ourteen grueling hours of being crammed in an elongated metal tube alongside 300 other victims had come to an end and as I made my way down the stairway of the aircraft, I reassured myself that it was indeed just a normal August evening in the UAE and I was not standing in the jet blast of the airbus that had brought me here. One month away in Canada and I had almost forgotten how hot it really is in our sweet desert home.

Well the summer of 2014 has come to an end - even if the sweltering oven-like heat is here to stay for quite a while longer - and many of us are preparing ourselves for the back to work and school grind. I hope you all enjoyed a vacation with family and friends and are recharged and ready to meet the challenges that await you back at work. I enjoyed an adventure packed vacation back in Canada with my family and although it all passed far too quickly, I will admit that it feels wonderful to be reunited with the team at work and the many wonderful friends here in Al Ain. If you are suffering from a touch of the after vacation blues, we have some tips for you in this issue that will help with jetlag and that transition into reality. We also took to the streets of Al Ain to discover what some of our citizens did over the summer and the places they travelled to.

Enjoy the last few days of your vacation, if you still have any and don’t forget to grab a copy of your favourite community magazine so that we can share ourselves with you! Happy reading everyone and welcome back to the best city in the UAE!

ASK THE DR.

"Hello Doc, I recently started feeling very lethargic. Though there is no real change in my daily routine or the food I eat. I just feel too tired to do anything when I get home from work. Is it something I need to get checked out? Thanks" Thanks for such a great question. There are many possible causes of fatigue.

y k c a W d l r o W

Sometimes we may feel tired for a few days or weeks due to a viral infection. Sometimes fatigue is the result of not getting enough quality sleep. Sometimes we are tired because we are stressed or depressed. And sometimes fatigue is a symptom of something more sinister such as thyroid disease or cancer. There are many other potential causes as well. If your unusual fatigue has been present for more than 4 weeks then I would recommend seeing a doctor about it. The doctor is always on call at The Source and asking the right questions can lead to better health. Dr. Gabriel comes to us from Oasis Hospital, where he practices family medicine. Simply send your questions to askthedoctor@ thesourceuae.com and see them answered and published in the magazine.

“The world’s oldest European eel just died in its home, a well in a southern Swedish fishing town, aged 155. Some people have ghosts in their attics. Tomas Kjellman, resident in the little fishing town of Brantevik in Skåne, has always had an eel in his well.

Which means, I love cooking.

‘My family bought the cottage in 1962, and we always knew the housepet was included,” Kjellman told The Local. Its presence has been well-documented for more than a century. But no more. ‘Of course it’s sad. I have memories of the eel from when I was a child,’ Kjellman said.”

Ring Tailed Lemurs make their debut at Al Ain Zoo Al Ain Zoo recently welcomed a family of Lemurs, in collaboration with Al Bustan Zoological Centre in Sharjah. The family of five are the first of their kind at the zoo, and will provide a unique and unmatched visitor experience that will potentially increase the number of visitors to the zoo. Recognisable to anyone who has seen the animated film Madagascar, these intelligent, playful and inquisitive primates are sure to be a hit with children and their parents alike. These animals, native only to Madagascar, are classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species due to their dwindling numbers in the wild. Commenting on the new additions, Muna Al Dhaheri, Chief of Conservation and Education said: “The new addition of the Lemurs is a testament to the zoo’s commitment to implementing and developing conservation programmes. Native to Madagascar, their presence at Al Ain Zoo is important and highlights our dedication to areas such as captive management, conservation research, captive breeding, propagation, and the reintroduction of endangered species into

Bachelors to leave downtown areas in Al Ain Bachelors living in residential areas where families live have been warned to move to non-residential areas as the city municipality has launched an initiative against crowded bachelor accommodation in downtown Al Ain. Many bachelors have been given notice to make the shift to Sanaiya (industrial area) and the Companies Area located on Mazyad Road. “A municipality official has recently asked us to move to non-family areas,” said Murli Kumar, a pick-up truck driver who lives in Al Kuwaitat along with six other bachelors in a single room. Al Kuwaitat is a family residential area in the heart of the city where a large number of bachelors also live in old houses that are divided into multiple rooms.Mostly taxi drivers, shop owners, cleaning companies’ workers and labourers live in these poorly maintained dwellings. 10

the wild whenever possible.” Al Dhaheri also assured that the preparations helped environmentally strengthen the Lemurs, and that the Zoo is providing them with entertainment within the enclosures to suit their actual behaviour in the wild.

Lemurs, known for their distinctive long tails coated with black spirals, have several shades of brown covering their thick fur. Unlike other tree-climbing primates, lemurs prefer spending their time playing and resting on the ground.

As a routine procedure, Al Ain Zoo places any new animals joining the zoo for a minimum of 30 days in quarantine. The primates were placed in quarantine for a period of 45 days to ensure their safety and rule out any medical problems and diseases.

Their basic diet consists of vegetables, fruits, small mammals, and insects, which provides them with the needed proteins and carbohydrates. Lemurs’ lifespan ranges between 16 and 19 years in the wild, but can live up to 20 years.

Woman dies at Abu Dhabi Airport

Abu Dhabi transit passenger suspected to have Ebola A 35-year-old Nigerian woman suffering from advanced metastatic cancer travelling from Nigeria to India via Abu Dhabi has died, the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD) has announced During the transit phase at Abu Dhabi International Airport, the patient’s health deteriorated. Despite prompt medical assistance she could not be resuscitated. At the time of resuscitation she had shown signs that may be consistent with Ebola virus infection. Nigeria is one of many West African countries battling to contain the virus that, as of last week, had killed 961 people, according to the World Health Organisation. HAAD said in a statement that her existing medical condition provided an adequate medical explanation for her death.

“Full safety and precautionary measures have been taken by the medical staff who attended the patient according to the World Health Organisation standards for dealing with suspected cases of infectious diseases,” the statement read. “In addition, all contacts of the patient [her husband, who was the only person sitting next to her on the plane, and five medics who resuscitated her] are in isolation pending the result of Ebola testing on the patient. They are all well with no symptoms.” The Ministry of Health assured the public that there is no risk to the community, to fellow passengers on the plane from Nigeria and those in the airport, reported state news agency Wam.

You Can Now Cast Your Google+ Stream To Your Chromecast You can now cast your Google+ stream directly from the app to your Chromecast-connected TV set to view posts, pictures and videos in full HD glory. This only works if you're on Android, for now, but as the trend suggests it may come to iOS devices sooner or later. You can flip through posts with manual controls on your smartphone screen or simply wait for the stream to auto-play. Android Police reports that the Google+ interface on the TV looks similar to the app, with beautiful, full-bleed images and posts highlighted right on top of the screen. Even if you don't use Google+, the ability to cast it on a big screen has tremendous potential. We hope that google soon finds a way for the other phone apps to be a part of the Chromecast magic. Chromecast is easily available online in the UAE starting at AED 149 (Approx).

LG’s flexible and transparent OLED displays are the beginning of another technology revolution

SNIPP3T – Celebrity news snippets from the web and social media - Free. iOS Crazy about celebrities? Want to follow everything related to a particular person? Download Microsoft’s latest iPhone app snipp3t. A personalized and fun app that lets you stay up to date on the celebrities you care about most. With news, images, videos, social mentions, and individual profiles from across the web for over 10,000 celebrities, SNIPP3T is the only app that gives you a comprehensive view of celebrities that matter the most to you. It is also an interesting way to follow sports through the lens of your favorite players, if they’re in the database. LG has produced a massive, 18-inch OLED display that can be rolled up into a tight cylinder with a radius of just 3 centimeters (1.2 inches). In addition, LG has also announced an 18-inch OLED display that is highly transparent. By 2017, LG thinks it can combine both of these prototypes to create a 60-inch, UHD (4K) display that is both flexible and transparent. Is the dream of a flexible, fold-up “e-paper” display finally upon us? For now the flexible 18-inch OLED display has a fairly low resolution of 1280×810. LG (understandly) isn’t saying much about the underlying technologies, but the main breakthrough seems to be the use of polyimide for the display’s backplane. Polyimides are strong, flexible plastics that are already used extensively in the electronics industry — for example in the ribbon that attaches a laptop’s display to the motherboard, which is put through huge stresses during thousands of open/

close cycles. LG says it achieved “maximum curvature radius” because polyimide allowed for a much thinner (and thus more flexible) backplane than “conventional plastic.” LG’s 18-inch transparent display has a transmittance of 30%, up from around 10% for previous transparent displays. As you can see in the image above, 30% looks pretty darn good. The high level of transmittance was achieved by reducing the “haze” caused by display’s underlying electronics to just 2%. You may not realize it, but every single pixel in your smartphone or laptop’s display is wired up, with a large number of switching transistors thrown in for good measure too. This circuitry is so small that you can’t actually see it, but they block enough light to make a material hazy. LG says it also uses “transparent pixel design” technology, though it hasn’t given any details beyond that.

Wasted Opportunity

M

y wife grew up in a kind of poverty. New clothes were received once a year, and on that same day (and only that day) she would experience c h i c k e n . There wasn’t much to go around, and consequently from her earliest days she has practiced a frugality that most conspicuously manifests itself in an abhorrence of waste. Now, if my family goes out without first determining a good place to eat, we end up eating junk food. Usually it’s at one of the prosaic burger chains, experience having taught us that the thronged alternative ‘exotic’ chains offer but broken promises of something more substantial, Fuddruckers being the noteworthy exception. But the fast food industry as a whole exhibits profound ironies which trouble me. That we accept without protest glamorous images of food bearing scant relation to the sad fare that is served is evidence of the potency of an advertising industry which manipulates the cultural imaginary (the imagined, better, future) so skillfully and relentlessly that the promise subjugates reality. And the appropriation of words denoting feelings of pleasure or contentment is part of a marketing con attempting to instill in the impressionable an association between consumption, a business and

an unattainable state for purely financial benefit. There’s certainly no nutritional benefit. Morgan Spurlock gained 11.1kg in 30 days and saddled himself with a host of related psychological and health issues by eating only fast food. Don’t they have a conscience? If I ran a fast food joint, every serving would come with a complimentary apology. “Here’s your order, Madam.” PLONK. “Sorry for that.” It cuts me. It really does. But it’s the waste that hurts the more. Once the wrapping is downed and the burger discarded (I know that should be the other way around, but the difference is negligible), we are left with

JJ Dubblejay

several acres of once-used wilderness to stuff into a trash can brimming with its hatch wedged open and the spillage piled up around it like a giant choking on a glut of little boys. It’s extraordinary the speed at which forest purchased for a ten second trip to a wobbly food-court table can metamorphose into 10,000 years of landfill. Surely, all in all, it amounts to a misallocation of resources. If I am overcome with guilt, the wife is insulted. But I have the solution. All we need to do is make retailers responsible for the disposal of the waste. To some this is sacrilege. Since the beginnings of civilization the contract between buyer and seller has ended with the receipt of the goods for which currency has been exchanged. As the goods transfer to the purchaser, so does the responsibility. But it’s time to move on. Behold Civilization II, in which fast food chains, miracles of efficiency, play a pivotal role. Efficiency pays. Five seconds saved in the production of a sandwich adds 1% to the bottom line. Some of the best minds in the world compete in the race to find those seconds. If the same brainpower and drive for efficiency was applied to the disposal of packaging, the problem could turn into an asset that would stun. The process could be patented and licensed. It’s a cherry ripe for the pickin’. We need to twist the arms of the boffins and the bean-counters so that they turn their minds to the task. Make them responsible, saddle them with a seemingly catastrophic burden to their business model and watch as, counterintuitively, the posse mount their steeds and ride into town to claim the bounty. Then a fast food meal might make us happy.

A Healthy Diet For Your Hair

well balanced diet containing all essential vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats can keep the hair healthy. It’s necessary to hone the nutrient intake through the food we eat to make sure it is healthy for the hair. A nutritious diet can help sustain healthy hair growth, prevent hair shedding and hair loss. Below are certain essential nutrients and minerals required for healthy hair:

PROTEINS Proteins are the building blocks for your hair. Hair needs adequate amounts of protein as energy for hair cell renewal and nourishment. If your diet lacks protein, your hair is the first thing that will suffer. This is 14

The Source

why it is necessary to include a wide-range of high-protein foods in your diet. Having a protein-rich diet also helps other tissues of the body such as your heart, liver and lungs which are very important to the body. Some examples of plant-based sources of proteins include quinoa, tofu, seitan, lentils, nuts, coconut, white beans and more. If you are lactose tolerant, you could also take advantage of cheese and milk products for extra protein. Fish and eggs are also great sources of protein.

IRON For healthy hair and hair growth, good levels of iron and stored iron (also known as ferritin) are essential. Red meat contains the most iron and is a great source for it. For vegetarians however, some of the plant-based sources of iron include Beets, leafy vegetables like spinach, okra, kale, broccoli, watercress, prune juice, soy beans, almonds and fruits such as dried apricots, prunes and figs. However, iron from plant-

based sources is not easily absorbed by the body and it may be good to consider taking an iron supplement if your levels are low. VITAMIN B12 Vitamin B12 is a vital nutrient for hair growth. It is not in vegetables or plants but can be found in milk and eggs. For vegans, there are many good soy milks and cereals fortified with B12 that can be chosen from. Supplements for Vitamin B12 can also be considered. SUPPLEMENTS It can be difficult to have a balanced diet at all times, especially with a vegetarian diet, and this is when supplements are helpful. Vegetarian diets usually lack in calcium, iron, protein, zinc and vitamins D, B12 and B6. However, it is crucial to choose the right combination and be careful not to take too much of any supplement. For example, excessive amounts of vitamin A can cause hair loss. Blood tests are helpful indicators of levels of iron, zinc or B12.

CHECKLIST • Everyone use the potty

• Grab water and snacks • Everyone must wear shoes • Feed the fish

M

aybe it’s not like that for everyone but I feel like every time we leave the house I’m going through this routine checklist. We had a staycation this sweaty summer in the U.A.E. We spent our days wandering around Dubai or Abu Dhabi finding cheap and easy things to do or eat. Each trip was met with surprises like forgetting to bring the “blanky” or not bringing snacks for the car ride. Sometimes, I’m grateful they are actually wearing clothes in public. Each trip gave me a mental note to consider for the next out the door experience. My checklist has gotten a little bit bigger each time. I know you hardened disciplined parents think, oh they can just do without this or that. That’s fine on a short trip but

16

The Source

an hour and a half in the car with kids fussing about what they forgot brings stress. I need to be at peace on a long journey so my family will enjoy their day trip into the big city. Of course we could throw an iPad in their laps but I actually want my kids talking, playing, and asking questions (minimum of three per half hour). Long car trips are opportunities for important family discussions. Summer is like Al Ain traffic when a driver needs to exit his vehicle to meet a friend in the road; it is coming to a sudden screeching stop! My checklist is about to fly out the window and a new one will begin. If you are anything like me, you learn things the hard way. I’ve sent my 7 and 3yr old girls out the door wearing each other’s clothes. They have gone out with shirts and pants on backwards and underwear may be optional. My stress level went down when I decided to teach independence. Mismatched or not, our kids now dress themselves. They are early risers so they get up, get their own juice, and often fix their own breakfast (that

we leave out) while waiting quietly for their parents to get up and start the checklist for school. I home school my girls but yes, we have a checklist to follow. Routine is critical. Many of you are getting the kids ready for a bus or car pool. If you don’t have a checklist you are probably lucky to get your kid sent off properly each day. I’m a visual guy so I have created my checklist electronically and it’s open and ready every morning. The strict checklist is good for my kids because by October, the kids take charge and do things without command. That is a beautiful thing. If you have a wife trying to get herself ready for a job then you both will benefit. Print out a checklist or creatively post one in the house. Some of you already do this with daily chores. Make a list and check it twice! Enjoy this coming school year and be prepared to kick those kids out the door with confidence knowing that everyone has got everything in the right place.

A heart healthy diet

H

eart disease affects millions of people and is one of the leading causes of death. There are many ways that you can improve the health of your heart, no matter what your risk. A heart healthy diet, in combination w i t h medicine, c a n have powerful effects. Here are some tips to help you:

CUT THE FAT: Not all fat is bad but saturated and trans fats both raise LDL cholesterol, which is not what you want. The main sources of saturated fat include red meat, processed meat and full fat dairy products. Trans fat is in partially hydrogenated oil and turns up in many baked and fried foods. You can control this by allowing yourself 7 percent or less of your total daily calories to come from saturated fat. Count how many grams of saturated fat you eat in a day, multiply by nine and it will show how many calories you are getting from it. Trans fat should be reduced to zero. SWITCH YOUR DIET: You may love those double cheeseburgers but there are many delicious heart smart alternatives available. One of the best cardio diets is the Mediterranean diet. This is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, seafood and healthy fats. This diet is low in

20

The Source

LDL cholesterol and even reduces the risk of developing diabetes and inflammation.

ADD BEANS TO IT: Beans are a super food packed with LDL reducing fiber, vitamins and minerals that also reduce your blood pressure. They are a great lean plant based protein source to replace the meat in your dishes as well as an ideal antioxidant.

HDL. It has compounds that keep your arteries healthy. If you’re cooking with olive oil, just be sure to heat it below its smoke point: 310° F for extra virgin olive oil and 375° F for virgin olive oil. Higher heat can cause the oil to break down into free radicals, which only contribute to more cell damage. Simply drizzle some on whole wheat pasta or a delicious salad vinaigrette. EAT NUTS: A palm full of unsalted nuts helps to reduce LDL cholesterol and inflammation and they are rich in antioxidants while providing a great source of protein. You can enjoy them alone or in salads for extra crunch.

EAT MORE FISH: Fish is an excellent source of protein. Salmon, tuna, halibut and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which have many benefits. Shrimp are high in cholesterol and breaded or fried fish have a lot of bad fat and calories; avoid these as much as possible and instead broil and grill. ADD OLIVE OIL: Olive oil increases the good cholesterol;

GO WHOLE: Fewer processed foods will help reduce your blood pressure and blood sugar. Both are crucial to your overall heart health. Pick fruits and vegetables that provide much needed fiber. Eat a wide variety of colours to increase your nutrient intake. Choose brown rice, whole grain bread and pastas because these are gentler on your blood sugar and prevent sudden spikes. Reduce the salt you consume. More than 75 percent of our sodium consumption comes from processed foods and meals at restaurants. Get in the habit of cooking at home with fresh, whole foods as much as possible using spices such as turmeric and oregano that also have heartprotecting compounds. Follow this simple advice and start eating yourself back to a healthy heart. Bon Appetite!

Good bye Vacation

Hello Reality!

E

ven after a restful vacation, the return to real life can be jarring. There’s not much to love about returning home from a great vacation, aside from reuniting with the family pet. If you find you have a hard time getting back into the swing of things after time away, take a look at some tips we found that could help you out. BUILD IN AN EXTRA DAY (OR TWO) If possible, arrange your schedule so you head back to work a couple of days after you actually arrive home from your vacation, wired.com suggests the extra time will let you catch up on rest, do some laundry and mentally adjust to being back in the real world. END WELL Unpack as soon as you return, or that suitcase full of dirty laundry will haunt you. Once I've put everything away, I like to go through my photos and souvenirs while the memories are still fresh. It reminds me what was so wonderful about a vacation and helps me savor the experience. It also makes me happy to wrap and give out the gifts I've brought home. CHECK YOUR ACCOUNTS Once you’ve had a moment to catch your breath, take a look at your bank account and creditcard statements to get an idea of just how much you spent on your vacation. Be sure to keep an eye out for any unfamiliar transactions or charges. RECOVER FROM JET LAG If your vacation was in a different time zone, you can cope with jet lag by staying 24

hydrated and keeping your catnaps short – less than two hours. Also, don’t take in excessive amounts of caffeine, alcohol or tobacco since all can further complicate your sleep pattern. FOCUS ON DIET AND EXERCISE1 Going on vacation often means putting your diet and exercise routine on hold.

Why not try going vegetarian for a week to lose any pounds you packed on during your trip and to reduce your grocery bill. If hitting the gym full-force feels like too much, consider cutting the time off your first few post-vacation workouts. INDULGE YOURSELF The days after a vacation are exactly when you need to pamper yourself. The first night I'm back, I like to take a long, luxurious bath with candles, soothing music, and lavender salts. If you can, book a massage for a day or two after you return; it will help you prolong the relaxation. PLAY TOURIST So much of what we don't like about coming home is the routine that awaits us. Try to avoid falling into old ruts by eating at a new restaurant or going out with friends you haven't seen in a while. If you make an effort to see your city the way an outof-town guest might, you'll discover that your everyday life can have the excitement a trip does. Think about what you normally do on vacation, and weave some of that into your plans for the next few months: Go sightseeing; see a show; have drinks in a fancy hotel bar.

K C A B O T K R O W

MAKE A PLAN Nothing takes the sting out of the postvacation blues like fantasizing about another vacation. Even just plotting a weekend away can lift your spirits. Dive into the research as soon as you feel the doldrums setting in and rekindle the excitement of adventure!

Is your child a bully? By K.Radhakishan

Bullying is NOT cool! Parents should be teaching their kids this along with golden values like honesty, sharing and respect. Children who get bullied may learn to stand up for themselves, but if your child is the one terrorizing their school mates, they are in definite need of help! The way to solve any problem is to identity it. Watch for these signs to know if your child may be bullying others: • • • • • • • •

They frequently get into physical or verbal fights Have friends who bully others Are increasingly aggressive Get sent to the principal’s office or to detention frequently Have unexplained extra money or new belongings Blame others for their problems Don’t accept responsibility for their actions Are competitive and worry about their reputation or popularity

If the above signs fit, it’s time to act by talking to your child and if that doesn’t help, seeking professional help is essential.

Families can help prevent bullying by being proactive and applying some of the following actions: • Create a home environment of tolerance, where differences are celebrated and everyone feels valued. • Encourage your school to develop policies and procedures regarding bullying. • Ask for a bullying prevention program to be implemented in your school. • Intervene every time you witness bullying behavior. • If your child bullies others, provide predictable, consistent and matter-offact consequences. • Support the child who is bullied. Work with the school to provide your child with effective protection against retaliation. • Encourage bystanders to speak out against bullying behavior and to report it to adults. • Spend time with your child. All children need a daily, personal connection with parents, teachers and other caring adults.

On paper, asking your child about how they feel sounds good, but some parents take a different approach. One dad made his son stand in the middle of the street with a sign reading, "I am a bully! Honk if you hate bullies." The humiliation seemed to work, he told the Daily Mail. After receiving criticism for ‘bad parenting’, he himself stood in the street with his own sign: "I am not sorry! Honk 2 stop bullying." http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2443814/Honk-hatebullies-Father-makes-son-hold-sign-bullying-student.html

Many parents live in denial, refusing to believe that their very own bundle of joy could be capable of hurting another. The reality is that bullies exist and if their behavior is not modified at the right time, they are likely to face problems later on in life. According to www.stopbullying.gov, bullying can have the following effects on your child: • Abuse of alcohol and other drugs in adolescence and as adults. • Getting into fights, vandalizing property, and dropping out of school. • Engaging in early sexual activity. • Having criminal convictions and traffic citations as adults. • Being abusive toward their romantic partners, spouses, or children as adults. Being a parent translates into protecting your child’s future by offering guidance and support today! What’s worse than having your child bullied is having a child who is a bully. Your children represent everything you stand for. If your child is a bully, your morals, values and teachings may have failed; don’t blame the child. Accept the fact rather than denying the signs and help by teaching them compassion, understanding and above all, taking the necessary steps to stop bullying in its tracks!

city review

A walk back in Time By Komal R Lakhani

Have you ever wondered what people were like centuries ago? What kind of houses did they live in and better still, how on earth did they survive without satellite TV and the internet? Some answers are easy and for others we just have to use our imagination. This week’s city review does exactly that. Imagination along with some ancient artifacts will help you relive the lives of those who lived in this oasis city long before us. Hili archaeological park is a site which has remnants of a Bronze Age settlement (2,500-2,000 BC) that was excavated and restored in 1995. It is the source of some of the richest finds in the area, many of which are believed to be over 4,000 years old. These remains helped put Al Ain on the world heritage list. The circular tomb engraved with animal figures in the center of the park is not the only high point. As soon as I entered (this was my first time there) through the narrow gate I was mesmerized by my surroundings.

In an instant I was transported back in time walking in the shoes of one of my predecessors in an ancient civilization. Being a student of history I could go on and on about that, but this park offers much more. It boasts a lush landscape; children’s play area, a fountain and a perfect getaway from the noisy city. On a quiet afternoon you will be delighted by the songs of birds that fly around freely and the trees provide ample shade for a pleasant repose with family and friends. The place also provides ideal photo opportunities for both amateur and professional photographers and to really top things off, admission is free! So go on and explore this great city.

Legendary actor Robin Williams commits suicide

with someone who planned on killing himself.

Oscar winning actor Robin Williams committed suicide on August 11, 2014 at his home in California where his personal assistant discovered his body. The Marin County Deputy Coroner says Williams was at home alone Monday when he tried slashing his left wrist, but it only left "acute superficial cuts. He then took a belt, tied it around his neck and secured it between the closet door and door frame. Williams was in a seated position, slightly suspended with his right shoulder against the door.”

The officials say the actor had been receiving treatment for depression. Robin had been severely depressed and went to a Minnesota rehab facility last month. But Robin Williams did not plan on killing himself, in fact, hours before he hanged himself he was making plans for upcoming projects. A confidante of Robin's who spoke with him the day before his body was discovered told TMZ that they had a fairly lengthy discussion about several deals in the works and Robin was "completely engaged in the conversation." The source says Robin was asking lots of questions about the deals ... inconsistent

The confidante says there was nothing out of the ordinary during the conversation saying, "He [Robin] was unhappy which he often was, but it was nothing unusual." As for why Robin was unhappy, the source says Robin, like lots of other comedians, "lived in a dark place." TMZ also reports no one in Robin's life including his wife or personal assistant had any idea suicide was looming. The family believes whatever set Robin off on his fatal path occurred shortly before he took the drastic steps to end his life.Robin’s close friend Rob Schneider has suggested Parkinson’s drugs contributed to his actions. He tweeted “Now that we can talk about it, Robin Williams was on a drug treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s,” he wrote. “One of the side effects is suicide!”

Akshay Kumar’s 500th performance beats the odds August 9, 2014 marked Akshay Kumar’s 500th performance at the inaugural World Kabaddi League at London's O2 Arena. Despite torrential weather in the UK causing flash floods and the annual RideLondon charity bike run resulting in road closures and rerouting, Akshay Kumar remained the ultimate sportsman of the event, as he supported the organisers to make sure the show went on seamlessly. The ‘Khiladi Kumar’ set fans roaring with craze as he opened his act with a death defying aerial act, performing a series of summersaults midair before burning the floor with dynamic performances to some of his biggest musical hits, Shera Di Kaum and Party All Night, and to popular Punjabi chart busters such as Mundiyan To Bachke. India's heartthrob and handsome pin-up

melted hearts with his live performance of the scintillating romantic track Tu Hi To which has been recorded by him. An insider close to the event said: “Akshay Kumar is arguably the most thorough professional the Indian film industry has. He is loyal to his millions of fans, colleagues and producers and there has never been a day in his entire career where he has let them down. I have been in situations where high profile personalities have walked out and failed to perform in such scenarios

but against all odds, Akshay Kumar went full steam ahead with the show with an incredible performance that is among one of his most innovative. Akshay Kumar is arguably the true sportsman of the league." World Kabaddi Leagues first day tournament in London kept spectators engaged. What's more, Akshay Kumar's team Khalsa Warriors who won an impressive victory against Yo Yo Tigers, a team co-owned by Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh. The Source

A MELBOURNE

SKYDIVE By Amanda Reid

To skydive – verb: to jump/fall out of an airplane with a parachute attached. Why?

Y 32

The Source

ou don’t even have to want to jump particularly. Express a vague interest in the subject and your partner, friend, cousin, uncle will buy it for you for your birthday. This is how most people come to their first skydive.

Melbourne, Australia turned out to be a really good option. The beauty was in Port Phillip Bay, one of the most elegant bays in the world. Port Phillip has city skyscrapers at the top, then spreads widely on both sides with suburbs, yellow sandy beaches and cliffs reaching down almost 60km to the “Heads”, where two points (Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean) almost touch, keeping out the roaring ocean at the bottom of the continent.

I hadn’t thought about where, but in the end my hometown

Despite the city around it, Port Phillip Bay is a fairly clean, healthy and self-contained ecosystem, which includes dolphins,

underwater plant life and even some coral. These keep the shallow water clear and bright blue. Melbourne itself is at the head of the Bay, at the mouth of the Yarra River. It is a city of skyscrapers, famous sporting venues including the Australian Open Tennis, large parks and spacious grid-like suburban streets. The Victorian history can only be seen close-up though: the wrought-iron lacework terrace houses, the trams, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Exhibition Building of 1880 and the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens dating from the 1850s.

my world Then, Kris told me to expect a bounce. Sure enough he released the parachute and I had the feeling we were swiftly rising. In fact we were still falling, but relatively it seems quite the opposite. Then I could see what it was all about. The sweep of the bay and the city I knew so well was still far below me, curved like a wide-angle photo. But I wasn’t seeing it out a plane window. I was the plane!

Royal Exhibition Buildin Melbourne First building in Oz to be awarded UNESCO world heritage status. One of last remaining 19thC exhibition buildings. BEYOND WHERE? Now to the skydive! I followed my voucher’s instructions to a small portacabin next to the inner-city Elwood Yacht Club. “Skydive the Beach and Beyond” it said. Beyond where, I wondered? The instructors were a mix of young and old, male and female, but had in common the general relaxed, slightly casual state of reckless adventurers. Help! But sure enough, there was a safety video – most serious accidents are due to the reserve chute getting tangled in the first chute – a one in 100,000 chance apparently.

14,000 FEET UP The first one of us to go was nervous, but out they went. A minute later, Kris and I squatted on the edge of the plane’s doorway. I’m not sure if I jumped or was pushed, but there we went. Face down, limbs spread, through the clouds we rushed. Our 7,000 feet freefall lasted around 55 seconds, but felt like 10 minutes. The major sensation was the wind. Apparently we reached our terminal velocity of around 120 miles per hour within 12 seconds. If only the wind would stop, if only the clouds weren’t so damp!

The sun was out and the clouds now above us helped give some 3D perspective to the circular bay below. I could see the first parachutist below us, and two or three above. We circled like planes in a holding pattern for a lovely five or six minutes. I could see landmarks of the city, long stretches of yellow sand, coloured beach boxes at Brighton, the cliffs behind us on the peninsulas. I was beginning to relax and enjoy it, until I noticed the ground coming up fast. Where was our drop zone? Way over there! Kris manoeuvres us like a kite and points out my family waiting at the park. We stretch our legs out to avoid the most common injury – sprained ankles on landing. And run. The ground! It is a relief but I am too out of breath to say much. Finally I thank Kris and chat. He has another seven or eight jumps to do that day so must be off. Do I recommend it? Yes! Make sure you have beautiful scenery below. And wear goggles!

Nervous first-timers smiled at each other. “Is it your first skydive too?” “Have you done this before?” The one experienced fellow had jumped that very morning and was keen to go again. Heartened by this report, we put on our jumpsuits (lightweight blue coveralls, rather large and flappy, but it was strangely reassuring to be covered) and then our harnesses. A minibus took the eight of us to the local airfield for the upwards journey. We were all doing tandem jumps, that is, with an instructor attached to our back. He or she wears both the main parachute and the reserve so we are harnessed very tightly together. Alternatively, first-timers can do a “fixedline jump” where you are initially attached by a line to the plane, which then tears off and automatically opens the parachute. This requires a day of training first, and is normally done from around 3,000 feet. Our tandems are done from much higher. Our little tincan of a propeller plane rose at a steep angle to some 14,000 feet. The door was open the whole time, giving us a small taste of the breeze and temperature outside. I clung with my knees to the bench seat, while my backpack Kris murmured words of encouragement in my ears.

Did you know?

The Selfish Man and his Gold Coins Sam was a greedy and a selfish man who never hesitated in cheating others to earn money. He paid very low wages to his workers and deceived everyone. One day, he lost a bag containing 50 gold coins. He searched for it day and night but was unsuccessful. Soon after, a 10 year old girl told her father she found a small bag and it had 50 gold coins in it. Her father, who worked in Sam’s land, told her it was his chief’s money which he lost and would return the bag to him. The girl’s family was poor and the father could have kept the gold coins and hid the fact that they found them. But, he was so honest that he returned the coins to their owner. Sam who was extremely happy to get the coins back, decided to play a trick. He shouted at his worker, saying ‘There were 75 gold coins in this bag and you gave me only 50! Where are the other coins? You have stolen them!’ The worker was shocked to hear this and insisted that he gave back exactly what his daughter had found. Sam decided to take this issue to the court. The judge heard both sides. He asked the daughter and worker about the number of coins they found and they assured him that there were only 50! He cross-examined Sam and Sam replied, “Yes lord, I had 75 gold coins in my bag and they gave me only 50! They have stolen my 25 coins!” The judge asked, “Are you sure you had 75 coins?” Sam said yes. Then the judge passed judgment, “since Sam lost a bag of 75 gold coins and the bag found by the girl has only 50 coins it clearly leads me to belive that this was not Sam's bag. If anyone finds a bag of 75 gold coins, I would declare it to belong to Sam. Since there are no claims for the 50 coins, I order the girl and her father to take them as a token of appreciation for their honesty!” Moral of the Story: Honesty is rewarded and greed is punished!
