try to make a habit of not getting political in my opening letters; however, the situation in many of the surrounding Middle Eastern countries makes it almost impossible to steer clear of expressing pent up thoughts and emotions. But, opinions without solutions are not often a sound policy as there are far too many opinions to count, and this is not a forum for literary battle. What I can do is dedicate some passionate lyrics from a song I wrote years ago, to a very special lady whose family is currently being victimized by the ravages of war. She is not alone in her struggle for comprehension of the great injustices suffered by so many innocent human beings that want nothing more than to live their lives peacefully and with dignity. With an extremely heavy heart and an endless prayer, I dedicate this to you and your family D…

Teardrops In The Rain I wish that I could wave my hand and make a tree appear Or softly sing a melody that puts to rest all fear I want so much to harmonize, but I just can’t find the key There has to be an answer, oh Lord please help me see The fields of love lay fallow Melancholy whispers in the breeze And every helpless creature bears fruit to new disease The teardrops flow like rivers; has it all become insane? The angry clouds remind me that the teardrops are in vain Teardrops, silly teardrops; teardrops in the rain needn’t bother fall

Teardrops, save those teardrops, ‘cause Mother Nature is crying for us all…

May the remainder of this Holy Month of Ramadan shed light on the many dark corners of our planet, and let this radiance dry the turbulent rivers of tears that have fallen in vain. AMEN!

ASK THE DR. "If I blow my nose too hard, my right nostril suffers from a nose bleed. This problem has been going on for about five to seven months now. I've also noticed that when I'm angry, there tends to be a lot more blood. First I thought it was nothing more than just a regular nose bleed, but now I'm starting to get worried. What could be causing this?" Dear Reader, Bleeding from the nostril is very common, especially in hot dry weather. In your case, I advise seeing a doctor so that they can look in your nose to confirm the cause. Often just using a saline nasal spray will help prevent the nose from bleeding. Be well, Dr. Gabe

Man Sues British Airways After He's Sent To Grenada Instead Of Granada What a difference an "a" makes.

A Maryland dentist, who said he hadn't had a vacation in two years, is suing British Airways after a booking mistake landed him in Grenada in the Caribbean instead of Granada, Spain, according to NBC News. Edward Gamson said he told the British Airways booker he wanted to go to Spain and didn't notice the error on his ticket because it didn't have an airport code or the flight duration printed on it. He only learned that he was headed to the tiny island nation after his connecting flight in London was in the air and the flight map showed his plane flying west. Gamson said he wasted 375,000 frequent flyer miles for the trip and was only offered $376 for him and his partner and 50,000 miles for their trouble.

Al-Youm – Today, Ghadan – Tomorrow, Ams – Yesterday. These must learn words will help you in a number of ways. Learn them today or should we say Al – Youm!

He is now suing the airline for $34,000 to cover the cost of "pre-booked hotels, trains and other tours" he and his partner had planned, according to NBC. British Airways declined according to CNN.

TIPS TO GO GREEN It is estimated that up to 6,000 tons of sunscreen is released annually by tourists in reef areas, and because sunscreens are often petroleum based, they don’t biodegrade When chemicals in sunscreen come in contact with reefs, the coral becomes stressed, pushing out the algae living inside and leaving behind a vulnerable skeletal structure. As coral reefs lose their biological inhabitants due to toxins, pollution and increased temperatures due to global warming, they also lose their pigments, becoming “bleached. Protect the coral reefs by using sunscreens that are free of petrochemical active ingredients and nanoparticles.

Emirates Motor Company (EMC), General Distributors of Mercedes-Benz in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the flagship company of Al Fahim Group, launched the all-new Mercedes-Benz 2015 C-Class in a gala iftar and a superb unveiling of the fabulous new innovative car on Saturday, 5 July at their close-to-heart Airport Road Showroom in Abu Dhabi. In the presence of newly appointed CEO Automotive of Al Fahim Group, Mr. Frank Bernthaler, the celebrative evening continued with a press conference where EMC hosts Mr. Kamal Rafih, General Manager, Mr. Jordan Duckett, General Sales Manager, and Mr. Rabih Eid, Operations Manager, were head-table spokespersons. “We are delighted to be revealing the admirable all-new Mercedes-Benz 2015 C-Class during a blessed, festive month and announce the great achievements we’ve accomplished so far this year,” praised Mr. Rafih in his speech to the media. “As we conclude the first half of the year, we also celebrate a well-earned increase in our sales performance of 42% compared to the same period last year.”

High-class interior with fine details The innovative touchpad developed by Mercedes-Benz in the hand-rest marks a further evolutionary step. As on a smartphone, this provides for simple and intuitive operation of all the headunit functions using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting - in any language supported by Audio 20. One of the main highlights of the innovative touchpad is that Arabic letters, numbers and even special characters are supported, and can be entered into the handwriting recognition function. Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive: the intelligent car The new C-Class incorporates almost all of the new assistance systems with a host of enhanced functions which celebrated their world premiere in the S-Class and E-Class only some months ago. The assistance systems enhance both comfort and safety. Mercedes-Benz calls this Intelligent Drive.

The new C-Class offers numerous innovative safety and assistance systems. It is equipped as standard with ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and fatigue. In addition to Adaptive Brake Assist, which offers protection from collisions from speeds as low as 7 km/h, standardfit COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS also features an additional function: when the risk of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 200 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h. Other safety features include: • DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and integrated Stop&Go Pilot • BAS PLUS Brake Assist and PRE-SAFE® Brake • Enhanced Active Lane Keeping Assist • Active Parking Assist • Traffic Sign Assist • Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus

urban woman

TELL

believe an urban woman should be well read. To practice what I preach I try to get a lot of reading done throughout my day. Though to be honest, I don’t get the time to read a lot of books, but I do read articles and stories from trustworthy sources including scientific journals on the internet. A few days ago I came across a study published last year which said, a man cannot read emotions through a woman’s eyes, but can do just that when looking into the eyes of other men. The study suggested that they understood what other men felt by remembering similar moments in their own lives, and then used these to evaluate the images of eyes shown to them during the research. I speak from experience when I say women are more emotional. I believe this is a good thing, because this passion helps bring peace and happiness to the world. Men on the other hand are considered emotionless, which again, speaking from experience is not true; but what is true is that men cannot understand a woman's emotions. And still many of my friends expect their partners to simply understand what's going on in their heads without saying a word. Ladies, as much as we would like them to be, men are not magicians or mind readers. I’m not defending them, rather helping to avoid disappointment in future situations.

Dropping hints here and there can be fun but proves frustrating to your partner. It is a teenage approach that will not achieve results. We are woman! And even though it’s good to be a girl sometimes, women should display more substance and charisma. We have come a long way from our teenage years, where anything and everything could have upset us. Speaking your mind is much more important than keeping things suppressed because what is suppressed will one day erupt in the worst possible way.

they be? Women of today are not just more confident, we are also street smart. So why not apply all this when it comes to communicating?

And it’s not just your partner; you shouldn’t be doing that to anyone. Why should your loved ones have to go through the pain of trying to understand what is going on in your mind? Isn’t it easier to just say it? I have a ton of girlfriends who find themselves in turmoil when it comes to sharing their feelings. Maybe they are embarrassed or scared of being judged, but why should

I’ve rambled on enough but will leave you with this important advice: don’t keep quiet, open communication is healing and your partner will be happy with the validation.

It can be really frustrating when you know someone has something on their mind but for whatever reason, refuses to disclose. Keeping your issues bottled up will never lead to a solution and can only cause added unnecessary pain and confusion for your partner!

And besides, what really prevents you from sharing your thoughts and feelings? Think about it!

FAST

U

nder the disguise of health or environment, these days, there are people all over the world who love to manage the lives of others. It’s ok for the wife or a close friend to nag us over too much drinking, smoking, or over eating, but when the entire world is noticing our short comings, it’s time to

effect change.

There are habitual things we do that we don’t even think about and many of them, good or bad, are simply an unnecessary form of self gratification because they seem fun. I approached my friend who isn’t a Muslim and asked him what he was going to do during Ramadan. To my surprise he said fasting. Fasting for him was temporarily putting away habits in order to reflect on things more important than himself. Many fast to build a greater connection with their Creator. I do believe Allah wants us to enjoy life but there are plenty of people who do not believe and may ask, what difference it would make to fast? Whether or not we like to hear it men, we all have a few areas of life that need improvement. Whether you are fasting or not this Ramadan, here are a few things to think about. GOALS Set aside time dedicated to achieving some goals in life. What do you want to accomplish now or in 5 years? Where do

16

The Source

you want to travel or what do you want to overcome? Goals give you purpose. Everyone has a purpose and we should discover what that is. Hint: It’s not always about us. Fasting gives you a unique sense of accomplishment. Can I do this every day? Can I quit this habit for a period of time? TRAIN Ever try to quit smoking? For most, it requires time and practice. Think of fasting as an everyday challenge. We need time and people to challenge us to overcome or change habits. Before putting goals into action, think about how to get it done. Write down your goals and what it will take to accomplish them. Keep this plan of action where you can always see it. Get rid of whatever keeps you from accomplishing your goal. ACTION Goals without action are worthless. A wise guy once said, “It’s like staring at yourself in the mirror and forgetting what you looked like as soon as you leave.” Once you have written down your goals and what it will take to accomplish them; put the plan into action. Do something! REVIEW Whether your goal was accomplished in a day, month, or even if it takes a few years, at some point it will be time to evaluate. Reflect on what you’ve accomplished. Always improve yourself. Like a productive business, take a look at what worked and what didn’t work and create a new plan of action.

Fasting may not always be fun but it’s a good way to start a personal challenge. If you don’t want to fast you can still be productive on this planet and try to use the Goal-Train-Action-Review as a guide, but why not challenge yourself to a test of self discipline this year and fast – you’ll feel good about yourself and the accomplishment!

A WAR THAT HEALS Fight for a drug free world

Around 200 million people take drugs at least once a year. Of these, 25 million are regarded as drug dependent. Every year 200,000 people die from drug-related illnesses. Young people are more susceptible to drug use. Prevalence of drug use among young people is more than twice as high as drug use among the general population; three times as high in the case of cannabis. These figures are unacceptable and much more needs to be done to provide young people with the skills, information and opportunities to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

social & community forum The NRC has been at Marina Mall Abu Dhabi and Dalma Mall for an entire week and the stands have been frequented by several hundred people. The free ‘clinic’ operated by experts from the NRC saw several youth inquire about the services NRC offers, and the doctor-patient confidentiality. Taking inspiration from what was being said about drugs and the effects on one’s health, two female Zayed University students created a mini-film on drug abuse and its effect on the brain. The NRC decided to show the film at the stand and it was widely and well received. ABOUT THE NRC The National Rehabilitation Center ‘NRC’ was established upon the insightful directives of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 2002 to serve and provide a glimpse of hope for all drug addicts.

Young people often talk about the "highs" induced by illicit drugs but may not be aware of the many "lows". Illicit drug use is a concern because it poses a threat to health. Leading a healthy lifestyle requires making choices that are respectful of body and mind. To make healthy choices, people particularly the young, need guidance from role models and need to get the right facts about drug use. The international ‘World Drug Day’ campaign provides young people and others with tools to inform themselves about the health risks associated with illicit drug use.

his/her health. We’ve spent the last week reaching out to mall goers to talk to them about the dangers of drugs abuse, but to also reassure them that help is available,” commented Dr Ali Hassan Al Marzooqi, Director of Public Health and Research at the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC). “We want to inform people that if they or their loved ones are suffering, there’s help – it’s comprehensive and anonymous. We’re asking people to help us reduce/prevent addiction within the community, and World Drug Day is the perfect chance for us to do so,” he added.

The NRC endeavors to develop its services to better cater to the community needs following the latest scientific methods of drug addiction treatment. It also increased its capacity to accommodate the increasing referrals following the Khalifa Medical City launch. Moreover, it opened two new units for adult and female addicts. In a few years, the NRC has been able to establish partnerships with medically and scientifically renowned local and international organizations including the US Maclean University Hospital, UAE University, UK King’s University, UN Office on Drug & Crime and the World Health Organization ‘WHO’. People seeking help or looking for more information can call the NRC’s hotline on 800 2252.

Here in the UAE, the National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) has taken over major malls in Abu Dhabi to spread its message in the week leading up to World Drug Day – which was officially marked on June 26, 2014. The NRC has reported that it has received many inquiries from mall visitors related to the center’s role in treating and rehabilitating patients and how they help reintegrate them back into the community. By providing interactive stands in the malls, the NRC was able to communicate with youth - a major target group the NRC focuses on. The mall goers’ inquiries were centered around many topics including how to contact the center, patient confidentiality, and the various types of drugs and their impact on users. Many asked for advice on how to get people to visit the center and ask for help if needed. “Drugs affect a person’s family relationships, status and most importantly, The Source

Heat stroke

T

he Middle East faces extreme temperatures during the summer. This increases the risk of medical emergencies such as heatstroke, also known as sunstroke.

Heat stroke is the result of exposure to high temperatures and usually goes along with dehydration. When the body’s temperature control system cannot cope it progresses to heat-related illnesses like heat cramps, fainting and heat exhaustion. But it can also come if there have been no previous signs of heat injury and affects more people than is commonly known. When the body temperature exceeds 105 degrees Fahrenheit, with complications involving the nervous system – this is heatstroke. The affected person can feel nausea, confusion, be disoriented and even lose consciousness. Fainting is often the first sign of heat stroke.

OTHER SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR: • Throbbing headache • Dizziness • Less sweating • Red, hot and dry skin • Muscle cramps • Rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak • Rapid, shallow breathing • Behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation, or staggering • Seizures • Unconsciousness TYPES OF HEATSTROKE: Non-exertion heatstroke: Being exposed to a hot environment causes this. It involves a considerable increase in body temperature without strenuous physical activity. This type of heatstroke typically occurs with exposure to hot, humid weather for prolonged 20

Exertional heatstroke: this is due to physical activity in hot weather. Anyone exercising or working in hot weather can suffer from exertional heatstroke, but it's most likely to occur if you're not accustomed to high temperatures.

Fans may make you feel better, but in sustained hot weather, air conditioning is the most effective way to cool down and lower humidity.

In either type of heatstroke, your condition can be accelerated by wearing excess clothing that traps sweat and doesn’t allow your body to cool. Dehydration also adds to the problem if lost fluids are not replenished. PEOPLE AT RISK Anyone can get heatstroke but some people are at higher risk. Young or old: your central nervous system copes with extreme heat and in both age extremes it is vulnerable. Both age groups usually have difficulty remaining hydrated, thereby increasing the risk. Situations that require exertion include training and participation in school sports. If you are not used to high temperatures or high humidity, you are at a much higher risk. Limit your physical activity for several days until you've

Your risk of suffering heatstroke increases if you have certain chronic illnesses, such as heart or lung disease. TREATMENT The best treatment is to immediately go to the hospital. There are other things that can be done in the meanwhile. The person should be moved to an air-conditioned environment -- or at least a cool, shady area -- and stripped of any unnecessary clothing. Fan air over the patient, while wetting his or her skin with water from a sponge or garden hose. Apply ice packs especially to the patient's armpits, groin, neck, and back. These areas are rich with blood vessels close to the skin and cooling them will reduce body temperature. After you've recovered from heat stroke, you'll probably be more sensitive to high temperatures for a period of time, so it's best to avoid hot weather and heavy exercise until your doctor tells you that it's safe to resume your normal activities.

This week we speak to a man who has made quite an impact since emerging onto the educational landscape of Al Ain ten months ago. Mr. Alun Yorath, Head Master of Brighton College Al Ain, recently hit the headlines after the school received the highest inspection grade of any new school in the history of the Abu Dhabi Emirate, and the best ever awarded to an Al Ain school.

You must be riding high after the success of Brighton College this year? I am certainly content with the year that we have had. To receive the highest ever inspection grade for an Al Ain school was a significant first step but I can assure you that nobody at Brighton College is getting carried away. My staff and I came here with the ambition of creating the finest school in the Gulf and will continue to work flat out towards that goal. Our wonderful pupils deserve the very best. What were your initial impressions of Al Ain when you arrived last year? What a place! It was clear straight away that this is a beautiful city and its people are warm and hospitable. Al Ain is not just the cultural heartland of the United Arab Emirates. It is also the perfect place in which to bring up a young family, and my wife and three children are very happy to be living in such a tranquil environment. We can often be found at the zoo or enjoying the thrills and spills of a day out at Hili Fun City. The combination of personal contentedness and professional challenge means that I am here for the long haul! Tell us about your background in education… I have been very fortunate over the course of my career, working in the UK at Magdalen College School, Oxford and St. Paul’s Girls’ School in London. These are widely regarded as the number

one boys’ and girls’ schools in Britain so I had a terrific apprenticeship. As I have travelled the world, it has become abundantly clear to me that British independent education is regarded by parents as the finest on offer in the world. I am humbled to be leading a school that has now brought the values, ethos and ambition of such education to Al Ain. What advice can you give to parents who are looking at schools in Al Ain? It is vitally important that parents make sure that they tour each school thoroughly and ask to watch the pupils in action. There are many schools across the world that claim to be both ‘British’ and ‘independent’ but lack the academic rigour and extra-curricular opportunities that you would expect from such schools. First and foremost, the quality of the teaching staff will determine the extent to which a child will progress. I would urge parents to check the credentials of these teachers ahead of making a final decision. What sort of impact has the historic ADEC inspection grading had on Brighton College? It is always flattering to receive accolades but accelerating the progress of the children here remains of paramount importance to us and that will never change. The main difference has been felt by our Admissions staff, who have been besieged by calls from parents since news of the inspection report came to light. Their holidays will be well earned!

ummer holidays are a great time to start a summer project. So why not pick one that is fun for the whole family and will keep the kids busy for days. Family trees are a fun way to bring the whole family together and teach the kids about the importance of Genealogy. It demands the same kind of persistence and deductive reasoning that detectives use to solve mysteries. Still not convinced as to why making a long family tree is a good idea? Then read on to know the benefits. Genealogy has both an emotional and practical Side Validate Family Stories – To determine whether or not ancestral stories are true. Famous People – To discover if there are relations to anyone famous. Historical Event – To gain a better understanding of an ancestor’s involvement in a famous historical event. Trace Medical Conditions –To assess the risk of certain medical conditions that run in families. Trace a Family Inheritance –To determine genealogical proof of a family connection for potential heirs. Trace Land Ownership - To settle questions of land ownership by providing proof of descent. Trace a Family Portrait - To see why someone bears a strong resemblance to an ancestor in an old family portrait. 24

who you are

Community History – To document a community history by understanding the families that founded and influenced the community. Historic Studies – To provide insight into history through the scholarly study of a famous family, such as a royal family. Preserve a Close Relative's Legacy - To learn more about a parent, grandparent or sibling after their death. Preserving Family Traditions – To preserve knowledge of ancestors who contributed to family traditions, such as a family recipe book. Preserve Family Culture – To allow families that have migrated to another country the opportunity to preserve some of the culture of their old country.

Understand Family Letters/Diaries - To gain context via an intimate glimpse into an ancestor's experiences and feelings. Understand a Namesake - To learn more about the person you were named after. Settle Ownership of an Heirloom - To help resolve disputes over the origin of a family heirloom. Reconnect with Family – To find and reconnect with living relatives your parents may have lost touch with. Family Legacy – To fulfil a desire to pass on a legacy to future generations. Ever wondered why you are the way you are, why you feel connected to certain things or places? The answers can be found by looking into the philosophical aspect of your genealogy. Genealogy can provide a doorway to questions like, where do I come from? (The past), why am I here? (The present), what is going to happen to me? (The future), you just have to dig deeper to find the answers. Here’s how to get started on your own family tree: Bring out the arts and craft supplies and make a family scrap book, which can be the perfect coffee table book, but be sure to leave enough pages for the yet to be born. Or go digital, especially if your family is spread across the globe. Websites like FamilySearch.org, Ancestry. com and worldgenweb.org can offer great insights and tools to build and trace your genealogy. Go discover yourself and enjoy the exciting journey with the entire family!

entertainment Salman and SRK Hug again!

It felt like a déjà vu – same venue, same iftar party and the two warring Khans – Shah Rukh and Salman. Former friends turned-foe-turned friends again hugged each other yet again at an iftar party hosted by Baba Siddiqui at a five star hotel in Mumbai on July 6th. The two had last hugged each other at the same venue on July 21 last year; the only difference was, the change of clothes. Last year’s hug had ended their five years of rivalry, though they have not been seen at public events. On the other hand SRK’s wife Gauri was spotted partying with Salman and his family at the Diwali bash last year. Though Salman Khan said on Koffee With Karan that SRK and he can never be ‘best of friends now’, we still hope the close friends come together again like a happy Bollywood movie ending.

Jugal Hansraj gets married in the USA The cute child actor of the 1980s classic Masoom with the famous song ‘lakdi ki kati’ who couldn’t find much success as a lead actor or director, recently tied the knot with his partner Jasmine in a very private ceremony in the USA. The 42-year-old Mohabbatein actor's friend Uday Chopra tweeted "My friend Jugal Hansraj just got married yesterday in Oakland, Michigan to Jasmine... Wish the couple a very happy married life," to congratulate the newly-weds.

Trailer of the muchawaited film Haider has mixed reactions. Haider, which is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid Kapoor’s second movie together. The film also stars Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Irrfan Khan and Kay Kay Menon. Since Sasha and Bhardwaj’s last film together, Kaminey managed to impress the critics, expectations are high from Haider. The first trailer of the film is good in bits and pieces. In the video, you see Shahid in various avatars which is intriguing. But at the same time, the he is dancing with his face painted. It’s puzzling since Haider is supposed to be a serious film. Maybe it will all make sense when it releases - will have to wait and watch.

Zac Efron caught kissing Michelle Rodriguez on vacation Zac 26, and Michelle, 35, were spotted on a yacht on July 5 packing on the PDA, and totally looking like a couple. Sources say they were cuddling, holding hands, and joking around lovingly and having an incredible, relaxing day out on the Italian water; which turned out to be the perfect setting for them to confirm the rumours that they’re dating. Lounging on the deck, Zac was caught leaning in and passionately kissing Michelle. Michelle was just as open with her relationship with model Cara Delevingn. A picture of her kissing the topless model

in the ocean in Cancun, Mexico on March 28 set the internet on fire. But after seeming inseparable, they have not been spotted together in a long time, maybe their romance has fizzled out.

Mila Kunis "never wanted to get married" until she met Ashton Kutcher In W's August 2014 issue, Kunis speaks candidly about how their friendship turned into a romance after co-starring on the Fox comedy That '70s Show from 1998-2006. Though Kutcher has been married before, Kunis is excited to wed for the first time. "I never wanted to get married. From the age of 12, I prepared my parents for no marriage," the pregnant movie star says. She adds, "Then things changed—I found the love of my life. Now my theory on weddings is: Don't invite anyone. Do it privately and secretly. My parents are okay with that. They're just excited that I said yes." The Source

Now that my children are getting older, I’m able to look back with a smile at some of the travel tales I’ve acquired while taking my kids back and forth to see family By Marianne Makdisi

my world MISSING PASSENGER: As soon as you have more than one child, losing one of them on board becomes a risk. I lost my eldest when boarding a flight several years ago. While getting on, I’d been so distracted with his little brother and getting our bags stowed that I failed to notice he’d legged it up the other end of the plane – until they put an announcement out.

A

s I write this column, I’m getting mentally prepared for our annual summer leave, to the US and UK to reintroduce our children to their family, grassy fields and Wellington boots.

I discovered a while ago that the A380 is the best plane to fly on if you’re taking a long-haul trip with your overactive offspring – not just because there’s more space to move around, but because there’s even a staircase you could use as a naughty step. Of course, as any mother will know, there are other things that would also help – like a third arm to carry all the luggage; the physical stamina of a pack mule; and double-jointedness to make assisting a child in the bathroom easier. A basic aviation knowledge – so as to answer questions like How does the wind move? – would also be supremely useful.

AIR RAGE: Flying from the US to London, my eldest son, aged two at the time, threw the most terrible tantrum because he wanted the stroller to come up the aisle with us. He then tantrumed about putting his seat belt on and I feared they’d halt the take-off. At the end of the flight, the 45-minute wait on the ground while the plane waited for a gate unleashed one last round of toddler fury that led to a stampede-like clamour to get off. BORED BOYS: On every flight I took my boys on when they were little, they’d race through my carefully packed bag of tricks in no time at all. Games, toys and books I’d spent months collecting were dispensed with in minutes. So they’d start seeking fun in mischievous ways: Tray up/tray down. Light on/light off. Window shutter open/ shutter closed. Call the flight attendant. Call the flight attendant again. When all the undinging I had to do got too much, we’d go for a walk, go to the toilet, check the flight map to see exactly how many hours and minutes were left, then check it again half a minute later.

VANDALISM ON BOARD: While I was in the bathroom, my children once covered the TV screen with stickers. Bad idea – an annoyed flight attendant told me the heat from the screen can turn the adhesive on the stickers into industrial-strength superglue. Imagining the entire aircraft being decommissioned while engineers scraped Lightening McQueen and his friends off 35F’s TV, I started peeling and didn’t stop until there wasn’t a single trace of sticker left. A happy coincidence was it used up a good 20 minutes of flight time. WEIRD THINGS: I swear this happened, though my husband says it’s impossible. On a trip to the bathroom with my youngest son, I pushed the flush button and the ‘whoooosh’ was so powerful, it even sucked up a tissue on the floor. My startled son thought he was going in too. There’s a chance I was just hallucinating (it was a long flight), but whatever happened, he’s now terrified of the flusher. I now realise that the single most important thing that makes a big difference is your children getting older, and easier, to fly with. While queuing at security last summer, I got chatting to a mum with a seven-monthold infant, and as she struggled with all the baby paraphernalia, juggled her little one, took her belt and shoes off, then, at the other side of the x-ray machine, pulled it all together again like a 100-piece jigsaw puzzle, I have to admit I felt like punching the air with joy that I’ve left that stage well and truly behind.

In my role as an expat wife living thousands of miles from family, I’ve clocked up not only many, many air miles, but also countless stories about travelling solo with little ones who can’t go in the hold (I’ve checked). I’ve always maintained that flying with very small babies is the easiest – when I travelled from Minneapolis to London with my threemonth-old son, he was essentially hand luggage and slept nearly the entire flight in the basinet. Kids aged four plus can be plugged into the TV or given an iPad. But there’s definitely a murky zone in between, when diversionary tactics are all that stand between you and a mile-high meltdown. Real Solutions to Problems The management of a company decided to teach their 30 employees about finding real solutions to problems. The team was called to play a game in a banquet hall. The group was quite surprised when they entered the hall. They found that the hall was decorated with colourful balloons like a kids play area, with a huge box of balloons placed in the centre. The team leader asked everyone to pick a balloon from the box and blow it. Then he asked them to write their names on it carefully so that the balloons don’t burst, but not everyone was successful so they were given another chance. Those who failed the second chance were out of the game. 25 employees qualified for the next level. All the balloons were now collected and scattered around another a room. The team leader asked everyone to go to the room and pick up the balloon that had their name on it. He also warned them that no balloon should burst! The 25 employees started searching for their respective balloons. 15 minutes later, no one was able to find the balloon carrying their name and round two came to an end. In third round the employees were asked to pick up any balloon in the room and give it to the person whose name was on it. Within a couple of minutes all balloons reached their respective owners. The team leader then announced the point of this game which was called real solutions to problems. At first everyone was frantically hunting for solutions without understanding the ideal way of solving the problem. But with team work, sharing and helping each other the team was able to achieve its goal. Moral of the story: Help each other out to ease things because that is how a team works.
