ave you ever wasted time feeling sorry for yourself and subsequently exhausted valuable energy on negativity? I wish I had more money, a better job, better friends, a nicer car, more vacation time etc – sound familiar? I recently watched an inspired young psychologist on a Ted X talk explaining the importance of exercising the brain with an influx of positive thinking and thereby creating a reality of inner happiness that will inevitably lead to success. In other words, think positively and good things are sure to transpire. Fair enough, and just as the wisdom was taking hold and I prepared to shed some of my pent up negativity, an earthquake shook the ground in Nepal and shattered the lives of the inhabitants of an already impoverished nation. Why do these life shattering disasters, more often than not, always seem to strike areas of existing misery? Try telling these people to think and be positive!

There are remote villages in this country of 28 million that have been reduced to piles of rubble with survivors enduring an onslaught of insult to injury as relentless rain accompanies the aftershocks - not to mention a lack of food, water and shelter. But think positive! And remarkably, the human race is a resilient species of adaptability and some among the tragedy ravaged masses are able to maintain positivity in the face of complete and utter adversity – I am filled with shame at the thought. My life, like so many of the lives that make up my social network is blessed, and I vow to spend more time reflecting on the absurdity of sweating the small stuff when abundance cradles me. The situation in Nepal should be a wakeup call to all of us who sympathize with the less fortunate while watching the news and chucking an additional layer of butter and cheese on our fat and juicy steak sandwiches. My message today is simple: Let’s not sit around waiting for someone else to be the hero, rather be proactive and above all human by doing something - no matter how big or small - to help these people. If we all do a little, our collective efforts can save not just Nepal but the entire planet – think about it and then act…

Hyundai Genesis Writes Message In Sand That Can Be Seen From Space

A 13-year-old named Stephanie wanted to send her dad, who works on the International Space Station, a note. But rather than transmitting it electronically, she had the help of Hyundai in sending it via tire tracks made in sand by nearly a dozen Genesis sedans, with the automaker setting a new Guinness’s World Record in the process.

The first step was to identify the ideal location “based on numerous geographical and meteorological factors,” Hyundai said in a statement. It also had to be large enough to write the massive message – which covers an area of more than two square miles, or equivalent to one and a half times the size of New York City’s Central Park – so that Stephanie’s dad could view it from space. The Delamar Dry Lake in Nevada was selected, and Hyundai dispatched 11 Genesis sedans to the area’s flat, featureless desert floor, along with an international team that included a film crew, stunt drivers, surveyors and others. After the location was surveyed, the vehicles were fitted with special studded tires to make the tracks in the sand that could be seen from space.

The path of the vehicles had to be perfectly synchronized to recreate Stephanie’s original hand-written message. Everyone involved also had to hope for good weather, since rain and wind could easily wipe the message away, and clear skies so that Stephanie’s astronaut dad could read it from space. The mission was not only successful since it could be seen by Stephanie’s dad, but was officially recognized as “the largest tire track image” ever by Guinness World Records. It also showed that cars can be used to connect not just to the “cloud” but even with people in space and, as Hyundai’s creative director on the project, Gunn Ho Park, says in a behind-the-scenes video, that “a car can be more than just a means of transportation.”

What Should I Do Before, During, And After An Earthquake? WHAT TO DO BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE • Make sure you have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, and extra batteries at home. • Learn first aid. • Learn how to turn off the gas, water, and electricity. • Make up a plan of where to meet your family after an earthquake. • Don’t leave heavy objects on shelves (they’ll fall during a quake). • Anchor heavy furniture, cupboards, and appliances to the walls or floor.

Learn the earthquake plan at your school or workplace.

WHAT TO DO DURING AN EARTHQUAKE • Stay calm! If you’re indoors, stay inside. If you’re outside, stay outside. • If you’re indoors, stand against a wall near the center of the building, stand in a doorway, or crawl under heavy furniture (a desk or table). Stay away from windows and outside doors. • If you’re outdoors, stay in the open away from power lines or anything that

might fall. Stay away from buildings (stuff might fall off the building or the building could fall on you). Don’t use matches, candles, or any flame. Broken gas lines and fire don’t mix. If you’re in a car, stop the car and stay inside the car until the earthquake stops. Don’t use elevators (they’ll probably get stuck anyway).

• WHAT TO DO AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE • Check yourself and others for injuries. Provide first aid for anyone who needs it. • Check water, gas, and electric lines for damage. If any are damaged, shut off the valves. Check for the smell of gas. If you smell it, open all the windows and doors, leave immediately, and report it to the authorities (use someone else’s phone). • Turn on the radio. Don’t use the phone unless it’s an emergency. • Stay out of damaged buildings. • Be careful around broken glass and debris. Wear boots or sturdy shoes to keep from cutting your feet. • Be careful of chimneys (they may fall on you). • Stay away from beaches. Tsunamis and seiches sometimes hit after the ground has stopped shaking. • Stay away from damaged areas. • If you’re at school or work, follow the emergency plan or the instructions of the person in charge. • Expect aftershocks.

All 19 Bangladeshi victims of Al Ain crash 2013 get blood money Blood money for the family of the one remaining Bangladeshi worker who died in a horrific road crash in Al Ain in 2013 — which was delayed due to a technical issue — was paid out on Wednesday. “Now we have received the blood money for the families of all 19 Bangladeshi victims,” Mohammad Imran said. Blood money worth around Dh4 million in total for 18 Bangladeshi workers was disbursed by Aman, the insurance company, following a recent order by an Al Ain court. Of the 21 workers who died in the accident that occurred on February 4, 2013, 19 were Bangladeshi, while one was an Indian and the other an Egyptian. Twenty three other workers were also injured when a truck carrying sand and crushed stones veered off the road and collided with the workers’ bus. Many workers died on the spot and some of their bodies were mutilated beyond recognition as they were trapped in the bus and covered in sand that fell from the truck. All the bodies were repatriated to their native countries. The status of the blood money for Indian And Egyptian victims was

not available as of yesterday. The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi said it had lost contact with the family of the Indian victims due to certain communication problems. “Now, we have contacted the family and asked them to execute a power of attorney in favour of the embassy. A copy of this communication has gone to the district magistrate of the area, whose office will help the family in this regard. We are following it up and doing everything to secure the money for the family,” a senior official said. The Egyptian Embassy could not provide any information about the status of the blood money for the victims from their countries.

Youth stabbed to death by roommates in Dubai Minor row over light in room turned violent

A petty row over switching off the light in a room shared by four workers in Jebel Ali turned violent, ending in the killing of one of them. The dead man has been identified as Mahin Yousuf, 22, Indian, carpenter in an interior decoration company, who came to the UAE six months ago. After the dispute over light in the room erupted, the three room-mates stabbed Mahin who died on the spot. The people who killed Mahin were the victim’s friends and their joint photo was posted on their Facebook page only a day before the incident. A senior Dubai Police official said the victim’s three roommates have been arrested. “Some in the room wanted to sleep while others wanted to listen to radio or drink alcohol. All the four people in the room were drunk and three of them jointly killed the victim,” a senior Dubai Police official said. 10 The Source

Al Ain mum, two kids killed in house fire

The dead body has been sent to the forensic lab for further testing to decide how the person died. “Mahin was tired and wanted to sleep while others were drinking. A fight erupted over light in the room and his friends stabbed him to death,” said a friend of the deceased. Twelve people who worked for the interior decorations company shared two rooms in the Dubai Investment Park One, a labour accommodation pocket. Mohammed Yousuf, 44, father of the victim, speaking on phone from his hometown of Kollam in Kerala, said he was shocked to hear the sad news and family members are yet to recover. “He was only 21 years old and went to Dubai to bail out the family from debt that the family owed to money lenders. One month after going to Dubai, he came back with a stomach pain and underwent a surgery here for appendix. The company wanted him to return soon because there were not many people to work there,” said the father.

Tragedy struck an Arab family in the Eastern oasis town of Al Ain when a massive fire engulfed their house in the morning and charred a young mother and two little sons to death, newspapers reported on Friday. The father had just gone out to take his two older sons to school before going to work when the blaze erupted at the house in Murkhaniya area on Thursday morning. The mother, in her 20s, was found dead hugging her two sons Saif and Bilal, 4 and 5 years, apparently to protect them from the spreading fire. “Police and civil defence men who controlled the blaze found the dead mother cowering in one corner of the sitting room and hugging her two children… it was a tragic scene that saddened the entire neighbourhood,” the Arabic language daily Al Khaleej said. It quoted a police spokesman as saying the incident took place at around 9:30am and that it had opened an investigation to determine its cause.

TransAd kicks off special needs initiative in Al Ain The Centre for Regulation of Transport by Hire Cars (TransAD) took part in an initiative to support residents with special needs and ensure they attain their full rights as citizens and individuals. The campaign, called “Let’s Understand Them”, was launched at the Hili Wedding Hall in Al Ain, under the patronage of Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon and the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs. Organised by Al Dar Private School, the event was attended by 45 local government departments in co-ordination with the embassies of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and Sudan, among others. TransAD’s charity and voluntary works committee and its media and public relations department were on hand to demonstrate how a special needs taxi works and the services provided for the disabled. People with special needs can use discount cards provided by the Ministry of Social Affairs. Special needs taxis can be booked by calling 600 53 53 53.

CANADA, ALBERTA TAR SANDS

The Most Destructive Project on Earth

T

he Boreal forests in Alberta, Canada, are a unique and fragile ecosystem which is home to diverse cultures of the First Nation peoples. Their traditions have adapted to this complex landscape over centuries.

Today the landscape is scarred by Tar Sands extraction which has become known as “the most destructive project on Earth”. The scale is so enormous that the wound can be seen from space. The oil embedded in the sand lies under 140,000 km2 of forests, equivalent to the size of England. The Tar Sands process emits as much as four times more carbon dioxide 12 The Source

than conventional drilling. There is rapid deforestation as trees are cut down and the top layer of peat is removed to reveal the oil sands. Four barrels of water, energy equal to three barrels of oil, and four tons of earth are required to extract one barrel of oil. The extraction process contaminates the water and creates enormous toxic tailing ponds. It is estimated that thousands of migratory birds die every year when they land on the oily toxic surfaces, many more than the industry is reporting. First Nations communities living close to the oil sands or downstream on the Athabasca River are suffering from higher-than-normal cancer levels and illness. The tar sands could destroy over 149,000 square kilometers or Boreal forest an area the size of Florida. By 2020 they are expected to emit more than 141 million tons

of greenhouse gases – more than double that currently produced by all the cars and trucks in Canada and Alberta is now home to the world’s largest dam and it is built to hold the toxic waste from just one Tar Sands operation. The tar sands of Alberta are now the world’s largest industrial operation. Because of their sheer scale, all Canadians have become hostage to their development. Instead of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Canada is quickly increasing them and fully half of that emissions growth is projected to come from the Tar Sands. This is just beginning. The Alberta government has already given approvals that will double the size of existing operations, and has been talking with the US government to grow the Tar Sands five-fold in a “short time span” looking to move from 1 million barrels of oil per day to over 5 million The Tar Sands are now the biggest capital project anywhere on Earth and the biggest energy undertaking

environment

anywhere. With the Tar Sands, Canada has become the world’s dirty energy superpower. A FEW QUICK FACTS: • The Tar Sands can single handedly prevent Canada from meeting it’s international obligations under the Kyoto protocol. By 2020 the tar sands are expected to release over 141 megaton’s of GHG – twice that produced by all the cars and trucks in Canada. • An area the size of the state of Florida (149,000 km2) can be leased to oil sands development in the future. • It takes 3-5 barrels of fresh water to get a single barrel of oil from the tar sands. 350 million cubic meters is the volume of water currently allocated to the tar sands, the equivalent to the water required by a city of two million people. • Cumulatively, the environmental impact

of the tar sands has made Alberta the industrial air pollution capital of Canada, with one billion kilograms of emissions in 2003. 600 million cubic feet of Natural gas is used every day – that’s enough to heat more than three million Canadian homes. First Nation communities downstream of tar sands operation have been experiencing unprecedented rates of bile and colon cancer, lupus and other diseased that they believe are attributable to tar sands. 70% of the crude oil being extracted from the tar sands is exported directly to the United States mostly for use in transportation.

In January 2012, there was hope when the Obama administration rejected an application from a Canadian firm to build

the Keystone XL pipeline stretching 1,700 miles from the Alberta Tar Sands to Texas. However, this does not guarantee that the pipeline will never be built and the struggle to stop new pipelines is not over. First Nations communities are fiercely contesting another planned pipeline, Enbridge’s Northern Gateway. 730 miles of pipeline would carry 525,000 crude barrels from the Tar Sands daily to Kitimat on the British Columbian coast, to be shipped to Asia. The pipeline’s path is across pristine lakes, mountains and First Nations territory. It is supported by the Canadian government due to the large revenue it will generate. No First Nations in British Columbia have endorsed the pipeline. They fear that inevitable oil spills from the pipeline will leave permanent scars on their ancestral lands which they have a duty to protect for the next generation. The Source 13

Reasons Women Should Rule The World

M

en have ruled our world for all of recorded history, which has been a story of continuous wars, genocide, injustice, oppression and poverty. History demonstrates time and time again, that men do a terrible job in ruling our world. In the 20th century men came close to committing global suicide through nuclear warfare in the cold war between the USSR and NATO.

So would Women do a better job? As we see with all female animals, they have a powerful maternal instinct. Without this powerful instinct to nurture their young most mammals and birds on this planet, would go extinct. Likewise, women are natural care givers and most will devote their lives caring for children, as well as the sick, disabled, elderly and animals. If we had true matriarchal governments they would want to nurture and care for the people they rule. Here are 5 reasons why we would be in better shape if women were at the helm and in charge of the only home we have – mother earth!

1. WOMEN CAN MULTI-TASK. Studies have proven that women are better than men at multi-tasking. That said, I’m sure that women can accomplish more at one international summit than the men ever would in a year. They would probably even manage to fit in a session of manicure in between meetings. 2. WOMEN ARE PACIFISTS. Being women, we have lower levels of testosterone which makes us less aggressive than men, which means no (or at least fewer) wars, no violence, no prostitution, no drugs, no rapes…are you convinced yet? 3. WOMEN ARE VERY RESILIENT. Yes, more women get depressed than men but suicide rates for men are much higher than women. This means that more women suffer – physically and emotionally – but they do not give up easily. Women, more often than not, come out scarred but ALIVE and STRONGER from their battles. We can often find examples of such women around us every day. 4. WOMEN ARE FIERCELY PROTECTIVE AND LOYAL. Women would go to all lengths to protect the ones they love. Woe befalls on the person who threatens or speaks badly about her family or friends. We all know of women who are completely irrational because to them love and loyalty reign supreme over logic. Objectivity is over-rated. 5. WOMEN HAVE MORE EMOTIONAL EMPATHY THAN MEN. If you believe that world leaders should rule with compassion, then you cannot go wrong voting for women since they have been scientifically proven to be more emotionally intelligent than men. Women are capable of not just showing empathy for the poor, the outcasts, the orphans, the weak, the old, the handicapped but they actually DO something about it. 14

FAST AND FURIOUS

DUBAI’S

No one really wants an encounter with the police but boasting some of the fastest cars on earth as part of their police cruiser fleet, heightens the urge to be pulled over, in hopes of being taken away in one of these beauties.

Meet the pride of Dubai’s traffic arsenal:

have the BMW motorcycles and Toyota Land Cruiser V8s to patrol the roads.

1. Bugatti Veyron (UAE) - 2.5 Seconds; 407 km/h

The Bugatti Veyron is the successor to the previous flagship car – the Aston Martin 177 Q Series. Police officers in the UAE can chase down anything else on the road with the Bugatti Veyron. It is the world’s fastest production car, so it comes as no surprise that it can reach a lightning speed of 407 km. 2. Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 (Vietnam) - 2.9 seconds; 349 km/h The Aventador LP700-4 is an addition to several police fleets around the world, including Dubai and Europe has been going on. Well, Vietnam looks to continue this trend as it has also wrapped a Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. With a top speed of 349 km, the Italian exotic famous for its sleek and ominous styling is quick – very quick! Most notably, Lamborghini launched the Aventador series to celebrate its 50th

The Panamera boasts a top speed of 318 km/h. And of course, it is not the fastest of the bunch, but it will still catch any criminal easily. Well, unless the pursuit involves an escaping Bugatti Veyron or Pagani Zonda. birthday and was fast to find a spot in some of the top police fleets. In Vietnam, the car is mostly used to run down criminals and speeders in super high-speed sports cars. The supercar looks to continue discouraging “pedal to the metal” driving etiquette. 3. Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 (Indonesia) - 3.7 seconds; 330 km/h The 2013 Gallardo LP560-4 police cruiser is currently being showcased inside a shopping mall in Indonesia and has stirred much attention in the country. This speed demon is capable of reaching a lightning speed of 330km/h. Though such high speeds may be risky given the condition of roads in Indonesia but nevertheless, next time you find yourself resisting the urge to hit the gas in Indonesia, trust your instincts! 4. Porsche Panamera (Qatar) - 4.1 seconds; 318 km/h With a top speed of 318 km/h, the Porsche Panamera is the fastest police cruiser in Qatar. Notably, the Qatari government is a shareholder of Porsche and that probably reflects in the fact that Porsche cars make up a great majority of the Qatari police fleet. To augment the police fleet, the Qataris also

5. Chevrolet Camaro (Mexico) - 4.9 seconds; 249 km/h The Camaro is capable of going from 0-100 km/h in just under 5 seconds. And with a top speed of 249 km/h, it is undoubtedly the flagship police cruiser of the Mexican police force. In fact, Camaros is a popular choice for many police squads around the world. Dubai has one under its belt and so do many states over in the US. The popularity of the Camaro is not a surprise. It was the official pace car at Indy more than a handful of times so there is no doubt that the Camaro is the perfect combination of speed and muscle. Benz Booms with Frank Bernthaler & Al Fahim 18

For anyone living in the UAE and frequenting the many highways and byways of this country, one of the first things that becomes apparent is the unusually high number of luxury cars that grace our roads. An undeniably dominant player is the esteemed Mercedes Benz brand and The Source had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Frank Bernthaler, CEO of the Al Fahim Group’s Automotive Division, to discuss some of the current trends and success stories of the organization. Of German origin and hailing from the city of Stuttgart, Mr. Bernthaler brings 23 years of experience with Daimler and Chrysler across three continents in five different countries: Mexico, United States of America, Germany, Austria, and of course, the United Arab Emirates, where he has resided for the past 13 years.

The Source

al majlis Western Motors has also been highly active in joining hands with sister company, Safar Travel & Tourism, participating in Al Hilal Auto Festival, partaking in the SRT Drag Race in Yas Marina Circuit, as well as sponsoring the thrilling Redbull Air Race. In Al Ain, we are known for our genuinely engaging happenings, like the customer event called FUNatic for off-roaders which took place in March; or, sponsorship of the Mercedes-Benz Pro-Am Golf Tournament, as well as supporting international shooting competitions.

What are the achievements of Al Fahim Group Automotive in the luxury car segment? Al Fahim Group’s automotive business members have had an excellent year with new sales records and prestigious accomplishments. Recently, Eastern Motors, the group’s automotive member in Al Ain, has been awarded the 2014 Sheikh Khalifa Excellence Award (SKEA) Silver Category. Additionally, our flagship company, Emirates Motor Company, Mercedes-Benz authorized general distributor in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, received several awards by Daimler Middle East & Levant in many classes: Best Ever Sales Results, Best SUV Performance in the Region, Best Corporate Sales Performance in the Region as well as Best Growth Rate in Retail in the Region. Another one of our automotive subsidiaries, which has been recognized for outstanding results, was Central Motors & Equipment (CME). In the Bosch Annual Regional Convention, the Bosch Automotive UAE sole distributor was awarded Number One status for Overall Best Performing Partner in the Middle East & Northeast Africa region. What were your achievements in sales performance last year and the first quarter of this year? We have witnessed a considerable boom in the market in 2014 and are proud to announce that every business member in Al Fahim Group’s Automotive Division has witnessed a substantial sales increase. In the first quarter of this year, EMC recorded a healthy 25% increase across the MercedesBenz range of premium vehicles. Meanwhile, Western Motors recorded a 28% upsurge in Jeep sales, and an amazing growth of 200% in their Fiat brand, all compared to 2014. Being the Mercedes-Benz and Jeep distributors in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, which models are the most popular and successful? In the first three months of 2015, new models penetrated the market in both brands adding new customer segments; hence, new models becoming more popular than others. With the launch of the new, award-winning C-Class last year, we definitely cemented our leadership position in that segment. This year, it was the most popular model among all Mercedes-Benz models in Abu Dhabi. Other important models this year for our customers have been the S-Class, GL-Class and ML-Class. In the Jeep range, the Grand Cherokee Limited 3, Wrangler Sport 4-Door version and Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L were the most admired by our customers. In February, we launched the stunning Mercedes-Maybach S 600, and a month later, we officially introduced the sporty Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S. Later on in the year more new models will be coming

Moreover, CME was recognized by its principal Robert Bosch Middle East for their overall performance in 2014. Earlier in April, they arranged a fun trip with their Michelin dealers to maintain tight relationships, enhance engagement and have a balanced mix of business and leisure. Plus, CME has expanded their product line by recently being assigned as the authorized distributor for the Phillips 66 lubricant brand in the UAE. On a personal note, which of the many models of these fine automobiles is your favourite to drive?

in, one of them being the eye-catching new cross-over, Mercedes-Benz GLA. Now, Jeep and Fiat also had some new exciting launches with the new Jeep Cherokee and much awaited Fiat 500 Long, the 4-door version of the funky mini. Soon, we will be introducing the all-new Jeep Renegade, so there are lots of events planned for the automotive market. In this part of the world where luxury has a significant impact, do you find it difficult to compete? The competition is fierce in the GCC as one of the most important industries is the automotive sector following oil and gas, of course. To ensure Al Fahim Group remains a pioneer in the region, customer service excellence is put on the forefront for all our brands. Furthermore, we abide by a set of core values which have been instilled by the late founder of the group, Abdul Jalil Al Fahim (mercy upon him), where Humanity, Honesty, Substance, Foresight and Innovation play a vital role in the organization’s strategic actions. For example, EMC houses the world’s largest Mercedes-Benz dealer facility with state-of-the-art technology and unlimited commitment to service excellence. Being the flagship company of the family business, EMC partnered with various organizations to keep up with the ever-changing environment of the region. To name a few, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Al Hilal Bank, and many more.

For the daily commute, the S-Class is the best car I have ever driven. When I am going to the desert, I’d either take an ML or a GL or, if it gets really rough, a Jeep Wrangler. And for my short term trips, I found that the new Fiat 500L is also a great choice. As the CEO of a rather large organization, what do you like to do to relax on your time off? I usually spend my limited free time with the family, which is becoming a challenge when you have two teenage kids like we have, because they usually don’t want to hang around with mom and dad on the weekend. I run a lot, which is the best form of relaxation but also inspirational for me. And going out for a good lunch or dinner with my wife and friends is a fixed agenda item as well. As a successful executive, what advice can you give to the many young and upcoming leaders in the business world? Try to give your best in whatever you do, be humble in your approach to other people and always try to learn new things on a daily basis. In addition, being a team-player is essential, because one man alone can’t be successful. In my opinion the essentials of success are lots of personality, discipline and empathy. It certainly was a pleasure to sit and chat with Mr. Bernthaler and we wish him and The Al Fahim Group much continued success in the years to come. The Source

The Battle Continues at Wadi Adventure with W.A.R. 9 By: Farid Nouisser

As I approached the overfilled parking lot early on the morning of April 25th, I knew that the 9th installment of W.A.R. would be a battle worth fighting for! With close to 800 heroic participants turning out to test their skills in the obstacle littered labyrinth of torture, this was to be one of the most eventful editions of the very popular W.A.R. series. It was an absolute scorcher as the sun inched higher and higher on that morning and after a mere hour of enduring its rays, my unprotected skin assumed a lobster like appearance as I scrambled along the course snapping photos of the very brave – perhaps insane – racers. The inherent need of some human beings to willingly push themselves to extreme limits has never ceased to amaze me, but thanks to these individuals, magazines like ours will never run out of exciting topics to write about. The results of the race were as follows: Winners: Female 1. Carolina Juri [Colombia] – 01:11:57 2. Charlotte Mathers [Germany] – 01:12:17 3. Jody Schostakowski [Australia] – 01:19:41 Male: 1. Hallvard Borsheim [Norway] – 00:51:29 2. Ruan Ferreira [Russia] – 00:52:31 3. Rob Jones [Great Britain] – 00:58:47

STYE

A

lso known as a hordeolum, a stye is a small, painful lump that forms on the inside or outside of the eyelid. It is actually an abscess filled with pus and is usually caused by a staphylococcus bacterial eye infection. Viruses can also cause this. Styes are common and most people get one or two of them at some stage. Styes are usually visible on the surface but can appear deeper inside the eyelid. TYPES OF STYE

There are two main types of stye: external and internal. An external stye starts as a small spot next to an eyelash. It turns into a red, painful swelling that usually lasts several days before it bursts and then heals. Most external styes are short-lived and self-limiting. An internal stye occurs on the underside of the lid. It also causes a red, painful swelling, but its location prevents the familiar whitehead from appearing on the eyelid. The internal stye may disappear completely once the infection is past, or it may leave a small fluid-filled cyst or nodule that can persist and may have to be opened and drained. 22

The Source

Styes are confused with another common lump found on eyelids. This is the chalazion. A chalazion is not an infection and in fact, is very different from a stye. It is instead a firm, round, smooth, painless bump that often occurs some distance from the edge of the lid. It is a local tissue reaction to oily glandular secretions that were unable to reach the lid surface because the duct was blocked by debris. Styes and chalazia are usually harmless and rarely affect your eyeball or your eyesight. They can occur at any age and tend to periodically recur. HOW TO TELL THEM APART? The symptoms of styes and chalazia are different. • Styes: a red, hot, tender swelling near the edge of the eyelid. • Chalazion: a painless, smooth, round bump, typically situated in the midportion of the eyelid. CAUSES OF STYES Styes are usually caused by staphylococcal bacteria, which often live on the surface of the skin. In certain conditions, the bacteria consume dead cells and other debris on our skin and a local infection ensues. This forms a tender pimple. A chalazion is caused by the blockage of tiny eyelid gland ducts that normally transport an oily substance that helps lubricate the eye. This oily material enters the tear film to prevent the evaporation of tears. Trapped or misplaced oil stimulates the immune system

to clean up the mess. Chalazia usually take from weeks to months to develop. PREVENTING STYES: Recurring styes indicate the need for better eyelid hygiene. That means regular lid scrubs to remove excess germs and cellular debris. Put a few drops of mild baby shampoo into a teacup of warm water and stir. Using a cotton wool ball, gently brush the soapy solution along the base of your eyelashes while keeping your lids closed. If you don’t have time to mix up baby shampoo, scrub your closed lids with a soapy towel in the shower. It is the mechanical rubbing that keeps the lids clear of cellular debris. It is always important that you avoid contact of the eyelid with cosmetics, dirty towels or contaminated hands. Many people with styes experience pinpoint tenderness involving a few eyelashes as an early warning. Frequent application of warm compresses at the first sign of an infection will speed resolution and help prevent further blockage of the lid glands. WHEN SHOULD DOCTOR? • • • •

Beat the heat

W

e’ve reached that time of the year again - hello heat. With our temperatures beginning to crawl into the low 40’s, I know that I am not the only one trying to figure out ways to, once again, beat the heat. While we all know that it really isn’t possible to escape, we can find relief if we plan our days properly. Below, I’ve listed some pretty awesome activities that can be fun for the entire family. 1. GO FOR A SWIM. Low 40’s is actually a bit mild when considering that we will easily see temperatures in the mid to high 40’s by July. So why not take advantage of this not so scorching heat by enjoying some water fun? Here in Al Ain we do not have to want for pools; we have several beautiful venues

26

to choose from. A refreshing dip in a pool can cool you down instantly and entertain your children for hours. Just don’t forget the sunblock lotion.

2. HAVE A WATER FIGHT. Not members of a gym or just don’t feel like leaving your house? Have a water fight in the comfort of your own front or backyard/street. If you aren’t to keen on using actual water guns, I’ve seen several cute animal shaped water shooters. Just be sure to set some ground rules before hand, like no squirting in the face. 3. VISIT A LOCAL MUSEUM. Al Ain National Museum is enclosed, has cool artifacts, and is not too pricey. Adults’ entry fees are 3 AED and children under 10 are 1 AED. Why not escape the heat and learn while doing so? 4. GO TO A LIBRARY. There are three libraries here that I am aware of: Shiekh Zayed Library, a children’s library at UAEU Women’s campus, and a library in Al Ain Mall right above the Mega Mart. Go for a

reading session there or check out a book or two for a read back home. 5. GET CRAFTY. Children and adults alike enjoy a fun craft activity. There are several recipes online for creating things like play dough and non-toxic paints. There are also websites that suggest really cool activities. My children and I recently created marbled paper eggs with shaving cream, paint, wax paper, and craft sticks. It was pretty painless unless I’m honest about the amount of times that I had to stop my 2 year old from eating the shaving cream. 6. GO TO A MALL. We have so many. Who can get bored? There are things there for everyone; play areas for children, shopping for parents, and restaurants that appeal to most. 7. CHECK OUT A MOVIE. Who doesn’t enjoy popcorn, soda, nachos, and candy? Oh yeah, and a good flick? Family movies are common features and movie dates are always fun. Let’s try to stay cool Al Ain.

FORGET OIL We are running out of fresh water!

T

he majority of the 9 billion people on Earth will live with severe pressure on fresh water within the space of two generations as climate change, pollution and over-use of resources take their toll, scientists have warned.

The world’s water systems would soon reach a tipping point that “could trigger irreversible change with potentially catastrophic consequences”, water experts warned as they called on governments to start conserving the vital resource. They said it was wrong to see fresh water as an endlessly renewable resource because, in many cases, people are pumping out water from underground sources at such a rate that it will not be restored within several lifetimes. These are self-inflicted wounds and tipping points in the system have been identified. Already, there are 1 billion people relying on ground water supplies that are simply not there as renewable water supplies. A majority of the population – about 4.5 billion people globally – already live within 50km of an “impaired” water resource – one that is running dry, or polluted. If these trends continue, millions more will see the water on which they depend running out or so filthy that it no longer supports life. The threats are numerous. Climate change is likely to cause an increase in the frequency and severity of droughts, floods, heat waves and storms. The run-off from agricultural

fertilisers containing nitrogen has already created more than 200 large “dead zones” in seas, near to river mouths, where fish can no longer live. Cheap technology to pump water from underground and rivers, and few restrictions on its use, has led to the over-use of scarce resources for irrigation or industrial purposes, with much of the water wasted because of poor techniques. And a rapidly rising population has increased demand beyond the capability of some water resources. In some areas, so much water has been pumped out from underground that salt water has rushed in to fill the gap, forcing farmers to move to other areas because the salination makes their former water sources unusable. Most of the areas where water will be scarcest soonest are in poor countries, which have little resilience to cope. Many are also in areas where there is already political instability, tension or outright conflict, and

Woman takes water from a well before returning to her village in Ethiopia. The water is purified with tablets before drinking the competition for water resources will heighten these problems. But the scientists warned that the developed world would also suffer. For instance, there are now 210 million citizens of the US living within 10 miles of an “impaired” water source, and that number is likely to rise as the effects of global warming take hold. In Europe, some water sources are running dry because of over-extraction for irrigation, much of which is carried on in an unsustainable fashion. Pollutants are also causing severe problems in the rich world – the scientists highlighted the role of endocrine disruptors, which can cause fish to change gender, and the longterm effects of which on human populations are as yet barely known. There is no citizen of the world who can be complacent about this.

Al Ain Students Swim for Glory By: Martha Hunt

On Monday, April 20th, the second Al Ain schools’ Swimming Gala of the academic year was held at Brighton College Al Ain, with the hosts, Al Ain English Speaking School and Al Ain International School all participating. Over 75 students from ages 11-15 took part in the Gala, cheered on by a number of supportive parents, friends and teachers. The level of sportsmanship was extraordinary, with students supporting their fellow swimmers regardless of school or age and congratulating everyone after the race. The standard of swimming across all the schools was remarkably high, with some races having less than a second between the first two finishers! After two hours of highly competitive swimming, the gala finished with Brighton College as the overall winners. This did not matter at all to the swimmers, who were all rightly proud of their admirable efforts in the pool that afternoon. Many swimmers from younger years should be commended for taking part in races designed for older students. In fact, many participants climbed out of the pool and immediately got back

on the diving boards to start their next race! “I think the nicest thing about the whole event was the extraordinary level of support received by all athletes, regardless of which school they attended”, said one Brighton College pupil. “Whenever someone was struggling to finish a race, everyone would cheer them on until they finished. The races were a bit longer than the last gala, so I think everyone did really well to finish with such good times.” An incredible amount of preparation went into the event courtesy of the hard working staff involved, especially those of the Brighton College PE Department, who ensured that all ran smoothly. Of course, it was the pupils who were the stars of the show and within minutes of the gala finishing, there was already excited chatter about future swimming events. Naturally, all of the swimmers who took part are eagerly anticipating the announcement of the next gala’s date so they can begin their training and attempt to smash previous personal records. Congratulations to all the students who took part!

Covert Pepper Grinder Shuts Down Electronics During Dinner Time Dolmio has launched a new campaign to reclaim family dinnertime from technology, with help from agencies Clemenger BBDO Sydney, Pollen, Starcom and Ogilvy PR. They developed a Pepper Hacker that lets parents turn off Wi-Fi and mobile apps simply by cracking pepper with one twist. The Dolmio Pepper Hacker was launched in Australia, where research has found that the average household owns around twelve devices or gadgets. It is becoming more difficult to connect with family members during mealtimes due to the distraction of technology. 69 percent of Australian households say they have witnessed an argument (which there are plenty of in video below) as a result of technology being used at the dinner table, with TVs and smartphones/tablets cited as the top sources of distraction. As well as adding seasoning to a dish, one twist of the Dolmio Pepper Hacker powers down TVs, shuts off Wi-Fi and closes mobile apps, taking away dinnertime distractions. The grinder sprinkles pepper and provides thirty minutes of tech-free, uninterrupted family time.

To demonstrate how families connect with each other when they disconnect from their devices, Dolmio provided some frustrated Australian mums with a Pepper Hacker to help them reclaim dinnertime. Richard Stear, Marketing Director at Mars Food Australia, said: We believe that meals shared with family and friends are often distracted by the very technology that is supposed to bring us closer together, so we’ve created the Dolmio

Pepper Hacker to help connect us with the people in front of us. The Dolmio Pepper Hacker might not be available to every household yet but we believe that our experiment perfectly shows that once you disconnect from your technology at the dinner table you can really connect as a family.

Forget the 3D Printer: 4D Printing Could Change Everything

Chinese My Idol iPhone App Turns Selfies into 3D Models

Ever heard of a 4D printed automatic valve that can change shape according to surrounding needs? Well, scientists have already developed one. As 3D printing gets increasingly popular, scientists have moved on to 4D printing that takes 3D printing to an entirely new level!

If you look at the most popular iPhone apps you’ll notice a new Chinese iPhone app at the top of the charts. The Xiao Ou Wo De3d Meng Ou app by Huanshi lets you turn a selfie into a 3D model or avatar that you can customize and place in new clothes, new poses and even on a fancy motorcycle. After you install the app on your phone the name changes to My Idol, but if you search the app store you will not find that app.

Researchers have started to develop 3D printed materials that morph into new structures, post production, under the influence of external stimuli such as water or heat - hence the name, 4D printing. In the 4D printing, a structure is built up layer by layer into the desired shape - much as in 3D printing - but these new materials are able to transform themselves from one shape into another, much like a child’s Transformer toy.

The catch is that the app is in Chinese so you’ll need a guide to use the Xiao Ou Wo De3d Meng Ou app unless you can read Chinese.

This ground-breaking science promises advancement in myriad fields such as medicine, construction, automation and robotics, the researchers said.

“You can quickly start a video call from any conversation with just one tap,” Facebook said in a statement. “If you’re messaging with someone and realize that words just aren’t enough, you can simply choose the video icon in the top right corner of the screen and start a video call right from within an existing Messenger conversation.” Similar services are offered by Microsoft’s Skype, Google Hangouts and Apple’s FaceTime.Facebook last year broke off Messenger from the main Facebook application for mobile users, creating a separate platform which now has some 600 million users. The world’s biggest social network also opened up Messenger to outside developers as part of its strategy to create a “family” of apps that also includes Instagram and WhatsApp. Free calling has been available for two years to users of Messenger, although people may be required to pay for data used during the connections. Why Fall In Love With

VIETNAM?

V

ietnam should be on the top of everyone’s travel list. It’s that simple. With its dramatic landscapes, fascinating history, epic food and pulsating energy, Vietnam will electrify all of your senses and seize you from all angles. Vietnam is at once crazy and serene, thrilling and relaxing.

There are endless reasons to hop on a flight to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City and travel down or up this amazing country by train, plane, bus or -- the preferred method of transport -motorbike. If you need persuading, here are some reasons to fall head over heels in love with Vietnam:

HALONG BAY

Once upon a time, a friendly dragon lived in the heavens above Halong Bay. With invaders from the seas threatening Vietnam, the gods asked the dragon to create a natural barrier to protect its people. The dragon kindly obliged, performing a spectacular crash landing along the coast – digging up chunks of rock with its flailing tail and spitting out pearls – before grinding to a halt. This scene of devastation is now known as Halong Bay – Halong literally translates as ‘where the dragon descends into the sea’. 34

The Source

Less exciting explanations of this landscape involve eons of erosion by winds and waves – but nobody disputes the splendour of the end result. Rising from the shallows of the Gulf of Tonkin are thousands of limestone islands – towering monoliths lined up like dominoes, some teetering at worrying angles. Having largely resisted human settlement, the islands have become home to a myriad of creatures.

CAVES

Mammoth caves that hold entire jungles and lakes are still being discovered in Vietnam. Son Doong Cave, the biggest cave in the world, was only first explored in 2009, and didn’t open to tourists until 2012. Trips into Son Doong are still highly controlled, expensive and limited, but there’s a vast network of caves that are much more accessible. Paradise Cave in Phong Nha-

Ke Bàng National Park is 19 miles across and offers a variety of tours into its interior, including an easy walk on the boardwalk at the beginning of the cave and a trek past the boardwalk for the more adventurous.

HISTORY

Vietnam’s history is tumultuous and complex, the country having been occupied and divided by various countries for decades. Colonial influences are visible everywhere, from the architecture to the food and the coffee. The aftermath of the Vietnam War is apparent too -- in the museums and monuments but also in the faces and stories of survivors and the overwhelmingly young population. Interwoven with our own history, Vietnam’s past is not only fascinating, it’s also important to learn about.

SAPA

Sapa, a hill station in the Northwest of Vietnam, is one of the country’s most stunning areas. Its dramatic rice terraces and surrounding peaks make this mountainous area well worth the short trip from Hanoi. You can take an overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa, which makes it a popular destination on the tourist circuit.

BEACHES

Vietnam’s beaches may be one of the country’s most unsung beauties. While travelers may think of Thailand and Cambodia as the countries to visit for white

FRESH SEAFOOD

sand and clear water, Vietnam boasts beaches that rival these countries’ beloved tourists spots. Sure, some beach towns in Vietnam, like Nha Trang and Mui Ne, get a lot of attention, but quieter, less-traveled beaches like Doc Let are the real treasures. Con Dao and Phu Quoc are some of the most gorgeous islands in South East Asia, and travelers would be wise to hurry there now, before these isolated, idyllic spots suffer the same fate as the over-traveled beaches in Thailand and Cambodia.

MEKONG DELTA

The Mekong Delta is an area in Southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River dumps into the sea. Visitors can go to Can Tho,

the largest city in the area, and get a real taste of rural life in this region affectionately known as the “rice bowl.” Traveling up the backwaters, visitors will be wowed by the floating markets and above all else, the friendly people who live in the region.

COFFEE

One of the most extraordinary things about the markets in Vietnam is that the food doesn’t smell at all. You’ll walk into the food section and see freshly caught fish, snails, crabs and prawns and brace yourself for a fishy smell. But because the fish you see in the market was caught just a few hours ago, you won’t smell a thing. We swear.

PEOPLE

Kind, thoughtful, industrious, optimistic, generous -- the people are the heart of the country, and if you visit, you should take every opportunity to get to know them.

As the second biggest producer of coffee in the world, Vietnam knows a thing or two about coffee. Most importantly, coffee comes with sweetened condensed milk (a.k.a. the best stuff on Earth) pretty much without exception. It’s also an integral part of the culture, served in cafes and... drum roll... on the street, of course. The Source

THE ESCAPE By David Baldacci

It’s a prison unlike any other. Military discipline rules. Its security systems are unmatched. None of its prisoners dream of escaping. They know it’s impossible. Until now. John Puller’s older brother, Robert, was convicted of treason and national security crimes. His inexplicable escape from prison makes him the most wanted criminal in the country. Some in the government believe that John Puller represents their best chance of capturing Robert alive, and so Puller takes on the burden of bringing his brother in to face justice.

THE WHITE HORSE OF ZENNER AND OTHER STORIES

-

BY Michael Morpurgo

At the furthest edge of Britain, where the sea gently washes over the land and myths brush against reality, lies Zennor. Since the beginning of time strange and mysterious things have happened there, and these stories highlight all the most haunting and enchanting events. Once a year, on a misty autumn night, there is a pounding of hoof beats as a great white horse comes thundering over the moor in the moonlight.
