fter more than 3 years of living in Al Ain, my wife and I both agree that some of our dearest friends and closest relationships have been fostered during our stay in this city. Canada is an extremely multicultural place, but the blend of nationalities here in the UAE seem somewhat more tangible and the many people from a wide variety of nations that have enriched our lives, will be forever embedded in our hearts. As wonderful as all of this sounds, there is, of course, a major drawback; as expats, our time here is usually limited and the day of reckoning, when we must part with our closest friends is always looming somewhere on the horizon. Although we make promises to see one another again, let’s face it, when the separation is the likes of New Zealand and Canada, for example, the reality is that we may cross paths again only if we are fortunate enough to not have our repatriating lives swallow us up in the day in and day out new commitments that we will all face when we bid the UAE farewell – not to mention the elaborate costs of family travel to distant lands! Having touched on this topic, it is with heavy hearts that The Source must soon say goodbye to our fabulous ‘Stuff for Men’ columnist, Jeff Skinner and his family, as they set their sights on returning back to the States. We have been blessed with Jeff’s contributions over the past year and he will be dearly missed! Thank you from all of us Jeff and we wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavours. When a door in our lives closes, there is always another door or window that opens up, bringing with it refreshing new light and hope. It is on this note that I will introduce our readers to the new Urban Woman columnist, ‘Urban Annie’. Annie has already proven to be just the inspiration we have been searching for and we are ecstatic about having her share her writing expertise and extremely pleasant disposition with us and our readers. Be sure to follow Annie on our Urban Woman page and discover the bliss of Radiance Beauty Center in this issue. Before I sign off, I would like to express my gratitude for the luxurious driving experience given to me courtesy of our friends at Eastern Motors. Last week end I had the pleasure of piloting the all new 2015 Mercedes Benz C – Class through the roundabouts of Al Ain and beyond – what a rush! I did my best to eliminate my wife’s fingernail imprints on the dash resulting from my near sound barrier breaking blast along one of our deserted roads – YALLAH!!

The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny. Albert Ellis

ADOPT

ASK THE TEACHER Dear Sarah, Our son is currently enrolled in the 4th grade at an American curriculum school and has had to serve repeated detentions along with the rest of his class as a result of the misadventures of one or two classmates who refuse to come forward and confess their delinquencies. Is it an advisable practice to punish an entire class for the crimes of one or two? Dear Parent, Issuing sanctions to a whole class for the poor behavior of a few children follows the same logic as punishing an innocent citizen for a crime that they didn't commit, so no, it isn't advisable, but it is all too common in schools! Not only are there question marks about this approach on an ethical level - it also isn't a very effective behaviour management practice. Children have an acute sense of fairness and will generally comply with a school's behaviour policy, as long as it is seen to be consistently applied and rooted in justice, but the system will lose credibility in the eyes of the children if it is deemed to be unfair. The result? Punishing all can simply promote the poor behaviour of all!

ARTHUR Age: Young adult He has been with his foster dad for many months now. He does not want any young children in his home as he just doesn't get them. Vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered. Arthur desperately needs a foster home asap. He's a lovely dog but needs a place with no children and if in an apartment may need some days to understand where he is supposed to go to the bathroom if there is no garden attached. For adoption queries email animal.action@hotmail.com.

It goes without saying that children do make mistakes and they need to learn from them. They spend a considerable amount of time at school in order to learn, amongst other things, how to conduct themselves appropriately, how to develop positive values and how to follow society's rules. So what is the best approach to behaviour management? At Brighton, a recent

inspection report noted that the behaviour of our children is "exemplary". How do we do it? To put it simply, all children are very clear about the College's values and they are explicitly rewarded for following them. It is a very positive behaviour model that is highly motivating for the children - they generally want to do the right thing! If a pupil does make a mistake, then they need to fully understand their error and consider the possible negative consequences of their actions. Whenever possible, pupils should also have an opportunity to try to redeem themselves with additional positive contributions to their school, linked to their mistake. The key here is actually knowing who made the mistake. It is a teacher's responsibility to conduct a full investigation if there has been a behavioural incident, so that the response to it can be wellinformed, fair and provide and opportunity for the children concerned to learn and grow as responsible citizens. Best wishes, Sarah The Source’s very own “Ask the Teacher” columnist, Sarah Wood, comes to us from Al Ain’s prestigious Brighton College, armed with a passion for bringing out the very best in the children she teaches. Sarah will be on hand in every issue of The Source to offer her professional advice on early childhood education best practices. Send your questions to asktheteacher@thesourceuae.com and see them answered here!

TIPS TO GO GREEN When it comes to buying fruits and vegetables that go easy on the earth, it's hard to beat organic. But what does organic really mean? "Organic" refers to an earth friendly way of farming and processing foods using no synthetic chemicals to control bugs or weeds. Organic farming usually involves farming methods that help conserve soil and protect water supplies. Many organic farmers also plant specific bushes and flowers to attract beneficial insects and ward off unwanted pests. Milk and dairy products from cows that are not treated with hormones and antibiotics and are given organic feed are considered organic. If your food store doesn't yet carry organic food, ask the manager to explore the possibilities. You can also refer the manager to local organic farmers who would be eager to supply more stores with healthy produce.

GETS REJECTED

Happy Singles' Day! If you’re planning an elaborate proposal, you should probably know the girl is going to say “yes.” That was not the case for one Chinese programmer, Sina Technology reports. The unnamed man decided to spend two years of savings on 99 iPhone 6s—costing an estimated $85,000—arrange them in the shape of a heart, and then very publicly propose to his girlfriend. And… she reportedly said no. Maybe if he had sprung for the iPhone 6 Plus…

ASK THE DR.

Dear Dr. Gabe My understanding is that diabetes type 2 is preventable. What can we do to minimise the possibilities of being affected by this growing problem?

AND THE The proposal came right in time for China’s Singles’ Day — a holiday that falls on 11/11 — which many Chinese bachelors celebrate by online shopping, and ending their single-dom. It’s probably safe to assume this newly single programmer will not be buying himself an iPhone. Dear Reader, Thanks for such a great question. There are several ways to prevent type II Diabetes Mellitus. The first is by maintaining a healthy, lean weight. The second is by eating a healthy diet. A diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds with low to moderate amounts of fish, poultry, and dairy products, and only a little red meat has shown to lower the risk of developing diabetes. The benefit of exercise in preventing diabetes has been demonstrated in several studies as well. Daily

Al Ain Mall’s Go Pink Campaign A crowd of more than 10,000 enthusiasts gathered at Al Ain Mall on Friday, 31st Oct 2014 to take part in the “Go Pink Al Ain Mall” Breast Cancer Campaign. In a show of solidarity, representatives from leading companies, schools, and social organizations joined Al Ain Mall’s “Go Pink Walkathon” which was organized for the 5th consecutive year. There was an air of love and good will shrouding the event as participants pledged their support in creating awareness and fighting Breast Cancer. The funds generated through this event were donated to the Friends of Cancer Society. Even the merchants of Friday Souk (students of HCT & schools) graciously donated a portion of their income to help the cause. The 2.5 KM Walk around the Mall was followed by a fun filled day of action that appealed to everyone. The activities included African community drumming; kid’s workshops, face painting, balloon twisting, stilt walkers; besides various dance shows held on the stage (Lebanese-

Abu Dhabi revises water and electricity tariff Abu Dhabi has revised water and electricity for both Emiratis and expatriates living in the emirate effective from January 1, 2015, in an apparent move to minimise government subsidies involved.

of 170 to 300 litres and 15kwh per day respectively, according to the Federal Water and Electricity Authority (Fewa). Better conservation practices can save 14-17 per cent of water and energy.

Utility tariffs in Abu Dhabi have been heavily subsidised by the government. The electricity subsidy in residential buildings ranges from 55 per cent to 90 per cent and the water subsidy ranges from 79 per cent to 100 per cent, according to an Urban Planning Council Document.

Under the new water tariff, Emiratis have to pay Dh 1.7 per 1000 (one thousand) litres up to the use of 700 litres a day in flats and 7,000 (seven thousand) litres a day in villas. The use beyond this limit will attract Dh 1.89 per 1000 litres tariff.

Under the new tariff Emiratis have to pay for water that is free under the current tariff. There is no increase in the electricity tariff for Emiratis who use up to 30 KWh (kilowatt hours) a day in flats and 400 kwh a day in villas. They can continue paying the existing rate of five fils per kwh. But Emiratis who use above this limit have to pay a new tariff of 5.5 fils per KWh. The Regulation and Supervision Bureau (the Bureau) in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) and Al Ain Distribution Company (AADC) announced the new structure. A UAE resident uses 550 litres of water and 20-30 kilowatt hours (KWh) of electricity a day against the international average

Low-use category expatriates will face around 170 per cent increase in water tariff, from the existing Dh 2.2 per 1000 litres to Dh 5.95 per 1000 litres. Those who use beyond 700 litres per day in flats and 5,000 (five thousand) litres per day in villas will have to pay a higher tariff that will announced later this month, an official spokesperson of RSB told Gulf News on Wednesday. Around 40 per cent increase in electricity tariff will be there for expatriates who have a low consumption- from 15 fils per KWh to 21 fils per KWh. Those who use beyond 20 KWh in flats and 200 KWh in villas will have to pay a higher tariff that will be announced later this month. Source: www.gulfnews.com

. . . WAR7

ovember 8th was a day to remember, as once again WAR assaulted Al Ain with an army of nearly one thousand brave warriors hailing from 62 different nations. Unlike any other, this WAR had no casualties and every soldier finished victoriously! Pathetic fallacy embraced the event as the skies opened up to unleash torrential rains onto the battlefield. Although I could not attend this particular installment of WAR, The Source did have its infiltrator, Alex Garza there, to not only report on the event, but actually participate and suffer the cruel yet rewarding challenges of the WAR 7 punishment! “I have participated before but this particular installment was by far the best ever”, Alex explained. “The course had new and better challenges and the addition of Mother Nature’s fury only added to the excitement; I want maximum suffering to insure that I am getting my money’s worth”, he added!

From just 75 racers competing in WAR 1, to nearly 1,000 participants less than two years later, this has become an event placing Wadi Adventure, not only on The UAE map of places to be, but judging from the multicultural support, I believe it is safe to say that we can soon refer to these events as WORLD WARS! Standing at the base of Jebel Hafeet, General Manager – Lennard Otto says “It’s definitely the contrast in landscape and scenery that makes Wadi Adventure in Al Ain the perfect location for the 10 km maximum punishment W.A.R. series. The mountain, the desert and the great facilities at Wadi Adventure are the perfect ingredients for this kind of event.”

Precise lines and sculptural surfaces create progressive light and shadow effects. A Refuge for

Relaxation

hese days, it seems the only place I can be alone with my thoughts is in the confines of my Toyota Yaris on my commute to and from work. Needsless to say, I was thrilled to be spending a few peaceful hours in the serene setting of Radiance Beauty Center. As I climbed the steps leading to the spa, I left behind any guilt of deserting my family for some well-deserved “ME Time”. The warm and cheerful receptionists explained the delightful package I was about to experience: a Swedish massage, a facial and a ME Bath Hand and Foot Spa! That last item dissolved any remnants of lingering guilt. After completing the client form, I was served sweet lemonade and given a cold towel to freshen up with, before being whisked off to the massage room. A native of Thailand, Sakanya brought her massage expertise to Radiance in 2007. “From a young age, people in Thailand learn about the importance of massage.” At first, I couldn’t seem to relax with mundane thoughts of school projects, work and house chores racing through my mind but very soon, Sakanya’s manipulation of pressure points alleviated my stress, enveloping me in tranquility. She asked me, on occasion, if she was using a comfortable amount of pressure, to which I groggily answered, “Yes, it’s perfect.” Sakanya expressed

that although her job can be physically exhausting; she takes pride in her work. “It is gratifying to know that I am making people feel better.” She certainly had me feeling better! Next up was my 30-something year old skin, which lately, has been adolescentlike with all its breakouts. Genevie was just the lady to help me. She cleansed my skin followed by a Face Mapping Skin Analysis to determine the best treatment for my skin type. She recommended an anti-aging facial which firms and brightens the skin. Radiance uses Dermalogica Professional, a line of premium skincare products. After a gentle extraction and exfoliation, Genevie applied two masks to my face. The first was an eye mask that reduces dark circles. The second was an icy anti-aging contouring face mask, which reduces inflammation and puffiness while closing the pores. The mask firmed up after 15 minutes during which time Genevie massaged my neck and shoulders. Then the mask was peeled away and the residue rinsed off. Throughout the treatment, Genevie explained each step making her detailed product knowledge evident. She finished off with a toner, antiaging serum and moisturizer, leaving me refreshed and ready for my final treatments. All this pampering was making me hungry! As if they read my mind, the ladies at Radiance had a healthy snack tray waiting for me in the ME Bath Spa room. The fresh salad and juice was just the pickme-up I needed before embarking on a

luxurious hand and foot treatment. Kathy and Rochelle showed me a scrumptious selection of Me Bath Ice cream scoops in every flavor imaginable. These little scoops fizz when dropped into water releasing 6 essential oils that soften rough hands and feet leaving your skin smelling delicious. After a white tea and ginger scrub and a moisturizing foot and hand mask, the ladies finished by expertly polishing my nails. As my spa day came to an end, I couldn’t help but notice what a positive and energetic attitude all the ladies of Radiance possess. Regardless of what service is required, Radiance strives to give every woman the best possible experience. Their extensive menu of services and packages is sure to meet everyone’s relaxation needs and the loyalty program will keep you coming back. M

y time in the U.A.E is winding down. Two years ago, we stepped into the cool January breeze and felt like we were going to be on a never - ending vacation. Then, work took over and life was back to normal. Our new relationships will be forever burned into the Facebook pages of our lives. We learned that people were the same pretty much where ever we lived. There were the impatient, entitled, and self-serving. We also discovered neighbours who were content, had a genuine love for others, and would give if ever called upon. We have been discussing our exit strategy with a few friends who are also leaving. The big question has been, have we done it all? A few friends wanted to ride the fastest rollercoaster. One had not seen the view from the tallest building. Another had not traveled to all seven Emirates.

As we collect our things and sell possessions, I thought I’d share a few valuables that one day your family could take back home. JOURNAL We kept a digital blog to keep a journal of our adventures. It was more for our memories than for others to read. My wife wanted to have a family picture in the desert dunes to take back with us. I agreed that it would be a unique moment we could take home without the need of a suitcase. HISTORY Standing in the shadow of the soon to be third tallest building, was just incredible. Visiting historical forts and museums gave us an appreciation of the culture and a view of history frozen in time. As a father, I’ve always wanted to install in my kids, a sense of wonder and excitement for other places. Our best challenge was learning the languages of our region. HAVE FUN Not only can I say we saw the Rolling Stones, but we can also boast about an unforgettable date night in Abu Dhabi.

One truly iconic moment to experience is going to a camel race. Better still; go out with a bang by watching the fireworks at the Palm Jumeriah on New Year’s Eve. TRAVEL We spent our two years getting out of debt so we didn’t travel. However, like a Sultan, I can tell my American friends that we visited Dubai at least once a month. There were two valuable moments our family spent together. We took a family safari into the desert to ride camels and eat the local food. Second, we took a drive and lay under the stars in a bowl of towering sand dunes. Our children ran and played and ate marshmallows by the fire - valuable moments to take home. Trips to Oman or an adventure in Thailand can be amazing, as long as they’re paid for. Those places inspire an education that children will never forget. As I sat in my house and considered the crap I had to sell, I realized what was most valuable to us memories. Thanks for the memories…

Get to know your family at the

Dinner table

T

ime and time again we have mentioned the importance of family bonding and how high tech gadgets are interfering with traditional family time. A friend of mine recently had her internet go down for a couple of hours and decided to go downstairs to visit with her family. Afterwards, she remarked, “I had no idea how wonderful a bunch they really are!”

2. What animal would you be?

We cannot stress the importance of family enough. So this week, we bring you something fun and easy to try at your dinner table (yes you should eat together at the dining table, rather than on the couch or in front of the TV!). Alison Prince one of the founders of HowDoesShe.com, shares a ‘how – to’ list for starting conversations at the dinner table. Grab a pen and paper; you will want to write this down.

11. Who would you rather be: an NBA ballplayer, the mayor, a famous explorer or a movie star? Why?

Cut these questions into strips, fold them and place them in a jar, and every time you find the table too silent, dig in. Remember everyone should answer the question rather than just directing them towards the kids. Take turns and share the reins. 1. If you could have picked your own name, what would it have been?

The Diabetes UAE Pandemic By JJ Green

F

or any nation, being first or among the leaders in certain categories is a matter of pride and accomplishment, but when a top ranking in diabetes is today’s reality for the UAE, deep concern is something we should all be burdened with. The UAE has the second highest incidence of diabetes in the world with 20% of its residents and an estimated 25% of Nationals currently suffering from the disease. Nearly three

quarters of the diagnosed population does not have the problem under control and it is believed that a further 40% - 50% of the diabetics in this country are unaware of having the disease. If these outrageous proportions are not enough of a wake-up call, then let’s have a look at the issue on a global scale: •

• •

• •

• •

An estimated 366 million people – or 8.3% of the global adult population – live with diabetes, with millions more at risk of developing the disease. By 2030 this number is expected to grow to 552 million, or 9.3% of adults, equating to roughly three new cases of diabetes every 10 seconds. The projected cost of diabetes in the U.S. alone is USD $3.4 trillion over the ten years through 2020, according to the United Health Group. Diabetes and its complications are a leading cause of death and a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. It is the leading cause of devastating complications such as kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations, and new cases of blindness among U.S. adults.

statistic of all to digest is the alarming number of children in this country that have type 1 diabetes. These figures have doubled since 2000 and babies as young as 16 months are being diagnosed. There are no exact figures for children, but the Health Authority Abu Dhabi is compiling a diabetes registry that will list the number of children with both Type 1 and Type 2 forms of the disease. For a better understanding of the two most common forms of diabetes allow me to explain in a little more detail: TYPE 1 AND TYPE 2 DIABETES TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS: Formerly called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). It is an unpreventable disease, which can quickly lead to death without daily administrations of injectable insulin

to regulate blood glucose. Type 1 diabetes represents 5-10% of diagnosed diabetes cases. Autoimmune factors leading to the body’s destruction of its own insulin producing pancreatic beta cells are thought to play a role in the disease development. TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS: Formerly called non-insulin-dependent diabetes, or adult onset diabetes. This is the most common form, accounting for approximately 90% of cases. Type 2 diabetes arises when the body develops resistance to insulin. Type 2 diabetics either produce an inadequate supply of insulin or their bodies cannot use the insulin properly leading to dysfunctional glucose metabolism, impaired cellular processes, and elevated serum glucose levels. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes is preventable in most patients with changes in physical activity, diet and environmental conditions.

Having the highest prevalence of diabetes in the Middle East North Africa region, the UAE need not only concern itself with an escalating health dilemma of outrageous proportions, they must also realize that future economic ramifications could prove devastating if proper mitigating measures are not taken soon! Diabetes associated costs borne by the government, civil society, and private sectors constitute approximately 40% of the UAE’s overall healthcare expenditures. In 2011, the total cost of diabetes to the Emirates was nearly $6.6 billion or 1.8% of GDP, higher than in any other GCC country. And things are not getting better! If predictions become a reality in the very near future, one can only imagine the paralyzing effect diabetes will have on the economies of even the richest of nations. Preparation and awareness are essential to curb the current escalating trends and much work is required to place the UAE and indeed the world in a better place regarding overall healthy lifestyle habits. Since type 2 diabetes is preventable and comprises by far, the majority of the affected population, it makes a great deal of sense to educate the public on the urgency of adopting healthier lifestyle options. November 14th marks World Diabetes Day and should be a reminder to us all that this disease is no longer an issue we can ignore. As responsible human beings and foremost, as loving parents, we need to take action to prevent the future of our nations from becoming statistics – it is possible and a matter of choice; choose to live right and enjoy long healthy lives! lectronics are becoming a huge part of life in this century. Being increasingly connected has its good and bad points. We are able to continue being engaged with the world, to some extent, from the privacy of our homes all hours of the day or night. But in doing so, we are exposed to the light that these devices emit; whether laptops, tablets, mobile phones, televisions etc. This light affects our mental activity and promotes wakefulness. In today’s 24/7 lifestyle, there is a great loss of the evening reduction in light that has taught our brains to wind down in preparation for sleep. The use of electronic devices before going to sleep or having these devices in the bedroom further disrupts the natural pattern of the sleepwake cycle. Light has been shown to promote wakefulness. There are cells in our eyes that sense light and dark, signaling our brain about the status of the outside world and setting the external day-night cycle. This helps us to be alert in the morning and begin to feel sleepy at the right time at night. The power of light as an alerting agent is easier understood when we think of the sun, but many people are unaware that light from a tablet or phone is also an 24

exposure to light. This light is enough to cue our brain that wakefulness is needed. As adults we are subject to these influences and children are particularly susceptible. The increasing prevalence of having electronics in the children’s rooms creates an environment of evening engagement. The light exposure negatively impacts sleep time, sleep quality and daytime alertness. Children who use such media as a sleep aid to relax at night stay up longer, have fewer hours of sleep per week and experience daytime sleepiness. Teenagers who have televisions in their rooms have more difficulty initiating sleep and have shorter sleep times. Texting and emailing after lights outs, even once per week, dramatically increases self-reported daytime sleepiness among teenagers. Not all electronic usage is for fun. Homework is extensive for most children and their work often requires using the computer, another significant light source used late in the evening. Increasing demands of education, busy social and extracurricular activities and the demand for entertainment, all keep both adults and children electronically engaged well into the night. Here are some tips to improve your sleep quality: • Switch to night-time activities that don't involve exposing your face to light just before you go to sleep. Reading a traditional paper book or an electronic book on non-light emitting electronic devices is a much better alternative

than reading a book on an iPad or laptop. •

Even better, would be to introduce a no-electronics policy surrounding the hours leading up to bed time to let your body move naturally and gradually towards sleep. If you cannot manage this, at least aim for a transition period of about 15 to 30 minutes of technology-free time before you go into your bedroom for sleep.

The best solution is to create an electronic-free zone in the bedroom.

Good sleep is required for the body to heal, grow, repair and manage weight. The brain also functions better with an improved learning capacity, better moods and creativity when sleep is adequate.

Tanya Ganwani The Face of Fitness 360 and so much more... By Farid Nouisser

The Al Majlis pages of The Source are always dedicated to individuals who have managed to contribute to our society in an outstanding fashion. Since November is a month reserved for Diabetes awareness, we were excited to interview a young lady whose entrepreneurial inspiration is helping to combat the sedentary lifestyle of a significant number of this country’s population. With an ever increasing supply of processed junk food leading to an epidemic of ‘mall nutrition’ courtesy of the many fast food fixes available, it is refreshing to know that there are people doing their part to introduce an ethos of healthy living to the general public. Meet Tanya Ganwani, a very bright and active woman who brought inspiration and a radiant smile to The Source for an interesting personal chat about her passion for business and bringing healthy lifestyle choices to The GCC. 1. Has the UAE always been home to you? Yes, I was born and raised in Dubai. 2. Were your studies related to your entrepreneurial ventures and where were you educated? I studied at the American School of Dubai from K1- Grade 12 and then moved to London for my undergraduate program at Regent’s College. I graduated college with a Bachelor of Arts in International Business Management and a minor in Marketing. 3. What inspired you to establish Fitness 360 in the UAE? Fitness 360 was actually established in 2010, before I joined the family business. Lals Group identified a market gap in the UAE and decided to open up a health club concept. After opening our first club, it became apparent that a new approach 26

The Source

al majlis was required and we followed through by delivering a ladies only concept, express concept, and are currently working on a few others. 4. There are many choices in this country when considering a fitness club; what separates Fitness 360 from the competition? Fitness 360 was initially launched as ‘Sports Fit’, which was somewhat of a sports rehabilitation center specializing in the rehabilitation of injured clients and reintroducing them into the gym culture. However, in 2012 we decided to rebrand ourselves as Fitness 360; 360 being the key term. It represents a holistic approach to every aspect of health and fitness. At Fitness 360 members are not only encouraged to work out, but to also live a healthy lifestyle outside of the gym. We want to get into the minds of our members and have them understand that healthy living is essential beyond the gym. Ultimately, Fitness 360 is all about affordable fitness for everyone while promoting active lifestyles and community wellbeing. 5. You are expanding at a very aggressive rate; tell us about these plans and whether or not the responses to your services have been beyond your expectations? We have had very positive results with the clubs that we are currently operating and are always looking for new and exciting locations to expand. Our mission is to establish 15 fitness clubs in the GCC by 2018 with a broad range of products that will create the largest group of affordable facilities in the region. By March 2015 we will have 3 more clubs in the UAE.

At Fitness 360, members are not only encouraged to work out, but to also live a healthy lifestyle outside of the gym. We want to get into the minds of our members and have them understand that healthy living is essential beyond the gym.

6. Your father is a very prominent and successful figure on the UAE business landscape; was he an encouraging entity for your own success? Absolutely, other than the fact that I feel business is built into my DNA, everything I have learned and everything I am is because of my father. I am lucky to have a role model who is so dedicated, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about everything he does. 7. You are still very young and no doubt a huge inspiration to other future and present entrepreneurial women in this country; do you have any other projects that you are currently involved in? As the Director of Marketing of Lals Group, I am constantly juggling several projects across all of our brands. But, it’s what makes each day more interesting than the one before. When people ask me what I do, I respond with ‘everything, ’ because whenever an idea comes to mind I explore the different possibilities and then sit down with the rest of the team to brainstorm different ways to execute the plan. 8. I can only imagine how busy a schedule you must keep, but when you do have some free time, how do you most enjoy spending it? Working out is the best way to unwind after a long day at workit is my ‘me time’; 60 minutes of no phone, email or any other distractions! Other than that, I like to spend my free time with family and close friends. 9. Finally, what advice can you give to the many women and men who are pursuing their own dreams? Follow your dreams and take risks - you never know where the road will take you. One shouldn’t fear making mistakes; after all, good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment! I will certainly agree with that statement and I say this, speaking from a great deal of past poor judgment experience! We wish Tanya all the best of luck in her future endeavours and thank her for spending some quality time with us and our readers. The Source

RICHARD LEWIS romancing the keys On Wednesday Al Ain was treated to a wonderful evening of music, The Romance of the Piano, performed by UK classical pianist Richard Lewis at the Municipality Theatre. Part of the Gardens of Sheikh Zayed Festival organised by Elite Music Institute, Al Ain’s new music school, Richard Lewis’s performance was one of the highlights of this season’s musical calendar in Al Ain. Richard came to Al Ain as a guest of Al Ain Evangelical Church, who hosted the evening. “We saw Richard perform in the UK last year”, said Derek Clements of AAEC, “we knew immediately that we wanted to bring him to Al Ain”. When Richard emailed earlier this summer to say he would be passing through Dubai on the way back from performances with the Pretoria Symphony Orchestra, AAEC grabbed the opportunity immediately and asked him to stay for a few days and join the music festival. A prize-winner at Trinity College of Music, London, Richard studied piano with Denis Matthews, Alfred Kitchin and later Peter Feuchtwanger. He also read music at St. John’s College, Cambridge. He now travels internationally, both performing and

teaching. “I’ve loved being in Al Ain”, said Richard, “This is my first time in the UAE and the community here is incredibly warm and welcoming. What a joy to perform here!” The Gardens of Sheikh Zayed was created by Marina Zamfir, Director of Elite Music School and much loved local pianist, Gulmira Abdukhalikova, as an educational festival designed to encourage and inspire children with a love of music. Richard fit well into this schedule, introducing each piece with a two or three minute explanation of the composition of the piece or a fascinating anecdote about the lives of the composers. His relaxed and approachable manner made the evening much more accessible than most classical evenings, perfect for newcomers to the genre.

Keira Knightley opens up about topless photo shoot Back in August of this year, Keira Knightley posed topless for Interview magazine. Now, the British actress has revealed why she chose to go bare for the photographer, Patrick Demarchelier. Talking to The Times newspaper, Keira said: "I've had my body manipulated so many different times for so many different reasons, whether it's paparazzi photographers or for film posters. "That (shoot) was one of the ones where I said: 'OK, I'm fine doing the topless shot so long as you don't make them any bigger or retouch.' Because it does feel important to say it really doesn't matter what shape you are." Well said, Keira. Keira, who graced the November issue of GLAMOUR, also said: "I think women's bodies are a battleground and

Richard started with Schubert’s much loved ‘Impromptu’, filling it with emotion that touched every member of the audience. From the delicate beauty of Chopin’s Nocturne to the haunting notes of Rachmaninov’s Prelude in C sharp minor and the complexities of Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata, Richard’s technical excellence never failed to impress. “It was wonderful!”, said one audience member. “I don’t usually go to classical music concerts, but because this event was free I thought I’d try it out and I really enjoyed it! The music was beautiful”.

photography is partly to blame. Our society is so photographic now, it becomes more difficult to see all of those different varieties of shape." Courtesy: http://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/

Aamir Khan’s season 3 of Satyamev Jayate was a big success compared to the second installment of the same show. It’s strange to see how in spite of having two Bollywood biggies as hosts one show worked while the other continues to struggle. Going by the TVT ratings – the first episode of Satyamev Jayate 3 bagged a 4.9 TVM (Television viewership in millions), and Salman’s Bigg Boss 8 garnered about 7.9 TVM. While the controversial show started on a good note, it could not sustain for too long. However, week after week Aamir Khan continued to get attention of the audience with interesting as well as hard hitting current topics, while viewers began to lose interest in India’s most favourite reality show Bigg Boss 8. House of

Colours to gain independence eating and drinking and in the bathroom with our toilet training programme. We want the children to be confident learners, sharing and caring for each other.

The House of Colours opened its doors in August 2007, managed by the British Director Miss Christine O'Connor, who holds the Nursery Nurses Examination Board certificate (NNEB) with 26 years of Child Care experience. The Nursery caters for young babies and toddlers from 3 months old up to 3.5 years of age. Our aim is to offer positive experiences for all children; to socialise, learn and be creative together, in an international environment, preparing them for their next move to any school setting. From January 2015, we will have the facilities to offer 8 playrooms and 8 classrooms that are safe and colourful. Our children are placed in age appropriate rooms which are well equipped with a range of toys and educational equipment to stimulate the senses and encourage problem solving via our "learning through play" approach.

Staff are well qualified, holding recognised Child Care certificates with additional training in first aid, Pediatric CPR, fire prevention and evacuation procedures. Staff attend regular Personal Professional Development (PPD) in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), to be able to care, observe and plan for each age and stage. A key person is allocated to each baby, toddler, young and older child. The Nursery team plans weekly to encourage children in both free and directed play, with our main focus on 3 prime areas: Communication and Language, Physical Development and their Personal, Social and Emotional self. Children are encouraged to listen, understand and speak English, develop both gross motor skills (large body muscles) in our outdoor play, and fine motor skills (small hand muscles) through cutting, sticking, and using play dough materials,

The 3 prime areas are supported with 4 specific areas: Literacy (reading and writing), Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts Design. We focus on circle times, stories, songs and poems, along with Jolly Phonics which helps to teach children to recognise letter sounds in an interactive way. Learning numbers and shapes in a variety of fun activities, simple science and cooking, being creative with sand and water materials, music and role play encourages the children to use their imaginations to dress up as other people - These 7 areas all add up to a happy well developed child. The weekly planning is placed outside each classroom to encourage parents to also participate in the themed learning topics and many special events throughout each term. Smart boards OR social skills? Computers OR communication and creativity? Paper worksheets OR play and painting? There is a place for a variety of different learning aids. For the very young and the very active learners, the House of Colours Nursery is helping to lay a strong foundation for the children's future.

Saving the

DUGONG

T

he Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), in partnership with Total and Total Abu Al Bukhoosh (ABK), recently launched the dugong education and awareness campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness on the current threats that affect the dugong population found in Abu Dhabi, and how to provide the dugongs with a safe haven to live and breed. During the kick-off of the campaign, Ahmed Baharoon, EAD’s Executive Director, Environmental Information, Science & Outreach Management spoke on behalf of H.E. Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary General of EAD, and Mr. Sultan Al Hajji, Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer, Total E&P UAE, emphasizing the importance of their continuous joint efforts in conserving the dugong population, protecting its habitat, and monitoring and studying their biological and geographical distribution in the UAE’s waters.

Commenting on the launch of the campaign, H.E. Al Mubarak, Secretary General of EAD, said: "Through this campaign, we aim to raise environmental awareness and educate the community on the importance of protecting the dugongs, as the UAE waters are home to the secondlargest population of this species in the

world.” Throughout the coming months, EAD, Total, and Total ABK, will organise interactive educational workshops and information campaigns to educate middleschool and high-school students, the fishing community and boat owners in Abu Dhabi and the Western Region, shoreline industries and the general public. The campaign will also include a public outreach programme through EAD’s social media platforms, along with a number of family-oriented entertaining and educational activities in November 2014, to be held at Mushrif Mall in Abu Dhabi. Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity at EAD, commented: “Since 1999, EAD, Total, and Total ABK, have collaborated in conducting detailed studies on the local dugong population. These studies have provided our teams with the data that helps us better understand the

behaviour and threats against the dugong population. Dugongs are an endangered species and could be threatened with extinction unless we conserve their habitat and prevent human interference.” Mr. Hatem Nuseibeh, President Total E&P UAE and Group Representative in the UAE, commented, “Total UAE and Total Abu Al Bukhoosh are proud to be an ardent supporter in EAD’s dugong conservation program by exclusively sponsoring since its launch in 1999. Thanks to EAD’s efforts, today Abu Dhabi is a leader of international repute hosting the Dugong Secretariat of Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) under United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).” Significant effort has been made by the UAE and EAD in the conservation of the dugong population. In 2002, EAD banned drift net fishing practices in shallow waters to prevent dugongs and turtles from becoming entangled in the nets. On a national front, the UAE issued Federal Law No. 23 and 24 in 1999 to protect dugongs from exploitation. In support of international efforts, the UAE was one of the first Middle Eastern countries to sign the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) agreement in 2007 on the conservation and management of dugongs and their habitat. The Dugong Memorandum of Understanding, which falls under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), is implemented through the CMS Secretariat office hosted by EAD since 2009 on behalf of the UAE’s Government. White peaks and emerald lakes Our guest columnist explores Switzerland’s beautiful Bernese Oberland in all its scenic splendour By: Brenda Oates

A

Swiss holiday conjures up images of snow-capped mountains, alpine meadows, tinkling cowbells and steep cogwheel railways. The good news is, with its location in the craggy, majestic Alps and abundant natural beauty, Switzerland really does look like a picture-perfect postcard.

Our week-long holiday was based in Interlaken, a small town and railway hub between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Much of our time was spent riding mountain railways and cable cars to the peaks, or taking leisurely steamer trips across lakes. On every side, we were surrounded by breath-taking scenery and picturesque 34

views of Swiss villages dotted with traditional flower-decked, “chocolate-box” chalets. We were blessed with fine weather in September, giving us clear panoramas of the mountains and valleys, and fresh alpine air. The three high peaks of the majestic Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau were an ever-present backdrop. Glaciers were visible in the distance, while at ground level, edelweiss and gentian flowers were still blooming before the onset of snow. Walking is a popular pastime along the mountain trails. Those who are more adventurous could take a paragliding flight up high, running along a gentle grass slope until the wind lifts the parachute and you fly, as free as a bird, down to the landing field. I wish I had been brave enough to try it! One day, we took the narrow-gauge railway to Lauterbrunnen, where we changed onto the mountain cog railway, climbing steeply through the fashionable ski resort

Here we found some of the most awe-inspiring alpine scenery, and also came across the finish line of the annual Jungfrau Marathon. Starting in Interlaken, the race is a serious challenge for all 4,000 runners. On a clear day, we took the spectacular cable car ride to the Schilthorn summit, famous for its revolving restaurant with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It starred in the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". On the return journey, we stopped to view the amazing Trummelbach glacier waterfalls. Switzerland is famed for its excellent railways, which always run on time. So, as a respite from the mountains, we took daytrips to Lucerne, on an express train, and to Bern, on a German ICE train.

Souvenirs to bring home include watches, cuckoo-clocks and fine wooden musical boxes. Departing from Zurich airport, we returned home with hundreds of postcardquality photos of beautiful landscapes to remind us of our wonderful alpine holiday. This holiday was arranged by Riviera Travel, tmsriviera.co.uk. Lucerne is a busy lakeside tourist trap surrounded by historical walls and towers. The city’s iconic Chapel Bridge is a covered wooden footbridge spanning diagonally across the river Ruess. Constructed in the first half of the 14th century as part of the city's fortifications, the bridge was decorated with gabled paintings illustrating scenes of Swiss and local history in the 17th century. Unfortunately, most of the bridge and paintings were destroyed in a 1993 fire caused by a dropped cigarette end, Nostalgic steam locomotive at Lauterbrunnen railway station in Jungfrau region

The Young Elites By Marie Lu

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars— they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Riddle ME this! EASIER: 1. What is dead but still grows? 2. What is blue when happy, goes to sleep and wakes each day, and holds the yolk of an egg in its hands? HARDER: 3. What can swim with ease, but cannot walk without strife, what was worshipped and prized by man long, long ago, and wears clothes but cannot clothe itself 4. What has feathers, but cannot fly, has a sharp beak, but cannot bite, and drinks, but cannot keep it in for long? 5. What are the names of large mountains, which cannot hold themselves upright, and move along the plains with their people? By Urhum Habib Answers: hair, the sky, sailboat, quill, sand dunes

The dusky night looming over the illuminated capital. The vibrant fireworks blistering the sky. Green, white, red and black glorified by the magnificent Marina. Nothing compared to the beauty circling overhead. A sense of honour and patriotism filled our hearts to the brim. National Day, the day of all days.
