alentine’s Day is over, Mother’s day has yet to arrive and people back in Canada – my homeland - are up to their eyeballs in snow, while we watch the thermometer slowly but surely rise into the discomfort zone. But most important of all, I have absolutely nothing to write about in this issue and as much as I have tried to inspire myself, I keep drawing a blank! That’s right Al Ain, I’m temporarily tapped-out, dry, lost for words and yet faced with the burden of having to conjure a 300 – 400 word Director’s note. Sure, I could write about the contents of the magazine but if you’ve been following my past rants, you know I don’t do that – we have a contents page for that! So I will simply write about nothing at all! Now some of you smarty- pants, cerebral types, might already be challenging my strategy by suggesting that nothing actually is something, but you’re wrong! Nothing is NOTHING!

I feel like I've already run out of things not to write about. It's not easy writing about nothing. I'm tempted to bring up something and then pretend it was nothing just to have something to say, but that would be cheating which in turn would be something in and of itself! I think if I'm going to write about nothing, I have to keep it strictly about nothing and not something that has something to do with nothing - just nothing at all. Are you annoyed yet? If you are, don’t sweat it because unbeknownst to the unfortunate reader, I have already arrived at my 300 word quota and can now safely sign off from nothing. Just remember this; if you have nothing to say, keep your mouth shut and if you have nothing to write about, write about nothing, and last but not least, if you’re searching for something to read about, turn the page and begin! Happy reading…

TOMMY Age: Young adult So our little Tommy has now been at the vet almost a week. He's a lovely dog but after some time passes in his foster homes, he begins to get protective of his people and wants them to himself. This is quite common with rescues that have been moved from foster home to foster home. When in public, he is great with children and other dogs. Tommy needs a foster home with no children and with stern foster parents or a single parent who will continue to socialise with him and work on the new unwanted behaviour with our guidance. ASK THE TEACHER

My son is a high energy 6 year old. I have been getting a lot of negative feedback regarding his behaviour at school. His teacher says that he is not able to focus during large or small group activities. She has also mentioned that he is extremely fidgety, distracted, and frequently causes classroom disruptions. I have been doing some research online, and keep coming across ADHD. How do I know if my son does indeed have ADHD? - I sincerely hope not - and what are some strategies that can be used to support him in the classroom and at home? I should mention that I am not a huge fan of the over medicating that is happening across the globe to treat this condition. Many six year olds are full of energy and can struggle to focus when asked to be still and pay attention for long periods of time. Many schools expect young children to sit on the carpet or at tables, for unnecessarily lengthy teacher-led sessions and these are unrealistic expectations, given the age and attention span of these children. Young boys, in particular, need very active learning environments, in which to thrive at this age. I suggest that you start by trying to find out if lessons at your son’s school are varied and age-appropriate, have plenty of opportunities for active learning and take place within a robust behaviour management system. If not, this negative feedback might say far more about the school itself than your son’s behaviour! However, if you believe that behaviour at the school is generally good and that the teacher provides reasonably short and engaging group work activities and is only describing your son specifically in the class, then it is possible that he may need some extra help.

If there is some cause for concern within the usual spectrum of expected behaviours for the age range, then the school would normally be considering referral to its Learning Support Department at this stage. This is where a variety of diagnostic assessments should be available to identify any difficulties your son may be facing and provide some suggestions about how to help overcome them. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a group of behavioural symptoms which include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. ADHD is a very common behavioural disorder and ways of managing it vary widely, from inclass and at-home strategies, behavioural therapy or indeed, medication, depending on each individual child. Medication for ADHD, in particular, has been in the media spotlight for some time and there have been accusations of overmedicating young children, but… I’d recommend not ‘jumping the gun’ with this, in terms of ‘self-diagnosis’ via the internet. Many children go through phases where they are restless or inattentive. This is often completely normal and does not necessarily mean they have ADHD. If your son does have ADHD, the school should consult you at every stage in the assessment and diagnosis process, to agree on the best possible course of action, which may not necessarily include medication at all. Teen loses her job BEFORE she even starts A Texas teenager has been fired from her job at a pizza parlor before she even started after sending out a tweet complaining about the gig and her new boss saw it. In a hilarious Twitter exchange, a twitter user who goes by 'Cella' wrote: 'Ew I star this f*** a** job tomorrow.' The next morning, Robert Waple - the owner of Jet's Pizza in Mansfield, Texas - tweeted at her: 'And....no you don't start that FA job today! I just fired you! Good luck with your no money, no job life!' He was moved to tweet for only the second time since he started the account in 2009. The exchange became an instant hit online. Mr Waple's tweet has been retweeted 3,800 times and favorited more than 4,200. Mr Waple said that one of Cella's future co-

CELEBRITY TWEETS

workers told him about the tweet and he had to log on to check it out himself. After firing Cella, several former employees chimed in to comfort her to say that working at Jet's Pizza wasn't all that great, anyway. One said it was the worst job he ever had. One Twitter user told Mr Waple: 'Just thought you should know I was stoned out of my mind every time I went into work, and your pizza sucks.' He replied: 'Being high would only partly explain how you could deliver a pizza to the wrong house...multiple times. Cella

didn't seem too broken up about getting fired - but was relishing her new-found internet fame after the Twitter exchange went worldwide.

Jet's Pizza in Mansfield, Texas, was where Cella was supposed to start her job on Saturday.

ASK THE DR.

Dear Dr. I went through an inguinal hernia operation on my right side around 10 years ago. I was lifting weights recently and experienced swelling in the region of the operation afterwards. I have since then taken bed rest and relaxed my lifestyle to reduce the swelling but still a slight internal swelling persists. Is this a sign of anything serious? Dear Reader, Your experience suggests it may be another hernia but it may also be something different. I recommend seeing an experienced surgeon to be evaluated. news Woman gets replacements of another woman's credit cards, goes on shopping spree

When Soul Food Met Soul Music: The Soul-N-Soul Event The enigma of the event drew in everyone who saw the flyer. The black vinyl record that represented a plate with warm red and bright yellow backdrops appealed to all of the senses. What is Soul-N-Soul? Which songs will the band play? Which USA southern foods will be on the menu? The event, which took place on February 6th at the Al Ain Sands Golf Club, sold out and packed the lounge-like room with 100 guests hailing from Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. Women arrived dolled up in high heels and “date night” dresses and men were very debonair in suits, nice button ups, blazers, and most with perfectly polished dress shoes. The chef from “A Lil Taste of the South” divvied up both fried and grilled bar-be-que chicken, ribs, macaroni and cheese, green beans, rolls and had people making their way back to the serving table for his banana

pudding and pound cake. All of this was washed down with a cup of perfectly brewed sweet ice tea. As the crowd indulged in the meal “The Tower Project”, featuring Glenn Malone, buzzed through the room passively but not without notice. Guests made small talk, ate, drank, and robotically swayed from side to side. After dinner hour was over, the band members moved the tables and created a dance floor. Some jumped up immediately to dance to the covers of Maxwell, John Legend, Marvin Gaye, and The Gap Band, just to name a few. The night ended with the crowd both doing and teaching different dance hustles and steps, with people bidding farewell to new found friends, and with guest asking when they would get the opportunity to socialize, eat soul food, and dance and listen to soul music in Al Ain once again.

OL, a 30-year-old Indian woman visitor, allegedly used two credit cards of another woman after managing to get replacements of the original cards from the bank. The accused purchased jewellery and electronics worth a total of Dh136,482 using the two cards and posing as the original holder of the cards, supported by a forged driving licence. The crime was discovered when the real holder of the credit cards contacted the bank to know about her accounts. When she learnt about the balances, she was shocked as she had not used the cards for any purchase. The bank also found out that a woman, who claimed to be the holder of the cards, had blocked them claiming the cards to be lost and was issued two new ones as replacements after she answered all necessary identification questions correctly. The new cards were sent via Aramex courier to the hotel room where the accused was staying. The ‘holder’ signed on the Aramex delivery receipt and presented a driver’s licence that carried her picture and the name of the bank’s client. Investigations with the shops where the two credit cards were used revealed that the accused had used the driver’s licence as an identification document. Police arrested OL in an office of Aramex which she had come to collect a credit card that she had managed to get issued by a bank different from the one involved in the first case.

Drunk traveller gropes teen girl on plane

A drunken Sri Lankan air passenger allegedly molested a teenage girl who was travelling alone and was sleeping in her seat next to him, the Dubai Criminal Court heard. On November 5, 13-year old SK was travelling on Sri Lankan Airways to Dubai. When the crew turned off the lights of the plane, she felt sleepy, so she bent on the table and slept.

The passenger sitting next to her, AA, 45, was consuming alcohol. He groped the girl’s legs before inserting his hand into her shirt and passed it over her breasts and neck although the girl shouted at him and pushed his hand away several times. He stopped groping her after the lights were turned on. However, he resumed and he bent on her back, hugged her and groped her private parts. He also passed his finger on her lips to provoke her. “He insisted on groping me although I

pushed his hand away and shouted at him. When the lights were switched on, he tried to speak to me but I did not talk to him. When the lights were switched off, he groped me and tried to open the buttons of her dress. I got scared and did not know what to do as I was travelling alone,” the girl told investigators. The accused continued walking behind her when she got off the plane. Then the girl saw a washroom, entered it and started crying. A woman, who was in the washroom, noticed the girl and asked why she was crying. The girl told the woman what had happened on the plane and about the man who was following her in the airport. The woman accompanied the girl to a security officer to report the incident. The officer told the girl’s father who was waiting for her in the arrival hall. Police arrested the passenger and found out that

he was drunk. Drugs for personal use were confiscated from him, for which he is being prosecuted in a separate case. The court will give its sentences in both cases on March 11.

Installations throughout the Building drew on one’s senses; sight, sound, and movement, to revive and celebrate the memory of this treasured landmark and raise awareness on the importance of conserving Abu Dhabi’s modern heritage. Resuming its historic role as a platform for culture and arts, the Cultural Foundation Building was also the home to a series of performances in its open air Amphitheatre, as well as a number of arts & crafts workshops. It hosted an exhibition recreating the collective memory of this space in a contemporary cultural experience. In the Cultural Foundation Building, visitors went on a journey through the past, present and future of Emirati modern heritage. Besides its importance as an architectural landmark that combines Modern and Islamic styles, the exhibition highlights the vital role that the Cultural Foundation has played in the development of Abu Dhabi’s cultural scene.

Marriage One-liners 1.

2. 3. 4.

A man meets a genie. The genie tells him he can have whatever he wants, provided that his mother-in-law gets double. The man thinks for a moment and then says, 'OK, give me a million dollars and beat me half to death.'

How do most men define marriage? A very expensive way to get your laundry done free. A man said his credit card was stolen but he decided not to report it because the thief was spending less than his wife did. The most effective way to remember your wife's birthday is to forget it once.

But now, on a very serious note, where would we really be if it were not for those precious women who turn our houses into homes and make this all too often cruel world oh so much brighter – long live the Queen!

The Final Cookie An elderly Italian man lay dying in his bed. While suffering the agonies of impending death, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favourite Italian anisette sprinkle cookies wafting up the stairs.

Gathering his remaining strength, he lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort, gripping the railing with both hands he crawled downstairs. With laboured breath, he leaned against the doorframe, gazing into the kitchen. Where, if not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven, for there, spread out upon waxed paper on the kitchen table, were literally hundreds of his favourite anisette sprinkled cookies. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted Italian wife of sixty years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man? Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself towards the table, landing on his knees in a crumpled posture. His parched lips parted, the wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth, seemingly bringing him back to life. The aged and withered hand trembled on its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife..... 'Back off!' she hollered, 'they're for your funeral.'

How to prevent

colds and flu

Q By Dr. Nadia Hussain

uite often, discussions with friends and family revolve around the prevention of a cold or flu. Everyone has their tried and tested ways of prevention, like never leaving the house with wet hair and so on. If you want to reduce your chances of getting a cold, then think H.E.A.L:

H – Healthy habits E – Healthy environment A – Healthy alternatives L – Healthy lifestyle This is a four step approach that helps you keep those nasty colds away. Healthy habits Cold and flu viruses are everywhere and spread very easily from one surface to another. This is why a few healthy habits can reduce exposure to these germs and hopefully keep you infection free. Your hygiene habits are your first line of defense. These habits restrict the access of harmful germs to your body and help keep your immune system working efficiently.

16

The Source

Wash your hands frequently. Although anyone who practices good hygiene washes after using the bathroom and before cooking and eating, it is also important to wash your hands after coughing or sneezing to avoid spreading germs. There is no need to go overboard and be constantly using antibacterial soaps and wipes. Plain old soap and water are just as effective. Just be sure to soap up for at least 15 seconds and help your children do the same. If you don’t have access to soap and water, then alcohol rubs and hand wipes may offer some protection against certain infectious agents. Germs like to ride on your hands and their entry points to the body are the mouth, nose, and eyes. This means you should avoid rubbing your eyes, touching your nose and mouth or biting your nails.

H E A L T H Y ENVIRONMENT

Poor air circulation in closed quarters can promote illness. Staying indoors more than required and rubbing elbows with your friends and neighbors allows viruses to spread more

easily. This doesn’t mean avoid socializing, just do your best to maintain a healthy environment. Even if your home appears to be clean, viruses may be lurking on household surfaces. Cold viruses can survive for 3 hours on surfaces like telephones and light switches. One of the easiest ways to defend your home from these unwanted guests is to use a disinfectant spray that kills viruses on frequently touched items such as: doorknobs, taps, computer keyboards and remote controls.

HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES

There is no cure for the common cold due to the enormous number of cold causing viruses. However, you can take supplements to help reduce the frequency of your colds. Supplements like garlic, ginseng, and vitamin E help as long as you don’t over indulge. Healthy lifestyle Healthy lifestyle habits include, not skipping meals and eating a balanced, healthy diet. Getting enough sleep reduces stress and boosts your immune system. Exercise has been known to enhance the effectiveness of the flu vaccine. Decrease your stress levels with activities such as meditation, yoga and calm breathing. Despite everything, if you've come down with a cold and you find there's nothing more to be done, rest and have a bowl of chicken soup. It is probably what your mom told you to do in the first place.

ROUGHHOUSING DADS BATTLE TO WIN

T

WIN AT RAISING WELL BALANCED KIDS THAT IS… he next time mom tells you to settle down and stop the roughhousing and commotion, you can, with great conviction, ask her nicely to stop interrupting valuable life lessons that promise to create well balanced children and ultimately adults!

Studies have shown that play—especially active physical play, like roughhousing—makes kids smart, emotionally intelligent, lovable and likable, ethical, physically fit, and joyful. Let’s look at each benefit more carefully. 1. ROUGHHOUSING MAKES KID SMART This is fascinating: Roughhousing fertilizes our brain. For real! This kind of physical play releases a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which really is like fertilizer for our brains. Roughhousing stimulates neuron growth within the cortex and hippocampus regions of the brain, responsible for memory, learning, language, and logic. Animal behaviorists have found that the youngsters of the smarter species engage in physical play, so

it isn’t surprising that roughhousing actually boosts school performance. Who knows? If your kid wrestles every day, he might win a scholarship to Yale! 2. ROUGHHOUSING BUILDS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE.

Because rough-housing helps children develop skills in reading the emotions of others—is he going for my gut? Or is he going to grab me over the head?—as well as manage their own emotions—I am not going to hit him in the gut or grab him over the head—they are well prepared to navigate successfully through the emotional adult world: reading a boss’s mood, knowing how to challenge a co-worker, being able to hang with the family during the holidays. Moreover kids learn how to regain self-control, which makes them more confident in their emotional lives. 3. ROUGHHOUSING MAKES KIDS MORE LIKABLE. This is true for four reasons. First, physical play builds friendships and other relationships, and this is especially true for boys, who don’t gush all over each other, much less say “I like you.” Roughhousing can be a declaration of friendship or affection not only for elementary school boys, but

for young men, as well. Second, kids who roughhouse are able to distinguish between innocent play and aggression; therefore, it helps children develop social and problemsolving skills. Third, youngsters who physically play learn how to take turns. If they are playing right, each person will get a chance to chase, and to be chased. No one person should be “it” the entire time. Finally, roughhousing teaches kids the concept of leadership and negotiation. Think about the rules that go into physical games. Everyone needs to agree, which is wonderful preparation for professional success as well as committed relationships. 4. ROUGHHOUSING MAKES CHILDREN ETHICAL AND MORAL. Interestingly enough, the animals with the highest level of moral development also engage in the most play, especially physical play. One way we can measure moral behavior in animal play is by observing “selfhandicapping,” when the stronger animal holds back his strength when playing with a weaker or smaller opponent. Humans do this too, and especially fathers, when physically engaging with their children. 5. ROUGHHOUSING MAKES KIDS PHYSICALLY FIT. This one is obvious. But physical fitness isn’t just about body strength. It involves complex motor learning, concentration, coordination, body control, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility. So free play is going to offer different benefits than, say, gym class. 6. ROUGHHOUSING BRINGS JOY. As a species, humans are hardwired for roughhousing, so the body and mind are happy when we let it happen. According to studies in neuroscience, when the play circuits in the brains of mammals are activated, they feel joy. So there you have it Dad; don’t hold back, grab those little darlings and teach them a thing or two while roughing them up a bit – they’ll thank you later in life.

NRC AND ENS TAKE FIRST STEPS TO IMPLEMENT

“FAWASEL” The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) and Emirates National Schools (ENS) held their first working session to discuss the implementation of the “Fawasel” program. ENS and NRC signed an agreement under the Auspices of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, to implement the “Fawasel” program, the all-encompassing ‘how-to’ life-skills program that explores physical education, health and diet, road safety, online safety, and the importance of giving back to the community.

The working session saw a discussion on the implementation of the program that aims to further develop the skills of students in four key categories: life skills and the prevention of risky behaviour, health and safety, mental health, and social responsibility. The life skills training category will see sessions on strengthening ties between students and their families and teachers, training students on self-expression, in addition to equipping them with decision-making skills to empower them in the face of challenges such as substance use peer pressure. 20

social and community forum

The second category addresses healthy nutrition, dental hygiene, and the importance of regular exercise and traffic safety. This area will also l involve parents during the sessions on the safe use of social media. In the third part of the program, NRC will conduct a psychological evaluation of the students, introduce them to the idea of mental health and stress management, in addition to introducing them to the negative effects of smoking. Teachers will also be trained to deal with the anger and stress among students. The final part of the program will focus on providing students with opportunities to participate in a range of voluntary activities in the local community. NRC and ENS stressed that the active participation of parents is one of the most critical factors to the success of the program. H.E. Dr. Hamad Ghaferi, Director General of the National Rehabilitation Center said: "Realizing the importance of contributing to the building of our nation’s future generation, we’ve started taking active steps towards bringing this partnership with ENS to life. We are proud of this partnership with ENS, who is playing a pioneering role in

the implementation of this one-of-a-kind global program that was tailor made for the UAE. Being the most influential figures in their children’s lives, we urge parents to participate in this program as they are the guardians responsible for the upbringing of tomorrow’s leaders.” Dr. Kenneth Vedra, Director General of the Emirates National schools, commented on this occasion: “We are pleased to start the implementation of the Fawasel program in coordination with the National Rehabilitation center, as this is a great opportunity for us to work with our kids in a preventive measure on a first of its kind program, which will help us maintain focus on our families and students healthy growth.” Dr. Kenneth Vedra added that the partnership between Emirates National Schools and NRC offers a variety of activities to support the educational process in schools. NRC also works on involving Emirates National Schools’ students through providing them with opportunities to participate in a number of social awareness programs. Prior to the program’s implementation, NRC held a three-day workshop presented by Daniel Bilu, lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (SFIVET), and founder of the European version of Unplugged program.

Faculty members at the Emirates National Schools attended the workshops with the aim to train them on applying the program at schools. Prof. Daniel Bilu, said: “Applying such awareness programs is a milestone toward developing the c‎ haracter structure of students who belong to this important age group. The overall benefit of the program that students will gain is one of its constituents and reasons of success. By increasing their self-confidence and improving their life skills, the program will not only be able to raise awareness on substance abuse among students but also get them prepared to meet all challenges they may face, especially in the social media era.” Emirates National Schools (ENS) was established by MoPA and first opened its doors in 2002 in Mohammed Bin Zayed City. Its schools currently consist of three campuses, Mohammed Bin Zayed City Campus, Al Ain City Campus and Abu Dhabi City Campus. Starting the 201415 school year, ENS had 6,300 students enrolled across its three campuses, from kindergarten to grade 12. ENS offers an American-based curriculum, while its programs are based on the educational requirements prescribed by the UAE Ministry of Education for Arabic, Islamic and UAE Studies.

Al Ain’s Family Friendly Services

U

sually, when I walk into Al Ain Sand Golf Club’s Farmer’s Market, I’m mid sweat. I have my 6 month old in a baby sling in front of me and my three year old with my husband behind me, constantly reminding us of her desires to play outside, and I’m almost dragging my nearly 2 year old because I didn’t let him pick up a stick, kick a rock, sit down, stand still and so forth. I won’t even try to describe how it is once we get “settled.” Yet, even with all of this, we still go back almost every Saturday as the food vendors, fresh produce, playground, and buying products from an amazing skincare line has become one of our family’s traditions. This past week, however, I ventured to the farmers market without my children and husband. Which was quite ironic as it was themed a birth and baby expo. I was on a mission to find out what Al Ain had to offer families and I am happy to report that I arrived un-frazzled and only carrying a purse. The first table that caught my attention was the LaLeche League breastfeeding information and support table. I was excited to hear that not only are there LeLeche League representatives in Al Ain, but that they meet every third Wednesday of each month from 4pm-6pm, to render breastfeeding education, support, and encouragement.

I continued perusing and was welcomed over by a baby masseuse and child yoga instructor. Mel Craven, founder of The Blue Lotus Tree, is a certified Blossom and Berry Baby masseuse and Groovy Kids Yoga instructor. She is available to do private and group sessions for both baby massages, from ages 6 weeks to 12 months and kid’s yoga, beginning from 12 months. Set up in the center of the room was a display of breath taking artwork. Vern Brown not only sells his masterpieces, he also hosts individual art lessons for children aged 4 years and up. He currently hosts the art sessions in his flat where he teaches drawing, painting, pencils, acrylic, charcoal, and oil techniques. Lastly, I walked outside and saw some of the most precious newborn photos. Amanda Haddow, of Amanda Haddow Photography, has a studio set up for newborns, babies, and children’s photo shoots. She is also happy to take family photos, wherever families desire. Amanda boasted of her specialization in desert photography and I must say that I agree, as she had a stunning family desert photo on display. While I did end up missing my family, I was very excited about all of the different vendors of which there were many more than I am able to account for. It was also nice to leave without food, dirt, and spit up stains on my clothes. I am, however, looking forward to those stains at next week’s farmer’s market.

"BACK TO NATURE" with Babyshop’s Spring 2015 Collection I believe it’s safe to say that “spring has sprung” and if the rising thermometer is not convincing enough, then the all new 2015 Spring Collection at our favourite children’s fashion outlet, Babyshop, will leave little doubt. Photos by Sikkandar Sharpudeen Babyshop’s 44 UAE locations, including 5 in Al Ain, gives mothers the perfect chance to acquire a lighter, more comfortable wardrobe for their kids. The ‘Spring 2015’ collection for children aged 0 to 16, boasts a variety of new brands as well as old favorites that ensure a stylish new wardrobe for the season. Spring is nature’s way of saying ‘let’s party’! It’s that time of the year, when children are most keen to explore the great outdoors and be at one with nature. With this in mind, the new Spring Collection has aptly been presented under the theme ‘Back to Nature’, with a wide selection of designs that reflect the latest spring trends from around the world. To properly kick things off in Al Ain, Babyshop invited a lucky group of parents and their children for an exclusive ‘sneak peak’ at the exhaustive selection available and The Source came along to chronicle the smiles and excitement generated by the group of young fashionistas! The staff at the Al Ain Mall location ushered the group of youngsters in and out of change rooms, repeatedly emerging with new and stunning looks begging to be accessorized with their huge selection of finishing touches. For the girls, there were lace dresses, relaxed shorts, peplum tops, midi dresses and skirts, short overalls and tee-shirt dresses. The collection features a mix of casual and dressy themes, combining the ‘boho meets dressy’ look like never before. Ditzy floral prints in soft pastel colors dominate the

collection and lace features heavily. Colors are vivid and strong with brights balanced by neutrals and prints kept to a retro vibe with superior quality fabric. For the boys, high impact trends with a stronger presence of tropical floral prints are featured. Variants of camouflage in all color combinations with all over prints on shirts and tees reflect the trend. Huge on the roster this year are one-pocket tees, knit shorts, slim sweatpants and straight leg jeans. Needless to say the entire shop was ‘a buzz’ with animated young models stirring the scene, while dizzied parents watched the circus unfold. As much as parents tried to impose their outfit choices on offspring, the kids were quick to deny them and more

Cayla just can't get enough of the 'Barbie' collection often than not, made haste to the change rooms with their own cache of threads! We heard comments like, “I love the colours and fit” and “mommy, can we get everything I picked out?” But I believe, best of all was one mother exclaiming, “with affordable prices such as these on top name brands, you can be sure that I’ll be back to take advantage of this collection!” And indeed, some of the parents did not wait for a return visit, rather capitalized on the opportunity there and then. The morning was a huge success and all thanked the very hospitable Babyshop team for a party well hosted as parents departed with their generous gifts, and chocolate covered kids, who indulged in a decadent reward.

It’s Risky to Use a Dating App on Your Company Device Employees who use dating apps on their company’s smartphone or tablet could be exposing themselves to security threats such as hacking, spying and data theft, a study by IBM has found. Researchers analyzed 41 dating applications and found that 60% were potentially vulnerable to cyberattacks, putting personal or corporate data at risk, reports Reuters. IBM also highlighted problems with employees using their personal phone for work purposes, which is known as “bring your own device,” or BYOD. “The trouble with BYOD is that, if not managed properly, the organizations might be leaking sensitive corporate data via employee-owned devices,” the report said. One issue is that when people are looking for love on dating sites, they could be letting their guard down more than they would if they were using emails or on the phone, IBM says. Many of these sites have access to a phone’s microphone, camera or GPS location and so if hackers find a security flaw in the app, they could eavesdrop on potentially sensitive conversations or confidential business meetings. Sony's Xperia E4 promises two-day battery life and 5-inch screen Sony has a new low-end phone to try and tempt those of you whose bank accounts don't stretch to the expense of its flagship Xperia Z3. Called the Xperia E4, this budget device has a large 5-inch display and a battery that will apparently keep it chugging along for two whole days -- an impressive claim. Key specs for the phone include a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, a 960x540-pixel screen, 8GB of storage and a 5-megapixel camera on the back. The E4 only has 3G,

so don't plump for this if you're hoping to take advantage of super-fast 4G LTE data speeds. Sony has yet to say exactly how much the phone will cost, but those specs plop this phone squarely in the bottom end of the smartphone market.

A TALE OF INSPIRATION

DR. FAYEZ K. ABO KHAROUB ‘A Doctor and a Gentleman’ By Farid Nouisser

s the country’s largest private health care hospital group, Al Noor Hospital is on a constant mission of improving already outstanding services and this labour of love and above all healing, is once again emphasized with the recent arrival of Dr. Fayez Kassem Abo Kharoub, at the Al Ain Al Noor Hospital. Dr. Kharoub is head of the obstetrics and gynecology department, as well as an expert in laparoscopic surgery. His extensive background and experience in this field has opened the doors of opportunity for many patients, who in the past would have had to seek such specialized procedures elsewhere. Laparoscopic surgery, also referred to as minimally invasive surgery, describes the performance of surgical procedures with the assistance of a video camera and several thin instruments. During the surgical procedure, small incisions of up to half an inch are made and plastic tubes called ports are placed through these incisions. The camera and the instruments are then introduced through the ports which allow access to the inside of the patient. The camera transmits an image of the organs inside the abdomen onto a television monitor. The surgeon is not able to see directly into the patient without the traditional large incision. The video camera

al majlis becomes a surgeon’s eyes in laparoscopy surgery, since the surgeon uses the image from the video camera positioned inside the patient’s body to perform the procedure. Benefits of minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures are • • • • •

or

Less post operative discomfort since the incisions are much smaller Quicker recovery times Shorter hospital stays Earlier return to full activities Much smaller scars

Now that we have given you a better understanding of the high tech skills Dr. Kharoub has brought to Al Noor, I would like to discuss an extremely unique case and milestone surgery that was performed by the doctor a couple of months ago. Although this particular operation did not require a laparoscopic procedure, it was a most noteworthy performance and in fact, the first of this magnitude in the UAE. A 34 year old woman with an abdominal tumor visited the hospital with symptoms including: chronic back and abdominal pain, irregular and heavy menstrual cycles, and constant constipation. She had undergone two previous surgical procedures to remove the tumor, only to have it return with a vengeance. Her sister had also suffered with a similar condition and eventually died after repetitive surgery related complications. Needless to say, the poor woman was both physically and emotionally shattered, with a distended belly that no longer afforded her the luxury of sleeping flat on her back without severe breathing complications. Dr. Kharoub diagnosed the problem and

wasted no time admitting her for a surgery that would offer not only relief from perpetual suffering, but an opportunity to continue her life in a fashion consistent with a healthy young woman. After a five hour surgery, a 4 kilogram tumor was successfully removed from her abdomen and she was placed into recovery, where she remained for only 3 days before being discharged from hospital in very good condition– nothing short of a miracle! To have removed such an enormous tumor without major complications was a spectacular accomplishment in and of itself, but there is an even happier ending that brought a smile to everyone involved, especially the patient; Dr. Kharoub was able to save the uterus and a woman who could only have dreamed of the possibility of raising a family in the past, is now able to look forward to pregnancy! I was completely speechless after hearing this story and was filled with an indescribable joy for a woman I did not know but felt close to none the less. These are the many human stories that come to us from time to time, courtesy of the many unsung heroes who dedicate their careers to the preservation of life. I chatted for a while longer with the doctor about family and his new home in Al Ain. Hailing from Syria, he is the father of 7 children and is married to an anesthesiologist who shares his zeal for healing. As I returned to my office, I reminisced about the recent visit with Dr. Kharoub. His firm handshake, honest engagement and above all passion for life, filled me with enormous appreciation for the people that give selflessly for the benefit of mankind – welcome to Al Ain my friend!

Jim Carrey Questions Matt Lauer About Brian Williams on ‘SNL’ 40th Anniversary Red Carpet Jim Carrey decided to make things awkward during his interview with Matt Lauer on the red carpet for Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary show by bringing up—and defending—Brian Williams. Lauer was ending his interview with Carrey and Tina Fey, when Carrey jumped in, saying: “Can I ask you a question, you guys? Where are you hiding Brian Williams? Where is he?” Lauer, visibly uncomfortable, looked at his wrist and said, “Oh, look at the time”—but Carrey continued: “I just want to say something in his defense: If the helicopter in front of me gets hit, I’m taking the story.” Lauer put an end to the interview then, saying, “Thank you, Jim.”

It wasn’t the only time NBC’s disgraced anchor came up during the red carpet special. While talking to Carson Daly, Rudy Giuliani also mentioned Williams. The ex-New York City mayor recalled responding to a question from Lorne Michaels—”Can we be funny?”—during SNL’s first post-9/11 episode. Giuliani replied by saying, “Why start now?” “I want to make sure, Brian Williams, and all this stuff, I want to make sure you understand that was his line,” Giuliani said, referring to Michaels. “He wrote it. I read it. I was not smart enough to have that line.”

Lady Gaga is Engaged to Taylor Kinney The "Born This Way" singer, 28, posted a picture to Instagram with the caption, "He gave me his heart on Valentine's Day, and I said YES!" The ring is shaped like a heart. Just before Kinney popped the question, Gaga posted a picture of her new black bob, looking regal with the caption, "ready for my Valentine." How right she was! Gaga and the "Chicago Fire" actor, 33, have been dating since they collaborated together in 2011 for her video "You and I."

Sonam Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor to turn designers In December, Gaga told Howard Stern that she knew "Kinney is the right guy." "I have that feeling with him," she said during an interview for Stern's Sirius XM radio show. "I just know it."

"It's My Party" Singer Lesley Gore Dies The singer passed away in a hospital in New York after a battle with cancer, according to her partner, Lois Sasson, Fox News, The New York Daily News and other outlets reported on Monday. Gore is also survived by her mother and brother.

Talking about this venture Sonam says, “We wanted to work on something that is owned by us and had our personal touch on every level. Our brand is called Rheson, a combination of Rhea and Sonam, phonetically pronounced reason. It’s a high street fashion brand meant for real Indian girls.”

Gore, a New York native who grew up in New Jersey, was 16 years old and a high school junior when she released her now-popular cover of "It's My Party" in 1963. The teen angst anthem, produced by Quincy Jones, has been featured in movies such as Problem Child and Mermaids.

The high street fashion clothing won’t be high on prices too, confirms Sonam. The style will be affordable and accessible, even to small town girls who aspire to dress like the fashionista!

Lesley Gore, best known for the '60s hits "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me," has died at age 68.

Ayla Bawadi Welcomes

AHMED AL ARAJ By now I believe everyone in Al Ain is aware of the opening of Ayla’s latest prize property located adjacent to the Bawadi Mall. The Source is absolutely ecstatic about this new hospitality addition to our city and we have, in the three short months of its operation, made excellent use of the bold and inviting facilities the Ayla Bawadi offers. We took the time to catch up with Mr. Ahmed Al Araj, the general manager of the hotel, to discover firsthand about his new responsibilities as captain of the latest Ayla jewel. After almost 3 months in operation, how has the overall response been? “We have had an enormous amount of positive feedback thus far and based upon our client comment cards we are currently operating at a 95% satisfaction index, which is a huge accomplishment given the growing pains involved with any new hotel.” Where is the clientele coming from? “Our clientele is a mixture comprised of approximately 40% Al Ain residents and the other 60% arriving from neighbouring Oman, other Emirates and Gulf Coast countries. Obviously the mall plays a huge role in attracting our weekend leisure clientele but during the week, we are seeing enormous traction in establishing popularity with business travelers.” What are some of the exciting features of the new hotel that promise to be a hit with guests?

A great deal of the clubs focus will be on National women, due to its very private configuration and certain days of the week will be dedicated exclusively to their needs.” What are some of the biggest challenges associated with opening a new hotel? “For us – thank God – everything has transitioned smoothly but it is always prudent to expect issues with the physical aspect of any new construction. From a personnel perspective, it takes time to get everyone into the swing of things and our advantage here is that almost all our staff came from the existing property making the transition much easier.”

What about the biggest reward? “That’s easy; my biggest reward came on December 2nd, when we welcomed our first guest and proceeded to exceed all expectations!” Ahmed Al Araj brings with him more than 16 years of hospitality experience, having worked in every capacity of the industry and we are both happy and proud to welcome him to his new home at the Ayla Bawadi where he is poised to make a difference one guest at a time - why not head over for a taste of Ayla warmth and let Ahmed and his team make your visit a memorable experience.

“We are extremely excited about our fantastic banquet facilities that cater to both corporate meetings and private functions, such as parties and weddings. This is a very important service to offer as there is a current lack of such facilities in the heavily populated surrounding area. We look forward to hosting many such successful events in a style never before offered in this locality.” “We are also thrilled about the new health club, which once again brings a state of the art facility to an area that has a high demand but is lacking in such services. “A River Runs Through it”

A

fter three and a half years of living in Al Ain, I am astounded to still make discoveries like the one experienced last week end at OnetoOne Resort, Ain Al Faida. It’s not that I haven’t been there before but I have never really taken the time to explore the hidden treasures of the 25 square kilometer property that is sure to satisfy the leisure desires of anyone and everyone. Whether it’s a delicious meal you are after or almost any type of sporting activity, this place has it all and I am certain that for many, it remains one of Al Ain’s best kept secrets. But not for long! Having the advantage of a community magazine with which to expose these little secrets, I aim to do just that over the next few months and let the still uninformed good people of Al Ain know just what they are missing by not taking the time to explore this gem of a property! Our friends at OnetoOne have been encouraging me to come for a taste of their offerings for quite some time and last weekend I took the family for an adventure packed day that we will talk about for a while to come. It all began around 10 am Friday morning at the boat launch, as we waited to board our four seater paddle boat and embark on a lazy river adventure. Right about now you are probably saying, “what river?” we are in the middle of the desert and as far as I

know there are no rivers here, other than the dried-up wadis we are all too familiar with – wrong! I had to repeatedly pinch myself as we meandered along a wider than average river in the gleaming morning sun, passing lush green, blooming banks, with a picture perfect backdrop of Jebel Hafeet kissing a cloudless azure sky – am I in Al Ain? The entire journey took about 45 minutes and for the greater part, we let the kids peddle and chase playful ducks as mom and I basked in the morning sun, catching occasional glimpses of majestic blue herons along the banks.

We only managed to touch the tip of the ice berg when it comes to available fun at OnetoOne Resort and now that the secret is out, we will be sure to share many more adventures in the upcoming issues of The Source – stay tuned!

Next up was brunch in the Glass House restaurant, an enormous facility that can accommodate a party of 1,000 people. We filled our bellies on an extremely wide selection of scrumptious cuisine and plotted our next activity; dune bashing with quad bikes and a powerhouse 800 cc dune buggy! Once we had our fill of blasting over the dunes, we headed to the enormous pool to cool off and wash away the sand. The pool comes equipped with a one-of-akind, massive shade structure that provides shelter from the burning desert sun – an absolute must in this climate! Our itinerary for the day still included Valentine’s dinner but we were by now completely satiated, not to mention exhausted and opted for a movie night at home with the kids. The best part of the trip home was the travel time; 10 minutes and that’s a true blessing with two sleepy kids and an aching driver! The Source

JORDAN’S UNSUNG SIGHTS While the ancient city of Petra is Jordan’s most iconic attraction, there are so many more wonders to see in the Hashemite Kingdom By Pia Han Lindberg

R

ecently, a friend and I boarded a FlyDubai plane to Amman for a whirlwind Jordanian getaway. Immigration was super fast; we obtained our visas on arrival; and before we knew it, we were being whisked away by our friendly driver, Mohammed, to our hotel in the Western part of Amman. 34

The Source

The capital of Jordan was formerly known in history as Rabbath-Ammon and was once the capital city of the Ammonites, later becoming the Greco-Roman city of Philadelphia. Amman now covers at least 19 hills and is a fascinating mix of old and new. The eastern part is more traditional with narrow, busy streets and markets, while the western quarters are modern and peppered with shopping malls and hotels. Our hotel for the night was the Ibis, which offered all the amenities you’d expect, and it was from there that we set off in the morning on the three-hour-long drive to Petra, past dry, flat and rocky landscapes. Petra has been covered in this travel column

before, but it’s impossible to write about Jordan without elaborating on this vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago. The Nabataean kingdom existed for centuries and the city became admired for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels. The walk to the main entrance (where the narrow pathway down to the Treasury begins, also called the Siq) is about 1 kilometre and it is at least another kilometre through the Siq to the Treasury. All in all, the entire walk from the very beginning to where the climbing starts is at least 7km. The 800 steps (around 1,200

my world more than 6,500 years. The city’s golden age came under Roman rule and the site is one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. It was hidden in sand for centuries before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years. The old colonnaded streets, squares and plazas are surrounded by the modern Jerash, giving visitors some unique perspectives.

Hammamat Ma'in Hot Springs waterfall in Madaba had been put out here and there, along with buckets of mud, and we set about slathering mineral-rich gooey muck all over ourselves.

AMMAN Our stay ended, as it had begun, in Amman, where we continued our explorations. The Citadel, located on the city’s highest hill, is not only a historically fascinating place but also offers stunning views over Amman. Rainbow Street was our last port of call; located in the historic area of Jabal Amman, the street was originally called Abu Bakr alSiddiq Street and contains several important landmarks, including the Saudi Arabian embassy and the British Council. The street also hosts numerous small souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants, and sitting enjoying a cold drink while people-watching brought our Jordanian adventure to a very pleasant and relaxing end. The Umayyad Palace at the old roman citadel in Amman

Bobbing in the sea was truly an experience. I did not really believe that you could just lean backwards and then float around like a cork, but you could! The water was very warm and comfortable: the Dead Sea valley is below sea level and the temperature is about 10 degrees warmer than in Amman. As an added bonus, the mud worked like a charm. Nature’s loofah left my newly exfoliated skin as soft as a baby’s cheek.

footsteps) up to the top was definitely worth it to see the amazing sight of the Ad-Deir monastery. A guide is a must, otherwise you tend to miss the small details that make the experience extra special.

JORDAN RIVER After a day of bobbing and spa treatments, we were ready to hit the road again with our driver Mohammed and a guide, stopping first at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, where Jesus is said to have been baptised in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. We walked along the pathway down to the river, which was surprisingly small. Our guide explained that it decreases in size every year due to both Jordan and Israel pumping water from the river (also why the Dead Sea is shrinking by one metre a year).

THE DEAD SEA The next day, we continued on to the Dead Sea, checking in to the Warwick Winter Valley Resort. From our balcony we could see a small part of the huge salt lake and also glimpses of the villages on the Israeli side.

We then continued to the city of Madaba (the ‘city of Mosaics’) and St George’s church, famous for its huge 6th-century Byzantine map made from two million pieces of coloured stone. Our last stop was Mount Nebo, where, according to Christian tradition, Moses was buried. From the top of the mountain, you can view the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, Jericho and Jerusalem, often referred to as the Holy Land.

Down on the beach, it was surreal to see the inviting sea, while also knowing there is no normal beach life. Sun chairs and umbrellas

STORY THIEVES

By James Riley

Life is boring when you live in the real world, instead of starring in your own book series. Owen knows that better than anyone, what with the real world’s homework and chores. But everything changes the day Owen sees the impossible happen—his classmate Bethany climb out of a book in the library. It turns out Bethany’s halffictional and has been searching every book she can find for her missing father, a fictional character. Bethany can’t let anyone else learn her secret, so Owen makes her a deal: All she has to do is take him into a book in Owen’s favorite Kiel Gnomenfoot series, and he’ll never say a word. Besides, visiting the book might help Bethany find her father…

Review

of ‘The Giver’ by Lois Lowry By Zaid Deus One thing I like about ‘The Giver’ is that it allows you to think after you have read it. By that, I mean that it isn’t a huge, kind of mindless action adventure like ‘The Mazerunner’, but a very thought provoking, emotional journey. It is about a boy name Jonas who is selected because of his intelligence by the leaders of a small community to learn the memories of the world by a man known as the Giver. It is set in a future where philosophising and choice is outlawed. People cannot even see colour. Everything is secure.

This was set by the government known as the Elders and everyone obeyed. Jonas learns a lot from the Giver but will this become problematic? I recommend this book and the film too.
