path? “I used to do air acrobatics when I was in the air-force; gradually I began associating with other like minded people for demonstrations and performed coordinated acts for national day parades and other events. By doing these, I wanted to make people understand what skydiving was all about and since then I haven't looked back. I learned that jumping as a civilian is a lot more flexible than military jumping. You get to jump from all kinds of flying machines and can adopt a much more relaxed style.” How long did it take you to set up this project? “Sky dive Dubai has been eight years in the making. No one understood my concept since it was so new; it was new territory from a business perspective, so I did not have any support. After struggling for eight years and repeated disappointment, someone finally understood and supported the project. It was the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who helped me transform this dream into a reality. Now, it’s been five years since we have been open to the public, and are currently operating with two locations in the UAE and are one of the best establishments of its kind in the world.” What is the best and worst part of skydiving? “The best part is when you exit from the airplane; you breathe when you are in the sky and the world below means nothing. The adrenaline rush that follows when you land on the ground is not something you can buy in a supermarket. That has to be earned! There is no worst part other than perhaps the difficulties encountered with big group jumps. There is less space for movement and a higher risk of parachutes getting entangled if someone goes out of sync. You cannot control the movements of other people in a group, and their actions can sometimes undermine the safety of others.” What do you see in the future for Skydive Dubai? “My goal for the future is that I want to have an all local team including the instructors. The Emirati youth these days is caught up with fast cars, contesting with each other and putting many lives at risk. Sky diving is safer than driving, if your parachute gets wrecked when you jump, there is a second parachute to save you. On the other hand, if you are racing a car and your tire bursts, there is no saving you from potential demise and under these and similar
circumstances, many young lives are lost in car accidents every year. I want to inspire our youth and eventually open an academy and university for various air sports right here in the UAE. I want the UAE to participate in extreme sports in a professional way.” If you are a first time sky diver you can do a tandem jump (jumping with an instructor) or take a course and jump all by yourself. So if your sense of adeventure is tingling and the adrenaline pumping, why not head to http://www.skydivedubai.ae/ to find something that is fit for you. Happy jumping!

Saluting the Saluki
F
or those of you who have never heard of the saluki, like some people in our office, it is a breed of dog. Now you may wonder why we are telling you about dogs; well, Saluki is a breed of desert dogs possessing exceptional stamina, intelligence and loyalty. They are highly prized by the Bedouins who also refer to them as Wind Drinker, Daughter of the Tent, Son of the Desert, Desert Eye, and even allow them to share their tents.
Salukis are the oldest breed of domesticated dogs and were often used for hunting and foraging in the desert. Named after the Bani Saluk tribe of Yemen, they belong to the sight hound family which hunts by sight rather than smell. They used Salukis along with falcons which spot the prey and hover over them so the Salukis can chase and catch the prey. There are two types of Salukis; one is the smooth hound called Al Hess and the other feathered ones are called Al Reesh. Salukis start their training at the age of 1 and are hunting by 4. A full grown animal weighs an average of 26 kg and is able to run at a speed of up to 75 km/h. In on-going efforts to protect and support the saluki breed, The Arabian Saluki Center was established in 2001 in Abu Dhabi, and aims to provide professional care for Salukis and preserve the purebred Arabian Salukis. The centre was set up with the support of the Emirates Falconers’ Club by Hamad Al Ghanem, who is the Director, Breeder and Registrar General of ASC and a member of a family which has been actively involved in Saluki breeding for several generations. 24
The Source
The centre also undertakes the registration of Salukis with known pure lineage. The centre has participated in the Saluki World Congress held in Helsinki, Finland, making the UAE the only Arab nation to take part in this international conference aimed at preserving Salukis. They also hold The Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest which is an annual beauty competition held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. The event provides Saluki owners with an opportunity to showcase the skills and characteristics of their hounds. The sport of hunting with salukis is now a dying part of the Arabic culture and since the enforcement of illegal hunting in the UAE, salukis are mainly trained today for participation in beauty shows and saluki racing events, such as the heritage saluki races held on the sidelines of Al Dhafra Festival and HH Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan Camel Festival and Saluki Beauty Show held along with the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Festival. Abu Dhabi is also launching a number of initiatives like building a race track for international saluki racing competitions to maintain the role of salukis in the Arabian culture.

Lets change stereotypes
G
By K.Radhakishan
irls and boys are biologically different, but that doesn't mean we raise them differently. Every child, irrespective of their gender, needs to be taught that the basic values of our society are based on, like sharing, caring, understanding, respect and so on and so forth.
A few days ago my sister told me about a funny incident that happened at home. She said she made her three year old son wear a purple t-shirt, but as soon as my other niece of the same age saw it, she threw a fit and started crying like a baby! When they finally got her to add words to all the tears, she told them, "purple is for girls, purple is for girls, why is he wearing purple, make him wear something else," and then the sobbing continued. Psychology was my major in university, and I understand emotions, but understanding the way a child thinks is much different. This got me thinking and I started researching literature on modern parenting and the age old associated stereotypes. After getting some reading done and relating it to real life experiences, I realized that boys and girls behave differently because we unknowingly teach them things that bring on unwarranted behaviour. For example, even today we tell girls stories of prince charming and most of their toys are predominately pink and 'girly'; on the other hand, we buy cars for boys instead of getting them a doll or a kitchen set. We teach them the ways of the world, but it’s time we modified those patterns and taught them the following:
We need to teach our girls:
1. That there is more to life than meeting your prince 2. That big rigs, trains, dump trucks, and fire engines are pretty cool 3. That boys are not dumb 4. That no one is allowed to hit them, ever!! 5. That they can play hockey, box, and ski jump (even if the Olympics doesn't think so) 6. That they can be political and business leaders
28
The Source
7. That math, engineering, science and information technology are great careers 8. That their health issues are important 9. To say no!!
We need to teach our boys:
1. That it is okay to cry and it is good to express emotions 2. That they can like pretty colours, flowers, sunsets, and cute furry animals 3. That girls are not sissies 4. That violence is not an acceptable way to resolve disputes 5. That women and girls are people, not objects 6. That they can be stay at home fathers 7. That they can play with dolls 8. That even they need to help their parents with household chores 9. That their health issues are important, even if society tells them that only the weak see a doctor when they are suffering 10. If a girl says no, respect her wishes, NO is a NO! This list can go on and on, but you get the gist of what I am trying to say here. Let’s teach the future of this world to be fair, just, compassionate, human and most of all, to treat everyone with equality irrespective of their caste, creed, gender or sexual orientation. If you have useful, tried and tested parenting ideas which will be good for our readers, email them to family@thesourceuae.com or share them on our facebook page and join the discussion.

Cavalia at Qasr al Hosn Cavalia at Qasr al Hosn, an innovative multi-disciplinary production created by Normand Latourelle, one of the cofounders of famed Cirque du Soleil of Montreal Canada, will be performed in a series of shows from February 22 to March 1, 2014. Enjoyed by over 4 million people across North America, Europe and Australia, Cavalia is a lavish production involving 50 horses and featuring 50 riders, aerialists, acrobats, performers and musicians from all over the world. A show unlike any other, Cavalia celebrates the equestrian arts and the strong relationship between humans and horses. The show has been specially adapted for the Qasr al Hosn Festival audience, and is the first show of its kind to be performed in the region. In Cavalia, horses perform together with the many artists in front of a constantly changing digital background projected onto a 60 metre-wide screen, drawing spectators into dream-like virtual environments. Unlike traditional horse shows, Cavalia’s audience face a single 50 metre-wide stage which allows the horses space to gallop at full speed, at times running completely free, unfettered by bridles or halters. Starring 11 different equestrian breeds including Arabian, Pure Spanish and Miniature Horses, Cavalia takes place under a white, 2,440-square-metre big top, rising some 35 metres high that gives the horses an ample playground to perform with their trainers and artists. The tone of the show, embraced by the entire company, is one of mutual respect, kindness, patience, and trust. Audiences have found Cavalia exhilarating in scope, yet touching in the compassion shown by both horse and human. Tickets are now on sale online at www.ticketmaster.ae, at selected Virgin Megastores, or by calling 800 TM UAE (800 86 823). For more information about Cavalia, visit www. cavalia.net

Five family ski holidays 32

Kids’ clubs, wonderlands, car-free zones and adrenalin-fuelled snow parks make family skiing even more enjoyable
I
By Marianne Makdisi
t’s not too late to book a ski holiday, but as anyone who has taken their family skiing will know, it’s important to pick the right resort. Get it wrong and you could end up carting three sets of skis around and wishing you’d only taken your grumpy children as far as Ski Dubai.
The snowy paths and pistes give the place a friendly Alpine feel, with family events laid on all season. At the heart of the resort is the Village des Enfants, where Disney characters and special slopes keep children aged three and older entertained. At night, the floodlit cliff behind the resort adds to its nocturnal ambience.
But choose the right place with enough activities on offer to keep everyone happy, and the whole family will revel in the fresh mountain air and sense of adventure. Whether you’re looking for an authentic Austrian village experience, a purpose-built resort with Disney characters, or have older, daredevil children who are faster skiers than you are, we’ve found five destinations that promise to make your ski holiday memorable for the right reasons.
High above Laax, you’ll find extensive beginner slopes at Crap Sogn Gion, and there’s an excellent ski school with fluent Englishspeaking instructors. Crowned with a glacier offering a lengthened ski season, there are great panoramic views from the top and 235 kilometres of pistes in total.
ALPBACH, AUSTRIA
Credited with being the prettiest village in Austria, Alpbach in the Tirol is known for its friendly atmosphere. The accommodation (mostly welcoming pensions and chalet-style hotels) is built in a traditional style and the fact that the road to Innsbruck was not built until relatively late has helped the resort keep its charm. Sunny nursery slopes are located at village level, as close as 20 metres away if you pick an adjacent hotel such as the family-run Der Berghof. Gondola access to the wooded Wiedersberger Horn mountain is via a five-minute shuttle bus ride. Alpbach is compact enough to make getting around easy, but large enough to offer everything you need, including ski hire, ski schools, a supermarket, restaurants and bars. The village’s two ski schools are both child friendly, and when your little ones tire of the slopes, you can entertain them at Alpbach’s indoor swimming pool or outdoor ice rinks. Ski demos take place in the village and there are options for eating dinner in a traditional mountain hut and sledging back on snow-covered roads.
LAAX, SWITZERLAND
For families with younger children, all three bases (Laax, Flims and Falera) offer ‘Snow Wonderlands’ – ski schools centred around the magician Ami Sabi, where children can also hear stories, sing songs and learn about the forest, animals and mountains. Families with older children will no doubt be impressed by the five terrain parks, and if you really want to score brownie points with your teenagers, time your visit to coincide with one of the two high-profile snowboarding events which Flims Laax hosts every year. Youngsters will also be eager to try out some jumps and tricks at Europe’s first Freestyle Indoor Base, a modern playground for snowboarders, free skiers, skaters and bikers, where a soft landing in a large foampit is guaranteed. YLLÄS, FINLAND An alternative to the tried and tested Alpine holiday is Ylläs in Finland, a picturesque resort with gentle Arctic landscapes perfect for beginners. There’s plenty to delight children, including huskysledding, reindeer sleigh rides and snowshoeing. You’ll also find a playground area by the slopes, as well as a small mechanical roundabout and sledges left lying around for everyone to use. The forests look idyllic in the snowy conditions, and while the accommodation is not slopeside, you can opt to stay in a log cabin with a roaring log fire. To reach the slopes, there’s a frequent, efficiently run bus service. The best time to go is from March to the end of the season, when there’s more daylight.
AVORIAZ, FRANCE VAL D’ISÈRE, FRANCE A functional resort, Avoriaz comprises mainly towering, woodclad, self-catering apartments – not pretty but perfect for families. Perched on a dramatic cliff, the resort is entirely car-free, with horsedrawn sleighs the only vehicles allowed on the roads and ski-in/ ski-out lodgings.
If you have teenagers who are better skiers than you are, you’ll be looking for slopes and instructors that can provide a challenge while keeping your daredevils safe. Progression Ski (progressionski.com), in Val d’Isère, runs a good programme for this age group, and the resort, which is one of the best in the world (albeit expensive), also offers high-adrenalin snow parks. The Three Types of People A teacher shows three toys to a student and asks the student to find out the differences. All the three toys are seemed to be identical in their shape, size and material. After keen observation, the student observes holes in the toys. 1st toy it has holes in the ears. 2nd toy has holes in ear and mouth. 3rd toy has only one hole in one ear. Then with the help of a needle, the student places it in the ear hole of 1st toy. The needle comes out from the other ear. In the 2nd toy, when the needle is put in the ear the needle comes out of the mouth. And in the 3rd toy, when the needle was put in, the needle did not come out.

The first toy represents people around you who give an impression that they are listening to you and care for you; but they just pretend to do so. After listening, as the needle comes out from the next ear, the things you said to them by counting on them are gone. So be careful while you are speaking to these types of people around you, who do not care for you. The second toy represents those people who listen to you and give the impression that they care for you. But as in the toy, the needle comes out from the mouth. These people will use your things and the words you tell them against you by telling it to others and bringing out the confidential issues for their own purpose. Third toy, the needle does not come out from it. These kinds of people will keep the trust you have in them. They are the ones who you can count on. Moral: Always stay in a company of a people who are loyal and trustworthy. People, who listen to what you tell them, are not always the ones you can count on when you need them the most.
