ou may have noticed that, I rarely write about the contents of the magazine in this sacred little space – of course, I’m flattering myself by believing that you all read my note. I much prefer having you read the contents page to guide you through this discovery and thereby avoid redundancy. But this is a very special issue that deserves some extra attention, and I will begin the pampering right here with my note!

Welcome to issue #81, a new and improved Source; we’re celebrating the addition of extra pages and are ecstatic about giving you more of your favourite community magazine. While Diana and I are busying ourselves with the Fitness 360 “just lose it” challenge, in an effort to shed unwanted fatty baggage, The Source is proud to have gained some weight! Over the next eight weeks, our very brave and fearless senior translator and associate Arabic editor, Diana Joudieh and I, have agreed to suffer the treadmills of Fitness 360 among other excruciating punishment dealt by our personal trainer Ken. We invite you to follow us on facebook and in the upcoming issues of The Source, as we embark on our exciting journey towards self improvement. In the last issue we published a special feature story introducing Sarah Wood, an energetic and highly inspired junior school teacher from Brighton College, who is now sharing her passion for education with the many readers in constant pursuit of a better education for their young and impressionable children. Get to know Sarah better in every issue of The Source as she answers your parenting posers. We are also excited about our new friends at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium and the entire gang at the Al Ain Club Investment Company; read all about what they are doing to “change the game” in our Al Majlis feature. Last but certainly not least, I want to remind everyone about the return of The Box Appeal. We had an outstanding response from our readers last year and this year, our partnership with the many kind souls at La Brioche, promises to make the Box Appeal 2014 the biggest and best ever! We ask you, once again, to support us in this very worthy cause and give back to the men who helped build this great country. “They built our cities brick by brick, let’s say thank you box by box!” Read all about the little box with a big difference in our Social & Community Forum and get ready to “give until it heals!”

ASK THE TEACHER

Dear Sarah, My eldest child has just started KG here in Al Ain. I read in her introductory newsletter that she will have weekly homework. As my child has just turned 4, I feel that she is too young to fulfil this requirement. What are your thoughts on this? From, A mother of three little ones

Dear parent, If homework is stressful, boring, tiring or involves accelerating formal reading and writing at the expense of language, then it is inappropriate for a four year old child. In fact, it is a waste of time that will only disengage your child and spoil precious family time. If, however, the homework aims to develop social and oral skills by using engaging and exciting methods, it can be of great benefit to a four year old. The best homework for such a youngster will range from speaking in the family home, poetry and songs to listening to good quality children’s literature.

Name: HUNTER Male medium sized puppy "Hunter is looking for his forever home! He is great with children and other dogs. He likes to chase cats and birds. He is 8 months old. He has had a docked tail ever since he was rescued as a baby. His foster mum says: "He is an adorable, adorable dog; loyal, tender, playful, intelligent and obedient. He is social with other dogs, not at all aggressive, a wonderful guard dog, only barks when people he doesn't know enter the room/ garden alone. I really hope he finds a home that deserves him soon." House and toilet trained. He may occasionally try to nibble on your plants but it’s quite easy to train a dog. Vaccinated, microchipped, and will be neutered soon. Email animal.action@ hotmail.com if you would like to adopt Hunter.

Parents are often reassured by schools that send home lots of homework – beware! The Head Master of Britain’s highest performing school, Brighton College UK, actually reduced the amount of

Wacky World Jumbo Jet-Sized 'Fatberg' Threatened Homes A giant "fatberg" the length of a Boeing 747 jet has been removed from a sewer in west London. It took Thames Water workers a week to clear the foul-smelling blockage from an 80-metre stretch of Shepherd's Bush Road. The mass of festering food fat mixed with wet wipes and sanitary products threatened to send raw sewage spurting into nearby homes. High-powered water jets were used to break up the congealed mass so that wastewater could start passing through the sewer again. Dave Dennis, Thames Water sewer operations manager, said most fatbergs are formed by people pouring cooking oil down the drain and flushing wet wipes down the toilet. "The sewers serve an important purpose - they are not an abyss for household rubbish," he said.

UAEU Launches the First Free Legal Advice Clinic in the UAE United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) recently launched a new legal clinic under the auspices of the Deanship of the College of Law. The university is using this advisory clinic to offer legal advice and a consultancy service to both students and the local community free of charge. The Dean of the College of Law, Dr. Mohammed Hassan Ali, stressed that the launch of this legal clinic is part of His Excellency, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan’s vision. As Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and also the university Chancellor, His Excellency is keen to provide high quality services to the local community. This is in line with UAEU’s vision of providing leadership and also promoting excellence in higher education and scientific research on both a regional and global level. Such services also help to strengthen the university’s role in transferring knowledge and skills to the community. Dr. Mohammed Hassan Ali went on to highlight that the establishment of such legal clinics is common in law schools throughout the world. This provides a free advisory service to the community and is

one of the main objectives of UAEU. The legal clinic serves as a center of excellence for both legal education and community service, as it is first and foremost concerned with teaching students in dealing with real life issues where they can offer legal advice under the supervision of the law faculty.

assisted in reviewing and drafting their advice by faculty members. The legal clinic also trains students in how to prepare drafted notes, legal papers and contracts or agreements regarding friendly settlements or legal problems. This all prepares future graduates to be leaders in their field.

The Assistant Dean for Professional Development in the College of Law, Dr. Abdullah Al Khatib, who serves as the supervisor of the legal clinic, enumerated the various services provided by the clinic. This includes the provision of legal advice by students to clients. The law students are

Dr. Al-Khatib further added that the legal clinic does not supply legal opinions on matters of belief or worship. Their advice is limited to family relationships and transactions. Prospective clients can contact the clinic’s supervisory committee by telephone, or email, to schedule an appointment.

UAE Residents stressed over meeting their monthly obligations More than a quarter of respondents polled recently by compareit4me.com, a UAEbased finance comparison website, have admitted to missing a payment or making a late payment on their existing loans.

their recovery from the 2008 recession. Incidentally, credit ratings agency Standard & Poor’s even forecast a 10% to 12% nominal growth in UAE personal credit in 2014 and 2015.

The online survey, conducted between July and August 2014, found that 5.8% of the respondents have often defaulted on their loans, while 19.3% have missed or made a late payment once or twice in the last 12 months.

“Consumers need to be proactive when it comes to managing debt if financial obligations become a struggle,” Richards said. “Consumers need to act fast to find more manageable options.”

“The results of this year’s financial survey are quite concerning as more than one in four of those polled also described their monthly debt repayments as ‘stressful’,” said Jon Richards, CEO of compareit4me. com. Around 77% of respondents confirmed that they have some form of debt with UAE banks, with credit cards (54.7%) topping the list, followed by personal loans (43.6%), car loans (12.6%) and mortgages (4.1%). The survey reflects the steady uptrend in consumer lending as UAE banks continue 10

“Refinancing debts should be the first thing people look into: as the banks compete with each other, rates inevitably come down leading to cheaper credit. If you have a loan which is over 12 months old, it is likely you will be able to get a better rate today, so make sure you look into it. Consumers also need to look at consolidating debts wherever possible, such as credit cards for example which have a much higher interest rate than a personal loan. This alone could save you thousands, particularly if you only make the minimum payment each month,” he said.

new models will have a feature called reachability. With two light taps of the home screen button, the icons, controls and content on the top half of the screen snap to the bottom, so you can reach them with the same hand. Once you make your selection, everything snaps back to the top. The iPhone 6 Plus also has new horizontal layouts to take advantage of the larger size. On the Plus, horizontal viewing extends to the home screen, and apps will be able to arrange content in two columns. When texting, for instance, contacts appear on the left and messages appear on the right. Both phones come with an 8MP rear camera and 1.2MP front camera, 64-bit A8 chip, iOS8 and will be available in Silver, Gold, Space Grey

IPHONE 6 SERIES IS HERE AND ALONG WITH IT THE MUCH AWAITED APPLE WATCH Apple's new 4.7-inch iPhone 6 (129 grams) and 5.5-inch (172 grams) iPhone 6 Plus are both larger than the current 4-inch models. They neutralise a key advantage Android phones have had: size.

NFC Apple has finally introduced NFC (Near field communication) to their devices and have gone a step further to build an entire mobile payment system around it. Apple Pay, a US-only system at launch, works with the Passbook app on your phone, and independently as well, to let you buy

goods and services with a single touch of the phone. A handy feature incorporating the camera will add new credit card details to Passbook, saving you the typing time.

APPLE WATCH The Apple Watch will come in two sizes and three distinct collections, including a sport edition and an upscale line coated in 18-karat gold. All the watches have flexible, Retina-quality touchscreen displays (with laminated crystal of sapphire), a "digital crown" dial, infrared LEDs and photo diodes that take your pulse and "turn movement into data." Apple calls it a "comprehensive health and fitness device. The watch runs on a brand-new S1 processor, is equipped with a gyro-accelerometer and can piggyback off the Wi-Fi and GPS on your phone. It also has its own operating system. The watch will take dictation, and offer very precise synchronized time, to plus or minus 50 milliseconds. The iWatch also has NFC and could make mobile payments and act as a digital key to open a smart lock on a front door at home.

And Apple managed to make its new phones thinner, with edges that are curved and fit nicely in the hands. The back will now be made of aluminium and feel more like an iPad. To

Samsung launches Galaxy Note 4 and unexpected Galaxy Note Edge

The metal running around the edge on the leather finish back cover not only looks good but provides strength. It's got a Quad HD resolution, 1600 x 2560, and uses Samsung's Super AMOLED technology. It includes the fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor. It also has 4G LTE (Cat 6) support, an IR blaster, NFC, 11ac Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 4.1 and MHL 3.0.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has quad HD 5.7-inch display, 16MP camera, faster Snapdragon 805 chip (hands-on) The new Galaxy Note 4 features a crisper, 5.7-inch display in a metal frame, reflecting Samsung’s latest design strategy to keep pace with rivals including Apple Inc, which is expected to launch its first large-screen phones next week. The new model offers accessories designed to attract gamers and an improved pen stylus and related software as a handwriting alternative to typing on a keyboard. It boasts easier to use multi-tasking features that take advantage of its large screen.

Galaxy Note Edge Despite its new breed of screen tech, the Note Edge is actually thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Note 4. The device is 8.3 mm thick and 174 g but it feels a lot lighter than it actually is.

At the moment, the curved section is mainly about providing information – even if the main part of the screen is underneath a cover. It can show various different things from time and weather to stock prices and football scores. It also has app icons which frees up space on the main part of the display. There are additional settings for the edge screen. It comes with Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz interface over the top.

The Source

By Farid Nouisser

And just to prove to you how easy it can be – given the work and dedication – The Source is offering up two of their valiant staff members to take on the infamous Fitness 360 “just lose it” challenge. The ultimate goal is to achieve improved personal fitness catered to the individual’s set target. Diana and I were ideal candidates and we began with an in-body analysis assessment and a general fitness assessment done in club on the first day of the challenge. Our trainer, Ken, who spent a great deal of time assessing our initial physical condition and our individual goals, was set to monitor our progress over the course of the challenge. And so begins the battle and discovery of how much sweat and strain we are willing to take for eight weeks, after which we will be judged on our overall performance, decreased fat percentage, fitness level and increased fitness score.

coverstory

To make this weight loss journey less intimidating, Ken will be providing expert guidance along every step of the journey, encouraging us to meet our specific fitness goals. During the course of the challenge, our diet will be regulated along with routinely monitored progress, while charting the best exercise routine based on our respective body statistics. All right then, having said all this, the only thing left to do was start; and start we did!

Ken did warn us in advance, that there would be times of cursing and resentment, and it was during these harsh moments that our focus should remain on the individual goals we had set for ourselves. His job was, first and foremost, to have us realize our goals – friendship would come after the workout! He wasn’t kidding, and the first three days we acquainted ourselves with routines and apparatus that made me painfully aware of

muscle groups I had no idea existed and quite frankly, wished I’d never met. Ken, of course, reassured us that we would get used to them and eventually they would become new found friends. After day 3 of the challenge, I needed the help of my 4 year old to get my socks and shoes on because proper movement of my limbs was no longer a luxury I could take for granted! I even wondered if it was a good Idea to drive since steering had become a bit of a problem and I wasn’t aware of a route I could take to work that was free of the dreaded roundabout! Wow! What was going on? Now, I am being extremely dramatic – a habit of mine – and although there were some early growing pains, there was also a miraculous realization that this stuff was really working! Seriously, three workouts later and I started noticing results, not to mention a renewed love for Ken and the gym! Our challenge will be going on for the next eight weeks and we encourage you to follow us in each issue of The Source and on our facebook page, to marvel at our accomplishments and witness the emerging of Al Ain’s latest, greatest super fit media moguls – we hope! The best part is that after having followed along and witnessed our personal success,

Fitness 360 plans to extend another “just lose it” opportunity to a couple of our very lucky Source readers. That’s right, just follow along, discover how you too can win this exciting opportunity and before you know it, you’ll be joining Diana and myself strolling along the many beaches of our lovely country sporting pride and perhaps even a brand new speedo! We will keep you updated on both our victories and agonies of defeat over the next few issues of The Source. If by any chance, you are feeling the urge to make a positive fitness change in your life right now, then make haste and get down to Fitness 360 at Al Foah Mall, meet with Ken or any of the other awesome staff and get ready to join us in making a difference in your life! WOMEN and Financial Planning “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery

T

he new-age urban woman knows what she wants to achieve. And in present times, financial planning is one of the most important steps to fulfill these aspirations. Indeed, for women, managing finances is not just limited to dayto-day money matters or maintaining the monthly household budget anymore, but it is also increasingly about self-reliance and independence. We might even make changes in our lives such as taking a career break to pursue higher education or a hobby or relocating after marriage or starting a family. Does that mean we become financially vulnerable? Well, with a good amount of planning, it doesn’t have to be so. To this end, I am listing some important strategies that would go a long way in helping you manage your finances. BE AN EARLY BIRD Assume you started investing Dhs 1,000 every month from the age of 25 for an annual interest rate of 7%; you would have set aside Dhs 2.6 million by the time you reached 65. On the other hand, if you started at 45 years and invested twice as much (Dhs 2000) every month at the same rate, you would manage to gain just about Dhs 1.1 million at 65. This significant difference can be attributed to the power of compounding interest. So, no matter how little, you must start saving as early as you possibly can.

STRICTLY FOLLOW BUDGETING Whether you’re living on a steady income or inheritance, tracking all of your income and expenditures will help you to determine whether you could cut down on any wasteful expenditures, improve your savings further or repay any debts sooner. Notably, we can every now and then, be impulsively driven when it comes to shopping in particular. However, limiting your monthly spending within the amount budgeted, could in fact, help to keep you in check. MAKING MONEY WORK Investing is basically the idea of making your money work for you. Keeping money stowed in your savings account, although risk-free, will not earn you healthy returns and if the rate of inflation is higher than the interest rate, your money loses value. Hence, it is vital to assess your risk appetite and accordingly invest in return-yielding instruments like stocks, bonds, commodities or property. To lower your risks, diversifying your investments is just as important as investing itself. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED No matter how smooth sailing we might want our lives to be, our plans may occasionally hit stumbling blocks. This could

be for instance, a loss of income or medical emergency or even a car break-down or house repairs. Therefore, it is imperative to set aside an emergency fund that can cover about 4 to 6 months of your living expenses to meet such contingencies. INSURE WELL Remember not to compromise on your insurance needs. Adequate life and health insurance are key in protecting yourself and your family from financial insecurity and safeguarding your family’s future. Effective financial management not only helps pay your bills on time or incur any unforeseen expenditures, but also helps to achieve your long term goals like retirement savings, buying property or traveling the world. So in case you haven’t won the lottery yet, I’d say ‘start your planning already’. Feel free to get in touch with me at bhupali.g@gmail.com

stuff for men

PEACE of mind

D

o you ever feel like what you want is never enough? This summer we wanted a lot and we shared that excitement with our kids. My wife wanted to travel back to the states. I wanted to go on a cruise. We both thought we should take a trip to Oman. None of that ever happened, but something better did. I don’t know if fathers are typically the money managers of the house. I assumed the role but monthly, we look at our budget and make final decisions together. My point is, many of us want more than we are getting. Contentment is not our strength and we have a hard time keeping up with our neighbors who take these awesome trips every holiday. Today, we can proudly proclaim to be debt free. I thought I’d share with you a few areas of life that have

20

The Source

given us peace of mind and peace in our marriage.

BUDGET Years ago, I would have been fired from any company if I managed their money the way I managed mine. I worked three jobs and didn’t know how much money was coming in or how much was going out. Men, someone needs to step up! Record every expense, right down to the cat getting a new toy. If you are married, work together with your spouse. Money issues are the number two killer of marriages. If your woman has no interest, then create a budget and pin it up somewhere. Budgeting is writing down what you are taking in and what you expect to spend each pay period. Our balance is 0AED each month. We know exactly where every dirham is going. SACRIFICE If you haven’t asked your family to sacrifice anything, you are probably not doing it right. The kids sign up for everything, the wife has booked a trip to Greece, and you

are signing up for the gym. There is a great lesson to be learned when you can say to and show the family, we need to make a sacrifice this month, this winter, or for the next year. Maybe you are saving for a car, a big trip, or you want to cut the debt in half. Sacrifices have to be made and someone has to be the bad guy. Teach the family that if they want something, they need to save for it and pay in cash. If you need a credit card, then you can’t afford it. SANITY If budgeting is going well, then somewhere between the Al Ain Distribution bill and school expenses, can be your sanity. My wife and I put date night money in an envelope each month as a reward for being outstanding parents. And I buy a can of tennis balls for a little sanity on the court. We are always working out the kinks and still dealing with emergencies, but we have a greater peace of mind these days and so will you, once you learn to effectively manage your money!

OLIVE OIL SUPER FOOD

M

ost of our dietary fats come from animal fats and seed oils, to name a few. The healthiest fat is extra virgin olive oil. This main staple of the Mediterranean diet is a traditional fat and is vital to some of the world’s

healthiest populations.

Research on extra virgin olive oil has revealed powerful health benefits associated with its consumption. The right type of olive oil is the most important thing to consider in your diet. The best type is extra virgin olive oil because it is extracted using natural methods. It has a distinctive taste and is very high in antioxidants – the main reason for its wonderful properties. Other olive oils such as regular, refined or light types are available but these have been extracted using solvents, heat treated and even diluted with cheaper vegetable oils. This is why extra virgin olive oil is the best and healthiest type. Olive oil is very high in monounsaturated fats and contains a modest amount of vitamins E and K. True extra virgin olive oil is loaded with antioxidants, some of which have powerful health benefits. Olive oil is famous for having antiinflammatory benefits. Chronic inflammation

ASK THE DR. "Hi Doctor, I know that passing gas is natural, but why does it stink? Is there a way to reduce the amount of gas my body releases? I have also heard eating certain kinds of foods reduce the odour; is that true?" Dear reader, Thanks for your question. Flatulence is a normal part of the body's physiology. In fact it is normal to pass gas 10-20 times 24

plays a role in many diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. One of the greatest benefits of olive oil is its ability to counteract inflammation. The most prominent fatty acid in olive oil appears to be oleic acid and oleocanthal; both clearly reducing inflammation and even providing pain relief. Eating plenty of extra virgin olive oil may help prevent damage due to chronic inflammation and reduce the risk of various inflammatory diseases. Heart disease and stroke are the most common causes of death the world over, but are less prevalent in areas such as the Mediterranean because of olive oil. This observation created an increased interest in the Mediterranean Diet. The diet helps prevent heart diseases and reduces death due to strokes and heart attacks by 30%.

plaques in certain neurons of the brain. Animal studies show that olive oil can help reduce these plaques. The Mediterranean diet also improves brain function and prevents deterioration. Olive oil is a “superfood” and an excellent dietary choice. Look for extra virgin olive oil that hasn’t been diluted with cheaper oils. The benefits of this wonderful fat are enormous and including it in your diet is highly recommended!

Olive oil protects the heart by reducing inflammation and harmful cholesterol in the blood. It helps improve the lining of blood vessels, prevents unwanted blood clotting and lowers harmful blood pressure. All this helps to reduce the risk of suffering a stroke or heart attack. Cancer is often linked to oxidative damage resulting from free radicals. Since extra virgin olive oil is rich in antioxidants, it reduces oxidative damage and thus helps prevent cancer. Alzheimer’s disease is the world’s most common neurodegenerative disease and features a buildup of protein tangles called beta amyloid

Changing the game…

I

n this issue of The Source, we are delighted to bring you another glimpse of Al Ain’s iconic Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium. We met with three charming gentlemen charged with the Business Development, Facilities Management and Venue and General Services Management of this one of a kind facility. The Source Team had their game hats on for an awesome afternoon with Rashed Abdulla, Waleed Al Hosani and Khaled Al Darei, who received us in the comfort of a stunning corporate box to explain in great detail the operations and unique features of Al Ain’s latest, greatest landmark.

By Farid Nouisser

As magnificent as this stadium is, was it necessary to build with two other stadiums already here? Khaled - “Absolutely; in recent years, the Al Ain FC has exploded in popularity and quickly become the best and favourite team in the region and with increased popularity comes a much bigger fan base. Al Ain needed a stadium that would satisfy this growth and at the same time change the way people view games. This facility is equipped with state of the art amenities including improved concession stands, prayer rooms and handicapped sections that allow for convenient and comfortable viewing in the dignified manner that should be offered to the handicapped.” What volume of spectators has the

stadium brought in during this first year of operation? Rashed - “We can accommodate a crowd of 25,000 and have thus far managed to achieve an average of 8,000 which is 2030 percent higher than last season. Our goal in the very near future is to bring these numbers up to a 10,000 average which we believe can be achieved quickly.” What impact do you believe Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium will have on our city? Waleed - “It has already become a huge attraction and will continue to bring great things to the Garden City. It is important to remember that there is much more than just a stadium here. We have created a major destination for the entire UAE with

Khaled a planned surrounding development that offers an environment and lifestyle catering to every age group in our unique cultural surrounding.” Obviously, this is the new home of the Al Ain FC, but what other functions are planned here? Waleed – “The sky is the limit when it comes to the different opportunities this facility will bring to Al Ain. Along with the 25 Al Ain FC games already scheduled from September – May, there are a multitude of other shows, concerts and festivals being considered. To add to our versatility, we are equipped with amazing banquet facilities for corporate and private functions of all sizes.

the old records for female attendance away and our goal is to further increase their presence moving into the future.” In what other ways is Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium improving the overall spectator experience?

Rashed Does the stadium require a huge number of staff members to operate? Khaled -“This high tech stadium has achieved extremely high ratings from the UPC (Urban Planning Commission) and can operate on a day in day out basis with only 32 people on staff. During a match we operate with 500 persons and at full capacity we would require a team of 700 individuals. This of course includes government entities such as the police and traffic authorities. We would like to thank these organizations as well as the TCA for their unwavering support in ensuring that our events are successful and first and foremost safe! We have an extremely well equipped event control room, where the police, civil defense and security can control and monitor events both inside and outside the stadium. Safety is our first priority and our facility has become a benchmark, unrivalled in its capacity for security and effective crowd management – not bad for a first year of operation!”

Waleed – “From a physical perspective, this stadium offers a spectacular, up close and personal view of the action regardless of where one is seated. Its high tech design is environmentally friendly and in spite of the perception of being enclosed, the air circulation and unique shading, make for a comfortable visit anywhere in the stadium during any season or time of day. I should also mention that this is the first stadium in the UAE to introduce online ticket booking, with numbered seats as opposed to the old first come first serve system. We are doing everything to ensure your experience from booking to parking and reaching your seat is as smooth a transition as possible. We have even gone the extra mile to include free Wi-Fi for our guests – everyone is a VIP here! We thanked the three ambassadors of Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium for their time and hospitality and they insisted that we return for an event to see the surroundings come to life – we can’t wait!

Are you getting much support from the women for Al Ain FC games? Rashed – “I’m glad you asked; we are very interested in garnering the support of female spectators and our improved stadium facilities are certainly making a difference. We have a special box for Sheikhas as well as segregated female seating, but encourage the women to sit wherever they wish. We have already blown

The importance of

family traditions

H

ave you ever reminisced about your childhood days; playing all evening with your cousins, the family trip to the beach each summer, weekend backyard barbecues, baking with mom or those special Sunday breakfasts? Most of our happiest c h i l d h o o d memories are likely to have involved some type of family tradition. Traditions are the foundation of strong family bonds. Today’s family life looks a lot different than it did two or three decades ago.

memories. For many, the holidays have shifted from meaningful time spent together to trying to balance the stresses of work while engaging the kids in a million different activities to keep them busy.

even cooking together, can become part of a daily or weekly routine. These are some of the little things your children will remember as they grow older, and hopefully pass onto their children.

Many of us miss the little traditions that exemplified our childhood. I remember when I was a kid, all my cousins would gather to play hide and seek or badminton during the warm summer days. In addition, we used to have big family dinners every Sunday at the same restaurant. Family traditions do not have to be complex, timeconsuming, or even expensive in order to have great impact. Nor do we have to wait for a holiday to kick start one. Whether it’s a family reunion once a year or movie night once a week, establishing routine is a great way to bond with the family.

If an existing tradition starts to lose its appeal, then create a new one like board game night! Getting the entire family excited and involved in identifying a new activity is an important way to establish a tradition with meaning. Once these activities are chosen, work on building them into a ritual that can be enhanced with certain foods like tacos, or popcorn.

As families become more and more disconnected due to hectic schedules, there seems to be less time to enjoy the simple traditions that were once a vital part of everyday family life. Simple rituals such as a weekend family outing, playing games or even family dinners are becoming distant

There are many small ways to introduce traditions into our daily lives. Eating dinner together as a family, going for an evening walk, watching a classic movie that everyone likes, reading a bedtime story, or

Kids love and thrive on traditions because they cultivate a sense of belonging and security. Making traditions a priority in family life is important as well as fun. By doing so, our kids will not only learn to appreciate and look forward to the time they spend with family members, but also develop a full understanding of the meaning of the word ‘family’.

Martha Stewart Slams Leading Hollywood ladies in an Interview The lifestyle expert is getting plenty of attention for her new interview where she throws some serious shade at a few Hollywood starlets. In Net-A-Porter's newest Porter magazine issue, Stewart has strong words for Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow and her projects away from the big screen. "She just needs to be quiet—she's a movie star," Stewart says in the issue. "If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn't be trying to be Martha Stewart." Paltrow's rep declined to comment. And what about Blake Lively? The actress recently launched Preserve, a website composed of articles, recipes and fashion spreads. It's also part e-commerce with a Lively-curated collection of products for sale including jewellery, vases, and vegan hot fudge. Stewart appears to have some doubts that Mrs. Ryan Reynolds has the passion to carry on the lifestyle website. "I had the passion," she explains. "Every entrepreneur talks

about the passion you have for your work, and I think that's what's missing with a lot of women in business." Recently, Stewart told the Huffington Post that comparing Lively to herself was "stupid" and that Lively should "be an actress" instead. Lively took the feedback very well. "I'm doing something totally different so now I sort of have two careers going on and it'll be interesting to see how it all pans out," she exclusively told E! News in response to Stewart's feedback. "But really what it is, is I have two passions."What may come as the biggest surprise to readers is Stewart's harsh words for Taylor Schilling. After watching Orange Is the New Black and serving time in prison herself, Stewart thinks the show is a bit overhyped. "They could have done it so much better," she said. "That girl [Schilling] is not good enough to be the lead actress." Schilling received a 2014 Emmy nomination for her performance in this popular Netflix series.

Rekha not Happy with Khubsoorat remake It has been reported that Rekha is not happy with the ‘remake’ of her film Khubsoorat, starring Sonam Kapoor. But she seems to have made her peace with it now. It is learnt that Rekha has requested Ashok Thakeria and Indra Kumar, the producers of her next film, Super Nani to request Anil Kapoor to attach her film’s trailer to his Khoobsurat, which releases next week. It’s an inspired idea. Khubsoorat was her film three decades ago, and now her new films’ promo will be released along with a film bearing the same title. But one wonders why the actress didn’t pick up the phone and call Anil directly. It is a known fact that she shares a close friendship with Anil and his wife Sunita. A source close to the Kapoors, says,

“Rekha has been watching the trailers of Khoobsurat, asking Rhea when she will show her the film as she is emotionally attached to the remake.”Rhea confirms, “We are attaching the trailer of Super Nani and are very excited and happy to do that. It’s as if everything has come full circle — Rekhaji had acted in the original Khubsoorat and now, her trailer will be attached to our Khoobsurat.”

Deepika lashes out against a ‘leading daily’ While everyone has been praising Deepika Padukone performance in her latest release Finding Fanny, a ‘leading’ daily used another stunt to grab eyeballs. On September 14, this ‘leading’ newspaper posted an old video on their online portal of the heroine which showed a bit of her cleavage. Other female actors in similar videos were also featured in the same article. All of which didn’t go well with Deepika and she got furious and lashed out at the ‘leading’ daily. Deepika tweeted, “Supposedly India’s ‘LEADING’ newspaper and this is ‘NEWS’!!??”. She attached a snap of the article along with this tweet and further elaborated on her anger by tweeting, “YES!I am a Woman.I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem!!??Dont talk about Woman’s Empowerment when YOU don’t know how to RESPECT Women!” Many celebs have retweeted Deepika’s tweet and expressed their support in favour of her. This was followed by defensive tweet from the daily that carried the offensive photograph of the Finding Fanny star. TOI Entertainment tweeted “@ deepikapadukone , It's a compliment! You look so great that we want to make sure everyone knew! :) The Source

The District

hen direct flights from the UAE to Washington DC were announced, we put the US capital on our radar. Formally the District of Columbia, DC is a city familiar to anyone who watches the news, or at least ‘West Wing’, and has fascinated me since my teenage years. When I first visited, more than 20 years ago, I touched down just as a snowstorm was hitting the east coast. My American boyfriend (now husband) picked me up in the near white-out conditions and navigated the slippery, traffic-choked roads back to the Watergate building – a journey I’d later find out was his first solo drive. This time, we arrived with our two boys in tow, in the middle of summer. A heat advisory on the first day saw us steering the children off the National Mall (not a UAEstyle shopping mall, but the strip of green space between the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building) before they melted and into the wonderful Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (more of which later). The temperature continued to nudge the mid-90s for much of our visit, but whatever the season, the effect DC has on visitors is the same: the epicentre of power, and the city in which the machines of politics grind, Washington is memorable for its wide boulevards, elegant buildings and knockout symbols of US rule. 34

National Air and Space museum in Washington holds the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world Designed by a Parisian, the version of the capital you see – comprising marble, museums and historic monuments – may stand in stark contrast to the run-down urban parts you don’t see, but you can’t fail to be inspired by the grandeur and prettiness of DC’s heart. Washington DC is also the only American city that does not allow skyscrapers, and its grid system layout means it’s both fairly easy to navigate and accessible. Determined to find the White House, we parked nearby and walked a few blocks until we stumbled upon it. From a distance, I even had to look twice to be sure I was admiring the right home: The White House may host the President, but it’s not huge or shouty in itself. Closer inspection revealed it to be a rather lovely white residence, surrounded by green, manicured lawn and dwarfed by the US Treasury next door.

That’s the other thing I love about DC: take a stroll through Foggy Bottom or downtown, and you practically trip over national headquarters. To your left, the US Chamber of Commerce. On your right, the Labor Department and FBI Building. (Although our boys, of course, were more interested in the police presence around high-security areas, especially the snipers on the roof of the White House.) SIGHTS TO SEE At 170 metres high, and with no taller buildings to obscure the view, the Washington Monument is visible from miles around. Erected in honor of George Washington, the American Revolutionary War commander and first US president, the iconic marble obelisk recently reopened after three years of repairs to fix cracks sustained during a rare 5.8-magnitude earthquake in August 2011. We’d hoped

to take the elevator ride to the summit, but alas, arrived too late in the day to get tickets (book online so you don’t miss out – the views are meant to be amazing).

Washington Monument aerial view in beautiful autumn colors

Instead, we admired the towering obelisk from below – gazing up to take in its austere, white outline. Set against a brightblue sky, the building seemed to be standing proud, resolute after its facelift. At its base, it’s encircled by 50 American flags (one for each state), and you can’t help but marvel at its simplicity. We then walked the length of the famous Reflecting Pool – which dramatically mirrors the pointing Washington Monument and expansive sky – and paused for a while at the National World War II Memorial, a moving, grand-scale tribute with stone architecture and fountains. Our last stop was the Lincoln Memorial, immediately recognisable as the building depicted on pennies and five-dollar bills. Its marble halls, engraved with Abraham Lincoln’s most impressive speeches, resonate with significance even before you see his largerthan-life sculpture, staring pensively toward the Capitol, the seat of the US Congress.

WORLD-RENOWNED MUSEUMS DC treats visitors to more than two dozen free museums, many of which flank the National Mall. Appealing to a wide-range of interests, these facilities are first class,

and are the reason the city is frequently named the best museum destination in the world. Our time was limited, so we only managed to fit in the National Air and Space Museum, containing hundreds of artifacts, including the original Wright 1903 Flyer and the Apollo 11 command module. Later in our trip, we also squeezed in the museum’s companion facility in Virginia, by Dulles International airport, where there are two giant hangars displaying a further incredible collection – the highlights of which for us were the Concorde and space shuttle Discovery. Next time, I’ve a feeling my family of males will enjoy the Crime Museum and the hugely popular International Spy Museum – but not before I’ve marched them round the National Gallery of Art and Sculpture Garden.

The king thanked the businessman and ordered the head of the bird trainer to provide all the facilities to those beautiful falcons and make them feel comfortable in their new country.

The head trainer took the birds and provided all essentials to help the birds adapt to the atmosphere. Gradually, the birds adapted to their new country. One day the king wanted to see the falcons fly as he heard that one of those falcons could fly to great heights at a very high speed. On seeing this, he was surprised and rewarded the bird trainer with gold coins. He inquired about the other falcon. The trainer stated with regret that the other falcon had not moved even a step from the day he arrived and just sat on the branch. He tried his best but failed to make this bird move. The king consoled him and told the trainer that he would bring someone more experienced than him. The king announced his wish to make the falcon move and fly. Hearing this, an old man reached the King’s palace and assured him that he would make the bird fly like the other one. The King visited the Falcon the next day and was very surprised to see the other falcon fly to great heights at great speed. The king was very happy and handsomely rewarded the old man. The king asked “what did you do to make the bird fly in a day?” The old man simply replied, ‘I just cut down the branch of the tree where the falcon used to sit.’ Many of us are like this. We have wings to fly, we know how to fly, and where to fly; still we sit doing nothing or doing something that makes us inferior to others. Don’t try to walk when you have wings to fly!
