sn’t technology an amazing thing! Here I am across the globe in Canada and still able to keep in touch with my favourite publication. Before I go any further, I want to thank the entire Source Team for their hard work and dedication. Everyone has done an outstanding job ensuring that our magazine continues to engage Al Ain during my absence. As nice as it is being back in Canada, I cannot deny that after two weeks of leave, I am missing the red dunes of our Garden City and most important of all, the friends and colleagues that have become such an intimate part of my life during the last three years of living in Al Ain – I miss you all! Ramadan is quickly coming to an end and ushering in another Eid filled with joyous celebration. In this issue of The Source, we tip our hats to the good people of Oasis Hospital, who are living up to their legacy of charity and compassion by giving the gift of a smile to a little boy. Eid is indeed a time for giving and there is often nothing more memorable or heartwarming than the genuine smiles of our friends and families.

I will be enjoying the remainder of my vacation in Canada but a piece of me will always be in Al Ain and I hope those of you at home experience the best Eid ever with your loved ones. Eid Mubarak and see you all again soon!

Dead Body Falls Out of Coroner's Van Along Busy Road

Drivers traveling on a busy Bucks County, Pa. road on Friday had to navigate an unusual obstruction -- a gurney carrying a corpse.

Woman Gets Wedding 'She Deserved' a Day Before Her Death. A Bucks County Coroner's Office van was traveling down the 100 block of East Street Road in Lower Southampton, Pa. around noon when the vehicle's rear door malfunctioned, the coroner's office confirms. The body then rolled out of the van and onto the road near the Bucks Crossing Shopping Center.

A photo from the scene shows the body, wrapped in a sheet, sitting in the middle of the street as cars passed. A bystander helped the driver remove the body from the road, according to LevittownNow.com.

Diarrhea can be serious in infants and small children because of the risk of dehydration. The best treatment for diarrhea in children is to give plenty of fluids; there is usually no need to give medicine. Oral rehydration salts may be used to prevent dehydration. A child who appears to be severely dehydrated, or who has a fever or bloody stools, should get immediate medical attention. If possible, children should complete their routine childhood vaccines on the normal schedule before traveling. However, if they must travel earlier, accelerated schedules are available for many vaccines. Unhygienic laundries in Al Ain are coming under the scanner

Laundries in the garden city have been facing a stiff time as the civic administration has demanded strict compliance with the laws, safety regulations and recommended practices. Al Ain Municipality has initiated intensive inspections of the city’s laundries that are warned to abide by the law or face fines and the seizure of illegal washing apparatus. Contrary to the law, many laundries have been using washing facilities established in the Zareebas (agricultural farms). Washing clothes in unauthorised places such as farms and houses is illegal as the practice conflicts with the requirements of health and safety, according to Ahmad Nader Al

EAD promotes sustainable groundwater use at Liwa Date Festival

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) is continuing to encourage farmers to use groundwater sustainably at the Liwa Date Festival, currently taking place in the Western Region. EAD is participating at the annual festival, which promotes the UAE’s heritage and history of date farming, as part of its efforts to highlight the important link between the sustainable use of groundwater and the long-term health of Abu Dhabi’s agricultural industry, specifically date farms. “Dates are an integral part of our culture and especially important during the Holy month of Ramadan. However, most of Abu Dhabi’s dates are nourished with groundwater, a dwindling resource,” Eng. Mansoor Al Tamimi, Groundwater Scientist at EAD said. “Our goal is to ensure the responsible use of this strategic resource so farming activities, including the date industry, can thrive for many generations to come.”

Niyadi, Head of the Department of Health at the municipality. Al Ain Municipality has been revamping the rules and regulations since 2008 to streamline laundries and has issued compliance warnings. In a recent crackdown, the health department issued fines to 22 laundries and confiscated 17 washing machines for violating the rules.

The laundries have been asked to reexamine their business and operational activities, including washing and ironing, and use recommended hygienic practices, said the department official. Al Niyadi said that the department’s teams would continue to conduct surprise inspections to check practices at laundries. Residents in Al Ain

also feel that many laundries operate in an unhygienic environment. It is believed that employees mix the laundry and pass germs from contaminated clothes to others. Some believe that could be the case, but washing chemicals and detergents normally kill bacteria. The practice of laundry workers transporting clothes from their shops on bicycles at around midnight is considered unhygienic by many residents and municipality officials are intercepting them and confiscating the items. Residents also want the municipality to keep a check on the sudden price hikes now and then. - Courtesy: http://gulfnews.com

of this year. Large quantities of hashish were seized in his possession. Colonel Eid Mohammad Thani Hareb, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Deparmment at Dubai Police, said that the ‘Al Khaimah Operation’ “has inflicted a great blow to drug traders and smugglers”. He added that the Emirati suspect, M.S.A., is in his thirties. The police investigation showed that he was active in importing narcotics and drugs to the country and had dubious relations with people abroad to whom he used to transfer funds from time to time to send drugs to the country. Colonel Hareb added that after the raid and a thorough search of the suspect’s

house, the suspect himself led the team to a tent in the vicinity of the house where more than 52 kilograms of hashish were stashed inside plastic bags ready to be sold. Quantities of hashish were also found in the suspect’s vehicle, along with seven cellphones, money transfer documents, and several ATM cards from different banks in the country. The suspect was referred to the authorities where he was accused of possessing narcotics for trade, smuggling and use. Hareb called on all nationals and residents to call the toll-free number 800400400 or 050-5516218 in case of suspicion of any drug dealings, or to write to Dan.admin@ dubaipolce.gov.ae -Courtesy: http://gulfnews.com

hen I first laid eyes upon my children, they were knobbly blobs on a screen. Some bumps and lumps might have been the sprouting limbs, but might also have been the sprouting head or other bits. It was hard to tell what was where. And years later it often still was. I would come home to find them stashed away like treasures in drawers, boxes and cupboards, or stuffed between packs of noodles on my storeroom shelves, arms where their legs should have been and legs where their heads should have gone. They were like living Picassos. But no more. They grew in the time it took to make a cuppa, and now everything is fixed where it should be and it won’t be long until, like me, they can no longer trim their own toenails. And so we careen into the theme of this fortnight’s column, ‘Things Change’ or ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow, then Die Out,’ as I attempt a series of linguistic maneuvers to bring the article bus under control.

be small but are now big. Consider our furry mammalian ancestors. It is a fact that they coexisted with dinosaurs. But while the lizard-birds grew to legendary size, the mammals stayed small - imagine ratty little creatures darting desperately to safety at the approach of a ravenous dino-beastie. It must have been bog-easy to hear them coming. All that stomping about and roaring to camera would have given them away like the Americans gave themselves away in Vietnam. On that point, what could have alerted the VC more unambiguously to an American position than a skyful of choppers thundering into the jungle? Forget the myth of the Gooks homing in on the scent of toothpaste. All they had to do was cock an ear. EXT. JUNGLE - DAY A pair of withered guerrillas squat in the roots of a fig over a bowl of cold rice and a Kalashnikov. The THWACKA-THWACKA of a fleet of Hueys grows louder, closer. VC1 Hear that? VC2 Yeah, Marines… VC1 Sounds a bit like dinosaurs. VC2 I was thinkin’ the same thing.

In the Jurassic the climate was 3 degrees Celsius hotter than now, and the lizard-birds reveled in it. But then the climate cooled and they carked it. With the chill it was the turn of the mammals to grow big, and they have perched atop the food-chain fridge ever since, guarding the cheese against all comers. But as things changed in the past, so they may change again. Should the climate heat up once more, that situation might reverse. The lizard-birds may reclaim the Westinghouse while the big mammals go into the big green bin. After all, there are horses for courses, and if you can’t stay the course, you’re out. What fries in one pan flops in another. BAD NEWS FOR US HUMANS. But we hold the keys to the kitchen. And as the only known sentient being in the universe, it would be tragic if we were to die out because of an unwillingness to accept responsibili ty for the welfare of the things in our care, including ourselves. It would suggest that our most distinguishing characteristic is a failure as an evolutionary tool. I’m hopeful. Technology and innovation may yet pull us through, and the climate skeptics may yet evolve brains. In any case, the hotter course may prove to be the right one for the human horse, even if the form guide suggests otherwise.

Get Summer

Ready!

T

AND LASTLY, AESTHETICS! Alright, so the canvas is now clean and ready to be painted! I suggest going for a subtle makeup look, and in order to do that, you might want to drop the foundation and exchange it with a BB cream, just because it's easier to deal with when you perspire. Recently, I discovered that the Big Easy BB cream from Benefit, has 35 SPF and a wonderful liquid to powder finish so light, you barely feel it on your skin; summer Perfection!

he temperature is rising, we are sweating, some are tanning and others are getting nasty sunburns, minus the tan. Summer is here! And here I am with the summer essentials!

LET'S START WITH SKINCARE ROUTINE! It is very important to make sure that your face is spotless to accommodate for an impeccable makeup look that will last as long as you do! Always try to pick a gentle cleanser, so that you can wash your face twice a day, at least. A personal favorite of mine is the Bioderma Sensibio H2O remover. This product is HEAVENLY! It literally feels like you are cleansing your face with water, and a little product goes a long way, which is awesome.

Sarah a fresh graduate/PR wiz/Beauty blogger, has a self-prescribed u" nhealthy"addiction to anything beauty and makeup. Off and out into the real world from the American University in Dubai, Sarah has a lot to say about the beauty world on her blog www.opinionatedgirl.com, and wouldn't pass up an opportunity to say it.

NOW ONTO SCENTS! Ladies, we should always smell good and summer is a time to double the effort. However, you don't want to seem like you are trying too hard, so going for a summersuitable scent is very important. The perfume doesn't have to be expensive as long as it’s something that suits you. My summer picks include CK Eternity Silver Edition, which is perfect for a summer night out, or the Lolita Lempicka Elle L’aime perfume, which is lighter and would be suitable for the day. For a less expensive option, you can check out the Brazilian-inspired collection from Adidas, Get Ready.

A simple mascara and lipstick look, with a subtle flushed cheek is the way to go this summer. Go for a mascara that’s not too heavy to wear or too dramatic. My favorites at the moment include They’re Real and Rimmel’s Scandal Eyes Mascara. Since its summer, I always like to go for cheek tints or liquid blush rather than powdered ones. Benefit has a marvelous set of tints ranging from rosy colors to orchids; my personal favorite being the rosy Benetint. As for your lips, go for a long lasting bold and vibrant color. I am loving the Chubby Stick lipsticks. Revlon, Rimmel and Clinique all have amazing ones with endless colors, though for the summer, it’s always safer to pick colors that range from hot pink to coral. To transform your look into a night one, just replace your lipstick with a bold red one; Lolita Lempicka recently launched a new rouge that would serve that purpose. Plus, you can always add eyeliner for an even bolder look. Pick metallic/colorful ones from Bourjois’ newest collection or just go with a classic jet black liner. Make sure to top it off with some funky colorful nails to make up for the subtle (but gorgeous) face. I like to go for a nail polish that will last days at a time, so either go for a shellac treatment at home or use a good brand such as OPI. Do you want to win the set? Just Log on to www.opinionatedgirl.com and participate!

stuff for men

The men will play

I

t’s been a long time since I’ve had the freedom and joy of being alone in the house. Let me say that in a better way. The seasons before marriage and kids were such a lonely and depressing time in my life. What a blessing it is to be surrounded with little questions every five minutes and discussions with my wife over what we can do today to bring her happiness and joy. Several of my friends have been totally abandoned by their wives and children over the holidays. The family has just left their man of the house to rot on the couch with nothing to do but hope for a speedy return to cure their mundane lives. For those men who have been left for a period of time, I’ve got a few suggestions. Have you heard the words, when the wife is away the men will play? It’s time to get a few things accomplished that your loving family would not fully appreciate unless they were in your sandals. ELECTRONIC BLISS There are too many horror movies I want to download and several TV series’ I would like to start. I can’t remember the last time I did an Alien movie marathon. What would really relax the mind and kill the brain cells is staying up all night in the fantasy world of video games. Imagine if we could sneak, shoot, and slash until we passed out. You know the family would never see anything with “Warrior” or “Attack” in the title. It’s 16

time to go to the movies and watch a few things blow up.

or go look for some tools you really won’t use but could imagine using.

TROUGH Where I come from, the farm animals eat from a trough. It’s an endless supply of slop served every day. The animals know when it arrives and they all run over and dig in their faces. If you’ve been fasting all day, what better way to finish the day than with a choice of your own. Go to the nearest iftar buffet of your choice and chow down!

PRODUCTION Oddly, when I have found myself alone, there was usually a project to complete. Finish hanging the shelf, fix the table leg, or wash the car yourself. It never hurts to get organized and rearrange something before the family returns. When we are productive we feel much better. My wife keeps asking me why I stare at the paint job I completed. I’m proud honey. One friend of mine decided to serve dinner for an entire group of grocery workers during the holidays. That was impressive.

SHOP What man, of his own free will, physically decides to shop? Don’t forget that this is the one opportunity to be hands free. No one is begging for a bathroom just as you get to the mall. There are no toys to visit or dresses to wander through. This is your chance to take your sweet time and not have to smell the rose candles. Instead you can hit the sports shop, the electronic store,

Enjoy the summer for a little while. Savor every moment. When the family returns, they will see how rested, fat, and happy you are. Then remember how much you actually need and love your family. They are all you have that is really important.

Their next stop was the UAE, where they have been unable to get health insurance that would cover the operation (birth defects are rarely treated under expat Health Insurance). The complexity of cleft palate surgery made the expense of the treatment beyond the family’s reach. Despite trying a number of options, no one was able to help – until the day they met Hulsey, Chief Community Relations Officer for Oasis Hospital, Al Ain.

T

rey Hulsey was driving through Al Ain when he first saw Fadhel, playing in a group by the road. “I was actually quite angry” he admits, “no child should have to suffer with a cleft palate anymore, and this is a developed country!” Hulsey stopped the car and asked who the child’s father was. “I wanted to ask him why he wasn’t looking after his son properly”, he says, “but then I heard this family’s story and became determined to help”. Mr. Abbas was planning to have surgery in Syria, but as the civil war intensified the family had to flee Syria for Jordan when Fadhel was just 6 months old. Again Abbas tried to find surgery for his son, but again the family had to move on because he was not able to find work or afford a home

His father tells us that recently he has started checking himself in the mirror and asking ‘Why am I like this and my brothers are different?” Hulsey gave the family his business card and, making no promises, invited them to visit the hospital. Oasis Hospital has always been a charity hospital, where the needy can find help. “The Kennedy’s loved the community of Al Ain in the ways that were needed when they started the hospital, and we are committed to continuing the tradition of loving our community in the way that is needed today”, explains Trey. “Whether that is helping an elderly Emirati mother get to the hospital for her appointment, or helping a small Syrian boy get much-needed surgery, our founding value is to demonstrate the love of God for the people of Al Ain”. When Fadhel came to Oasis, the verdict was unanimous. This was someone the hospital should help. Fadhel suffers from both cleft lip and cleft palate – he has problems both eating and

Although there is no one in Oasis Al Ain that can carry out this particular operation, the hospital is part of an international group. “CURE is a network of charitable hospitals, with medical experts from around the world working in some of the most difficult situations,” explains Alex Jankuloski, acting CEO of Oasis Hospital. “We knew that we had a specialist who could perform this surgery in our sister hospital in Kenya, so we got in touch and asked if they would help us out”. The hospital in Kenya agreed, and so this Ramadan, Fadhel is setting out on a journey that will change his life.

HOME AGAIN! Ahed Torbey, Director of Customer Service, Oasis, with Fadhel, Mr Abbas and Mr. Hulsey.

“I am so excited and waiting for the day I will see my son in a better way”, says Mr Abbas. “I thank Oasis Hospital and everyone else who is helping in this.” And his son? “Fadhel is happy about the whole thing. He knows every time he comes to the hospital that this is the place that will make him better”. The Source

Exercising in hot weather

H

ere in the sunshine region, the hottest weather occurs between May and August. That is far too long a time to shelf your exercise program so here are some tips for exercising in the heat.

STAY HYDRATED Hot weather exercise increases our body temperature. We sweat to reduce the temperature but if we are exposed too long to extreme temperatures, heat exhaustion could set in. Hot humid weather does not allow for the evaporation of sweat and thus impedes the cooling process. One of the best ways to cope is by drinking plenty of water. Our bodies are 60% water and we need to maintain this level. We lose about 2 – 3% of this during exercise, especially in hot weather. Every twenty to thirty minutes you should aim to drink 8 to 10 ounces of water. You should have the same amount after you finish exercising. Don’t drink too much because this can cause over hydration and avoid sports drinks that are loaded with calories you don’t need. BE GENTLE Heat and humidity wears you down If you normally run, jog or walk. If you’re a brisk 20

The Source

walker, slow it down. As your body adapts to the heat, gradually increase the pace and length of your workout. If you have a medical condition and/or take prescription medications, do ask your physician if you need to take any additional precautions.

AVOID THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY Rise early to catch the cool of the morning, or go out at sunset or later. In the heat of midday, take cover in the shade, jump in a pool or sign up for an aqua-aerobics class. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Wear light, comfortable and loose fitting clothes. Dark colors absorb the heat, which can make you feel as if you’re wrapped in a warm blanket. Heavyweight, tight-fitting clothing will also heat you up. Keep it loose and keep it light; this way, more air will be able to circulate over your skin, keeping you cool. SNACK WELL Healthy juicy snacks like fruit are great for exercise. In the hot weather, avoid dry snacks, like popcorn, biscuits or energy bars that will need more water from your body to be processed. These are also denser in calories, defeating the purpose of exercise itself. KNOW WHEN TO STOP It may be annoying to not complete your

daily exercise goal and have to cut your workout short, but pay attention to your body and how you feel. If you feel weak or light headed, dizzy or get cramps, it’s time to find air conditioned comfort quickly and abandon your workout. There is no need to make yourself sick. Even a walk for twenty minutes has numerous health benefits. It is more about how frequently you exercise rather than the amount of time in any given workout.

You have a very extensive academic background; how did you fall into your field of study? I was born in the city of Kurfakan, where mountains are a part of life. The mountains helped me select my geology major in university. Whenever and wherever I walked, much of my time was spent looking at the ground in an attempt to understand the mystery of the land. After I finished my bachelors, my advisor told me that hydrology was a difficult area, like a road full of thorns; but I wanted to do something for my country and that is how I moved on to hydrology and the study of ground water. Much of your youth was spent studying in the USA; tell us about your experiences. During my stay in the USA I became independent. It was the best time of my life. I learnt valuable life lessons, like problem solving and dealing with people from different communities. My first public presentation on ground water in the eastern regions of the UAE was there, in front of more than 200 people. I will never forget that day. It was one of the most important stages of my life and helped shape my future. Every place is different and starting a new life in a strange place has its challenges. In time I became well acquainted with my American and other Arab colleagues. The biggest challenge in the beginning was the longing for home and family. But once I settled in, it got easier and I spent most of my time immersed in work. Two years later

my wife joined me during my thesis, which was wonderful. Studying in America is an excellent learning experience for everyone. They have a great deal of knowledge and applied technology and I think it is important for us to bring that knowledge to our country. What are your views on education in the UAE The government of the UAE has invested enormously in education and education is directly linked to the economy. In order to sustain our economy, education needs to remain at the top of our agenda with a continued influx of reputed international campuses. The UAE boasts exceptional facilities, infrastructure, stability and security, and is attracting people from all over the world in search of solid prospects and opportunities. Education is a pillar of life and the sustainability of any nation. UAEU is the oldest federal university ranked as a top university on a global scale. For children born and raised here, studying in local institutions makes them more productive as a result of being at home with their families. If they go abroad to study it is important to return home armed with their best practises for the betterment of the community. You travel a lot; which is your favourite place? After the USA, it is Paris. I love to wake up early in the morning and enjoy a coffee and croissant at one of the traditional French

cafes while walking to UNESCO for a meeting. Are you able to make time for any hobbies? I have a rock collection. Some I have collected myself and the others I have purchased. I love reading historical novels about the regions I encounter during my frequent travels. I also like collecting old magazines and newspapers that have featured the UAE. Sometimes I travel just to find some of these publications. Any international newspaper that speaks about the UAE I file away in my library. My collection also includes old books that cover journeys of various people to the UAE. My goal is to amass a huge collection of literature written about the UAE and put it to good use someday. I remember once in the early 2000’s, when a friend in the USA gave me a clipping about Dubai he found in a local newspaper. It made me so happy. Even my colleagues from Qatar and Egypt helped me find books and journals about the UAE. Eid is coming up; what would you like to say to our readers? I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the rulers of this great country for a job well done and wish my family, friends and everyone else in The UAE and beyond, a very blessed and safe Eid Al Fitr. Clean out the clutter

S

ummer is a time for fun and many of you may be back from a vacation or are about to embark on one. Before the break is over and school starts, make some time to clean the clutter from your house.

Since the kids don’t have school, it’s a good time to enlist their help and sort through old papers, projects, photos, books and clothes. Getting kids to actually do the work can be tough so you need to get creative. First off, don’t attempt to have them accomplish too much at once. It may be nice to get it over with quickly but kids tend to get bored or tired as you well know. Draw up a plan, spanning over a week or more, depending on how much organising you have to do. Reward them at the end of the cleaning frenzy, which will have them looking forward to helping in the future. Stick to a particular time of the day, preferably during the early afternoon when it’s too hot to go outside. This way you keep the kids busy and away from the TV, tablets and computers. Let them know the timings in advance, so they don’t make any plans with their friends.

Once the agenda is fixed, think of some unique daily tokens of appreciation for your child. If you have more than one child, make it a contest - whoever is more efficient wins. Next is getting down to it. Do not start with the easiest thing first, rather the biggest or most tedious job. This way, once it’s done, you will have the satisfaction of having packed away a major chunk of your

work in the early stages. Have good music playing in the background to make work more fun. Sit with the kids and supervise them to ensure things are completed in an orderly fashion without the pillow fight breakouts. Don’t let them do all the work; give them a hand and enjoying the bonding opportunity. Take your time going through things, especially old projects and drawings. Let your child take pride in their hard work and see how far along they have come. Make sure to separate useful books, clothes and toys which can be saved for the future (only if you are sure you will need them) or donated to charity. Take your kids along when making the donation; charity begins at home, and you are best equipped to teach them. Once the kids room is cleaned it’s time to turn the attention to yourself and your partner. Clean out all the bills and receipts from your car, and dispose of the ones you don’t need. Don’t forget the pots and pans in your kitchen, old bags, shoes and clothes. We all love to hang on to things thinking, ‘I will wear it’, but in reality we never do. Look at all the things in your closet you thought you would use and haven’t touched in years and give them to charity. Set a target and reward yourself when it’s done; this will promote more frequent future clean-ups. Now that you’re all done, enjoy the rest of your vacation – you deserve it!

F

or most expats and non-Muslims, Eid Al Fitr is a time for short vacations, exploring the country or shopping and taking advantage of the numerous activities held at every mall in the city. But have you ever wondered what Eid Al Fitr stands for? We know that Muslims celebrate this Eid but there is much more to this three day celebration than meets the eye. Eid Al Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shaw'waal, at the completion of Ramadan. Shaw'waal is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The Eid-al-Fitr is a very joyous day; it is a type of Thanksgiving Day for the believing men and women. On this day, Muslims show their real joy and appreciation for health, strength and the opportunities in life Allah has given in return for their devotion. On the first day of Eid, every believing man, woman and child goes to prayer and participates in this important occasion.

By K Radha Kishan

They wake up early, take a Ghusl (bath) after Fajr (first rays of the sun) and dress in their best clothes. Breakfast includes dates in homage of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), who did not venture out on the morning of Eid Al Fitr without first eating some dates. The reason for this was to mark the difference between the days of the Eid and those of Ramadan. The day of Eid marks the end of Ramadan and the long days of fasting. The Salaat-al-Eid (prayer) or khutba(sermon) generally takes place at a mosque close to the home. They use two separate routes to and from the Mosque as it is said that on

the day of Eid, the Prophet would return home via different routes, in hopes of meeting as many of his relatives and friends as possible. During the prayer service the Imam (holy man) encourages people to embrace goodness and ward off evil. At the conclusion of prayer, they greet one another, give gifts to the young and visit each other’s homes. It is often an opportune time to invite their non-Muslim neighbours, co-workers, classmates and business acquaintances, to Eid festivities and introduce them to their culture. The festival is a symbol of the pleasure and strength of association. It promotes the renewal of brotherly and sisterly human ties. There is a call to be tolerant, reject differences, to stop fighting, and abandon grudges and animosities. Now that we know a little more about this amazing Eid, get out there and enjoy the celebration and remember, if you do get invited by someone for Eid, accept the offer graciously and be sure to bring a little something for your host. Chocolates, sweets and fruits are always a welcome addition.

There is nothing like fasting to bring about a whole new perspective on food and taste, and if you are up for an outstanding new experience in both regards, then do what our Source Foodies did and make haste to Coriander at Bawadi Mall. Here, you will discover a selection of Indian delights from a wide range of the countries regions, all fused onto an ambient stage of perfection. The dish we are featuring in this issue is definitely the best biryani I have ever tasted. The meat was unbelievably tender and flaked at the touch of a fork! But don’t just take our word for it, head down to Coriander, conveniently located at Bawadi Mall and dig into the authentic taste of India. Chef Nandan Singh The Source

city review

Tea, anybody? By Komal R Lakhani

City review’s focus is bringing you something new, fun, unique or something interesting to do in the city of Al Ain. This week we bring you a tradition that has been around for 100’s of years but is still new today, and although one culture can be associated with its inception, every culture expresses its own interpretation of this timeless ritual. I’m talking about the evening tea, made famous by the English and now served at Hilton Al Ain, the very place Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom stayed during her visit in April of 1979, hosted by Sheikh Zayed, the father of The UAE. I was invited for tea by Samantha (from the Hilton) one Saturday evening and there was no shortage of conversation during our tea experience. What I liked about the tea service were the tiny sandwiches with coloured bread and what I loved were the mini pastries and soft moist scones with a side of whipped cream. The focus of an evening tea is not the food or the tea itself, rather on that middle time between work and family responsibilities. It’s a time for people to just sit and enjoy a warm cup of tea over good conversations. I saw such a group of women enjoying their tea on that same evening and with genuine smiles and chit chat galore, they left the worries and hassles of everyday living far behind. Like the cheerful ladies, we can all use a pleasant time of repose in the company of friends and now we have an ideal such place right here at the Hilton Al Ain. The evening tea takes place at the Palm Court Café every Saturday from 5:00pm to 6:00pm and is priced at AED 55 per person. It includes high tea, coffee, a selection of sandwiches and sweet culinary delights. The location is perfect if you want to have a small kitty party or just spend a quality evening with family and friends.

James Garner: TV & Movie Legend Dies At 86 James Garner, beloved on both TV and movie screens, died at the age of 86. The actor, best known for starring roles on the television series’ The Rockford Files and Maverick, passed away of natural causes at his home on July 19, police said..

Guru and Devil share a cordial moment at a celebrity football match

James was one of the first actors to enjoy success on both television and movies. The Emmy award winner and Oscar nominated actor had a starring role in the 2004 classic The Notebook, alongside Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams and Gena Rowlands. He played the older version of Ryan’s character. The actor is survived by his wife, Lois Clarke daughter Greta “Gigi” Garner. One of the industry’s truest of gentlemen and legends will be greatly missed.

Gossip Girl Star burned her wedding Dress

Blake Lively says her wedding dress was burned accidentally right after she tied the knot with Ryan Reynolds in 2012. The 26-year-old former Gossip Girl actress, made her comments to Vogue magazine during the shoot for the August 2014 issue. She said that while she watched Florence Welch singing at her wedding reception, sparklers were brought out. One of them burned the front of her custom-made Marchesa gown. It was her husband who first noticed that the dress was ruined. "And later, my dress was hanging up and Ryan said, ‘isn’t that beautiful?' I said, ‘what?' And he pointed to the burn," she told Vogue. "My heart just stopped, because it was such a sensitive little subject. And he said, ‘You'll always remember that moment with Florence singing and the sparklers. You have that forever, right there, preserved.' Now that's my favourite part of the dress."

‘The Patriot’ Actress Dies At 21

The Guru star Abhishek Bachchan and Kick movie’s Devil Salman Khan haven’t let their past (read: Aishwarya Rai) come in the way of being nice to each other. The two exchanged hellos and seemed warm in their interaction when they met each other during a celebrity football match organised by Aamir Khan’s daughter, Ira, for providing shelter to stray animals. In the past a lot has been written about how the two stayed away from each other in order to avoid awkward situations. However, a source reveals that Abhishek and Salman have both moved on and are extremely civil and polite with each other when they meet at such public events.

King Khan’s sarcasm is not for everyone! Shah Rukh Khan is a man gifted with incredible sense of humour and charisma and we LOVE it! Recently various rumours about SRK were flying thick and fast, to which the superstar responded with a sarcastic tweet. Gossip mills were abuzz that Shah Rukh’s Happy New Year trailer will be the longest ever in Bollywood. Not just that, speculations were made that King Khan will be cast along with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadiremake which will be produced by Rohit Shetty.

Skye McCole Bartusiak, one of Mel Gibson’s co-stars in The Patriot, passed away at the young age of 21 on July 19. Her mother, Helen McCole Bartusiak, revealed the devastating news of her daughter’s death to CNN.

Shah Rukh made a witty tweet on the rumours saying,” 2day’s News HNY trailer is longest.Casting for Rohit film done. Now that somebody has done all my work for me,guess I can take the year off..”

“We lost our girl,” Helen told CNN. That’s just so devastating. Skye was just so young. “She was a kind and really beautiful girl,” Helen also said. Investigators do not yet have an official cause of death, but her mother said she had been suffering from epileptic seizures recently.

But reading the comments from his fans, King Khan tweeted,” And reading some of the return tweets to my last one….seems sarcasm is lost on many. Ok back to more important things…have to clip my nails.” The Source

MUSCAT-EERS for the weekend

I

t’s a weekend trip that’s so easy to do from the UAE. Oman is right on our doorstep, and with its mountain ranges, wadis and dramatic landscapes, the sultanate is hard to beat.

We were looking for a close get-away, and chose Muscat; you can drive there, but we opted to take the 39-minute flight from Dubai International – it took far longer to board and taxi, but once you take off, you’re up and down in no time. The first thing you notice on arrival is there’s none of the bling found in Dubai. Nor is it as organised. Passengers are herded to the long and winding queue for visas, and maybe because it was Friday, things moved slowly.

32

The Source

This could also be because, in Oman, people don’t rush as much – the pace of life is more sedate, and there’s far less traffic on the roads. You quickly realise you’ve arrived in the real Arabia: the Arabia that has seen its capital expand along the coast in low-rise, white-washed suburbs with sandy beaches and opulent hotels, yet hasn’t thrown out its heritage in the rush to modernise.

the Gulf. Its opening in 2011 put the capital firmly on the map as a forward-thinking, progressive city. Oman’s ruler Sultan Qaboos is passionate about classical music and his desire to develop this art form in the sultanate culminated in a classic Islamicstyle Royal Opera House, made from Omani desert rose stone and stucco wall coverings, and surrounded by landscaped gardens.

We picked up our hire car and discovered that most parts of Muscat are easy to reach. Not far from the airport, you sail past the magnificent, sandstone Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque – big enough to house up to 20,000 worshippers and famous for the enormous 8.5-tonne chandelier hanging inside and the world’s second-largest handwoven Persian carpet.

Muscat itself is actually three smaller towns that have grown together over time: Muscat, the ‘walled city’ and site of the royal palaces; Muttrah, originally a fishing village; and Ruwi, the commercial and diplomatic centre.

Near our hotel, we came across another splendid building – the first opera house in

On our first evening, we drove into Muttrah as the sun set and the evening prayers got underway. Topped with minarets, Muttrah stretches along an attractive cornice. At the old port, we saw the Sultan’s rather

impressive super-yacht docked at sea, and admired the rows of traditional white homes with intricately carved balconies, stained glass art and elegant eaves. Opposite the port is the ancient – and unmissable – Muttrah souk, where there are bargains to be had, especially sumptuous pashminas, gold jewellery, frankincense, spices and perfumes. Tempting scents waft through the souk, and I lingered for a while, gazing at the stalls set up beneath gorgeous Islamic architecture and watching the hawkers tout their wares. The next day, we’d booked a speedboat trip to spot dolphins (and the occasional whale). This spectacle offers the opportunity to not only see some of the leaping pods of dolphins that live in the Gulf of Oman, but also to view the rugged coastline from the sea. For our boys, witnessing lively, grey bottlenose dolphins in flight was the highlight of our visit, while in my books, meandering along the coast taking in the craggy scenery was equally unforgettable. No trip to Oman is complete without visiting one of the sultanate’s lush wadis. I’m told that if you visit one of the wadis where you can jump in and swim, it feels just like being in Indiana Jones. To round our day off we drove out to a riverbed not far from Muscat, where we found several car owners washing their vehicles in the trickle of clear, cool water. We paddled in the stream to cool off, then drove through the surrounding brown, serrated mountains, stopping at an old fort to take photos of the giant, perfectly formed sand castle standing guard over the palm tree-lined wadi. Think Before You Speak Everyone at the railway station was waiting for the train. Among the crowd, there were a group of friends and youngsters who were on board for vacation. This group made loud noises as the train entered the station to welcome it. They ran to get their reserved seats before anyone else. An old man with a young boy aged about 15 came running to get the train. They entered the train just before it started to move. They had their seats adjacent to the loud group of friends. The young boy was so surprised to see everything. He acclaimed at his father, ‘Dad, the train is moving and the things are moving backwards.’ His father smiled and nodded his head. As the train started moving fast, the young boy again screamed, ‘Dad the trees are green in colour and are running backwards very fast.’ His father said, yes dear and smiled. Just like a kid, he was watching everything with great enthusiasm. A fruit seller passed by and the young boy told his dad, ‘I want to eat apples.’ His father bought him some apples. He said, ‘Oh apple, it looks better than it tastes’ I love this colour.’ The group was watching all the activities of this boy and asked the boy’s father ‘does your son have a problem? Why is he behaving so differently?’ A friend from the group made fun of him and said, ‘I think his son is mad.’ The father of the young boy with patience replied to the group. ‘My son was born blind. A few days ago he was operated on and got his vision. He is seeing various things in his life for the first time.’ The young friends became very quiet and apologized to the father and son. Moral of the Story: Think Before You Speak and don’t make fun of people even if they are different.

Did you know? "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is an English-language pangram—a phrase that contains all of the letters of the alphabet.
