most delightful thing occurred a few days after the release of our last issue that I must share with you. In fact, it was so enormously fabulous, that it inspired a plan designed to garner increased interest and reader interaction as we continue to crank out issue after issue of our humble and proud Al Ain publication. It seems that people are actually reading my director’s note and one such gentleman not only read the last one, he responded in such an eloquent manner that it left me completely humbled. This is what he wrote: Greetings

I just wanted to thank you for the stunning and touching Note in this edition. As I grow older, I appreciate more and more the simple truths that make me an authentic human being in an often trying and testing world. Your words reminded me that our human quest is the same, regardless of those identifiers that distinguish us from each other. It is uplifting to know that at a most fundamental level, we're all profoundly interconnected, and this makes the journey one of togetherness and mutual reaching out. I thank you sincerely for these impactful words. Ahmad Barnard You can well imagine how blown away I was by this response, so I have invited Mr. Barnard to be our special guest director in one of our upcoming issues to share more of his thoughts and wisdom with our readers. To keep things even more enticing, I will continue sharing my page with other special guest director’s out there in reader land. If you would like to participate, simply send us your profound message in no more than 350 well written words, and you might just find yourself sitting in the director’s chair. Not only am I excited to hear from you, I welcome the fresh inspiration and most important of all, cure for my occasional writer’s block. PET: DOG NAME: MARY LOCATION: Currently being fostered in Al Ain Meet Mary! She is 1 year old, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed and spayed. Very good with other dogs; she is still extremely shy and in a new home will probably hide under a table for the first week or so. She eventually comes out of her shell but does so much quicker if there are other friendly dogs at home that she can copy and feel more comfortable with. She was found with a broken leg which has now been fixed. For more information email Animal Action Abu Dhabi, animal.action@hotmail.com or for more pets for adoption visit www. adopt-me.ae

y k c a W d l r o W FISH SLAPPING A 52-year-old victim was working behind the fish counter at Accrington's Asda store, when a teenage girl came up to ask about different types of fish. But when the shop assistant went to answer, the girl picked up a large wet bream, and without warning slapped the worker across the face before fleeing from the store. The victim thought the incident was probably being filmed by a man on his mobile phone standing nearby, who also ran from the shop when he was challenged. Police released CCTV footage of the attack in an attempt to track down the suspects. A 13-year-old girl has been found guilty. She later took part in a "community resolution", agreeing to write the victim a letter of apology, and the matter has now been resolved, Lancashire Police said.

Have you entered one of The Source's fabulous competitions? Here's what one lucky winner had to say! Dear Farid, We just want to thank you and the Source. We had a great time at the Grand Mercure. Everything went very well indeed. The service provided by the entire hotel staff was outstanding! We thoroughly enjoyed the buffet dinner and would like to extend a special thanks to Imtiaz Hussain, the food and beverage manager, for taking such good care of us. After, we got back from the pool, Imtiaz had sent a fruit basket to our room - a very nice surprise. Arun Panicker, the front office manager, went to great lengths to ensure that our stay was a pleasant and memorable one. The hotel is just far enough away from home to help us forget all the issues and stuff down the hill; kind of like a slice of heaven up there. Thanks again, Tim and Julie Behnke

Funcity is of course a necessity. The action zone is the children's back bone. The number of malls don't let us stay in our halls (house). Hi Dr Gabe, I work long hours in front of the computer, I try to give my eyes a break as much as possible. Recently my eyes have started watering a lot, even if I look at the screen for less than an hour. I wear glasses, so do you think I should get my number checked or could it be something else altogether?" (Anonymous) Dear Reader, Great question. Eye tearing is a common problem and eye strain from daily looking at a screen can cause eye tearing. However, there may be other reasons for changes in your vision, and other causes for eye tearing such as allergies or infections. You may ultimately only need a new eye glass prescription, but an examination with an eye doctor would be prudent. The doctor is always on call at The Source and asking the right questions can lead to better health. Dr. Gabriel comes to us from Oasis Hospital, where he practices family medicine. Simply send your questions to askthedoctor@ thesourceuae.com and see them answered and published in the magazine.

Al Ain Zoo Welcomes New American Dwarf Crocodiles As part of its commitment to internationallyimportant conservation programmes that focus on animal management and wildlife sustainability, and in a joint collaboration with Dubai Mall’s Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, Al Ain Zoo has welcomed a new group of endangered American Dwarf Crocodiles. A new addition to Al Ain Zoo’s animal collection, the Dwarf Crocodiles, classified as endangered by International Union for the Conservation of Nature list (ICUN), can be seen on exhibit at the zoo’s Reptile House. Guests now have the opportunity to witness the smallest crocodiles found in the world, with adult species reaching a length of no more than 1.5 to 1.6 metres, and weighing about 30 kilograms. Visitors will also be able to watch the grey Saltwater Crocodiles found at the zoo, which weigh 200 kilograms and reach approximately eight metres in length. H.E. Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Director General of the Zoo & Aquarium Public Institution in Al Ain, commented: “The addition of the endangered American Dwarf Crocodiles falls directly in line with our commitment to wildlife preservation and conservation, as we continue working with local, regional and international partners to drive unified, coordinated efforts

in this sphere. Through unmatched, exciting visitor experiences, we aim to also provide a learning environment that focuses on educating our visitors and engaging them in this global cause.” The infant American Dwarf Crocodiles are yellow with a brown tint, turning into a dark brown colour by maturity, while their heads are a fascinating orange colour. The three Emirati sisters were visiting London, along with three children aged between 7-12 years, when they were attacked by an assailant with a hammer in their hotel room. The incident took place on the seventh floor of the Cumberland Hotel in Marble Arch in the early hours of April 6 when the victims were interrupted by a burglar who had gained access to their unlocked room.

It has been confirmed that the Court of First Instance in Hammersmith, London, in a summary trial, has ordered the detaining of the suspects in the case and referred them to trial before the criminal court on April 17.

Abu Dhabi-based newspaper The National reported the burglar also stole around $1,633 worth of goods from the victims’ hotel room during the assault. A spokesperson for London’s New Scotland Yard said they could not confirm the details in the report as the case is still under investigation. Philip Spence, 32, was charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated burglary. Thomas Efremi, 56, was charged with handling stolen goods and fraud by 10

The WAM news agency also confirmed Abu Dhabi Police had sent a delegation to London to assist its British counterparts in the investigation into the attack and UAE officers were present during the summary trial. “HH Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, has dispatched a team from Abu Dhabi Police, which provided psychological support to the victims, and ordered coordination with the British police on arresting the suspects and bringing them to justice as soon as possible," UAE Ambassador to the UK, Abdul Rehman Ghanem Al Mutaiwei, said in a statement published by WAM.

Mers virus raises the red flag for Filipino medics. Grace Princesa, Philippine Ambassador to the UAE has urged Filipinos working in the medical field to take necessary precautions and better care of their health following the death of a Filipino paramedic infected with the Middle East Respiratory coronavirus (MersCoV) in Al Ain.

A place where we discuss the coolest and useful gadgets and accessories Welcome to the newest section of The Source. This week we discuss a new kind of keyboard designed for iPad users. We know there are many already available; read on to know what makes this one interesting. Tablet users who find typing on a flat touchscreen a little difficult might be interested in a new style of keyboard that has been designed to be used with touchscreen tablets. The Touchfire has been created to provide a slim physical keyboard that lays over the top of the tablets touchscreen, providing raised keys to aid with touch typing and finger positioning. This keyboard is made from silicone and provides a lightweight alternative to carrying a full sized Bluetooth keyboard case or separate keyboard to type on. The Touchfire is only available for Apple’s iPad tablets right now; the company intends to design suitable ones for other tablets in the future. Currently this is only avalibale online, but we are sure it will soon make its way into our markets.

Maids can be Time Bombs

Families in the UAE should not mistreat their housemaids as this could turn them into time bombs inside their homes and push them to hurt their children, a senior Dubai police officer was quoted on Tuesday as saying. Maids who ask their employers to allow them to travel home should not be stopped. They should be either permitted to take leave or sent back to the local labour office for repatriation, said Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, assistant police commander for criminal affairs. He said an Ethiopian maid who stabbed three children in Dubai this week cited mistreatment by their mother and her failure to pay her wages for three months. Mansouri said mothers must look after their children and not leave this for the maids, adding that most families in the UAE treat their maids properly except for some individual cases. Good treatment of housemaids will protect children from a possible retaliation by maids.

ack in 1976 my dad paid $27,000 for a three-bedroom bombsite in Port Fairy, a decrepit seaside town of 2200 in rural Victoria, Australia. That house was a mouse-infested dump, stinking with a tuberculoid damp that clawed the back of our throats.

My parents transformed it into a feature in Home Beautiful Magazine. I believe it to be my mother’s proudest moment. I recall her pictured splendiferous amid the lavender, the aroma of which surges through me as I type, as if once again I am there at her side on a balmy summer evening, agitating for ice cream. The town soon mirrored my dad’s efforts at renovation. Something called “heritage” had been discovered, and before you knew it every sagging, water-damaged eyesore was infested with preservationists. The engine that drove the renaissance was an economic shift away from the traditional reliance upon fishing, farming and a bit o’ smugglin’. Port Fairy hit upon the idea of the Folk Music Festival. It changed fortunes. Even my dad’s, though not as he wished. While he sold the house for four times what he paid, the dollar was worth so much less than when he bought it that the new place cost just as much. There wasn’t any profit in it.

The point is that the value of cash has Lehmanbrothered. Up until twenty years ago, a millionaire was “rich.” Nowadays you need a collection of cars and houses, a boat, an investment portfolio and a tropical island to garner that moniker - an expert in Australian investment recently told me that you need assets of $100 million to ascend to the ranks of the “wealthy.” How does anyone make that much cash? It seems they sell apps to Facebook. The guys at Whatsapp are purchasing collections of cars and houses, boats,

investment portfolios and tropical islands after selling their product for 19 billion dollaz. How could anything possibly be worth that much? Manchester United, the world’s most valuable sporting franchise, glories in a following of 650 million Neanderthals, who would club each other to be first under the wheels of the team Flintstone-mobile, should it need help unsticking itself from the financial sand. Value: $2.23 billion or 11.73 percent of an app supported by 450 million neurotically fickle interneters making one-time payments of 99 cents for iOS or 99 cents a year for Android. It don’t add up. The answer, of course, is advertising; except it isn’t. Advertising clashes with the proprietors' principles; the reason summed up on their website - not with an economic rationale as you might think - but with a quote by Tyler Durden, a figment of imagination of a fictional character in “Fight Club.” “Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy [stuff] we don’t need,” says sage Tyler. Speaking of [stuff] we don’t need, there’s this messaging app… The value of money has fallen so low that I fear it will lose meaning entirely. Soon, the economic system will implode and we will be without electricity, food or water; our cities in flaming ruins; the mobile phone networks erupting in showers of sparks as the towers topple onto the shanties of the dispossessed. And there will be the kings of the internet, alone on their tropical islands, madly dispatching messages off to nobody, nowhere (ne1 out thr?) as if that made sense. 19 BILLION. Sorry, that just don’t.

How to Identify Your Skin Type

S

kin can be divided into five main types which are oily, dry, normal, combination skin and sensitive skin – I also like to include a sixth type called problematic.

The best time to examine your skin to determine your skin type is before washing your face in the morning. Place a tissue paper on top of your face, pat it on and then slowly remove. You can identify your skin type depending on what is left on the tissue. OILY SKIN: Oily skin is prone to acne, blackheads and whiteheads and people with this type of skin usually complain of shinny and greasy skin, especially in hot and humid weather. If you see big oil spots on the tissue paper across your face (such as forehead, cheeks and nose), this is an indication of oily skin. You may use the Pond’s Clear Balance Oil Control because it effectively absorbs excess oil, dirt and make-up without over drying the skin. The other way to know if you have oily skin is to look your T-zone area: if you have wide pores then you most likely have oily skin. For this area, you should use Pond’s Clear Balance No Blackheads as the scrub helps remove stubborn dirt from deep within the skin. DRY SKIN: This skin type is prone to eczema and becoming considered sensitive skin. It is always flaky and has a rough feeling to it when you touch it or when it’s not moisturized. Completely opposite of oily skin, the tissue paper test for this skin type hardly leaves any oil spots and the T-zone area barely has any pores.

NORMAL SKIN: If you have normal skin, then you’re lucky! Normal skin has the right amount of oily and dry skin. The tissue test leaves small dots of oil scattered around the faces and the pores are small. This skin type can be tipped over either to oily skin if too much moisturizing is done, or to dry skin if there is an overuse of harsh drying skin care products. I suggest using Pond’s Clear Balance Smooth Pores if you have this skin type.

Dr. Lillian Khan Dermatologist & Brand Expert for Pond’s Arabia

COMBINATION SKIN: If you have combination skin, the T-zone area is usually oily while dry flaky skin is seen on other areas of the face. The morning paper tissue test for this skin type leaves traces of larger oil spots from the T-zone area and few, small oil spots from other areas of the face. You might also notice wider pores in the T-zone area and smaller pores elsewhere on the face. The Pond’s Clear Balance Clear Solutions contains neem plant extract which you should use to clear up your complexion as it helps remove dirt, oil and make-up SENSITIVE SKIN: This skin type gets irritated easily when exposed to any harsh chemicals, skin care products with any preservatives, acids, perfumes, or coloring. It usually has slight redness on the cheeks which may increase when applying any non-hypo allergic products. PROBLEMATIC SKIN: People with acne, rosacea and other dermatological issues fall under this category. These people need to be evaluated by a skin care specialist and a dermatologist to advise on proper skin care products.

EXERCISE

R

ecently, I discovered that men in the UAE live 20 years younger than the global average. Dr. Obaid Al Jasem, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Dubai Hospital, says, “Your bad lifestyle is putting a burden on your heart.”

Gulfnews.com reported that one in every four deaths in the UAE is because of heart disease. This has overtaken traffic accidents as the number one killer. My concern has never been when I am going to die; it is how I’m going to die. I’m not a big fan of pain. Eating properly can drastically reduce the risk of heart disease. However, personal freedom is important so I am not in favor of laws and lectures telling me what and how to eat. Let’s work on one fault at a time please. Most of us want to feel good, be lighter, and have fewer issues with body function. We can at least care about ourselves for the sake of the people in our lives who love us. Here are a few simple tips for those of us who are lazy and need to at least act like we are trying. PARK AT A DISTANCE Parking backwards and getting the best parking space seem to be essential in the UAE. Here is my humble suggestion for the masses; park in the space furthest away from your destination. This solves the issue 16

ACCOUNTABILITY If you have made that resolution to get up and get into the gym…good luck. Do it with someone. Set up an accountability partner. This is someone who is willing to go with you, push you a little further, and when they find you napping on the couch instead of working out, they have the freedom to fuss at you for being lazy. Accountability with a friend has been helpful in several areas of my life.

of battling over a parking space. You can take as much time as you need to back into that space. Try and enjoy the extra steps you take to walk from your parking space and count it as your exercise for the day. TAKE THE STAIRS We enjoy the glide of escalators and elevators everywhere. My suggestion is to take the stairs. Stairs are great for the legs and a great form of lazy exercise. The stair master in the gym is not calling my name. If there are no stairs to be found, I discovered people actually walk up the escalator. FAMILY TIME Our kids are outside more than we are. My kids are always asking me to swim with them or even take them to the great parks of Al Ain. My wife likes to visit the mall so I’ll go and follow her around while herding the kids. I get my lazy exercise done and spend quality time yelling at my kids to stay with me. Who knew laziness could be so easy?

I would say that I care about you but I really don’t even know you. What I do know is that there are lazy people like me who struggle. I feel your pain. I am certain that my family would be devastated if they lost me. Your family would feel the same. Let’s give them a few more years to enjoy our charming personalities. Grab a friend off the couch and try some lazy exercise; you’ll live longer!

“Until Divorce Does Us Part”

T

he UAE has the highest divorce rate in the Gulf region and in fact, one of the highest on a global scale, with Dubai clocking in at a staggering 1,129 divorces in 2012 – in excess of 3 per day! As an expat, I would be guilty of immediately assuming that these figures reflect expat matrimonial interruptions, but this just isn’t the case. Emiratis, who comprise less than one fifth of the total population, account for one third of all divorces in this country.

Whatever happened working things out? By JJto Green It seems that today people are all too eager to throw in the towel on the” till death do us part” vows they made before friends, family and God. We looked at ten reasons cited in an article published in XPRESS last fall to help shed some light on this growing epidemic in paradise. 1. Infidelity: This seems to be the chart topper in the UAE and approximately one in five men are unfaithful to their partners and six percent of women have admitted to infidelity according to a YouGov Siraj survey.

2. Lack of communication: This is the ultimate kiss of death to a marriage on the rocks, and for that matter, a destroyer of any relationship, whether it is political or social. If you are experiencing marital difficulties then the importance of open communication cannot be stressed enough. Talk, talk and then talk some more; your marriage is worth it! 3. Unemployment: Since your very existence as an expat, in the UAE depends on your job visa, losing a job can place an incredible strain on working couples if the still employed partner does not wish to leave as a result of the others employment demise.

social & Community forum

Marriage is an amazing experience, but also a huge responsibility that requires dedication and work!

4. Religious and cultural differences: There are in excess of 200 nationalities living in this country and the result is often mixed marriages. When conflict enters the scene in these types of marriages, cultural and religious differences are often the catalysts leading to a split.

5. Lack of support system: Venturing to a foreign country without the support of family and friends is a life changing and challenging situation for any couple. Neither party can be expected to fulfill the roles of the entire support system in place in their native countries and when things get rocky in paradise, feelings of alienation can lead to depression and often a breakup. 6. Unrealistic expectations: Many couples relocate to the UAE with dreams of grandeur and once they arrive and settle in, the reality of the day in and day out situation is often very different from their expectations

of the “easy life”. These experiences are all too common in the UAE and often result in a drifting apart scenario as a result of shattered hopes and dreams. 7. Social networking addictions: An increasing number of couples are blaming social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter for the destruction of their marriages. As people become insatiably connected to these cyber affairs, their tangible relationships suffer neglect and ultimately demise. 8. Absence of intimacy: Long work hours and congested traffic commutes are common place in the UAE and often result in undue stress, depression and a lack of sex drive. According to sexologists, these conditions can cause a number of sexually related problems that result in deep divides in many relationships. 9. Financial stress: Financial woes can be huge stressors in a marriage for various reasons. An inequality in earnings can set things off as well as a difference in opinion regarding spending and allocation of funds. When either partner racks up debt, it can lead to tension and conflict that can potentially result in a break-up.

10. Issues with raising children: Children are considered the fruit of a marriage and are a huge commitment and responsibility. Many couples in the UAE are working couples and without any form of family support, the task of juggling both children and careers becomes a huge strain resulting in stressful existences that can easily end up in divorce court. Marriage is an amazing experience, but also a huge responsibility that requires dedication and work! The rate at which couples are throwing in the towel today is alarming and in some parts of the world has reached epidemic levels. We need to reevaluate what is meant by the vows we utter and appreciate the hard work and dedication that go along with any successful marriage and then sail into the rewards associated with “until death do us part.” The Source

Y

ou are about to go for your walk, run or swim, hit the gym or have just finished your exercise. What should you do before and after exercise to avoid injury? Warming up before exercise and cooling down after are essential. It adds a few more minutes but it is time well worth spending.

The key to warm ups and cool downs is to engage your activity at a slower pace and reduced intensity. Warming up prepares your body for aerobic exercise. Your heart and circulation allows more blood flow to your muscles. Your body temperature rises as it prepares for activity. Warm ups also reduce the sore muscles many people experience after exercise and cuts your risk of injury. Cooling down after your workout - especially a high intensity one - allows your heart rate, blood pressure and muscles to recover. This time can also prevent cramps and sudden muscle strains. HOW TO WARM UP Before you start your workout, focus on large muscle groups first such as those 20

• Walking - warm up by walking slowly for five to ten minutes. • Running – walk briskly for five to ten minutes.

your stomach in and back straight. Keep a slight bend in the supporting leg and maintain your balance. Shoulder rolls – combine these with marching on the spot. Roll your shoulders forwards and backwards a few times. Keep arms loose. STRETCHING EXERCISES

• Swimming – do so slowly at first and gradually increase your pace. HOW TO COOL DOWN Cooling down is the same as warming up but in reverse. You continue your exercise but at a slower and less intense pace. • Walking – cool down by walking slowly for five to ten minutes. • Running – walk briskly for five to ten minutes. • Swimming – do some leisure laps at a slow pace for five to ten minutes. BASIC EXERCISES Some basic exercises for your warm up routine could be: Marching on the spot – You can go forwards and backwards slightly. Move your arms up and down in rhythm with your steps, keeping elbows bent and hands loose. Knee lifts – stand tall and touch your alternate knees to the opposite hand. Keep

If you need these for a specific workout, do them after the warm up or cool down when your muscles are already warm. Stretching is a great way to improve your joint flexibility and increase your range of motion. Begin with gradual mobility exercises of all the joints; i.e. simply rotate the wrists, bend the arm and roll your shoulders. Don’t bounce but do hold the stretch till you feel the muscle relax. Breathe regularly. Start with your legs and work up your body so you won’t miss any groups. Whatever you decide; be kind to your body. Finding time for regular exercise, plus warming up and cooling down might not always be easy. Get creative to make the time rather than find the time. You could consider walking to your gym as a warm up and walking back as cool down. Properly done, these additions to your routine are low risk but of great benefit. Give your body time to adjust to the demands of your workout with well-planned warm ups and cool downs.

He has held a number of roles in the UAE military, from that of Officer in the Amiri Guard (the UAE's elite security force) and Pilot in the UAE Air Force, to his current role as Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

With his unique intellectual forum, His Highness continues to welcome a diverse selection of distinguished guests including scientists, intellectuals, experts, politicians and religious scholars from around the world to participate in productive and proactive debates. We always end our Al Majlis features by asking our people in focus to share a bit of wisdom with our readers, but in this particular case, we were not fortunate enough to be in the direct company of His Highness. There is no shortage of thought provoking quotes he has given the world and his people, and I would like to share one of my favorites with you; “The process of building man means, in the final analysis, building the nation and instilling the values of free, promising stable and secure life.” We could go on for a very long time The Source

family • Use post-its to remind your kids about the rules of internet usage, and stick them on the moniter as a warning sign. • Keep the Internet-connected computer in a common area of the house, never in a child's bedroom and sit with your child when they are online. This makes it more difficult for a predator to establish a relationship with your child. • Take an interest in your child’s online activities and know with whom they are communicating. • When your children are young, they should share the family email address rather than have their own email. • Tell your children to never respond to instant messaging or emails from strangers. If your children use computers in places outside your supervision like the public library, school, or friends' homes, find out what computer safeguards are used.

ntil now we have learned what cyber predating is and the signs of cyber predators. In the final chapter of this three part series, we go through the ways of protecting your kids from this increasing treat.

• Approve all photos and videos before your child posts them online. Make sure they do not reveal identifying information and are not sexually provocative or inappropriate.

Follow these simple steps to minimize the risk of your child becoming a victim.

• Follow age limits on social networking websites. Most social networking sites require that users be age 13 and above. Think of it this way; if your child does not meet the height requirement for a roller coaster would you let them endanger their lives? You will not. Age restrictions are there for a reason; follow them. As much as your children may peruse or emotionally blackmail you, do not let them use these sites if they do not meet the age requirement.

• Tell your child to NEVER meet face-to-face with anyone they first met online without your permission and/or attendance. • Teach your child not to reveal personal information or download images from an unknown source, they could be sexually explicit. • Teach them to refrain from talking about sex with anyone they meet online; and stop all communication if anyone starts asking questions that are too personal or sexually suggestive. 24

The Source

• Use family safety settings that are built into Windows 7, 8 and Vista as well as Mac iOS computers along with setting up email filters.

• Young children should not use chat rooms—the dangers are too great. As children get older, direct them towards wellmonitored kids' chat rooms. Encourage even your teens to use monitored chat rooms.

• Check your computer for pornographic files or any type of sexual communication— these are often warning signs • Talk to your kids about sexual predators and potential online dangers. Start a discussion with them and do not hesitate to ask questions, especially if your child is acting suspiciously. Inquire if someone online has asked to meet them in person, or if someone tried to be sexually inappropriate. Kids more often than not, get scared thinking that it's their mistake. Don’t get discouraged if they don’t respond immediately! • Encourage them to talk to you, if someone makes them feel uncomfortable, scared or unhappy. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS TARGETED? • If your child receives sexually explicit photos from an online correspondent, or they are solicited sexually by email, instant messaging, or some other way online, save the documentation including email addresses, website addresses, and chat logs to share with the police • If all precautions fail and your kids do meet an online predator, don't blame them. The offender always bears full responsibility. In either case report it to your local police.

cultures of the world

Let the party begin!

O By K.Radhakishan

n April 23rd 2014, the city of Seville in Spain will immerse itself in a week of nonstop merriment. If you are Spanish you know what we are talking about; for everyone else welcome to La Feria de Abril.

La Feria de Abril in Seville began around 1847 and was originally a livestock fair. Over the years, La Feria quickly became an annual occurrence and as time rolled on, the traditions and culture of Seville blended it into one of the most popular festivals worldwide. La Feria is located at the end of Calle Asunción in Los Remedios. This annual fair of Seville generally begins two weeks after Semana Santa (Holy Week) and is always the first fair of spring in Spain. The feria opens on a Monday night with the ceremonial lighting-up of the fairgrounds, which is the starting gun for six nights of Sevillanos’ favourite activities: eating, drinking, talking, dressing up and dancing till dawn. Each year, a new elaborate entrance is constructed for the fair. These vary in style depending on the year, and are 50ft in height or taller. The entrance is considered to be very symbolic of La Feria. The fiesta is relentless the entire week, continuing throughout the night and into the next day. There is no end to one day nor is there a beginning to the next. The dancing of Sevillanas continues until their feet cannot take any more, and when someone leaves for a short siesta, another arrives to take their place. Casetas (temporary tents) line the outskirts and create winding rows through the middle of the fair grounds. Inside the casetas, sit families and friends sharing dances, rebujitos (traditional Spanish drink) and tapas. Most casetas are private affairs erected by clubs, associations, families and 28

groups of friends. These private parties are the essence of the Feria de Abril and you have to be invited by the family who put up the tent. However, there are also around 15 free public casetas abundant with similar entertainment. One of the more popular of these is Er 77, where wine is drawn from a well and poured into buckets. Many tents have beds in the back for resting. Inside the casetas, it’s all about conversation, Sevillianas (the local form of flamenco dancing) and ever flowing Manzanilla (dry sherry). Girls wear colourful and frilly traje de flamenca (flamenco dress), a mantilla (hair comb), the mantón (shawl), and flutter the traditional ventilador (fan). The men ride horses, or horse drawn buggies, sporting trajes córtos (short jackets, really tight trousers and boots) and cordobés (hats). In the afternoons, from about 1pm, those who have horses and carriages parade about the city. Long strands of brightly coloured, circular

lights called ferrocarrillos line the street’s and intensify the party spirit of the casetas. If you need a break from the casetas, you can wander next door to Calle del Infierno (Hell St), a fairground of rides, games, bars and restaurants. You can also head for the bullfights that are in full season during the feria. There are fights daily in Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza during the festival. There is still time to hop on a plane and party like a Spaniard if you are able and if you do, be sure to let us know all about your adventure!

One thing we already know about Alain from one of our previous city reviews is that there is a thriving textile market here. This not only attracts customers from all over Al Ain and the neighbouring villages, but also from the city across the border. So it's only logical to conclude that where there is cloth, there will be needles and thread to sew it. In this week’s issue we bring to you the tailoring markets of Al Ain. With the expansion of malls and factory line production, one would think that the demand for tailors would have been reduced over the years. While that may hold true for many places around the world, Al Ain is a unique exception. Come Eid and wedding season, these tailors are swamped with work and will tell you to come back in two months. They don't work on an appointment basis, rather a first come first serve. They specialise in making Jalabiya (a type of gown that is worn under the Abaya). Jalabiyas can be simple or absolutely extravagant. From hand crafted embroidery to customised sequences, net, lace or tassels, these tailors will transform a simple piece of fabric into a work of art. You can clearly mistake some of the Jalabiyas for evening gowns due to the intricate detailing. Some of the most famous tailoring places in Al Ain are located in the Somali and Muaji markets, as well as the Munaseer market and Baldiya market in Zakher, which operate throughout the year. Zakher district is filled with mini clusters of tailoring shops, situated along the main road stretch. Their bright lights are a beacon, attracting people from all around. Once in a store, you won’t be able to resist the urge to get one stitched for yourself. The price for stitching a simple gown starts at around AED 100. Since most people in this profession are males and don’t take measurements, it is advisable to carry an existing garment in your size. They hail from different countries, can communicate in various languages and are open to negotiations on the price. Like I said before, don’t wait until they are too busy to serve you; get down to a shop in one of these unique markets and get into some dapper custom tailored threads!

Lack of work in Bollywood pushs the begum of Pataudi to take an alternate job

Kareena Kapoor Khan is all set to take up a new profession and buzz is that it is all because of her lack of assignments from Bollywood. The once considered queen of B-Town hardly has any assignments under her belt these days and thus has decided to turn to a different profession, redesigning and restoring the Pataudi palace along with her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore. They plan up to refurnish the 10-bedroom Pataudi palace to their taste. A source said, “Kareena is quite enthusiastic about working to restore the Pataudi palace to its former glory and both Kareena and Sharmila are taking a keen interest in the project.”

The actress said she was surprised to see the veteran actor’s passion towards his work. “After working for so many years, his enthusiasm towards work hasn’t changed. I admire him. He and Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) are excited about their work and you can see the passion in their eyes,” she said to a news source in India. ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ is a hi-tech 3D film with photorealistic motion capture technology, also called as performance capturing technology. It has been used in Hollywood films like ‘Avatar’ and ‘The Adventures of Tintin’.

Avatar sequels go into production Avatar’ director James Cameron has revealed that the sequels to the 2009 film will be made simultaneously. “The second, third and fourth films all go into production simultaneously. They’re essentially all in pre-production now, because we are designing creatures, settings, and characters that span all three films. And we should be finished with all three scripts within the next, I would say, six weeks,” he said. Cameron said that the sequels are slated to release from December 2016 to 2018.

GEORGIA ON MY MIND By Pia Han Lindberg

G

Our guest writer takes a tour through the striking landscapes of Georgia, an emerging and increasingly popular tourist destination within easy reach of the UAE eorgia has, in my mind, always been a mysterious country. Located in the beautiful Caucasus, at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, it’s a land that possesses its own unique language and culture. Just a couple of hours’ flying time from the UAE with flydubai, Georgia is also the perfect destination for a long weekend.

services. On the other side of the bath is a beautiful mosque, built in 1895.

Excursion to Bodbe, Sighnaghi and Tsinandali I’ve always wanted to see the Georgian countryside, so we arranged a day trip together with a guide and a driver and headed out to the eastern part of Georgia. The landscape shifted from mountains to wide-open fields, with the snow-covered, mighty Caucasus mountains in the background.

Tbilisi is the capital and the outskirts are reminiscent of any post-Soviet city, with shoebox-like apartment buildings in various grey colours. But as you near the city centre, the scenery changes to small cozy streets and old houses with beautiful architecture and traditional-style balconies, offering a fantastic blend of Europe and Asia.

After a short while, we stopped at a small house to watch how the traditional Georgian bread Tonispuri is made. The bread is prepared on a round, cylinder-shaped oven called a Toni with coal in the bottom, and the bread is cooked by attaching the dough to the sides of the oven. The fresh-baked bread, still warm from the oven, tasted delicious.

The old town is definitely worth a visit with its cobble stone streets, various souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. The ruins of the Narikala castle offer a stunning view over the city and are accessible by cable car. When walking across the Metekhi bridge, you will find the Abantoubani, which literally means the bath district. The sulfur bath is open to the public and provides various

After this much-appreciated stop, we drove towards the old monastery of Bodbe, where the remains of St Nino, the 4th-century female evangelist of Georgians, are buried. Our tour then continued to Sighnaghi, the city of love – a very picturesque city with narrow streets located on top of a hill. One of the smallest cities in Georgia, with only 2,146 inhabitants, it’s surrounded by a wall

similar to the Great Wall of China, and the view, over the valley where the ancient Silk Road once passed through, is breathtaking. Our final stop was Tsinandali and the summer mansion of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, a poet, public benefactor and military figure who was born in St Petersburg to Georgian parents (his father was the ambassador in St Petersburg). The house still displays many original pieces of furniture and paintings from Chavchavadze’s era and our guide explained the history behind each room in great detail. After a walk in the large garden surrounding the mansion, we returned to our van and headed back to Tbilisi.

Mtskheta Mtskheta is the name of the old capital of Georgia, located outside of Tbilisi. Easy to reach by taxi, it takes about half an hour to get there. We strolled around the town, admiring the small houses with their beautifully carved wooden balconies. Mtskheta is famous for the old Patriarchal Temple of Svetitskhoveli, a Georgian Christian religious centre and a symbol of the nation’s spiritual unity. The old church has been a target for invaders several times and rebuilt just as many.

Khinkali Georgian food There are plenty of restaurants, both international and Georgian, but I would recommend the local cuisine, which is influenced by Arabic, Turkish, Russian and Persian food. One of the most famous dishes is the khinkali – large dumplings filled with meat, vegetables, cheese or potatoes, and served with a tangy sauce to dip them in. Don’t leave without trying a Georgian stew either. Rich and tasty, with plenty of vegetables and meat, stews are served with freshly made Georgian bread. One thing for sure is you’ll never go hungry in Georgia.

The Rich father and his son

‫الفأر و حبات القمح‬

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the purpose of showing his son how the poor people live so he could be thankful for his wealth. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?” “It was great, Dad.” “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh yeah” said the son. “So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.” “We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.” “Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.” “We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.” “We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.” “We buy our food, but they grow theirs.” “We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.”

With this the boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “Thanks dad for showing me how poor we are.” Moral of the story: True wealth cannot be measured in money, it lies in happiness.
