A question that has intrigued mankind since the dawn of our existence, been defined by philosophers, poets and even scientists and yet there is no one clear answer to this age old query that can satisfy humanity the world over. Who am I to be so selfish as to decline an attempt at finding the answer and cascading my personal discoveries into the infinite pool of explanations d’amour? So here I go: Love is an unpredictable, inexplicable rush of temporary insanity that washes over us with hurricane force, leaving behind a state of existence that can range from numbness to hypersensitivity. There is no known antidote or vaccine to protect us from its powerful grip and no human can or should be spared the ravages of love under any circumstances. But alas, there is a solution and cure that has been available long before recorded history and is applied the world over – it’s called marriage! I can’t wait for my wife’s reaction after reading my contribution to the mystery of love, and no matter what the repercussions may be, I must stand firm in my belief that love is worth fighting for! On a much more serious note, with so much evil gripping the world today, Valentine’s Day arrives not a second too soon, as a reminder that there is and can never be enough love on earth. As I read the papers and watch the news – especially lately – I am overwhelmed with a heartrending sense of hopelessness and loss of faith in mankind. With so much hatred and malice around us, for many, it is a call for revenge but exacting revenge, contrary to popular belief, achieves very little in the long run. By seeking revenge we place ourselves on the same level as our enemies and the simple truth of the matter is that we should not have enemies at all; only the unfortunate souls whose complicated, tragic existence triggers our most profound empathy and forgiveness! This may well be sound advice but for most of us, it is very difficult to comprehend, little lone execute. So hurry up and arrive Valentine’s Day and may love’s warrior, Cupid, penetrate the hearts of all, putting an end to the perpetual search for loves meaning and render us content reveling in the spoils of its wake! Spread the LOVE and happy reading…

ASK THE TEACHER

I am a mother of 3 children, aged 6, 8, and 11. Every day, when my children come home from school, I attempt to ask each of them, "What did you learn at school today?" I am given the same answer day after day, "Nothing!" What are some strategies I can use to extract more information from my children?

about other things they did during the day. ‘What’ you say is critical. Asking a concrete question is easier to answer than one in the abstract; ‘Who did you sit with during your phonics lesson?’ is easier than ‘How was your day?’ or ‘What did you learn?’ Information that you already have about your child’s day will help enormously. Schools should be providing you with a wealth of detail about what your children are learning.

ASK THE DR.

Dear Dr. A friend of mine is suffering from "Shortness of Breath" and this generally occurs two or three times in a fortnight and his symptom is not a direct result of physical activity, but he smokes and drinks occasionally. Is this condition an indication of a more serious problem?

A man in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, China, decided to pay for his new 51,800 Yuan (£5,552) car using just coins. According to the salesman, the customer warned him about the currency he intended to use before placing the order, so he can’t really be annoyed. ‘He said he’ll pay in petty cash. I thought it was old and small Dear Reader, Thank you for your question. Shortness of breath has many possible causes some of which are serious and others not. A few diseases that can cause shortness of breath are heart disease, lung disease, anemia, allergies, and anxiety. Your friend would be wise to stop smoking/drinking and see a doctor. The 51,800 Yuan the man used was made up of 0.1 Yuan, 0.5 Yuan, and 1 Yuan coins, with the 20,000 Yuan deposit alone filling four nylon bags that weighed 150kg. The auto shop had to organise eight sales people to spend the whole afternoon counting the money. According to the contract, the customer will pay the remaining price in three days and they’ll be hoping he brings a cheque. The coins were from the man’s business but he did not specify what that business was.

Seatbelts a must in all Abu Dhabi school buses In its bid to enhance the safety and security of its young passengers, the School Transport Executive Committee in Abu Dhabi announced on Monday that all school buses must have seatbelts.

audiometry and electrocardiogram. As per these regulations, the operators will bear Dh750 fee to issue the applicant a medical certificate valid for 2 years (if applicant does not leave UAE on vacation).

This is one of many new regulations passed.

Those applicants who return from vacations outside UAE will have to pass medical fitness examinations for a fee of Dh250 paid by the operator. These examinations will be limited to basic medical and preventive tests to ensure that the applicants are free from any contagious diseases or conditions that may affect public safety.

All school bus operators shall equip new buses, prior registration, with three-point safety seat belts, regardless of the number of its seats. The regulation also requires the operators of current school buses, which have 22 seats and below, to provide threepoint safety seat belts in their buses. Operators of current school buses that have more than 22 seats must equip their school buses with two-point safety seat belts. School bus drivers will also have to pass operational medical examinations when applying for the job. The Committee has also adopted an integrated training

program to qualify school bus drivers and escorts. The Committee adopted the operational medical tests as a prerequisite for school bus driver job applicants to determine their medical fitness to practice this profession. Conducted by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), the medical tests will include vision check-up (visual acuity and colour vision), complete blood count, Hepatitis B surface antigen, fasting glucose, glycated haemoglobin, renal function test,

“The committee adopted these new regulations after conducting a thorough study, and is found to be pertinent to the safety and security of our students,” stated brigadier Hussein Al Harthi, director of Traffic and Patrol Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police and Chairman of the School Transport Executive Committee.

UAE traffic council to UAE : the most connected country in the link driving licence to Middle East & North Africa - DHL report residency visa

Federal Traffic Council (FTC) has recommended linking renewal of driving licences with residency visas for drivers of taxis and buses, reported Arabic dailies. At its meeting on Monday, the FTC suggested driving licence for professional drivers of taxis and buses is linked with the renewal of their residence visa, according to Emarat Al Youm and Al Khaleej. This means validity of the licences depend on period of residence visas for drivers. However, there is no change in the validity of personal driving licence. Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zaffin, Head, FTC, and Assistant Commander of Dubai Police, In-charge Operations, said the council discussed a proposal put forth by RTA for protection of rights of institutions and individuals who hire people, issue them licences, and then allow them to work elsewhere. He added that linking validity of drivers’ licences to their residence visa would preserve the rights of all parties.

The United Arab Emirates is the most connected country in the Middle East and North Africa as it is ranked 12th out of 140 countries worldwide, jumping six places since 2013, according to the third edition of the Global Connectedness Index, GCI, report by DHL. The report documents that global connectedness, measured by cross-border flows of trade, capital, information and people from 140 countries, has recovered most of its losses incurred during the financial crisis.

The depth of international interactions – the proportion of interactions that cross national borders – gained momentum in 2013 after its recovery had stalled the previous year. Nonetheless, trade depth, as a distinct dimension of globalisation, continues to stagnate, and the overall level of global connectedness remains quite limited, implying that there could be gains of trillions of US Dollars if boosted in future years.

Gaelic football kicks off in Al Ain By Caymon Flynn Chairman of Al Ain Gaelic Athletic Association

The Al Ain GAA club hosted their annual GAA tournament at the Al Ain Amblers Rugby Club last Friday. For those of you who are not aware, GAA stands for Gaelic Athletic Association. It is Ireland's largest sporting organisation and is celebrated as one of the great amateur sporting associations in the world today. The GAA is a volunteer led, community based organisation that promotes Gaelic games such as Football. It is part of the Irish consciousness and plays an influential role in Irish society. The number of Irish expats currently living in Al Ain is at an all-time high hence this huge event. 38 teams from all over the gulf participated. Dedicated teams travelled from Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Dubai, Sharjah, Riyadh, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi to take part in the tournament. There were over 500 people in attendance. It was Al Ain’s first time to hold both a men and ladies football tournament with competitions ranging from senior level right down to junior. This confirms the continued growth of the Irish community across the gulf. The tournament kicked off at 8 am and

continued right through until almost 8pm. All three pitches were in action for the entire day. Both players and spectators had an eventful day. There was music, food and of course lots of entertainment. The award ceremony kick started the after party. Winning teams collected their silverware and celebrated their success with live music and entertainment provided by the Paddy Man, Ireland’s very own one man band. Days like this are never possible without the help and support of so many people. The Al Ain GAA club is very fortunate to have so many committed people involved. For those who volunteered their precious time on the day to help out, it was greatly appreciated. It certainly did not go unnoticed. Every other club complimented the organization of the tournament. It is safe to say all the hard work paid off and a wonderful day was had. A special thanks to the Al Ain Amblers Rugby club for the excellent facilities. The pitches were in pristine condition and the service on the day was great. The other clubs who had travelled from near and far were pleased to have an abundance of food and water to keep the energy levels up throughout

the day. We are very lucky to have such a great amenity at our doorstep. If anyone is interested in getting involved in the GAA club here in Al Ain, we always welcome new members. We have many nationalities that take part, including English, American and South Africans. Ladies train Monday and Wednesday at 6.30pm and Men train Monday and Wednesday at 7.30pm.

La Poupee beauty center affordable beauty for everyone

W

hen I first moved to Al Ain three years ago, there were not many spa and salon options in town. I spent many weekends venturing to Dubai or Abu Dhabi in search of stylists and beauticians who understood what I wanted and kept up with the latest beauty and wellness trends. However, in a few short years, Al Ain has seen a growing number of beauty havens. Each offers a unique atmosphere and specialty services. One such haven is La Poupee Beauty Center, centrally located behind Jimi Mall. 14

The Source

La Poupee focuses on providing quality treatments using trusted products such as L’Oreal and Biolage. They offer discounts for teachers, students and hospital workers and a variety of packages at reasonable prices that leave you feeling beautiful, not broke. The menu includes a dizzying selection of hair, skin, body and nail treatments. I was led upstairs to a candlelit therapy room, where I had the pleasure of experiencing LaPoupee’s unique Lava Shell Massage, which incorporates self-heating shells that ease muscle and joint aches and pains. My therapist, Ederly explained that similar to hot stone massage, Lava Shell is an ideal winter treatment to give added warmth to the client, but it’s more hygienic because the shells are non-porous and do not absorb oil, skin cells or bacteria. Ederly used lavender essential oil to help the smooth, hot shells glide over my skin and pressed them into pressure points to relieve tension. She finished with a soothing scalp massage that left me feeling more relaxed than I have felt in ages. Next, I was ushered into the nail room where I was to be treated to a long lasting gel manicure and pedicure. The most difficult part was selecting a polish color, as they have so many fun hues to choose

from, but the nail technicians, Iris and Alicia, helped me pick the perfect shade of pink. As I allowed the ladies to work their magic on my fingers and toes, I looked out the window and noticed a steady stream of clients coming, indicating that this spa is definitely a local favorite. After my polish was meticulously applied, I got to experience another one of La Poupee’s original treatments, the moisturizing paraffin hand and foot treatment. Let me stop and mention that I have never been a fan of paraffin treatments where you must dip your hands and feet into tubs of scalding hot wax used by countless other strangers before you. You can imagine my relief when Iris explained that she would use a far more hygienic solution. She brought over an electricity-free heating chamber which heats single-use bags of paraffin, using a mineral reaction and saltwater. Once the paraffin is completely melted and brought to a comfortable temperature, your hands and feet are placed inside and allowed to absorb the moisturizing benefits for about ten minutes. Then, the hardened paraffin is neatly removed and disposed of, and hands and feet are left feeling baby soft and smelling lovely. I enjoyed every minute of my afternoon at La Poupee thanks to their friendly service and unique treatments. To find out more about services, prices and promotions call La Poupee at 03 780 1090.

Contact lenses and Eye health

M By Dr. Nadia Hussain

any people are trying out contact lenses for the first time so they can give up their spectacles. If you do decide to invest in a pair, there are many things that can be done to extend the life of the lenses and still protect your eyes.

The type of lenses you have determines the level of care. Among the two common types are the disposable extended-wear soft lenses and the conventional soft lenses. The former needs the least care and the latter requires the most care. You should be careful when using lenses because you don’t want to have any issues with your eyes, which are one of the most important organs. HAND CARE Always wash your hands before you handle contact lenses. Use mild soaps and loations rather than perfumed ones because these leave residues on your hands which then transfer to your lenses. This can cause blurred vision or irritate your eyes. Dry your hands with a clean towel. Keep your fingernails short to avoid damaging the lenses or scratching your eyes. MAKEUP If you use hair spray, do so before you put in the lenses. If you want to apply makeup, do so after you put in the lenses. This will help avoid getting makeup on your lenses. But when it is time to remove makeup, remove your lenses first.

16

The Source

To correctly place the lens in your eye, place a contact lens on the tip of your finger so that it forms a cup. Look at the contact lens from the side. If the cup looks like it is flaring out at the top and has a lip, the contact lens is inside out. If it looks like the letter "U", the contact lens is right side out.

CLEANING LENSES Different types of lenses need different levels of care and products such as disinfecting solution, eye drops and enzymatic cleaners. Whatever your eye care professional recommends is what is suitable. Some people consider using tap water safe for lenses but this is very harmful because there can be bacteria which can lead to vision damaging infections. Clean each contact by rubbing it gently with your index finger in the palm of your other hand. Lightly rubbing your contact removes surface buildup but being rough can tear the lens. Wash your contact lens case regularly with sterile solution or hot tap water and let it air dry. The case should be replaced every three months. WEARING THE LENS Only wear your contacts for as long as it is recommended. The safest soft contact lenses are the daily disposable ones but you should consult your eye care professional to discover your best option. Make a lens schedule chart so you don’t forget to change your lenses.

REMEMBER: • Never wear someone else’s contact lenses because you can easily get an infection this way. • Unless you wear extended wear contact lenses, never sleep with the lenses in. When your eyes are closed, there is not enough oxygen reaching your eye’s delicate tissues and the lenses are a barrier. • Tips of solution bottles should never touch anything including your fingers or the lens itself because this can lead to contamination and infection. • Consult your eye care professional if you experience eye irritation and remove the lenses to avoid infections. If you experience any of the following; sudden vision loss, persistent blurred vision, light flashes, eye pain, infection, swelling, unusual redness, or irritation, consult your physician immediatly. For all eye health needs, visit Al Noor Hospital and receive state-of-the-art best practice treatment.

stuff for men

DO’S AND DON’TS FOR V.D

M

ore often than not, I do my best to be a good husband to my wonderful wife but God knows that I have blown a few attempts at pleasing my angel on the sweetest day of the year. The following list is my attempt at sharing the V.D. do’s and don’ts with the men of Al Ain in hopes of helping my brothers put Don Juan, Prince Charming and Lance Romance to shame this year – good luck gentlemen!

THE VALENTINE'S DAY DON'TS 1. DON'T FORGET. This is the absolute worst thing you could do! 2. DON'T BUY KITCHEN APPLIANCES. A new blender is not—I repeat, is not— romantic. 3. DON'T DO THE SAME THING YOU DID LAST YEAR. Even if it worked well, your partner will appreciate something new and different. 4. DON'T OVERSPEND. Particularly if you share a bank account and a credit card with your sweetheart, breaking the bank is a bad idea. 5. DON'T GIVE HER A GENERIC CARD. She will not be impressed with the nicest card from the local Hallmark if you just sign your name. Add a note about how much you love her, how much she means to you, and any other positive feelings you have. The personal part is what is romantic to her, not how much lace is on the card or how much you spent on it. 6. DON'T DO GUY STUFF. This is her night, so stay away from the guy stuff, and put her first. 18

The Source

7. DON'T SPEND THE NIGHT ONLINE. Too many of us tend to get in front of the computer late at night for gaming, chatting or other online stuff. For this one night, leave the computer off and focus on your woman. She will be grateful for your undivided attention.

THE VALENTINE'S DAY DO'S 1. SEND A GIFT TO WORK. This is a welcome idea that will show her in front of her peers that she is loved and remembered on Valentine's Day. 2. MAKE A HOMEMADE VALENTINE. Your own little verse would add just the right touch. Taking time to do something out of the ordinary is romantic. 3. COOK FOR HER. Breakfast in bed or cooking a romantic dinner for two will let her know you were willing to go that extra mile. 4. TURN OFF THE ELECTRONICS. Valentine's Day is not a time for interruptions; turn off the phone, the Palm or Blackberry, and focus your attention on your significant other. 5. WRITE HER A LOVE LETTER. This is not an email, a text message or a card, but a real love letter. In your own handwriting, tell her what she really means to you. Tell her why you would choose her all over again if you had to.

6. WATCH A CHICK FLICK. Sure, you'd rather be watching the latest 007 film but she'll appreciate you sitting through a romantic movie. 7. OFFER HER A MASSAGE. Many Valentine's Day experts recommend a day spa gift certificate as a great gift option for your sweetheart, but I think a personal massage is a wonderful alternative. While I know these ideas sound like a lot of work, it is important to not overdo it. Don't try to cram too much into the day or into the evening. A leisurely pace is an important component of making Valentine's Day great for your woman, so relax and enjoy!

Bullying is no joke and in fact leads to and is the direct cause of approximately 4,400 child suicides per year! What if these were your children? What will it take for us as a society to attack this problem at the source and end the incredible waste of human life in a demographic that is our future and the foundation of our continuance? Thanks to the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, we have an organization that is the driving force behind the necessary awareness and is bringing it to Al Ain in the form of a Parenting Program. Their Parenting Program is comprised of a series of engaging parenting talks and classes offered by world leaders in Early Childhood Development, designed to support and empower parents and other caregivers of young children and to provide information on best practices that promote healthy outcomes for children. The Source was on hand at the most recent parenting talk in 20

The Source

January featuring a discussion on bullying hosted by Dr. Younshin Kim, Associate Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry at University of California, San Francisco, Director of The Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASD) and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs).

The following are the highlights of the discussion:

It was a common belief that bullying is a benign and “normal” part of the child’s experience. Furthermore, some people

Dr. Younshin Kim have incorrectly suggested that children who learn to manage bullying will have enhanced character and no adverse consequences. This is not true! Research in the last 3-4 decades suggests otherwise. •

Bullying is a developmental toxin – it disrupts development for all who are involved.

There is cumulating evidence that compared to children not involved with bullying, children involved with bullying have increased risk for adverse psychosocial outcomes including school absenteeism, depression, suicidality, later legal problems, etc.

Bullying behaviors seems to be an antecedent of more serious youth violence; and

Bullying is a modifiable condition and we can make significant positive changes in the lives of children.

In short, bullying is NOT normal behavior and it creates problems for all children involved: victims, perpetrators and bystanders. Therefore, it is critically important to raise awareness about bullying among parents and teachers, as well as children, so we can stop it now and prevent it from happening in the future.

Some signs to look out for in your child when he/she is experiencing bullying Children are often reluctant to talk about their bullying experiences with grown-ups because: •

They feel embarrassed;

They think it is their fault

They think that talking to grown-ups is “tattling” or “snitching.”

Sudden onset of school phobia or school refusal;

Unexplained somatic symptoms including headaches, stomachache, backache, dizziness, etc;

Unexplained performance;

Changes in mood, onset of anxiety, difficulty sleeping and/or concentration Stop spending time with his/her peers and friends.

WHEN YOUR OWN CHILD IS THE BULLY It is wise to seek help for your child if they continue to bully other children despite your (parents and/or teachers) best efforts to stop him/her for these reasons: •

To protect the victims of your child’s bullying

To protect your child who is bullying others as they are not only hurting other children, but also hurting themselves. Risks include:

suicidal ideations and attempts, aggressive behavior, legal problems in the future and vocational and interpersonal failures in the adulthood. In the case of persistent bullying behavior, it’s likely that bullying is not the only problem the child is facing. Other problems often include: impulsivity, attention problems, learning difficulties, psychiatric illness, etc. THE DIFFERENT STAGES AND TYPES OF BULLYING Bullying takes various forms, including: EXCLUSION: forced isolation from a social group, including being left out of games and activities and/or refusing to talk to or answer the victim

including using the internet, cell phones, and text messages and other electronic means to spread rumors, support social exclusion, share insulting or humiliating data or information and otherwise cause pain and suffering using electronic media. SHORT TERM EFFECTS: •

Depression, a fear of going to school, decreased educational outcomes, eating problems, suicidal ideations and behaviors

Unexplained somatic symptoms.

Long term effects:

Victims and perpetrators are at increased risk for the later development of serious and dangerous adverse outcomes, including psychiatric illness, daily smoking, alcohol abuse, carrying and using weapons, eating disorders, and runaway episodes.

Higher rates of depression, social phobia, agoraphobia and poor selfesteem in their adulthood.

VERBAL ABUSE: name calling, threatening the victim verbally PHYSICAL ABUSE: causing other pain, suffering or intimidation, damaging or injuring persons COERCION: forcing others to do work for someone else, such as homework or taking of items such as school supplies and snacks; forcing students give up money CYBERBULLYING: includes bullying behavior among students encompassing a wide array of on-line activities,

• Perpetrators have an increased risk of criminal behavior by the time they reach their mid-twenties, with a majority having at least one criminal conviction and more than onethird having multiple convictions. They tend to fail to hold jobs, and maintain meaningful interpersonal relationships. Let’s make bullying a public issue for everyone in the community and through increased awareness stop this menace in its tracks once and for all! The Source

rooke Bauer is Al Ain’s very own superwoman. In addition to being a wife, pregnant mother of 4 children under 4, a member of the women’s contact rugby team, the Al Ain Amblers, cofounder and current manager of the local Al Ain Farmer’s Market alongside her husband, she is also a doula, childbirth educator, placenta specialist, and breastfeeding counselor. She gives us the insider info on what a doula is and the benefits of having one. 1. WHAT IS A DOULA? A doula is a birth professional that provides support to an expectant family during pregnancy, specifically during birth. They are non-medical and do not offer any clinical tasks but instead, offer practical and continued support throughout your pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum period. 2. WHY DID YOU BECOME A DOULA? I became a doula after my daughter was born 4.5 years ago. I have always been passionate about human rights, particularly

women’s health and human rights, and during my first pregnancy and birth I learned that women are sometimes not given the rights that they deserve during their pregnancy and birth. This inspired me to help change the culture of birthing. I have been active globally to help women feel empowered with regards to their health, birth, and parenting. 3. WHAT SORT OF TRAINING HAVE YOU HAD? I am a certified doula with Nurturing Birth in the UK as well as a certified Doula and Childbirth Educator with AMANI out of Saudi Arabia. Both of my certifications are focused on women centered care but the AMANI certification brought an Islamic perspective to my training that is applicable to the mothers that I support here in the Middle East. I am a certified ICAN (International Cesarean Awareness Network) leader so am able to provide information specific to caesarean and natural birth after caesarean or VBAC. I am also a certified breastfeeding counselor with La Leche League and am a certified placenta specialist with IPEN out of the UK. I am currently in the process of becoming certified in birth trauma support to provide

support for mothers who have been affected by their birth experience and might be experiencing post partum depression or PTSD. 4. HOW MANY BIRTHS HAVE YOU ATTENDED? By the end of this month I will have attended my 60th birth here in the UAE. I currently support mothers around the UAE and, at times, I support mothers who live overseas via Skype. 5. DO YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH COMPLICATED BIRTHS SUCH AS VBAC, BREECH, OR BIRTH MULTIPLES? I have attended many types of births from scheduled cesarean sections to non medicated, home, and water births. 6. WHAT TYPE OF PAIN RELIEFS OR INTERFERENCES DO YOU SUPPORT? I am there to fully support and serve the family. While many mothers that seek out doula support are hoping to have a non medicated, natural birth, that isn’t the only type of birth I support. I firmly believe that every mother, regardless of her choices, should feel supported, empowered, and well cared for. Smartphone by using it as a smart home gadget Just because your old smartphone is a couple generations old doesn’t mean it can’t be put to good use. When you get down to it, even the most outdated phone is still a palm-sized computer stuffed with advanced sensor tech. So instead of throwing it away or reselling it for less than what you paid originally, why not repurpose it? There are dozens of incredible Android and iOS apps that can transform your phone into a useful smart home fixture, as well as a myriad of low-cost “appcessories” that can add extra functionality to your device. Below you’ll find a quick roundup of the best ones around. ManythingManything (iOS) Manything is a free iOS app that can convert your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad into a Wi-Ficonnected security camera. Then, you can use a second iOS device as your mobile monitor or opt to keep an eye on things from the Manything webapp. But it’s more than just a security camera; it’s also got it’s own IFTTT channel, so you can link it to a huge range of web services and connected devices. Salient eyeSalient Eye (Android) Much like Manything, Salient Eye turns your phone or tablet into a network-connected security cam; the only big difference is that it works with Android devices instead of Apple ones (though an iOS version is in the works). It’s completely free to download and use and comes with a boatload of useful features, such as auto-capture on

motion detection, email and text alerts, a sound alarm, and a decent chunk of free online storage space. Cloud baby monitorCloud Baby Monitor (iOS) There are a handful of different of baby monitor apps in the App Store, there are a few that boast advanced features and functionality that set them apart. Cloud Baby Monitor is one of those apps. In addition to live-streaming video footage, the app also supports twoway audio transmission so you can hear (and talk to) your baby; music playback so you can play your little bundle of joy a lullaby; and adjustable brightness controls so you can keep an eye on the crib in complete darkness. Dormi baby monitorDormi (Android) For a one-time price of just seven bucks, Dormi will take any Android phone or tablet running Gingerbread version 3.2 or greater and put its Internet connectivity and advanced video and audio sensors to good use. Once you’ve got it installed, you just plug the device into the wall and let it run like a regular baby monitor. From there, you can use your primary phone to monitor audio or video at any point, or simply configure the app to send you automatic alerts when your baby wakes up. WhatsApp begins testing new voice calling feature WhatsApp has rolled out its new free voicecalling feature to a few users in India which appears to be available on invite-only basis, as of now. The invite-only basis basically means that users will get a call through WhatsApp from someone who already has the feature updated. The feature is also restricted to Android only and you will need the updated 2.11.508 version to access the app. A report by GSM Arena pointed out that one Reddit user called pradnesh07 was 26

WiseLabs LLC, Bemo plugs into your old iPhone or Android device and transforms it into a fully functional smart thermostat. The device itself is only about the size of a credit card and works as a sort of bridge between your phone and the HVAC wiring in your wall. Once you’ve got it all rigged up, all that’s left is to download the Bemo app and fire it up. WiseLabs’ custombuilt software can perform just about all the same functions you’d find in a purpose-built smart thermostat from Nest, Honeywell, and the like — remote control from your main smartphone, smart scheduling, habit learning, energy monitoring, and even proximity-based activation settings that can turn on the heat or AC before you get home. Rico smart homeRico (iOS) Rico doesn’t necessarily need a smartphone in order to function, but when you pop in one of your old devices, it transforms into a highly-capable smart home hub. On it’s own, a slew of embedded sensors allow the device to operate as a motion detector, thermometer, humidity sensor, smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, and even an Internet access point for connected devices. If you happen to have a dusty old smartphone to put inside, however, you can give Rico a handful of additional functions. Put one inside, and the device can take advantage of your old phone’s speaker, microphone, HD camera, 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, BlueTooth, and processor. Source: http://www.digitaltrends.com/

f a dream vacation, travelling in style, combined with any imaginable wellness or beauty treatment is on your to do list, then we’ve found an entrepreneur and organization that will promise you all of the above and so much more. Meet Nadim Zidan, an enthusiastic, charming and extremely energetic young man, whose innovation and vision is revolutionizing the fusion of travel, beauty and wellness.

The Source met up with Nadim for an exclusive glimpse at Hollywood Stars and is introducing this fantastic concept to our Al Ain readers. Tell us about Hollywood Stars! “Hollywood Stars medical and leisure tourism has a unique approach to the tourism industry, whereby we combine travel and wellness in a style akin to the stars, turning our clients travel adventures into magical moments unlike anything they have ever experienced. We create a ‘WOW’ effect, from luxurious surroundings to fitness, adventure and all types of beauty and wellness treatments. Our philosophy of travel does not simply focus on the destination, it encompasses every small detail of the journey, leaving our clients satisfied, refreshed and feeling every bit the celebrity we believe they are. After all, at Hollywood Stars, our mission is to treat every client like a Hollywood Star!” How long have you lived in the UAE? “I am originally from Syria but have been here for 12 years, 10 of which were spent in Al Ain.” Have you always worked in the tourism industry? "As a much younger man, I worked selling cameras and photographing fashion models. I later moved into banking and spent a very aggressive 10 years climbing the corporate ladder and receiving the prestigious ‘Banker of the Year’ award just two days before my departure from the industry to pursue my new passion.” What inspired Hollywood Stars? “It all began while completing my MBA in Zurich in 2010. Extensive travelling, coupled with my experience as a photographer and awareness of the privacy concerns - especially for women - in regards to cosmetic surgery, led me to recognize a market gap that I felt I had both the passion and enthusiasm to capitalize on. The result was Hollywood Stars, the perfect opportunity to unite tourism, adventure and

complete beauty and wellness packages.” How long has the company been operating and to what response? “We have been in operation for just under a year, starting in March of 2014 and the response coupled with success has been simply outstanding!” Tell us a little more about the types of packages you offer. “Although our main focus revolves around beauty and wellness vacations, we cater to any type of travel desires a client may have and strategically plan and tailor the package to every fine detail, ensuring maximum satisfaction. We also provide treatment abroad for serious health conditions such as cancer, heart surgery and liver transplants, just to name a few. In these particular cases, we spare no expense, ensuring our clients arrive at a first class facility that not only provides state of the art medical care, but also places them in a surrounding conducive to both physical and emotional recovery. We are members of the MTA (Medical Tourism Association), based in the USA and recognized as ‘Golden Facilitators’, the highest possible achievement for the private sector.” Tell us about your vision for the company and where you would like to take it in the future.

service provider in the UAE, boasting the highest level of professionalism and integrity that garners the utmost respect from our clients, competitors and the community.” “We began with an office in Dubai and after a very short and successful period of operating, we are drafting plans to extend our reach to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the neighbouring GCC.” You’ve had a great run of success thus far with Hollywood Stars; what advice would you offer to anyone else starting a company? “I am a firm believer that both inspiration and perspiration play key roles in the success of any business but there is another very important component that is essential in today’s saturated and fiercely competitive markets – INNOVATION! Originality and uniqueness are of paramount importance if one aims to succeed, little lone survive, in today’s tough business climate.” Nadim has certainly brought originality to the table with the conception of Hollywood Stars and we wish him all the best as he continues on the road to providing healing adventure to his many clients. Amal Clooney responds perfectly Amal Clooney, first and foremost, is a highpowered human rights lawyer, but Mrs. George Clooney is also quickly making a name for herself as a fashionista...on and off the red carpet.

Shakira gives birth to second child, a baby boy The Colombian-born singer and former coach of The Voice has given birth to her second child, the second son for her and longtime love Gerard Piqué, in Spain.

Bobbi Kristina Brown hospitalized Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of the late Whitney Houston, remains hospitalized in a hospital near Atlanta on Saturday after being found unresponsive in a bathtub in the home she shares with husband Nick Gordon. Her father, Bobby Brown, and his nephew and her cousin, Jerod Brown, who goes by the name YF Kennedy, are en route to see her The 21-year-old's hospitalization occurred almost three years to the day her mother died at age 48 after being found unresponsive in a bathtub in a hotel room. She died of accidental drowning, spurred by cocaine use and heart disease. 30

Her health status has not been confirmed by hospital officials. Police are investigating the incident. "Krissi doesn't do drugs," he added. "She hasn't been drinking or doing drugs and she's cut down on cigarettes. She's been trying to get her music together and keep her voice clean. Her voice is so beautiful." YF Kennedy talked about how she has been coping with the tragic loss. "She's still been going through the grieving stages but is trying to keep her spirits up," he said. "She's been going to the gym every day with her husband and trying to be happy. She swims a lot."

Just this week she was spotted wearing a fabulous red leather coat in the airport on the way to the European Court of Human Rights where she is representing Armenia, but some felt her outfit in the airport was more noteworthy than the job she was jetsetting to do! So when a reporter from The Telegraph asked her in court who she was wearing, she gave the best response. Pointing to her legal robes, she said, "I'm wearing Ede & Ravenscroft."

STEPPING BACK INTO ANTIQUITY Finding yourself alone inside a pyramid is now a real possibility

A

fter the revolutionary chaos of the past few years, many people will have struck Egypt off their list of must-see places for the time being. But there’s an upside for travellers: low visitor numbers.

Egypt’s tourism industry has been decimated since 2011, with income plunging so low that the Antiquities Ministry has struggled to pay thousands of staff. Tourist hotspots such as the market in central Luxor emptied out as holidaymakers shunned Egypt in favour of destinations not plagued by social unrest and travel warnings. Against this backdrop of turmoil, I’ll admit I was taken aback when my husband suggested Cairo as a getaway, saying he’d heard the hotels were quiet (and cheap), and the historic sites uncrowded. Less than two weeks later, we found ourselves gazing at the Great Pyramid of Giza, awestruck in admiration. And sure enough: the sense of wonder surrounding the magnificent, ancient pyramids is much easier to experience when the site isn’t overrun with tour groups. Part of the glory of the pyramids is their magical atmosphere, and watching the shadows lengthen on these extraordinary monuments in their glorious setting is made all the more special

when you’re not competing with other tourists. ENORMITY OF CAIRO We travelled to Egypt with our children after I satisfied myself that tensions appeared to be easing. What I wasn’t prepared for was the intensity of Cairo. One of the world’s most densely populated cities, the capital is huge (with a population in excess of 16 million), and driving through the sprawling, chaotic metropolis is a hair-raising experience. But while Cairo is noisy, polluted and disorganised, it’s also incredibly vibrant, colourful and, above all, alive. As we crossed the Nile – the river on which the first ‘package holiday’ tourists travelled in 1869 – I peered out the window to take in its impressive wideness, then hastily retreated as we passed the rubbish piled up in Giza along the banks of the canal. Nine kilometres from the Nile, on the edge of the desert, we arrived at the Pyramids, built by the ancient Egyptians as tombs for the pharaohs and their queens. Our accommodation (The Mercure Cairo Le Sphinx Hotel) was indeed great value, and set in the most amazing location: at the swimming pool, you literally stare up at a pyramid from your sun lounger. You almost have to pinch yourself to truly believe you’re swimming at the foot of the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. At night, after the pyramids have been absorbed into the darkness, I recommend viewing the sound and light show from the rooftop terrace.

I was prepared for hassle from tour ‘guides’ and other touts, so wasn’t surprised when our taxi driver suddenly thrust his mobile phone into my husband’s hands so his friend could attempt to sell us a tour; or when the hotel driver we hired took us less than a mile, to a stable, where we ended up shelling out more money for four-legged transportation (one camel, one horsedrawn cart, with several stable hands and a guide) to see the pyramids. But, actually, the ‘hassle factor’ wasn’t as bad as I’d feared, especially considering how desperately people need the business. Nobody leapt into our taxi on the approach road to the pyramids and demanded to be employed, and everyone we met was friendly and warm – just trying to make a living. At Cairo’s Grand Bazaar the next day, there was even a sense of humour amid the kaleidoscope of shops, smells and sights: “Maam, how can I take all your money?” one vendor joked with a cheeky glint in his eye.

my world GUIDED TOUR The downside for me was realising that the animals used to ferry visitors around the pyramids are most likely mistreated. Our guide, on the other hand, was excellent, engaging our young boys with illuminating stories and drawing triangular diagrams in the sand to demonstrate how the pyramids were constructed.

in history by Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Mark Antony and Napoleon left me feeling really inspired. As did the fact the biggest pyramid was the tallest structure in the world for close to 4,000 years. The Burj Khalifa, it seems, has some way to go.

During our two-hour tour, we rode past the limestone Sphinx (the oldest known monumental sculpture and largest monolith statue in the world) and stood alongside the pyramids, admiring their advanced geometry and massive scale. We also climbed inside one of the smaller pyramids (claustrophobic and hot, but glad we did it), and marvelled at the carvings inside the tomb of Queen Meresankh III. Not everyone enjoys their visit: there’s litter clinging to the fence and the touts are out in force, plying camel rides, souvenirs and refreshments. Plus, when you get there, it doesn’t initially look like the thousands of photos you’ve seen. While one side of the pyramids faces the desert, the other is right up against a residential neighborhood. The Sphinx literally looks at a Pizza Hut. But the pyramids retain much of their majesty, and I’ll never forget our magical afternoon spent clambouring around the world’s most famous manmade structures. Knowing I was standing at a site visited

DIE AGAIN By Tess Gerritsen The latest enthralling case in Tess Gerritsen's New York Times bestselling Rizzoli & Isles series, the blockbuster books behind the smash hit TNT series.

Boston Detective Jane Rizzoli is on the case of a big game hunter found dead in his apartment, alone with the body of a beautiful white snow leopard he had recently been commissioned to procure and stuff for a high-profile museum in the area. Medical examiner Maura Isles connects the case to a number of seemingly unrelated deaths where the victims have all been found hanging upside down, the hallmark of a leopard's kill.
