ebruary has come and is about to depart without the blowing snow or bitter cold associated with living in colder climate countries, and yet I am still feeling those winter blues. What is wrong with this picture? I should be happy; after all I despise the scorching heat that is lurking just around the corner and have seen enough snow back in Canada to last me a lifetime. So why do we still have the BLAAHHS at this time of year. Or maybe it’s just me and you’re thinking, what is this guy rambling on about?

If you are feeling a bit like I am, then let’s talk about a possible remedy for the Blaahhs. The first thing to remember is simply, that it will end! And the best thing to battle the blues with is passion. As time races by, most of us, busy with the day in and out grind of life tend to lose ‘passion’, and losing passion results in the Blaahhs! Sure, we all have to go out and make a living and if you are not among the fortunate few whose work is an exercise of their passion, then it is vital to make time, aside from work, to practice something you are passionate about. Whether it is exercise, sports, music, or anything at all that gets you going and excited about life, you need to seize the opportunity to get passion back into your routine. As stressful as my business can be, I am very fortunate to be passionate about what I do and when I’m not busy with The Source – like that ever happens – I get passionate about my music. As a matter of fact I have a very good friend and acoustic rock guitar phenomenon coming to visit me in the near future and you can be sure to catch us rockin’ Al Ain (I’ll fill you in on the details when that happens). Before I continue with any more cheap self promotion, let me reiterate how important it is for all of us to have passion in our lives and to stop at nothing to find our passionate niche. And while on the topic of passion, let me get passionate about telling you that we have ground out another great issue and would like to welcome Doctor Gabe, who will be on call at The Source to answer your many health related questions. ‘Ask The Doctor’ is now on our inbox page and we look forward to publishing your questions and answers. As per usual, we have plenty of great giveaways, so be sure to grab a magazine and check out our facebook page to discover more about winning at The Source.

WOMAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER PORCUPINE ATTACK

A Brazilian woman was hospitalized this week after a spiky porcupine fell from the sky and landed on her head. Housewife Sandra Nabucco was left in agony after the clumsy rodent embedded more than 200 of its sharp quills in her scalp.

RESUABLE MUG

Invest in the perfect reusable mug and kick the Styrofoam disposable cup habit. Polystyrene isn’t biodegradable, and after just one use most cups will end up lingering in a landfill for centuries. Make sure the mug you buy is sturdy with a tight lid to avoid spilling your drink especially while driving.

y k c a W d l r o W

The porcupine apparently dropped from a telephone wire while the 52-year-old walked her dog in Gávea, an affluent neighbourhood south of Rio de Janeiro. ‘It was a huge shock. I felt a thud on my head and then felt spines with my hands. The pain was enormous,’ she told Brazlian TV network Globo. Rest assured she’s most likely to wear a hard helmet while walking her dog in the future.

Rotana opens its second 5-star hotel in Al Ain

Teachers Collaborate for better education. The second Teachers’ Idea Forum takes place in Al Ain on February 25. Ten teachers from schools across Al Ain will each take ten minutes to share their favourite teaching idea that has worked in their UAE classroom. Presenters are a mix from public and private schools that follow various curriculums like American, British, Indian and MOE. ‘The idea for the Forum came out of listening to various friends talking about how tiring teaching can be, and how western practices of teaching don’t always transition well into the UAE classroom. So I figured if teachers got together to start sharing practical classroom teaching ideas that really work, then it could only make life easier for everyone!’ said Fiona, the event manager.

Rotana, has opened its second 5-star hotel in Al Ain. The new 254-room Hili Rayhaan by Rotana has been specially developed to complement the ambience of the UAE’s picturesque Garden City. Located in the Hili District, which is a suburb in the north of Al Ain, Hili Rayhaan by Rotana can be easily accessed from Al Ain International Airport, Dubai and from Abu Dhabi. “Al Ain has grown rapidly in stature as a tourist and business destination, with the result that there is a burgeoning need for upscale accommodation in the city,” said

Greg Allan, Rotana’s Area Vice President for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. “The extensive market research we conducted over the past couple of years showed that there is a strong demand for a 5-star facility that is alcohol-free, so we have incorporated this as an integral aspect of our new offering,” he added. The Opening took place at 11.59 pm on February 14 and a press conferences was held on the premises the following day which discussed the relation of The Rayhaan with Al Ain Rotana and Wahat Hili Mall.

Speke’s Gazelle successfully Breed Al Ain Zoo has successfully bred the Speke’s gazelle, following the introduction of two male Gazelles from Wadi Al Safa Wildlife Centre in Dubai. The Speke’s gazelle is classified as an endangered species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, issued in September 2008. Al Ain Zoo’s Speke’s gazelle herd appeared to be derived from a founder group with no new genetic contribution from new founders; therefore the zoo looked to introduce the new blood line in 2013. TEEN

SMOKING:

10 ways to keep teens smoke-free Teen smoking might begin innocently, but it can become a long-term problem. In fact, most adult smokers begin smoking as teenagers. Your best bet? Help your teen avoid taking that first puff. Follow these tips to help prevent teen smoking. By Mayo Clinic Staff 1. SET A GOOD EXAMPLE Teen smoking is more common among teens whose parents smoke. If you don't smoke, keep it up. If you do smoke, quit — now! The earlier you stop smoking, the less likely your teen is to become a smoker. Teach by example and ask your doctor about ways to stop smoking. 2. UNDERSTAND THE ATTRACTION Teen smoking can be a form of rebellion or a way to fit in with a particular group of friends. Some teens begin smoking to control their weight. Others smoke to feel cool or independent. Ask your teen how he or she feels about smoking and if any of your teen's friends smoke. Applaud your teen's good choices, and talk about the consequences of bad choices.

convincing, but you can give your teen the tools he or she needs to refuse cigarettes. Rehearse how to handle tough social situations. It might be as simple as saying, "No thanks, I don't smoke." 7. TAKE ADDICTION SERIOUSLY Most teens believe occasional smoking won't cause them to become addicted and that, if they become regular smokers, they can stop smoking anytime they want. Remind your teen that most adult smokers start as teens. Once you're hooked, it's tough to quit. 8. PREDICT THE FUTURE Teens tend to assume that bad things happen only to other people. Most teens think cancer, heart attacks and strokes occur only in the abstract. Use loved ones, friends, neighbors or celebrities who've been ill as real-life examples.

3. SAY NO TO TEEN SMOKING

9. THINK BEYOND CIGARETTES

You might feel as if your teen doesn't hear a word you say, but say it anyway. Tell your teen that smoking isn't allowed. Teens whose parents set the firmest smoking restrictions tend to smoke less than those without smoking limits.

Smokeless tobacco, clove cigarettes (kreteks), candy-flavored cigarettes (bidis) and hookahs are sometimes mistaken as less harmful or addictive than traditional cigarettes. Nothing could be further from the truth. All carry health risks. Don't let your teen be fooled.

4. APPEAL TO YOUR TEEN'S VANITY Smoking isn't glamorous. Remind your teen that smoking is dirty, smelly, causes bad breath and wrinkles, and yellows your teeth. Smoking can leave you with a chronic cough and less energy for sports and other enjoyable activities. 5. DO THE MATH Smoking is expensive. Help your teen calculate the weekly, monthly or yearly cost of smoking a pack a day, And then discuss what that extra money could buy! 6. EXPECT PEER PRESSURE

10. GET INVOLVED Take an active stance against teen smoking by getting involved in local and schoolsponsored smoking prevention campaigns. If your teen has already started smoking, avoid threats and ultimatums. Instead, find out why your teen is smoking — and discuss ways to help your teen quit. Avoiding or stopping smoking is one of the best things your teen can do for a lifetime of good health.

urban woman

The urban woman's identity struggle

A

By Komal R Lakhani

s women we are many things. We come into this world as daughters, sisters, nieces and even granddaughters. As we grow up our roles as students, girlfriends, wives, daughters, aunts, mothers, mother – in – laws and then as grandmothers are constantly defining us. In the midst of this we are also good employees and friends. I’m tired of writing this list and I am pretty sure you don’t want to read it either, so let’s cut to the real deal. We women get so caught up in our daily life roles that we forget who we really are. Every woman is a person first, then a woman, and then everything else; yet we define ourselves according to the roles we play rather than who we really are. When I was a teen I saw a lady being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. She had written a book about how much she loved her kids, but shockingly admitted that she loved her husband more. To most mothers that would sound insane, but to me it made sense in a warped sort of way. Many mothers secretly admit that sometimes they just despise their kids. This doesn’t make them terrible mothers, it makes them people who are so caught up in being mothers that they have no ‘me time,’ and as such, a lack of identity. Me time isn’t just time to soak in a soothing bath or read a book, ‘me time’ can be whatever it is you want it to be! Countless couples these days seem all too happy at parties and social gatherings, but when it’s just us girls, the reality of cohabitation reveals its true colours! I’m always told how lucky I am to be single followed by a firm “don’t get married too soon.”

Well ladies, it’s not luck, it is smart sense; I choose to be me first and then everything else. Keeping track of your own identity does not imply becoming selfish and letting go of your responsibilities. Responsibilities keep us grounded as a society, but to a woman who is aware of her identity; balancing life is not back–breaking. After you send off your kids and husband in the morning, you can to be ‘you’ instead of continuing the mother role. Even at work you need to be you, and not just an executive or manger. You and all of your titles are tightly knit, but even between the most tightly knit scarves, there is room for air. So that is what you need to do; don’t just search for those tiny air pockets, make them yourself! Now is the time for reflection; “what is my identity?” What am I when all the ‘roles’ of my life are kept aside? No, corporate slave is not your identity either, so put that aside and think. What do you like to do? Who are you? When I think this to myself, I say I’m Komal R. Lakhani and there, I just lost my identity by adding my last name and engaging my daughter role! “Think again Komal,” I say to myself as I type the correct answer. I am Komal, I love to bake, I love adventure, roller coasters, shoes, I love to write and more than anything else, I love myself! Now it’s your turn; go ahead, you will be amazed to rediscover that other real you that needs attention! Being traditional is not wrong, but you should make an attempt to step out of your comfort zone to discover yourself and your true potential. At the end of the day, you can be anything you want to be and mold yourself into any role or title you desire. But be sure not to lose yourself in the many social titles and designations of today’s urban woman, and you will never lose your true identity.

GYROMANIA

I

like adventure as much as the next guy. However, I’m not one to climb barefoot up the side of a mountain in the snow or scuba dive with hungry sharks. I’d rather try something that keeps my life insurance policy locked in the safe. Adventure brings us back to that feeling we had as kids. Remember jumping your bike over that poorly constructed ramp? We stretched out and tumbled down steep hills. We climbed just to grasp the highest limb of the tree. A new adventure reminds us that we are getting older but we still crave that reckless abandonment we had in our youth.

A few weeks ago I was invited to hang out at Skydive Dubai. We parked and stepped out of the van. Immediately our attention was drawn to the clouds where ten or more people were falling out of the sky. Excitement swelled up in me with this image of colorful canopies blooming behind each person. Skydiving is definitely on my bucket list, but that day I was there for a different adventure. A few of us from The Source Magazine were introduced to an adrenalin toy we could fly. Skydive Dubai has a few thrills beyond the normal skydiving. One of the adventures we were asked to give a whirl was the gyrocopter. For those of you searching for a rush or something cheaper than skydiving, I recommend giving this a shot. I had never been near a gyrocopter. It looked like a toy helicopter you could fly with a remote control. One copter had an open air cockpit and the other had a hard shell closed canopy. They required a bit of runway to take off but they acted much like a helicopter with less speed and more mobility due to its tilting blades.

16

The Source

Not only was I going up, I was taking pictures at the same time. I chose the copter with the open canopy so I could feel the action as we hovered, zipped, dipped, and whipped past the second gyrocopter maneuvering with us. I felt enough action in that gyrocopter to make me heave, ho, and hurl my breakfast after we landed. Next time, I’ll eat a bigger breakfast and do it all over again. Guys, this was an unexpected adventure and I was grateful for Skydive Dubai and the opportunity to venture beyond the staple excitement they offer. Dubai has many icons to observe, but I encourage you to head over to any one of the Skydive Dubai facilities and check out their offerings. While you are there, kick that bucket list 3800 meters in the air and do some skydiving. Who knows, you might catch me there eating breakfast before take-off!

s we walked along the green pathway, the sound of flowing water transported me into the mountains, where the stream gushes through not letting even the mountain hinder its eventual meeting with the river. Slowly the sounds of water become louder and bursting through the aqua-foam is a kayaker, paddling his kayak with swift, neat and efficient strokes. He rushes by us and disappears downstream before we could snap a photo. Only a professional could do that, and guess what; he was not just a professional, but a world champion. This week, the Source team checked out Wadi Adventure, located at the base of Jabel Hafeet, which houses the longest man made white-water channel in the world; measured at 488 meters. Known as the Black Channel, it has now become a magnet for Olympic kayakers from all over the world. The black channel is powered by three fully submerged and vertical lift pumps, with one in reserve at all times. “The channel endured rigorous testing before earning it’s notorious reputation as a friendly, yet challenging, low risk, adaptive and solid training venue”, says Fergus Coffey, the white-water manager at Wadi who helped design the black channel. There are roughly 130 athletes with more than 30 nationalities currently training at Wadi Adventure. It is an ideal platform for testing their endurance and practicing and developing new techniques every day. We got a chance to catch up with a few of them between training. First up was Vávra Hradilek, silver Olympic Medallist from the Czech Republic, who landed in the UAE just two days before we met

Vávra shared his views with another world champion David Florence of Great Britian on the facility at Wadi Adventure. They were happy to train here since most of Europe is covered in snow at this time of year, and they can make the most of the increased water time without the jet lag associated with travelling all the way to Australia, which pre-Wadi, housed the largest white-water channel. David, who is the current world champion in C1 and C2 forms of kayaking, is on his fifth visit here and likes the variety this channel offers. When questioned about the challenges kayakers faced, he said, “The biggest challenge is dealing with your mistakes; mistakes can happen during a championship not just in training. We need to get back up and finish what we started, accept what happened and improve on it.” After seeing all the action for myself and talking to the champions of the sport, I decided to go kayaking myself, and booked in for an adrenaline packed hands on experience next week. If you are the outdoorsy, adventurous type and would like to try kayaking, Wadi has a green and blue channel for beginners, with instructors on hand to give lessons or, if you are already a pro at the sport, you can always take to the Black Channel. Adding fiber to your diet

D

ietary fiber is material from plant sources that cannot be digested by humans. There are two types of fiber; watersoluble and water insoluble. Each type has its own characteristics that make it special.

Water soluble fibers absorb water during digestion. This fiber increases the bulk of stools and has been linked to lowering blood cholesterol. Sources of soluble fiber can be found in legumes such as dry beans, lentils, peas and in fruits such as oranges, grapefruit and apples. Grains such as barley, oats and oat bran are also sources of such fiber. Water insoluble fibers on the other hand, don’t change during digestion. This type of fiber is found in fruits that have peel or seeds that can be eaten and whole grain products such as whole-wheat bread, pasta and crackers, bulgur wheat, cereals, bran, brown rice and rolled oats. There are many benefits of adding more fiber to your diet like reducing the risk of developing various conditions such as heart disease, colon cancer and diabetes. Fiber is healthy and increasing your fiber intake can also aid in weight loss, because meals containing more fiber are digested slower and make you feel full longer How much fiber should we have daily? The American Heart Association suggests consuming at least 25 to 30grams a day from food, not supplements. Most of us do not even achieve half of this daily target. Here are some easy ways to increase fiber:

GRAINS AND CEREALS – • Try to include at least one serving of whole grain in every meal. • Use wheat germ and oat bran to sprinkle over salad, soup and yoghurt • Use whole-wheat flour in your cooking and baking • Choose whole grain, not white, bread. Study labels to see which bread has more fiber • Choose cereals that have more fiber, preferably with at least 20

The Source

• • • •

5grams of fiber in every serving. Whole-wheat crackers are good snacks and can be combined with healthy toppings such as hummus. Another high fiber snack is popcorn. Choose brown rice instead of white. If you don’t like the taste, try using at least half of the rice you cook as brown and the other half white. Alternatively, add barley to your white rice for more fiber content. You'll barely taste the barley, especially if you season the rice. Legumes and Beans Use beans such as kidney beans and garbanzos to add variety to your salads. Just half a cup of these beans provides up to 8grams of fiber. Use legumes instead of meat in soups and tomato sauces Explore dishes that use whole grains and legumes as part of the main meal. Many cultures eat these daily and benefit from more fiber

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES – • •

• • • • •

Aim for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Fresher is better. Try to eat fruits that can be eaten with their peel. Leave the skin on apples and potatoes. If you are eating mashed potatoes try to leave the skin in the dish and even while cooking the peel allows more nutrients to seep into the potatoes. Vegetables that are fiber rich include peas, cauliflower, carrots, sweet potato and squash. Always have whole fruits instead of juices. Fruits rich in fiber include apples, oranges and berries. Add dry fruits to your baking; cookies, breads, cakes and so on. These dried fruits are actually more fiber rich but watch out for the higher calorie content. Add fruits to your cereal; sliced bananas, berries and so on. Grate carrots onto salads

As with all dietary changes, consult your doctor or nutritionist if you are under any dietary restrictions. Also make sure to drink more water because fiber pulls water into the intestines. Without adequate hydration, fiber can actually aggravate rather than alleviate constipation. So try to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. With a little creativity, some pre-planning, and a few new additions to your grocery list, you'll be well on your way to meeting your daily fiber requirements with wholesome, delicious foods. Just be sure not to overwhelm yourself with too many changes at once. Pick one or two ideas to try each week and stick with those that work best for you and your family.

Campaigning for a Cause By Komal R Lakhani

J 22

The Source

alal Jamal BinThaneya is a young Emirati who has chosen the path of exercise to shed light on the problems faced by special needs children in UAE. The 27 year old has a degree in Human resources & business and works for Dubai Ports World, when he is not cycling across the Gulf. Jalal recently completed a 5000 km cycle challenge across the gulf. We caught up with him on his return from South Korea a few days back.

with special needs and the awareness needed to put an end to the shame associated with this issue, especially among affected families. Having a disability is not anyone’s fault, so why hide it. We need to get everyone talking about it. No one in my family or no one I know personally has special needs, so there is no personal agenda behind my efforts.

What got you started on this cause of campaigning for special needs children?

I always wanted someone to take an interest in this cause and kept waiting but no one stepped up. At one point I got tired of waiting and decided to become that person myself. If the UAE is going to be a developed nation, its people need to be developed. I have been campaigning since 2007 and haven’t stopped. If one part of society develops, the other needs to be developed as well; otherwise there is an imbalance. I do what I do to garner the attention of the citizens and residents of this country and direct them towards the needs of the children.

I have always noticed that there is a gap in society when it comes to people

You have already taken on a 600km ‘the walk’ to raise awareness about autism, which gathered a considerable

al majlis been getting along with the increased awareness, and I want to keep running with it. The cycling feat across the Gulf was no doubt difficult, but it once again proved to be a fruitful venture and generated more help for the children. What are your plans for the future? Being first in doing things motivates me. I was the first to walk across to Saudi Arabia and to cycle the Gulf; others have tried but did not succeed. I want to keep challenging myself with more physical endeavors and keep going as long as I can. I choose a different foundation every time, so that I can bring attention to each one of them and rally support for all the good work they are doing. You started very young, what advice would you give to young Emiratis like yourself?

amount of attention for your cause. When and why did you make the transition from walking to cycling?

Don't wait to become a victim. Don't wait for anything. Whether it’s studying, exercise, giving good advice or something worth doing, just seize the moment and do it! Have faith regardless of your religion and beliefs. Never give up! Don’t lose face; Do what you say and say what you do! Getting support can be difficult, like it was for me when I started my brand of campaigning, but a little difficulty should never compromise your passion; keep at it!

The Walk was the first of its kind attempted in the Gulf. The center for the deaf and blind in Qatar were following me on twitter and they also received me in person during my walk. I have undertaken three ‘walks’ already and after a certain time people stop paying attention. I shifted from walking to cycling because I needed to do something new to retain the attention that was already there and generate more for the cause. Cycling picked up in the region because of the Dubai tour and since I loved cycling already I decided to give it a try. How has your experience been with cycling for increasing awareness? On my cycling tour many people and organizations followed me on twitter to understand the hardships associated with my journey, like cycling in the dark, in difficult and extreme weather conditions and sometimes even without food. This shows the support I have

The infamous Kandura Decoding the dress code

K

By K.Radhakishan

andura Everybody knows what a ‘Kandura’ is; it’s the long white outfit that male Emiratis as well as expat Arabs wear, but many expats of non-Arab lineage mistake the Kandura for an ‘Islamic’ dress, failing to understand that it is not religious, rather the UAE’s national dress for men.

One of the fascinating facts about the Kandura is that it remains crease free throughout the day and always looks spic-and-span. Traditionally the Kandura is white in colour, though different hues of grey and brown have become common. The darker Kanduras are made from thicker material and are usually worn during the winter months. The white Kandura stays undefeated, especially during hot Arabian summers when the light cotton fabric makes the most sense. As for the miraculous ability these garments have in retaining their pristine ironed look, we should understand that for many men, the Kandura is swapped on occasion during the day with another one better suited for specific activities. They have their work, party and dinner Kanduras, just like other cultures have different outfits for various occasions. Typical Kanduras are made of cotton and can be bought ready made in a store or custom tailored to size. Tailored Kanduras can cost anywhere from AED 40, for the simplest ones, to AED 1000 for fancy ones. Kanduras can also be customized with embroidery, collars and cuffs to add an element of fun or style. Some Kanduras have a Kerkusha, which is a string of fabric that hangs like a tie and is in line with the preferred choice in The Emirates. An addition to the Kandura is the ‘Bisht.’ It is a kind of jacket that is worn over the kandura for official events, meetings and weddings.

24

The Source

The Bisht can be seen worn by various members of the royal families and councilmen when they meet and greet each other for official and celebratory functions. The Bisht is available in colours like black, brown, beige and grey with a golden border running down the neckline. The Kandura is paired with the ‘Guthra’ which is the headscarf that men wear. Made from square cotton cloth in white or checkered patterns, it is draped over the head in various styles. In dry climates, these scarves provide protection from blowing dust and harsh solar rays. The Guthra is combined with an ‘Agal’; a black hair band-like ring used to keep the Guthra in place. Today’s generation of younger men have adopted their own styles of tying the Guthra, and eliminated the Agal altogether. Faneela, similar to a vest and Woozar, a piece of cloth tied around the waist are the garments worn underneath the Kandura. Last but not least, the Kandura is paired with sandals called Na-aal, which are available in various colours and designs to complete the look. Now that you know all about the dress code followed by men in the UAE, go ahead and try one on. Most Emirati men do not mind expats wearing the national dress and are happy to see people participating in their culture and heritage.

“WE ARE FAMILY”

W

By JJ Green

ay back in 1990 in Alberta, Canada, there began a celebration in February called Family day. It quickly spread to other Provinces in the nation and has now been adopted on a global scale, as a time to observe the importance of family! As a Canadian living in the UAE, I welcome an opportunity to help create a day or even an entire month dedicated to something that should be shared globally and completely aligns with fundamental Islamic values and the culture of the UAE. Quality family time is an absolute necessity and the more you spend the greater the chances of building a better emotional bond between you and your spouse and your children. I believe it is safe to say that every parent should be striving to raise happy and well adjusted kids. In many parts of the world the family has been under attack for years with broken marriages, undue stress, depression and obesity being just a few of the byproducts. Children suffer most in broken families, and to do our part in preventing the suffering, we need to get back to the essence of true family values. In my opinion, to build a healthy family environment, we should start at the foundation; the parents. Mom and Dad, your kids depend on you, and successful life lessons are taught by example. My wife and I are incredibly busy trying to keep life together and I think most of us can identify with this situation. Because of the stressful and hectic lifestyles many couples deal with, it is important to learn to set aside time for themselves as well as the kids. Try to give yourselves at minimum, one date night per month, but ideally, you should try for an evening every week. The stronger your emotional bond is with your spouse, the greater the chances of having children that build a

26

The Source

similar bond with their partners later on down the road. Once you have mastered bonding as a couple you can focus positive energy on parenting and setting aside a healthy amount of interactive quality time with your children. The results of multiple studies site inadequate or poor parenting as a direct link to behavioural and emotional disorders in children. Spending quality time with your family is a vital step to successful parenting and raising well balanced people. Spending time with your family doesn’t need to be expensive or difficult to access; the key is to pay attention to your kids and validate them; make them know they matter! Here are some activities that will promote a happy and emotionally well balanced family: 1. Family meal time; this is an excellent opportunity to encourage open conversation and listening skills. 2. Homework; show an interest your child’s studies and help them when you can. 3. Sports; engage in sports whenever possible! 4. Share and support hobbies. 5. Play board games together and enjoy each other’s company. 6. Religious activities 7. Go shopping together. 8. Attend concerts or shows together. 9. Enjoy outdoor activities together. 10. If you have younger children, read to, and with them often. We live in an unprecedented age of divorce and general family deterioration, often due to circumstances we can prevent through actions that promote healthy and happy family living. I am blessed with a wonderful family and believe it is well worthwhile making the effort and going the extra mile to preserve a fundamental human need; Family! F e b r u a r y already has Va l e n t i n e ’ s day but let’s raise the bar on love and observe the month of February as “Family Month.”

Mankind’s most versatile invention By Komal R Lakhani

This week we took a journey down discovery lane at the textile markets of Al Ain. What is now the textile market in town center used to be the immigration office and was commonly referred to as ‘jawazat’ (passport) in Arabic. The biggest store in the area at that time was owned by an expat Omani, giving the place its name, 'Mazhjn Omani.’ When The Immigration office moved to Al Jimi, it left behind the infamous name Jawazat. Soon after that the immigration office was converted into residential and commercial buildings with stores on the lower floors and houses above. Somewhere in the early 90's the street saw a boom in retail textile stores. Today Jawazat Kadeem, which means Old Jawazat, houses over 30 stores catering to the needs of thousands. Al Kawkab (Star Textiles) and Al Thabbiya Textiles (Golden Textiles) are amongst the oldest shops here. By coincidence, I discovered that Star Textiles celebrates its 20th anniversary this very month. Mr. Pradeep Kumar of Al Thahbiya Textiles explained how complex and versatile the textile market is. They have customers coming in from all over the UAE and Oman for their raw material needs. This makes the range of demand very high and in turn leads to a need for fast paced supply. On some days their cargo arrives in the morning and is completely sold out by the afternoon. The stores here sell almost every kind of raw material one can think of; cotton, silk, satin, chiffon, crape, georgette and more. There are more colours to choose from than one can imagine. According to Pradeep, one of the most commonly sold items is the printed cloth, which has various custom made designs and colours, along with salwars. What I loved was the ‘shela’ which you may know as scarves. Available in a range of hues, they are used as head scarfs by the Muslim women but can also be worn as a scarf or wrap to add some extra glam to an everyday outfit. The material in these markets comes from all over the globe, giving us the option of picking from the very best. Though this is predominately a market for women, some stores sell men’s items close to Eid. Next time you're down town, why not check out Jawazat near KM Trading. Now that you are in the know about where to get your textiles, you can take a break from the malls and join the bustling town center buzz. Stay tuned for the next issue to read yet another interesting review of our very own city, Al Ain!

STILL ROCKIN’& ROLLIN’

The Rolling Stones 1962…….?

I

was just a baby when ‘bad boy’ British rockers, The Rolling Stones first began their raw energy rockin’ careers. Five decades and more than 200 million records world-wide later, these iconic performers show no signs of stopping as they gear up to rock Abu Dhabi! I remember years ago, telling myself to go check out the stones as there can’t be a lot of opportunity left. That was back in the nineties and now I’m an old man! I get stamina but these guys are off the scale!

The 14 On Fire Tour will see Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood hit the road yet again after the 2013 US and UK run of shows. Mick Taylor, who was a member of the Rolling Stones from 1969-1974, will be a special guest for this tour. The most exciting part is that they are kicking things off with us in Abu Dhabi!

The stage design for the outdoor concerts is based on the band’s ubiquitous tongue and lips logo, which extends out into the audience. The exclusive ‘Tongue Pit’ area inside the stage will give fans in this area an incomparable 360 degree concert experience. Known for their ground-breaking sets and use of cutting-edge technology, the Stones’ set design will feature video screens and special effects that will enhance the high-octane experience of attending a live Stones’ show. Get ready for high energy sets rammed with classics such as “Gimme Shelter, “Paint It Black”, “Jumping Jack Flash”, “Tumbling Dice” and “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll”, and some unexpected cover versions. The Rolling Stones were recently crowned the ‘Best Live Band” at the NME Awards in London, and over the past 12 months have thrilled fans with the release of a groundbreaking new documentary, ‘Crossfire Hurricane’, a greatest hits collection, ‘GRRR!’, a massive US tour and a ground-breaking, back to back, sold out set of two historic Hyde Park concerts in the UK in front of 120,000, which are chronicled in a new concert film ‘Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live’.

If you are one of the fortunate ones with tickets for this milestone event on Friday Feb. 21st, then as Keith Richards says, “Get ready to rock out” and turn on the steam as The Stones prance back to where they belong; up on stage!

Dinosaur Country

In the second part of our mini series on the Wild West of America, our guest writer experiences the splendour of the Rocky Mountains, finds dinosaur fossils and travels through ghost towns By Alexandra Patten

T

he Wild Wild West treats visitors to a totally different side of America. While spending time in the spectacular landscapes of the Rockies, you can hike up to waterfalls and soak in natural hot springs; take cable cars to the tops of mountains; and even ride down an alpine slide (a slide on which you sit on a tray and career down a mountain in a chute).

You can experience the canyon country of northwestern Colorado and Utah, touch real dinosaur fossils, luxuriate in expensive Aspen and drive over high mountain passes to see ghost towns and ice grottoes. Steamboat Springs, where we spent our first week in a ski apartment, is a charming little ski town, squarely geared towards the outdoors; rafting, tubing and biking are among the popular activities and the Main Street is strewn with people carrying inflatable rubber rings and wearing wet clothing. It's so named for its hot springs and you can experience them in two entirely different ways. The Old Town Hot Springs has basically been made into a series of swimming pools, hot tubs and a mini water park with two long flume slides and a rock climbing wall. The children loved this, but I was more taken with Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Outside of the town nestled in a hidden valley down a steep dirt road, this is a more natural environment where you swim in muddy pools. The spring meets a stream, mixing hot and cold water to create areas of wildly varying temperature. There were chipmunks everywhere, and the setting, amongst trees and 32

Steamboat Rock and Balanced Rock

my world Steamboat Rock at the confluence of the Yampa and Green Rivers at Dinosaur National Monument

Dinosaur track preserved in rock

the mountain, was stunning. After sunset, no children are admitted and clothing is optional. Although the kids declared the water too murky, I loved these pools and could have spent all day there. We did some hiking, although our youngest son seemed to suffer a little from the altitude and had several moments of simply refusing to carry on. My husband therefore went off and hiked by himself a couple of times, including an early morning walk up the mountain on which he saw a black bear. After Steamboat, we moved on to Dinosaur National Monument, on the Colorado/Utah border. The landscape is straight out of

a western, and so were some of the towns we passed through. In particular, we enjoyed the small but fascinating Museum of Northwest Colorado at Craig, where the boys loved seeing real cowboy clothes and a gun collection belonging to an elderly man who worked there (and regaled us with tales of how he carried a gun when he visited New York). The Colorado side of the park is stunning and amazingly empty. We soon realised the reason for this – we were in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town where you could stay the night or even get a meal is 40 miles away in Vernal, Utah. Dinosaur, on the Colorado side, was a real one-horse town where rusty dinosaur statues stood next to closed-down motels and shacks, a relic of an era when tourism was busier there. On the Utah side, you can see dinosaur fossils embedded in rock at the Quarry where many of the dinosaur bones found in museums around the world were discovered. For our sons, this was a real highlight. We finished our Colorado stretch with two nights in Aspen. I'd expected it to be jetset and posh, and it is, but in a charming, boutique type way. The little tree-lined streets, with fantastic restaurants and bars, low-rise wooden architecture and, of course, the amazing mountain setting make it a uniquely special place. String quartets played in the streets, while beautiful couples in designer dresses made their way to the Opera House. Our hotel, The Limelight, was one of the nicest I've ever stayed at. From the homemade granola at breakfast, to the comfy beds and the pizza restaurant where you could roast marshmallows round a firepit, it was perfect for a family and not too jaw-droppingly expensive either.

When the steaks are cooked till the desired doneness remove from the grill and let rest for 2 – minutes, this will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat. 5. To serve place a spoon of the garlic butter on top and let it melt slightly. 6. These steaks can be served with your favorite potato, rice or vegetable dish.

GRILLING TIP Let your steak or any meat “temper” for a few minutes at room temperature once removed from the chiller. This will allow for a more even cooking of the meat. Meat that is removed immediately from the chiller and grilled may cook quickly on the outside but because of the cold center will not cook evenly on the inside.

BE GOOD TO ALL

even your enemies There was a boy named Ahmed who was very good in his studies and kind and obedient to his parents. Everyone loved him, but that aroused jealousy in Dawood who studied in Ahmed’s class. Dawood was not good at studies and liked to play during school hours. He misbehaved with his parents, bullied his classmates including Ahmed and was always mean to him.

On his eighth birthday, Ahmed got a nice pen as a gift from his parents. He brought it to school to use. When Dawood saw it, he was very jealous of Ahmed. He asked Ahmed, "Hey, where did you get that? Did you buy it?" "My parents gave it to me for my birthday." replied Ahmed. Dawood was overwhelmed with anger and jealousy. The bad boy that he was, he rarely got any presents from his parents. He decided to steal Ahmed's pen. During recess, when everyone was out he took the pen and hid it inside his bag. When Ahmed came back and could not find his pen, he informed his class teacher about it. The teacher ordered the class monitor to search everyone’s bag. The missing pen was soon found in Dawood's bag and the furious teacher asked the errant boy, " Dawood, what do you have to say about it?" Dawood was in tears. He had nothing to say. When Ahmed saw Dawood cry, he took pity on the boy and requested his class teacher not to take any action against Dawood. This opened Dawood 's eyes. He could now see what a good boy Ahmed was. He asked for forgiveness from his teacher and Ahmed. From that day on, he became friends with Ahmed and gradually changed himself to be as good as Ahmed. Moral: Do not harm someone even if they harm you. Be good to all.
