hat if we took a man and gave him the ability to endure increased pain thresholds, made him more sensitive and compassionate, gave him incredible inner strength with which to endure endless amounts of suffering and discrimination and gave him the ability to nurture, become selfless and love unconditionally. And what if we took that man and increased his level of patience, pride, honour and humility, and then made him more vulnerable yet stronger than ever before, and last but certainly not least, created him in the shape of infinite and ageless beauty; what would we have?
We would have created the greatest gift any man could ever hope to be given; a woman! Women are the ultimate gift to men from God and as such, were put on earth to be protected, honoured, respected and above all loved! March 8th marks International Women’s Day and is a day for women to celebrate their femininity and remind the world of their power and potential. It is also a day designed to remind men to hold their ultimate gifts in the highest regard not only on March 8th, but every day of the year in appreciation of a gift that they quite often do not deserve and could most certainly not survive without! International Women’s Day is also and most important of all, a day to create awareness for, and remind the world of the social and political issues that have and continue to affect women on a global scale. I have been blessed with Kaarin (my Sweet Pea) and I am certain that heaven is and has been missing an angel for more than 20 years now, because this angel has been by my side watching over me and nurturing our family with the kind of unconditional love that only a woman can bring to your heart and home!
CONTRIBUTORS Dr. Nadia Hussain, Dr. Talal Mohammed Al Darwich, Jeff Skinner, Marianne Makdisi, K.Radhskishan
On March 8th and every other day for that matter, take the time to pay tribute to the mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, aunts nieces, wives and girlfriends that brighten up our world.

HIGHWAY TURNED TO DESERT
A storm in south Devon left a trail of destruction as freak waves sent sand and rocks crashing inland. The A379 Slapton Road in Torcross which is one of five local routes had to be closed for days.
ADOPT
Four people had to be rescued from their cars, while the coastguard, police and fire service were called after storm-spotters put their lives in danger at a car park. Coastguard crews themselves became stuck as they tried to rescue residents, after which a major clean-up operation was under taken. Damage along the railway line at Dawlish forced engineers to craft a make-shift seawall out of containers. Three days later residents were able to return home after being evacuated twice in 10 days.

Al Ain Rotana’s fourth Walkathon for a cause
Al Ain Rotana, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Theyab Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, in collaboration with the UAE Red Crescent, will be hosting the third Walkathon for Children with Cancer on the 14th of March 2014. Mr. Ayman Gharib, the General Manager of Al Ain Rotana said, “We started sponsoring such charitable activities a couple of years ago, for we believe that as an established organization in the Emirates, we have a responsibility to help the community.
We are not only a business but also have a social responsibility to serve the people of our community. The first walkathon held in 2011, raised over AED 70,000, the second one held in 2012 raised a remarkable AED 180,000 and the third one held in 2013 raised AED 118000. This year we are expecting many more participants as the walkathon has become an annual event for schools, businesses and other groups.
We know that the people of the UAE, locals and expatriates alike, care deeply about helping others, especially children who are courageously facing a huge battle.” Mr. Gharib added, “With the help of His Highness Sheikh Theyab Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan and the companies who support us in this worthwhile activity, as we have new major sponsors this year as TMKN, we hope to top the earlier walkathons’ tremendous achievements.
We invite everyone to support and participate on the 14th March2014 from 9:00am until 11:00am. Registration, at AED 10, has already started and will remain open until the day of the event. Every dirham raised will go to the UAE Red Crescent to support research on pediatric oncology.” The walkathon will be followed by a small gathering at the hotel where children can enjoy a variety of activities such as games and entertainment, face and sand painting.

African Acrobats come to Al Ain
A group of African Acrobats have come down to Al Ain to perform at Hili Fun City. Amusement park goers will be thrilled with the work of this talented group as they jump through tiny hoops, eat and breathe fire. We were on the edge of our city as the group made formations that the average man could not even imagine. Four shows are being held daily in two categories. The first is where the group performs creative and heart pounding stunts and the second where they interact with the audience and invite them to the stage to perform simple things like jumping a rope. They also speak different languages keeping the audience amazed. The acrobatic troop’s performance is completed by the African Bazar set up outside selling arts and handicrafts typical to Africa. The area surrounding the amphitheatre is designed to replicate Africa with little hay huts and drum beat music.

Exchange program at Al Ain zoo a Success! As a leader in arid wildlife conservation and as part of its commitment to improving genetic diversity, Al Ain Zoo has successfully conducted an animal exchange with Al Areen Wildlife Park in Bahrain. The initiative comprised the exchange of endangered species, including Dama gazelle, Arabian oryx, Scimitar-horned oryx, Arabian sand cat, Arabian wolves, African turtles, elands, wildebeest and ponies. The animals were exchanged over a period of four days following months of careful coordination, planning and monitoring by both organisations. Al Ain Zoo welcomed 17 animals from Al Areen Wildlife Park, and the Zoo in turn arranged for 34 animals to be transported to the Wildlife Park. All the animals involved in the exchange underwent a series of medical checks and were issued accredited certifications, including special certificates for animals listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The animals were then placed under quarantine for approximately one month to ensure their safety and rule out any medical problems, or diseases. After successfully completing
Awarness campaign about Down’s Syndrome A large number of residents, families, friends, caregivers, physicians and healthcare providers joined the 21 special needs children last weekend at Al Ain Zoo. The event, organised by the Down’s Syndrome Support Group at Tawam Hospital, was aimed at raising awareness about the condition and supporting those who have it. “Down’s syndrome is not a disease that needs to be cured, it’s simply a condition,” said Dr Jennifer Price Corder, consultant physician, general paediatrics, Tawam Hospital. In the past, people with Down’s syndrome were not given the opportunity to learn because people mistakenly thought that they were unable to, said Dr Corder. “Today, things are different. We know if we do not set our expectations too low they will surprise us with what they can do. We know this because these children have become musicians and artists and athletes and actors and many other things. They can volunteer, some have jobs too,” she added. According to Dr Mariam Al Musafiri, an Emirati doctor at Tawam Hospital and one of the organisers, the number of people being born with Down’s syndrome was on the rise in the UAE and a support group has been set up to help them and their families. 12

health checks, the animals will take their place in their new home. A female Arabian sand cat that has already passed its health checks will soon be introduced to the existing group at Al Ain Zoo, which houses the largest population of captive Arabian sand cats in the world. Commenting on the successful exchange, H.E. Ghanim Al Hajeri, Director General of the Zoo & Aquarium Public Institution in Al Ain, said: “Al Ain Zoo is home to internationally important conservation programmes, and has long been active in the field of wildlife preservation and conservation. In-breeding challenges arise
when groups of animals live together for long periods of time, and such challenges must be appropriately managed to conserve these species. Al Ain Zoo’s collaboration with Al Areen Wildlife Park falls directly in line with our commitment to protect critically endangered species, ensuring that the individuals we house are genetically compatible.” Al Ain Zoo’s efforts in wildlife conservation include captive management, conservation research, captive breeding, propagation, and the reintroduction of endangered species in to the wild whenever possible.
Abu Dhabi and Ajman Healthcare Workers Attend Addiction Treatment Workshops The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) held workshops for nursing and medical staff in Abu Dhabi and Ajman, particularly individuals who are in direct contact with addiction patients. These workshops are organized by the Institute of Training and Education at NRC and are part of the center’s knowledge building campaign to raise the standard of treatment for substance use patients across the UAE. These two workshops were held in collaboration with Fatima College of Health Sciences and the University of Aberdeen in the UAE, respectively, where joint efforts are being made to develop the academic level of nursing studies from its current level of a diploma to a Masters program. The training held at the University of Aberdeen drew the participation of NRC’s staff, the university’s nursing professors and medical researchers. Participants discussed various aspects of the disease of addiction, best treatment options available, reasons for substance abuse and the consequences of addiction on an individual’s health and on their families. The training in Ajman focused on methods for diagnosing and monitoring addiction and the importance of early detection in addition to training attendees on the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test
(ASSIST). Participants were also informed of the best methods for assessing whether patients needed be transferred from primary healthcare centres and hospitals to specialized addiction treatment facilities. Commenting on NRC’s ongoing training initiatives, H.E. Dr. Hamad Al Ghaferi, NRC’s Director General said “In order to ensure that we make true progress in fighting the disease of addiction, it is essential that all parties involved in this effort are aware of the latest techniques and methodologies available in the field. We are always open to approaching our peers, locally or internationally, in order to work together and to exchange experiences. So far, we have had positive feedback for all of our workshops, and we will continue to work on developing the skills of medical professionals to raise the standards of addiction treatment in the UAE through ongoing training programs.”

CHAT
Driving While Intoxicated or Driving While Intexticated; is there a difference?
I will openly admit that I have been guilty on numerous occasions of texting while driving and on the other hand condemn people who drive while under the influence of alcohol. It is a fact that since the introduction of harsher laws and frequent awareness campaigns, the number of drunk drivers on the road has been on a steady decline. Studies have shown that texting while driving is six times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. In fact, texting while driving causes over 3,000 deaths and 330,000 injuries per year, according to a Harvard Center for Risk Analysis study. It has now replaced drunk driving as the leading cause of deaths and accidents among teens. Here are some interesting statistics that will make you re-think that chat you may be partial to having while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle: 1. In the USA alone in 2011 23% of all crashes were linked to cell phone use (1.3 million accidents!) 2. The minimal amount of distraction time while texting is 5 seconds which at 55 mph is like driving the distance of a football field while blindfolded! 3. Texting makes a crash 23 times more likely compared to 2.8 times more risk for dialing, 1.3 times more risk for talking and listening and 1.4 times more risk when reaching for a device. 4. 13% of drivers aged 18 - 20 involved in a crash admitted that they were texting or talking on a phone at the time of the crash. 5. 82% of Americans aged 16 – 17 own cell phones, 52% say they have talked on a phone while driving and 32% say that they have texted while driving.
6. 77% of young adults are somewhat or very confident that they can safely text while driving and 55% claim that it is easy to text while driving. 7. Texting drivers spend approximately 10% of their driving time outside of their lane. 8. A message to adults; your actions are teaching teens extremely dangerous lessons! 48% of teens have seen their parents talking on their mobiles while driving, 15% have seen their parents texting, 27% of adults have either received or sent texts while driving and 48% of kids aged 12 - 17 have been in a vehicle driven by someone that was texting at the time. 9. 1 in 5 of all drivers confesses to surfing the web while driving. These stats were taken from the United States of America but make no mistake, similar or even worse figures exists here in the UAE and although strict laws are already in place when it comes to mobile phone use while driving, people seem to be very slow to adhere to them. As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I too have been very guilty of most of the practices discussed in this article but after having done the research and above all viewed some of the videos on line regarding the topic, I vow to leave the phone alone while driving and keep my eyes on the road! Responsible people do not drive while intoxicated; why on earth would you engage in a practice that is so much more likely to place you into an early grave!

International Women's Day
I
By Komal R Lakhani
nternational Women’s day (IWD) is around the corner, and the media is all over it. Lucky for us Women’s Day hasn’t been taken over by the corporates yet. The idea of Women’s Day has been around since the early 1900’s and was celebrated on the last Sunday of February. It was in 1913 that the decision to celebrate Women’s Day on March 8 was officialised and has been the same ever since. A century later the celebration of IWD in our country has become an occasion for brunches and 20 per cent discounts at the salon. IWD is and was celebrated to create awareness for the many issues that affect women across the globe. This tradition continues in places like Africa, where women are brutalized and raped daily and in the western world where women are still more often than not, given the short end of the stick when it comes to climbing the corporate ladder. There is nothing wrong in wanting to celebrate being a women, I do it too! What we need to keep in mind is the essence of IWD. Which
essentially is letting a women be who she wants to be, not treating her as an object, giving her the freedom of education, accepting her opinion in shaping society and giving her equal rights! Here in the UAE we see many women making contributions to society, including the female members of the royal families who now play major roles in the government. Similarly we see many powerful women around the world being leaders in their field, but in reality they amount to only a handful and their impact on a global scale is still very small. Every woman deserves the chance to be the best she can be at whatever she desires to be! IWD is a holiday in 27 countries, some of which are for women only; I say that is an admirable start. As for the men out there, it’s time to realise that women deserve respect and admiration on a daily basis as does every human being and not just on special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. Presents are for special occasions, but saying thank you and appreciating all that they do for you is a daily need. Ladies this doesn’t mean you should just sit back and not appreciate what the men in your life do for you. We women have the right to celebrate our woman-hood so have those parties and get yourself pampered because you deserve it, but make these parties count! Don’t just sit there and enjoy the food or discuss fashion and frolics. Next time you are at a party talk about issues faced by women like rapes in India, HIV in Africa, abduction and trafficking in China and racial problems in the USA and European countries. The list is endless; discrimination, violence, dowry and torture are just a few that comprise the tip of the iceberg. I agree that one woman alone sitting here in the UAE may not be able to do much, but she can talk about it. Talking creates awareness, awareness spreads the message and the message brings hope. We live in a multicultural country and when you bring a topic to the table you will hear various viewpoints that will help to better comprehend the situation. When you do understand, you can pass on the knowledge and when enough people know about a problem it will unleash a chain reaction and ultimately a need for change. I know this is heavy talk, but this is reality! We need to face it and brave it. Don’t be naïve, be an Urban Women and have a happy Women’s Day!

THE POWER OF A
THOUSAND
D
aydream about winning a big lottery. It’s fun to consider what we would do with millions at our disposal. Now, open your eyes because realistically and statistically, this is not going to happen. If I scaled it down to a reasonable amount, then we could reasonably dream.
Imagine the wind blew a one thousand dirham bill and it landed at your feet. That’s pocket change for some and for others it is a pot of gold. It’s yours to have. What would you do with one thousand dirham?
PUT ON THE FEED BAG
My kids would visualize one hundred happy meal toys. I could stuff my face with one thousand dirham. Let’s make a memory at the best buffet in town… right honey? No? If we really wanted to go crazy, we would invite several of our friends out for dinner and offer to pay. How’s that for a spending it right?
SAVE FOR A SANDY DAY
Because I am impulsive, I stuff money in hiding places to keep from spending it. I usually forget about it until I am rummaging through the bookshelf and, bam! A treasure has been discovered. It’s exciting to remember how dumb I was to forget it was there. Then I automatically consider myself a genius and go spend it. Better yet, an emergency fund put away is smart and helps avoid credit card debt.

STUFF IS FUN
The newest, hottest phone, tablet, or gadget is at my fingertips with one thousand dirham. That’s a lot of downloads or games we could purchase. That concert we have been waiting for will be here next month. I say splurge a little. Make a memory and spend a night in Dubai. Hit the water park and watch that money slip and slide away. But hey, it was fun while we had it.
DEBT SUCKS
Ok, boring and responsible at the same time. If we came across one thousand dirham, our first thought is usually, what can I buy? Of course that nagging voice in my head reminds me that I am shackled to a debt I owe. It’s not a fun way to spend it but every bit counts when you are chipping away at debt.
GIVE IT AWAY
Giving is one step away from being selfish and one step toward good character. Do you ever give to a favorite charity doing important things? During the year our family purposely encounters people who we want to know better like a waiter, maintenance man, checkout lady. At Christmas, we hand them an envelope with a lot of dirham and then we leave. It’s liberating! A thousand is not that hard to get a hold of. We treat it differently than day dreaming about winning millions in a lottery. This month, purposely set aside the cash of one thousand dirham and do something with it. Talk about it, write down your own ideas and go for it. Be rich

social & Community forum n our las t issue we published a news story about a 14 year old girl who committed suicide after having been caught cheating on an exam. The reality of losing an adolescent as a result of overwhelming hopelessness is an indescribable source of devastation for families, friends and a community in general. Increased awareness about the factors that may lead to these situations is essential in the possible prevention of future similar cases.
The third leading cause of death for 15 – 24 year olds is suicide and at least 25 attempts are made for each successful suicide. Sixty percent of all suicides in the United States are committed with fire arms so keeping them out of reach or eliminating them altogether makes a great deal of sense. Overdosing by means of prescription and non-prescription medicine is also a common method of attempted and completed suicide, and it is important to be aware of and monitor all medications in your home. Although girls are twice as likely to attempt suicide, teenage boys succeed in their attempts 4 times as often due to the severity of methods they choose.
Who is at risk? Remember what it was like being a teenager? Sure being a teen can be associated with a time of incredible and endless possibilities but they are also extremely stressful times of trying to fit in, social pressures and academic expectations and responsibilities. Young people with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or insomnia are at higher risk. Going through major life changes like divorcing parents or those experiencing bullying are also at greater risk.
• • • • • •
Giving away treasured possessions to siblings or friends Losing the desire to take part in favorite things or activities Having trouble concentrating or thinking clearly Experiencing changes in eating or sleeping habits Engaging in risk-taking behaviours Losing interest in school or sports
Potentially suicidal teens will show warning signs and it is essential to recognize and validate them. To consider this behaviour as simply an attention seeking ploy is a grave mistake and ignoring these signs instead of introducing measures of help can lead to the worst case scenario. Always keep open lines of communication and offer your support and unwavering love under all circumstances; what may seem as a minor problem to you can manifest itself as a huge and ominous problem to a teen. If there are communication failures between you and your teenager, offer to enlist the council of a friend relative or health care professional. Losing a child in such a horrific fashion is unthinkable and although it is unlikely to ever affect most of us, the necessary awareness and preventative education should be a part of every parents learning responsibility.
Factors that increase the risk of suicide among teens include: •
• • • • • •
A psychological disorder, especially depression or bipolar disorder, and alcohol and drug use (in fact, approximately 95% of people who die by suicide have a psychological disorder at the time of death) Feelings of distress, irritability, or agitation Feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness often associated with depression A previous suicide attempt A family history of depression or suicide Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse Lack of a support network, poor relationships with parents or peers, and feelings of social isolation
Warning Signs Suicide among teens is usually the result of major life stressors such as problems at school, a breakup with a boyfriend or girlfriend, the death of a loved one, a divorce, or a major family conflict.
Indicators of potential teen suicides may be: • • • • •
Talking about suicide or death in general Giving hints that they might not be around anymore Talking about feeling hopeless or feeling guilty Pulling away from friends or family Writing songs, poems, or letters about death, separation, and loss

Choosing the right
Exercise Shoe
W
alking and running are some of the most natural exercises. Selecting the right shoe for them makes all the difference between enjoying the exercise and or ending up injured. Choosing the wrong shoe can lead to pain and damage.
away. If it hurts, chances are that it won’t get better with time and you risk damage to your feet while you are trying to ‘break in’ a new shoe. Walk or run around the store a little to make sure the shoes feel good while you are using them.
KNOW YOUR FOOT – do a ‘wet test’ to see what type of foot you have. Wet your foot and step on a piece of brown paper or any paper that will show your footprint. If your print shows the full sole, you have flat feet and low arches. Get shoes with motion-control because you most likely roll your feet inward when you walk or run. The most stress will be on the outside heel of your shoe. If your print shows only parts of the heel then your arches are high and you roll your feet outward. This will wear the outer edge of your shoe’s heel and little toe. Look for a cushioned sole that has a soft midsole. If your print has a clear curve on the inside, your arches are neutral and you wear your shoes out all over. Wear a stability shoe with the correct blend of cushion and support for your feet.
PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL – these include clear inserts and gel filled inserts that provide extra shock absorption. These are especially good for people who have pins in their heels but not for people who twist ankles easily, because extra cushioning usually means less traction.
FOOT SIZE – your shoe size does not stay the same your whole life, as many of us think, so get measured regularly. Also, shoe size varies between brands so pay attention to how your shoe fits and not the size. Feet swell over the course of the day and also expand during exercise. Go shoe shopping in the evening rather than earlier in the day so that the shoe will fit your feet when they are at their largest size. BE COMFORTABLE - Wear socks when you try on the shoes. Bring your own pair, especially the pair that you exercise in. If you wear custom foot support items bring those too. Shoes need to fit with your support gear inside. The shoe should feel comfortable right 20
The Source
MAKE SPACE - There should be at least half an inch of space in front of your big toe and preferably at the back as well. This is approximately the width of your thumb. The heel should fit quite tight because it should not slip around and out when you are exercising. The upper part of the shoe should also be snug but not too tight. You should be able to move your toes when you are wearing the shoe.
PAY THE RIGHT AMOUNT - good quality shoes are not cheap but worth it. However, you don’t have to pay for celebrity style shoes or over fashionable ones, unless you want to. You can manage perfectly well with a sensible shoe that fits you rather than an overly fancy one. REPLACE WHEN NEEDED – this should ideally be every 350– 400 miles of use. Once the back of the sole is worn down or your shoe no longer feels supportive, you might need to go shopping again. Try different brands and types before you choose the same shoe again; technology is always changing and bringing us new products with more innovation. There is no one best shoe for everyone. The best shoe for you is the one that fits perfectly, gives proper support and provides the flexibility and cushioning your feet need. The shoe should also correct any motion issues you have based on the type of feet you have. Proper-fitting sports shoes can enhance performance and go a long way in preventing injuries.

“Little Red Corvette” A Man’s first love CLASSIC CARS ARE ALL THE RAGE By Komal R Lakhani
A helicopter pilot for 25 years, Rashid M. Al Tamimi has another passion that’s brought him into the pages of The Source. The Al Ain born Emirati studied at Zayed High School and is now on his way to opening the first Classic Car Museum right here in the garden city. Located next to the Sheikh Zayed Photo Museum at Ain Al Fayada, this is a collection that’s hard to miss. We had a chat with the owner of these beauties - who has a soft spot for red cars - and over a ton of jokes on a picture perfect convertible friendly day, we discovered all about his passion.

What got you started with this hobby? I like cars! Back in 1982 when I was in school, I started drawing cars and wanted to peruse a career in car designing after completing high school. At the time there were no colleges in the UAE offering courses in car design or anything related to that field, so I went to aviation school and graduated as a pilot. About 10 years ago, I bought my first classic car, which was a 1961 Plymouth Fury and started my collection. Why did you open a museum? I started the Abu Dhabi Classic Car Club in 2007 with two other people and it has grown considerably ever since. The keen interest the people in the UAE have for classic cars has been a huge motivation. There was no particular organisation in Al Ain that sparked people’s interest in Classic cars. There are car showrooms but museums are something different. I wanted to share my love of cars and in 2009 I decided to open my own museum. What kind of cars will visitors find in your museum? I collect two types of cars; heritage cars and classic cars. Heritage cars are the ones
which were first to arrive in the UAE even before the union was formed. They date back to the late 1950’s and 60’s. Classic cars are from all over the world and must be at least 25 years old to qualify. We are also very fortunate to have antique cars as part of our collection and these must be at least 80 years old. One of the antique cars here is a 1931 Ford Model A, which we bought from the U.S.A. What do you see for the future of your museum? The museum will be expanding. We are building a two floored museum, with a ground area of 15,000 square feet which should hopefully be completed within the next year. The museum will not only be limited to cars, rather will involve different kinds of antiques from all over the UAE, like pots and pans, carved mirrors, bicycles, motor cycles and much more. In the mean time, we plan to be a part of the Ain Al Fayada Tourism Festival 2014, which is going to be held at the end of March this year. What projects are you currently working on? We generally restore cars during the
There are car showrooms but museums are something different. I wanted to share my love of cars and in 2009 I decided to open my own museum summer months and show them in the winter. Right now we have 30 cars in the museum and 20 in storage that need restoration. I have Thomas Tacher, my technical support in-charge, who helps me with the restoration work and in sourcing parts for the cars. My aim is to collect all the cars that have now been discontinued in the UAE and restore them. When you were studying you didn’t have the opportunities that are available to young Emiratis today; what would you tell them if they shared your passion for automobiles? Guys love their cars; they love to drive them, restore them, do stunts with them show them off, paint them and much more, but you need to do more than that to make a profession out of it. It’s not tricky; it’s just hard work to restore a car. When we started we did not have any experienced people to guide us, we just went with it, and learned the basics. Young people today have much better opportunities with many more experienced people around them. They should enlist their help and work hard towards achieving their goals in life. Everyone hopes to do something, but a job you love is what everyone needs. Always aim for that just like I did with my museum. The Source

Go green this picnic season
W
By K. Radhakishan
ho doesn’t love a picnic? Picnics spell family, love, belonging and a whole lot of fun. When we entertain our kids at the park and use non-biodegradable and non-reusable things, we are stripping these kids of their future.
Don’t worry; here are some tips to help you go green this picnic season: 1. STAY LOCAL Petrol is cheap but that does not mean we should drive around wasting it. Save resources and reduce pollutants by putting fewer miles on your car. Walking or biking is great exercise and gets you better acquainted with your local parks and nature conserves - of which Al Ain has plenty. 2. USE AN ECO-FRIENDLY PICNIC BASKET An eco-friendly picnic basket can be a great addition to your picnic. Most eco-friendly picnic baskets are made from willow and other completely natural, biodegradable materials. If you don’t want to spend on that, use cloth bags; they are sturdy and can be made from recycled material. 3. USE REUSABLES. Buy reusable utensils, cloth napkins, glasses and Tupperware to transport your meals instead of plastic and aluminium disposable containers which are very common here. Disposable cups are used the most and create the maximum waste. On average; every family goes through a pack of 50 cups per picnic. This happens because they get mixed up or roll away due to their light weight. You can invest in colourful tumblers, this way everyone remembers their glass and you can reuse them. If you must buy disposables items, buy recycled options, like unbleached recycled paper napkins. 4. RECYCLE. Fill water from home and invest in a stainless steel thermos for 24

carrying the water cold to the site, instead of buying plastic bottles. 5. CHOOSE FRESH, ORGANIC & LOCAL FOODS Using locally grown organic produce not only supports the local economy but also reduces the carbon footprint. If you choose to eat meat, reduce the amount you would take and make sure the meat is organic. 6. TAKE BACK WHAT YOU PACK. Litter left behind is often non-biodegradable which can contaminate water, land and harm wildlife. Take used grocery bags and separate your garbage into recyclable categories. Carry a pair of gloves and pick up others’ garbage as you go; no harm in cleaning up your city. 7. PROTECT HABITAT FROM PETS AND KIDS. Wild life and plants are part of our ecosystem, and are easily trampled by pets and children. Make sure pets are on leashes, and that children play in designated areas only. 8. USE NATURAL BUG REPELLENT AND SUNSCREEN. Natural products require less pollution in their manufacture and are better for your skin and the environment. Read the labels and start experimenting with brands you like. 9. ORGANIC COTTON TABLECLOTH. Another thing I have noticed in Al Ain is that families use disposable plastic sheets that they roll out on the ground to serve food on. Many families just leave them behind. Take along a reusable table cloth, wipe it when you are done and clean it when you get home. Following these tips will help save resources, energy, our environment and ultimately, your money! Every little action counts so take a step towards a green tomorrow and preserve the earth for our future generations. Share your eco tips with us at family@thesourceuae.com REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE

A
s a tradition in the UAE, the setting of the wedding date marks the beginning of the bride’s preparation for her wedding. Although the groom is also put through a series of preparations, the bride’s preparations are naturally more elaborate and time consuming.
WEDDING PREPARATIONS: In preparation for her wedding, she is anointed with traditional oils and perfumes from head to toe. Her body is rubbed with cleansing and conditioning oils and creams, the hands and feet are decorated with henna and the hair is washed with extracts of amber and jasmine. She is fed only the best of foods that her girlfriends prepare and share with her. Traditionally, she is not seen for forty days except by family members as she rests at home in preparation for her wedding day. Fine pieces of jewelry, perfumes, silk materials, and other necessary items are presented to her by the groom, from which she creates her elaborate trousseau called Addahbia. FESTIVITIES: The festivities usually begin one week before the wedding night. During that week, traditional music, continuous singing, and dancing take place, reflecting the joy shared by the bride’s and the groom’s family. HENNA NIGHT: A few days before the wedding the henna night or Laylat Al Henna takes place which is a very special ladies night only. On this night, the bride’s hands and feet are decorated with henna. The henna night is a time for all the bride’s sisters, female family members, and girlfriends to get together to sing and dance. All female family members and guests also decorate their hands with henna.

OTHER CUSTOMS: Another traditional element of the UAE customs is the Arabian Kohl or eyeliner. The bride, as well as many other UAE women, enjoys lining her eyes on almost all occasions. Famous for their beautiful, large, and black eyes, the UAE women have used the Arabian kohl for many years. After her eyes are lined, her hair is perfumed and her hands and feet are decorated with henna, the bride is ready for her wedding night. The back-to-back feasts and celebrations involve both men and women who usually celebrate separately. Although different areas of the country may have slight differences in their celebrations and customs, the general traditions are the same throughout the country and still adhered to. MARRIAGE FUND & STATE EFFORTS: In 1992, under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a Marriage Fund was set up in order to limit over-spending on weddings and celebrations. The fund was aimed at encouraging the UAE men to marry UAE women, assisting in covering the expenses of the wedding, increasing the birth rate, discouraging men from marrying foreigners and assisting in the grounding of families. The Fund provides between Dh 60,000 to Dh 70,000 depending on certain criteria. In tandem with this, the government has launched a campaign aimed at persuading UAE fathers to accept lower dowries. It has also built special wedding halls where receptions can take place without incurring the expenses associated with expensive hotel receptions. Under the directives and instructions of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to curb soaring wedding expenses which burden the youth, the UAE’s Cabinet, on the 29th of September 1997, approved a letter from the Justice and Islamic Affairs Minister outlining a draft law defining dowries, the money paid by a groom to his bride. Under Islamic Law dowries were set at Dh 20,000 and divorce compensation at Dh 30,000. Wedding parties were also deemed not exceed one day.

T
Shaped like a teardrop in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a spell-binding island jewel offering wild beauty, elephants and white-sand beaches By Marianne Makdisi
he sun was shining as the snake charmer showed my two boys the contents of his wicker baskets. He picked up one of the snakes – it was harmless, he said – and handed it to my younger son. I could tell what my little one was thinking (“I can touch it!”), but I didn’t predict what would happen next. My son suddenly stepped backwards, tripped and landed on the (surprised) cobra’s basket.
If this moment jangled my nerves, the rest of my memories from our trip to Sri Lanka are stunning snapshots of a fascinating, laid-back country. From the fiery cuisine, heavily influenced by neighbouring India, to the tropical forests and 140+ species of frogs, the South East Asian island is an enthralling mix of history, culture and picture-perfect vistas. During our whirlwind visit, we didn’t have time to do the quintessential activities like lazing on a southern beach, whale-watching off the coast or leopard-spotting in a national park, but I was amazed by how much we did manage to cram into two full days.
32
The Source
We based ourselves in Colombo, a colourful city on the Indian Ocean, with streets choked with traffic, bustling markets, an excellent museum and colonial-style buildings, and, from there, took two day-trips to explore the surrounding lush countryside. On both days, we hired a driver, who navigated Sri Lanka’s mostly single-lane roads, narrowly missing the stray dogs that ran out in front of us. It takes a long time to get anywhere (unless you’re on one of the country’s new highways), but the payoff is worth it. On day one, we headed south, along the busy coastal road, and discovered why Sri Lanka – which emerged from a 25-year civil war in 2009 – has been so successful at reinventing itself as a tourist destination. The beaches are, indeed, beautiful, and you don’t have to look far to find a sublime stretch of golden sand, lapped by waves and wafted by swaying palm trees. With an itinerary to stick to, we watched a group of local fishermen haul in a giant net pulsating with their catch, then travelled on to one of the turtle hatcheries, where the children were allowed to gently handle two-day-old turtles. Our next stop was the Madu Ganga river, a shallow wetland area with mangrove islets and a complex ecosystem (blue jellyfish, bats and baby crocodiles were among the wildlife the boys came face-to-face with).
my world
Our river safari took in several islands, one the home to two small temples, and another named Cinnamon Island. From a distance, these islands look like overgrown bushes rising out of the river water, but close up, they’re intriguing patches of dense vegetation. We hushed the boys while admiring the Buddhist and Hindu shrines, and at Cinnamon Island were offered a fish pedicure as we clamboured off the boat. I declined the opportunity to have my dead skin nibbled off by the over-enthusiastic fish, but my husband indulged, lasting all of five seconds before shaking his feet free. We were then guided a short way uphill to a mud hut, where a man showed us how cinnamon is made from what appeared to be a simple, wooden stick. The fragrant spice is a cure-all, according to the notice on the wall, and the smell of the oil I purchased will always remind me of Sri Lanka. The last stop that day was the southern city of Galle, a well-known seaport from ancient times with a huge fort (a World Heritage Site with walls so solid they saved the historic old town from 2004’s devastating tsunami). A wedding was taking place within the fort and we stood for a few moments watching the smartly dressed guests and the cow-drawn wagon, filled with coconuts and decked out with pink-and-white wedding bunting.
Day two saw us heading inland to Sri Lanka’s jungly interior towards Kandy, sampling pineapple and nuts bought from road-side sellers along the way. High in the hills, the city of ancient kings is surrounded by banana and tea plantations, but, alas, Kandy wasn’t to be our final destination: we got as far as the famous elephant orphanage of Pinnewala, and with two young children to consider, the magnificent elephants stopped us in our tracks. Feeding time attracts crowds of tourists, but the boys will never forget giving a baby elephant a bottle of milk. We then walked down to the river and watched in awe as a large herd ambled right by us to take a bath. The children got the chance to wash an elephant’s grey, wrinkly hide, and later, at another nearby stop, we all climbed aboard for a ride. The elephants’ strength as we sat atop our jungle taxi, clinging onto each other, was astonishing, and shortly after dismounting, the boys were back in the water again, scrubbing their new friend clean. We ended the day as I’d begun it – with tea, at a tea factory where we learnt how the tea leaves are processed. Next time, we’ll make it to Kandy to visit the Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddhism’s holiest shrines, but for now, our happy children meant one important thing: a happy holiday.

Hi, I am Abdul Mannan and I am 13 years old. I am a student at Indian School Al-ain and study in grade 9. I am caring, loving and an openly speaking guy. I love to draw and whenever I have free time you will find me with my pencil and with my drawing book. I love playing badminton, cricket, football and doing maths. On weekends you can find me in my dad’s office, parks or in a football stadium. I love being out with my friends and watching movies. I want to be an engineer in the future.
Book Review Diary of a Super Swimmer By Shamini Flint 9-year-old Marcus Atkinson isn’t really all that interested in sport. Unfortunately, his self-help guru dad is convinced that Marcus is a sporting star – he just hasn’t found the right sport yet. Young readers will be laughing out loud as Marcus tries to convince his Dad that he will never be a Super Swimmer. He tries his best, but he just doesn't seem to be able to do anything well - diving, polo, backstroke, butterfly or freestyle. Will he ever be able to achieve anything in the pool?

An interesting journey One day a man was going to market with his son and his donkey. On the way they met a couple, "Why walk when you have a donkey to ride on?" called out the husband, "seat the boy on the donkey.” "I would like that," said the boy, "help me up father." The father did that willingly and moved forward. Soon they met another couple. "How shameful of you!" cried the woman, "let your father ride, won't he be tired?" So, the boy got down and the father rode the donkey. Again they marched on. "Poor boy", said the next person they met, "why should the lazy father ride while his son is walking?" So, the boy got onto the donkey as well. As they went on, they met some travellers.
