efore I get into the topic of discussion for this issue, I would like to fast forward to the upcoming, March 19th issue of The Source, as this will indeed be a particularly memorable edition of Al Ain’s favourite community magazine. We spent a few days last week working with some of the talented Brighton College students, introducing them to the mechanics of publishing a magazine. They were placed into the routine stressful, high pressure scenario of meeting production deadlines and in the end, came out shining. Much of the content in the upcoming March 19th issue of The Source will be brought to you, courtesy of the Brighton senior school efforts. They were absolutely amazing to work with and the stunning results may mark the end of my tenure with the magazine – what have I done?!
Now, getting back to the issue on hand, I would like to dedicate the remainder of my note to the gentler sex, responsible for much of the planets peaceful and humane agenda – without them we would be lost! March 8th is International Women’s Day and as a pro-feminist male, in the spirit of the much needed awareness, I will share some food for thought. Imagine this: I present an employment opportunity to a select group of men, offering a leadership position without disclosing the exact title. I describe the position as one of extreme responsibility, demanding the ability to function under frequent high pressure situations. I continue explaining that this role will allow for very few breaks; involve often excruciating long hours, 7 days a week with virtually no holidays. And as a matter of fact, during festivities such as Christmas, Easter, thanksgiving, birthdays etc, the work load will inevitably increase. At times, even the luxury of sleep will not be tolerated and worst of all, the compensation for this position does not involve any sort of monetary gain! I don’t believe that it would be surprising to anyone that every one of the selected applicants found the proposal to be absolutely absurd, not to mention that all agreed on my complete and utter insanity! Fair enough, but best of all was telling them before there mass exodus, that there are, in fact, already millions of women worldwide engaged in the proposed role. And better still; millions more are on a daily basis pledging their commitment to the job. Gentlemen they are not only women, they are mothers and without them there would be no world! Let’s support these women and every woman, not only on International Women’s Day, but every day!

ADOPT JOSHY Age: Young adult Joshy is a great family dog! He loves to be around the family and loves to play. Like with any young dog, Joshy likes to jump and mouth while playing so would best be suited to a family with children older than 8. His foster family have been helping to discourage both the jumping and mouthing. Whoever is lucky enough to foster Joshy next or welcome him into a forever home, will need to continue working with him. He has also been doing very well with the \'sit\', \'down\', and \'drop it\' commands. He is good with cats and does not chase after them but he does want to play with them and can get excited and bark at them. For adoption queries email animal. action@hotmail.com.

ASK THE TEACHER I have an 11 year old son who has little to no interest in participating in extracurricular activities at school, regardless of how much I stress the importance of inclusion. How far do I go to convince him that his participation at some level is a must? Extra-curricular activities should provide a fabulous opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and interests beyond the classroom. They should be exciting, engaging and meet the different interests and abilities of the pupils. I am sorry to hear that your son is reluctant to participate in them, since he may be missing out on some great experiences, which will certainly enhance his education. I would suggest trying to understand more about the situation first and then consider the best way forward. Generally speaking, children will be motivated to undertake an activity, if they get pleasure from it, if they achieve a feeling of belonging and if they gain a sense of success. Try to discover what motivates your son and – in this case – what is de-motivating him. For example, your son may love physical exercise, but not competitive sport. He may enjoy being with friends in his class, but feel socially isolated in an after-school activity. He might feel competent in familiar academic subjects, but worry about learning something new. It might be even more basic than that; your son might be tired, hungry or worried
that he won’t have time to play or do his homework after a long day at school… Once you have understood these push and pull factors, you will be best placed to address the issues involved. Persuasion is often a parent’s first well-meaning strategy but it isn’t necessarily the most effective one – and, indeed, can be a somewhat blunt tool at times (ask any parent of teenagers!) Instead, use what you now know about your child’s reluctance to participate in the activities, to help navigate through these challenges. For instance, if your child is worried about the social side of things, then the school could ensure he joins an activity with a close friend; if he feels tired at the end of the day, perhaps get him to sign up for fewer activities and arrange an earlier bedtime. What motivates one child may de-motivate another. Your question is very personal to your child. Indeed, your question doesn’t need an answer straight away – it needs more questions! Sarah The Source’s very own “Ask the Teacher” columnist, Sarah Wood, comes to us from Al Ain’s prestigious Brighton College, armed with a passion for bringing out the very best in the children she teaches. Sarah will be on hand in every issue of The Source to offer her professional advice on early childhood education best practices. Al Ain Rotana's 5th Charity walk for "Children with Cancer" on March 20 Al Ain Rotana is proud to present the 5th Charity Walk for children with Cancer under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Theyab Bin Tahnoon al Nahyan. On the 18th of March, 2011, Al Ain Rotana launched the very first “Charity Walk for Children with Caner” aiming to help kids suffering from this illness at a very young age. With the help of the kind-hearted sponsors who supported us in this event, we were able to donate AED 73,901 to the Red Crescent which has been a great help in these childrens' hospitalization. With our goal to continue helping, we're looking for companies to partner with us in order to support these less fortunate children. We aim to top the last walkathon's remarkable achievement with your support. We would like to invite you for a unique opportunity to be a part of this event. With the fun walk, we aim to raise funds to support the research for Paediatric oncology patients, which will help children suffering from cancer. 10

The walkathon will be followed by a small gathering at the hotel where the children can come and enjoy a variety of activities ranging from games and entertainment, face and sand painting and much more. In this way, we can try to make them happy and forget the struggle that they’re going through. Nothing is more fulfilling than to see smiles on the faces of these little angels. We are seeking for financial sponsors to support this worthwhile cause through donations.
The student was going through her school exams. She had taken four examinations, with three remaining. According to eye witness accounts, the girl’s name is Shalini Sanjay and hails from Bihar state. It is not yet known whether the girl’s fall was an accident or whether there were any other reasons for her fall. “Shalini had been appearing for her examinations. She was to attend a tuition class but it appears she did not go for tuition,” said a resident in the Al Zahra Hospital neighbourhood. According to the school authorities, she returned home after the examination at around 11.30am on Tuesday. She left on the school bus, according to school officials. Sharjah Police have cordoned off the area as part of an investigation into the mysterious death of the girl.
Abu Dhabi to get 'smart chip' enabled fuel pumps Using a ‘smart chip’, Adnoc Distribution will begin offering a package of smart services at its fuel pumps in Abu Dhabi for the first time in the world, the ‘Al Ittihad’ newspaper has reported. Abdullah Salem Al Dhaheri, CEO of Adnoc, pointed out that these services will use a smart sensor chip installed in the slot for car fuel filling tanks. He added also this chip will be linked to the bank account card of the customer and Adnoc, in addition to a security company. The chip will be programed according to the type of fuel and will be linked to the fuel pump lever. The chip will be programmed to send a text message with the quantity that has been filled. He added the car will stop working if there is any attempt to hack or disassemble the chip. He said the smart chip will replace the Rahal card . Al Dhaheri confirmed that 75 stations will be provided with the smart fuel pump which will enable the client to fill up the car himself. It will include various means of payment via ID card or credit card or payment of cash that will be linked to Etisalat.

Fisht Fight In an earlier incarnation, I earned my living as a delivery man, an occupation to which I was egregiously unsuited. It involved uniting workaday necessities with tetchy PAs asap, lest closing time find them aggrieved, spreadsheets unprinted, sans toner, and only me to blame.
the pair of us went at it hammer and tong in the street. A crowd gathered. Bets were taken.
Of my myriad problems, the most acute was parking. The city reserved curb-side loading zones for us professional desperados; however, these were few and subject to poaching by non-professional desperados, to whom any space was fair game.
Even as my fist fragmented the poacher's jaw and his head bounced in a crimson mist off the bonnet of his Beemer, I was ashamed. My response had been out of all proportion to the offence. I’d lost my composure and my dignity, not to mention a hefty chunk a’ change: the guy had seemed a shoo-in.
A sour soup brewed in this cauldron of dissatisfaction. Once upon a Christmas, crazed with the special desperation reserved for that special time of year, I came upon a poacher at the poach. First, I tooted. Then, I requested that he vacate the spot. When he refused, I discharged a tsunami of invective in his general direction. In response, he supplied me with directions for my next delivery. Without thinking I leapt from my van and, in the spirit of the season, gave the blackguard a gift: a fist to the face. He forced open his door, and I forced it closed again upon his knee. Livid and limping, he launched his muscles at me and

A voice cried above the calls of the odds, ‘Is it really worth fighting over a parking spot?’ My reply was unequivocal: ‘It is for me!’ I bawled. But I wasn’t being honest with myself.
I had been in the right, with the law on my side, until I resorted to violence. And so the subject turns, inevitably, to fishing. The other day I learned that the New Zealand navy is engaged in a stand-¬off with a pair of boats illegally taking tooth-fish from the Southern Ocean. Now, this kind of thing really gets my goat. There’s no question as to who’s in the wrong: protection ensures the survival of the species and thus the livelihood of fisherman. Uncontrolled exploitation would drive both parties to extinction. The authorities gave the New Zealanders
JJ Dubblejay
permission to board the boats, but the crew barred their way. If the poachers won’t cooperate, how should the navy respond? Part of me is all for murdering the crew and sinking their boats - perhaps the part of me who will always be a delivery man. Another part of me wants to simply sink the boats, leaving the sharks to work the death. That way my hands are cleaner, though not much. A more reasonable idea is to deny the miscreants a port and let them run out of fuel. Then, without power for the freezers, allow them to drift awhile as the catch putrefies beneath their feet. Before long they’ll be on their knees. But any of these suggestions would be a mistake. A better move might be to let the offenders know unambiguously that their behavior is unacceptable, but then educate them in sustainable practices. Convince them with kindness that the rules are both worthy of respect and worth their while financially. Still, they may choose not to cooperate. But no matter what happens, let’s leave out the violence. That way everybody stays in with the chance of a win.

History of International
Women’s Day Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity... If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior... If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women... Mahatma Gandhi
M
arch 8th marks International Wom en's Day which is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
•
1910 The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to build support for achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish Parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.
•
1911 As a result of the Copenhagen initiative, International Women's Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded women's rights to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.
•
1913-1914 International Women's Day also became a mechanism for protesting World War I. As part of the peace movement, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with other activists.
•
1917 Against the backdrop of the war, women in Russia again chose to protest and strike for "Bread and Peace" on the last Sunday in February (which fell on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar). Four days later, the Czar abdicated and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.
Chronology •
1909 The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.
Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global 14

dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women's rights and participation in the political and economic arenas. Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

of calcium. Some of which are dairy products (low-fat milk, cheeses and yogurt), dark green leafy vegetables (broccoli, kale, and collards), sardines and salmon, cooked dried beans, soy foods, almonds and fortified cereals and juices. Vitamin D is also important to help your body absorb calcium. Women should have 1,000 mg of calcium daily and men under 70 should have 1200 mg of calcium per day. If you're not getting enough vitamin D through sunlight or food, consider taking a supplement. Never go overboard with what you are consuming; all things should be in moderation.

steoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become brittle, weak and more susceptible to fractures. Over time, the body loses more and more bone density, until we develop osteoporosis causing bone collapse in the form of fractures. Often, the first sign of osteoporosis is when a fracture occurs. Dental X-rays may show a loss of bone in the jaw, which can be a sign of osteoporosis.
people. Most people, by the time they reach their late 30's, gradually start losing some of their bone mass, but for women, menopause is the time when this process really accelerates. Bone loss for men occurs much more slowly. However, by age 75, osteoporosis is as common in men as it is in women.
You can't get back bone once it's lost, but you can help maximize bone formation and minimize bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. The good news is, this disease is both preventable and treatable.
Some risk factors increase the chances of developing osteoporosis. Risk factors include: old age, female gender menopause, having parents or a family history of this condition, eating disorders, a diet that is poor in calcium and vitamin D, excess sodium and caffeine in diet and having a sedentary lifestyle. Smoking and certain medications can also increase the risk of developing osteoporosis.
WHO IS AT RISK? Surprisingly, it can strike at any age but it generally occurs in older
A person is often not aware that he or she has osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. Some signs to look for can indicate the condition. These include backache, a gradual loss of height and an accompanying stooped posture.
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT Screening is the first step. It is important during menopause but all people above the age of 65 should get tested. Screening for osteoporosis is a simple, painless, bone density test, which takes about five minutes. If you want to build stronger bones, you need three key elements: calcium, protein, and vitamin D. • Increase calcium: There are many great sources
16
The Source
•
Increase protein: Your diet should contain plenty of lean protein sources, such as lean meats and fish, beans, and cheese.
•
Exercise: People who have been put on bed rest or experienced limb immobilizations, and astronauts, who have very reduced physical activity due to a lack of gravity, all suffer from extensive bone density loss. This shows that exercise and movement are important for strong bones. Weightbearing exercises like walking, and strength training with weights or resistant bands three or four times a week can also significantly improve your bone health.
•
Control certain habits: Avoid smoking and limit caffeine (coffee, tea or caffeinated soda) to three cups a day.
Consider medications only with your doctor’s consultation. It is always worth trying to improve your body with healthy lifestyle habits. Your bones support you and you should support them too. For all health care needs, visit Al Noor Hospital and receive state-of-the-art best practice treatment.
A special thank you to the many friends of Brighton College, Al Ain for their very kind support!

On International Women's Day,
IS THERE A PLACE FOR MEN?
T
he answer to this question is a definite YES! We have daughters, wives, sisters and mothers and as such, should engage in being pro-feminist men, with a belief that gender equality is as important as any other social issue on the planet!
Women are now 40% of the global paid workforce and half of the world's food producers. With a few exceptions, girls are as likely as boys today to be in primary school. Millions of women in the Global South benefit from microcredit programs, and millions more are being lifted out of poverty with cash transfer programs. Fewer women today die during childbirth. There are more women in politics, in business, in government jobs and working outside of their homes than ever before. But women's income continues to be on average at least 20% less than men's for the same work. About a third of the world's women will experience violence from a male partner, or some form of sexual violence. Women's full participation in the highest levels of decision-making, the media and in business is shamefully unequal. We know that some men are opposed to

their mothers growing up are 2.5 times more likely to use violence against a female partner when they become adults. Men who grow up with violence are traumatized men. This does not excuse men's violence against women. It explains why effective prevention must include men and boys, while we also enhance laws and law enforcement. And it makes clear how our lives as men improve when we grow up in households without violence. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
full equality for women. But we also know that many men and boys support equality. By not shaming the vocal male opponents to women's equality, and by not capitalizing on the male advocates, many women's empowerment initiatives ignore men's and boys' role in gender equality. WHY DO WE NEED TO ENGAGE MEN TO EMPOWER WOMEN? Let's start with ending violence against women. There are many reasons men use violence against female partners. But this we know: it's not genetic. It's not part of our biological make-up as men; it is learned. The violence men see as children is the violence men use as adults. Our research finds that men who witness violence against
As men, we affirm this: Feminism is not exclusively for women or exclusively about women. Feminism is the simple, radical notion that women and girls are human beings. That affirmation means that men are inherently involved in feminism and it means that men's lives improve when we embrace the full equality of women. To men who are brave enough to fully accept and support it, feminism offers us the chance to see that we are not born to cause harm to others and that we are not inherently violent. That our birthright, and that of women, is to the full range of human potential and human relations, including having close, connected, caring, nonviolent and equal relationships with others. That's what we want for our daughters, wives, mothers and sisters. That's what we should want for ourselves as men and for all men on International Women's Day!

any Al Ain residents find themselves driving to the Big Cities several times during the week for a multitude of extracurricular classes for children and adults because not many are offered in our fair city. In time, those long drives are sure to become tiresome and tedious, with bumper to bumper traffic and throngs of people everywhere. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some fun and engaging activities right here in Al Ain? Luckily, businesses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are noticing Al Ain’s population growth and desire for diverse recreation, particularly for women. many expats are accustomed to back home. Elite Music, which is originally based in Abu Dhabi, is one such business. Elite started off in 2005 as a music institute, primarily serving children in Abu Dhabi. They opened their doors in Al Ain in Al Muwaiji just down the street from UAE University last fall and began offering music, dance and art lessons for children, but they are now offering courses for adults as well. The unassuming villa houses a dance studio, music rooms and art rooms to accommodate students in any discipline of the fine arts they choose to pursue. I want to create a community for women, a place where they can take art, music and dance with other adults.” Currently Elite is offering adult ballet lessons and aerobics. Confessions of a Stay At Home Parent
LaAisha Lorick is a full time mom and wife, from South Carolina, USA. She is also a teacher and best of all, sharing her parenting expertise with The Source readers.
Confessions of a Stay at Home Parent is a two part series that will explore the lives of two stay at home parents who exchanged their homeland’s professional roles with a domestic responsibility in the UAE. My aim is to shed light on the adjustments, joys, and demands of one of the most important jobs of all; raising a family!
BRYCE PRITCHARD
This New Zealander resides in Al Ain with his wife and three sons: Jake – 10, Koen – 8 and Louie – 5. The former manager of a gas laboratory now manages his home properly.
When asked how he manages his and the boys’ time, he readily confessed to having self-diagnosed OCD. “I am a compulsive list writer. I like my head to be as empty as possible in order to keep my calm and sanity while functioning as a stay at home dad - my wife finds half completed to do lists all over the house.” While his lovely wife may indeed find these lists, I’m sure there is no denying his ability to get it all done. Starting each day off with the acronym G.S.R.E.B (get up, shower, room tidying, eat breakfast, and brush teeth and hair), he usually hits the ground running in the mornings with breakfast waiting for his boys. There are, however, occasions, when his eldest son makes burnt toast for everyone and cold coffee for him. Staying true to his self-diagnosed OCD,

Bryce keeps a strict schedule regarding homeschooling, to show the children the importance of time management. The name of their school is “Home Sweet Home School”. They start school at 9am everyday and his children receive lessons in Math, English, physical education, reading, art, and online activities.
When asked about some of the funniest times he’s had as a stay at home parent he replied, “When we conduct science experiments, the mess, the discoveries, the failures and the fun, are always a blast and the kids just love making a mess, much to my OCD distress.”
While Bryce has no problem becoming an awesome “domestic god”, doing everything from folding underpants to cooking dinner, he confesses that there are days when the desire to hide under the covers in the morning for refuge from his kids is overwhelming – not to mention the touch of cabin fever associated with his new responsibilities! There are also times when he wishes he could trade in his apron for a business suit and his mop for a lawn mower. But as with everything else, there are days when one questions their current situation, yet Bryce is very clear about why he does what he does. He believes and explains that the benefits of being a stay at home parent are “seeing them grow right before my eyes, not only physically but emotionally. By staying at home and home schooling, I can keep my finger tightly on the pulse, and I am more than grateful for the opportunity to have positively influenced my children’s most formative years.”

Samsung S6 Edge with curved screen unveiled Samsung will sell two versions of its next flagship phone, one of which has a screen that curves round its sides. The Galaxy S6 Edge uses the feature to provide a quick way to stay in touch with select contacts, and to alert owners to important information. It will be sold for a higher price than the standard S6, which otherwise has the same specifications. Samsung lost market share to Apple and others after the S5 sold fewer copies than its predecessor in many countries. Changes include making the TouchWiz user interface simpler to use by cutting the number of pop-up messages and introducing a metal frame and glass back instead of the plastic styling of earlier models. The redesign has, however, meant some features have had to be jettisoned: the phones are not water-resistant, they do not have a microSD slot for extra storage and
their backs cannot be removed to change their batteries. The South Korean firm said it had set out to address past "missteps", and had codenamed the devices "project zero" to reflect the need for a rethink.Changes include making the TouchWiz user interface simpler to use by cutting the number of pop-up messages and introducing a metal frame and glass back instead of the plastic styling of earlier models. "The software has been made into a much more crisp and clear experience, the design of the product has clean lines and looks very nice, and the marketing campaign is expected to only pinpoint three things - and that's certainly something that had been missing from Samsung's products for quite some time."

to experience firsthand, the majestic and infamous Fujairah property. Last week end, we packed our bags and made haste to stunning Fujairah for some 5 star R&R. Expecting to embark on a long journey, I was amazed at how quickly we arrived at our destination. An easy one and a half hours saw us safely there, along a scenic new route that encountered none of the usual road chaos associated with trips to Dubai and Abu Dhabi – no traffic, just an effortless cruise chalked full of spectacular scenery! Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Dalia Mansour, the banquet manager and her colleague Ibnu Habbas. Not only was the reception synonymous with a warm embrace, complete with welcoming cocktails and snacks, these two were instrumental in assuring that every moment of our stay was transformed into a lasting memory.

I wondered if they had mistaken us for a honeymoon couple and my mind pondered the possibility of ditching our two boys – just kidding! First on the agenda was FOOD, and being unable to tear ourselves away from the enormous and luxurious new digs, we opted for room service and a family meal right in the comfort of our spacious dining area. The food was delicious to say the least and the service followed suit. After a brief chilling period, we ventured to the roof top pool, lavished in the warm, sparkling blue water and sipped on exotic fresh fruit cocktails under an immaculate blue sky, contrasting the stunning backdrop of the charcoal coloured mountains that surrounded us – could it get any better? Next up was an engaging game of pool and ping pong, after which the boys and I enjoyed a relaxing Jacuzzi while mom

The remainder of our stay continued in much the same fashion and we were truly heartbroken when the hour of departure finally arrived. But with a short, pleasant and hassle-free voyage from Al Ain, we knew we’d be back, and there’s no reason for anyone not to take advantage of the exquisite amenities at the newly acquired One to One Concorde Hotel, in the beautiful and inviting sea side city of Fujairah. Stephen Hawking’s Sweet Note to Eddie Redmayne After His Oscar Win "I'm very proud of you," the famous physicist wrote on Facebook Stephen Hawking, who joined Facebook just a few months ago, used the social media site to write a brief but touching note to Eddie Redmayne, who won the Best Actor Oscar Sunday night. In The Theory of Everything, Redmayne portrayed the world-renowned physicist and his struggle with ALS. Shortly after the Academy Awards ceremony, Hawking shared the following post, saying he was “very proud” of the actor:
In his acceptance speech, Redmayne said, “I’m fully aware that I am a lucky, lucky man. This Oscar belongs to all of those people around the world battling ALS.”
Oscars Winners
J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) took home Oscars for their Supporting Roles, while Julianne Moore (Still Alice) and Eddie Redmayne ( Theory of Everything) took home the top honors for Leading Roles.
Lady Gaga’s Performance at the Oscars Could Redefine Her Career At an Oscars ceremony whose high points were almost entirely musical, Lady Gaga stole the show. The “Bad Romance” singer ditched her usual elaborate theatrics for a pared-down, beautiful 50th anniversary tribute to The Sound of Music, for which she hit Julie Andrews’s high notes; the Oscarwinning actress thanked Gaga by name, proving that the establishment has accepted a pop star who was once the oddest girl in any room. What was shocking about it all was how un-shocking it was. After all, this isn’t just any pop star we’re talking about. Lady Gaga practically invented the current era of pop music as spectacle, one that’s become an escalating arms race of self-conscious oddity. 30

Make No Mistake: Monica Bellucci Is a Bond Woman, Not a Bond Girl
Monica Bellucci has made it clear that she’s a Bond woman and not a Bond girl. But the 50-yearold Italian actress and model—who is portraying one of Daniel Craig’s love interests in the next Bond film, Spectre— recently shared her initial surprise about being considered for the role. When she learned that director Sam Mendes wanted her to read for the film, Bellucci thought she was up for replacing Judi Dench as M. “I just blurted out, ‘I’m not a girl, I’m a woman. I’m a mature woman. Do I have to replace Judi Dench?'” the actress said. “We have to start to respect women getting older. The real you comes out, and you can see it in the face,” she said. She also feels every woman goes on her own individual journey, so there’s no point worrying about fitting a mold. “I don’t want to be 20. Not at all. I want to know my story. How am I going to deal with getting older? I had my first child at 40, my second child at 45, and I play a James Bond girl at 50.” Actually, correction: “I am a James Bond lady,” she said.

"Little Traders" By Farid Nouisser
Every year around this time, Al Towayya Kindergarten transforms itself into a real live flea market with a multitude of vendors. Our little entrepreneurs gather their goods once a year to sell to friends, parents, and teachers alike. This has become an Al Towayya tradition, bringing dramatic role play to a whole new level. Dramatic role play is an integral part of the developmental process, allowing children to build their literacy, math, critical thinking, and social skills in a natural and purposeful way. The concept of "Little Traders" was brought about three years ago by the teachers of Al Towayya, as a creative means of educating the students about community helpers. The Source was invited to chronicle this exciting event, and exciting it was! The room was abuzz with little merchants busily peddling their wares to the eager customers. There were candies of all sizes and shapes, along with baked goods, frozen treats, traditional foods, and a wide selection of toys, books, and stationary supplies. They even had a photo booth, face painting and henna available. Numerous parents and family members went above and beyond in their efforts to create elaborate booths that the children proudly occupied. Although the object of "Little Traders" was to teach the youngsters all about the importance of business, as real money was being exchanged, very few of them (including my son) walked away with a tidy profit – most of their gain was either spent filling their bellies with irresistible sweets or simply giving their hard earned cash away to friends. Overall, the day was a smashing success and our hats go off to the incredible teaching and administrative team at Al Towayya for the outstanding organization that helped make "Little Traders" once again, a most memorable day.

tanding in a dilapidated hunting lodge, squeezed between a blacksmith on one side and a large family of gypsies on the other, a flickering bare bulb providing the only light, we all leaned forward in anticipation as the man in the centre of the room slowly pulled a string of glistening razor blades from his mouth. Transylvania had turned out to be the place of atmosphere and mystery that I had hoped for. I admit I am a big fan of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. to improve. We decided to retrace the journey of the hapless Jonathan Harker and take a sleeper train from Budapest in Hungary, across to Transylvania. If you are pushed for time, fly direct from Dubai International to Bucharest then take an easy two-hour train ride to Brasov. Our train was comfortable enough, but we had a rude awakening in the small hours as border guards hammered on the compartment door and shone torches into our bleary faces. When dawn arrived, I felt as though we had travelled in a time machine rather than a train. On the roads, overloaded carts bumped along, pulled by weary horses. We could see men and women working the fields with scythes. Pretty villages were nestled in the hills and we spotted gigantic stork
nests perched on the tops of chimneys and telegraph poles. This was not some plastic Disney recreation, this was the real thing. Our home for the week was a renovated farmhouse in Miklósvár, a village 20 kilometres north of Brasov, owned by Count Tibor Kálnoky, whose family has been living in the area since 1252. Profits from his holiday ventures are used to fund various local conservation and restoration projects. Count Tibor is still very much involved in the estate. You might find yourself sipping plum brandy with him by the fireside one evening. He charmed my daughter by catching a frog for her on a bird-watching trip, and I think she now has a few fantasies about contributing to the Austro-Hungarian bloodline. We were spoilt for choice with the huge

adults had been too busy relaxing under the apple trees to even notice that they were missing. Please don’t judge me, it’s just that kind of place.
Even the reluctant walkers in our family agreed to hike up the Varghis gorge to explore the bat-infested caves, where legend has it that the Saxon children stolen by the Pied Piper of Hamlyn emerged to populate the local area. Another, less fragrant trip took us to extremity-tingling sulphur caves. (Note: It is not a good idea to agitate the air inside the cave too much or to dip your head below the gas level as this will result in rapid suffocation and death!) The eggy smell and yellow-crusted walls were intense, so the children were not too disappointed when they were told that they would not be allowed to enter.
Transylvanians are proud of their Hungarian roots. Our knowledgeable guide spent many long car journeys answering our questions about the waves of Romans, Magyars, Saxons and Gypsies who make up the region’s complex history. Any questions about Dracula, however, were met with distain. Apparently, he is a fictional character created by a man who had never even been to Transylvania. So why are there bunches of garlic above the bedroom doors?
We felt very much part of everyday village life, and it was a joy to be wrapped up in the excitement of the arrival of a travelling conjuror, who performed in the estate’s hunting lodge. Our kids quite possibly went slightly feral: the parents among us showed a worrying lack of concern on being told that our offspring had been seen in a neighbouring village on the blacksmith’s cart, ‘helping’ him with his rounds. The Farmers return home from laboring on the land, using a wooden horse cart, a traditional transportation vehicle still used in countryside
Every day ended the same way; watching the cows make their lazy way through the village on their way home from a harddays grazing on the hills. We then retired to the cellars of the main house to enjoy a delicious candle-lit dinner. Some of my best memories are of long evenings spent chatting with the other fascinating guests. One of the earliest visitors, the UK’s Prince Charles, enjoyed it so much that he bought a nearby village and is renovating it himself. Proof that travelling to a land that time forgot comes highly recommended.
