I have been pondering the art of positive thinking a great deal lately and in conclusion resolved that there really is no other option. To survive in this life we must think, act and ultimately become positive and with this in mind, I thought I would share an inspiring tale: One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off! MORAL : Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells by never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up. Remember these five simple rules and be happy: 1. Free your heart from hatred - Forgive. 2. Free your mind from worries - Most never happens. 3. Live simply and appreciate what you have.

Kenyan lawyer offers 50 cows and more livestock to wed Obama’s daughter A Kenyan lawyer has offered US president Barack Obama 50 cows and other assorted livestock in exchange for his 16-year old daughter Malia’s hand in marriage, a report said Tuesday. Felix Kiprono said he was willing to pay 50 cows, 70 sheep and 30 goats in order to fulfil his dream of marrying the first daughter. “I got interested in her in 2008,” Kiprono said, in an interview with The Nairobian newspaper. At that time President Obama was running for office for the first time and Malia was a 10-year-old. “As a matter of fact, I haven’t dated anyone since and promise to be faithful to her. I have shared this with my family and they are willing to help me raise the bride price,” he said. Kiprono said he intended to put his offer of marriage to Obama and hopes the president will bring his daughter with him when he makes his first presidential visit to Kenya, the country where his father was born, in July.

Obama’s Kenyan grandmother, who is in her early 90s, still lives in Kogelo, in western Kenya, home to a number of the president’s relatives. “I am currently drafting a letter to Obama asking him to please have Malia accompany him for this trip. I hope the embassy will pass the letter to him,” he said. Kiprono dismissed the notion he might be a golddigger. “People might say I am after the family’s money, which is not the case. My love is real,” he insisted. The young lawyer, whose age was not revealed, said he had already planned his proposal, which would be made on a hill near his rural village, and the wedding at which champagne would be shunned in favour of a traditional sour milk called “mursik”. Kiprono said that as a couple he and the young Obama would lead “a simple life”. “I will teach Malia how to milk a cow, cook ugali (maize porridge) and prepare mursik like any other Kalenjin woman,” he said.

Pug gets married in a $2,000 wedding dress Jasper and Jasmine are two pugs who tied the knot in front of 350 human guests and 60 pugs in St Kilda, Australia. The pugs were adopted by a couple who own a pug rescue and adoption charity. The charity’s founder, Joanna Herceg, said a lot of other charities held dinners to raise money, but she thought they needed something bigger. ”So I thought let’s do a pug wedding! “Weddings are happy things and we are all about happiness.” Believe it or not, these two pugs dated for

about 7 years before they decided to get hitched. The wedding has got a lot of attention, with the pair even having their own social media accounts. There was “a puggy treats bar” full of dog food for the pugs to eat while the human guests were able to enjoy drinks, canapés, wedding cake and music.

ASK THE DR

Dear Dr. Gabe, How can I be sure that I am receiving the best possible health care when choosing a professional health practitioner? Dear Reader, Thank you for such a great question. Here is my advice for getting the best care: Find a doctor you trust and follow their advice. Continue to follow with that same doctor until they offer a referral to another doctor for a particular problem or you lose trust in them. Seeing several doctors for the same chronic problems causes confusion, medical errors, and sometimes harm. When choosing a doctor, seek recommendations from friends and / or other doctors and nurses. After you have seen a doctor, ask yourself, “Is this doctor someone I can trust to provide skillful care and advice that is in my best interest.” If the answer is yes, then follow their treatment advice. If the answer is no, then search for another doctor.

Only seek second opinions for major diagnosis and treatments (such as cancer or major surgery), and only if you are really unsure of what to do. Another good practice is to bring all your medications to every doctor visit. This really helps make sure you are getting the right medication and not being over treated. Be well, Dr. Gabe The doctor is always on call at The Source and asking the right questions can lead to better health. Dr. Gabriel comes to us from Oasis Hospital, where he practices family medicine. Simply send your questions to askthedoctor@ thesourceuae.com and see them answered and published in the magazine.

Philippine embassy offers aid to maid given death penalty in Al Ain A Filipina maid given the death penalty for killing her Emirati employer in Al Ain will appeal against her sentence with the help of her country’s embassy, senior diplomats said on Monday. Officials at Manila’s department of foreign affairs and the Philippine embassy in Abu Dhabi have identified her as Jennifer Dalquez of General Santos City in the southern Philippines. The 28-year-old claimed to have stabbed her employer in self-defence because he tried to rape her on December 7. On May 20, Dalquez was sentenced to death by an Al Ain court, said Grace Princesa, Philippine ambassador to the UAE. “We respect the judicial system of the UAE and have full faith in it,” Ms Princesa said. “We are now waiting for a copy of the verdict and will meet with the lawyer to decide the way forward.” Overseas Filipino workers who find themselves on the wrong side of the law are helped through the Philippine government’s legal assistance fund. Priority is usually given to the payment of lawyers to represent those accused of serious crimes or who are facing the death penalty. 10

“The embassy has extended all necessary assistance to Dalquez, including hiring a lawyer,” said Charles Jose, spokesman for the department of foreign affairs in Manila. “They will assist her in appealing her sentence and her family has been informed of these developments.” Ms Princesa, who met with the mother of two in prison last week, confirmed that a lawyer had been hired. “She was arrested on December 12, five days after it happened,” she said. “Since learning about her case we’ve provided her a lawyer, while our embassy officials have visited her in jail and attended the court hearings.” Prosecutors allowed the ambassador to meet with Dalquez privately on May 19, apart from the regular diplomatic visits scheduled each Wednesday. “The meeting lasted for more than an hour,” Ms Princesa said. “She told me that she killed him in self-defence.” In General Santos City, Dalquez’s mother, Rahima, told a local television network that her daughter stabbed the man using the same knife he had pointed at her. Dalquez had worked in the UAE since 2011. She was due to return home in January.

In UAE soon: ‘Super speed’ broadband from Etisalat

Opening up possibilities of up to 450Mbps mobile broadband speeds for customers in the UAE, Etisalat said yesterday that it has successfully completed the live testing of CAT-9 on its LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network. In 2014, Etisalat tested and deployed CAT-6 on its LTE-A network and enabled the country’s first 4G+ speeds of up to 300Mbps. The operator said its new CAT-9 LTE testing will give customers super speeds of up to 450Mbps, improving the overall user experience while streaming video and audio content, accessing high-speed interactive apps or browsing the Internet on the go. “It will provide [customers] with much faster download speeds, swift application response times, reliable connectivity and connections to the fastest networks,” said Saeed AlZarouni, Senior Vice President, Mobile Network at Etisalat. Upon wider CAT-9 LTE rollout, customers can enjoy the speeds when smartphones supporting CAT-9 capabilities become available in the market.

THE “GREEN THING”

C

hecking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment. The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, “We didn’t have this ‘green thing’ back in my day.”

The young clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.” The older lady said that she was right -- our generation didn’t have the “green thing” in its day. The older lady went on to explain: Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn’t have the “green thing” back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for

12

The Source

numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribbling. But, too bad we didn’t do the “green thing” back then. We walked up stairs because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the “green thing” in our day. Back then we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. But that young lady is right; we didn’t have the “green thing” back in our day. Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand

because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right; we didn’t have the “green thing” back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the “green thing” back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family’s SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the “green thing.” But isn’t it sad, the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the “green thing” back then?

Do Women Outnumber Men?

T

he number of men and women in the world is roughly equal, though men hold a slight lead with 102 men for 100 women (in 2010). More precisely, out of 1,000 people, 504 are men (50.4%) and 496 are women (49.6%). For every 100 girls, 107 boys are born, but males have a higher risk of dying than females, both in childhood and at adult ages. So at a certain age, the numbers of men and women even out. In France this occurs at age 25 (in 2010). Beyond this age, women outnumber men and the numerical difference between the two sexes increases with age. In France, eight centenarians in ten are women (in 2010). Scientists have confirmed that throughout history women have outnumbered men and, consequently, contributed more to human genetic diversity.

By Ben Wolford

The authors of a new study claim to have used higher resolution gene sequencing than previous research to compare the DNA of hundreds of people in modern populations around the world. Peering into their father-inherited Y chromosomes and mother-inherited mitochondrial DNA, scientists can deduce a wealth of information about historical populations. Not only did they confirm the dominance of women, but they also estimated the original population of Mesopotamia and the approximate dates of major human migrations. “Our new sequencing technique removes previous biases, giving us a richer source of information about our genetic history,” said Dr. Mark Stoneking, an evolutionary geneticist at the Max Planck Institute, in a statement. “It allows us to take a closer look at the regional differences in populations, providing insights into the impact of sexbiased processes on human genetic variation.”

Today, women do not outnumber men. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are about 50 million more males out of the 7.2 billion of us. And in some countries of the world, the disparity is strikingly skewed toward men. In both Qatar and in the United Arab Emirates, for example, more than 70 percent of the population is male, according to The World Bank. Historically, however, women have enjoyed larger numbers, if not equal treatment. “The main drivers of this trend are likely to be processes such as polygamy, where one male mates with many females, and the fact that in most societies, women tend to move to live with their husbands,” the researchers said in a news release. “This has resulted in females making a greater genetic contribution to the global population than males.” When the first migrants left Africa 75,000 years ago for the Cradle of Civilization — modern Iraq and Kuwait — Stoneking and his team estimate there were fewer than 100 people. They suggest there were just 15 men and 26 women. They also point to a Bering Strait crossing, from Asia to North America, around 15,000 years ago, as is commonly accepted.

stuff for men

T

he way in which masculinity is portrayed is unhealthy both for males and society in general. We teach boys that in order to ‘be a man’ they must suppress their emotions, never engage with their problems and restrict the way they interact with fellow males and with females. What people often fail to realize is that the main culprit for this is early life education. When parents, and especially fathers, ignore their boys’ emotional responses and actively encourage them to inhibit emotional display, they send messages that directly contradict their natural psychological and physiological responses. Moreover, this also leaves fathers emotionally distant from their sons thus fostering additional problems. This is a very serious issue because it leaves boys highly emotionally unstable.

teach them is that crying can be a valid emotional response, part of a larger process of dealing with issues, which should be shared in the company of close friends or family. Crying is natural and culturally universal. It is part of a response mechanism that calms people down by releasing anxiety, frustration and sadness. Thus, crying itself is not irrational and it does not exclude rationalizing problems and anxieties. Moreover, it does not inhibit other types of development, such as professional peer relations, because it is essentially a private matter, a way of connecting with those close to oneself. Accordingly, by acknowledging the emotional needs of their sons, fathers not only encourage healthy behavior but also forge closer ties with them. It is also very important that fathers do this as they are the first example of masculinity boys encounter and thus essential to shaping their ideas.

We already know the results of this, that males, especially teenagers have disproportionately high rates of depression and suicide. This also restricts the way they interact with other men and with women by making them emotionally unavailable, and it eventually shapes the way they interact with their own sons. This is a specific as well as a general issue because what fathers signal to boys when they don’t validate crying as a normal emotional response is that generally emotions need to be suppressed.

Thus the main reason we need fathers to do this is to challenge preconceived and outdated notions of masculinity. Masculinity means very different things to different people and it is up to adult males to define themselves as they see fit. The problem when we force these conceptions on children is that we send messages we know are contradictory to their healthy emotional and psychological development. This is a problem that cannot be overstated as it drives so much of what we see as unhealthy behavior from men. By eliminating this tension they will be better apt to handle their own issues as well as to better relate to their peers and forge close connections with their close friends and family.

Now what does it mean that fathers should teach their boys that it is ok to cry? Does it mean teaching them to cry all the time, and that they should display emotions everywhere? - Obviously not! What it will 16

“No Health without Mental Health” By: Farid Nouisser

18

The Source

W

hen we are physically ill, it is absolutely n o r m a l , acceptable and in many cases imperative to seek the help of a professional h e a l t h practitioner – this is, of course, true with any type of ailment affecting every part of our anatomy except our minds. God forbid we should ever become mentally ill; then all this changes and the stigma that enshrouds this affliction, prevents so many from seeking the necessary help for personal and socially unacceptable reasons. But there are people like Dr. Nermin Negmeldin among us, who have not only dedicated their lives to the field of psychiatry, they advocate and are at the forefront of the awareness crusade essential to putting an end to the stigma associated with mental illness. I had the pleasure of visiting with Dr. Nermin and learning a great deal about her profession, its challenges and rewards. Hailing from Cairo, Egypt, Dr. Nermin has lived in Al Ain for the past one and a half years practicing at Al Noor Hospital. She has dedicated more than two post secondary school decades, entrenched in both studies and training to pursue her dream of helping people, not only cope, but take back their lives. Dr. Nermin’s qualifications include: Member of The Arab Board in Psychiatry, a Master of Neuro Psychiatry, a Member of The Royal College of Psychiatry and a Master of Child Psychiatry from King’s College U.K. Does your specialization keep you busy at Al Noor Hospital in Al Ain? “Busy would be an understatement! You see, unlike in many western countries, psychiatrists here do not have a large pool of associated health practitioners such as psychiatric nurses, psychologists and social workers, so the psychiatrists tend to cover a much wider spectrum of work, keeping them very busy indeed. We need to raise the level of professional awareness to train and recruit more of these practitioners thus alleviating the current burden on many psychiatrists working in this region.”

al majlis A person can go to work with a broken arm but no one can work, little lone function, when severely depressed. It is paramount for people to understand that without mental health there simply is no health at all!

Are people in this region comfortable with the idea of visiting Psychiatrists? “There is still a great deal of work to be done in regards to the stigma surrounding mental illness and although psychiatric cases are prevalent, only about 25% of those suffering from a type of mental disorder are currently being treated. Our culture is still grounded in the belief that certain forms of mental illness stem from demonic influences and lack of spiritual faith.” Would you say that psychiatric disorders are on the rise? “Most definitely and in fact, according to current trends, by 2020 depression will become the second most debilitating health problem surpassed only by heart disease! The associated health costs will become astronomical if steps are not taken to increase awareness and place early treatment at the forefront.” “If someone has diabetes there is a chemical imbalance and in this case it is associated with insulin. With depression, low levels of serotonin are at the root of the problem. We

immediately treat the diabetics but in many cases depression is swept under the rug and left untreated. People need to understand that as is the case with different levels of severity in diabetes, there are also different levels of mental illness and almost all are effectively treatable if one seeks help. People tend to categorize all psychiatric problems with schizophrenia (the most severe and also the least common form of mental illness) and this is simply not the case.” What are the biggest challenges associated with your profession? Some of the challenges include: •

Trying to explain that working in psychiatry is not dangerous and the patients do not present a threat

Attitudes towards mental illness must change and it should never be looked upon as a weakness

Attitudes towards medication must change and people cannot be reluctant to take them

Standard policies need to be put in place to empower doctors to take the necessary action to deter patients from becoming a risk to themselves and society

What are your biggest rewards? When someone’s life is in a complete state of chaos, unable to work, socialize, cope and potentially suicidal; to assist in turning that individual’s life around and placing them back on track to productivity, well I suppose one could say that this is the greatest reward anyone in my profession could ever hope for! Dr. Nermin is dedicating her life to bring light and hope back to many who have suffered in darkness and I applaud her courage in the face of so much human emotional neglect. Before leaving, I asked her to share some wisdom with our readers and this is what she said; “A person can go to work with a broken arm but no one can work, little lone function, when severely depressed. It is paramount for people to understand that without mental health there simply is no health at all!”

Swimming the distance for Nepal

B

y now there are very few people who are unaware of the tragic earthquakes that have struck Nepal in the past few weeks and many across the world are doing all they can to assist those that have had their lives destroyed by the catastrophes. Several people in Al Ain can now proudly add their names to the list of those who have helped, following a 12 hour swim-a-thon at Brighton College on the 14th May, organised in an attempt to raise money for those who have suffered as a result of the disasters. The event was organised by Angela Clarke and Sarah Stoll, Teacher of PE and Swimming Coach at Brighton College respectively, who spent over six hours in the pool each. The goal was to swim 2992 lengths, with one length representing one of the 2992 kilometres that separate Al Ain and Kathmandu, where some of the effects of the earthquakes were most noticeable. Between them, Mrs. Clarke and Mrs. Stoll swam over 1100 lengths. The rest of the distance was covered by other members of staff, students, parents and members from 20

the wider community who were all eager to contribute in whatever way possible. As most of Al Ain was just beginning to wake up at 6am, 21 teachers, students and parents were racing up and down the pool, covering an astounding 1300 lengths between them in only a single hour. During the college’s lunch hour, several students and teachers came back to do their bit, with some students as young as nine swimming over 100 lengths! As the day progressed it was decided that the distance would probably have to be increased to 3700 lengths, which would account for swimming up Mt. Everest and back down again. At almost exactly 3pm – with three of the 12 hours remaining – the 2992 lengths were finished, but the swimming did not. From 4pm to 6pm, over 50 people filled the pool, covering a colossal 4400 lengths. This took

the grand total up to 6692, meaning that between them the swimmers had gone from Al Ain to Kathmandu, up and down Everest and back to Al Ain again. “We felt we needed to do something for the Nepalese people who have lost so much as a result of the earthquakes,’ said Mrs. Clarke, “Some of the college’s staff are from Nepal and have been directly affected so it was important that we helped in some way.” On Wednesday 20th May it was revealed that an immense 18,000 dirhams had been raised by the event, all of which will go towards helping the Nepalese people. Massive congratulations to all those who donated, participated or supported, but most of all to Mrs. Clarke and Mrs. Stoll, without whom the event would not have happened.

CONJUNCTIVITIS

C

onjunctivitis, (pinkeye), is a common condition that causes redness and swelling of the conjunctiva. This clear membrane lines the eyelid and the surface of the eye. The conjunctiva becomes swollen or red when irritated or infected. The condition usually is not serious and often goes away in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment.

Most cases of pinkeye are caused by infections caused by bacteria or viruses, dry eyes from lack of tears or exposure to wind and sun. It can also be caused by chemical or smoke exposure and allergies. Viral and bacterial pinkeye are contagious and spread very easily. Most pinkeye is caused by viruses for which there is usually no medical treatment, so preventing its spread is important. Poor hand-washing is the main cause of the spread of pinkeye. Sharing an object, such as a towel, with a person who has pinkeye can spread the infection. Viral pinkeye is often caused by an adenovirus, which is a common respiratory virus that can also cause a sore throat or upper respiratory infection. Symptoms of viral pinkeye include:

22

The Source

• • • • • •

Redness in the white of the eye Swelling of the eyelids Itching or burning feeling of the eyelids Swollen and tender areas in front of the ears A lot of tearing Clear or slightly thick, white drainage

Viral pinkeye symptoms usually last 5 to 7 days, but can last up to 3 weeks and can become ongoing or chronic. Pinkeye may be more serious if your immune system is impaired, have vision in only one eye or wear contact lenses. If the pinkeye is caused by a virus, the symptoms improve usually in three to five days. It is recommended to stay home from work or school to prevent the infection from spreading to others. Medications are usually not needed. Bacterial pinkeye may cause more drainage than viral pinkeye. Bacterial infections usually last 7 to 10 days without antibiotic treatment and 2 to 4 days with antibiotic treatment. The person can usually return to school or work 24 hours after an antibiotic has been started if symptoms have improved. Prescription antibiotic treatment usually kills the bacteria. Home treatment for pinkeye will help reduce your pain and keep your eye free

of drainage. Cold compresses or warm compresses (whichever feels best) can be used. If an allergy is the problem, a cool compress may feel better. If the pinkeye is caused by an infection, then a warm, moist compress may soothe your eye and help reduce redness and swelling. Warm, moist compresses may spread the infection from one eye to the other, so use a different compress for each eye, and use a clean compress for each application. When cleaning your eye, wipe from the inside (next to the nose) toward the outside. Use a clean surface for each wipe so that the drainage being cleaned away is not rubbed back across the eye. If tissues or wipes are used, make sure they are put in the trash. If washcloths are used to clean the eye, put them in the laundry right away so that no one else picks them up or uses them. After wiping your eye, wash your hands to prevent the pinkeye from spreading. If you wear contacts, remove them and wear glasses until your symptoms have gone away completely. Thoroughly clean your contacts and storage case. Consult an eye specialist if you experience increasing eye pain, sensitivity to light, or the symptoms increase. It is always recommended to consult your health care professional and continue medications (if given) and home care.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR CHILD’S SPIRIT

I By: JJ Green

believe it is safe to say that there have been times in our lives that we felt too fat or too skinny. Perhaps we were messy or disheveled in our personal hygiene and appearance, disorganized, too loud or less than impeccable with our spoken word, but would any of these downfalls have been reason enough for our friends and loved ones to have abandoned hope for us. Perhaps some kind words of encouragement and spirit rebuilding may have set us back square on our feet, ready to continue a dignified walk along the winding and often perilous road of life? I venture to say yes; it would have made all the difference in the world! I am a husband, a father of two boys and before any of these blessings ever found me, I was and still am a human being less than perfect but most important of all, aware of the latter and desperately wanting to improve! One of the most important things to appreciate as a parent is the uniqueness of every child and that all children come with their own signature spirit. Our job as parents is to nurture and not break that spirit in our attempts to raise respectful and productive human beings. Parenting is not easy and looking back at 26

The Source

some of my methodology in attempting to teach my children how to be has made me realize that some of my very common approaches have not necessarily been good ones. Here are some perhaps familiar blunders we may have all been privy to while attempting to teach our children and most important of all, the alternative choices that I believe will bring about more motivating results. If you needed to lose weight, what would be most motivating? You are fat. I’m not buying you any more clothes until you lose weight! Or: Let’s take a walk after dinner. I’ll let you make the salad. I love you just the way you are, exactly as you are. If you needed to learn how to swim, what would be most motivating? I don’t want to hear your crying. Get in the water and swim! Don’t be a baby! Or: I’ll be right by your side. You can do this. If not today, we’ll try again tomorrow. I love you just the way you are, exactly as you are.

If you needed to practice better hygiene, what would be most motivating? What is that awful smell? It’s a wonder you have any friends. Or: Let’s go to the store and pick out some deodorant. Your hair smells so good when you wash it. I think you should wash it every day. I love you just the way you are, exactly as you are. As we plow on through parenting with an arsenal of harshly delivered words and disapproving glares, we continue the spirit breaking process that eventually leads to less confident children stripped of their luster and leaving in many cases defeated souls – not so motivating! Forget shaming, condemnation, yelling, faultfinding, exasperation and rejection and replace them with encouragement, compassion, patience, communication, grace, praise and unconditional love! With loving encouragement you will most definitely watch your children blossom with confidence. They will not be afraid to take risks having learned that failure is a part of succeeding if we continue to try. They will find comfort and security knowing that they are loved regardless of their achievements and in turn will love themselves, which is paramount to a happy life in any social setting.

Ayla Bawadi’s “Around the World in 20 Dishes” By: Farid Nouisser

Ever since hearing about the Ayla Bawadi’s “Around the World in 20 Dishes” Saturday brunch, I have been eager to sample the delights of Sedra Restaurant’s culinary team. Last week end finally afforded my wife and I the opportunity to do just that. We began the day with a little early shopping at Bawadi Mall, and then headed over to Sedra Restaurant, conveniently located at the Ayla Bawadi Hotel, to let our taste buds travel around the globe to some of our favourite food destinations. The restaurant entrance was tastefully decorated with artifacts of famous ports of call and the friendly staff wasted no time greeting and ushering us to our comfortable table where we prepared to embark on our gastronomic journey. The overall presentation was impeccable with smiling chefs at every station eager to serve while describing their mouth watering creations. Although my wife and I opted for a relaxing brunch without the kids, I should mention that this is definitely a place you will want

For AED 80 you will be spoiled with ambiance, great food and soft drinks; truly an amazing deal that should not be overlooked by anyone who enjoys a pampering without encroaching on a tight budget. But don’t wait as long as I did to experience this amazing offer as “Around the World in 20 Dishes” is only available until the beginning of Ramadan. “Bon Voyage and Bon Apetite!”

Too much time watching tv or playing computer games can hamper under-fives development, says UAE’S ebdaah

28

Dr Madeleine Portwood

O

ne of the UK’s top educational psychologists and the consultant psychologist at Dubaibased specialist training and capacity building consultancy, Ebdaah, says the time children under five spend watching television or playing computer games should be kept to a minimum to help them develop social skills.

Dr Madeleine Portwood, the spokesperson for the British Psychological Society on Child Development, says too much TV and computer games stop children being active and developing physical skills, reduces the time they engage in imaginative play, reinforces stereotypical and inappropriate behaviour and restricted language abilities. “Only through books and social interactions can a child be immersed in rich and descriptive language. In short, more books, more time together and less time with the TV,” she advises. Dr Madeleine was speaking ahead of her one-day conference - Help Children Reach Their Potential: Accelerating Child Development In The Early Years - being held in Dubai’s Knowledge Village Conference Centre on June 13. During the conference, Dr Madeleine will outline how her proprietary Child Development Programme (CDP) can assist under-fives on the path to improved social behaviour, motor and communication skills.

social & community forum will enable that to develop. Why should we leave them to their own devices and say, ‘Let’s see if it’s going to come naturally?” Dr Madeleine said children between three and four live in an almost completely visual world where experiences can have little meaning and rob them of any stored visual reminders leaving them struggling to answer questions even about recent happenings. This can lead to disruptive behaviour. “They are unable to reason, and struggle to understand when there is too much choice or things don’t go their way. The result is a tantrum, which doesn’t mean the parents are bad, it’s simply a developmental stage!”

more aware of their own behaviour and to regulate their emotions and frustrations when things don’t always go their way. They can learn to accept compromise without showing anger or aggression. They can learn that it is ok to feel emotions such as angry, sad, frightened or excited, but know how to regulate their responses and develop ‘emotional intelligence’.” Watching children at play, says Dr Madeleine, can identified their social skill level. The solitary child plays alone oblivious of other children. The parallel child plays next to another, and in a similar way the co-operative toddler will play with other children in a common scenario and take turns.

Parents, said Dr Madeleine, are fundamental in helping children acquire a better understanding of how others think and feel, which helps the youngsters’ negotiating skills to develop.

The social skills guidelines are part of Dr Madeleine’s CDP which allows preschool teachers and parents to fast track the movement, thinking, language, communications and social skills of early years’ children.

“It helps to provide limited choices,” she explained. “Don’t say to your child, ‘What would you like to wear?’ The chances of ending up with a tantrum if your opinion differs from theirs is very high. Instead say, ‘Do you want to wear the red or the blue trainers?’. You are still giving a choice but one that is restricted. The child has an opportunity to practise making choices where the outcome doesn’t matter.”

The conference comes in the wake of UK evidence which shows that some preschool children are lagging behind in the development stakes often because of a lack of specialised opportunity and activities. While in Dubai, Dr Madeleine will share with pre-school teachers and healthcare specialists how to measure and track children’s skills to their full potential.

Another area of potential conflict, particularly if there are other children involved is: who goes first? “The CDP helps parents train a child to understand the importance of turn-taking in a way that doesn’t lead to anger and screaming. They need to begin to become

UK studies have shown how, on average youngsters on the programme, which is validated as evidence-based by the UK’s Department of Education, made 13 months progress in just six months. “Young children develop differently but if we can optimise chances and learning, then all children can benefit. A child may have potential that isn’t being realised, so it is important to provide opportunities that

Rock climbing personality Dean Potter (49) was one of two men killed over the weekend during a failed BASE jump attempt in California’s Yosemite National Park. Potter and Graham Hunt lost their lives during a wingsuit flight from Taft Point, a scenic overlook perched 3,000 feet above Yosemite Valley. They were unsuccessful in navigating the park’s granite cliffs, and collided with the rock before they were able to pull their parachutes. “It’s tremendously sad,” Yosemite chief of staff Mike Gauthier said. “Dean was part of this community and had such an impact on climbing. He was a luminary and in the pantheon of climbing gods.” BASE jumping is illegal in all US National Parks.

The OLED process is currently super expensive, resulting in a 4K 65-inch version selling for $9,000. That’s because the process isn’t always successful, meaning that too many of the produced screens don’t work. But, according to the company, they have made several breakthroughs in this arena that will bring about an 80% yield and potentially lower costs. With the rapid transition from LCD to plasma to LED and now OLED, we’re racing towards a world of incredibly thin, lightweight screens that can be attached to just about any surface. One of the reasons

OLED is considered the future is because the organic compound involved in production puts off its own light, which means the traditional element of backlighting is no longer necessary. While LG has yet to announce plans to sell the wallpaper television, it’s fascinating to think about how these kinds of screens will change the way we watch television — or at least organize our rooms for optimal watching — and also wonder what will come out after this in an effort to top it. Here’s hoping everyone runs with the wallpaper idea so we can just fully cover our walls with massive screens. The Source

International Nurses Day & Florence Nightingale

F

lorence Nightingale is considered the founder of the modern nursing profession, and May 12th was the 195th anniversary of her birth. International Nurses Day is celebrated each year on this day in honor of the nurses who’ve touched our lives.

Florence Nightingale is best known for having founded modern nursing and helped improve the care provided by hospitals. She was named after her birthplace, Florence, Italy. Raised in England during the Victorian Age, her father provided her a good education through tutors, especially in classics and mathematics. She went on to seek a career in nursing, despite her family’s disapproval. Up to that time nurses had mostly been religious, monastic women or untrained helpers of low repute. Nonetheless, she perceived a calling, and chose to rebel against the traditional woman’s role as a wife and mother. Her early career began with extensive training and eventually her contributions during the Crimean War (1854-56). Florence trained in Egypt, Germany and France, before serving in a home for “gentlewomen” suffering from illness in London. During this time, she began to hear of the horrific conditions the wounded were living in during the Crimean War. She and thirty-eight other nurses volunteered to help

tend to the wounded. She became famous for her dedication toward the welfare of her patients, earning the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp” for her tending the sick through the night. More significantly, she sought to improve sanitary conditions in the medical facilities. She proved her case through statistical analysis, using what she called “coxcombs,” now known as “polar-area diagrams.” Her proof of the effectiveness of proper hygiene for the recovery from wounds and disease led to a reform of the entire military hospital system. Nightingale’s work continued to help improve health care through the rest of her life. After the war, using money donated from her former patients and the public, she founded the Nightingale Training Schooland Home for Nurses at St. Thomas’ Hospital. This institution continued to improve what was becoming the nursing profession. Many of the nurses trained at her schools went on to become matrons at the leading hospitals in England, further solidifying and organizing nurses. Nightingale remained unmarried, and retreated increasingly into the isolation of her home because of ill health. Yet

through her writing, she remained an important consultant on health issues. Her extensive use of diagrams helped to make her work understandable to professionals and the common person alike. Her work won her fame, awards, and honors during her lifetime. She was honored with the Royal Red Cross in 1883 and was also the first woman elected to the Royal Statistical Society. In 1907, she was the first woman to be granted the British Order of Merit. By her death in 1910, Nightingale had lived to see enormous changes occur in the medical field because of her work. She broke through gender barriers and made nursing an organized and respectable profession. Health conditions improved in the military through her work and research during the Crimean War. Eventually health conditions began to improve all over England through her nursing schools. Her work was invaluable to society and set a foundation for high sanitary standards. The world is indebted to Florence Nightingale and her amazing contributions to medicine. The Source 33

SURREAL SALALAH

ne good reason Salalah should be your travel destination this summer vacation is its climate. While the sun scorches and temperatures soar into the 40’s and 50’s in the GCC, Salalah enjoys its Khareef (Monsoon) season, where the temperature rarely climbs beyond 27 degrees. Salalah, located in the Dhofar region of Oman, boasts its best climate during this season (July until beginning of September). A carpet of lush greenery with hills blanketed in white fog, are part of a distinctive topographic diversity that blends a serene coast with both desert and majestic mountains. The all-day drizzle, the cool air and the surpassing fogs will definitely entice any visitor. Although the entire city is a scenic heaven, some places show it best. The Mughsayl beach is one such place. The beautifully laid walkways are a gateway to nature’s beauty. The water splashing upwards through blow holes is definitely a delight to watch and so are the cloud clad cliffs overlooking the blue-green shade of the ocean. The road past Mughsayl leads up into the Dhofar Mountains. The road continues to plateau at 1000m above sea level leading to Dalkut (Yemeni border). This is 34

MEMORY MAN By Baldacci, David

The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good, and left him with an improbable side effect--he can never forget anything. The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare--his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered.
