Guest Editor’s Note! e’re now in March, which means it’s almost the end of our second school term (Yay!). With temperatures soaring high, school events also seem to be heating up. Across Al Ain and the Emirate, schools are wrapping up with fun days, concerts and Spring Fayres. For me and many other fellow students at Brighton College, we prepared in advance for these events. In the next few weeks we will be immersed in our studies but before we dig in, much of our focus will have been on our rock concert, ‘novel’ activities for World Book Day and the exciting Spring Fayre. This unique Fayre included well-known British songs, an upbeat maypole dance, arts and crafts booths, numerous fun games, raffles with exciting prizes, face painting and much more. I hope everyone enjoyed and participated in the many activities as much as I did.

In addition to the Spring Fayre, we recently experienced a full week of book emersion, thanks to Book Week at Brighton and wrapped up with a ‘Dress up as your favourite book character’, in celebration of International Book Day. We participated in a series of games, quizzes, debates, competitions, dressing up and lots and lots of reading! If you want to find out more about this exciting week, read our features inside the magazine.

On a slightly different note, Brighton College musicians were hard at work on our ‘School of Rock’ concert, where we preformed rock hits from the past and present. It was an interactive experience for the audience and a musical extravaganza for children, teens and adults alike. So as the flowers begin to bloom around Al Ain, Brighton College begins to pick up some speed, eager to reach the well-deserved break. I hope you’re just as excited as I am for the end our eventful second term.

ASK THE STUDENT What, in your opinion, is the most stressful thing about being in a high achieving international school? -Ruby Harrower Being a student at Brighton College, encourages me to achieve to the highest of my abilities and as such, I tend to stress easily. I am a student concerned by the number of children who have unprotected scrapes and injuries as a result of dayto-day school life. The other day, I scraped my knee; how do I ensure that my small scrape doesn’t transform into a major problem as a result of infection and improper care? Do you have any advice regarding this type of injury? Daisy Palmer

Thank your for such an excellent question. For active children, minor scrapes and cuts are a normal part of life. Preventing infection and aiding healing can be easily achieved by simply washing the wound with soap and water then keeping it clean and dry until it is healed. If you are worried that a cut is too deep, then it should be evaluated by a doctor. Always ensure that you are up to date with vaccines, including tetanus. The dress went viral on social media, originally starting from Tumblr questioning about the colour of the dress (And yes, it’s blue!). However, the majority sees it as white and gold. Cecilia Bleasdale, who bought the dress for her daughter Grace’s upcoming wedding, took the original photograph. She sent the image to the bride-to-be, who shared it with her groom. They were the first people to disagree over the dress's colours.

Woman asks for water during ‘rape bid’, jumps from window A 21-year-old Filipina jumped off the window of a first-floor apartment to escape a rape attempt and suffered broken ribs, a Dubai court heard. According to prosecution records, Pakistani driver, I.W., 28, lured the woman to accompany him to his office on the pretext of collecting some documents. In the office, he locked the door and allegedly tried to rape her. In the Court of First Instance on Wednesday, he was charged with attempted rape with the use of force. The woman said she accompanied I.W. to the Global Village around 5.30pm on November 9 last year. “He told me about an hour later that he needed to pick up some documents from his office in a building in Naif. I went with him,” she said in the prosecution investigation.

The accused, she claimed, went to the washroom and came out shirtless. “I realised he would harm me when he turned off the lights. I sent a message to my friend on his Facebook account seeking help.” The defendant then allegedly took off his clothes and tried to rape her. “I knew there was no way to escape but to trick him. I told him to move away from me for a while till I could catch my breath and prepare myself for him. I asked for a glass of water.” She then walked to the window and stepped on a chair. “I told him I would jump, but he just laughed. I opened the window and jumped off.” She said she fainted, and on waking up, found some people crowded around her. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was told she had broken ribs.

“She was crying and in severe pain. She could hardly speak.” A police officer said I.W. surrendered at the police station on the same day. “He claimed he did not do anything that could have made her jump off the window.” A Pakistani salesman, 46, said he was at his shop when he heard a thud outside. “I saw the victim lying motionless. The window from which she fell was open. The lights were on then but were switched off shortly later.” He said he saw the defendant coming out from the building, holding a woman’s purse and then dropping it near the victim. “He acted as if he was talking on his mobile phone. Some men tried to chase him, but he disappeared. Courtesy: Khaleej Times

Her Pakistani friend, 24, said he visited her at the hospital after receiving her message.

A major accident is being reported on E66 where a black SUV made impact with the central median on the highway and flipped over onto its side in Dubai. A second vehicle, a red saloon car, is also pulled over in front of Skycourts Residences, with several emergency vehicles on the scene controlling traffic in both directions, with one lane currently closed to vehicular traffic. The accident occurred just at the intersection of the new Emirates Road and the Dubai-Al Ain highway, heading towards Abu Dhabi. However, that, along with rubberneckers on both sides of E66 resulted in gridlock in the area. Meanwhile, several other accidents have been reported, creating jams for vehicles commuting to Dubai from Sharjah: a crash was reported on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, just after Al Nahda interchange, while another accident reported further down the same highway, opposite Global Village towards Abu Dhabi. PLASTIC 'BAGS'

More Than Just Groceries!

of wildlife from not only unnecessarily perishing, but disappearing from the face of the planet altogether.

n a frank and unsettling report, complete with harrowing photographs, we witness what is an urgent tragedy taking place in the desert, along the beaches, and in the mountains of the UAE. Camels, sheep, goats and cattle, as well as the protected Arabian Oryx, Sand Gazelles and other wildlife are dying after ingesting plastic.

The reality is that one in two wild camels die every year as a result of ingested plastic in the UAE. This is not only tragic, most important of all, it is PREVENTABLE! Far too often, shopping bags end up in the desert, thrown away carelessly by people who go on a picnic or by farm keepers. Mistaking them for food, camels eat those bags, which cannot be digested. Eventually, they calcify inside the camel’s stomach, blocking the intestines, thus causing the animal to suffer a long and painful death from starvation. As much as 60kg of calcified plastic has often been found inside a camel’s carcass.

As the images show, these animals are eating the plastic pollution left behind by visitors, travelers, dune and wadi bashers – and then choking on it, or starving to death because the plastic blocks their intestines. The pollution in the desert is already an outrage. The death of these innocent animals is inhumane, unnecessary and horrific. There has been a sharp increase in the number of animal deaths due to plastic pollution in recent years and although the Gulf region is considered to be a part of the developed nations of the world, the level of awareness regarding the devastation caused by excessive littering is lagging far behind the necessary requirements to save the threatened wildlife. Most people’s attitude is “Just drop it; others

are there to pick it up.” The country as a whole has to start a major education program on this and relentlessly prosecute violators if there is to be a drastic improvement in the very near future, and that improvement is in dire need if we are to save the many species

First manufactured in 1950s, shopping plastic bags take up to 400 years to decompose and, while they slowly degrade, the majority of plastic bags, basically made from petroleum, break up into small pieces releasing toxic harmful chemicals into the land and water. According to international reports, every year millions of plastic bags are not properly disposed of and end up as litter on beaches, parks, deserts, forests, in the wild or in rural and urban areas.

CAN YOU READ THIS?

I

f so, you are part of the privileged 74% of the world that can.

Unfortunately, this means that 26% of the world’s population is illiterate, 67% of which are women. By definition, illiteracy is the inability to read and write at a level suitable to function in society. As you read this, there are over 1.5 billion people living in the world who have probably never been lucky enough to read a book.

So, think about this – when did you last read a book from cover to cover? Have you read one in the past six months? If not, why? It is completely understandable that you find yourself too busy to sit down and read everyday, as modern life is hectic and can leave you with little spare time. Despite this, we are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by so many opportunities to engross ourselves in the world of literature; it seems ungrateful not to take advantage of this, doesn’t it? Literacy is not simply about reading books. We are part of a society that relies heavily on communication and the written word, making a high literacy rate imperative. Literate people are more employable and easier to train and illiterate employees will not have as much earning potential as someone who is literate. In developing countries, 42% of young girls do not attend school. As two 14-year-old girls writing this article, it seems completely inconceivable, as we have both received 11 years of full-time education. Whilst we would have been considered literate around the age of seven or eight, there are adults in the world who are nowhere near the level we were at at that age. Studies have shown that just one year of education could boost

the future salary of a young girl by 20%, which highlights the positive effects of becoming literate and the impact an education can have on your future life. Luckily for us, 97% of female youth in the UAE are literate, and as a result have a better chance of attending university, receiving a degree and then employment. Now, on to books! Did you know that World Book Day was on the 5th of March? If you are student or a teacher then you probably do! Every year, most schools celebrate

World Book Day in a variety of different ways. Some schools dress up as favourite book characters, some participate in bookrelated activities, and others, like us, are so enthusiastic about reading that we dedicated an entire week to our celebrations. While it is fun filling out crosswords about our favourite books every day, we haven’t really focused on why we read and how important it is to us. Why do we read? Is it for entertainment or to escape from everyday life? Or just to brag to your friends that you’ve read Pride and Prejudice three times? For most, it’s a mix of all three. To us, there is nothing more satisfying than closing that back cover of a 600 page book you’ve been reading for the last month and taking a few minutes, slowly departing from the character’s world to bask in the beauty of literature. You’ve got to admit, you just don’t get the same feeling when you log out of Facebook for the night. Of course, social media is a great literary

platform, but how do we find the balance between talking about books online and actually reading them? It seems that most of us – ourselves included - automatically turn to our various electronic devices when presented with free time in order to relax. What we often forget, is that reading is not always analyzing texts and the adolescent drama of reading classic novels, rather a great way to unwind and relax after a hard day’s work. It doesn’t have to be hours spent ploughing through a book that you simply do not understand or like - in fact, that is exactly what reading shouldn’t be.

easily accessible to all, we would have a world of thinkers who would actively work to make their society a happier more educated place. Reading is what makes us happy. When we are happy, we are better people.

Reading should be something you enjoy. Whether that’s reading a chapter a day, a chapter a week or a chapter a month. Whatever pace you read at, you’re reading nonetheless. If enjoyable reading to you is reading your childhood favourites over and over again, or actively seeking out unknown books to explore new worlds, do it! What’s stopping you? If we can create a society where reading is

The Benefits Of Prebiotics And Fiber In Your Diet

W

hat can you do to improve your digestive health? One of the most effective ways is to add prebiotics and fiber to your diet. Prebiotics and fiber can help to reduce bloating, decrease weight and generally make you feel better. Here are some benefits of incorporating these into your diet: IMPROVED DIGESTION Fiber is essential for good digestive health - your digestive tract depends on it. You can relieve bloating and constipation by adding good fiber into your diet. Prebiotics also stimulate the growth of good bacteria in your gut and this is essential to a wellfunctioning digestive system. When your digestive system is healthy it processes food and absorbs all of the nutrients more effectively. An unhealthy digestive system manifests in many ways and leads to issues such as bloating, constipation and diarrhea. Prebiotics and fiber are vital in ‘promoting gut health’, so try to incorporate them into your diet daily. Get your digestive system in order and keep these uncomfortable issues at bay. IMPROVED IMMUNITY Up to 70 percent of your immune system is located in your gut. If you want to be able to fight disease effectively, it is important to look after your digestive health. You can strengthen your immune system by helping the good bacteria in your gut do their job.

IMPROVED GROWTH OF GOOD BACTERIA Prebiotics help to keep your gut at optimum health by encouraging the growth of good bacteria and discouraging the growth of harmful bacteria. REDUCED BLOATING AND WEIGHT LOSS A healthy gut is important when you want to reduce bloating. Your digestive system has the important job of breaking down food, distributing nutrients and controlling satiety. The better it works, the more you will be able to control your appetite, avoid overeating and manage your weight.

REDUCED CHOLESTEROL AND RISK OF HEART DISEASE Foods that are rich in prebiotics are great for the heart and may help lower cholesterol. Our immune response is directly linked to the state of our digestive system; therefore, the stronger it is the better it will be at fighting disease. Prebiotics and fiber both help to improve gut health and

fight diseases such as bowel cancer, heart disease and diabetes. IMPROVED OVERALL HEALTH When you are processing food and absorbing nutrients efficiently and have strong immune system, you will avoid illness, as well as issues of bloating and constipation. A healthy and well functioning digestive system is essential to your daily energy levels and overall well being. TIPS ON IMPROVING YOUR DIGESTIVE HEALTH: • Add at least 30 – 40 grams of fiber a day and make sure to consume prebiotics regularly. Consume foods such as yogurt, oats, legumes or add a prebiotic supplement. • Boost your fiber intake by eating plenty of veggies, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. • Try to cut back on gluten, which for some people slows down the digestive system. If you feel sluggish and bloated when you eat gluten, reduce your intake. Try natural gluten-free options such as potatoes, rice, buckwheat and quinoa. • Drink plenty of water and add apple cider vinegar or lemon to water to stimulate digestive enzymes. • Chew your food properly to help activate digestive enzymes and improve digestive function. Ensuring that your food is truly broken down before swallowing makes it easier for it to pass through the digestive system. • Cut back on processed foods, especially those high in sugar - sugar makes the harmful bacteria in our gut thrive even more.

The unselfish dad's guide to

MOTHER'S DAY

A

successful Mother's Day depends not on the generosity of her offspring, but on the organisational skills of her other half. Unless your kids are freakishly selfless and competent, it’s a father’s responsibility to set the tone and corral them into an annual show of appreciation. So here’s your plan…

1. IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU I realise this is hard to take gents, but once per annum, your needs are not the world’s most important. This is a day that belongs to your children’s mother. She did the hard yards and now it’s payback time. 2. BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY Your own mum always told you this and, aptly, it’s doubly true on Mother’s Day. If you don’t make a fuss first thing, she’ll think you’ve forgotten. So get in her good books early. Let her have a lie-in, then tenderly wake her with the wafting smell of posh coffee, fresh-baked (OK, warmed) artisanal pastries, lovingly prepared eggs or whatever she considers a perfect morning meal.

18

The Source

3. GET THE KIDS ON THE CASE

6. NO COOKING ALLOWED

A shop-bought card is forgivable, especially if the kids help pick it and scrawl inside. But what she really wants is her ickle darlings to toddle in with some heart-melting, personalised tokens of adoration. So stock up on coloured card, glitter, crayons and other crafty whatnot and set up a mini sweatshop. It’s about time the work-shy dwarves started earning their corn.

Once your breakfast-in-bed duties have finished, there’s no time for slacking. It’s now your responsibility to sort lunch and/ or dinner. This will, of course, also include cleaning up the messy kitchen afterwards!

4. SAY IT WITH FLOWERS And not those withered carnations turning brown on a petrol station forecourt. Not ones you “foraged” from the garden/local park/a grave. We’re talking a proper, bright, spring-has-sprung hand-tied bouquet that will brighten the house up all week, with a soppy message scrawled in child-like script on the accompanying card. 5. NO HOUSEWORK ALLOWED Make it clear; this is her day off. It’s your turn to run the errands and do the chores, so she can put her feet up or hang out with the little tinkers.

7. GIFTS ARE A BONUS Lucky for your sanity and wallet, Mother's Day isn't really about pricey presents. It's about simple gestures and making her feel appreciated for the unsung heroic job she does. Flowers and card are a must. Feel free to throw in chocolates or smellies. If you want to suck up sickeningly, surprise her by booking a massage, manicure or spa sesh. But in no way buy her anything to do with actual mothering or domesticity. 8. DON’T FORGET YOUR ACTUAL MUM So busy lavishing your wife with love that you forgot your own mother? Make sure there’s a card and flowers there too. Just don’t ever buy the same card for your mum as you bought for your wife. 9. DON’T LISTEN WHEN SHE SHRUGS IT OFF “Oh, it's no big deal. Honestly, don’t worry. You don't have to get me anything.” This is a massive lie. Ignore it. It’s a trap to ensnare unsuspecting, overly-literal, non-mindreading men. There you have it. Happy Mother’s Day! And only three months till Father’s Day.

WHAT IS A MOTHER?

M O T H E R By: Farid Nouisser

ajestic and powerful is the gentle hand of a mother and nothing can compare to the warmth and tenderness of her infinitely accommodating heart.

pening the gates of this world for us selflessly, even before we are born and willing, without a second thought, to lay down her life for us at any given moment if need be – this is the miracle of a mother’s unconditional love! ouched by a mother we are never alone. She is the bank in which we deposit our aches and fears only to see these non negotiable currencies invested, compounded and later redeemed as hard transferable faith, success and prosperity of the flesh and spirit. elping us to see ourselves through the eyes of a mother is a gift beyond all bounty, for no other individual on earth experiences the love, joy, sadness, empathy, sympathy, and every other conceivable emotion that Moms do in the upbringing of their children. volving continuously through each stage of our development, with unparalleled empathy for every struggle we endure. She is the master of encouragement, driving us to achieve the impossible; to be the best we can be whilst applauding our every victory, whether big or small, with an effervescent pride that fuels perpetual, positive forward discovery.

esilient and rare is the love and compassion indigenous to mothers. A mother is God’s gift to mankind and no power on earth can or should ever attempt to break the bond between a mother and her offspring – AMEN!

LaAisha Lorick is a full time mom and wife, from South Carolina, USA. She is also a teacher and best of all, sharing her parenting expertise with The Source readers.

Confessions of a Stay At Home Parent Part II Terin Port tells of some of the struggles and revelations that she has had while adjusting to being a stay at home mom (SAHM). She just transitioned into the role of a full time stay at home parent this past August. In New Zealand Terin worked as a flexibly scheduled Neonatal Nurse and used to drop her eldest child off to nursery for about eight hours per week. She admits that staying home with her children without any sort of ‘break’ has been a bit of a learning curve, “I used to think I was a pretty carefree, relaxed person until you introduce toddlers to paint in my home, give a toddler any sort of high pitched instrument, or give a child some glue and glitter... I am really trying.” She also confessed to wishing that she could go to work for short periods, miss her children terribly for a few hours, and come home recharged to give her gorgeous kids her all. Terin finds that balance is helping both her 22

and her children to adjust. Therefore, after scheduling a bit of homeschooling activities, outdoor fun, meals, and tidying up, Terin also finds that it is equally important to pencil in some social outlets for all of them. “I know that I am a social person and so are the kids so it is so important to get out and join coffee groups and classes and go for trips to the shops and cafes... I find those to be like 'mental health' days. It would be so easy to stay at home but I know I would slip into a somewhat depressed state. Also, I found the children coped really well at the start but started to show me that they A) needed some space from me and B) needed some friends that they could bond with because they really missed their friends at home. Everyone is different but I know that we need that balance.” When asked how she felt overall about being a SAHM she replied, “Essentially I love being a SAHM because molding and raising children to be respectful, integral,

productive members of society is really the most important job and truly an honor. Also, financially it is not viable to put them into paid care on one income. So, I am coping and trying my best to provide Amalia and Levi with a balanced learning environment.” I can imagine that adjusting to being a stay home parent can be difficult, especially if you have been a working parent. Summers alone are huge adjustments for me. However, I can attest to the fact that Terin is adjusting on her own terms, which is the healthiest way. Her sense of humor, love-hate relationship with striving to be a modern day ‘pinterest mum’, and hands-on supportive husband is keeping her afloat. Never miss a call or text again while working at your computer Just in case you weren’t hearing enough dings, pings, and beeps from your various devices, now you can add one more to the mix. You may be able to get email, chat, and Facebook notification on OS X, but there are so many more alerts you miss out on when you are away from your iPhone. Plus, if you don’t use a Mac computer, you have even less options for syncing with your iOS device. Pushbullet is a syncing app that shows you all of the notifications you receive on your iOS devices right on your Mac or PC. Plus, it acts as a channel so you can share links, pictures, and more between devices. You’ll have to download both the Mac app (or Windows) and the iOS app to make the most use of the services. Once downloaded, log in either via Facebook or Google to connect all of your devices.

Next, configure the Mac app to enable Pushbullet notifications, allow universal copy-and-paste, and send iOS notifications to your Mac. Then, whenever you receive a notification on your iPhone or iPad, you will receive a notification on your desktop or laptop as well. Not just email or text messages. Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Skype. Anything you get a notification for on iOS will appear on your computer. The social-media site has come under fire for its lax controls against cyberbullying. Twitter has updated its rules to prohibit posting nude or sexually explicit photos without the subject’s consent.

The Leap is the third device BlackBerry has introduced since September. BlackBerry to Launch Four New Devices in 2015

BlackBerry announced a new touch-screen phone will be one of four devices it launches this year, as it bolsters its turnaround effort-—which is geared to selling mobile security software to enterprises—with new devices aimed at business and government customers.

The new policies targeting so-called revenge porn mark Twitter’s latest move to crackdown on cyberbullying after previous updates over the past few months, including a new way to flag abusive tweets and a streamlined method of reporting harmful content. “You may not post intimate photos or videos that were taken or distributed without the subject’s consent,” reads a line in Twitter’s “content boundaries” that was added Wednesday. The socialmedia site has come under fire for its lax controls against cyberbullying, but has recently moved to take a tougher stance against online harassment. Last month, CEO Dick Costolo admitted in a leaked memo that, “We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls.”

Smartphones and tablets are great tools to help you stay productive when you're away from the office. But compared to a laptop, most mobile devices have some major drawbacks that could hinder your productivity. That includes their limited file management capabilities. ES File Explorerstands out thanks to its intuitive interface and complete feature set. The app gives you easy access to your phone or tablet's file system so you can move, duplicate and delete files. And it integrates with cloud storage services, including Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, so you can back up your files to the cloud, and sync them among all your mobile devices. As an added bonus, the app offers advanced app-management tools that make it easier to organize, install and uninstall applications. File Explorer also includes a gallery mode so you can view your photos and images

FOR THE LOVE OF

READING

P

ublishing a magazine in the UAE has been both inspiring and rewarding but I will admit that it has not been an easy accomplishment. Riddled with challenges, the most important achievable goal in our daily work is to have the community not only grab one of our free copies every fortnight, but actually sit down and read it! The Source has risen to the occasion and in spite of the challenges we face in an ever evolving sedentary reading population, both globally and especially here in the UAE, we plow forward hoping that the art of reading will firmly establish itself in our community and beyond.

We are adamant about providing a fully bilingual publication due to the extremely high presence of UAE Nationals in our city, but have discovered that reaching these readers is the most difficult challenge of all. A long queue of eager fans anticipating a

first edition or signed copy by their favourite author is common place in the west but a rarity in the Arab world. The number of Arabs that frequent libraries is also considerably lower than its western counterparts and this number largely reflects the reading habits of a culture and its generations. A report released by The Arab Thought Foundation’s, Fikr in 2012, showed that the average Arab child reads “six minutes” a year in comparison to the 12,000 minutes its Western counterpart spends.

It also reported that an Arab individual, on average, reads a quarter of a page a year compared to the 11 books read by an American and seven books by a British person. “If we adopt the minimum average time that youths spend on the Internet, which is 365 hours per year, and compare this with the

average time an individual Arab spends reading, which is six minutes a year, then the difference between the two becomes clear, and the importance of the Internet in youths’ lives becomes apparent,” the report said. Soon after these statistics were released, both skeptical and furious debates took place on social media forums like Twitter, with people highlighting the number of challenges facing their society. Some comments suggested the introduction of e-books to encourage better reading habits at a university level. Others attributed the decline in reading to ineffective educational environments across the Arab region and families rarely visiting public libraries together.

social & community forum

Researched by: (LtoR) Charlie Blick, Tim Parkman, Hussain Mahdi, Lean Grant

Family trips to libraries are considered rare across the Arab world and although great efforts have been made in countries such as the UAE to create some of the finest public libraries, there is still a shortage of Arabs using these facilities. Another survey on reading habits in the Middle East in April 2011 showed equally depressing results. Only one in five read on a regular basis and among those under 25 nearly 65 per cent of the 3,667 questioned by Yahoo! Maktoob Research about one in three seldom or never read a book for pleasure.

The survey’s results showed similar reading habits across several countries. In an Arab League table of readers by nations, the United Arab Emirates placed fifth behind Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco and Iraq. In the UAE, just 22 per cent of people described themselves as regular readers. A general lack of educational opportunities in poor Arab countries can also add to the problem. Research for the Arab League region estimates that about 100 million people almost one in three - struggle to read and write. A 2011 UNESCO report found that in the UAE, one in 10 people is illiterate. Other factors to consider in the decline of reading can be attributed to people shunning the Arabic language in favor of English. There has been a steady decline in the appreciation of Arabic in recent years and students are failing to recognize the importance of learning their mother tongue. Today’s parents place a great deal of emphasis on English, thinking it will further their children’s careers and subsequently develop an indifferent attitude towards Arabic. Despite the benefits of implementing an English language teaching curriculum in elementary schools, it has created an era of culturally deprived children. Most of these children are not linked to the narrative beauty of their mother tongue’s literature which is indeed a very serious problem in regards to the preservation and further development of an extremely rich and powerful language.

ABU DHABI INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR

The 2015 Abu Dhabi International Book Fair celebrates its Silver Jubilee as it returns in May for the 25 edition. Brighton Book Week

ast week, Brighton College Al Ain celebrated a brilliant Book Week. The English Society, comprising of a group of talented Year 9 and 10 students, put together a fabulous array of activities for the whole school to enjoy, including student-made quizzes, literature treasure hunts, and professional author visits. Throughout the week, every class took five minutes out of their busy day to ‘drop everything and read’ as reading is D.E.A.R. to us all. Brighton College also hosted the Kinokuniya book fair from Dubai, which provided the students with an even more enriching reading experience. On Sunday, the students had the pleasure of having a workshop with the accomplished author of AlphaNumeric, Nicholas Forzy. He inspired the pupils with “anyone can create a book idea in ten minutes”. Using his experience, he taught Year 9 students about creating their own worlds for books. The groups also had an opportunity to ask him questions about writing and to get a signed copy of his book. The following day the students were given a thought-provoking topic to ponder during lunch - the question was, should Shakespeare be taught in schools? The pupils were marked on their persuasive language, relevant and interesting points regarding the topic, as well as creativity.

The Year 10 students were given a sneakpeak into Rehan Khan’s soon-to-be published book, The Last of the Tasburai 2, by the author himself. In addition to learning about characterization, the pupils were intrigued by the author’s enthusiastic presentation, and by how well read he was, as he cited the many books that had inspired him.

On Wednesday, the students were given an excellent opportunity to write for The Source Magazine and an insight into the production of a local publication. The pupils were given different roles, such as cover design, the inbox page, city highlights, the director’s note, a student interview and the feature story. This occasion was particularly fascinating for the students who are considering journalism as a future career. To experience the full extent of what a journalist goes through, the pupils were given a strict deadline of only two hours to fulfill their tasks. It was quite a challenge! World Book Day on Thursday was the highlight of the week as all students came to school dressed as their favourite book character. The Year 9 girls all came as characters from Peter Pan, including Charis Sung as Captain Hook, Jennifer Orthman as Peter Pan and Emily Maxwell as the tick-tock croc. Awards were given for best costume in each House group, and the best ‘extreme reading selfie’, as well as many more. Prizes included Magrudy’s book vouchers, boxes of chocolates and even signed copies of novels. Overall, the Brighton College students and teachers had an eventful Book week, filled with many enjoyable and enriching experiences, and lots and lots of reading! The Source

‘Book Week’ and all things ‘Fayre’ at Brighton By Farid Nouisser

As you will have noticed, there was a great deal of collaboration between the talented young minds at Brighton College and The Source for this issue of the magazine. Not only did it provide our hard working staff a well deserved breather, it offered an opportunity for the community to witness firsthand the outstanding work of a dedicated assortment of senior students put to the test of producing a magazine. We thoroughly enjoyed working with the aspiring journalists and media professionals during ‘Book Week’ at Brighton and marveled at the enthusiastic celebration of reading, writing and virtually all things literature. It was a time to retire electronic devices and rediscover the beauty of books along with some of the magnificent authors responsible for their creation. And if this was not enough of a climax, the annual Spring Fayre provided a grand finale for an outstanding time of achievement. March 14th was a picture perfect day at the college, as hundreds of parents, students, teachers and the Al Ain community converged on the campus to show their support for a worthwhile cause. The place was abuzz with local vendors of every sort flaunting their wares to a crowd of enthusiasts engorged in music, dance, and feasting. There were games to be played, prizes to win, faces to paint, horses to ride, arts and crafts and even an opportunity to sponge a teacher or two. The day, to say the least, was a massive success with thousands raised for The Red Crescent. The Source would like to show its appreciation for being included in these milestone events by sharing a collection of photos that tell the story best!

NEW YORK: The City of Dreams Two aspiring Brighton College journalists seek to capture the essence of New York through individual experiences. By: James Shipton and Heath Hollingsworth

W

hen thinking of New York City, one invariably wanders off into the realm of imagination. With each visit to New York, I find that time has a way of flying by far too quickly. History, Economy and Modernity all come together, creating a hodgepodge of culture,

and a symbol of contemporary times. Times Square, Broadway, 5th Street, each name rings with the memory of an eternal legend. Truly, New York City is something special; a city like no other. New York - An Urban Paradise. The skyscraping towers ripping through the glorious sky, the bustling business centre of America, flawlessly flying high and lest we forget the Statue of Liberty – famous beyond compare. Ellis Island and the Empire State building provide a staple of tradition bursting with pride and history. In fact, the entire place is one huge landmark! The city was first given its illustrious title 350 years ago, when the English conquered the Dutch colony of 'New Netherland' and named the land after the Duke of York. New York City and the surrounding area continued to play an important role in American history. In 1792, the renowned

my world New York Stock Exchange was founded. The city continues its impressive legacy today as the home of the United Nations. Some of the most influential individuals from around the world gather here to tackle issues that affect us all. When Brighton College pupils - including me - visited NYC, the weather tried its best to dampen our spirits but nothing was about to spoil this fantastic experience, least of all, noncompliant weather! The temperature dropped 15 below freezing but the excitement and pulse of the city kept us invigorated and warm. Broadway gave us a glimpse of shows like Les Miserable and Matilda, with world class performers blowing audiences away with their daily show stopping performances. Times Square, a name everyone knows and the backdrop in countless movies, sends a shiver of amazement throughout my body. When I stood in the centre of Times Square, it felt like I was at the centre of the earth and the planet was spinning around me. While in New York, we visited the United Nations building and passed a live meeting of UN officials, which we eventually discovered to be the 7379th Security Council meeting. Multitudes of residents come to New York, seeking their future in the big city. And why shouldn't they? New York City is closest to some of the best universities the United States has to offer, as well as being home to some of the greatest landmarks, and best of all, my own brother and sister live there. If you want to set yourself up for success, New York City may be the place for you. After all, “if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere! The food was undeniably delicious; especially the pancakes for breakfast with luscious, lavalike syrup. The portions were unbelievable in size and the hot food filled our stomachs with

a much needed comfort. Spending a week in a new environment with fresh and inspiring surroundings created an exciting challenge and the end result was an educational experience that prepared us for other new adventures alongside our friends. When thinking of New York, I inevitably always return to one of its most memorable features – the diversity of culture! 37% of New York's residents are from another country in the world. New York is far better off, in my opinion, as a result of this cultural mixing and one direct spinoff and blessing is the endless variety of delicious foods found everywhere. I love food, and the fact that Indian spices, French delicacies and Italian pastas can all be found on the same street is a miracle for any foodie. New York represents globalisation on a wide-scale, indicating to the world-community that the Earth and its inhabitants have changed, and are still changing from the old lifestyle of rural living. If we can connect, and establish relationships with as many different types of people as there are types of food, life is sure to be more appetizing! The week we spent in New York changed our lives more than we could have imagined. The heritage and the sense of camaraderie brought us together as friends rather than classmates. I doubt any of us will ever forget the memories we now cherish. NYC is truly the city of dreams!

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

By Paula Hawkings

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?
