ith the arrival of each New Year, humanity resolves to improve itself by eradicating undesirable practices and introducing the cultivation of healthy habits. But while typical New Year’s resolutions tend to target bodily health issues, the most meaningful ones aim at a deeper kind of health, focusing on the refinement of our mental, spiritual, and emotional habits — which often dictate our physical ones.
We have all heard the expression “life is too short” but this is in fact a lie! Life is, in most cases, long enough, but we choose to shorten it by squandering our time on earth in pursuit of meaningless bounty, unfulfilling relationships and selfish advancements. A sufficiently generous amount of living is doled out to the masses with a divine intent for wise investment, yet with so much of life wasted, it comes as no surprise that many among us are forced by death’s ultimate constraint to deduce that it has passed us by far too quickly. Fortunately, I am healthy and God willing have a fair bit of my life ahead of me to discover and enjoy. If I were to make a resolution this year, it would definitely steer in the direction of the road less travelled by yours truly. I want my focus to be on creating memories instead of to-dolists. I prefer the caress of my wife and children rather than the pressures of over-commitment. I long to lose myself in meaningful conversations with friends and loved ones instead of drowning in an ocean of unimportant emails. I want to be astounded by nature’s breathtaking beauty, majestic power and the tide of serenity that accompanies each spectacular sunset, instead of the emotional drain experienced with an overloaded agenda. Let the buzzing in my life be the joyous sound of laughter and appreciation, not the constant intrusion of cell phones and text messages. This may be a tall order and a trifle too ambitious but everything I am asking for is what we humans deserve from this life; so without wasting any more time, off I go with my best foot forward…

Three people were injured in an accident involving 19 cars on Abu Dhabi – Al Ain road on Saturday morning due to low visibility during thick fog. According to Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Bloushi, Head of Peripheral Regions Traffic Department at Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, initial investigation results showed that the accident occurred due to thick fog that blanketed the area and reduced horizontal visibility. HH General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Reintroduction programme releases
100 Nubian Ibex in Wadi Rum Jordan
T
he Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) successfully completed the transfer of a Nubian Ibex herd to Wadi Rum nature reserve, where the herd will remain in a controlled environment that will allow them to adapt to the new habitat before their final release into the wild.
The transfer came following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between EAD and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) earlier in 2014, with respect to HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s Nubian Ibex Reintroduction and Release Programme at the Wadi Rum nature reserve in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The release programme supports the UAE’s efforts in encouraging the conservation of wild species in their natural habitats. The MoU was signed by HE Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary General of EAD, and HE Dr. Kamel Mahadin, Chief Commissioner of ASEZA, and will result in the development and adoption of a long-term strategy aimed at engaging local communities and relevant authorities to minimize the risks that may affect the herd’s sustainability in the Wadi Rum natural reserve. In the last century, the Nubian Ibex has

become an endangered species in Jordan. Only a limited number remain in the mountainous areas of the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum due to irresponsible human practices including illegal poaching and the destruction of the species’ natural habitats. EAD’s terrestrial biodiversity team worked closely with the team at Wadi Rum nature reserve to transfer 100 Nubian Ibex (70 females and 30 males) to a dedicated, protected area. The transfer relied on the participation of Wadi Rum’s local community, who praised EAD’s efforts in protecting and conserving the region’s wildlife and natural heritage. HE Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary General of EAD, commented: “This reintroduction project will ensure that Nubian Ibex will roam free in the Wadi Rum nature reserve, their natural habitat. Effective programme management coupled with the support of local communities and authorities will ultimately ensure the sustainability of the species within the reserve. HE Dr. Kamel Mahadin, Chief Commissioner of Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), highlighted the importance of Wadi Rum nature reserve in protecting the area’s biodiversity. Wadi Rum nature reserve was recently added to the list of World Heritage reserves due to its historical and cultural importance that extends six thousand years BC. Dr. Mahadin praised the continuous support of the government of Abu Dhabi,
represented by EAD, in protecting Wadi Rum’s biodiversity. Dr. Mahadin also commended EAD’s efforts to reintroduce the Nubian Ibex back into the wild, and for the agency’s strong support in ensuring the success of this project. The project is managed by EAD in collaboration with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority represented by the Wadi Rum nature reserve, in addition to the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature. The project will also see the implementation of four set objectives which includes ensuring the herd’s sustainability within its natural habitat, and implementing awareness programmes designed to educate the local community and respective authorities on the importance and impact of the project.

Being vs Doing in 2015
I
have never been one for making or keeping New Year’s resolutions. While I do my best to keep my word to others, I break numerous promises to myself regularly. As a matter of fact I woke up this morning with the promise of eating only one piece of chocolate today, but I promptly managed to break this promise by 10am. Therefore, I started to look at the New Year, not as a time to “do” something differently but rather, to BE someone different.
Recently, I was discussing the importance of soft skills with my Emirati college students, who will likely be managers in various industries in the near future. I explained that skills such as being punctual, honest and empathetic are not learned in the classroom, rather, developed over time as you build professional relationships. Women recognized that these skills are not 16

only essential for success in the workplace, but they are also useful when fostering our personal relationships. With a fresh new year ahead, why not aspire to be more…
of mind. Feeling intellectually challenged sparks new ideas and makes you a generally more interesting person to be around.
…supportive of others
We are all guilty of squandering precious time on silly things we later regret; social media, cat videos, abundant editing of selfies that we must post daily. Many of us came to the UAE to live an adventure, to seize the moment and to explore a part of the world we knew little about, yet we find ourselves falling back into the same routines we longed to escape back in our native lands.
Often, we get caught up in our own worries, responsibilities and routines, and don’t recognize when loved ones need an encouraging word. Just as you would support a colleague through a demanding task, friends and family deserve your attention and time, too. What’s the best way to be supportive? Truly listen without judgment or feeling like you need to come to their rescue. Often, friends are not looking for you to solve their problems; they are simply looking for someone to hear them out.
…self-enriched
We attend professional development seminars to do our jobs better and stay on top of our careers. Why not take time for personal development? Whether it’s trying out a new aerobics class, taking an Arabic course or picking up a paintbrush for the first time, taking the initiative to pursue a personal interest leads to a positive state
…aware of time
In this ever changing nation, our stay here could be cut short at any given time. Do we really want to spend it checking status updates or do we want to be in the moment and marvel at the wonders around us? As the Dalai Lama once said, “There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called Yesterday and the other is called Tomorrow. Today is the right day to Love, Believe, Do and mostly Live.”

New Year’s Resolutions Every Man Should Make!
W
ith the arrival of 2015, i n e v i t a b l y, many of us will indulge in a bit of navel gazing. We will look at our flaws, faults, bad habits, and failed ambitions, and resolve to do better in the future. While we all know New Year’s resolutions are far easier to make than they are to keep, it doesn’t stop us from promising ourselves a more successful, more productive and happier year than the last one. We’ve decided to offer a helping hand toward achieving that triumvirate of aims. These are New Year's resolutions that every man should make -- and that any man can manage. We aren’t suggesting very specific aims; rather, these are designed to make you think about what you really want out of life and you should interpret them in a way that is appropriate for you. 1. Visit a new destination: Whether you have a dream destination in mind or

you simply throw a dart at a map of the world, going somewhere new is the most important New Year’s resolution all men should make. Visiting somewhere new can even include the restaurant you walk past every day, the local museum or the next town over. 2. Help someone: It is very easy to become self-absorbed and forget there are always people in need of help. Don’t make that mistake this year. 3. Conquer a fear: Everyone has fears. This year, pick one, confront it and kick it in the proverbial butt and walk away feeling great – we promise! 4. Open a savings account: Put a percentage of your salary in each month and don’t touch it! Pretty soon you won’t miss the money you have put away, and it will gradually grow into the beginnings of a nest egg. 5. Start a workout routine: Find one that suits your aims and then get going with it. You will find you have more energy, you look and feel better, and those love handles will cease to be a concern. 6. Devote more time to your hobbies: Whether it’s a sport, a musical instrument or some incredibly obscure activity, make time for it again.
7. Go to a career conference: There are very few men out there who are entirely satisfied with the position they are in career-wise, and the rest of us don’t necessarily know how to progress. It will dig you out of the rut you find yourself stuck in, and may be just what you need to finally start getting the recognition you deserve at work. 8. Make an appointment for a checkup: Make an appointment for that checkup, even if it is just to confirm that everything’s working the way it should be. The importance of your health cannot be overstated; take one small step to help yourself. 9. Read a big book: Not only will it make you more erudite, as you discover why that novel is held in such high regard but it may just kick-start a new enthusiasm for reading. 10. Build something: Whether it is turning a plank of wood into a shelf or rewiring your entire house (which we wouldn’t suggest as a first project), a manual project is certainly a resolution all men should make.

Teach Your Children Well
I
t has been said by some that children are like sponges; they tend to soak up everything and every influence around them. Although Sociologists maintain that manners are unenforceable, it is very obvious that these standards or norms of behavior, if reinforced, can become a way of living for any child or adult. The key to teaching children to behave mannerly, as little ladies and gentlemen is instruction.
Follow these helpful tips for teaching your own child manners: 1. MODEL MANNERS. If you want your child to model manners, you must make sure you do as well. The first step to having a mannerly child is being a mannerly parent.
2. PRACTICE AT HOME. It is unrealistic for your child to just pick up the habit of good manners by telepathy. He or she needs to have lots of practice in the fine art of social graces. Take time to engage in role playing with your son or daughter. For instance, practice how to be courteous when using the telephone.
3. GIVE HIM OR HER THE WORDS. There are 5 words that should be among the first in every child's primary vocabulary. These should be used while speaking to children as young as 6 months old. Here are five phrases that your child must master: 'Thank you.' 'Please?' 'May I ‌' 'Excuse me.' And 'No, thank you.' No exceptions-these are required! 4. GIVE YOUR YOUNGSTER POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. Children love praise; especially when it comes from a parent or loved one. Always encourage them. 5. BE PATIENT. It is true that most children are self-centered by nature. Every parent recognizes this very early in the parenting charge. Again, stay encouraged, just as with anyone learning how to do what is right, children need time to understand how to be mannerly. 6. LEARN TO COACH. The field of Life Coaching is becoming more popular and needful. Many people are finding that they need someone to not only hold them accountable but to listen to their dreams, desires and assist them in goal setting. Help your child to establish social goals that will better equip him or her for daily interpersonal communication and interaction 7. TEACH TABLE MANNERS. If you need help with learning which fork to use and where your napkin goes, there are many great manners and etiquette books available to assist you in getting it right. Once you understand the rules, be sure to share them with your son or daughter.

8. CORRECT HIM OR HER ON THE SPOT. Very young children often times don't realize what they are doing. For example, if you are speaking with a friend and your child interrupts you. Beg your friend's pardon and let your child know that his or her interruption is inappropriate. 9. SPEAK WELL. Unless you want your child to speak in a sloppy, slang-ridden way, be well-spoken yourself. 10. LOSE THE PREJUDICES. Your children are going to model your biases. If you hold strong opinions about a particular group or person, you should not make this a public point. Teach your children to judge a person by the 'content of their character' . I hope these tips are helpful as you seek to teach your children to behave with manners and etiquette within society and in their daily lives.

10 Tips to Help You Keep Your
New Year’s Resolution
E
very year many of us embark on self improvement by means of the infamous New Year’s resolution, and every year most of us fail at achieving the desired goals. If you have once again resolved to make some personal changes in 2015 and are tired of being categorized among the spineless jelly fish, then here are some wise tips to help you succeed. 1. BE REALISTIC The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favorite food again is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now.
2. PLAN AHEAD Don’t make your resolution on New Year’s Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be based on your mindset that particular day. Instead, it should be planned well before December 31st arrives. 3. OUTLINE YOUR PLAN Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have that piece
24
The Source
of cake. This could include calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking and self-talk, or reminding yourself how your “bad” will affect your goal. 4. MAKE A “PROS” AND “CONS” LIST It may help to see a list of items on paper to keep your motivation strong. Develop this list over time, and ask others to contribute to it. Keep your list with you and refer to it when you need help keeping your resolve. 5. TALK ABOUT IT Don’t keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best-case scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other. 6. REWARD YOURSELF This doesn’t mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates if your resolution is to eat a better diet. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you have been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, reward yourself with new fitness clothing or by going to a movie with a friend. 7. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS Keep track of each small success. Short-
term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds, focus on losing the first five. Keep a food journal to help you stay on track, and reward yourself for each five pounds lost. 8. DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, and take one day at a time. 9. STICK TO IT Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient! 10. KEEP TRYING If you have totally run out of steam when it comes to keeping your resolution by midFebruary, don’t despair. Start over again! Recommit yourself for 24 hours. You can do anything for 24 hours. The 24-hour increments will soon build on each other and, before you know it, you will be back on track.

THE RAW FOOD DIET
I
n this diet, the goal is to eat unprocessed, whole plant-based, ideally organic foods. At least three quarters of the person’s diet should be of uncooked food. The concept behind this diet is that food enzymes are destroyed if food is heated above 116 Fahrenheit (47 Celsius/ Centigrade). These vital enzymes allow us to fully digest our foods without having to rely on our own digestive enzymes. It is believed that cooked food takes longer to digest and block up the digestive system with partially digested fats, protein and carbohydrates. Plant-based diets have been linked to improving the body’s ability to fight diseases such as cancer, heart problems and reduce the risk of diabetes. What foods are eaten in this diet? • Beans •
Dried fruits
•
Fresh fruits and vegetables
•
Freshly made fruit and vegetable juices
•
Grains
•
Legumes
•
Milk from a young coconut
•
Nuts
•
Other organic or natural foods which have not been processed

How is raw food prepared? Soaking and Sprouting: Raw beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds contain enzyme inhibitors that are normally destroyed with cooking. The nutrients can be released by soaking them (germination) or sprouting them. This means soaking them for a certain amount of time. You can rinse beans, nuts, legumes, or seeds and place them in a glass container. Add room temperature purified water to cover and soak at room temperature overnight. Rinse a couple of times prior to use. Sprouting: After germination, seeds, beans, and legumes can be sprouted. After they are drained during the final step of the germination process, place them in a container for sprouting. Leave them at room temperature for the correct amount of time. The seed, bean, or legume will open and a sprout will grow from it. Rinse the sprouted nuts or seeds and drain well. They can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Blending: Foods can be blended or chopped using a food processor or blender, to make recipes for smoothies, pesto, soup or hummus.
Some benefits of the diet: • Weight loss and better health: many raw foods are low in in calories, fat, and sodium, and high in fiber. People on this diet observe an increase in energy levels, clearer skin, and improved digestion. •
Better nutritional value: Most of the diet’s staples are in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals. Cooking can decrease vitamins B and C. Also, eating lots of veggies and fruits is good for you.
However, you should take care that you are getting enough protein, iron, calcium, and other vitamins and minerals like B12. Most people on this diet do not eat animal products so taking vitamin supplements is a good idea. This diet needs a lot of motivation and commitment. It can be hard to maintain and eating out can be tricky. Cooking does have its advantages. It can boost nutrients such as beta-carotene and lycopene. It also kills bacteria, which helps you avoid food poisoning. Due to the risk of food poisoning and toxicity, a raw foods diet isn't recommended for pregnant women, young children, seniors, people with weak immune systems, and those with chronic medical conditions like kidney disease. Always consult your healthcare provider before you start any new diet regimen and think it through.

A Woman on the Cutting Edge
D By Farid Nouisser
r. Hana Kamal Al Madani is a General Surgeon Consultant, specializing in visceral and glandular surgery, an Emirati and best of all, a highly accomplished woman in a field dominated by men, bringing her ‘cutting edge’ expertise to our very own Al Noor hospital in Al Ain. I had the pleasure of meeting with this remarkable woman and the opportunity to share with our readers an outstanding story of achievement. Dr. Hana was born and raised in Abu Dhabi and has recently made her move to the Garden City, where she is bound and determined to serve the community in the best way possible in a profession that has become her living dream. Dr. Hana completed her MD at the Dubai Medical College in 1994 and followed through with a fellowship from Glasgow University in 1998. In 2010, she received

her fellowship in keyhole or minimal invasive surgery from Tagore University in India, and has been working at saving and improving the lives of her patients for almost 20 years. What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine? I chose medicine for its nobility and because of the need in my country for Emirati female doctors. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to have achieved this goal. I later decided to specialize in surgery because of the immediate gratification this line of work offers patients – you are able to diagnose a condition and in most cases, immediately improve or cure the problem! Were you one of the first female Emirati surgeons in the nation? I was, indeed, the first female Emirati surgeon to emerge from Abu Dhabi at the time and am very proud to say that today, there are more females studying general surgery in the UAE than men – an incredible turn of events! How does the local community respond to a female in your profession? It is an incredible feeling to be a female Emirati surgeon and although there are
still some old school attitudes regarding our place in this or any other high profile profession, the general support has been strong and acceptance from both the public and my professional peers has been encouraging. Did your family support you in the pursuit of this passion? My family provided huge support and, in fact, the fuel for my dream. My father, an accountant, is an incredible man who not only encouraged us to dream our biggest dreams but to pursue them with an aim to succeed. My mother holds a PHD in linguistics and her childhood dream was to become a doctor. The fulfillment of my dream as a surgeon inspired her to reignite her childhood passion and she has now completed her studies and joined her children in the field of medicine – did I mention that my two sisters and brother are also doctors? What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your career? My biggest challenge has been to convince my male colleagues that as female surgeons, we are both competitive and competent. Women in my field are constantly challenged and driven to prove

themselves. The first few years of my career were extremely stressful but my many years of experience have relieved that stress and today, I find myself prepared for any situation that confronts me.
I will admit that the patients, especially the men, are at first, somewhat apprehensive but they are always respectful, and after having provided them with a solution to often life threatening conditions, they are most grateful.
What are the biggest rewards? This is a very simple question with a simple response; the greatest satisfaction derived from my work is facilitating a cure for the many ailments of my patients – nothing could provide more joy than this! How are you received by your patients as a female surgeon?
What do you like to do on your free time? As a surgeon, I would like to think that I am good with my hands and as such, enjoy artistic hobbies that exploit this aptitude. I like painting, sculpting and cooking, and to satisfy my more physical needs, I enjoy sports and Zumba.
I love the city of Al Ain and always have! It is a beautiful and peaceful city boasting the highest population of UAE Nationals in the country, which gives me an opportunity to work with and help my people in the best way possible. Al Noor is the largest private health care organization in the country and their high standard of professionalism and exceptional philosophy of health care, provide an excellent platform to further my career and achieve all that this profession demands of me. I look forward to a long and fruitful journey with them! Although I sincerely hope that I will never require the services of Dr. Hana, it is reassuring to know that we have such highly qualified and dedicated individuals right here in Al Ain, ready to come to our rescue should the need ever arise – thank you doctor and welcome to Al Ain! Chris Rock files for divorce from Wife Malaak
Chris Rock and his wife Malaak Compton-Rock are ending their marriage, amicably. The two are parents to two daughters, ages 12 and 10. News about their split was confirmed on Sunday, three days after Christmas. "Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak," the actor's rep told. "This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family."
Kangana confesses she is dating; is it Hrithik?
Why so serious, Kim Kardashian? Well, that's an easy one—wrinkles, duh! The star is famous for perfecting her killer smize and resting bitch face in photos, but Kim recently took to Instagram to prove that she does flash her pearly whites from time to time (and even indulges in a laugh!), she just doesn't do it too often. And there's a very simple reason behind it.
"See I do smile... even laugh on occasion. Not too often though because it causes wrinkles," North West's mama wrote with a cute picture of her showing off her beautiful smile while making use of the photo booth at her family's Christmas party alongside pal Shamari Maurice.
Kendall Jenner, Selena Gomez and Gigi Hadid Enjoy Holiday Vacation in Abu Dhabi
Nothing like a holiday getaway! After their Christmas Day celebrations, BFFs Kendall Jenner, Selena Gomez and Gigi Hadid jetted off to the United Arab Emirates for a little vacation with their closest friends. The gal-pals took to Instagram to share lots of photos from their Arabian trip. Kangana recently confessed that she is in love but refused to divulge the name of her man. "I am in a relationship and enjoying this state. But, I don’t want to talk about it right now. It’s very special to me and I am glad to have found a companion. I hope I get into the position when I can talk about it. Right now, speaking about it would be unfair to the other person. As it is, relationships are difficult, aren’t they? My love life is exciting. When you’re in love, you kind of have to be sure about things that you make public. I hope it works out,” Kangana said. 30

In one close-up selfie, Kendall and Gigi sport traditional Middle Eastern hijab head scarves, one in black and the other light blue. The 19-year-old models look absolutely stunning while posing in the head scarves. In a second snapshot, Kendall, Selena and Gigi pose with a big group of their friends, which included Gigi's boyfriend Cody Simpson and model Devon Windsor. The group of 14 make silly faces while posing at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.
Kendall and Gigi also shared some scenic pics of the mosque's traditional Arab architecture. "Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. What an awesome cultural experience here in the United Arab Emirates," Cody also shared with a beautiful pic of the mosque.

AN ISLAND
PARADISE Our guest columnist’s trip to Africa was a holiday of a lifetime, encompassing adventure, romance, nature and great food. In part three, Rhiannon Downie explores unspoilt Zanzibar
O
n coming down to land in Zanzibar, I was excited to see the aqua blue ocean and beaches below me, in contrast to the plains of the Serengeti – both individually beautiful in their own way. Following our bush plane flight with Regional Air, we were transferred to Matemwe Retreat, which involved a fairly long drive along extremely bumpy village ‘roads’. Our stress melted away immediately on arrival though. We were greeted with a warm welcome by our personal butler, Adil, and the reception manager, Marco, who provided us with cold towels and fresh coconut juice. We were then shown to our self-contained private lodge, Villa Leila, which offered uninterrupted views of the turquoise Indian Ocean and included our own plunge pool on the roof, as well as a large sunken bathtub looking out onto the ocean. It was superb! There was an array of books to keep us company during downtime and a huge hammock to laze on in the midafternoons. The décor was stunning, with a tasteful mix of blues, whites and rustic sandy colours. If you’re looking for pure escapism and total

privacy, these are the villas for you. The inhouse dining and private butler service can’t fail to leave you feeling completely spoilt and impressed. Our first night was my husband’s birthday, so Adil arranged an intimate dinner in our villa, along with a delicious cake. Two of the retreat’s chefs also serenaded him, much to his embarrassment! Over the next four days, Adil treated us like royalty, ensuring our villa was always clean and tidy, taking our requests for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, and generally checking on us. Not used to such attentive service, I relished it for the first few days, before feeling the need to take a break from
the villa and mingle with the other guests in the main bar/restaurant area. Among the blissful hours spent sunbathing on our private rooftop and lazing in the plunge pool, we also really enjoyed a village walk. It was hard to see the locals living in relative poverty, and I took comfort in knowing that Asilia (the hotel chain that manages Matemwe) works closely with the surrounding villages to support trade, employment and education. Regardless of their situation, the locals we met still beamed huge smiles at us. We’d purchased lots of colourful pens and small toys from Dragon Mart in Dubai and handed these out to the children, who were delighted with their gifts.
my world A personal highlight for me during our stay was snorkeling off the shores of Nemba, a private island situated opposite our resort. Accompanying us on our trip was the retreat’s manager Ross, originally from South Africa and extremely entertaining and knowledgeable about marine life and local customs in Zanzibar. As we approached Nemba Island, we were warned not to venture too close, to avoid the $1,500 fine for standing on the sand bank … ouch! We jumped in and began to explore the ocean bed and marine life beneath us. It was so serene, peaceful and full of colour. Wearing hot pink flippers myself, I was transfixed by the schools of black fish, zebra fish, solitary sea snakes, stone fish, puffa fish, star fish, barracuda and sea urchins. We even saw a very well camouflaged, enormous octopus. It was an amazing experience, and one I would not hesitate to do again in a heartbeat. To end our Matemwe experience, we booked massages at the retreat’s Sea and Spice spa. These took place in a spa hut situated very close to the beach, and as our knots were eased, the sound of the waves sent us drifting off into a deep sleep. For our final dinner, we were led to a small private enclave by the hotel’s pool. Adil and fellow staff members had decked the surrounding area with hundreds of small candles. Adil was dressed in traditional Zanzibar attire and we dined on Swahili cuisine as we toasted our last evening at Matemwe.
STONE TOWN Due to our original flight back to Dubai being changed, we ended up with an extra day in Zanzibar, and got the chance to experience Stone Town, known by many as the birthplace of Queen legend Freddy Mercury, and famous for its flourishing spice trade, as well as the slave trade in the 19th century. Most of the houses in Stone Town are adorned with interesting architectural features, including grand Indian and Omani Arab-style doors, and the town is punctuated with major historical buildings, several of which are found on the seafront. These include former palaces lived in by sultans, fortifications, churches, mosques and other institutional buildings.
while watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean. Rhiannon Downie is the founder of BrideClubME.com, the UAE’s premier online information resource for brides
During our short time in Stone Time, we haggled with market traders to buy spices, jewellery and ornaments, and enjoyed some of the best coffee in Zanzibar (according to TripAdvisor reviewers and locals) at a run down but endearing coffee shop called Msumbi Coffee. We also took a tour of the former slave trade market, which, I won’t lie, was intense. Including graphic briefings on how the slaves were treated during the 1800s and a tour of the chambers, it was an emotional insight into history. If you find yourself in Stone Town and want some authentic food, I highly recommend eating at Lukmaam, a small, no-frills restaurant popular with locals, and incredibly cheap and delicious. Once our appetite was satisfied, we headed off to a bar recommended by many a seasoned Stone Town visitor, the Sunset Bar at Africa House, where we sampled the local shisha
