n the last issue I dedicated my note to International Women’s Day and it just so happens that this issue is perfectly aligned with Mother’s Day. As such, it just wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t honour one of the most important contributing factors to our very existence; our mothers. By now I must be making quite a splash with the women in town but as for all of our male readers, I promise to swing things back around our way again very soon. Now let’s get back to Mom!
If we are still fortunate enough to have a mother, then let’s get it together this Mother’s day and show her how much she really means to us by combining actions with words to make her feel the way she deserves to feel. One of the most unique blessings and gifts given to us by God is a mother and a mother’s love is incomparable to any other that we will ever experience. Those of us who have been gifted with a mother’s love are very capable of taking it for granted, but for the less fortunate souls who lack this essential virtue, an empty core and heart will surely be the result. We live in houses that only become homes with the addition of a mother so on Mother’s Day turn your home into a temple in honour of the lady that gave so much in order to allow you to be the best you can be. I will never be a mother but I have a mother and am twice blessed with the mother of my two boys. I speak from experience when I say that we owe so much to these incredible human beings. I remember gazing at our two boys sleeping peacefully not long ago and saying to my wife, “our love has manifested itself in the form of these boys and we have created two beautiful human beings.” My wife squeezed my hand and said “it is now our job to nourish their bodies and souls with love, affection and wisdom in order to one day look into the eyes of the men that they will become and say with honesty and conviction, you my boys, with your presence, have created two very proud and contented people” To the mothers of Al Ain and beyond; have a very happy and blessed Mother’s Day!

Hilton Al Ain shares coffee with Al Ain Zoo Al Ain Zoo today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hilton Al Ain hotel, which details that the Hotel will donate a share of its coffee shop profits to Al Ain Zoo for the coming months to support conservation efforts. To mark the occasion, a ceremony took place at Al Ain Zoo in the presence of H.E. Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Director General of the Zoo & Aquarium Public Institution in Al Ain; Mr. Jacques Claudel, Hilton Al Ain General Manager; as well as directors and department heads from the organisations. The initiative is in line with the joint objectives of both Al Ain Zoo and the Hilton Al Ain in the area of conservation and the environment. The collaboration also supports tourism in the area, with Al Ain Zoo being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United Arab Emirates. H.E. Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri commented: “This collaboration between Al Ain Zoo and the Al Ain Hilton Hotel helps us to educate the community about the role of the Zoo and its commitment as a leader in conservation. Our programme focuses on animal management, wildlife sustainability
and protection of endangered species, and also introduces a strong incentive to support concerted community efforts in the UAE. NRC Signs Knowledge Exchange
The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Washington D.C. The signing took place during a recent visit by a delegation from NRC to the US where it met with NIDA and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The agreement will see NRC and NIDA collaborate to exchange knowledge in four areas including raising awareness for addiction prevention in schools and within the family and larger community, monitoring the risk of addiction in the community, scientific research and specialized studies on addiction, in addition to fellowship programs and scholarships in the field of addiction. During the visit, H.E. Dr. Hamad Al Ghaferi, Director General of NRC, showcased NRC’s achievements and its leading role in reducing the impact of addiction on society through its prevention and treatment programs. NIDA and SAMHSA shared their expertise in combatting addiction through prevention, research, in addition to surveillance and monitoring. Both entities provided evidence of the effectiveness of their methodologies by showcasing their positive outcomes, with NRC discussing the applicability of these methodologies and prospects of adapting them for the UAE. 10

Al Ain Rotana’s fourth Walkathon Time to wage a endurance WAR for Children with Cancer
On Saturday, April 5th, Wadi Adventure will be hosting the 6th edition of the hugely successful “WADI ADVENTURE RACE” series – a grueling 10km obstacle course, sending participants running, crawling, carrying, swimming, swinging and climbing their way to the finish line.
Al Ain Rotana, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Theyab Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, in collaboration with the UAE Red Crescent, Al Ain Rotana hosted the fourth Walkathon for Children with Cancer.
The walk started at 9:00am from Al Ain Rotana hotel and around the Jahili park block for around 30 minutes. Afterwards the hotel announced the amount that was collected up to that time which was AED 131611 and the donations process is still ongoing and the amount now exceeds AED 250000. Mr. Ayman Gharib, the General Manager of Al Ain Rotana said, “We started sponsoring such charitable activities some years ago, for we believe that as an established organization in the Emirates, we have a responsibility to help the community. We are not only a business but also have a social responsibility to serve the people of our community. We hope to keep the success with the support of his Highness Sheikh Theyab Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyaan

Al Ain Zoo Welcomes New Collection of Flamingo Birds
As part of its major enhancements and expansion projects, Al Ain Zoo welcomed a new collection of flamingo birds to the exhibits surrounding the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre. Embedded within the UAE World Desert, the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre will feature educational exhibits that celebrate the wildlife and traditions of the desert, as well as the conservation-related vision of the late H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The new addition of flamingoes, obtained from a private institution in Dubai, falls in line with Al Ain Zoo’s commitment to provide visitors with entertaining, interactive, and educational activities. These unique birds are also known for their large size, long legs and using only one leg when relaxing or sleeping.
The “Wadi Adventure Race” (WAR) series began in November 2012 with 75 participants and a handful of spectators. Each subsequent event has seen a massive growth in interest and popularity from runners, spectators and sponsors alike. WAR 5 saw 550 runners, and WAR 6 is set to be the biggest event to date. Earth Hour returns on March 29 at 8.30pm Global environmental movement calls on UAE residents to Get Enlightened and Make the Switch to energy efficient lighting. Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF is calling on UAE residents and organisations to unite in positive action for our planet this Earth Hour. Alongside the traditional call to turn off the lights for one hour at 8.30pm on March 29, UAE residents are being urged to join this global environmental movement by switching to energy efficient lighting. Ida Tillisch, Director General of EWS-WWF said: “By getting enlightened on the topic and making the switch to energy efficient lighting it has been conservatively calculated by the Ecological Footprint Initiative, that the UAE can collectively reduce its carbon emissions by 940,000 tonnes. This is the equivalent of removing 165,000 cars from the roads every single year.

Mother’s Day March 21st marks the day of honouring mother’s here in the UAE and although it is not celebrated on the same day everywhere in the world, the tradition is observed by more than 40 countries worldwide.
We all have mothers but I am sure that very few of us are familiar with the history of this particular celebration. Mother’s Day can be traced as far back as ancient Greece, where in honour of Rhea, the mother of the Gods, offerings of honey cakes, drinks and flowers were made at dawn. The Romans had Magna Mater (great mother) who was also the mother of all Gods and the Festival of Hilaria was celebrated in her honour each year in March. A temple was built for her and gifts were brought at this time. “Mothering Sunday” was celebrated in England during the 1600’s on the fourth Sunday of Lent to pay tribute to the mothers of England. Many of the poor who worked as servants far away from their homes were given a holiday on this day to return to their mothers to celebrate. Modern Mother’s day began in the United States with Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910), a pacifist and writer from Boston that first suggested a Mother’s Day in 1872, designed as a day to observe peace. Distraught by the ongoing Franco-Prussian war in Europe so soon after the American Civil War, she labored towards the creation of a “Mother’s Day for Peace” on June 2nd. With the lack of support from men, she appealed to war mothers who knew better than most about the waste of human life during these times of war. Her lobbying attempts to ground a Mother’s day did not succeed, but Julia did manage to establish the American branch of the Women’s International Peace Association that went on to observe a day dedicated to peace. Although her version of Mothers' Day never really caught on, Howe went on to head the American branch of the Women's International Peace Association, which observed a day dedicated to peace.
Julia Ward Howe Mother’s Day as we know it today officially began in the 1900’s thanks to Anna Jarvis who with the financial backing of a Philadelphia department store owner, John Wanamaker, organized the first Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton West Virginia in May of 1908. Following the success of this first celebration, Anna continued her push towards establishing a national holiday and by 1912 many States, towns and churches had adopted the idea. She finally hit the jack-pot when in 1914; President Woodrow Wilson rewarded her persistence by declaring the second Sunday in May Mother’s Day; an official national holiday. I should mention that there is a huge irony here; Anna Jarvis who was in fact the mother of Mother’s Day was never a mother herself and furthermore, in spite of her great success, she spent most of her remaining life denouncing the day that she so laboriously created. Anna’s vision of Mother’s Day was a day of humble celebration between mothers and families but it was not long after its conception that florists, card companies and various other merchants capitalized on the popularity of the celebration. I’m even more envious of those who adorn their kitchen windows with the dainty pots growing herbs and vegetables. They are my heroes in this organic age and unlike them with the simple touch of my finger, I have the power to kill.

Many of us live in a community of beige concrete villas. I love our “Garden City,” and want to capture its color and put it around my house. I want to walk out my back door and see a sacred little shrub waiting for me. Lately, I am really stretching my botanist skills. How about you? Could your space use a little color these days?
GOOD FOR GROWTH Veggies: Looking to go organic? Squash and Gourds are great for our desert heat. A little sand and compost will get these odd shapes growing in no time. Once you get started, figure out how to bake, fry, sauté, and soufflé these veggies for a great meal. Low Maintenance Indoor: This is for me. Check out an Aloe plant or an Areca Palm. Both can take the sunlight and the heat. Either plant likes dry soil so people like me can forget to water them as often as I need to.

ingested by kids or animals. The Frangipani (Plumeria) is also a great looking tree and is currently popular with several of my neighbors. START SIMPLE Failing is a prerequisite for success. Start with just one plant and see what you can do with it before branching out to something different. I’ve got one plant I believe is a vine of some kind. I have left it alone to do its thing and it has spread and become a good watering chore for the kids. Check out a few nurseries in town including The Garden Center next to Al Ain Mall, or within the camel market behind Bawadi Mall. Plants bring oxygen. Leaves bring color. Not only are plants great for your environment, they can also dress up the dead space in and around your home. Green Men, you have inspired me. Let’s get out there and grow something good.

off at school, I witnessed two grown men engage in a classic display of “road rage”. It escalated to a full blown punching match and left the entire surrounding throng of motorists and pedestrians shaking their heads in disgust and disbelief.

ROAD RAGE IS PSYCHOLOGICAL Let’s examine the physical changes in our bodies when we become enraged: •

Generosity is easier to forget, but offensive actions stick in the brain. This leads to dwelling, which only escalates anger. People are more likely to exaggerate feelings of hurt than feelings of happiness.
Stress is a main component in road rage. • There is a reason why a majority of road rage incidents occur during rush hour. The more stress a driver is under, the more emotionally distraught they are and the more likely they are to succumb to aggressive driving. Stress heightens our potential for aggression and causes a "fight or flight" response that can lead to hostile spontaneity.
IT'S AVOIDABLE •
Though many people have a naturally short fuse and are prone to bouts of rage easily, there are things that a driver can keep in mind to keep from driving aggressively.
Avoiding aggression while driving •
Play relaxing music or perhaps even a comedy CD. Anything to lighten the mood inside of your vehicle.
•
Try to think of the other cars on the road as other humans, not other machines. Act as though you were walking in a crowded area; you probably wouldn't give the middle finger to someone who accidentally walked in front of you, especially if they apologized.
•
If others are riding with you, make light or funny conversation with them.
•
Remember to breathe and if provoked, count to 20. This will ensure that you consider your reaction before acting on a whim.
•
Recognize that those around you are also prone to acting impulsively and that their actions or offensive gestures are not personal attacks. The Source

You want to start a fitness program, but don’t know how to start? Don’t worry because if you know how to walk, you are well on your way! You just need a good pair of shoes, comfortable clothing and inspiration.
BEFORE YOU WALK GO SLOW – The hardest part of starting any walking program is just walking out your door. Start by walking 5 or 10 minutes and add five minutes every week till you are comfortable and reach a regular, sustainable time. If you overdo it, the chances of quitting the program increase. DRESS CORRECTLY – wear proper shoes and socks. Cotton socks are the best. Wear comfortable loose clothing and remember, you will be warmer as you walk so wear layers accordingly. Don’t walk during the hottest time of the day but if you do walk in bright sunshine, wear sunscreen, sunglasses and something to cover your head and the back of your neck to prevent heat stroke. WARM UP – stretch your muscles or start at a very slow pace, gradually building up speed. This prevents injuries and reduces aches and pains later on. Being too tired or in pain after exercise demotivates you. 20

WHILE YOU WALK Posture – this is very important to prevent injuries, strengthen your muscles and improve the effectiveness of your exercise. Walk tall, hold your head up, keep your eyes forward and avoid looking at your feet and the ground. Your shoulders should be back and loose. Tighten your abdominal muscles and swing your arms wide and loose. Pace – if you want health benefits, then walk for half an hour a day at a pace that is comfortable. If you want to improve fitness then up to thirty minutes at a fast pace 3-4 times/week is good. You should be breathing hard but not gasping for air. For weight loss, 45-60 minutes a day for five days a week is recommended. Once 30-60 minutes for five days a week becomes comfortable, increase your speed to make your exercise more effective. Water – hydration is very important especially in this climate. Drink plenty of water before, during and after walking. Keep water with you, especially if you know there will be none along the way. Look around – for most people listening to music or chatting on their mobiles are great ways to pass the time while walking. However, be careful of traffic and your surroundings to avoid injury.
AFTER YOU WALK The cool down period of your walk is very important and also prevents injuries. You can end your walk with a slower cool down pace and stretch well afterwards. Make sure to drink plenty of water after your walk. Try altering your route to keep things interesting and for safety reasons, always inform a family member or friend where you might be going and for how long. Walking is a basic movement we use every day but you need discipline to walk enough and enjoy its tremendous health benefits. It is recommended that healthy individuals take at least 10,000 steps a day for exercise. A pedometer can help you track this and so can apps on your mobile. Before you start any exercise program, check with your doctor. This is especially important if you don’t regularly exercise, have a condition such as diabetes, hypertension or are pregnant.

Mr Al Maamari is a man of many talents. His accomplishments include being a brigadier in the military, founding a medical centre, serving as the Undersecretary for the AL Ain Sports Club, building a school and opening his own hospital. Mohammed Al Maamari, chairman of the Ain Al Khaleej Hospital is our Emirati in focus for this issue. The Al Ain born and raised Mr Al Maamari, a very punctual and serious man combined with an innate sense of humour, took time from his busy schedule to answer some of our questions. 22

al majlis You are now the proud owner of a hospital, how did that come about? I always wanted to serve my country and its people. I started the Emirates Medical Centre and Pharmacy in Al Ain 35 years ago while I was still in the military. The concept for the Ain Al Khaleej Hospital started in June of ‘96 and we finally had our soft opening in 2012. Al Ain has one of the best hospitals in the UAE. Cases from all over the UAE are sent to Tawam hospital. We want Ain Al Khaleej to keep in line with this and aim to make Ain Al Khaleej a seven star hospital. It is designed with the latest equipment and selected staff capable of handling various cases. He adds that in the future he hopes to have more and more Emiratis choosing to become doctors and serve the people of their country. Doctors know how to treat patients and give them medicine and I know how to deal with doctors and provide them with the necessary equipment and facilities. My focus was not only on medicine but Education as well. I started the Ain Al Khaleej School which now has 1,000 students. On being asked whether he wanted to be a doctor himself he said… “Why not, maybe someday,” he said with a smile. “I always envisioned my son to be a doctor and by the grace of God this dream of mine has been achieved.” His son who is a doctor at the Sheikh Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi is not the only doctor in his family. Mr Al Maamari adds “There are eight doctors in my family.”
What does the future hold in your vision? “In the future I would love to expand the school and build branches not only in Al Ain but also in Abu Dhabi. Along with that I hope to open more hospitals in Abu Dhabi to serve my people with honour.” One thing I couldn’t help notice was Mr Al Maamari’s phone, which was a model back from 2001, I asked why he has not changed his mobile phone in these changing times, to which he very brilliantly answered: “There is an Arabic saying; ‘those who have no past, have no future.’ I am happy with my phone. Life is simplicity; you should not exaggerate and live beyond your means as this is a recipe for disaster” Interestingly Mr Al Maamari still has a suit from 1969 hanging in his closet. He jokingly added, “I fit the suit but the suit does not fit me anymore.” You have had a very vivid life; what other passions do you have? Al Ain is home and always has been, but I do love to travel. I have travelled to many parts of the world like the UK, the USA and Africa, but my favourite is Cape Town in South Africa. Opening a hospital was a huge challenge and accomplishment; what advice would you give to the younger generation of Emiratis reaching for their goals?

The nasty world of cyber predators By K. Radhakishan
In the first of this two part series, we want to inform parents about the increasing number of cyber predators who might be targeting your children. Sexual predators do exist and are a very real threat. They target both boys and girls of all ages and use the anonymity of the internet to their advantage by taking up any form and identity. Many are master manipulators with skills that can cripple any child's sense of awareness. This is known as the grooming process and predators look for children that are more technically savvy than their parents. They look for children that are emotionally vulnerable as a result of personal issues at school or at home. They use these issues to befriend the victim and empathize with them while building a pseudo friendship and trust. If a child indicates frustration with parents or teachers at school, the predator might suggest the child's parents are way too strict or their teacher is being unfair and this plays right into the adolescent mind as they look for people to verify their feelings. With Instant Messaging (IM) and Social Networking profiles being available for public view, predators can easily find information about potential victims since many naive children list personal information with no regard for safety. My own nephew did that, as soon I noticed it, I got him to change his privacy setting. He wanted his cell phone number up on his Facebook for his friends to see not realising anyone and everyone could see it. Simple information like, school, likes 24

and dislikes can allow predators to target them. Once a predator IMs or Chats with a victim and gains their trust, they often send pornographic pictures via these same IM sessions or e-mail and sometimes gifts through the mail. They might even have a toll free phone number for the victim to call or mail a cell phone so it will not show up on their parent's phone bill. If the victim tries to cut off communication, predators will often convince them that they will tell their parents what they have been doing online and that they have viewed pornographic pictures, and scare the victim into continuing the relationship. To curb such problems, the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) runs a ‘How to Say No programme’ in Arabic throughout schools in Sharjah and Ajman, which teaches children how to protect themselves from abuse; particularly sexual abuse. Ahmed Al Tartoor from the SSSD says “we hope to offer the program in English soon, and are happy to collaborate with any school that’s wants to incorporate it in their curriculum.” The centre also provides a 24 hour Child Help Line at 800700 to help children up to the age of 18 regardless of their nationality. Understanding the traditional UAE houses
Architecture in the Gulf is generally shaped by four inter-related factors: geographic location, economic activity, social status of the residents, and tribal affiliation. In addition, geographic location and economic activity are both affected by seasonal climactic concerns. The traditional architecture of the UAE is basically the result of two main factors: the hot and humid climate and people’s social lives and religion. The first architectural elements for construction in the country to combat its hot weather were the traditional wind-towers, called barajils. Houses used these in the early twentieth century for simple air conditioning. Wind-towers have four open sides, each of which is hollowed into a concave v-shape that deflects the wind down, cooling the rooms below. Water thrown on the floor beneath the tower cools the house as the water evaporates. During the colder seasons, the vents can be closed.

Although there is no longer a need for wind towers; some houses still incorporate them in their design for a stunning cultural effect. The second traditional element for the hot weather is the proximity of buildings, creating narrow alleys between them, called in Arabic Sikkas. These alleys are shaded during the day as a result of the walls of neighboring buildings. Another benefit of these narrows is the creation of wind tunnels further assisting in the cooling process of the habitat. This is personally something I love, especially when you have to run down to nearby grocery stores on hot summer afternoons. Another design element in the UAE’s architecture was inspired by the people’s religion. As a result, the rooms of the houses generally faced the courtyard and high exterior walls surrounded these courtyards. These walls had a few tiny small windows or some ventilation holes high up in the wall to protect the modesty and privacy of the people. In addition to the above elements, the floral patterns are also an Islamic architectural element. It represents nature with the use of symbols such as flowers, leaves, and trees. These can be found in various parts of a building or house. Last but not the least is the water element; it reflects architecture and multiplies the
decorative themes, emphasizing the visual attraction. Water is found in the form of courtyard pools and fountains which cool the area while adding to the beauty of the landscape. ong before neighbouring Dubai’s pre2008 property boom came a n o t h e r economic bubble of an altogether more colourful nature. Back in the mid-17th century, during the Dutch Golden Age, tulips were all the rage. The curvaceous flower became so popular that the craze led to a phenomenon known as ‘Tulip Mania’. Tulip bulbs were sough-after assets and, on several occasions, trade in tulip bulbs would soar, only for the market to crash later. The Root en geel Van Leyden tulip cost 100 guilders at its peak, while the Anvers bulb trumped everything at 510 guilders. By way of comparison: a school teacher in Holland in the 17th century earned 200 guilders a year. As people snapped up the bulbs, they became so outrageously expensive that they were used as money, until the world’s first economic bubble collapsed.

FLOWER PARK
Arguably one of the world’s most spectacular planned gardens, Keukenhof is situated in Lisse, a small village in South Holland, roughly 30 miles southwest of Amsterdam. Only open for two months a year, the garden showcases more than 7 million tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, orchids, roses, carnations, irises and lilies over 32 hectares of artfully arranged displays. There are indoor pavilions, too, featuring dazzling flower and plant shows and, while you’re unlikely to enjoy the grounds in solitude (the gardens are a huge tourist draw, attracting around 800,000 visitors from over 100 countries in just eight weeks), you can’t fail to be spellbound by the glorious décor: nowhere else will you find such an abundance of blazing colours and fragrances.
Every year, Keukenhof creates a totally new image according to a central theme. This year, the theme is Holland, and the tulip will take even more of a starring role. Authentic tulips from the 16th and 17th centuries will flower in the renewed Historic Garden, and the Walk of Fame will feature tulips named after famous people, including Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt. For those interested in the history of the tulip, a new interactive exhibition will shed light on tulip mania, as well as highlight the flower’s role in today’s society as a contemporary icon.

The centrepiece of the 2014 theme is a flower bulb mosaic depicting an Amsterdam canal scene with a tulip as large as a canal house. The 23 x 13-metre mosaic is planted with 60,000 tulips and muscaris, and is designed to symbolise tulip mania during the Golden Age. Getting to Keukenhof is easy; during the season a direct bus service runs from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport (about seven hour’s flying time from the UAE) and from the city centre. Purchasing a combi ticket that covers your return bus fare and entrance fee will mean you’ll avoid the long queue for tickets at the park. Be sure to enjoy the view on the way: the ride passes through the heart of the commercial tulip fields, which, in peak season, resemble strips of huge bright ribbons. INGREDIENTS Fresh Noodle Boiled 200g | Beef (Fried) 40g | Chicken (Fried) 40g | Broccoli 20g | Mushroom 4 0g | Mix Soya Sauce 1tbsp | Sweet & Sour Sauce 1tbsp | Salt to taste | Chicken Seasoning 1/2tsp | White Pepper Powder 1/4tsp | Garlic Paste 1tsp | Ginger Paste 1tsp | Oil 1tbsp | Spring Onion 1tsp METHOD • Put oil in the pan/wok add ginger and
garlic paste, sauté for some time, add vegetables and sauté for a few minutes longer. •
Add chicken, beef, noddles and other ingredients and stir fry.

Remove and serve in pasta bowl and garnish with spring onion.
