his is indeed a very special issue and we owe a great deal of the excitement to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and our good friends at Brighton College for an exclusive opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the world’s greatest living sports legends. During my high school and college days, Kareem was in his glory, shattering every record in sight, and when I was offered the chance to meet this mountain of a man, I naturally, tingled with excitement! Not only did I shake his hand – which was accomplished with the help of a small step ladder – he was also kind enough to autograph a basketball for my son who was told that he would be grounded until his eighteenth birthday, should he ever decide to actually bounce it on a basket ball court.

November is American Diabetes Month and November 14th marks World Diabetes Day. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar became an active soldier in the fight against diabetes after losing his mother as a result of diabetes related issues. To have him with us here in The UAE was a great honour and visiting the campus of Brighton College, a once in a lifetime occasion for the very fortunate students and teachers. We are also very excited to introduce to our readers, especially the younger ones, our brand new ‘Brighteens’ page, brought to you in every issue moving forward, courtesy of the brilliantly creative minds of a group of amazing students at Brighton. We hope you enjoy it and encourage you to join in the fun with your own contributions. Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank the very kind readers who have participated in the Tavola recipe competition and have decided, as a result of the fabulous response and popular demand, to further extend the deadline. Please see the ad inside the magazine for further details or call us any time. Good luck to all and happy reading…

ASK THE TEACHER

Camilla's words of widsom

Dear Sarah,

Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you. Oscar Wilde

Dear Parent,

ADOPT WARAD & JAMEELA Age: Young adult Breed: Saluki These two love birds are still looking for their forever home/homes. If they are to be separated we would like another friendly dog in the home as they love the company of other dogs. If you own a saluki or two already you know how much salukis love to sleep together and lay on each other. These two are no exception. They love being around people and require a home with a garden especially if both the parents work. They like to run outside in the garden to let off some energy before sleeping or just lazing about all day. They both are vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered. For adoption queries email animal.action@hotmail.com.

MASHGHOOL means busy if you want to tell anyone (I am busy) you say : ana mashghool

As a mother, I want to help my child as much as possible in a home learning environment; are there any tools you can suggest that will assist in literacy improvement? Developing literacy is, without doubt, the key to succeeding in all areas of the curriculum - not just in English lessons! What parents often don't appreciate, however, is that there is a very important pre-literacy stage which has a significant impact on children's later literacy development. You can't start early enough when it comes to developing this earlier 'communication and language' stage with your child. Talking, playing and reading to your very young child provides the best possible foundation for their later literacy acquisition. There's lots of fabulous children's literature out there, starting with colourful and beautifully illustrated picture books. Julia Donaldson is a great writer for the 2-5 year olds and Roald Dahl is wonderful for the slightly older primary-aged child. As a parent, too, making reading a special and enjoyable experience is the very best way of encouraging your child to become a lifelong reader. There is much debate about when to introduce literacy - in terms of learning to read and write - but a common parental misconception is that it needs to be as early as possible. The research does not back this up!

Drawing By: Jude Soussan, a 12 year old grade 8 student at Al Ain International School, who studies art at Al Qattara Art Center .

When nursery schools spend too much time on reading and writing, at the expense of communication and language, the children may learn the mechanics of letter recognition and pencil grip earlier, but they don't have the understanding of language and comprehension to make subsequent rapid progress. Providing lots of opportunities to read specifically graded reading books, at the right level of difficulty for your child, and giving your child emergent writing opportunities (such as labels and lists), is the very best start to your children's learning journey. This is the approach that we encourage at Brighton College. Bon voyage! Sarah The Source’s very own “Ask the Teacher” columnist, Sarah Wood, comes to us from Al Ain’s prestigious Brighton College, armed with a passion for bringing out the very best in the children she teaches. Sarah will be on hand in every issue of The Source to offer her professional advice on early childhood education best practices. ASK THE DR. Hi Doc, I found out that I a have a lump on the left side of my breast. I consulted a doctor, who did an ultrasound and the results were normal. Then I consulted another doctor and once again the results were normal. Do you think I need to have an operation to remove the lump? Or is there any other form of treatment available besides surgery? I'm afraid of surgery and my family is not based here so I do not have anyone for support. Thank you and regards, Dear Reader, Your question is important in two distinct ways. The first is how it pertains to you personally and second, with regard to the general issue of seeking multiple opinions. I will address both. In your particular case it is clear that you

remain worried about a lump in your breast even though your doctors have assured you it is benign. When I have had patients with similar feelings I have offered to send them to a doctor they trust so they can find a treatment plan with which they are comfortable. In your case it may be helpful to seek a consult from a surgeon. In the larger context, it really is important to only see doctors we trust. Seeking many opinions on a particular issue can often cloud decision making or result in bad care. Having many doctors treat the same problem is like having many chefs cooking in the same pot of soup--something is

Parrot Missing For 4 Years Comes Home Speaking Spanish

A pet parrot that spoke with a British accent when it disappeared from its home four years ago has been reunited with its owner — and the bird now speaks Spanish. The Daily Breeze reported the reunion was brought about by a Southern California veterinarian who mistook the African gray parrot for her own missing bird. Teresa Micco tracked Nigel's microchip to Darren Chick, a Brit who lives in Torrance. Little is known about Nigel's whereabouts the past four years, but Chick says the bird's British accent is gone and it now speaks Spanish. It's the fifth parrot reunion facilitated by Micco, who has been running ads for her own missing bird for nine months.

TIPS TO GO GREEN

Though plush carpeting can be luxurious for your toes, it can be hard on your sinuses. Newly installed carpets made from synthetic fibres can emit "volatile organic compounds" (VOCs) and chemically unstable airborne compounds that can produce headaches, fatigue, nausea and nasal congestion. Go natural. Cotton and wool rugs and carpets generally do not produce VOCs.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar walks for Diabetes in Al Ain Six-time USA National Basketball Association champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar came to the Garden City on October 29 for the ICLDC’s (Imperial College London Diabetes Centre) Take a Step for Diabetes Week with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Prior to the walk he spoke to the community at the Al Ain Municipality Theatre about the importance of healthy living in the fight against diabetes. He addressed key issues like exercise, healthy eating habits and the importance of moderation in life. While answering questions from the audience, Abdul-Jabbar said, “I love pastries, but only have them as a treat on special occasions. You can eat sweet things every now and then as long as you exercise. Don’t give your body empty calories, instead consume things like honey, in moderation of course, which have a number of health benefits. Remember less sugar means less trouble.” After the walk, Abdul-Jabbar visited Brighton College for some court tips, demonstrations and a question and answer session. Showing his support for the cause,

Abdul-Jabbar posted a “shoefie” of himself taking a step for diabetes on his official twitter page before coming to the UAE. He nominated key media influencers in the UAE to also take a step for diabetes, including Kris Fade and Brent Black, morning and afternoon radio show hosts of Virgin Radio and Mohamed Al Otaiba, editor in chief of The National UAE, the country’s English daily newspaper.

The Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) #Walk2014 campaign aimed to encourage people to take steps to combat diabetes by leading active lifestyles. The week of activities following the walk include an autograph signing session during Train Yas at the Yas Marina Circuit for winners of the #Walk2014 social media competition and a visit to the ICLDC headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

Western Region Police Arrest a Seven-Member Asian Gang The precision of the investigation conducted by the officers of the Western Region Police Directorate led to the arrest of an Asian gang for robbing a sum of money from a woman of Asian nationality. The gang, who had additionally stolen mobile phones and gold jewelry - among other things - fled the residence with the stolen goods and possessions, and the case was referred to the concerned authorities. Colonel Ojeil Ali Abdullah Al Junaibi, Director of the Western Region Police Directorate, noted that the gang’s confessions to stealing from the woman and the subsequent arrest and end to their criminal activity was due to the rapid intervention and response of the officers and to their precision in collecting information. “We respond and combat crime in various ways, and the awareness among citizens and residents of these dangers enhance the police’s efforts in this regard,” he said. In detail, Colonel Al Junaibi reported that the arrested gang of seven-members was found wearing face masks in a white Toyota 10

The gang was in possession of knives of different sizes, a large bat, two pieces of iron, black plastic chains, cash of different currencies, five iPhones, four Blackberry phones, three Samsung Galaxy phones, one iPad Mini, a wireless device, a Nokia phone, watches, rings, and necklaces of silver and gold. The group accused of forced robbery consists of seven persons of Asian nationality who have formed a gang. Five of its members have entered an Asian woman’s house by

force, who then informed the police that the thieves had broken her bedroom door and had stolen an amount of money, gold jewelry, and a number of other phones. The victim reported that the gang told her that they would not return the stolen goods unless she provided them with AED 20,000 within a period of 15 days. All communication would be via a phone number allocated by the gang members for this purpose.

iPad Air 2

The design of the new iPad Air is slimmer than its predecessor. It is 18% thinner at 6.1mm and polishes things up a little bit in other areas. For instance, it's lighter than ever before at 437g, and the edges feel different in the hand thanks to a slightly more angular design.

The Air 2 gets a huge upgrade in potential graphics performance, thanks to the new A8X CPU, custom-made for the tablet. According to Apple, the new chip has a second-generation 64-bit architecture, houses 3 billion transistors and compared to the iPhone 6's A8 chip, has a 40 percent faster CPU while its GPU is 2.5 times faster. The tablet includes the new M8 motion coprocessor, last seen in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The chip tracks motion, calibrates sensors, and acts as a barometer. Don't expect people to stop using their iPads to take pictures anytime soon. The iSight

Photo iPad Scanning Dock This is the scanner that saves treasured photos directly to an iPad while it docks and charges the device. Controlled by a free app, the sheet-fed scanner makes it simple to preserve and share heirloom photos and documents as digital files. In as little as 12 seconds, a photo is converted to a crisp 300- or 600-dpi color JPEG image that is displayed on screen in real time and saved to the iPad’s camera roll. The integrated dock holds the iPad upright and has a builtin Lightning connector that recharges its battery in five hours. It scans sheets up to 8 1/2" x 14" in size and plugs into AC with your iPad’s USB power adapter. Designed

for iPads and iPhones running iOS 6.0 or later. Dimensions:- 4 1/2" H x 13" W x 4" D. (1 3/4 lbs.) Price: $169.95 online.

camera is now an 8-megapixel shooter, up from 5 megapixels on the Air, and comes with a burst mode. The camera app almost has the same feature set as the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, with enhanced panoramas, time-lapse and slow-motion video, plus dual microphones, and one big improvement is the inclusion of excellent post snap editing, which makes it very easy to take photo and instantly perfect it. The new tablet ships with iOS 8.1 and includes support for Apple Pay, Apple's new payment system. However, there's no NFC chip inside, so it can’t be used for retail purchases, it can be used in-app purchases instead. Price start from AED 1899 for 16GB (Wifi) and AED 2,399.00 for Wi-Fi + Cellular and can be ordered online.

Time for Family

A new app called OFFTIME helps you to focus and to unplug when work is over - thanks to smart app blocking, communications filter and insights into your smartphone usage. The app is designed to let you unplug without missing urgent matters. It lets you whitelist contacts who are able to pierce through your downtime, like your spouse or children, but otherwise shuts down apps, calls, texts, and emails. It can also autorespond to incoming messages on your behalf, while maintaining a careful activity log of everything you missed while away so you can quickly catch up.

Now a Safety Check on Facebook

In times of disaster or crisis, people turn to Facebook to check on loved ones and get updates. It is in these moments that communication is most critical both for people in the affected areas and for their friends and families anxious for news.

To provide a helpful tool that people can use when major disasters strike, Facebook has created Safety Check – a simple and

easy way to say you’re safe and check on others. During a major disaster, Safety Check will help you: • Let friends and family know you’re safe • Check on others in the affected area • Mark your friends as safe Only your friends will see your safety status and the comments

Offtime also provides similar insights about your usage of your phone, as its predecessors did, charting out hours spent on the device, and even detailing which individual apps are the largest time-sucks. And while in Offline mode, the app is smart enough to identify certain patterns – like some one who dials you six times in a row probably has an emergency and needs to get through. Choose from a list of customizable profiles, and select a period of time to unplug. ( OFFTIME ) takes care of the rest. Offtime is a free download

Brighton College the base of his

global fight against Diabetes as he surprised pupils with a

special visit to the leading Al

the ball-spinning prowess of this Basketball superstar.

He scored over 38,000 points during a glittering career in the NBA – more than anyone in the history of basketball, including megastars such as Michael Jordan. So when the iconic centre Kareem AbdulJabbar chose Brighton College as the centrepiece of his visit to Al Ain recently, pupils and staff could be forgiven for being more than a little starstruck. The ex-LA Lakers star competed in an incredible 1,500 games over 20 seasons in the NBA, becoming one of the biggest 14

sporting legends that the world has ever seen in the process. Standing at an impressive 7ft 2in, he towered over the excited pupils that Brighton College had lined up to take part in an exclusive basketball masterclass. Abdul-Jabbar followed up a charity walk at the Al Ain Municipality by choosing Brighton to launch the Take a Step for Diabetes Week at the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi. Before putting the College’s budding sporting stars through their paces, he inspired the pupils by sharing details of his dedicated fitness programme, stressing the importance of eating a balanced diet. Abdul-Jabbar commented: “I was asked by the organisers to come over and become involved because they thought I might have some credibility here as a successful athlete. As I retired, I managed to maintain my health, but diabetes has become a problem in the UAE. Visiting Brighton College has given me a platform to encourage people

to live a healthy lifestyle and eat in a healthy way. Where better to do it than at this amazing school?” Abdul-Jabbar became an icon of healthy living during an incredible career in which he accumulated a huge haul of games and was very rarely injured, with the exception of the eye scratch that led him to start wearing his trademark protective goggles. Abdul-Jabbar said: “I think some of the things that I have been doing - eating a balanced diet, staying active, being involved in exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle - give you benefit for your health for your whole life,” Abdul Jabbar said. “This is the message that I wanted to impart at Brighton College.” He continued: “We need to get that message across and the idea out about exercise. Exercise burns off the excess calories and builds muscle. Those things are good for you for your whole life. We just have to educate people about the best way to live.”

What is in your opinion, the biggest difference between the NBA players of today and during your time?

This once in a lifetime experience with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would not have been complete without an opportunity for the students to ask the ‘Gentle Giant’ some inspirational questions – and ask they did!

What is the most important thing to grasp if one wants to become a pro player?

“I would have to say that unlike during my time, the players of today are not always as motivated to pursue solid educations and many do not venture beyond high school. This poses a disadvantage in regards to their development in the entire picture of the game. A rock solid education should be at the forefront of everyone’s agenda, especially in today’s highly competitive environment!”

You are in the UAE on a crusade to eliminate diabetes; is there a personal reason for devoting so much of your time for this cause? “My mother, who was and will always remain a huge inspiration in my life, had diabetes and her passing was accelerated due to complications caused by the disease.” When did you start playing basketball and what inspired you later in life to become a pro player? “I started playing in the 4th grade and it

“If you want to play pro ball, the most valuable advice I can offer revolves around two basic elements; you must master the fundamentals and of equal importance is the ability to be a team player! As the old saying goes, “there is no I in the word Team” and to achieve your full potential as a player, you need to work with the entire team in mind.” If you had not become a basketball star, what would you have chosen as a career? “I was always very fond of history during my studies and would most definitely have pursued a career as a history teacher.”

We were extremely impressed by these questions and the manner in which the well spoken star engaged the eager students. It was truly a once in a lifetime event and The Source was extremely grateful to have been a part of this exclusive opportunity shared with Brighton College and one of the most impressive sports icons of all time!

his is a man’s country. Whether by law or land, we stand in the sand and claim our mark in the Middle East. We callous our hands in the brutal sun, corral the wild in cycle three, or we cater to the people who want things done their way and fast. Maybe you are removed from your work element and find yourself at home figuring out what to do. Let me share with you a hidden gem I recently discovered. A local friend of mine stopped by one day and confessed. “Jeff,” he said, “I’m stressed out. I’ve got so much going on right now and I need a moment to forget about it all. Do you want to know how I deal with it?” He told me that he visits a spa for men. My wife has visited Radiance Spa for Women by Bawadi mall. I didn’t realize there was a Radiance Spa for Men. I have never gone to a spa for a waxing (ouch), nor had my nails buffed like a shoe. There are Moroccan baths, mud treatments, and massages from ten different countries. In my mind, those are all for the pampered wife. This was a foreign concept for a man like me in a foreign country. It was time to get out of my comfort zone and try something new. There were three basic things I got accomplished. MASSAGE: Honestly, I thought I’d be thrown naked on a table while a wrestler named Komang, jumped on my back and

20

twisted me into a pretzel. Sleep well with that mental picture. Komang was professional and none evasive. I was modestly covered the entire time, and everything felt clean and sanitary. The Swedish massage is a great first time procedure and good for blood circulation. HAND SPA: Suraj was professional and explained every procedure he was doing. This is not one of those procedures I felt I needed, but Suraj did such great handy work, I kept looking at my nails for the rest of the week. MARINE FOOT SPA: My dad told me he got his nails done every month. Both, he and one of Radiance’s great employees, Benito, reminded me of how much damage our floors and the

desert do to our feet. If not for the wicked pleasure of great looking toes, it was explained that many guys did this to prevent nail fungus or infections. My encouragement is to try Radiance Spa for Men. Start with something small like a scalp massage or go in and get a shave. You will find the people of Radiance Spa for Men, extremely friendly and willing to help you overcome any fears you may have. I am grateful for the hospitality of Ray from Radiance. If it’s a man’s world or at least a man’s country, then I guess we also deserve to look good before those special occasions or just feel good after a hard week.

couple of issues ago, we ran an article about the worldwide epidemic of childhood obesity and since then, The Source has had the pleasure of meeting and sitting down with Chris Bolger, a young man bound and determined to tackle this escalating problem via an initiative called

Fit4Skool.

Fit4Skool is a unique online program that promotes healthy eating and physical activity in schools. It was developed to engage students of all ages in a fun and non-competitive environment encouraging the adoption of healthy life habits. Designed by teachers, it can be easily slotted into any class timetable with results that will place students on a positive pathway to lifelong healthy living. Fit4Skool doesn’t set its boundaries within the school timetable; it unites school and home life to maximize progress within 22

a shared environment that results in the benefit of students, teachers and families alike. Students can continue their learning at home via the website or a mobile application on their smart phones, while parents access the Healthy Eating Zone for nutritious wholesome recipes and an array of other beneficial information. Current Facts on Children’s Health An Increase in childhood obesity on a worldwide scale has been an alarming reality and The World Health Organization reports that more than 40 million children under the age of 5 are currently overweight and that worldwide obesity has nearly doubled in the last 25 years. The rise in the prevalence and severity of childhood obesity has been accompanied by increases in obesity related diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory issues. Poor eating habits coupled with physical inactivity are key in the prevalence of these diseases. The psychological consequences and stigmatization of child and adolescent obesity can have long lasting negative effects leading to exclusion and lack of confidence. Surely, this reality should be a sobering wake-up call for educators and parents and

the efforts of Mr. Bolger in his attempt to implement change, should be welcomed and applauded. Why Should Schools Adopt This Program • From a simple cost perspective, the Fit4Skool program makes absolute sense since only basic equipment is required and all schools are generally already equipped with the necessities. •

Schools, with the assistance of this program, are in a unique position to positively influence attitudes leading to lifelong benefits.

Fit4Skool will assist in promoting healthy eating habits along with educating students on the necessity of a balanced diet.

Students and teachers will have individual online profiles which can be customized with individual recorded results.

Students become informed decision makers, bringing about positive change in their lives.

are initially tested at the beginning and again at the end of the term to determine improvement in aerobic, muscular, locomotor and manipulative development.

Benefits for the Students • An improvement of general health and nutrition •

Psychological improvements including increased confidence, self esteem and the ability to combat stress.

Physical improvements like coordination, agility, speed, flexibility, cardio and respiratory endurance combined with increased strength.

The results will manifest themselves in enhanced focus during lessons, leading to all round scholastic improvements.

along with a sense of overall well being to the best of their abilities and Fit4Skool is an added tool to ensure that this promise is delivered.

By accessing the program, parents will be equipped to assist in their child’s physical development as well as their nutritional improved choices.

Parents can monitor their child’s results and help isolate areas requiring improvement.

How is Fit4Skool Delivered The program is delivered online through instructional/technique videos and accompanying text, all of which are accessible on the website and application with class appropriate material for parents, students and teachers. Teachers will use the site in school with their classes and students can log on at home for complete access to all videos for their class group while interacting with the site to edit their profiles as often as they like. The program is split into junior, primary and secondary sections to allow for age appropriate content.

The benefits for a school with such a program are obvious since their prime function is to deliver first class education

The program is split into three individual zones: • The challenge Zone – here students

Benefits for Parents • Parents will be encouraged to involve themselves through online access to their child’s program.

Action Zone – This is the heartbeat of the website which is updated fortnightly and assists teachers in increasing their student’s activity levels.

Healthy Eating Zone – Here students, teachers and parents benefit from fortnightly updated topics promoting healthy school lunches and snacks.

Before we invite schools and parents to further investigate the enormous benefits offered by the Fit4Skool program, there is one last thing I should mention – the price! For a mere AED 40 per child, parents and school boards alike are in a position to dramatically improve the well being of their children for an entire school year, not to mention a lifetime. And God knows we have no problem at all spending far more than this humble amount for so many frivolous things that bring virtually nothing in the form of long term benefits to the most important people in our lives. Children are the future resources of this planet and we should do everything in our power to ensure that the future is as bright and healthy as possible! Keep your

eeping the windows to our world healthy should be an obvious concern for all. There are many things that can be done to keep your eyes healthy. Here are some simple tips to help you achieve this.

CHECK YOUR DIET: One of the most important influences on your vision is what we eat. Green vegetables are great for the eyes. These are full of antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which can help protect against cataracts and degenerative diseases of the eyes. Fill your diet with spinach, turnips, lettuce, broccoli, zucchini, garden peas and sprouts. Other important diet components include adding more omega-3s. Most of us don’t get enough oily fish in our diet. Unless contraindicated, two to three servings of salmon and mackerel

EYES healthy

per week is a great addition. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help protect adult eyes from degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Eating a well-balanced diet also helps you maintain a healthy weight, which makes you less likely to get obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults.

WATCH THE LIGHT: UVA radiation penetrates deep into the eye, causing cataracts and degeneration in later life – not to mention the wrinkles caused by squinting in the sun. Wear sunglasses that are marked with the CE mark to protect your eyes from UV rays. Choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound lenses help protect your eyes from the side. Polarized lenses reduce glare while driving. If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection. It's still a good idea to wear sunglasses for added protection. Where possible, a wide brimmed hat will also help shade your eyes. QUIT SMOKING: Those who smoke are four times more likely to develop degenerative diseases of the eyes than those who don’t smoke. Ditch the cigarettes and help protect your eyes. If you've tried to quit smoking before and started smoking again, keep trying. The

more times you try to quit smoking, the more likely you are to succeed. ORGANIZE YOUR DESK: If you spend more than two hours working with a computer screen then you could develop tired, strained eyes. This is also known as computer vision syndrome. To help reduce this, position your monitor about an arm’s length away from you, reduce the glare with a screen and experiment with brighter and dimmer lighting to relieve your eyes. GET SOME SLEEP: Your body heals itself during sleep. Studies show that sleeping less can lead to dry eye. Establish a routine, reduce your caffeine and avoid exercise a few hours before bed to help improve your sleep quality. VISIT YOUR EYE SPECIALIST: The eyes should be examined regularly. It can help protect your eyesight. Some eye diseases can have no symptoms, such as glaucoma. It's important to find these diseases early on, when they're easier to treat.

By Farid Nouisser

eing a rather extroverted individual, I am always looking for a venue to express, and it was this quest for the limelight and a very kind invitation from a friend that brought me to a meeting of the Toastmasters of Al Ain. To my surprise the Al Ain Chapter of Toastmasters International is led by our very own hometown Mr. Saeed Al Lamki. I should actually rephrase the previous comment by saying that I was delighted to see a UAE National holding the position of president and when I initially approached Mr. Al Lamki to be featured in our Al Majlis, he was most reluctant. I assured this very humble man that his story was not only of interest to our readers, but would prove to be very inspirational to the many expats and other UAE nationals that would benefit from becoming a part of the Toastmaster family. Mr. Al Lamki is a charming well spoken retired gentleman who has been living in the Garden City since 1967. He is the father of three sons and two daughters and in fact, his youngest daughter is following the lead of her father by having become an active member of the club.

these skills and implement positive change in both their personal and professional lives.”

When and why Toastmasters?

“I joined the club in 2006 while employed as a human resources manager at Tawam Hospital. Having had an extensive career with big corporations like British Petroleum and ADNOC Distribution, I was always comfortable communicating with my colleagues on a one-to-one basis, but found it challenging to speak in front of larger groups of people. Toastmasters provided me with an ideal platform to hone these skills while surrounding myself in an encouraging environment of people with similar goals.” How did you become President? “I started at the club in the position of Sergeant at Arms and became President only this year as a result of a voting system that we have in place. I did not run for the position, rather was selected in a common vote by our club members. It has been an honour to act as President and I thank my fellow Toastmasters for granting me this opportunity.” How has the response to Toastmasters been in Al Ain? “Since its inception in Al Ain in 2001, our club has grown to become the most culturally diversified chapter in the entire

UAE. We are proud to have a very broad representation of members and it makes for extremely interesting sessions. We currently have 20 active members and open our doors at every meeting to welcome new guests in hopes that they will be inspired to join our growing club. One area of growth that has thus far not been as promising as we anticipated is the involvement of young UAE Nationals. But at the rate of development we are currently experiencing as a country, I believe this will change in the very near future. I should also add that we are extremely proud to welcome Mr. Mohammed Murad, a UAE National from Dubai, who is currently holding the position of President for the entire Toastmaster International organization – this can only help bolster the local support we are looking for!” Why would you recommend Toastmasters for young UAE Nationals? “First off, I would recommend Toastmasters to anyone and everyone, but I particularly urge the young people of our nation to join us because they are the future of our country. The goal of any Nation should be an achievement of control of their respective affairs and this requires strong leadership which in turn demands people with impeccable communication skills. We provide an opportunity in a non-judgmental environment where people can develop

Have you ever thought of creating an Arabic speaking chapter of Toastmasters? “This actually does exist in Abu Dhabi and we used to have one in Al Ain. It has always remained in the plan and we hope to resurrect an Arabic speaking version in the near future.” After having participated at my first Toastmasters meeting, I was impressed by the infinite topic of discussion agenda; are there any topics you avoid during meetings? “Quite simply, to uphold our ethos of camaraderie, we consider religion, sex and politics to be off limits at our gatherings. I believe you will agree that this makes a great deal of sense! Not only did I benefit from my first visit to Toastmasters and believe that I will make an honest effort to become a frequent flyer, I also thoroughly enjoyed my discussion with Mr. Saeed Al Lamki. Before my departure I asked him to share some words of wisdom with our readers: “Our world revolves in what is becoming an increasingly incomprehensible fashion, and I believe that the key to peaceful human coexistence is open communication, tolerance and an embracing of our respective differences.” A wise thought from a very wise man… The Source

Kate Moss makes Breast Shape Champagne Glass To celebrate Kate Moss' 25 years in the fashion industry, a champagne glass moulded from her left breast has been created. Mayfair’s 34 Restaurant, where Moss celebrated her star-studded 40th birthday lunch back in January, commissioned British artist Jane McAdam Freud, daughter of late painter Lucien Freud who Moss posed for while pregnant, to create a mould of the model’s breast. The establishment described the result as an "intricate abstract design reminiscent of Art Deco symmetry which, when held at an angle, shows a beautiful curvy shape” and the coupe has her “Kate” signature accompanied by a small heart on the base, as seen on all her beauty collaborations.

We were so impressed with our last visit to Elements at The Hili Rayhaan Rotana that we just had to return for another sampling of ‘Super Chef’, Carlos Exprua’s creations. Not only was he on hand, once again, to tickle The Source Foodies taste buds, but he made a point of forgoing his day off to venture back into the kitchen to conjure up an extra special hammour dish with a California twist! One bite was all that was required to incite an immediate addiction to this delightful ocean harvest. I am definitely going to try this one in my own kitchen and perhaps see if I can get Carlos to join us at home for some of our humble hospitality – and naturally, a few up close and personal culinary tips! 32

The Magic Forest

By: Amanda Reid

In part two of our mini series on charming theme parks, our guest columnist reviews Holland’s Efteling – which has been delighting visitors with its fantasy-themed attractions for more than 60 years

E

fteling is the Netherlands’ largest theme park and one of the oldest in the world. Yet the term theme park doesn’t seem quite the right description. Much of it is beautifully landscaped, with gardens, faux town squares, lakes, fountains and a very European Fairytale Forest. This makes it an enchanting day out for parents and small children. Located near Breda and Eindhoven, it opened as just the Fairytale Forest in 1952, and this is its unique selling point. A succession of talented designers has ensured that each new section of the park is in character. As it was expanded, Efteling grew to become one of the most popular theme parks in the world, based on ancient myths and legends, fairytales, fables and folklore. 34

With more than four million visitors a year, it is the Netherlands’ most visited attraction. Along with all the charm, there are also some great rides – with at least four rollercoasters and various boat trips and trains. And, of course, the ubiquitous swinging Pirate Ship. Strangely, there are more large scary rides here than it appears at first cutesy glance. You enter Efteling through a fairy tale witches hat-roofed building, with at least five curved peaks, and almost instantly you are in a garden. A garden of neatly pruned hedges and tasteful flowers – yet no tulips? And, before you know it, the kids have raced ahead to the music and there are fountains dancing 40 feet high in the middle of a big lake. Not so big that you can’t get a little bit splashed though. The frog princes at each corner spout water out, too, so that helps. Looking around we notice we are in a large square with Arab/Moorish architecture on one side, and South American on the other. Which way? We opted to start gently with the Fairytale Forest. As you follow the forest path, you come across mechanised reenactments of Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel

my world Fountain at the foot of the Burj Khalifa and the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas. You can’t fail to be impressed by the attention to detail at Efteling, not only in the marvellous characters dotted all around the park, but also in the park’s ingenious waste disposal system. There are 11 talking bins, which probably explain how the park stays so clean. The most popular gobbler, Hollow Bulging Gijs, makes a gobbling sound when fed rubbish and politely thanks the donor, while Captain Gijs fires a cannon in appreciation. Accommodation options at Efteling were good. I recommend a woodland cottage at the Efteling Bosrijk Village. It’s an A-frame two-storey affair in a forest just outside of the park, so there were no Big Bad Wolves or Little Red Riding Hoods there.

and Gretel, Rapunzel, etc. And my favourite – the Little Red Shoes (Hans Christian Anderson) that dance on a little table all by themselves! It must be magic, and brings to life a little girl’s dream. The rides we went on were all fun, such as the monorail that goes through ‘Funny Folks’ homes on stilts. Think grinning goblins. And there are lots of puppet shows around. But beware of the Villa Volta. On the English map, it is translated as ‘Haunted House’. This does not really cover it. The clue is in the name – revolting. Well, I can say no more. There is some build up to this experience – a story (in Dutch) with some scary looking props. I wish I knew what the story was, but I know it involved a chair and a skeleton. FAVOURITE RIDES Our children voted the best ride to be the Pirana White Water ride, where you end

up less wet than you expect, despite going down a few small waterfalls in a rubber dinghy with some new friends. Their other favourite, the double-track wooden racer rollercoaster George and the Dragon, was bigger and scarier than anything at Legoland, but it does NOT go looping (I promised!). And it has oldfashioned wooden criss-crossed supports. Thrill-seekers with plenty of courage will enjoy whizzing around two loops and two corkscrews on the Python rollercoaster. A great way to end the day is by watching Europe’s biggest water show: Aquanura – a spectacle of water, light and fire, in which coloured fountains shoot higher than the pagoda to the sweet sound of Efteling melodies. If this sounds like something else you might have already seen in the UAE, it’s because the water show was designed by the same company that created the Dubai

MATILDA

BY ROALD DAHL, QUENTIN BLAKE (ILLUSTRATOR) Matilda is a little girl who is far too good to be true. At age five-and-a-half she's knocking off double-digit multiplication problems and blitz-reading Dickens. Even more remarkably, her classmates love her even though she's a super-nerd and the teacher's pet. But everything is not perfect in Matilda's world. For starters she has two of the most idiotic, self-centered parents who ever lived. Then there's the large, busty nightmare of a school principal, Mrs. ("The") Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who flings children at will and is approximately as sympathetic as a bulldozer.
