pril is Child Abuse Prevention Month across the globe and the UAE, as of last year, has also joined in to make it official. Child abuse is a serious problem that attacks our social sustainability. Our children are our future and it is the responsibility of parents and the community alike, to ensure that our future is a healthy and vibrant one. There are many forms of child abuse and sadly enough, many excellent parents can unknowingly and unwillingly become offenders in spite of their good intentions. I urge you to read the feature inside the magazine as a reminder of the awareness required to keep our children out of harm’s way at all times.

The other day I was driving along one of our beautiful roads and noticed a most disturbing sight upon passing a vehicle. At first I thought I was hallucinating but just to reassure myself that this was not a dream, I slowed down to let the vehicle catch-up and sure enough, my eyes had not deceived me. There he was in broad daylight, his baby girl sitting on his lap, his mobile to his ear and all the while, cruising along the road as if this were absolutely normal behaviour – NOT! Now I am certain that this gentleman adores his daughter and would be absolutely devastated at the thought of anyone or anything harming the most precious thing in his life but for goodness sakes, this, in and of itself, is a form of child abuse that can be very easily remedied! We see this type of reckless behaviour time and time again while travelling on our already less than safe roads, and I am not sure what it will take to finally put an end to this irresponsible behaviour. But until that day arrives, I will continue to write about it and plead with the public to do their part in assuring the safety of our children while cruising along the roads of the UAE. Place them in a child safety seat in the rear of the vehicle, stay off your phone and most important of all, love them to infinity and beyond – sound advice for a bright and thriving future!

House is for sale and comes with a pond, a backyard and … a

WIFE

A house for sale has gone viral online after the woman selling it offered to throw in an unusual extra feature for free- her hand in marriage! The internet ad reads for the most part like a regular house listing, saying that the single-stored property has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a parking space and a fish pond. But it also proposes to buyers a “rare offer”… “when you buy this house, you can ask the owner to marry you,” alongside a picture of Wina Lia, a 40-year-old widow and beauty salon owner, leaning against a car in front of the house. The ad said that terms and conditions apply, and notes the offer is “for serious buyers and non-negotiable.” The house is in Sleman, on the Island of Java, and on the market for 999 million rupiah- which is about US$75,000. News of the offer quickly spread among internet users in social media-crazy Indonesia. Lia said she was “shocked at the reaction,”

as she had been overwhelmed by journalists coming to interview her, and even the police in the conservative, Muslim-majority country had been asking questions. The police “came to verify the news as they consider it as an improper advertisement. But I explained to them that it was not my idea,” she said. The mother of two explained that she had asked a friend who was a property agent to help her find a buyer and in the process a husband but she had expected him to pass on the news to a limited number of people instead of putting an ad online. “I told a friend of mine who also works as a property agent, that if there is a buyer who is a single man or a widower who wants to buy a house, and at the same time look for a wife, he can let me know as I’m also a widow,” she said. She added that there was only one potential buyer, who had visited on Wednesday, but refused to give further details.

WOMAN STABBED BOYFRIEND FOR EATING ALL HER SALSA Phyllis Jefferson’s temper may be as hot as her salsa. Police in Akron, Ohio, said Jefferson, 50, allegedly stabbed her boyfriend in the groin with a pen Sunday evening after he ate all the salsa in their house. Jefferson’s boyfriend, Ronnie D. Bucker, 61, told police that he and the accused were arguing about the salsa consumption when she allegedly stabbed him with the pen. The suspect then walked over to the TV and threatened to knock it on the floor. When Buckner grabbed the TV, Jefferson allegedly walked to the kitchen to grab a knife and used it to cut him in the stomach.

Jefferson fled the scene while Buckner called 911. Responding officers found him on the floor clutching his stomach. Buckner was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries that were believed to be non-life threatening. Jefferson was arrested a short time later, when officers pulled her over on the highway. She allegedly admitted to stabbing Buckner and said she did it “because she wanted to leave.” Jefferson was charged with felonious assault and criminal damaging and booked into the Summit County Jail.

7 WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT 1. Dial it down. Moving your thermostat down just two degrees in winter and up two degrees in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. 2. Turn it off. Artificial lighting accounts for 44 percent of electricity use in office buildings. Make it a habit to turn off the lights when you’re leaving any room for 15 minutes or more. Same goes for electronics; switch off power strips and unplug electrical devices when you’re not using them. 3. Use cold water. Using cold water can save up to 80 percent of the energy required to wash clothes. Choosing a low setting on the washing machine will also help save water. 4. Switch to e-billing. In the United

States, paper products make up the largest percentage of municipal solid waste, and hard copy bills alone generate almost 2 million tons of CO2. Save paper by signing up for e-billing. 5. Buy fresh, local food to eliminate the long distances traveled and preserve nutrients and flavor. 6. Recycle. You can recycle plastic bottles, paper, electronics and batteries, among other items. Learn how to properly dispose of or recycle these products and reduce consumer waste 7. Go solar. Powering your home with solar panels can reduce your electric bills, shrink your carbon footprint and increase your home’s value.

The Variations of life I was 11 when I first came to AJ, it was just another school day anyway. When I entered the class full of joy, to have a great time, make friends and enjoy, I soon realized it wasn’t as I thought; I saw kids staring and glaring and yelling a lot. I turned back for the door but it was too late then. Miss Susan caught my arm and pulled me in. I felt scared, nervy and alone; I stood there still just like a clone. It was then, when miss introduced me to Peter; he was kinda weird as if he was from jupiter. I crept in quickly and sat next to him and shook his hand which was tiny and slim. We became good friends during the course of the year; I knew I was there to stay as the signal was quite clear. Within the blink of an eye 3 years passed by; I was in grade 9, I felt as if I could fly. to be continued.....

From April 1st: Speed limit on Dubai-Al Ain road cut from 120kmph to 100kmph The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for Dubai has announced a change in the speed limit on a stretch of route E66 in wake of the recent spate of accidents on the highway.

Management Unit to provide traffic support during crashes, ensure rapid clearance of vehicles involved in minor traffic accidents, ease congestion and streamline traffic flow at crash sites and surrounding roads.

The Dubai-Al Ain Road will see its maximum speed limit drop from the current 120 kilometers per hour to 100kmph, effective April 1. The RTA made the announcement via its official social media account on Twitter, stating further, the change in speed limit will only affect a particular stretch of the busy highway.

Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, said in a statement: “A trial application of the Traffic Accidents Management Unit in sectors of the Shaikh Zayed Road, Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed road and the 100km-long sector of the Dubai-Al Ain road will soon begin.” Last week, a major accident was reported on E66 where a black SUV impacted with the central median on the highway and flipped over onto its side.

The authority stated: “RTA has decided to reduce the maximum speed on a sector of Dubai-Al Ain Road stretching from Emirates Road Interchange to Bu Kadrah Interchange from 120 km/h to 100 km/h starting from April 1, 2015.” The RTA continued: “The decision to lower

the speed on this sector of Dubai-Al Ain Road was driven by the need to maintain public safety and reduce accidents.” In a recent report, the Dubai-Al Ain stretch was highlighted as one of the most ‘fatal zones’ in terms of traffic accidents, recording 11 accidents where the Dubai Police Air Rescue Section had to be called in for assistance. A recent study that pegged financial losses from traffic jams at Dh3.5 billion annually in the emirate, prompted the RTA and the Dubai Police to establish a Traffic Accidents

Danat Celebrates Health Club Members’ Party

On 25th March, Danat Al Ain Resort celebrated its annual health club member’s party. The party was opened by the welcome speech of Mr. Ahmed Margoushy, General Manager of the resort. Members and long staying guests of the hotel were invited for this special occasion. They were treated to a sumptuous buffet prepared by Chef Abdul and his team, while Touchdown band and DJ Onie entertained them throughout the evening. The highlight of the event was the raffle draws. Lucky winners won prizes from the Danat Hotels and Resorts group.

Killer sentenced to death, girlfriend to life in jail A criminal court in Abu Dhabi sentenced an Arab man to death and his girl-friend to life in prison after they were convicted of murdering her ex-lover. The defendant confessed that he used a knife and a cleaver to kill the man at the request of his girl-friend, a Canadian of Arab origin. He said she incited him to commit the murder while they were having drugs and that she bought the weapon online. The court was told that the woman wanted to get rid of her ex-lover on the grounds he mistreated her and forced her to abort 10

their baby before dumping her for another woman. The defendant also said the girl told him where the victim lives. “The defendant said that he met his girl-friend at a nightclub in Abu Dhabi and that she kept inciting him to kill her ex-lover,” .

In February, a six-vehicle crash was reported on the busy stretch with an SUV flipped over on its side.

Cops take 4 kids away from dad

Dubai Police took four children from their father after learning they were mistreated and prevented from going to school by their step-mother. The police learned about the kids’ ordeal after they were told by the school that they had not turned up in class for nearly four months and that their parents did not reply to many messages sent by the school management. Their mother said she did not know about this as she was divorced and lives away from them, while the father claimed his new wife was only punishing the children for misbehaving. The police did not accept such logic after learning one daughter was tortured with a hot object on her hand. “We decided to take the children off their father and send them to a child protection centre after we found evidence they were being mistreated by their step-mother and prevented from going to school,” said Major Khalil Al Mansouri, Dubai’s Assistant Police Commander for Criminal Investigation. He told that the woman faces charges of dealing violently with the children, preventing them from going to school and failing to provide a clean and safe environment for them at home. “We later decided to return the children to their father who agreed to coordinate with the woman and child care centre in Dubai to ensure protection for them and allow them to go back to school,” he said.

THEY CAME, THEY GNAWED…

A

while back I spent month in Bombay playing bit parts in hospital soaps and low-budget Bollywood movies; an educational experience if ever there was.

At one shoot, it was widely agreed among our expat gang that I, in sandals, laurel wreath and toga as Mr J Caesar of Rome, was the best matched to his character. I’ve always worn a sheet well. And when I was selected for the plum job of smiling and bowing in close-up as a pair of princesses swept into the palace before a massed mix of barbarians, legionnaires and assorted figures of historical importance, their confidence in me appeared judicious. Oh, how I let them down. Though I beamed and bowed at the peak of my powers, the director would not be pleased. As take upon take met with grim disapproval, toil and trouble doubled and doubled. The barbarians, in their heat-soaking hair-suits, began to complain of sweat in unwelcome regions, and when one of them made a reference to the events of 476AD, tempers frayed among the legionnaires and the atmosphere turned nasty. As order evaporated, so did the director’s faith in me, and thus it was established that while I looked the part of the Lord of Rome, I could not act it. Retreating hotelwards, I paused at a cafe for a restorative chai, and indeed the hot sweet drink did much to sooth my aching ego. Eyeing the supply of malt biscuits that filled the glass-fronted counter, I determined that circumstances justified an indulgence. As I gestured to the waiter, there was movement among the cookies. A shift. A shove. Finally, a pointy pink-nosed face popped out between the packets, whiskers a-twitchin’ and schnozzle a-sniffin’. A pair of paws lifted a portion of biscuit to mouth where it was nibbled into nothing in no 12

The Source

time. Struck stunned with hand held high and mouth agape, it required an effort of politeness to retract my order without giving the game away, but I managed it, just as I managed never to drink there again. And so we encounter, belatedly, the subject of this column. According to Jan Zalasiewicz of the University of Leicester, a geologist who does a sideline in rodents, soon it won’t just be the biscuit cabinets that belong to ratty, but the world. Zalasiewicz knows a thing or two about extinction and the manner in which creatures benefit from niches created in eco-space. He notes that where goes man, so goes ratty. When Polynesians sailed into the Pacific, ratty manned the bilges. He devoured the nuts of the Easter Island palms so voraciously that the trees could not regenerate, thus dooming the wood-dependent society to civil war and annihilation. When Columbus mistook his Bahamanian San Salvador for Japan, ratty

JJ Dubblejay

understood better than the cap’n ever did that the world before him was a new one ripe for conquest. As Europeans wandered westwards into the Pacific, Euro-ratty met Polynesian-ratty and obliterated what birds and reptiles the old-timers had missed. In other words, wherever ratty goes, he creates his own eco-space, which he soon comes to dominate. Zalasiewicz believes that among future variants there will be one, large and essentially hairless, “living in caves, shaping rocks as primitive tools and wearing the skins of other mammals that they have killed and eaten.” Uh-oh. Might my encounter with ratty among the biscuits of Bombay be but a skirmish in an epic battle for evolutionary supremacy? Allied throughout history though we might have been, at the moment of extinction we may find, as did Caesar, the protege holding the knife.

f you’ve glanced at the last couple of issues of The Source, you may have noticed a “Jazz it up at Hilton” event, thanks to the Abu Dhabi Hilton. Organizing this blissful getaway was an absolute pleasure and since our hosts remain the most recognized name in the hospitality industry, it wasn’t difficult to find a group of Al Ainians ready to make the easy trek to our sister city, Abu Dhabi, for a weekend of food, fun, relaxation, good friends and the climax of the event, groovin-out at The Jazz Bar! On March 27th, a group of Garden City enthusiasts checked in at the Abu Dhabi Hilton, Set on the vibrant Corniche, Abu Dhabi’s prime beach location, and began what they had set out for in the heart of the UAE’s capital – a good old fashioned Hilton pampering. It began at the Hiltonia Beach Club, a 14

special feature feast as I write this article has me salivating all over my keyboard! In fact, everyone at our table agreed that it may well have been the best dining experience they have ever had in the UAE. Bonny, our waiter, led the service charge with an expertise seldom experienced – could things get any better? And then the music began! An outstanding 7 piece show band, WAVE, from the USA flooded the room with an endless variety of tunes resulting in a mass infection of uncontrollable gyrations throughout the club – simply AWESOME! It felt like I was back in Toronto, Canada at one of my favourite night spots; if you are familiar with the exceptional quality of the Toronto music scene, you will appreciate the magnitude of this comparison.

There was something for everyone and while the kids relentlessly barreled down water slides, parents roasted on the beach knowing that exhausted children translated into a peaceful evening of popcorn and movies with the babysitter, while the adults enjoyed a little unfettered nightlife.

The Abu Dhabi Hilton, like our own here in Al Ain is an established hotel dating back to the early 70’s and exploding with history. It boasts a wide variety of award winning restaurants, lounges and bars that meet and go beyond the expectations of each and every guest. Our group experience at the Jazz Bar that evening was undeniably one of the best evenings I have spent in the UAE and for those that did not embark on the road to Hilton this time around, you would be well advised to take advantage of this spectacular offer the next time we are fortunate enough to stage a repeat.

Needless to say, “Jazz it up at Hilton” was a smash hit and the only tragic moment was checking-out of our beautiful weekend retreat. I would like to extend a special thank you to Wolfgang Meier, the GM, for spearheading the event and sowing the initial seeds of inspiration that fostered a truly magical and memorable occasion. A special thank you is also extended to Tanja Bulatovic and the entire Hilton staff for their efforts in providing the impeccable service synonymous with a world leader in hospitality; thank you all and we hope to do this again in the future!

UAEU IT Students Develop Popular Android Security App Two College of Information Technology (CIT) graduates from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), Mohammed Al Matrooshi and Saeed Al Bairaq, released a mobile cyber-security application called ‘Packet Generator’ on Google Play as part of their senior graduation project. This project was supervised by Dr. Zouheir Trabelsi. Their application can be used to test the efficiency of firewalls, and intrusion detection systems. This application has a useful educational value as it allows users to generate different kinds of network traffic and learn about denial of service threats. According to the Google Play Store the application has been downloaded more than 8,000 times in about one year and has generated a user rating of 3.75. The students’ idea came from recognizing the demand for efficient and easy-to-use mobile security tools that test the resilience of network and security devices against common network attacks. There is also a demand for educational apps that can be used with mobile devices. Over the last decade the use of mobile devices

Free WhatsApp voice calls activated for all UAE users

for both personal and business purposes has increased exponentially with the arrival of smart devices (Google-Android-based smartphones and tablets) and a boom in mobile applications (apps). Mobile devices have become powerful general-purpose computing platforms. In the academic environment more and more students are using mobile devices for academic and research activities. As mobile devices grow in popularity with students, novel educational activities and tools, as well as learning approaches, can be developed to make use of mobile devices. This app is designed for networking and

Apple and Samsung’s flagship phones, the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6, are sure to dominate the smartphone world this year. Both phones are remarkably similar, in design, features and cost, but there are some telltale differences.

What the Galaxy S6 has that the iPhone 6 doesn’t

The Facebook-owned mobile messaging company had initially announced plans for the introduction of voice-calls back in February 2014, but then the lead went cold until almost a year. The past couple of months, however, have been full of action with the feature starting to show up intermittently on random Android users’ apps across the world, including some in the UAE. It seemed those on Android platform and with the latest version of the app were in line for the functionality as it turned ‘contagious.’ 16 The Source

Professor Mohamed Albaili, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, commended the students on their achievement and stressed that UAEU encourages innovation and imaginative thinking. Dr. Trabelsi and his students are planning to develop an extended version of the app to include other types of network attacks not covered by the current version.

iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6: Here’s the difference

If you’re looking to switch phones this year and have your sites on either the iPhone or Galaxy S6, we’ve built a handy guide of what each phone has that the other doesn’t, and what both have in common.

After weeks of now-on-now-off free WhatsApp voice calls, the mobile messaging app is finally offering free VoIP calls to all UAE Android users (and those in the rest of the world).

security professionals to test the resilience of their network and security devices against malicious attacks. In addition, the app can be used by educators to teach students how to perform ethical hacking attacks and generate specific network traffic.

Wireless charging and quick charging Like many other top Android phones, the Galaxy S6 supports wireless charging with a separate wireless charger, which you can find in many stores today. You simply place the phone on a wireless charging pad to add juice without fumbling with wires. Additionally, the S6 promises to charge quickly, so you’re not waiting around for enough battery to go about your day. Built-in heart-rate monitor The S6’s LED flash doubles as a heart-rate monitor that can also measure your blood oxygen saturation. You can use it to test your resting heart rate, or while exercising to see how hard you’re pushing. Our real-world tests show that these kinds of heart-rate monitors aren’t the most accurate, but it’s

nice to have the option. The iPhone 6 can measure your heart rate through the LED flash, but you’ll need a third-party app to do it. Bigger, higher resolution screen The Galaxy S6 benefits from a large, supersharp screen that looks impressive in person and has a higher resolution than the iPhone 6. Samsung’s latest has a 5.1inch AMOLED 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution (577 ppi) screen. In contrast, the iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch 1,344x750 IPS (326 ppi) display. If you want a five-plus-inch screen, you’ll need to look at the iPhone 6 Plus, which costs an average $100 more than the iPhone 6. A dedicated VR accessory Looking at future tech, Samsung’s got a leg up over Apple with both smartwatches and virtual reality. The Samsung Gear VR headset pairs with the Galaxy S6 to create an immersive video-watching and gameplaying experience. VR might still be a bit ahead of its time, but if you’re into it, you’ll be able to use it with the S6.

The Manly History of Meditation

M

editation has a long and storied manly history, and it has been utilized by men from many different walks of life for thousands of years. It has, of course, famously been a tool used by adherents of many religions, from Buddhist monks to Jesuit priests. But philosophers of all stripes have always seen its value as well; the Stoics used meditation as a tool to develop their fortitude and selfcontrol, for example. And warrior classes across cultures used meditation to instill in their soldiers a keen mind and a fearless heart. The ancient Samurai are perhaps the most famous warrior/meditator class. They meditated upon death daily so that they could fight without fear. Many of history’s greatest thinkers also happened to be meditators. For example, Charles Darwin and Immanuel Kant unknowingly practiced what is called “active mediation.” They would take a daily walk where they would ponder some idea they’d been working on. Oftentimes it was during these walks that they had their biggest insights.

WHY MEDITATE? Everybody meditates for different reasons. It is a practice often undertaken by those seeking to develop

18

The Source

their spirituality or trying to work through emotional problems. But even if those reasons don’t call to you personally, you can still benefit from meditation for several reasons. First, meditation serves as a defense between our fast-paced, technological world and our psyches. We’re surrounded by a multitude of distractions from smart phones to 24-hour news channels. The onslaught of input we receive each day can do a number on us emotionally and psychologically. Meditation allows a man to take a much needed mental rest from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It restores our brain’s balance and our sense of overall calm and well-being.

Second, and related to the point above, is that meditation can help increase your attention span and focus. You exercise your body at the gym, but what do you do for your brain? If you find it difficult to concentrate on your work, your studies, or even your interactions with other people, you need to meditate. It’s a workout for your brain and can give you the strength to focus better and longer on your daily tasks. Third, meditation can help a man “be his own man” and feel comfortable in his own skin. That constant stream of input we face each day often carries messages of what we’re supposed to think or feel. Talking heads spout off opinions as if they were facts. Advertisers try to convince us that buying such-and-such product will make us feel more virile and manly. Meditation allows us to be alone with our own thoughts and discover what we really think about the world and ourselves. Meditation is mental training that enables you to control your own thoughts, instead of letting others control them. It creates a deep inner discipline, which is incredibly manly. If those aren’t enough reasons for you to start meditating, scientists are learning that meditation can actually change your brain and body in very positive ways, such as lowering your blood pressure, strengthening your empathy, and boosting your memory. Bottom line: Meditation can make you a healthier, smarter man!

Makeover Competition

Winner!

F

irst off, we would like to thank all of the women who entered this competition, La Poupee Beauty Center for their above and beyond service and most important of all, congratulate our winner, Cathy Garcia. Cathy lives in Al Ain and works as a security receptionist. She was ecstatic about having been chosen and described her experience at La Poupee as a first and once in a lifetime pampering. It is always heartwarming to be able to facilitate unforgettable memories and create a bit of magic in the lives of deserving individuals and that is exactly what took place during her 5 hour visit to the salon. We delivered Cathy to La Poupee at 10 am on Sunday, March 29th and the skilled staff immediately whisked her away to begin the day’s succession of treatments. Cathy received a California wash, cut, and style, complete with magnificently set curls, thanks to the very talented stylist, Delia. Next on the agenda was an immaculate natural manicure/pedicure that included colour and nail art courtesy of Iris, one of the spas nail technicians. Amani was also on board to cap things off with an elaborate application of make-up rendering our Queen ready to attend any ball! Cathy is a 43 year old mother of 4 and admitted that life has certainly had its ups and downs, but today was definitely a day of blessings. In her gracious and humble manner she thanked everyone involved for making her feel beyond special and as I drove her home from the salon, she shared this bit of wisdom with me: “Each day I do my best to remember to thank God for all of my blessings, successes and indeed, even the failures, all of which combined have made me a stronger more understanding individual. I want to remind people to reach out and show their love for one another at every possible opportunity because life can change in a split second and no matter what adversities it may bring, nothing completes a human being more than love – don’t wait until it’s too late!” A powerful message from a very brave and strong woman and we wish her all the best as she continues her journey through life.

had elaborate dreams of travelling extensively when we moved to this country. My husband and I would seize every opportunity to visit different countries, interact with new cultures, taste yummy cuisines, and learn new things. We initially planned to be here for two years, so I was determined to make each holiday count. I spoke with self-proclaimed travel gurus, read books about specific countries, and drove my husband insane, but I had a plan in place for every spring break and all other breaks in between. Five years and three children later I have only crossed three places off of that list and this spring break will end without an additional conquest. While I dread the idea of spending our breaks in the UAE, I have resolved to the fact that my initial dreams of

1. It’s expensive. Travelling seems exciting and doable until I multiply everything by 5 (or 4.5 as my youngest is only 8 months). I often compare ticket prices to America to justify purchases here. “If we were flying to Spain from America it would be double this price!” However, the truth is, at this particular time, I wouldn’t fly to Spain from America, not even for half the price. 2. Timing is everything. I actually attempted to sneak in a holiday this spring break since our second child isn’t yet two and would fly for free. My husband was the voice of reason as usual. He rejected my last minute plea by explaining that taking a trip now would be wasted on our youngest two children, as they aren’t capable of having an authentic experience yet. Besides that, I’m

sure vacations will be much more enjoyable minus strollers, car seats, breastfeeding, and diapers.

3. Find destinations close to home. No, I’m not going to Rome or Thailand this spring break, but I am planning a trip to Fujairah with friends, finalizing a menu for a barbeque for my son’s birthday, and am about to book an overnight stay in Dubai. No, it’s not Thailand but it is a holiday and I’ll take it. 4. Travel when you can! When we plan a holiday that works within our time and financial boundaries, be it a romantic get-a-way for my husband and I or family vacation, I will not feel guilty about our getting on a plane and meeting that break wherever it may be. In the meantime, safe travels to all of you that are traveling, and I will try my hardest to keep the green-eyed monster at bay.

laucoma is a condition in which the optic nerve in the eye is damaged and can get worse with time. It usually occurs because there is extra fluid in the eye that increases pressure. This pressure is called intraocular pressure and can damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve sends images to the brain where they are processed. If damage to the optic nerve from increased eye pressure continues, glaucoma will cause permanent vision loss. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause permanent blindness within a few years. Since most people who have glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain from this increased pressure, it is important to see your eye doctor regularly so that glaucoma can be diagnosed and treated.

usually occurs in both eyes, but it may involve each eye to a different extent. Glaucoma Vision If you are over age 40 and have a family history of glaucoma, you should have a complete eye exam with an eye doctor every one to two years. Health problems such as diabetes can increase the risk for glaucoma and other eye diseases which means more frequent checkups. Glaucoma usually occurs when pressure in your eye increases. This can happen when eye fluid isn’t circulating normally in the front part of the eye. Normally, this fluid, called aqueous humor, flows out of the eye through a mesh-like channel. If this channel becomes blocked, fluid builds up, causing glaucoma. The direct cause of this blockage is unknown, but doctors do know that it can be hereditary. Less common causes of glaucoma include a blunt or chemical injury to the eye, a severe eye infection, blockage of blood vessels in the eye, inflammatory conditions, and occasionally eye surgery that was done to correct another condition. Glaucoma

Adults over forty years of age are at the greatest risk of developing glaucoma; however, it has been known to occur in younger individuals. People with a family history of glaucoma, are over the age of forty, have poor vision or diabetes, or are on certain medications such as steroids are at an increased risk of developing glaucoma. Glaucoma can also occur in young adults, children, and even infants. For most people, there are usually few or no symptoms of glaucoma. The first sign of glaucoma is often the loss of peripheral or side vision, which can go unnoticed until late in the disease. This is why glaucoma is often called the “sneak thief of vision.” Detecting glaucoma early is one reason you should have a complete exam with an eye specialist every one to two years. Occasionally, intraocular pressure can rise to severe levels. In these cases, sudden eye pain, headache, blurred vision, or the appearance of halos around lights may occur. Glaucoma cannot be prevented, but if diagnosed and treated early, the disease can be controlled.

A

pril is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, but one month alone is not enough; we need vigilance throughout the year creating a loud message that reverberates until the end of time. Ideally, our purpose as parents is to protect the most important people in the world to us from any and every source of harm. Children are the hopes and aspirations of society and their ability to grow and thrive is our responsibility. Part of that responsibility is self education as well as open discussion with our children and the community on the dangers, risks and most important of all, prevention of child abuse. With an exhaustive list of heartrending cases – keep in mind only a small percentage is reported – it makes one wonder how safe our children are out there. Although becoming an overprotective parent is not the solution, it is essential to recognize the risks and familiarize ourselves with the signs of abuse. While it is most definitely true that child abuse occurs outside the home, in most cases the child is victimized by a family member or person trusted within the family unit. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS It is not always easy to recognize when a child has been abused. Children who have been mistreated are often afraid to tell anyone, because they think they will be blamed or that no one will believe them. Sometimes they remain quiet because the person who abused them is someone they love very much, or because of fear, or both. Parents also tend to overlook signs and symptoms of abuse, because they don’t want to face the truth. This is a serious mistake! An abused child needs special support and treatment as early as possible. The longer the abuse continues and the abused is left to deal with the situation alone, the less likely a full recovery becomes. Parents should always be alert to any unexplainable changes in the child’s body or behavior. While injuries are often specific for an incident of physical abuse, behavioral change tends to reflect the anxiety that results from a stressful situation of any type. There are no behaviors that pinpoint a particular type of child abuse. PREVENTING ABUSE The major reasons for physical and psychological mistreatment of children within the family often are parental feelings

social & community forum of isolation, stress, and frustration. Parents need support and as much information as possible in order to raise their children responsibly. They need to be taught how to cope with their own feelings of frustration and anger without venting them on children. They also need the companionship of other adults who will listen and help during times of crisis. Support groups through local community organizations often are helpful first steps to diminish some of the isolation or frustration parents may be feeling. Parents who were themselves victims of abuse as children are in particular need of support. Confronting, addressing, and healing old wounds require uncommon courage and insight, but doing so is often the best assurance that the cycle of abuse is not passed on to the next generation. Personal supervision of and involvement in your child’s activities are the best ways to prevent physical and sexual abuse outside the home. Any school or child care program you select for your child should allow unrestricted and unannounced parental visits without prearrangement. Parents should be allowed to help in the classroom on a volunteer basis and be informed about the selection or changes of staff members. Parents should pay careful attention to their children’s reports about and reactions to experiences at school. Always investigate if your children tell you about mistreatment or develop sudden unexplained changes in behavior. Although you don’t want to frighten your children, you can teach them some basic rules of safety in a nonthreatening manner. Teach them to keep their distance from strangers, not to wander away from you in unfamiliar territory, to say “no” when someone asks them to do something against their will, and to always tell you if someone hurts them or makes them feel bad. Always remember that open, two-way communication with your child provides the best chance of recognizing a problem. Emphasize that they will not get in trouble for telling you about abuse or other confusing events. Emphasize that you need to know this to be able to keep them safe and that they will be OK if they tell you. Instead of teaching them that they are surrounded by danger, teach them that they are strong, capable, and can count on you to keep them safe, as long as they tell you about it. Teach them that it is not OK for adults to touch their bodies in particular places and ways. If you are a responsible parent, please take the time to reflect this month and educate yourself forever on how to prevent a social disease threatening our most precious resources!

Child Sexual Abuse

Myths and Facts

MYTH: CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IS A RARE EXPERIENCE. FACT: Child sexual abuse is not rare. Retrospective research indicates that as many as 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys will experience some form of sexual abuse before the age of 18. However, because child sexual abuse is by its very nature secretive, many of these cases are never reported. MYTH: A CHILD IS MOST LIKELY TO BE SEXUALLY ABUSED BY A STRANGER. FACT: Children are most often sexually abused by someone they know and trust. Approximately three quarters of reported cases of child sexual abuse are committed by family members or other individuals who are considered part of the victim’s “circle of trust.” MYTH: PRESCHOOLERS DO NOT NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND WOULD BE FRIGHTENED IF EDUCATED ABOUT IT. FACT: Numerous educational programs are available to teach young children about body safety skills and the difference between “okay” and “not okay” touches. These programs can help children develop basic safety skills in a way that is helpful rather than frightening. For more information on educating young children, see Let’s talk about taking care of you: An educational book about body safety for young children, available at www.hope4families. com/Lets_Talk_Book_Information.html. MYTH: CHILDREN WHO ARE SEXUALLY ABUSED WILL NEVER RECOVER. FACT: Many children are quite resilient, and with a combination of effective counseling and support from their parents or caregivers, children can and do recover from such experiences. MYTH: CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IS ALWAYS PERPETRATED BY ADULTS. FACT: Twenty-three percent of reported cases of child sexual abuse are perpetrated by individuals under the age of 18. While some degree of sexual curiosity and exploration is to be expected between children of about the same age, when one child coerces another to engage in adult - like sexual activities, the behavior is unhealthy and abusive. Both the abuser and the victim can benefit from counseling. MYTH: TALKING ABOUT SEXUAL ABUSE WITH A CHILD WHO HAS SUFFERED SUCH AN EXPERIENCE WILL ONLY MAKE IT WORSE. FACT: Although children often choose not to talk about their abuse, there is no evidence that encouraging children to talk about sexual abuse will make them feel worse. On the contrary, treatment from a mental health professional can minimize the physical, emotional, and social problems of these children by allowing them to process their feelings and fears related to the abuse. Angelina Jolie’s message to kids at Nickelodeon show: ‘Different is good’ Angelina Jolie took the stage last week at Nickelodeon’s 28th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards and delivered a message of hope to anyone who’s ever felt out of place. In her first public appearance since revealing that she underwent a second preventative surgery to lower her risk of cancer, Jolie attended the show with her children, Shiloh and Zahara. She hugged them before she went to the stage to accept the favorite villain award for her role as Maleficent in the live-action reimagining of “Sleeping Beauty.” “When I was little, like Maleficent, I was told that I was different. And I felt out of place — too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in,” the 39-yearold actor and humanitarian said. “And, then one day I realized something, something that I hope you all realize:

Johnny Depp’s Hand Injury Prolongs Delays on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Different is good,” she said, prompting enthusiastic screams from the young crowd. “And, as your villain, I would also say cause a little trouble — it’s good for you.” Jolie’s career has been full of unconventional twists and turns, from her breakthrough role as a drug-addicted model in “Gia” to her current role as an actor, filmmaker and special envoy of the U.N.’s High Commissioner for Refugees.

It’ll be a bit longer before Captain Jack Sparrow sails the high seas. Production on Walt Disney Pictures’ Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is expected resume around Apr. 15 on Australia’s Gold Coast, according to Australian media reports. Filming shut down for several weeks after Johnny Depp flew to the U.S. March 11 in order to receive hand surgery. The delay was originally expected to last two weeks, as producers believed that the 51-year-old actor’s hand injury would have a “minimal impact” on the shoot. However, that break has now extended to at least four weeks after Depp needed a pin inserted in a finger.

Taylor Swift Spotted Out With Calvin Harris, So Now They’re Rumored To Be Dating

Zayn Malik’s First Solo Song, ‘I Won’t Mind,’ Hits The Internet

Less than a week after leaving One Direction, Zayn Malik has made moves to get his solo career off the ground. Over the weekend, he was spotted heading into the studio with UK producer Naughty Boy, who uploaded a demo called “I Won’t Mind” on Monday night. It’s an acoustic folk song with lyrics like, “We are who we are when no one’s watching/ And right from the start, you know I got you,” and even in demo form it’s a total departure from One Direction’s heavily produced pop tracks. 30 The Source

Taylor Swift has been very clear about how she’s not dating anyone right now. She’s said it over and over again, and while it’s somehow doubtful she’ll come running to the media the moment she actually is in a relationship, it’s also pretty weird that she’s rumored to be dating every guy she’s spotted standing next to. So here’s the thing: Just because T-Swift and DJ Calvin Harris were spotted in Nashville on Wednesday, doesn’t necessarily mean they are dating. Two people -- even famous people -- can spend time together and not be romantically linked. Still, rumors the two are dating have been buzzing for the last few weeks, ever since the were allegedly spotted “flirting” at the Brit Awards. And according to Hello! magazine, not long after, Swift was later seen in the DJ booth with Harris at one of his Las Vegas shows, along with her friends Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez and members of the band Haim.

Recently, Deepika Padukone and Homi Adajania unveiled a video titled ‘My Choice’ which was aimed at women empowerment. The two and half minute video featured women from different walks of life talking about their choices and why they have their own choices in this otherwise patriarchal society. While Deepika Padukone stands out as the face of the video, there were other women with the likes of Anupama Chopra, Nimrat Kaur and Anaita Shroff Adajania to name a few. The video had the social media platforms divided into two halvesone which supported Deepika-Homi’s attempt at empowering the women and the other which sparked a protest against the impractical claims made in the video. Talking about the criticism, Homi Adajania said “They don’t understand the context or they are Internet trolls hankering for attention, or maybe they have a different viewpoint...it’s a democracy and this is our view and they are entitled to theirs”.

Who is The Easter Bunny?

I

t is thought that the word Easter comes from a pagan figure called Eastre (or Eostre), who was celebrated as the goddess of spring by the Saxons of Northern Europe. A festival called Eastre was held during the spring equinox by these people to honor her. Of interest is the word’s relation to east (ost in German).

The goddess Eastre’s earthly symbol was the rabbit, which along with the egg was also known as a symbol of fertility. Since rabbits and hares give birth to large litters in the early spring, it’s understandable that the rabbit is the symbol of fertility.

Modern interpretations of the Easter Bunny vary by region. In America, the story of Peter Cottontail hopping down the bunny trail has given a name and personality to the iconic figure. Germany’s version of the Easter Bunny was influenced by folklorist Jakob Grimm’s stories on traditional Easter rituals. In Australia, an abundance of rabbits became a nuisance. The endangered bilby, however, looks similar to a bunny, and has become a new symbol of the season. You can find Easter Bilby candy, cards, and decorations if you visit Australia during their Easter celebration.

bunny who brings candy and eggs, so no one questions how this legend came to be. When you actually think about it, though, it’s an odd tradition. Rabbits don’t, after all, lay eggs, or deliver gifts. The Easter Bunny is nonetheless a cherished aspect of the holiday for children all around the world.

Many grew up associating Easter with a

The legend of the Easter Bunny bringing eggs appears to have been brought to the United States by settlers from southwestern Germany. The German tradition of the Easter Bunny or “Oster Haws” migrated to America in the 1800s, likely accompanying German immigrants, many of whom settled in Pennsylvania. Over the past 200 years, the Easter Bunny has become the most commercially recognized symbol of Easter. In legend, the Easter Bunny, also called the Easter Hare and the Spring Bunny, brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy, and sometimes toys to the homes of children on the night before Easter, in much the same way as Santa Claus is said to deliver presents on Christmas Eve. The Easter Bunny will either put the baskets in a designated place or hide them somewhere in the house or garden for the children to find when they wake up in the morning, giving rise to the tradition of the Easter egg hunt. The decoration of eggs is believed to date back to at least the 13th century, while the rite of the Easter parade has even older roots. Other traditions, such as the consumption of Easter candy, are among the modern additions to the celebration of this early springtime holiday. The Source

DOHA IN A DAY The Qatari capital is a dazzling city in the making, filled with gleaming buildings, modern attractions and lush parks

A

s I looked around at my fellow conferencegoers, donned in personalised, fluffy white dressing gowns – gifted to us by the Four Seasons hotel – the beaming smiles made it hard to believe that we’d only just met, a few hours previously. Excitement was rippling around the room, from the grand piano to the walk-in wardrobe, and it was only a matter of time before everyone jumped on the huge double bed for a group photo. It wasn’t just any old room, you see, and it certainly wasn’t any old bed. We were a group of ladies being shown around one

of the Four Seasons’ regally furnished, luxurious states suites, and it just happened to be the one that British footballer David Beckham had recently stayed in, when he visited Doha for the tennis. Quite frankly, I could have moved into the suite there and then; it was huge, the size of a villa, and the impressive views made it feel like a swanky New York penthouse apartment. I’ve stayed in many faceless hotels on business trips in my life, but the BloggingME workshop I attended at the Four Seasons was in a different league altogether. They’d thought of everything, from the amazing canapés to the sundown reception on the terrace, complete with champagne and chefs at live cooking stations. Doha, I discovered, knows how to conduct business, be it in a local coffeehouse or a five-star hotel.

BUILDING BOOM There can’t be many places in the world that are changing as radically as Qatar. What began as a small fishing village is now the capital of one of the fastest-growing countries on the planet. With the eyes of the world on Qatar as it gears up to host the 2022 Fifa football World Cup, Doha is investing more than $200bn into the development of the country’s infrastructure. This massive spend will also lay the foundations for the highly diversified, knowledge-based economy outlined in the government’s National Vision 2030. Doha is building a metro, stadiums are being constructed and renovated, and there are cranes and heavy equipment all over the city. Everywhere I went, there was an intangible sense of prosperity and optimism, fuelled by the building boom and investment in education, culture and sport. The number of shopping and accommodation options continues to grow with the opening of shiny new malls and opulent resorts. But there’s also plenty of culture: visitors to Doha will

my world find history and modernity, often on the same city block, along with a generous smattering of authentic souqs and wideopen green spaces. I was struck by the uniqueness of Doha’s buildings, and still have one particular view etched on my mind. While promenading the corniche. you can see Doha’s sparkling skyline, rising up behind the old wooden dhows bobbing on the cobalt-blue bay. The corniche is without a doubt the highlight of the capital, together with the city’s geometric Museum of Islamic Art, which sits on the water’s edge like a gigantic broken Rubik Cube. Inside the free museum, there’s a fine collection of Islamic metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, textiles and glass, spanning a period of 1,400 years and mostly from Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq. The building, with its symmetry and lineal architecture, is just as impressive, with stunning views over the water and downtown Doha across the bay. A popular photo is taken from the terrace on the left side of the building, where you’ll find water fountains and three arched open windows, which frame the city centre buildings beautifully. It’s then just a short walk to Souq Waqif, the social heart of Doha and a great place to explore, shop, have dinner or peoplewatch from one of the cafes. Tourists and locals mingle here, and the alleyways and architecture are wonderfully atmospheric. I found myself surrounded by colourful birds and rabbits (in dresses!), then angled myself in a different direction and soaked up the aromas coming from the numerous shops selling spices, perfumes and oud (an exotic incense made from agarwood). Given a day in Doha, you can also fit in the cultural village of Katara, which spreads over one million square metres and contains a massive amphitheatre, opera house, cinema, beach, handicrafts souq and book stall, as well as restaurants and cafés. By

way of contrast, I also made a quick stop at The Pearl, otherwise known as Doha’s ‘Riviera Arabia’ and the glamorous address for some 12,000 residents as of January 2015. Once fully completed, The Pearl will create over 32 kilometres of new coastline. Love or hate it, it’s a distinctive sight. While idly googling some research for this article, I came across a newspaper article picturing the remarkable-looking design of a deluxe floating hotel, the plans for which were revealed at the end of 2014. Slated to be built a mile off the coast and connected to the capital by a four-lane causeway, the Silver Pearl Hotel features two half moon towers, which will light up like a pearl on the ocean at night. When it comes to Qatar’s ambitions to put the tiny peninsular state firmly on the map, the sky really is the limit.
