ife is full of challenges, obstacles and yes, disappointments. The truth is simply that life is not easy and we can either understand this reality and accept it or spend a lifetime hiding from, evading or even sedating ourselves as a means of escape. I have pretty much tried all of the afore mentioned quick fix approaches to problem solving and am at a point in my life where accepting and dealing with problems head on has finally become, not only a wise solution, but the only one that will bring about a happy ending. Throughout our lives we are faced with seemingly endless disappointment, whether someone you trusted and loved let you down or something at your work didn’t go right or whether your life isn’t where you want it to be – life just seems to have a way of kicking us when we’re already down.

Disappointment is not an easy thing to face, but standing strong in the face of disappointment and picking yourself up afterwards is crucial to living a good life. One of my ongoing struggles and personal problems has been that proverbial quest for more money. Now there are definitely many among us who are decidedly poor and their struggles are stories in and of themselves, but there are also a great many of us who have enough but seem unable to accurately assess the meaning of enough. If you too have a problem defining enough, then I offer this tiny bit of wisdom: place your focus on a problem that needs to be solved for the betterment of mankind and I promise money will subsequently be the reward for your empathetic effort! In the mean time, enjoy this issue of The Source, especially our teachers feature and I hope it helps bring a little more happiness into your homes!

Montana man “likes” his own wanted poster...yup, gets arrested Hey, maybe he just really liked his mug shot. A Montana man was arrested Friday after he “liked” his mug shot on the Cascade County Crime Stoppers’ Facebook page. Although Levi Charles Reardon has apparently since revoked his “like” on the post, the Great Falls Tribune managed to capture proof of the baffling event. According to the Tribune, Reardon, 23, was featured as one of Cascade County’s most wanted suspects for April and had two warrants against him.

Drinker fell off 12ft wall and carried on SNORING all the way through dramatic rescue A 20-stone drinker was rescued after falling off a 12ft wall - but slept through the entire 30 minute operation by fire crews. The 6ft man, in his mid 30s, was totally oblivious to his ordeal. He was even heard snoring as he was lifted up on a board and taken to hospital for a check-up. The punter was discovered outside the Dusty Miller boozer in Huddersfield, West Yorks, just after midnight on Saturday. Miraculously he escaped without any injury. Firefighter Shane Byrne said: “It was amazing, he didn’t open his eyes the whole time and just carried on snoring during the rescue which took around half an hour.

He’s reportedly been accused of felony forgery, and court records show he allegedly stole a wallet and personal checks in January before fraudulently cashing four of the checks. He made an initial court appearance.

“A male passer by raised the alarm and when we got there we had to cut down a number of trees and force a really old iron gate open. “Eventually we managed to extricate him and place him on a board so an ambulance could take him to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for a check up. “I don’t think he had suffered any injury.”

Fugitive Arrested 56 Years After Escape

A fugitive who spent time at the penitentiary featured in prison-escape film The Shawshank Redemption was finally apprehended in Florida after 56 years on the lam. Authorities arrested 79-yearold Frank Freshwaters, who also used the name William Cox, on Tuesday after receiving a tip from U.S. Marshals that he was living in Melbourne, Fla. “We approached him, showed him the 1959 picture, asked if he’d seen that person. He said he hadn’t seen him in a long time,” Major Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said of the confrontation at Freshwaters’ isolated mobile home. Freshwaters went by aliases since escaping in 1959, but authorities said he had a Florida driver’s license, stayed out of trouble and was even collecting Social Security.

ASK THE DR

Dear Dr. Gabe, I have been told that there are certain natural remedies for treating toe nail fungus that are less invasive than pharmaceutical therapies. Can you recommend any and are they as effective as the pharmaceuticals? Dear Reader, Thanks for the question. Fungal and mold infections account for about half of all disfigured / discolored nails, according to some studies. While there are many natural treatments for nail fungus, there are very few studies to confirm and quantify their efficacy. The good news is that natural remedies are often low cost and low risk and so giving them a try is not hard. Sometimes nail discoloration or disfigurement is not fungal and can be a sign of serious illness. It is always wise to see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment options. Be well, Dr. Gabe The doctor is always on call at The Source and asking the right questions can lead to better health. Dr. Gabriel comes to us from Oasis Hospital, where he practices family medicine. Al Ain house fire kills 3 Emirati children

Three Emirati children died on Saturday, May 9, as a result of a fire in their home in Al Ain. The mother has also been seriously injured. Mubarak Al Shamsi, their uncle said, “the fire began escalating at 1am from one of the upstairs rooms,” adding that he rushed to go to the rooms on the second floor to warn the family. When he reached his brother’s wife’s room, where she was sleeping with her four children, he tried to open the door, but it was locked. “I called one of my brothers to help me break down the door and we succeeded, but we could not enter the room because of the density of the smoke”. “I called the civil defense and took a water pipe to extinguish the fire,” he added. “Upon the arrival of the fire engines, they managed to rescue one child - Rodah, six10

WHICH WAY FORWARD?

W

hen I was a boy, I spent a lot of time on farms. Not our own, as my father was a lawyer, but on other people’s, those of his clients or friends.

Often, the land was degraded. Erosion had gouged gullies in treeless hillsides, evoking open wounds. In places, channels had been carved three meters deep. Cattle driven mad with thirst would brave the climb down and never make it out. It didn’t rain much, but when it did the energy would be lost to the system. Water flooded through the landscape, not over it, carrying off hundreds of square kilometers of topsoil. The wealth of the country disappeared down snaky brown torrents to stain the sea, triggering algal blooms the size of emirates. In a few places, national parks and the like, the land was still forested. Thick with soaring eucalypts, matted with grasses and ferns, the creeks tinkled and the leaf-litter teemed with life. These were places of peace and joy, and fertility. What happened, I wondered. How had the garden become the desert? I swore that as soon as I was old enough I would buy up as much land as I could and restore it to its natural condition. I’d tear down the fences, banish the cattle and sheep and re-establish biodiversity, creating a haven for myself in the process. Well, as you might guess, I haven’t applied

any great energy to the pursuit of that dream. Living the modern lifestyle, bunkered within my aircon cushion, the dream remains but that. Have I betrayed it? Not exactly - but I’m little nearer to realizing it than the day I made the pledge. Fortunately, others have not been so timid. Doug Tompkins and Yvon Chouinard, two Californian climbers and surfers, journeyed to Patagonia back in 1968. They didn’t fly. Committed to experiencing the country climbing the peaks and surfing the waves along the way - they drove.

Yvon Chouinard

The track south emptied into a people-less wilderness the size of the American West. For both these energetic boys the natural world had been a playground, but this odyssey gave rise to a new kind of relationship with the land. In 180 Degrees South an adventurer named Jeff Johnson travels in Yvon and Doug’s footsteps, sailing rather than driving, but in the same spirit. Interwoven with Jeff’s narrative is a second story describing the work that Yvon, Doug and Doug’s wife, Kristine, are doing in Chile with their project, Conservacion Patagonica. With 2 million acres under protection, they are restoring the landscape - protecting ecosystems, developing sustainable farming practices, preserving biodiversity and removing fences so wild animals may roam their ranges unrestricted. The project has its critics, but as Doug says, “The risk of something negative coming from this seems to be rather small.” Well said. For those who don’t know, Yvon and Doug founded Patagonia, the outdoor clothing and equipment company committed to

Doug Tompkins environmentally-friendly commercial activity - and is achieving it, unlike one notable fruit seller I might mention. Doug also founded The North Face and Esprit. Kristine was CEO of Patagonia for ages. Critics of environmentalism argue that you can’t go back. But Doug asks what happens if at the edge of a cliff you make a 180 degree turn and take one step forward. Which way are you going then? Which way is progress? This film moved me. At the core of the connection, I think, was the knowledge that others share my dreams. Doug and Yvon are realizing theirs, as is Jeff. And one day I’ll be among them, I swear it.

urban woman

Are women in the UAE better drivers than men? In an article published in the Gulf Today, entitled “Women commit fewer accidents: Police” (Feb. 12, 2014), experts indicate that women have caused fewer accidents than men on the road. The statistics, according to Dubai police reports, reveal that in the year 2013, “men have caused 1,381 accidents which resulted in 117 deaths, on the other hand, women have caused 144 accidents and 5 deaths.” They conclude with a bold statement: women are better drivers than men.

Driving is a critical issue, where men and women have been having an ongoing debate for years now and where both state that one gender is better than the other. This ongoing debate has affected the status of women in many countries about driving. Accidents can have many causes but the main ones are texting while driving and over-speeding. Both genders should not be committing such acts on the road; however, both have done so, despite both genders performing many of these maneuvers. The University of Hertfordshire, conducted a study on 50 female and male students regarding time management. The results show that women can multitask effectively while the men struggled to do so. This highlights an aspect that women can preform numerous tasks at hand, which can be a key factor in explaining why women cause fewer accidents on the road. An Emirati filmmaker, Amal Al-Agroobi has been driving for over 10 years and has only been in one car accident in her time as a driver. Her opinion is that, “men, by nature are arrogant and they always have the need to prove themselves amongst other men. These habits are also seen on the road.” An American University of Sharjah alumnus, Fares Adi, stated, “There are bad drivers and good drivers for both genders. There are accidents that happen from both sides. However, women may be classified as better drivers, due to the fact that they follow the rules on the road in a more consistent way than men do.” While women have proved to be better at driving, many women are still involved in accidents and may also drive aggressively at times. According to the Reader’s Digest, (2014), “today, more women drive (and drive more) than ever before, which has the unfortunate consequence of an increase in speeding, aggressive driving, and even fatal crashes among women.” To lessen the amounts of accidents on the road, both genders should not over-speed, text while driving or perform other actions that could cause accidents. In addition, there should be more awareness campaigns about the dangers of driving and in specific, show the number of deaths that have occurred due to car accidents in the country. Great Britain was exemplary in its actions to combat bad driving by launching public service announcements on television with gruesome and graphic videos of children being hit by speeding vehicles. They would then slow these down so viewers heard the noises of bones snapping and skin ripping. This left very shocking images in the memories of many drivers and as a result, the UK has reported a decrease by 2000 casualties in one year alone. Learn from the strengths of both sexes; drive confidently and carefully and don’t forget to wear your seat belt! 14

ANGER

MANAGEMENT TIPS

D

o you fume when someone cuts you off in traffic? Does your blood pressure rocket when your child refuses to cooperate? Anger is a normal and even healthy emotion — but it’s important to deal with it in a positive way. Uncontrolled anger can take a toll on both your health and your relationships.

Ready to get your anger under control? Start by considering these 10 anger management tips. 1. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say something you’ll later regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything — and allow others involved in the situation to do the same. 2. ONCE YOU’RE CALM, EXPRESS YOUR ANGER As soon as you’re thinking clearly, express your frustration in an assertive but nonconfrontational way. State your concerns and needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them. 3. GET SOME EXERCISE Physical activity can help reduce stress that can cause you to become angry. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run, or spend some time doing other enjoyable physical activities.

16

The Source

4. TAKE A TIMEOUT

6. STICK WITH ‘I’ STATEMENTS

Timeouts aren’t just for kids. Give yourself short breaks during times of the day that tend to be stressful. A few moments of quiet time might help you feel better prepared to handle what’s ahead without getting irritated or angry.

To avoid criticizing or placing blame — which might only increase tension — use “I” statements to describe the problem. Be respectful and specific. For example, say, “I’m upset that you left the table without offering to help with the dishes,” instead of, “You never do any housework.”

5. IDENTIFY POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Does your child’s messy room drive you crazy? Close the door. Is your partner late for dinner every night? Schedule meals later in the evening — or agree to eat on your own a few times a week. Remind yourself that anger won’t fix anything and might only make it worse.

7. DON’T HOLD A GRUDGE Forgiveness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and other negative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense of injustice. But if you can forgive someone who angered you, you might both learn from the situation. It’s unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you want at all times. 8. USE HUMOR TO RELEASE TENSION Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Use humor to help you face what’s making you angry and, possibly, any unrealistic expectations you have for how things should go. Avoid sarcasm, though — it can hurt feelings and make things worse. 9. PRACTICE RELAXATION SKILLS When your temper flares, put relaxation skills to work. Practice deep-breathing exercises, imagine a relaxing scene, or repeat a calming word or phrase, such as, “Take it easy.” You might also listen to music, write in a journal or do a few yoga poses — whatever it takes to encourage relaxation. 10. KNOW WHEN TO SEEK HELP Learning to control anger is a challenge for everyone at times. Consider seeking help for anger issues if your anger seems out of control, causes you to do things you regret or hurts those around you.

KEEN on CLEAN with

Mahmoud Mawed at MBM-Dallah By: Farid Nouisser

In this issue of The Source, we focus on a vital service that is rarely given the credit it

deserves and yet, without the efforts of this industry, our beautiful city and indeed, the entire world would be a very sorry sight - not to mention practically uninhabitable.

Yes my friends, the sustainable beauty of our urban centers, in many ways, hinges

on effective waste management, so The Source accepted an invitation to meet with Mahmoud Mohammed Mawed, G.M. of MBM – Dallah to learn a little about the responsibilities of one of our most essential services. 18

The Source

al majlis Considering the magnitude of the company, I must admit that I was surprised to see such a young man in the position of G.M. but after meeting Mr. Mawed, I was quickly impressed by both his achievements and ability to lead the organization. At the age of 30, his achievements include: a degree in mechanical engineering, a masters of science in facilities management with distinction, Thesis: “The Impacts of Sustainable Practices on the Buildings Life Cycle Cost” – Heriot-Watt University; currently completing a PHD at Heriot – Watt University in Built Environment; one of only two qualified in the UAE for IFMA (International Facilities Management Training) course training; he is a Facilities Management Principles lecturer at Heriot-Watt University and a Pearl Qualified Professional (PQP). How did a man of your age manage to achieve so much? I have always been a great believer in discipline and organization and with these things at the forefront of one’s work ethic, everything is possible. What are the origins of MBM – Dallah? MBM – Dallah was founded in 2005 as a result of a fruitful collaboration between Dallah Group – Saudi and MBM, a subsidiary of the UAE based ETA – Ascon Group. We have also established an international collaboration with one of the largest European experts, URBASER from Spain. What is your company’s objective and mission? We strive to lead the development of modern waste management while creating a sustainable environment solution. Can you describe the current magnitude of your infrastructure? We are currently operating, thanks to and under the directive of The Center of Waste Management – Tadweer, in a binding contract worth .5 Billion Dirhams, with a workforce of 1,100 employees in Al Ain and more than 150 trucks. We are responsible for the waste collection of 7,000 square kilometers and collect on average, approximately 1,000 tons per day. The collection service includes following types of waste: • • • • • • • • •

Household Waste Bulky Waste Commercial Waste Institutional Waste Market Waste Green Waste Construction & demolition Slaughterhouse Waste Fallen Stock

the

• • • • • • • • • • •

Paper containing Islamic Scriptures Litter in public areas. The Street sweeping and cleaning services include the following: Street sweeping (mechanical & manual) Cleaning sidewalks & pavements around buildings. Maintaining public waste baskets & bins. Cleaning of markets. Cleaning parks (e.g. Mubazzarah). Cleaning and maintaining public washrooms at markets & public areas. Cleaning & washing bus stops and pedestrian underpasses, signboards and green fence. Cleaning and washing of bin points.

What are some of the highly specialized services you provide? Currently, we are operating a state of the art clinical waste incinerator plant as well as a fallen stock incinerator plant in Al Ain City. We are also operating a Crushing plant that has been built with the vision of transforming and segregating C&D waste into ballasts & filling materials for the conservation of natural resources & fulfilling the rising demand of building & road construction material. On top of this, we operate a highly sophisticated sanitary

landfill site with a geotextile membrane laid inside the leachate collection system for ground water protection. The sanitary landfill has four cells for municipal solid waste and one for hazardous waste, which is reserved only for the fly ashes from the clinical waste incinerator. This landfill has the capacity of around 3.8 million cubic meters which is sufficient for an estimated period of 20 years. How important is community engagement with your industry? This is very important indeed, and at MBM – Dallah, we are committed in bringing about a community attitude change and believe we have a social responsibility as a company to work closely with, and educate the community in responsible and sustainable environmental behaviour. We achieve this by working with educational institutions, Mall awareness programs, employee blood donor clinics, door to door awareness, tree planting programs, Earth Hour participation and naturally, any media awareness coverage we can achieve with publications such as yours. Finally, what advice can you give the public in regards to achieving an environmentally sustainable future? On a very light and personal note, I can advise people to enjoy life by both working and playing hard without creating too much garbage and on a more serious note, remember the cardinal rule that drives our industry and the very future of our planet; REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE! BLEPHARITIS

Dr. Nadia Hussain

MBBS, MSc Str.M.Bio (UK), PhD (c)

Dr. Nadia is a physician pursuing her PhD in Physiology from UAE University. She is the Chief Editor for Capsule (UAEU), author of Fragments of my Time (Minwa Press) and an award winning poet.

lepharitis is a term used for recurring inflammation of the eyelids. It causes the eyes to feel sore and gritty. It is usually a long term issue that affects both eyes.

• • •

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? • The main symptom is sore eyelids. Both eyes are usually affected. • The eyes may feel gritty, itchy or as though they are burning. The eyelids may look inflamed or greasy. The eyes may become sticky with discharge. In particular, the eyelids may stick together in the morning. Sometimes tiny flakes or scales appear on the eyelids, which look like small flakes of dandruff. Crusts may develop at the base of eyelashes. One or more of the tiny glands of the eyelids may block and fill with an oily fluid.

Typically, symptoms flare up from time to time, but you may have long periods without any symptoms. In most cases, blepharitis is uncomfortable but not serious or sightthreatening. Complications are uncommon but include formation of cysts and styes, irritation with contact lens use, eyelash loss and even eyelid ulcerations in extreme cases. There is no one time complete cure for blepharitis which means the inflammation requires keeping up with treatment to avoid flare ups. The aim of treatment is to control or manage blepharitis, not to cure it. Most of the treatment is done by you and the most important is eye hygiene. Other treatments that can be prescribed by your eye health care professional include antibiotics, artificial tear drops and specific treatment for associated conditions.

Regular eyelid hygiene soothes the eyelids, unplugs any blocked glands and clears out any stagnant oily secretions from these glands. The eyelids are cleaned and debris is removed. This is a daily routine that consists of three parts - warmth, massage and cleansing. Warm the skin by using a small towel soaked in very warm water or a reusable heat bag for your eyelids (check temperature first) and apply for a few minutes. This softens the skin and loosens any crusts formed. The oils in the glands flow more freely and unplug the glands as they do. Five to ten minutes is enough time to apply warmth. Then massage your lids to help push out the oily fluid from the tiny glands. Massage along the length of the upper and lower eyelids towards the eye. That is, sweeping downwards when moving along the upper eyelid, and upwards when moving along the lower eyelid. The idea is that you are moving the oily secretions toward the edge of the eyelid so that they can emerge from the glands. Repeat this massage action 5 to 10 times over about 30 seconds. You should not press too hard or be too gentle. Then clean the eyelids using a cotton wool bud that has been dipped in diluted baby shampoo. Just add a few drops

of baby shampoo to a small cup of warm water so that the ratio of water to shampoo is about 10:1. Squeeze out excess liquid from the cotton bud to prevent drips getting into your eyes, which may irritate. Clean off any crusts at the base of the eyelids. After cleaning the eyelids with the cotton wool bud, wash the shampoo from the eyelids. This routine should be repeated at least twice a day until symptoms settle. When the symptoms have eased, continue once a day, every day, to prevent further flare-ups. If you are prone to blepharitis, it is best to think of this as part of your daily routine - just like brushing your teeth. This is the best way to keep symptoms away, or to a minimum. Consult your doctor about finding out what is causing your blepharitis and what can be done to control the main cause of the condition. EXPAT GUILT W hile living abroad offers us unique opportunities to expand our horizons and gain invaluable life experiences, it also, at times, causes us to lose or miss out on important moments that take place among the loved ones that we’re away from for a season. For the average person living abroad, births, birthdays, weddings and first steps are experiences reduced to phone conversations, Skype appointments, or Facebook tags. While those efforts are appreciated, they don’t compare at all to actually being present during the celebrations. If we’re honest, we’ll admit to a little ‘expat guilt’ from time to time for missing so many special moments. It can be tough when that guilt 26

The Source

is associated with happy moments but it can feel unbearable when dealing with difficult times, such as losing a loved one.

My grandmother passed on the UScelebrated Mother’s Day this year; I’m typing this less than 24 hours after hearing the news. I spent today regretting that I didn’t make time to see her on our last trip to the States, hating that she never met our youngest son (who actually looks a great deal like her), and wishing that I could be home with my family during this difficult time. Three days for bereavement just isn’t enough time, and AED 6,475 for a ticket home for a few days is just too much. So yes, I feel quite overwhelmed with ‘expat guilt’, wishing that I could have actually hugged my father instead of rendering kind words of encouragement across a telephone. This is the second grandparent I‘ve lost while living abroad. I’ve also lost a cousin, an uncle, and a great uncle. Each time, I cried and wished I could have been home supporting my loved ones. Funerals are the times when I feel like my family needs me

the most — and I too need them. At times like these, I wish I were home instead, and able to drive or hop on a flight that takes considerably less than 16 hours to see my family. I wish this could have been an article offering helpful tips on how to deal with missing out on both precious and life-changing occurrences in our home countries - It’s not. I wish that I had a formula to help determine whether an occasion deserves time off and ticket purchasing - I do not. At this moment, I am still trying to decide whether or not I’ll be going to my grandmother’s funeral this weekend. Regardless of not having all the answers at this point in time, I can say that ‘expat guilt,’ is a major part of living away from home and missing or not missing those precious moments should be solely based on how you feel and what works for your family. There isn’t a right or wrong way to handle special or difficult occasions back home. In the end, living abroad does cause us to miss out on a lot, but we still get to decide how much we will actually miss.

THOSE WHO CAN,

TEACH! By: JJ Green

I

’m sure most of us are familiar with that disparaging idiom, “those who can; do, and those who can’t; teach”.

As another school year begins its wind down, I thought it appropriate to shed some much needed light on the many unsung heroes that grind day in and day out to ensure that the most valuable resource we humans have does not go to waste, rather flourishes in an infinite future of possibilities – I am speaking, of course, of our young minds and the many teachers that help develop that endless potential. Now, I will admit that I was not always the most disciplined student and in fact, high school and college provided me with first and foremost, an outstanding social venue. But there were those special teachers that 28

The Source

left their mark. Naturally, I’m not referring to the ones that beat me – just kidding -, rather those that left a legacy of positive influences still guiding me to this very day! It is for this reason that I find it particularly appalling to hear some of the nasty teacher bashing that goes on from time to time. For heaven’s sake, the things I have heard people say back home about teachers on radio talk shows and on the internet are simply not true. There are far too many people who truly believe that teachers are grossly overpaid and under-worked. This is an absolutely perverse attitude when we consider that teachers are grooming the next generation of citizens; the ones who will grow up to support our golden year pensions. Maybe we’re having trouble with the big-picture. The little-picture is pretty simple: teachers are grooming our children, yours and mine. Do we really want to trust the most precious things in our lives to underpaid and overworked drones?

In Canada, my homeland, we are repeatedly battered with comparisons of teacher’s wages to the average industrial worker. You’re darn right they earn more than this sector and rightfully so, since many teachers spend four extra post secondary school years honing their skills in preparation for a career that we should all be grateful for! The average teacher has been working for 11 years. They should be making reasonably good money. They’re raising families too! Then there’s the under-worked part. That argument usually starts with July and August. Teachers get the whole summer off. No doubt about it; that’s nice. But they need the break! I know there are lazy teachers, just as there are lazy bankers, letter carriers, doctors, and yes, lazy journalists. But overwhelmingly, teachers are not lazy. What if teachers stopped participating in extracurricular activities – imagine that! School plays, sports, newspapers, chess clubs, fashion shows, music and theater

just to name a few. None of these would be possible without teachers freely donating their time. Critics are quick to count the summer against teachers, but lose sight of all those extra hours spent for the sake of our kid’s further enrichment. And then there are the critics that argue,

classes only go from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, but anyone delusional enough to believe that teachers only work a six and a half hour day, hasn’t the slightest clue about the reality of teaching hours. Preparing for class takes time. Talking to kids after school takes time. Meeting with parents takes time. Marking takes time. I can’t imagine reading through

100 essays on why insects are essential to the biodiversity of our planet and writing helpful comments in the margin. We expect teachers to deal with children from broken homes, from abusive homes, from negligent homes. We send teachers children from homes where both parents work, or where the only parent works, or where no parent works. We send teachers children who leave home without breakfast and whose grasp of mathematics is grounded in the reality that the money sometimes runs out in 2 or 3 weeks, and can’t be stretched to cover 30 or 31 days of each month. And best of all, we expect teachers to turn each of those children into productive citizens. We ask this in spite of the fact that there are often 28 or more students in the classroom, some of which are downright impossible to deal with and have parents that offer little to no support in regards to re-enforcing lessons, or by making sure homework is done, or even by insisting that the student listens to or respects the teacher. Teachers engineer and construct the very foundations of our society and without them; there would be little hope for the future! So remember, “Those who can; teach, and those who do teach, are most admirable indeed!” The Source

Kim Kardashian spends mother’s day away from home : Shares cute photo of north west and honors mom Kim Kardashian spent Mother’s Day in Brazil on business but still shared a sweet photo of her and Kanye West’s daughter, North West, who’s in great hands back home. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star had told Extra that she felt “really sad” she would spend the holiday away from the child, who is almost 2, but that her family planned to celebrate beforehand.

‘Revenge’: Jack & Emily’s Happy Ending Was Perfect Way To Wrap Series

“I feel so blessed that my daughter gets to grow up knowing my amazing beautiful grandmother,” Kim said on Instagram on Sunday, alongside a pic of North with her great-grandmother Mary Jo Shannon, aka the reality’s star’s Grandma MJ, mother of Kris Jenner. “Life is all about memories so take lots of pics and cherish all of the good memories! Happy Mothers Day,” she added.

Kim had jetted off to Brazil on Saturday. She is there on a one-day trip to promote her K Kardashian Collection.

It only took 89 episodes, but on the May 10 series finale of ‘Revenge,’ Jack and Emily finally hooked up! Not only did they have wild, passionate sex, but they got married and sailed off into the sunset together. I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to my favorite series.

Indian actor Salman Khan was convicted of culpable homicide on Wednesday and sentenced to five years in prison, almost 13 years after he killed a man sleeping on a sidewalk in Mumbai and injured four others by running them over with his SUV. Khan was found guilty on all counts, which included rash and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. “You were driving the car,” the judge told a downcast and visibly dejected Khan, according to news channel NDTV, rejecting the actor’s repeated denials over the past decade that he was behind the wheel. The Bollywood star listened to the verdict with tears in his eyes, according to the Press Trust of India, while local media reported that members of his family present in the courtroom broke down in tears. Salman Khan was granted a temporary reprieve from prison on Friday, as the Bombay High Court extended his bail and suspended his jail sentence. The Bollywood superstar’s conviction is now pending an appeal.

Acer launches Yoga-like laptop for Dh1,300. Bends backwards almost 360 degree

Windows 10 is going to be the last major version of the operating service (OS), according to a Microsoft developer. Speaking at the company’s Ignite conference this week, developer evangelist Jerry Nixon said: “Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10.” Instead of new major versions, the product will be improved in regular instalments and automatic updates, much akin to apps and modern browsers. Mr Nixon’s assertions were reiterated by a Microsoft statement which confirmed it will offer updates for the OS in an “ongoing manner” with “incremental updates”. This decision has been made as part of the company’s effort to rebrand «Windows as a service.» Microsoft launched Windows 8.1 last year while quietly developing Windows 10 in the background, a tactic that will not reoccur due to the OS’s rolling update status. Windows 10 is expected to be released later this year as a free download, with different versions for different devices, including PCs, mobiles, tablets, XBOX One and singleboard computers.

Acer has launched yet another entry point notebook but with a Lenovo Yoga-styled design. The 11-inch convertible notebook - Aspire R 11 - has a 11.6-inch HD touch display with Corning Gorilla Glass and bends backwards almost 360 degrees. What’s interesting is the pricing strategy. Acer has priced the device at $354 (Dh1,300) and packed it with some useful features. What’s on offer is a machine with Intel Pentium processor and Intel HD graphics. In its current form, a Pentium processor is a consumer-level product that Intel rates as

‘two stars’, meaning that it is above the lowend Atom and Celeron products but below the faster Core i3, i5 and i7 lines as well as the high-end Xeon processors. The device can be configured with up to 8GB of DDR3L system memory and up to 1TB hard drive (will cost extra in that configuration). It has an Acer Crystal Eye HD webcam, built-in SD Card reader, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, and full-sized HDMI and VGA ports. Aspire R 11 is supported by Acer for free Windows 10 upgrade. Acer claims the battery lasts up to 8 hours. The Source

AFRICA LIBERATION DAY (ALD) – 25 MAY

A

frica Liberation Day draws its history from the 1958 Conference of Independent States convened by Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President and Prime, in Accra. The conference was attended by eight independent African states: Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Libya Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia. The 15th of April meeting was significant in that it was the first time that African cooperation was discussed at a governmental level and the first time that African governments had collectively called for self-determination and rejection of colonialism and imperialism. The Conference declared April 15 “Africa Freedom Day” a day to “mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement, and to symbolize the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation”.

Just five years after the Accra Conference another historic meeting started on the 23rd of May 1963 in Addis Abba, Ethiopia. By this meeting thirty-one African countries had been liberated and were represented by their Heads of State or Foreign Ministers. In his welcoming address Emperor Haile Selassie stated that delegates had “

Kwame Nkrumah

Africa Liberation Day is celebrated by Africans worldwide and is a day for reflection and reaffirmation of our commitment to fight all forms of oppression and exploitation suffered by Africans. It is a day for ‘conscientising’ and organising for true liberation and unity of Africa. A day of fighting xenophobia and all measures that sow mistrust and disunity among Africans.

a duty and privilege to arouse the slumbering giant of Africa, not to the nationalism of Europe of the nineteenth century, not to regional consciousness, but to a vision of a single African brotherhood bending its united efforts towards the achievement of a greater and nobler goal”. Kwame Nkrumah, who was attending the conference in Addis Abba, told delegates that

AZAPO has and continues to celebrate Africa Liberation Day in the spirit of Black Consciousness(BC) which is grounded in the reality of South Africa but draws from the experiences of the African liberation struggle and the struggles of Black people throughout the world. It is this genealogy that gives BC a strong internationalist and Pan African orientation and sensibility. As Biko put it,

Unite we must, without necessarily sacrificing our sovereignties, big or small we can, here and now forge a political union based on defense, foreign affairs and diplomacy, a common citizenship, an African currency, an African monetary zone and an African Central Bank. We must unite in order to achieve the full liberation of our continent

…by Black Consciousness I mean the cultural and political revival of an oppressed people. This must be related to the emancipation of the entire continent of Africa since the Second World War … I feel that the Black people of the world, in choosing to reject the legacy of colonialism and white domination and to build around themselves their own values, standards and outlook to life, have at last established a solid base for meaningful cooperation amongst themselves in the larger battle of the Third World against the rich nations

On the 25th of May 1963, thirty-one African Heads of State and foreign ministers founded the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and renamed African Freedom Day “African Liberation Day” and changed its date to May 25.

Happy ALD and forward to a prosperous and united Africa!! The Source

The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes

I

n 1912, the largest volcanic eruption of the century blasted away for three days in a remote patch of southwest Alaska. The eruption blackened the skies over Kodiak, nearly 100 miles away, and covered the village in a quilt of ash two feet deep. Residents in Juneau, 750 miles away, heard the explosion an hour after it blasted. The eruption eventually tarnished brass in California and Colorado, and lowered the earth’s average temperature that year by two degrees Fahrenheit. Although the eruption was a century ago, one of its more visually astounding effects remains. In the middle of Katmai National Park and Preserve, a 6395-sq-mile swatch of wilderness known mainly for its bear watching and salmon fishing, a wide, ashcovered valley is surrounded by steaming, snow-covered volcanic mountains and marked by a surprisingly small, yet severalstory-high black mound. This mound is Novarupta (which means “new eruption”), a 34

The Source

volcanic vent and the source of the massive 1912 eruption. Intrepid hikers can explore the valley, while those less keen on the often-harsh conditions can enjoy the views from the Griggs Visitor Center, a tiny facility located at the end of the valley.

mound, now named Novarupta, is what actually blew. This steaming, squat black rock dome –- only 90m high and 1185m wide -- is a new volcano, a previously undiscovered volcanic vent now plugged by a lava dome several stories high. Its small size makes it difficult to imagine that it caused one of the largest recorded volcanic eruptions in history.

The 20th Century’s biggest eruption The eruption was so huge that it drained the magma from the area, causing the top of Mount Katmai to collapse, six miles away. When Robert Griggs of the US Geological Society (USGS) led an expedition to the area in 1916, he came across the otherworldly sight of a once-verdant valley covered in ash and peppered with thousands of steam jets. He named it the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes -- and though there are no more hissing fumaroles, the sight of this grey valley in the middle of Alaska’s lush summer greenery is no less awe-inspiring today. On this same expedition, Griggs discovered the two-mile wide caldera of Mount Katmai and mistakenly identified it as the source of the eruption. It was not until 40 years later that researchers realized that the domed

The valley, which was never inhabited by humans, has always been an important traverse for animals travelling between Katmai Bay on Shekilof Strait and the salmon-filled Brook River. It is still common to see grizzlies or their prints, and nearby Brooks Falls is a world-renowned bear watching spot, where grizzlies perch on top of a small waterfall and snap up the salmon jumping upstream. Trekking the valley While thousands of visitors descend upon Brooks Camp (set at the mouth of the Brooks River near Brooks Falls) each summer, most only make a day trip to the Griggs Visitor Center. From here you can hike a mile to the tip of the valley at the ash flow’s farthest reach, or to a raging waterfall at Three

my world

Forks Overlook, on the outer edge of the valley. But spending a few days in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes can be the trip of a lifetime. A several-day trek is the best way to explore the valley. There are no official trails and at least two river crossings, depending on where you explore. Treks should not be undertaken by inexperienced hikers, and you should plan for inclement weather and tough terrain. To reach the valley, catch the park bus ($52 each way) from Brooks Camp, which is in turn reached by air via Katmailand air service from either Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, or the town of King Salmon. Though the valley is only 23 miles from Brooks Camp, it takes an hour by bus up a bumpy dirt road to get there.

The bus drops hikers off about a mile from the Griggs Visitor’s Center, at the Windy Creek trailhead. Hikers follow a small path through alder trees to Windy Creek, a silty creek that must be forded. It is best to take hiking poles (and a friend) for this one. Search out the best spot to cross, and continue until you find the unofficial trail into the valley, packed down by other hikers. Because there are no official routes, you will need a map and compass to get your bearings. You will also need to ford the Lethe River, which slices through the valley’s ash in a deep, thin canyon. Because it is so remote and often changing, the valley and what lies beyond it remains shrouded in mystery and when the clouds clear, at least three steaming, snow-covered volcanoes are in sight. It is safe to say that there is no place on earth like this one.

Jack Reacher walks alone. Once a go-to hard man in the US military police, now he’s a drifter of no fixed abode. But the army tracks him down. Because someone has taken a long-range shot at the French president.. Only one man could have done it. And Reacher is the one man who can find him. This new heartstopping, nailbiting book in Lee Child’s number-one bestselling series takes Reacher across the Atlantic to Paris - and then to London. The stakes have never been higher - because this time, it’s personal.
