In This Together

B

efore anything else, I want to thank all our Featured Pros for coming together during this profoundly challenging time in our lives. It most certainly has not been

easy, and many of us continue to struggle as we slowly get back to normal. It’s hard to believe that it has been over a year since the start of this pandemic, but as we start to open back up, I hope we remember what is most important to us – each other. In this issue, we have collaborated with our highly sought-after vendors to create more than just inspiration for your wedding but continuing to educate couples on things like “Invitation Do’s and Don’ts” on page 42 and “Wedding Trends that are here to stay post Covid-19” on page 66. We are happy to feature some of our favorite weddings from our Featured Pros, whether they are small intimate gatherings or larger celebrations -we are so glad to prove that love cannot be stopped. I am thankful to every one of our Featured Pros for trusting in me to create something unique and different. Most of all, I’d like to thank my husband, Cody. Without the love and support from him, this magazine would not be possible. The Southern Social is so much more than just a wedding magazine, and my heart is whole knowing that I am not in this alone. We are in this together.

Selecting the style you want for your wedding can play a significant role in your budget. Your style is a great way to show off your personality as a couple. Think about the colors, the venue and what time of the year you want to say your “I dos.” Don’t get consumed with “traditions” and trying to please others. Your wedding is about you and your partner, not anybody else. Make your wedding day your own.

BRING THE KIDS LEAVE THE HEADACHE The bride and groom should have a wonderful experience on their wedding day. It should be a time spent together celebrating this ultimate expression of love. But fortunately, or unfortunately, you cannot table your parent responsibilities during wedding planning or on your wedding day. However, you can reduce your stress, be the couple of honor, and share memorable moments with your children with the proper preparation. Black-Tie Babysitting is here to help. We have exclusive packages customized to the needs of a wedding couple with kids. We understand your wedding is an all-day affair for your bridal party, but on average, for marrying couples, it has been a long 13 to 18 months. Black-Tie Babysitting does offer a Mommy Bride-to-Be package that takes care of your children during appointments with wedding vendors, dress fittings, and other pre-wedding activities.

OPAL AND ONYX PHOTOGRAPHY

Pro Tip

Incorporate a special time with your child if you know they will not make it through the ceremony. Our bride arranged a pre-photo wedding shoot with just her boys in the bounce house they rented for the wedding. Based on the behavior of her youngest at the rehearsal dinner, she decided that he would not be able to sit through the ceremony. By planning this special time pre-wedding, she created a moment that was equally as memorable as him being in the ceremony.

Have you been wondering how to keep breakouts at bay for your wedding? Stressing over what skin care products you should be using or when to try new treatments? Don’t worry! I had the opportunity to chat with House of Tesla Owner and Lead Makeup Artist Halley Hamer about how to address your wedding day beauty concerns. As an expert artist herself, she’s well versed in what your skin needs ahead of time for an optimal glow. BRIGHTEN YOUR EYES

Do you feel like hair shampooing days are a chore? Do you have to schedule it out and then dread it? Kevin Murphy’s Fresh Hair gives you an extra day or two of fresh hair. This is by far my favorite dry shampoo on the market. It won’t leave your hair feeling grimy or built up. It’s lightweight and suitable for all hair types and colors. Pro tip: Never wash your hair the day of your wedding. I use this product on all of my brides, so I’ve got you covered. So, sit back, smell the roses, and enjoy another day of fresh hair!

One of my favorite looks is a bright, clean, neutral eye. This pencil has CHANGED the game. It’s a nude, waterproof, extra soft kohl pencil that brightens and opens your eyes immediately. This product magnifies your eyes in real life and in professional photography for a natural or ultra-glam look. It’s suitable for all skin tones and types and is my favorite everyday and wedding must-have!

Being a makeup artist for bridal, weddings, and photoshoots, I have found we can apply products first to prevent makeup from breaking down. These steps will ensure you have a beautiful, long-lasting face of makeup without the cake. The only cake we want on your big day is your wedding cake! First, start with clean skin. Moisturize for your skin type. Second set with a thin layer of translucent powder over areas that tend to get oily or areas that seem like foundation move around or doesn’t last throughout the day. Then set with a setting spray. My ALL time favorite is Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. Then apply your normal makeup routine; eyes, primer, foundation, concealer, setting spray.

Mac Cosmetics 24hour Eye Base has always been my saving grace! From the tears you will shed on your special day to the most sensitive, watery eyes, this base will keep your eyeshadow on until you physically remove your eye makeup! I can walk away knowing your makeup won’t budge no matter how hard you cry.

DAY OF PAPER S I N C E R E LY , A D D I S O N

CARRYING YOUR INVITATION DESIGN THROUGH TO YOUR WEDDING DAY

When I first began designing wedding invitations, one of my customers mentioned that they wanted to create a “wedding brand”. As I would when creating business branding items, we nailed down a color palette, perused fonts until we found the perfect ones, and created a logo with the couple’s initials and wedding date. From there, every design choice we made starting with the save the dates and invitations, all the way to the custom cocktail napkins used at the wedding, were a perfect match to their wedding brand. We used their logo on the invitations, and again on their menus and programs. Each paper, ink, and ribbon color we selected was a perfect match to the color palette that we continually referenced. This brand design was a great checkpoint to make sure every detail of the wedding had a cohesive look. Although taking the time to create a wedding brand is not necessary, it is nice to have a solid foundation to keep you focused on creating a cohesive wedding look! When working on the “day of ” wedding items, such as seating charts, signage, table numbers, and place cards, refer back to your invitation design. Use the same fonts, colors, and overall theme to continue your “wedding brand” that Hover your phone

invitation to be on a clean white card, we decided to play with color and use white ink on green stock for their other items! The green cards on the gold plates really popped, while still having a very formal feel. We used gold wax seals to create a seating chart on a large vintage mirror and added lots of greenery to really tie together the color scheme.

intimate and romantic. You get a quiet moment to exchange gifts, savor the emotions without a crowd, and even share a few special vows just between the two of you. Just the two of you, and really – isn’t that what the day is all about!

2.

A FIRST LOOK WITH YOUR DAD. A Father seeing his daughter for the first time in her wedding gown is one of the unique gifts you could give your dad on your wedding day. It allows him to take it all in, savor the moment, and realize his baby girl is no longer five years old. The tears, the heartfelt gratitude of the person you’ve become, and the pride that exudes in these few moments will be etched forever in both of your hearts.

3.

A FIRST LOOK WITH YOUR BRIDESMAIDS. These are so much fun! The anticipation, the cheers, and the joy that explodes when they see you – it takes the cake! These friends are there to be your total hype squad, your cheering section, and nothing makes a girl feel good about herself more than the look on her bridesmaid’s faces when they see her for the first time.

Maybe you still want a bit of “traditional,” which we totally understand and love as well. You can always capture a “First Touch” - where the couple stands on opposite sides of each other or side by side on a corner wall to where you can reach around and hold hands for a few moments. Say a prayer together, take a breath, and then let

oth born and raised in Sacramento, Sophia and Kevin met as young children whose families were connected through various inner circles.

While Sophia and Kevin were never close acquaintances as children, fate would bring them together. Sophia attended the University of California, Berkley, majoring in Business with a minor in Journalism. Kevin also attended Berkley with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Business. Luck would have it that the two met in their Junior year during a mutual Business class on campus. The two were assigned on the same group project, where they quickly discovered their connections. Months following their first interaction, they began dating and fell madly in love. The two loved the outdoors and often loved spending weekends in Napa and Sonoma. As graduation approached, each of them took jobs in entirely separate parts of the country. Kevin moved to Silicon Valley to work for a new technology start-up, and Sophia moved to Austin, Texas, to be a writer for The Daily Dot. Both Sophia and Kevin took great pride and passion with their work and were each wildly successful. After only one year of being in the workforce, Kevin relocated to Austin to be with his love. Kevin soon began working as a software developer for another Austin tech start-up. Sophia started her own company specializing as a freelance writer for major blogs such as Vogue, Martha Stewart, and Cosmopolitan. The two of them loved Austin, as it reminded them much of their home state. After six years of dating, Kevin proposed to Sophia during a weekend trip back in one of their favorite spots together in wine country. While they loved California, they decided to host their big day back in their new home state of Texas. During many different venue tours, they couldn’t find the right venue for them. They wanted to marry outside and were looking for a venue that embodied their love for the outdoors and nature. After weeks of putting wedding planning on hold, Kevin had to make a trip to Dallas for several work meetings. Because Sophia was a freelancer, she joined Kevin on his trip and decided to stay the weekend and explore the city. Their love for the outdoors led the both of them to the Dallas Arboretum. While there, the two of them fell in love and knew then this was the place they would marry. Their shared passion for wine, the outdoors, gardening, fashion, work, and

INV ITATION DO’S AND DON’TS B R O W N F OX C R E AT I V E As a stationery designer, I’m frequently asked how to handle certain etiquette situations by clients — which rules to keep, and which to break. I’m here to help answer common questions about what stationery etiquette rules you should hold and which ones you can toss! The type of event must first be considered, as well as what your families are like and who you are as a couple before determining your do’s and don’t. Is your wedding formal or informal, oldschool or modern? Do you and your fiancé love traditions, or break away from the mold? The answers to these questions will set the tone for how you should handle your wedding invitations.

DON’T DON’T Forget the attire. Use informal addressing styles; this is a formal event! Be afraid to interject color into your invitation suite.

Worry about attire. It’s a casual event, noting attire isn’t necessary. Use formal addressing styles, unless you really want to. Be afraid of color. Shy away from playful wording.

MRS. PLANNER

IT TAKES A TEAM From the venue to food to décor and music, when you begin browsing the talent this industry has to offer, there are quite a few things to consider. Weddings are a special occasion where each part is important, and when professionals take on too many parts, the success of the event may be affected. Hiring a Wedding Planner to assist with vendor relations can lead to the most cohesive vendor team which is the secret to the success of any wedding.

CAPACITY

CREATIVITY

Just like your guest count fitting in the perfect venue, a professional should focus on the right number of clients per year. What number makes sense to give you the attention your wedding requires? Venue Managers have several spaces and dates to book out to hit sales goals. So, when your Wedding Planner teams up with these Venue Managers, your planner can ensure all personal details discussed throughout the planning process are not overlooked. Even when the venue requires attention, you and those details are still covered by your Planner. Together, this team ensures the spaces are set, clean, and ready to go.

The vision you have for your wedding may consist of lush florals, soft candlelight, or unique pieces that represent you perfectly. The installation of floral and décor can be quite a large job. When this part is rushed, or done for the first time on such an important day, things may go wrong. Placement, rigging, hanging, and troubleshooting the wind are all things a professional can cover for you. While setup is taking place, other vendors are arriving around them. Sound checks happen and everyone is getting dressed. When something little runs off course it is important that setup still continues, while your hired Planner works with vendor check in, setup review, and handles issues where attention is needed. Together, this team is covering the unforeseen instead of worrying about so much by themselves.

When it comes to one of the things guests remember most, there is no room to skimp. Food needs to be served warm, and be delicious. So, as your Catering Captain oversees prep and service staff to bring the perfect plate to your guests, your Wedding Planner can help show where that gluten free, dairy free, or any other dietary restricted meals are going based on the organized seating chart completed together in planning. Since the catering team meets the VIPs that same day, it’s helpful when your Planner shares the parents’ and wedding party’s tables so they are served first. PASSION Creating a playlist for your style is a talent in itself. Reading the crowd and making the right calls can keep a party going, or if experience is lacking here, it can clear a dance floor pretty quickly. So, since we hear our couples want that big celebratory party with those that they love the most surrounding them, talented Wedding Bands and DJ’s will help them do just that. Keeping the event timing, helping the wedding party down the aisle, preparing the cake table for cake cutting, or lining up a grand exit for your departure gives an idea of how your Planner helps these groups do what they do best. Together, this team keeps your event running smoothly.

It is pretty clear all details matter when it comes to your wedding, so hiring the right professionals to focus on their specific jobs, your special event will shine. We would love to share our vendor recommendations with you, and work as the team liaison overseeing the important details of your event. Let’s Plan!

Wedding Photography Styles Text by

L AU RE N A L L E N

You’ve said yes to forever with your favorite person, and wedding planning has begun. One of the essential parts of the wedding planning process is finding a photographer to capture your day and images that you and your loved ones will look at forever. When you start looking for your photographer, you may find it challenging to make a decision because there are so many different photography styles. Choosing a style before booking a photographer is crucial so you can rest assured that you will like the photographs you will have to remember your wedding day. But how do you choose a style, and what do different styles look like? We have found one of the best ways to narrow down your favorite photography styles is by looking through wedding magazines and searching social media accounts of different photographers you are considering, and saving your favorite photos! Going on Pinterest and creating a board for your favorite images to be compared side by side is an easy way to begin. The more photos that you add, the more you’ll start to see trends in the images you are saving. Pretty soon, you will come to learn the look and feel that best suits your ideal wedding photographs! When you start looking at wedding photographers, you will find their style is displayed through their social media accounts. Some may be dark and moody, some are light and airy, some are candid, some are editorial, and then there are ones somewhere in between. We know it can seem overwhelming and hard to put words to exactly what style you are looking for in a photographer. We have asked some of our featured photographers to describe their personal photography styles to help you put a name to the wedding photography styles you love.

e capture moments with artistry and describe our style as luminous and refined. We are film format and digital photographers whose approach is a mix of journalistic and editorial. We believe that blending the two makes us able to capture candids and provide timeless photos for our couples. We pride ourselves on being one of the rare few photographers who still use film as the preferred medium. Our photography style is more than just a “look.” It’s about feeling. We always say that if we capture emotion throughout the day and we can bring our clients back into feeling those moments from their wedding day as they look through their images. We have done our work well. We love pouring passion into unique weddings, photographing incredible clients and their beautiful stories. follow me @albaroseco

Fine art photography is all about emotion and authentically documenting people in their environment in such a way that it is not forced but more so slowly peeling behind layers to tell their story as it unfolds. Being raised with film photography as a child has allowed me to appreciate the not so much immediate satisfaction of seeing an image behind a camera. It’s much more of a feeling. Knowing my light and subjects and what is needed to truly get the best product every time my hand touches the shutter. Dessert Dreams Text by

Are you looking for inspiration for something sweet for your wedding? Gone are the days for just a simple, white-tiered cake.

It’s time to get creative. Dessert bars are a popular choice and

guest you might have. The dessert table is usually the most frequent hot spot of your reception, aside from the bar, of course. There is no limit to what kind of sweets you can serve. Mini pies, cheesecake shooters, brownie bites, pudding, whatever your heart desires! Keep your sweets in line with the theme and style of your wedding. If you are getting married in the fall, maybe try pumpkin-flavored mini pies. Fresh strawberry cheesecake would be perfect for a lovely spring wedding. Mix it up with a cake and mini desserts. Add height and textures to your dessert bar. Ask your florist if they can provide ex-tra florals not only for your cake but for decoration as well. You can even display your desserts on a fun cart, vintage furniture, or even funky tables. Accessorize with candles, frame your cake. De-sert bars are such a great way to give your guests a great experience. Let the taste testing begin! MICHAEL BUSH PHOTOGRAPHY

BRIK BRIDES

Mommy & Me Photographs by R ACHEL EL AINE PHOTOGR APHY Text by MEL ISSA SHOOK

RIK Venue celebrated its 5th anniversary in April 2021. Owner Lynsie Blau and Director of

Events Christy Cleveland wanted to do something special for their past brides and bring them back to the venue. The idea, “Mommy & Me,” came about as a way to honor their past BRIK brides who are mamas or about to be mamas. They reached out to Rachel Elaine Photography; with her being a mama herself, they knew that she would create some exceptional photographs for their brides to cherish for a lifetime. After the announcement went public, their fifteentime slots filled up in less than twenty-four hours. Each mama could choose five edited images as a gift for them being such amazing women and mamas or soon-to-be mamas. BRIK considers their couples a family, and they were so honored to meet the kiddos of some of their past BRIK brides and celebrate their BRIK mamas-to-be.

“We loved having them back in the venue, reminiscing on where they took photos on their wedding day and recreating some pictures with their kids. We love giving back to our brides, and this was a unique way to honor them for Mother’s Day 2021!” Says Christy.

WHITE ORCHID PHOTOGRAPHY

PLANNING YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION I’m a big fan of engagement sessions for a few reasons. Firstly, they allow you to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. Secondly, they let you showcase your personalities, both as a couple and as individuals, in a more casual setting that is significant to the two of you (and even include pets!). Some of the most asked questions I get as a photographer are around planning the engagement session. Specifically, what to wear, where to go, and when to shoot! My advice to couples is:

1.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT TIME

The best time to begin shooting your session is about two hours before sunset. Shooting at this time gives that perfect golden hour lighting. I prefer to shoot when the sun is lower in the sky to avoid harsh shadows and bright sun patches. The first two hours after sunrise is also an ideal time to shoot if you’re a morning riser!

2.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT LOCATION I love when couples choose a location for their session that complements their wedding. For example if you’re planning a chic, elegant wedding, it may be fitting to take your engagement portraits among the classic architecture downtown, while a local park or flower-filled fields may be more fitting for a couple planning a more rustic affair. Regardless, the best session locations are often meaningful places to you. If you have a pet that is going to be included in your photos, make sure to choose a spot that is pet friendly.

3.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT OUTFIT When picking outfits I recommend keeping in mind the word “complement” rather than “match.” Choose color-families, such as pastels, neutrals, or jewel tones. This way your outfits will look nice together in photos, but won’t be exactly the same. Use your outfits to tell a stor y about your personalities. Play with var ying fabrics and colors to make you feel the most comfortable and beautiful in front of the camera. Pick two outfits for an engagement session: a more formal outfit and a casual outfit.

We all know that your wedding day is all about you as a couple, right? In today’s world of weddings, it’s also important to consider your guests when making your wedding day decisions. Your wedding is the party of your life, and you are inviting your most beloved family and friends to be with you on your day. It’s so important to make sure they leave feeling special and, most importantly, loved. It’s a wedding, the day all about celebrating love! WEDDING TRENDS THAT ARE HERE TO STAY POST COVID-19 As we look forward to weddings in 2021 and beyond, what we know for sure is that they will look different. The novel coronavirus has completely reshaped the wedding industry and altered the way event professionals and brides envision their big day. While many trends in 2020 were born out of necessity, there are several that are here to stay. This year, our brides are focused on being more intentional when planning their ceremony and reception and are especially concerned with personalization and their guests’ experience.

A

fter meeting on the metro in New York City, the couple gradually fell for one another and began dating. Their

intimate COVID wedding celebrates the landmarks of their love. In virtually every part of the day, there are subtle nods to the couple’s story. Of course, the invitation suite and table numbers depict iconic New York markers, and if you look closely, you can even find metro tokens from the year they met. A train whistle seating chart invites guests to find their destination, and mini cheesecakes help guests indulge in the opulence of New York. The couple’s signature cocktails, the New York Sour and the Manhattan, not only reference their home state - but they also feature a special spirit, Woodford Reserve. This is significant because friends know the groom as Mr. Reserved, and Woodford Reserve became his trademark bourbon. In the same turn, because the groom started using “Sweet Pea” as his pet name for the bride, sweet pea flowers are sprinkled throughout the bouquets and floral arrangements. And at the end of the day, the couple’s farewell is rooted in their beginning - with a train ride. With the natural disasters Texas experienced the week prior to this event, several adjustments were made at the last minute. This impacted the wedding party apparel, florals, rentals, guests, and even the venue. But with a powerful creative team, alternative options were rapidly sourced, and the event came together in a more remarkable way than initially imagined.

Things I have Learned from Being a Mother of the Bride Text by MEL IS S A Photographs by

For over a decade, I have witnessed countless weddings, watching the personal and sometimes dramatic relationships between mother of the bride and daughter, the bride. In many situations is more so a lack of communication or lack of understanding. We sat down with Podcast Host, Coaching Partner, TV Personality, and Mom Motivator Demi Austin-Thomas, for an up-close and personal view as a recent Mother of the Bride herself.

I encourage parents to set boundaries to maintain a healthy relationship with their adult children.

illian and Lev met on a Thursday night in January of 2016. They both attended a concert at a venue called The Pageant in St. Louis. They were there with different groups of people, but little did they know they had mutual friends between their groups. After spending some time socializing and dancing, Lev eventually came over to Jillian and struck up a conversation with her. “He was so charming and absolutely hilarious. I felt like I could talk with him for hours.” Says Jillian. They spent the rest of the evening chatting and exchanged numbers before parting ways. They quickly made plans to see each other the following weekend. And here they are… 5 years later as husband and wife! On December 26, 2019, Lev proposed to Jillian while spending the weekend at a cabin in Arkansas with her family. Jillian recalls, “It was dark, and my family and I were making s’mores in the front area of the cabin. I had no clue that he and my father were busy setting up the proposal on the back deck!” Lev summoned everyone to the deck, and Jillian was utterly stunned at what she saw. Lev was waiting for Jillian at the bottom of the stairs with a trail of rose petals, standing in a heart shape of LED lights, with illuminated letters that said “MARRY ME” set up on the back railing. Jillian walked down the stairs, and Lev knelt down to propose with the most beautiful ring. I”n that moment, it all seems like a blur, but I do remember I said ‘YES!’” After their engagement, they were so excited to start planning their wedding! They knew they would have a few challenges to overcome along the way. Their vision for their wedding was to have a perfect blend of our religions, cultures, and traditions. Lev is Jewish, and Jillian is Christian. Lev is Russian. Jillian is American, and not to mention Southern! They spent many hours educating themselves and educating each other on traditions that were most important to them. With the help of their family and friends and their amazing team of vendors, they created the perfectly blended wedding of their dreams!

OUR ADVICE Get a wedding planner! It is worth every penny. Write down your top 3 things that are most important to you and your fiancé and compare your lists. You may be surprised at what the other writes down! Focus on these things first, and don’t skimp on these items if you can. Make your wedding unique to you as a couple.

The style of their wedding was Traditional Elegant. Their theme words that they used throughout the design process were elegant, classy, and romantic. The colors were blush, beige, dusty rose, and lots of white. Gold was the primary accent color used for the table numbers, candles, chargers, and Chiavari chairs. Their chuppah and seating chart were made out of clear acrylic, which they loved! Jillian and Lev wanted to use a lot of candles and uplighting around the perimeter of the room to create a warm and elegant ambiance. ‘It was truly romantic!” One of the unique things about their wedding Jillian says, “Was that we had an authentic Russian family-style dinner at our reception. Our guests absolutely loved it!”

ow the couple first met will depend on who you ask. While in high school, Logan needed a ride home one afternoon and Kathryn’s brother offered him a lift. So, technically first met in the back of Kathryn’s dad’s car. Kathryn, however, does not remember this, so she tells everyone they first met at a Rangers game. Logan came home from college, and her brother invited Logan and Kathryn to a game. They connected instantly as if they had been best friends for years. Kathryn knew that night he was very special and unlike anyone she had ever known. In the summer of 2018, the couple and their golden retriever Ellie headed down to Corpus Christi for a weekend getaway. They spent their time touring the city and having fun at the beach. On the last day of their trip, Logan took them to the beach at sunset. He set up their camera on a tripod and told Kathryn he couldn’t figure out what was going on with the settings and asked if she could fix it. When Kathryn turned around, Logan was on one knee, and Ellie had a sign around her neck that said, “Will you marry my Daddy?” Kathryn was in complete shock as she did not see it coming at all! When it came time to plan the wedding, Logan and Kathryn wanted to incorporate details that were meaningful to them as a couple. Family means everything to them, and they wanted to honor their families in as many ways as possible. Instead of

having a bridal party, they asked their closest family members to get ready with them on their wedding day and to be by their side throughout the day. Kathryn’s brother and cousin gave the toasts, Logan’s uncle said a beautiful blessing over the food, and the immediate family sat at the head table with the newlyweds. Being surrounded by the family who helped shape the couple into the people they are today made the day even more special. Two items Kathryn will cherish forever are her bridal robe and purse. Her grandma’s hand-sewed lace from Kathryn’s mom’s wedding dress onto her bridal robe. Her mom also passed down the purse she used for her wedding that Kathryn’s grandma made for her. These two items were absolutely beautiful and tied into the day perfectly. Picking colors for the wedding was very easy. Logan’s favorite color is blue, and Kathryn always wanted one of her wedding colors to be burgundy. Since the wedding was in the fall and the couple wanted their wedding to feel romantic, they decided on a dark navy blue and burgundy. The most memorable part of their wedding day was the moment right after we were announced as husband and wife. “We had waited two and a half years for that moment, and I felt nothing but pure joy. You can literally see the joy on my face in all the photographs taken after our first kiss!” Says Kathryn. They immediately went to the bridal suite to be alone and to take everything in. “That first moment together as husband and wife was truly very special and a feeling that is unlike any other!”

THE VENUE Villa Antonia is unlike any other venue the couple had seen in Texas. The first time they visited, the couple brought Kathryn’s parents with them, and they instantly fell in love with the venue before the tour even started. At the end of the tour, they all said at the same time, “This is it. There was nothing we had to think about; it just felt right.”

ruthi and Nick first met at The University of Texas at Austin in 2014, when she was a freshman and Nick was a sophomore in college. On their first date on January 16, 2014, the couple bonded over their love of tennis, the outdoors and shared childhood experiences. As time passed, they graduated together, set up their future careers, and traveled around the world, eventually getting engaged in the Maldives! Exactly seven years later, Nick and Sruthi tied the knot at The Springs Event Venue in McKinney. Their theme is an Indian-American fusion, with maroon and gold as their colors, and Bollywood music playing during the reception and some American pop.

en and Frances met in driving school when they were in high school. Their first meeting was nothing special, and they did not get along very well, but fate had other plans. Four years later, they met again, working the same part-time job while in college. This second meeting was fate because they hit it off and began dating soon after. For the past seven years, Ben and Frances have been going and growing through life together, tackling college and young adulthood with one another. After Frances finished graduate school, the couple went on a whirlwind trip to Europe, where they had the pleasure of visiting Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, Rome, and Florence. Florence would end up being the most special of places for the couple. On a perfectly starry night while there, Benjamin asked Frances to start their forever by getting on one knee and asking her to marry him. The couple says they have always known they would get married. When Frances envisioned her wedding day, she saw a romantic, all-white venue. She wanted their florals to have an organic yet romantic feel to feed into her romantic aesthetic for the day. Their color palette was very dainty and romantic, with shades of mauve, dusty rose, burgundy, gold, champagne, and navy blue. The couple decided to add candles to their decor to help bring some intimacy to the romantic wedding of their dreams. Something important to the couple is food! They are both self-proclaimed foodies, so they wanted to make sure their guests had great food that everyone would enjoy. Ben and Frances brought a little fun to their romantic wedding by bringing in a neon sign and marquee letters to light up their night. Something unique about their wedding was their DIY wedding stationery. Frances loves the feel of cotton paper and the elegant look of hand-torn paper full of delicate script and envelopes sealed with a wax seal.

WE ARE SO HAPPY WE invested in a day of/month of coordinator! We were stress-free during our wedding day, and we had so much fun because we weren’t worried about any of the wedding logistics! Our guests had such a blast as well, seeing how much fun we were having! For any brides that are still on the fence about hiring a coordinator, just do it!

oslyn and Juanyta both attended a meetup dinner event on January 20, 2018. Neither was prepared for magic that would change their lives that night. Both women talked easily with everyone in the group, but somehow, they kept returning to each other and resuming an easy, one-on-one conversation. They exchanged details such as their hometowns, colleges, careers, hobbies, and so on. It was like a first date, without the anxiety. After that evening, their bond grew stronger and even stronger over time. Roz and Juanyta grew to love and cherish one another. Vulnerabilities were revealed, growth was mandated, and challenges were accepted. They knew their road would be hard, yet they were determined to persevere and lean on the love they had for each other. By September 2019, Roz and Juanyta knew they wanted to commit to each other. But they were unsure if God was committed to their love, too. So, they came up with a plan. They would undergo a mutual fast-- from each other—and pray to God for His guidance and direction. They would not see each other nor call or text until God revealed His answer. After a week of soul-searching, they would meet to discuss His revelations. After the week, they realized that God had given them his blessing. Once God gave the-go ahead, there was no need to wait. Juanyta selected an engagement ring for Roz and prepared to ask her to be her forever love.

On Sunday, October 6, the two women dined at Eddie V’s restaurant in Fort Worth. The hostess guided them to their seats, and the waiter took their drinks. Patrons were friendly and smiled as they walked past their table. Juanyta bent down on one knee and asked Roz to be her forever love and marry her. Roz was in total disbelief; she said yes with tears in her eyes and with no hesitation. Unbeknownst to many, Roz is a closeted hopeless romantic. Love stories are near and dear to her heart, but this time the story was about her. She had no clue that this night would start their journey of building a life together. To Roz’s joy, her fiancée revealed that her sons, Jayden and Jordan, had given their blessings as well.

A LITTLE ADVICE from us is to have a wedding planner. The best money we’ve ever spent!

inslow and Megan met freshman year of high school and began dating their senior year. In August 2019, Winslow surprised her and their families by proposing on the

top of a mountain in Norway. The views were breathtaking, and the proposal fit the couple’s love for travel and adventure. Right away, they knew they preferred a fall/winter wedding, thanks to the harsh summer weather in Texas. The couple preferred winter colors over spring/summer, so that’s why their color palette was full of deep wine, creams, blush, and lots of greenery. They were looking for a clean, open space for the venue but wanted to warm it up with a natural winter feel. Choosing the Modern Art Museum for their reception really set the stage for the rest of the wedding planning. Their theme stayed clean and modern with the simple, neutral colors but warmed up with candles, wood, and greenery. They included pine and wood into their florals and décor without feeling too rustic, thanks to our incredible florist. Other than the colors, the first thing they chose for their wedding was the band. “One of our top priorities of the wedding was making sure our guests had a great time, which seemed like a given with a live band, and we were right!” Says Megan. “All our vendors made our wedding the most joyful and unforgettable day. It was timeless and more beautiful than we could’ve imagined!”

A LITTLE ADVICE “Take the time to enjoy the day. Have everything planned and delegated before your wedding day so that you can be stress-free and be present. Everyone is there to love and support you, and it’s so important to cherish every second with your significant other and your guests!”

ori Grace and Austen met at Pine Cove Summer Camp, where they worked for three summers between their years at Texas A&M. Austen’s sister and Tori Grace worked together, and eventually, she introduced her to Austen. About a year later, after a summer of seeing each other on and off, Austen asked her to a date party where they ended up spending the evening talking for hours. All their friends tease them by saying they went on like five first dates. In their defense, they did have a few pre-first-date dates. They dated throughout their whole senior year and into the pandemic. Once school went completely online, they were both able to move home to Dallas and spent the entire spring together. Austen says he knew they were going to get married after their second date. It took Tori Grace a little longer to get there, but it wasn’t long before she knew he was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. Austen makes her laugh like no one else and gives her complete room to be herself. Austen proposed in July, and they were married just four months later in November. For their wedding, they wanted a modern boho vibe. The venue was pretty modern with white walls and black iron but adding in some pampas grass, and bright flowers gave it the exact look Tori Grace had envisioned. One of her favorite elements was the black bridesmaids’ dresses. She loved how they turned out - letting each girl pick a different dress they felt beautiful. The couple viewed their wedding as the first event that they got to host as a married couple. They wanted to make sure their guests all had a good time because if they were, the newlyweds would be too.

yler and Jeffi became acquainted via social media in the Fall of 2017. After several months of an impressive and persistent courtship on Tyler’s part, Jeffi finally agreed to a first date. They never looked back after that first date. In the years following, they traveled to countless extraordinary destinations, made unforgettable memories, and quickly fell in love with each other and their life together. In February of 2020, Tyler finally “popped the question” at a beautiful tucked-away cabin in New Mexico with a snow-covered landscape. Both of their families were waiting to surprise her for a celebration of an unforgettable day. After their beautiful and thoughtful proposal, the wedding planning commenced. Jeffi had always dreamt of a fall wedding, so the couple decided on October. They wanted an Old-World look, rich colors, and unique components to make their dream wedding come to life. Jeffi chose to incorporate fruit compote in the flowers to add dimension, color, and distinction. The arrangements included plump black grapes, deep purple plums, bright crimson pomegranates, dried figs, and a mix of floral and greenery, all combined to form an intricate display of colors and textures. The couple decided on La Bella Luna in Granbury, TX for their ceremony, a newly constructed venue with an Old-World atmosphere that brought their wedding vision to life.

WE ARE SO THANKFUL we had a large wedding. It was an unforgettable night with our closest friends and family. We are glad we had an incredible live band. We could not recommend this enough. We are happy we spent the extra money on a fantastic photographer and videographer so that we may relive this memorable night for years to come.

ollin and Kaitlyn met in June 2017 while they were both living in Austin. They went on regular dates to Lake Travis, The Grove, and Torchy’s for their favorite margaritas. After their first few months of dating, Collin received a job offer in Houston, and they decided that they would give long distance a try. That didn’t last for long, and by spring 2018, Kaitlyn had moved to Houston, too. At that point, they both knew they had “the one.” Collin gathered Kaitlyn’s closest friends for his surprise proposal on Lake Travis on Valentine’s Day 2020. Over the next year, Kaitlyn and Collin planned their wedding during the pandemic. They chose to keep their original wedding date, March 6, 2021 and had a wonderful time celebrating with their closest friends and family. They wanted their wedding to be timeless and classic. They chose a sophisticated gold and blush color palette to go with their traditional décor and attire. The couple wanted their wedding to be a true celebration of their marriage by having an extravagant party with good music, dancing, and tasty drinks! Ensuring that their guests had fun was of utmost importance to the couple during their planning process.

ADVICE FOR COUPLES Our biggest advice for couples is to schedule plenty of time for pictures and eat before the wedding. I wished I had planned more time for photos after the ceremony because of such a tight pre-ceremony timeline. So make sure to allow plenty of time when you can! Collin wants engaged couples to make sure they at least have snacks while getting ready for the ceremony! They had an evening wedding and only ate breakfast and had some precelebration drinks before the ceremony, and he wishes they had more food before!

llie and Austin met in college while playing tennis with friends, such Wimbledon vibes. Soon after their tennis game, Austin told his friends and family that he was going to date, Allie. Allie hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but soon before she knew it, Austin started showing up everywhere. They had their first class together, and two weeks into the school year, they went on their first date. Allie was hesitant initially; however, Austin continued to pursue her heart. The couple waited two months to have their first kiss in order to spend time getting to know each other. This caused Allie to fall in love with Austin faster than she could ever imagine. “He challenges me to be a better Christian, he makes me laugh until my cheeks hurt, and he loves others unconditionally.” The couple wanted their wedding to be designed to imitate their relationship; timeless, classic, and full of natural beauty. After studying abroad in England, Allie fell in love with the culture, the time-less architecture, the simplicity, and the natural beauty. She couldn’t think of a more perfect “theme” than English Garden. Natural finishes, muted pinks, icy blues, and a lot of greenery and neutrals. “My heart behind the whole process was not to get caught up or discouraged by comparing other’s weddings, but to instead continue to be motivated by what you have and who you have by your side. I believe this made the planning process and the day so full of joy.” Allie and Austin had planned to get married at a historical tea room downtown; however, due to COVID, they had to move their wedding outdoors. It just so happened that the day Allie was googling “historical houses,” a brand-new venue came up. Although the interior wasn’t finished yet, the venue was the absolute best to work with and made my dreams come true.

With Allie’s background in marking, she wanted their wedding to have a brand. She took it upon herself to design their wedding. From the logo, invitations, save the dates, menus, website, hand making the napkins, centerpieces, and having her mom sew the children’s dresses and bobby suits. “All of these details are something I will cherish forever, as it allowed me to spend hours crafting with my mom and family members. I will never forget sitting around the table with all my family to put together the invitations I created - a sweet memory I will cherish forever!”

SPECIAL MOMENT After our first look, Austin and I took the time to wash each other’s feet and pray together. This was by far my favorite moment of the day. It was so special to take a moment and recognize the commitment we were making and symbolize our desire to serve one another forever!

ADVICE FOR COUPLES Put God first. Always date! Keep winning your partner’s heart. Be grateful. Keep having fun. Challenge one another and never give up!

P

rincess Nsemere Ruth Komuntale and Phillip Farqharson, met in 2018. The two had come through the healing process of ending difficult marriages to previous partners. They describe that process of healing as God’s preparation for each other. This foundation allowed these soul mates to start on steady ground. Princess Nsemere and Phillip met through a mutual friend. Phil was scrolling through social media when he spotted a photo of Nsemere on his friend’s page. He thought, “There is something different in her smile.” He asked his friend for her information, and Nsemere agreed to allow him to contact her. At the time, the two lived far apart. Phil was serving as a contractor for the U.S. military in Qatar, and Nsemere was living stateside. They began chatting every day and realized that there were several times that they were scheduled to be in the same place at the same time. They may

1 1 8

have inadvertently met on any of those occasions, but the timing just wasn’t right. Princess Nsemere is very humble and did not initially reveal that she was falling in love with this kindhearted Air Force Veteran. After six months of talking, the two decided that this was getting serious, and they needed to come together face to face finally. They scheduled a trip, first to Texas, where Phil was introduced to Princess Nsemere’s brother, His Majesty The King of Tooro, and their mother, Her Royal Highness Queen Mother of Tooro. Shortly after, the two traveled to Georgia to meet Phil’s family. Upon meeting, they realized they were a perfect fit. They compliment each other’s strengths and outsmart the other’s weaknesses. It didn’t take long for the two to make it official and start planning their future.

WE ARE SO HAPPY WE had our wedding at The Artisan! It is such a unique and fun vibe for a wedding in downtown Dallas, and we loved that we were able to host everything in one spot and not have to move our guests around frequently.

I

n the fall of 2011, Caroline and Adam met during their sophomore year while attending SMU in Dallas, TX. They ended up in Computer Science 2 together, only because Caroline had to drop the class the prior semester for not doing so well. She does apologize to her mom for this. After dating for seven years, which included a year-and-a-half of long-distance; a move to California, then back to Dallas, Adam proposed to Caroline on her birthday under the twinkling lights in Highland Park Village. She said it was the easiest yes of her life! The couple enjoyed about ten months of engagement before finally deciding to start the wedding planning process. They trimmed their guest list down from about 150 guests to 30 due

to the curveball of 2020, and with this, they knew they could focus on the aesthetic of being classic, minimal, and elegant. Mayfield Events helped create a look centered around beautiful and fresh white flowers, black chargers, and touches of gold and silver to compliment the holiday season. The groom and groomsmen all wore black tuxes, and the bridesmaids wore long black gowns of their choice. The guests wore black-tieoptional attire and enjoyed cocktails, a great dinner, and a lot of dancing and singing for the rest of the evening. Even with pretty significant changes to our original plan, the wedding turned out to be wonderful and truly one of the best nights of our lives!

They connected over A&M football and soon began enjoying their own Thursday night movie dates and exploring the College Station dining scene together. They dated through college and, after graduation, made the best of their long-distance relationship by visiting one another and taking trips to places like Cancun, Cozumel, and New Orleans. They chose Kimberly’s hometown of Dallas for their January wedding and wanted to plan an evening that was both

traditional and timeless. The classic design of Perkins Chapel at Southern Methodist University was the perfect backdrop for the ceremony, while the historic Belo Mansion provided an elegant and inviting atmosphere for their downtown Dallas reception. The classic theme was incorporated throughout the wedding, from the gold script on the invitations and programs to the bride’s gown with its beaded bodice and flowing silk skirt. The light beige bridesmaid dresses and winter white table linens provided a neutral backdrop for the blush and deep burgundy florals and seasonal greenery. At the end of the evening, Kimberly and Chris were sent off in a horse-drawn carriage: a surprise from the groom’s parents.

WE WERE HAPPY WE held the ceremony and reception within a few miles of each other, creating a smoother transition for everyone attending. Providing transportation for the wedding party and hotel guests added another level of convenience and facilitated getting them where they needed to be, which was greatly appreciated.

A

nnamarie and Joshua met in their first year of graduate film school at Columbia University in New York and connected over their sense of humor, love of coffee, creativity, and desire to seek out new experiences through travel, food, books, and films. A few years later—after many cups of coffee, road trips, and memorable meals out—they got engaged in New York, outside of Lincoln Center. They planned to get married in Dallas, Annamarie’s hometown, in the early fall and wanted an outdoor, gardenstyle wedding with minimal and modern elements. Drawn to its timeless design and the stunning views of the lake, they decided on the A lex Camp House at the Dallas Arboretum and set a date for September 22: the first day of fall. The modern theme was incorporated into everything from the minimal design of the invitations and escort cards to the

bride’s elegant crepe silk A lexandra Grecco dress and the groom’s navy suit. The colors and florals were designed to speak to the season, with loose greenery, ivory, amber giving the nod to the end of the summer, and tones of rust, navy, and the dove gray bridesmaids’ dresses anticipating the fall. Though the wedding weekend was marked by several unseasonal downpours—requiring the ceremony to be moved inside the house—the rain held off during the reception. It allowed for guests to eat and gather under a candlelit tent on the lawn. The cool breeze off the lake created a lovely setting for the evening of dinner and dancing, which concluded with a white rose petal send-off for the bride and groom.

ADVICE FOR COUPLES The wedding planning process will elicit a lot of interest and competing priorities/ideas between the couple and their families. It is imperative to have open lines of communication and to look for a compromise wherever possible.

A

shwin and Meena both met in college while students at Texas A&M University. While never having come across each other previously, they met by chance on Good Friday at the West campus food court. The campus and food court were mainly empty given the holiday, and Ashwin noticed Meena sitting at a table working on Biochemistry homework – a course Ashwin had taken before. Seeing Meena’s work, Ashwin approached her and commented on the class, and the professor, leading to their first conversation. After a few weeks of going on dates and celebrating Aggie traditions, both Ashwin and Meena knew they had found “the one.” Over the next six years, Ashwin and Meena would grow to love, appreciate, and admire each other. Being very different people, Ashwin and

Meena found common ground helping each other overcome various professional obstacles, constantly encouraging and motivating each other to reach their goals. When thinking about their wedding, they both wanted something classic and romantic, a representation of them. They had an engagement party in 2018 that had a “mystical garden” vibe and wanted to continue drawing on that with many lush florals and greens. OUR ADVICE for future couples would be to enjoy the moment, but make sure to take a lot of pictures. The day goes by fast, and it’s nice to have a physical memory that you can go back and look at to remember.

J

annett and Alex met in 2016. Jannett had just come back from a 3-month trip abroad and moved back to her hometown after living independently. She decided to try dating as she got used to her new normal. Alex was looking for a serious relationship, so he decided to try online dating. When Alex came across Jannett’s profile, he just had to shoot his shot. When Jannett received the message from Alex, she was surprised by how easy and fun it was to converse with him. After a week of messaging back and forth, they decided to meet up. Alex has done one of the best things in life, messaging Jannett. Ever since they met, Alex has learned that he, too, can be crazily happy in love. The couple met at a popular Korean BBQ restaurant in Carrollton. The food and conversation were fantastic. They both enjoyed each other’s company.

The wedding was Phantom of the opera-themed, using red, black, and white as their colors, an abundance of red roses, and gold decor. The goal was to make the ceremony look like a theater and the reception hall feel like an elegant masquerade. A string quartet played music from the Phantom of the opera, and the guests wore masquerade masks to keep everything on the theme. They also had a second ceremony to honor Alex‘s Korean heritage. In this Korean ceremony, called payback, newly married couples offer tea to their parents, and the parents offered the couples wisdom. The ceremony was filled with traditions such as having the family members throw chestnuts and dates at the couple to determine how many children they will have in the future.
