pril 22nd marks the 45th anniversary of Earth Day; a day set aside each year to raise awareness for the multiple environmental issues plaguing our planet. Seriously! I don’t want to seem overly pessimistic, but one day will hardly suffice when we are considering decades of economical, greed fueled growth that have led to the systematic and shameless degradation of the only home we have – the earth!
Ahhh, the human race; an unbelievably intelligent and resourceful species, known to be the sole creature with the ability to reason, yet we are sooooooo unreasonable. We are depleting, for the sake of money, the elements that are essential for our very existence, with a complete disregard for the inevitable consequences that threaten not only our survival, but the survival of so much of nature’s innocence. Sadly enough, we are aware of the self indulgent destruction and most important of all, have the technology and necessary means to fix the problem. But who will pay for the repairs? As I grow older, it becomes more and more apparent that, like so many generations before ours, we will simply pass the buck to our children, in hopes that they will be the generation to implement change and insure the sustainability of our resources and the ultimate survival of our planet. Last night, as I researched the reality of devastation we have willfully inflicted on our world, a great wave of shame washed over me, realizing that I too am a part of the problem. Before retiring for the evening, I went in to my boys’ room and gently kissed them as they lay sleeping peacefully. With a prayer in my heart for the future mankind has given them and the strength required to secure a future for their children, I thought of this: Our future will either become sustainable or there will be no future at all! We simply must become a part of the solution, not only for the sake of our children, but for the many generations to come!

Doorman is fired… for being
‘TOO NICE’ to tenants
A doorman of a fancy apartment block was fired recently for being ‘too nice’ to the tenants. Ralph Body claims he was dismissed from his job at the luxury Long Island City apartment building in New York City after offering to do nearly any task for the people who lived there. The 41-year-old was employed to simply hold the door to allow residents in and out of the building, however the worker said he checked on pets, watered plants and even showed potential tenants around if he was asked to. However on Sunday he got a call from ‘upper management’. According to Body: ‘They said: “We

know you did it for the right reasons, but unfortunately . . . you’re too nice to the tenants.”‘ Body pleaded with them, telling the managers he just wanted to make the tenants happy, but it fell on deaf ears. He was reportedly told: ‘You do things for them which you shouldn’t be doing. And unfortunately, in this case, nice guys finish last.’ Now the building’s tenants are rallying behind Body and hope to have him reinstated. A petition started by the building’s residents reads: ‘Going above and beyond your work duties shouldn’t be punished — it should be praised. We stand with Ralph.’
17-YEAR OLD REJECTS REJECTION LETTER Siobhan O’Dell does not take no for an answer. The 17 year-old from North Carolina has become a viral sensation for her bold response to a rejection letter from Duke University. “Thank you for your rejection letter of March 26, 2015,” O’Dell writes in a letter addressed to Duke University Admissions. “After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me admission into the Fall 2015 freshman class at Duke.” O’Dell posted the letter on her Tumblr page three days ago and it has been trending on social media websites ever since. It’s a move that seemed to resonate with college applicants around the country as they await acceptance or rejection letters. “This year I have been fortunate enough to receive rejection letters from the best and brightest universities in the country,” O’Dell says in the letter. “With a pool of letters so diverse and accomplished I was unable to
accept reject letters I would have been able to only several years ago.” In the formal language of a typical rejection letter, O’Dell goes on to inform Duke that she will be attending the esteemed university in the fall, like it or not. “Despite Duke’s outstanding success in rejecting previous applicants, you simply did not meet my qualifications. Therefore, I will be attending Duke University’s 2015 freshmen class.” O’Dell also posted a response she received from Duke’s admissions department to her reaction to the school’s rejection. The department notes that O’Dell could appeal the decision, but says reversals are rare. “If you choose to appeal, we welcome your request, but I do not wish to raise unreasonable expectations on your part,” the university writes.
5 KEYS TO SAFER FOOD
CELEBRITY TWEETS
The World Health Organization’s simple message is to ensure food consumed is safe. According to WHO, unsafe food can cause more than 200 diseases ranging from diarrhoea to cancers. Such food can contain viruses, harmful bacteria or chemical substances. Undercooked foods of animal origin, fruits and vegetables contaminated with faeces, and shellfish containing marine biotoxins are detrimental to one’s health. Food production has been industrialised and its trade and distribution have been globalised. These changes introduce multiple new opportunities for food to become contaminated with harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemicals. Ensuring food is clean and safe is not just good for the community but a precaution against health crisis internationally. A local food safety problem can rapidly become an international emergency. Investigation of an outbreak of food borne disease is vastly more complicated when a single plate or package of food contains ingredients from multiple countries. Here are five tips that can help you adopt a healthier, safer diet.
KEEP CLEAN • Wash your hands before handling food and often during food preparation • Wash your hands after going to the toilet • Wash and sanitize all surfaces and equipment used for food preparation • Protect kitchen areas and food from insects, pests and other animals WHY: While most microorganisms do not cause disease, dangerous microorganisms are widely found in soil, water, animals and people. These microorganisms are carried on hands, wiping cloths and utensils, especially cutting boards and the slightest contact can transfer them to food and cause foodborne diseases.
SEPARATE RAW AND COOKED • Separate raw meat, poultry and seafood from other foods • Use separate equipment and utensis such as knives and cutting boards for handling raw foods • Store food in containers to avoid contact bewteen raw and prepared foods. WHY: Raw food especially meat, poultry and seafood, and their juices, can contain dangerous microorganisms which may be transferred onto others foods during food perparation and storage. COOK THOROUGHLY • Cook food thoroughly, especially meat, poultry, eggs and seafood • Bring foods like soups and stews to boiling to make sure that they have reached 70oc. For meat and poultry, make sure that juices are clear, not pink. Ideally, use a thermometer. • Reheat cooked food thoroughly. WHY: Proper cooking kills almost all dangerous microorganisms. Studies have shown that Cooking food to a temeperature of 70oC can help ensure it is safe for consumption. Foods that require special attention include minced meats, rolled roasts, large joints of meat and whole poultry.
KEEP FOOD AT SAFE TEMPERATURE • Do not leave cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours. • Refrigerate promply all cooked and perishable food (pereferably below 5oC) • Keep cooked food piping hot (more than 60oC) prior to serving • Do not store food too long - even in the refrigerator • Do not thaw frozen food at room temperature.
USE SAFE WATER AND RAW MATERIALS. • Use safe water or treat it to make it safe • Select fresh and wholesome foods • Choose foods processed for safety, such as pasteurized milk • Wash fruits and vegetables, especially if eaten raw • Do not use food beyond its expiry date.
WHY: Microorganisms can multiply very quickly if food is stored at room temperature. By holding at temperatures below 5oC or above 6oC, the growth of microorganisms is slowed down or stopped. Some dangerous microorganisms still grow below 5oC.
WHY: Raw materisla, including water and ice may be contaminated with dangerous microoranisms and chemicals. Toxic chemicals may be formed in damaged and mouldy foods. Care in selection of raw materials and smiple measures such as washing and peeling may reduce the risk.

Dh100,000 stolen from parked car in Al Ain Al Ain Police have arrested five Arab nationals for stealing Dh100,000 from a parked car. Colonel Mohammed Suhail Rashidi, Al Ain city police director said, a bank customer had left the money in his car to enter a shop during which time the thieves broke the vehicle’s glass and stole the money.
in the presence of the offenders or in their absence,” the paper said.
Police said the arrested people had admitted seeing the customer leave the bank with money and monitoring his movements. They moved to the car when it stopped and the bank customer entered a shop, broke the vehicle’s windshield and fled with money, Col. Rashidi said.
It quoted a traffic police official as saying drivers of taxis and other cars are responsible for such offences and are penalised accordingly. “As for buses and other public transport vehicles, the drivers are not responsible for such a behaviour.
UAE-Omani anti-narc units seize 13kg heroin
“Only the passengers who are caught or seen doing so will be punished. The driver can also identify the offenders in the bus.”
Thirteen kilogrammes of heroin and 34,000 narcotic pills were seized and nine drug smugglers were arrested in five separate operations carried out in February and March across the UAE by the Anti-Narcotics Federal Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior, and Police anti-narcotic units in coordination and cooperation with the General Department for Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of the Sultanate of Oman.
Dh500 fine, 4 black points for throwing waste from car
Drivers will be fined Dh500 and have four black points added to their traffic record if they or their passengers are caught throwing waste out of the car.
The offence, part of recent traffic law amendments, involves throwing any kind of waste or spitting out of the window while the car is moving. In case of public transport vehicles, only passengers who are caught committing that offence will be punished, according to the new federal traffic law. “The new law is intended not only to ensure the safety of road users, but also to protect the environment and keep the country clean. “Penalties for such offences are either given
The report said the new law authorised both the police and the municipalities to punish offenders for such violations on roads.
Mobile radar patrolling Dubai-Al Ain Road
Motorists who try to trick the permanent speed radars on Dubai roads by slowing down while approaching them and then speeding off again once past them are in for a well-deserved surprise this morning.
The Dubai-Al Ain road, where the RTA had earlier this month slashed the speed limit from 120kmph to 100kmph, is being monitored by at least three mobile radar patrols this morning. “Apart from the regular speed cameras on the stretch, I spotted three mobile patrols this morning,” a motorist told. The sections of the road that have seen a reduction in maximum speed limit include the extended part between the intersection of Emirates Road and the intersection of Bou Gedra. Dubai’s Roads &Transport Authority said it was considering slashing maximum speed limits on a number of other Dubai roads as well. Hussein Al Banna, Director of Traffic Department at the RTA said that the ongoing 10 The Source
Colonel Saeed Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director General of Anti-Narcotics Federal Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior, said the vigilant anti-narcotic teams had dealt a severe blow to drug traffickers thanks to the constructive cooperation with their counterparts in Oman. Unveiling details about these operations, Colonel Al Suwaidi said the teams had received information from Oman which led them to abort the first two attempts to smuggle 12,500kg of heroin into the country by two Arab and African suspects in the emirates of Ajman and Umm Al Quiwain.
review of roads and traffic safety has resulted in a significant decline in traffic fatalities in Dubai. He added that the extension of Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road, between the intersection of Mirdif City Centre to the border of Sharjah, is one of the roads being considered for speed limit revision. Determining the speed for a road depends on several factors, including the level of urban development on both sides of the road, existence of schools, mosques and other vital facilities.
A total 2,500 narcotic pills were also seized in the emirate of Umm Al Qaiwain. In the third and fourth operations, he said, two African women were arrested for possessing 500 grammes of heroin while 22,500 narcotic tablets were captured in Dubai. Three Arab suspects were apprehended. In the final operation, which took place in Ras Al Khaimah, 9,000 narcotic tablets were seized in possession of two Arab and African suspects.

Fatu, the most recently born northern white rhino, will likely be the last.
Scientists call the mass wiping out of species by humans the “Sixth Great Extinction” - the fifth being the one that killed off the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The northern white rhino’s extinction is unusual only because it is such a large, recognizable animal.
Modern rhinos have plodded the earth for 26 million years. As recently as the mid-19th century there were over a million in Africa. The last northern whites disappeared from the wild a decade ago and will soon follow the western black rhino, declared extinct in 2011. Assisted reproduction may yet bring the northern white back but if they cannot be reintroduced into the wild then, some ask, what is the point? “If they’re just to become museum specimens in zoos then it’s perhaps time to see them go,” said Dr Rob Brett, regional director for Africa at Fauna and Flora International. To deter poachers the northern whites are escorted by armed wardens at night and their horns are trimmed back to uneven stumps. The horns are worth more than $65,000 a kilo on the Asian black market, and sought after by consumers who are falsely convinced that the ground-up keratin -- the same substance as human fingernails and toenails -- contains powerful medicinal properties. Human beings are supposed to be the only animals on the planet with the ability to reason; as we witness the extinction of these majestic beasts, I question this ability and hang my head in shame!

AL AIN DIARY AND
ABDULLAH SAIF AL DARMAKI Giving ice cream a fresh and healthy new appeal! By: Farid Nouisser

ith summer just around the corner, I scream, you scream and we all scream for ice cream! I think it is safe to say that almost everyone enjoys the cool, satisfying taste of fine ice cream and nothing can be finer than tooting our horns on a global scale, knowing that the world’s first mass produced, 100% camel milk ice cream is now ready for your enjoyment courtesy of our friends at Al Ain Dairy. The Source capitalized on the opportunity to sit down with the man in charge at Al Ain Dairy. Meet Abdullah Saif Al Darmaki, a humble and inspired leader who shared with us a little about his life and a great deal about the exciting launch of Camelait ice cream products. Were you raised and educated in Al Ain? “I was born right here in Al Ain and am proud to be a part of this beautiful Garden City. I have very fond memories of an easy life growing up that did not revolve around money and as such, was free of the many complications we are confronted with as a society today. I studied here and graduated from UAEU in 1995 with a degree in agricultural engineering as well as several courses in management training.” When did you take the helm at Al Ain Dairy? “Al Ain Dairy has existed since 1981 and I joined the company in 2007 and am proud to have been a part of the incredible success and innovations of the largest dairy producer in the UAE.”
al majlis
Was camel milk always part of the plan at Al Ain Dairy? “Inspired by HH Sheikh Zayed Al Nayhan, we introduced camels to the organization in 2001. Since our beginnings 30 years ago, under the directive of HH Sheikh Zayed Al Nayhan, who envisioned something most thought impossible, we continually strive to bring innovative products to the market.” You must be extremely proud of being the first commercial producers of camel milk ice cream in the world. “This achievement is of paramount importance, not only for the dairy but for the UAE as a whole. Handling the complex proteins of camel milk in the pasteurization process to produce ice cream was a major challenge overcome during the innovation process. The result is rich, luxurious ice cream available in 6 indulgent flavors – Date, Saffron, Cardamom, Chocolate, Carmel and Lite Raspberry Vanilla. This unique ice cream combines 100% fresh camel milk ice cream with ripples of complimentary sauces and/or nut pieces that appeal to all tastes while also complimenting the traditional tastes of the Arabian region. I should also mention that along with the Camelait Ice Cream, we have blazed a trail with the introduction of camel milk powder, employing a complex production method exclusive to Al Ain Dairy in the UAE.” Camel milk has some incredible health benefits; can you elaborate on these? “With the help of modern day science, camel milk is now known as a nutritional
powerhouse and medical marvel. New benefits are continually being discovered with evidence that supports improvement in conditions ranging from autism to diabetes. Camel milk products appeal to the health conscious individual as they are naturally lower in fat than cow’s milk and packed with nutrients to also aid in beauty and overall well-being. There are no known allergies to camel milk, making it a perfect solution for lactose-intolerant adults and infants with allergies. Camel milk contains natural moisturizing properties to provide a smoothing effect on skin and can also have beneficial properties in treating psoriasis patients by both topical and ingestion applications.” Your innovative new products have created quite a stir on the market not to mention receiving several awards; can you share some of these with our readers? “Recent accolades include: “Most Innovative Product” prize at SIAL 2014, nominated as “Highly Recommended Product” at Gulfoods 2015, named “Favorite Dairy Brand” by BBC Good Food ME and “Best Nutritional Drink” at Dubai Drink Technology Expo. With the international exposure the products have already received at SIAL Paris, SIAL Middle East and Gulfoods 2015, export plans are on the horizon as discussions with global distribution partners are underway. As the demand for naturally nutritious products continually rises in European and North American markets, the presence of our Camelait products is necessary now more than ever. And with new studies showing promising medical benefits, it is our mission to ensure these locally produced products are available to consumers around the world.” Meeting with Abdullah Saif Al Darmaki was an extreme pleasure, not to mention a most educational experience and before departing, I simply had to try the Camelait ice cream. As the sumptuous flavours exploded on my palate, it was comforting to know that this delightful treat was actually good for me. I made sure to grab some for my two boys and couldn’t wait to ask, “Will that be one hump or two on your cone?” The Source

urban woman
Earth Day and Women April 22nd marks the 45th anniversary of Earth Day and as we grapple with the reality of climate change, we can take heart in the initiatives that many women are taking to overcome it. We can look back on a year of record-breaking extreme weather on every continent and raging conflict over natural resources. These are the symptoms of a global crisis that threatens the very viability of our planet. But we are also on the verge of another tipping point, as hopeful as the threat is grave. More and more people are realizing that we cannot continue to live outside the laws of nature. They see that we have the capability to reinvent our economies and lifestyles on a sustainable basis and in ways that safeguard human rights. Increasingly, people are focused on creating concrete, realizable solutions that are both local and systemic. Women are at the center of this movement to reset the course of the world. Working through local organizations in every region, women are improving health systems, combating hunger and poverty, preserving biodiversity, mitigating climate change and demanding human rights. In Nicaragua, women are developing small-scale, organic family farms. In Kenya, women are leading projects to dig wells and build pipelines for access to clean water. In Sudan, women farmers hit hard by climate change are unionizing to demand the resources and training they need to earn income and develop their communities. Women have always been at the center of both economy and ecology. Both words come from the Greek term for household — the arena of women’s traditional roles as primary caretakers of families and communities. Even today, in nearly every society, women are mainly responsible for providing families with healthy food, clean water and — particularly in the Global south — sufficient fuel. These resources depend on the health of the environment, and that’s why women play such a vital role. But the ecosystems that have always provided food and energy have been exploited to their breaking points. That’s because our global economy is irrational and amoral: It seeks infinite growth on a finite planet without regard for people’s well-being. Today, our success depends on rejecting an economic model that prioritizes profit above all else. In its place, we can look to the nascent solutions that women are developing in communities worldwide. 16

Driverless cars: increased road safety and efficiency or ‘lethal weapons’?
T
he idea of driverless cars isn’t entirely new. Internet giant Google has clocked up more than 140,000 miles or so in its fleet of c o m p u t e r- d i r e c t e d prototype vehicles. But now they look to become more main stream. Should we be welcoming the prospect of swapping man for machine behind the wheel? Will it make the world a better place? SAFER AND GREENER DRIVING The lab coats from the automotive industry certainly appear to think so. Their confidence is based on one founding premise: that smart technologies can operate cars a whole lot better and more efficiently than people. Ultimately the journey that the industry is on has benefits for safety and the environment too. Imagine a car that can communicate with the cloud to identify the location of accidents or road congestion ahead, and then automatically re-route, for instance. Or put yourself in a vehicle that can “talk” to traffic lights wirelessly and regulate your speed so as to hit a green light every time. This is very efficient since stopping and 18 The Source
starting exerts a greater load on the engine, which translates into more fuel consumption. It’s the promise of greater safety where autonomous driving really comes into its own, industry advocates claim. Ultimately, most accidents happen as a result of human error. Computers don’t get bored or distracted, or take their eyes off the road because they want to change the radio station or make a phone call. Hands-free driving for the masses is still some way off, but existing technologies offer a taste of what’s to come. Buy a new Ford, for instance, and you may well find it equipped with automated systems that park for you, that regulate your speed depending on the vehicle in front (so-called adaptive cruise control) or even break to avoid a collision (active city stop). Jaguar Land Rover launched a snazzy piece of software that uses artificial intelligence techniques to learn your preferences and second-guess driving responses. This “selflearning car” takes information from your calendar and clock and takes account of traffic conditions and weather patterns. COMBATTING CONGESTION The same types of smart technologies hold out the hope of less congestion too. According to Ford, the number of cars on
the world’s roads is set to increase from 1bn today, to 2bn by 2050, presenting a very real risk of global gridlock. By around the end of the decade, the US carmaker expects to see cloud-based systems in vehicles that will enable drivers to identify free car parking spaces in city centers or pre-book parking slots. In the longer term, drivers may even get advice on when it’s quicker to leave their cars and jump on nearby public transport. QUESTION MARKS For all the new gizmos being dreamt up by carmakers, it will take more than these to make autonomous driving a reality. Vehicles don’t only need to talk to themselves; they need to be able to communicate with other cars on the road and the road infrastructure itself. Even then, the prospect of driverless private transport isn’t without its question marks. As with any technology, however smart, lack of interoperability and straightforward systems failure always pose a potential risk. You can live with that if it’s your phone or printer; not if it’s a car travelling at 40mph. Of course, it could be that people just like being in control behind the wheel. Autonomy, after all, is a very personal thing.

The event, entitled SPARK, is designed to bring educators together to share, collaborate and explore what is working well in their classrooms or schools. The SPARK concept has been operating in the United Kingdom since 2005, where it is known as TeachMeet and is fast becoming globally renowned. The SPARK model involves organised and informal gatherings of teachers aiming to share good practice, provide personal insights and discuss practical innovations that work in the classroom. Each event allows education practitioners to deliver either a three minute or seven minute presentation on a topic that interests them. 20 The Source
Over just two years of operations, SPARK has hosted a range of popular events in Dubai, Doha, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and the UK. Each event has been very well attended; in Dubai, for example, an event hosted by the School of Research Science hosted over 250 educators from 51 different schools,

cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. It is most common in older people and can be in either or both eyes. However, it cannot spread from one eye to the other.
The part that becomes cloudy is the lens. This is normally the clear part of the eye. The retina is the lightsensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Light has to pass through a transparent lens to the retina and then the nerve signals travel to the brain. The lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy from a cataract, the image you see will be blurred. Besides age related, there are other types of cataracts. Secondary cataracts can occur after surgery or in association with glaucoma. Secondary cataracts can occur in people who have other health issues such as diabetes. Eye injuries can also lead to cataracts. Congenital cataracts are those that occur in babies and early childhood. These may be small enough to not affect vision but are removed if they do. The lens is made of mostly water and protein. The protein is arranged precisely to keep the lens clear for light to pass through. Theories about the protein clumping together or wear and tear of the lens are popular but there is no one answer. You don’t have to be a senior citizen to get this type of cataract. In fact, people can have an age-related cataract in their 40s and 50s. But during middle age, most cataracts are small and do not affect vision. It is after age 60 that most cataracts affect vision.

The most common symptoms of a cataract are: • Cloudy or blurry vision. •
Colors seem faded.
•
Glare. Headlights, lamps, or sunlight may appear too bright. A halo may appear around lights.
•
Poor night vision.
•
Double vision or multiple images in one eye. (This symptom may clear as the cataract gets larger.)
•
Frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses.
•
These symptoms can also be a sign of other eye problems. If you have any of
these symptoms, check with your eye care professional. Early cataract symptoms may be improved with new eyeglasses, brighter lighting, antiglare sunglasses, or magnifying lenses. If these measures do not help, surgery is the only effective treatment. Surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. An ordinary cataract needs to be removed only when vision loss interferes with your everyday activities, such as driving, reading, or watching TV. You and your eye care professional can make this decision together. Once you understand the benefits and risks of surgery, you can make an informed decision about whether cataract surgery is right for you. In most cases, delaying cataract surgery will not cause long-term damage to your eye or make the surgery more difficult. If you have cataracts in both eyes that require surgery, the surgery will be performed on each eye at separate times, usually four to eight weeks apart. Many people who need cataract surgery also have other eye conditions, such as agerelated macular degeneration or glaucoma. If you have other eye conditions in addition to cataract, talk with your doctor. Learn about the risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected results of cataract surgery. However, always consult your eye care professional about any doubts you have.

10 Ways Your Family Can Help Protect the Environment on Earth Day
L
ooking for a unique way to celebrate Earth Day with your kids this year? These eco-friendly ideas will help your whole family get into the act when it comes to protecting the environment.
1. Organize a community cleanup Whether it’s at your kids’ school, a neighborhood park, along a hiking trail or someplace else in your community, get your family involved in a community cleanup effort on Earth Day. Enlist your friends and advertise the cleanup effort locally to encourage others to join in your efforts. 2. Plant something For kids who love to play in the dirt, gardening is a natural fit. Get your kids involved in planting shrubs, a tree, flowers, vegetables or other plants in your yard. If you choose something like shrubs or a tree, they’ll stick around year after year to remind you of your Earth Day efforts (with proper care, of course). 3. Organize a recycling drive Think of places where recycling is needed in your community but currently isn’t done or isn’t very convenient. Do you have curbside recycling? Are there recycling containers at your children’s school, local playgrounds, community center or other places you frequent?

4. Park the family car If you have a car, consider walking, biking or taking public transportation where possible on Earth Day. If you must drive, take shorter or fewer trips and make sure you’re getting the best mileage you can out of your car by taking steps such as properly inflating the tires. 5. Curb your electricity use Opt for candles at night instead of electric lights. If you need to clean up, choose a broom rather than a vacuum. Read your kids an eco-friendly book rather than letting them watch television. 6. Save water Check your home for leaky faucets. If you don’t already do so, encourage everyone to turn off the water while brushing their teeth
and washing their faces and hands. See who can take the fastest shower (and still get clean). Use a broom rather than a hose to clean your driveway or sidewalk. 7. Donate or swap things you don’t need Recycle toys, clothes and other household items you’re no longer using by donating them. You can also collect donations or arrange a community swap event where kids bring their old toys and books to trade. 8. Install houses or feeders for wildlife Install houses for birds, bats or other wildlife in your yard or set up a feeder for birds. To get your kids into the act, consider having them build or decorate the birdhouse or make the feeder. 9. Raise money for a good cause Choose an eco-friendly charity your family supports and find a way to raise money for it. You can collect monetary donations directly, hold an Earth Day yard sale or sell eco-friendly crafts made by your family. Once again, encourage your friends and neighbours to join in. 10. Commit to change Think of one simple way to reduce your family’s carbon footprint and commit to doing it. If you need an incentive to get yourself started, consider rewarding your family if you successfully implement the change. Don’t forget to choose an ecofriendly reward, too!

THE HISTORY OF
EARTH DAY and our Social Responsibility
E
arth Day is the name given to two different annual observances that are intended to raise awareness about a wide range of environmental issues and problems, and to inspire people to take personal action to address them.
Except for that general goal, the two events are unrelated, even though both were founded about a month

apart in 1970 and both have gained wider acceptance and popularity ever since.

THE FIRST EARTH DAY
McConnell suggested an annual observance to remind the people of Earth of their shared responsibility as environmental stewards. He chose the vernal equinox—the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere, the first day of autumn in the southern hemisphere— because it is a day of renewal.
In the United States, Earth Day is celebrated by most people on April 22, but there is another celebration that predates that one by approximately a month and is celebrated internationally. The first Earth Day celebration took place on March 21, 1970, the vernal equinox that year. It was the brainchild of John McConnell, a newspaper publisher and influential community activist, who proposed the idea of a global holiday called Earth Day at a

social & community forum aside their differences and recognize their common need to preserve Earth’s resources. On February 26, 1971, U.N. SecretaryGeneral U Thant signed a proclamation saying that the United Nations would celebrate Earth Day annually on the vernal equinox, thereby officially establishing the March date as the international Earth Day. In his Earth Day statement on March 21, 1971, U Thant said, “May there only be peaceful and cheerful Earth Days to come for our beautiful Spaceship Earth as it continues to spin and circle in frigid space with its warm and fragile cargo of animate life.” The United Nations continues to celebrate Earth Day each year by ringing the Peace Bell at U.N. headquarters in New York at the precise moment of the vernal equinox. THE HISTORY AMERICA
OF
EARTH
DAY
IN
On April 22, 1970, the Environmental TeachIn held a nationwide day of environmental education and activism that it called Earth Day. The event was inspired and organized by environmental activist and U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin. Nelson wanted to show other U.S. politicians that there was widespread public support for a political agenda centered on environmental issues. Nelson began organizing the event from his Senate office, assigning two staff members to work on it, but soon more space and more people were needed. John Gardner, founder of Common Cause, donated office space. Nelson selected Denis Hayes, a Harvard University student, to coordinate Earth Day activities and gave him a staff of volunteer college students to help.
The event was wildly successful, sparking Earth Day celebrations at thousands of colleges, universities, schools and communities all across the United States. An October 1993 article in American Heritage Magazine proclaimed, “…April 22, 1970, Earth Day was…one of the most remarkable happenings in the history of democracy… 20 million people demonstrated their support… American politics and public policy would never be the same again.” Following the Earth Day celebration inspired by Nelson, which demonstrated widespread grassroots support for environmental legislation, Congress passed many important environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, as well as laws to protect wilderness areas. The Environmental Protection Agency was created within three years after Earth Day 1970. In 1995, Nelson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton for his role in founding Earth Day, raising awareness of environmental issues, and promoting environmental action. THE IMPORTANCE OF EARTH DAY NOW No matter when you celebrate Earth Day, its message about the personal responsibility we all share to “think globally and act locally” as environmental stewards of planet Earth has never been more timely or important. Our planet is in crisis due to global warming, overpopulation, and other critical environmental issues. Every person on Earth shares the responsibility to do as much as they can to preserve the planet’s finite natural resources today and for future generations.
WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?
Global warming is the increase of earth’s average surface temperature due to the effect of greenhouse gases. These greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane absorb heat that would otherwise escape from earth. Global warming has emerged as one of the biggest environmental issues in decades.
According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports, the earth’s temperature has increased by 0.8 degrees Celsius over the past century. More than half of this increase has happened in the last 25 years. It seems that the temperature is rising at a rate faster than ever before. Human activities like burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, industrialization and pollution are some of the factors responsible for global warming.

Jaden Smith: The Real Reason He’s Wearing Women’s Dresses
But after so many looks, outfits and signature poses, what is making the 34-year-old say goodbye? It’s all about the body. “Automatically my body tells me if what I do is worth it, and it asked to stop,” she told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper via Yahoo. “I respect my body, it’s a privilege to be able to stop.” And when it comes to that famous body so respected in the industry, a few less walks on the runway certainly won’t stop the proud mom from looking her best. Just last month, the model showed off her super-toned body while on vacation. “Thank you to all my dear fans who dedicated their time to leave a message here,” she captioned a bikini

Kim and Khloé Kardashian Travel to Late Father Robert Kardashian’s Ancestral Home in Armenia The Kardashian’s family trip to Armenia just became that much more special.
His sister, Willow, also raids his closet, according to another source. “Jaden has worn so many different clothes geared for girls that Willow borrows stuff from his closet,” the insider revealed. “It is completely a fashion choice and nothing more, and Jaden will continue wearing dresses and girls’ clothing for a very long time if not forever!”
As Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner arrived at the Coachella Music Festival in the California desert, big sisters Kim Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian continued their meaningful vacation with a trip to Gyumri, a city outside the Armenian capital of Yerevan. Armenian records indicate that the late Robert Kardashian’s family lived in the historical town. As a result, the group made it a priority to visit their modest ancestral family home. “Jaden is a very experimental dresser, he’s always been a fashionista at heart,” a source tells. “He likes wearing men skirts and long, thin T-shirts that look like dresses because that’s a high-end fashion statement at the moment. Kristen Bell : Marrying Dax Shepard was the “Best Decision I’ve Made,”
It’s not every day you hear Kristen Bell talk about her personal life. But when she does, it’s oh-sosweet!
While participating in a Twitter Q&A in support of the nonprofit Opening Act Saturday afternoon, the Frozen star was asked about her husband Dax Shepard. Let’s just say her answers were nothing short of lovely. When a Twitter follower asked the actress for a moment in life she would like to repeat, Bell immediately went back to her wedding day. “moment i promised myself to @daxshepard1,” she shared. “best decision ive made 2date #OAchats” But wait, there’s more. Another user asked what makes the relationship work so well in the Hollywood spotlight. Well, it’s not easy. But it’s totally worth it.

Virry: An application to explore the animal kingdom ‘home’ in the UAE, Fountain Digital Labs has recently signed a MoU with Zayed Higher Organization, to grant children with special needs in the country free access to their newly launched application. This signing took place at Al Ain Zoo, during the launch of the Virry Application, where the animal and scenery footage is filmed.
Fountain Digital Labs has recently launched Virry, an application designed for children who are eager to explore the animal kingdom, offering endless hours of wildlife entertainment and learning in different forms via Smart Technology. The application includes unprecedented and immersive live-streaming technology that gives young children real-time access to their favourite wild animals and their actual behaviours. It also features interactive videos that help children practice life skills such as impulse control, creativity, reasoning, and problem solving by virtually engaging with their favourite animals in fun games. The games, experienced from the animal’s point of view require the user to play through interaction such as tilting the iPAD or phone to drop food for the Lion, and shouting into their device to attract the Lion to the meat. Children will learn to respond to the needs of different animals by breaking down simple problems, developing strategies to solve them, and getting rewarded through positive feedback. Extensive video playlists are also available, where children
can follow emotional threads to connect different animals and their behaviours, promoting empathy and understanding in an entertaining way. Curated high-quality videos show the connections and common behaviours across species, allowing children to gain a broader understanding of animal life. Virry has been created in collaboration with leading child development researchers, and the resulting innovative and fun ways of interacting within the game means the learning is more effective. Children with Special Needs benefit greatly from such enhanced methods of active engagement and to celebrate its worldwide launch and
The filmed content includes exclusive behind the scenes footage at the zoo, shot by remote control and curated by wildlife documentarians with experience of working on animal shows for the BBC and Disney. This process meaning real animal behaviour is observed without human interaction, making Virry the first app to offer the chance to really interact with and understand exotic and captivating animals first hand. Virry was brought to life by an international team of award-winning film industry veterans, technology specialists, wildlife experts and academics, such as Professor Gail F. Melson, an authority on children’s development, author of Where the Wild Things Are: Animals in the Lives of Children and leader in the field of humananimal interaction at Purdue University.

Microsoft’s new app lets you control Powerpoint presentations with your Android device Microsoft quietly launched a new Android app called Office Remote for Android that lets you control Powerpoint presentations on your PC over Bluetooth. With the free app, dubbed Office Remote, you can control Powerpoint to advance through slides, play and pause embedded audio and video clips, switch to slide thumbnail view, check out speaker notes discreetly on your device and keep any eye on the presentation timer. Office Remote also works with Excel and Word, making it a neat tool to have if you frequently present spreadsheets and documents in front of an audience. With Excel, you can scroll, zoom and switch between worksheets, use filters and slicers, and hop to any named objects in your file. The app offers similar functionality on Word, and additionally lets you jump to headings and comments quickly. Office Remote was previously available only on Windows Phone 8. You’ll need Microsoft Office 2013 along with the desktop add-in installed on your Bluetooth-enabled PC for this to work.
Facebook’s Vine-esque app that takes things a step further and allows others to develop your videos further. Basically, you post a short clip and give it a tag. Others (not just your friends, but basically anybody) can “respond” to the clip by recording themselves. The service will automatically stitch clips together. So, this app could potentially lead to some of the most awesome video content on the Internet, but there’s also the danger of becoming a nest for the most boring clips ever – get that imagination engine running!

A pretty standard hardware monitoring app, which manages to adhere to Google’s Material Design pretty nicely and just manages to present its information in that good, flat, modernistic look. The developer promises further updates, such as widgets, so if you don’t have a monitoring app, but are thinking about getting one – you might as well hop on the development wagon of this one and watch it as it grows. Does your photo editor of choice lack the bokeh effect to create a really blurred scene? Well, this app can help. The app doesn’t do much else than blurring, so it may be questionable whether you’d want to spend $1 on it, but still – it’s simple, works in both “draw” or “fill with effect” modes, and is capable of blurring you beyond recognition. ertain particularly beautiful tropical islands brighten the desktops of thousands of computers around the world –extraordinary rocky shapes jutting out of the sea, adorned with sparkling beaches and covered in rich green jungle. These islands are exotic, compelling and like nothing else on earth. But the question on hundreds of people’s minds is – where on earth are they?
The mystery is hereby solved – these stunning castaway isles are found in the Palawan province of the Philippines, one of the world’s most beautifully preserved Edens. A naturally rich region with abundant forests and fishing, there’s little wonder that early Spanish explorers referred to Palawan as the ‘Land of Promise’. Located to the west of the country’s main island of Luzon, the isles of Palawan Province snake between the South 34 The Source

China Sea. It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers. The lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The underground river is reputed to be the world’s longest and has been officially included among the new 7 world natural wonders.
When you land for your Palawan adventure, odds are it will be just to the south of Puerto Princesa, at the region’s main airport. Found roughly in the centre of the large main island, from here a number of boat services and small charter flights can take you north, to the tourism destinations of El Nido, Busuanga and Pamalican, or south, to the remote isle of Balabac at the province’s tip.
Those who decide on the northern path will find one of the most striking sceneries at the tip of the main island, a six-hour bus ride or few hours’ flight from the capital; famed El Nido and its eerie rock formations. Relatively unexplored until almost 1980, the now-renowned area was serendipitously discovered by a few lucky stranded divers.
An absolute must for anyone’s bucket list can be found 50 km north of Puerto Princesa. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river. Off the coast of the main island, there are also some amazing spots; reachable by boat from El Nido, Linapacan Island is home to old Spanish ruins and unexplored jungle, and has recently become popular as a haven for backpackers and other visitors who long for something off the beaten path. Past Linapacan, the tourist-friendly islands of Culion, Busuanga and Coron offer a bit more civilization, with small towns, shopping, and restaurants. Coron in particular is known for its hot springs, waterfalls, and spectacular diving amidst the numerous Japanese shipwrecks that scatter the neighbouring sea floor. But one of Palawan’s most beautiful secrets is Amanpulo Resort on Pamalican Island, found in the secluded Cuyo group lying out into the brilliant blue Sulu Sea. the trip will have been more than worth it. The ecologically-rich island is truly a piece of the earth’s past, with no cities or major roadways, and just 20,000 scattered inhabitants.
Pamalican may be isolated, but the most southern route is only for the truly adventurous. No commercial flights service Balabac Island at Palawan’s bottom edge, and there are no airports, meaning those without access to a floatplane must take a leisurely 4-day boat journey from Puerta Princesa – that is, 4 days in good weather. But when you arrive at this far-flung island,
