From our many phone ca lls and texts, to our brainstorming meetings at Panera Bread, I cannot thank her enough. of fun, but I won’t lie, a little stressful as well. I started with one goa l: to expand the wedding industr y south of DF W. Little did I know that one sma ll goa l would quick ly turn into something so much more. Something that I would never have expected, publish a magazine. I didn’t want to publish just another wedding magazine. I wanted to create something that was different, something educationa l and inspiring, that would leave my mark on the industr y. I’ve spent the last severa l months meeting with different vendors from a ll over. I’ve listened to their stories, ta lked about their goa ls, and discussed how we can help each other. ello brides! While fairly new to the wedding industr y I am ver y excited to be here! I g raduated with my Bachelor of Science in Fashion Merchandising in December of 2017 from Stephen F. Austin State University - A xe ‘em Jacks! Since then I have had the opportunity to work in many different areas of the fashion industr y - in and out of the Da llas Market Center, retail f loors, showrooms and beyond. While in school my passion for writing played a large part in my extracurriculars. From writing for my student news publication to being a qua lif ier for university literar y competitions, I g uess you could say I have a knack for it! I am orig ina lly from Midlothian, TX and lived there until I moved to Nacogdoches in 2014 to pursue my deg ree. In college I was a member of the Delta Zeta nationa l sorority where I met some of my lifelong friends and sisters. Are you obligated to feed your vendors? Our advice to any bride is to make sure they are all fed. It’s the polite thing to do regardless of what is in your contract. After all, they will be with you for most of the day. Even though they’re being paid for their services, they are just like you and probably get hangry when they aren’t fed.

e are thrilled to share this charming session inspired by organic tones of dusty blue. These colors pair perfectly with one another and offer a romantic

and sophisticated feel. For this editorial we teamed up with an amazing group vendors to bring our inspiration to life. The table setting featured a dusty blue runner with classic dusty blue linen napkins, and vintage silver silverware from Wabi-Sabi Vintage. The gorgeous florals were provided by our talented friends at Always In Love Weddings. Alexa Kay Events was in charge of the planning and logistics to make sure our dreams were perfect. Brite Bar Beauty along with Lizzy Styles brought the incredible glam to make our bride look amazing. This along with the beautiful laced dress by Bliss Bridal, the Jewelry by Natalie Wood and the gorgeous Samantha’s shoes by Kate Whitcomb made it perfect.

ruit isn’t only for summer smoothies! This fall fruit-inspired styled shoot was beautifully captured by Rachel Elaine Photography and is sure to make you swoon! A monochromatic color palette accented with greenery creates a whimsical atmosphere at The Lost Oak Winery in Burleson, Texas.

Turning leaves and a breathtaking vineyard added to the fall charisma, contributing natural details to the fruit-colored aesthetic. The bride leaves us breathless in her delicate A-line lace dress. Her classic, loose curls complement her flowy dress, giving her a modern, yet timeless look. The pomegranate-colored smoky eye by Jennifer Hunt, LE pops as it pulls from the beautiful colors of the bouquet.

Why have one cake when you can have three? Cakeaholics created a trio of miniature cakes with different patterns and textures that cohesively work together, allowing each color and fruit to pop. Written in modern calligraphy, Alexandra EM Lettering & Designs crafted a chic invitation suite embodying the true inspiration of fruit through the vibrant colors of the text and visual of the watercolor overlay.

his shoot was all about the contrast! The bright colors and shimmering gold would be nothing if it were not for the subtle, naturally dark, complimentary accents. The more you study these photos the more you begin to see how contrast works together throughout its entirety. Not only are the colors exposed to their fullest potential, making delicate pinks pop, or fall fading colors spring back to life, but the varying styles seems to defy even the definition of contrast. One would never think that the straight and defined lines of an industrial building could directly compliment the uncontained gentle edges of an overflowing floral, or how the seemingly waning colors of those same flowers could give life to the lips of the bride. All in all, this shoot truly showed me how contrast, not only in light or dark, but in nature and modern design can work together to make each other absolutely stunning!

BREAKING OUT OF THE MOLD: WHEN MODERN CLASSIC meets A RUSTIC VENUE

I

n this shoot we hung up the burlap and lace and created a sleek, modern-leaning theme at Winding Brooks in Ennis, Texas. We took the rich colors of deep teal, anthracite and dove gray and incorporated mixed metals and geometric shapes along with complementing tones of terracotta, burgundy red, and vibrant blue florals to create a concept quite different from what is normally seen in a rustic venue. A non-cookie-cutter photography approach captured the substance of our theme.

M OUN TA IN TOP FILM S

The anthracite velvet tablecloth and bronze metal chargers on the sweetheart table were the perfect base to the patterned china and rose gold flatware. Gold rimmed black marble coasters and florals in terracotta pots accented with a teal band added to the texture. The guest table dressed in opulent teal velvet continued the mixed metal theme along with champagne chargers, sparkling lead crystal stemware and a vibrant floral centerpiece. Flickering candles in a sea of hanging terrarium bowls created an intimate indoor light garden.

Geometrics played an integral part of the cake table. The square tiered cake with a white crystal geode topper added to the geometric interest of the table linen and mirrored pyramid candlesticks. Miniature pies packaged in monogrammed foil lined square boxes were placed as thank you favors for guests.

The styling of the bridal couple kept to the sleek theme. A satin gown following the trend of sleek, simple elegance and an updated version of the classic lace gown incorporated a distinctive floral design in the delicate lace. These styles demonstrate the bridal trend that breaks away from boho in favor of modern silhouettes emphasizing design over detail. An Audrey Hepburn influenced hair and makeup style and the subtle lip color proved that “any girl can wear red lips.” Our groom’s slim fitting velvet tuxedo and non-traditional parrot tulip boutonnière complimented the bride’s ensemble perfectly. A unique escort card display of gold and silver hand lettered marble arabesque tiles sat on six-foot tripod mirrors. Similar lettered tiles showcased silk ties in the groom’s dressing room. An invitation suite with crisp calligraphy completed the clean, modern theme. CREDITS B RIDAL G OWN , TUXE DO & ACC E S S O R I E S | P H OTO G RAP H E R |

histle Springs Ranch is a beautiful venue among rolling hills and winding country roads in the small town of Cleburne, TX. With this shoot, we wanted to make sure we captured the true Texas roots of the ranch, while being able to give couple’s ways to accentuate the elegant features. Samantha, with Sabel Moments, was able to catch every last detail of the venue that we all fell in love with. We knew we wanted to have shades of burgundy to complement the natural wood and then wanted to use various blues to mix it up. The floral arrangements by Peonies were the perfect mix of

rustic elegance to pair with the Exotic Bird place settings from Posh Couture Rentals and velvet linen from AM Linen Rentals. Pretty on Premises provided a classic look for Michelle that looked stunning with the BHLDN gown. The stationery by Words Made Semple complemented the table setting so beautifully. his beautiful styled shoot at Firefly Gardens was ethereal, elegant, and so much fun to create. My goal was to design a shoot that had beautiful soft hues full of small details. With this in mind, a color palette was chosen with soothing lavenders, refreshing creams, and muted pinks. The tablescape is one of my favorite parts of a shoot to design. I wanted to add height and depth to the typical tables with the overhang of florals above romantic lit candles. We chose simple and elegant furniture by Junk and Disorderly, for a lounge space all filled with exquisite florals. A lounge provides the guest with a beautiful, relaxing environment. The cake and cocktails brought simplicity yet additional details. The invitations and signage was provided by Brown Fox Creative and gave the shoot a delicate overall feel. I hope you get all the feels when you look at the pictures captured by, Flavia Watkins Photography.

or this session we wanted to create an editorial that represented what dreams are made of, and this session is definitely it. We worked with an incredible team of vendors and created the most beautiful set up in the dreamy Stonewall Ranch in Malibu. When we arrived we could not stop gushing at how beautiful the views were from the top of the mountain area of the location. It would truly be a dream for any couple to tie the knot there. In addition to the already gorgeous location, Mia from Pastiche Events designed everything perfectly to fit the earthy fall mood we were going for. We wanted to make sure that the wedding set up, matched with the beautiful nature surrounding it. Royal Bee Florals made sure to do just this, and designed a dreamy table setup overlooking the mountains of Malibu. The earthy tones of the floral, and stationary by Letter and Ink created a set up that was unique, yet romantic and looked like something straight out of a fairytale. A team of phenomenal vendors made sure the bride looked elegant and chic. The makeup by Itsada made sure to accentuate this already gorgeous bride, while Rachelle Games created the flawless boho hair. The dress provided by Coco Melody and jewelry by Niks Candi added the perfect touch of elegance. We loved how this real couple fit perfectly with the mood of the entire inspiration. We’re so excited to share this beautiful session!

eddings on your mind? Dresses and venues? Photog raphers and favors? Menus and honeymoons? What about the marriage? The rest of the days, weeks, months and years that follow the big day? For those are rea lly the point, aren’t they? As a therapist, I see couples who have sometimes focused more on their wedding than they have their marriage. Their str uggle and their pain can revea l where their engagement preparation was the most focused. A few years ago, a student from a nearby university asked to inter view me for a class assig nment. He was enrolled in a marriage and family counseling class and needed to inter view a therapist who worked with couples. He asked lots of questions but the one that stands out to me after a ll these years was, “What’s the main cause of marita l troubles?” He was sur prised when I answered, “self ishness.” He told me he had expected me to say something like money, communication or sex. Those are the topics that research has shown are sources of g reat stress in marriage and he’d been learning about them. I ag reed with him and the research; that those are often the main sources of trouble for married couples, but the root of the conf lict in those areas is still self ishness. Self ishness wants what it wants, how it wants it and when it wants it. Self ishness is demanding and usua lly impatient. Self ishness is less concerned with what’s good or comfortable for others and more concerned with what’s good and

comfortable for it. A nd that’s why the main cause of marita l troubles is self ishness.

“What’s the main cause of marital troubles?”

He was

surprised when I answered, “selfishness.” So now, right now, as you’re planning and deciding on wedding details keep that in mind. Keep that self ish part of your human nature in check. Discipline that part of yourself because you’ ll be rea lly glad you did once the wedding is over and the marriage is under way. The best marriages are built by considering the other person. It sounds so easy and sometimes it is. However, sometimes it’s rea lly, rea lly not, and as a therapist, I want to remind you that it’s wise and good to ask for help if you need it. Be intentiona l about reig ning in self ishness when it seeps out and pur posely live out care and concern for your partner’s good. It’s easy to get caught up in the details of the ceremony, reception and honeymoon but it’s your relationship that led you to this moment in the f irst place. Your wedding will be beautiful. You will be beautiful. Ma ke sure your marriage is even more so.

In 2017, Luis proposed during Christmas on the beach in his hometown of Brownsville, TX and Caroline joyfully accepted. The two decided to enjoy a long engagement and have made plans to marry in Costa Rica in June 2019, with close family and friends on the beach. The celebration will be intimate but lively, perfect for this laid-back, no-fuss couple. They both share a love for the outdoors, especially the water, and so during their engagement session I made sure to take them to one of Dallas’ best spotsWhite Rock Lake. We decided to arrange a bouquet from a local florist to emphasize a bridal look and Caroline opted for a simple summer dress that complimented Luis’ outfit. The love between Caroline and Luis is evident in their photos- they have a sweet playfulness that makes their posing so natural. While these two have been together for years, it is so wonderful to watch a couple embark on a new chapter of their relationship and I wish them the very best during this special season in their lives. Their event showcased the most charming details of Texas, with shades of blue and golds to represent the bluebonnets and that breathta king Texas sky. It was important to Nicole to maintain simplicity and strive for understated details. Keeping this in mind when looking at f lora ls, the Barnes opted for a less is more feel when deciding on the quantity of their f lower arrangements in order to not ta ke away from the elegance of their venue selection. At the end of the day Nicole said that keeping a few more va lued pieces from their wedding to place in their home was more of an afterthought than a predetermined plan. However, it was decided that this was the best way to commemorate the occasion. They kept items such as a large canvas piece now hang ing in their ha llway with “ The Stars At Night…” lyrics from an old familiar tune. Cattle horns had been saved and is now used as mantle decor over the f ireplace, as well as some vases placed throughout the home that once ser ved as f lora l arrangement holders. The couple a lso

A lthough the sentimenta l va lue is obviously priceless, the benef its of staying simple and understated with your decor are plentiful. Reusing items in the home and keeping DIY to a minimum is a ver y cost effective choice, as well as low stress. When asked what advice she had for other brides, Nicole responded with a resounding

“Less is more”. She wants to urge new brides to consider renting as many items as they can when it comes to decor, stating that “DIY projects can get collectively expensive and become a stressful obstacle”. In light of good advice, let’s ta lk about what you can rent. While it is a lmost necessar y to rent your venue space as well as your tables & seating, there are some things that we don’t think of that may be worth borrowing for the big day. In some cases brides may choose to rent miscellaneous items such as wa ll decor, lounge items, table tops, lighting and more. While it is a ll well and good to want a few DIY items for whimsy and detail, the rentables are a lifesaver. So brides, if you haven’t wa lked away from this with any other lesson, let it be that there are things worth preser ving and there are things that we must be willing to ma ke temporar y. It is our ability to pick and choose that will benef it most us in the end.

P L A NNE R | T R E A S UR E D H E A RT E V E NT S Cole and I began dating in our teens when we were going to rival high schools, and continued dating through college. We had planned to get married for years but he surprised me with the proposal just before Christmas. We both agree that what made our wedding fun was packing The Brooks at Weatherford to capacity with so many of our life-long friends and family. One of the most sentimental moments we experienced occurred when we were eating the private dinner that our amazing wedding planner, Ashlee Nicholson of Treasured Heart Events, arranged for us. It gave us a chance to be alone and actually talk to each other for a moment after the ceremony and before the reception. That’s when it really began to sink in that we were married. While eating, we were also able to laugh and enjoy hearing the guests practice cheering for our entrance led by our great friend and DJ, Ryan Haggard. Rivaling that moment was when the chief of police and retired Texas Ranger from my hometown saved the day by showing up minutes before the wedding with the veil we had forgotten miles away in our locked home. My advice for future brides would be to focus on getting a great photographer and wedding planner. The photographers are the ones

capturing not only you and your groom, but so many of the people and fun moments that will represent your special day together. It is so important to find a great wedding planner that understands how the two of you want your wedding to unfold and works to make it yours. The wedding planner will not only help you connect with the very best vendors, but they are also the ones that make your big day run effortlessly! Finally, relax and enjoy the day as it unfolds because your best memories will be forgetting your veil, the groomsman with Jr. sized pants, and the precious baby fingerprints that miraculously show up in the bride’s cake.

About this table With a ll the many different wedding trends, this classic and modern look will never get old. The options are limitless and you can mix and match with so many different elements to f it your style. Copper was the focus on this tablescape. I wanted to keep this simple yet add a little glam to it. The beautiful velvet taupe linen adds that extra pop and dresses this up perfectly. Peach and linen f lora ls rea lly compliment the copper, and the white dishes help to keep this look elegant and modern.

Keep it simple Ma ke sure the element(s) you choose to add to your decor do not compete with one another. Your details will stand out more. The rose on the white dishes are ver y simple yet ma ke a big statement in the overa ll feel.

My baking journey began at the age of three when my dad taught me how to make biscuits. Growing up I always enjoyed cooking and art. So, when I graduated with an fine arts degree from The University of North Texas at Denton, I took over the family business, Uncle Willie’s Pies, so my dad could retire. Being a “girl boss” has been a part of my traits since childhood when I was selling candy at school. I use those same ‘hustle’ strategies now in my business whether it’s marketing a product or networking with fellow industry professionals and meeting engaged couples. I love telling the client’s story through desserts for weddings and events. We will make your wedding sweeter with our delicious southern desserts, including pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, and brownies, and more, that are displayed beautifully in dessert stations and still have that familiar nostalgic flavor just like grandma made it! For over twenty years we have worked hard to “bake” your dreams come true with our attention to detail, for your custom, personalized desserts and bless your guests with an unforgettable experience.

Q. How long before the wedding should a bride start a skin routine?

Q. A re there other services you would recommend before a wedding?

A . Idea lly, a bride should start a reg ular facia l routine about three months before the wedding. It ta kes time for the skin to rea lly renew itself, decrease any major concerns, and promote hea lthy skin. Great skin ta kes time.

A . Doing a lash lift and tint is a rea lly good treatment prior to the wedding. The natura l lashes are curled and then tinted so they rea lly pop. As an added bonus, tinted lashes mean you won’t have to worr y about mascara for as long as the tint lasts – usua lly a ll the way through the honeymoon!

Q. Morning of the wedding day skin routine? A . Each person’s skin is different, so it’s more important to get a facia l that is tailored to your skin rather than a mag ic ‘wedding’ facia l. Overa ll, the Rejuvenating Facia l or the Collagen Facia l are my highest recommendations because they focus on resurfacing the skin and increased hydration. Q. How often should a bride come in for a tailored facial? A . Ever y 2-3 weeks is g reat because that a llows continued deep cleansing of deep skill cells each time before they have a chance to build up again. Q. What are the best home care products to use? A . I have put together a Brida l Beauty kit that includes three of my favorite products from Clarity Clinica l Skin Care: Cleanse Daily, Ta ke Care Daily, and Skin Defense.

A . A day or two before is nice because then the ma keup for the wedding will glide on effortlessly. The last facia l before a wedding is cr ucia l because you want to ma ke sure not to over exfoliate the skin. A sensitive skin exfoliant is best for the last treatment. Q. Do you have a product to use for oil control on the day of the wedding? A . Clarity Clinica l Skin Care ma kes an excellent moisturizer, Ca ll Me In The Morning. It g ives your skin a nice matte f inish.

Q. Top 3 skin care rules for brides? A . 1) Start your home routine and facia ls at least 3 months before your wedding day. 2) Don’t exfoliate at home the week before the wedding. 3) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Q. Professional makeup artists are expensive, do brides really need one their wedding day? A . If you have ever had a botched ma keover from a friend, then you a lready know the answer to this question. You will be pulled a thousand different directions on that specia l day and you want to know that your ma keup is on point. The photog raphs will be your harshest critic. Professiona ls will a lso use higher qua lity materia ls that will last better than store brands. RACH EL E LAINE PHO TO GRAPH Y

YES TO THE DRESS w r i t t e n b y | A B B I E M C K E LV E Y photographed by | REBECCA CHESNEY

With the new year upon us, the styles and trends of the fashion industr y are moving on without looking back. This absolutely does not exclude the brida l gown industr y. From delicious colors, to seamless silhouettes and detailed textures there has never been a better time to start thinking about what you want in a wedding dress. So where do you start? We’re here to help! Let’s ta lk silhouettes. In recent years, the goa l of the modern wedding dress has been to accentuate the individua l bride’s best features, where her most natura l beauty is found. Think of what a silhouette can do for you, not what you can do for it. A lthough there are many a lternatives here, we want to go over some more popular selections. We’ ll start with the ba ll gown. A ba ll gown will be f itted in the bodice until it hits the waist where it will then extend down and out in a g rand fashion. The skirt is a lways large and in most cases creates a f lowing movement. This cut is complimentar y for pear or hourglass shapes. Not to mention the fact that you’ ll feel just like a princess! So what if you’re looking for something a little more forg iving? A-line dresses are the way to go. A n A-line shape will be f itted at the top of the bodice and either come outward in the shape of an “A” at the waist or be modif ied to f it at the hips and then spread out. This style is gorgeous on just about any body type. Want something to embellish your cur ves? We recommend a tr umpet or mermaid silhouette. A tr umpet will f it the body from the top of the bodice down to the mid-thigh and f lare or fan outward, where a mermaid will extend further in its f it and f lare lower towards the knee to accomplish that “ f ish tail ” effect.

DF W S O CIAL GET LET ’S || 70

While the silhouette itself is a paramount detail, the color of your dress is just as relevant. Today’s modern bride is leaning toward a trendy shade of a lmond, however this is not to say that you would be considered “out of style” should you decide to ta ke the road less traveled. A white or ivor y dress is timeless, classic and will not steer you wrong. However, you have to understand that in today’s brida l gown industr y white is no longer just white…it comes in many forms and you must be selective when obser ving how your hue or shade might affect your skin tone. But let’s say for arg ument’s sa ke that you are a more non-traditiona l bride. You don’t want a white dress? Great. You have other options! If you are a g irly g irl at heart you may be leaning toward a blush dress. Blush provides just the slightest hint of pink and adds a subtle feminine f lavor to any gown. You may a lso be looking for something a bit more ostentatious, for you we suggest a meta llic option. Meta llic hues include choices such as gold, silver, and even champag ne for brides who require more swank in their style. A nd if you’re feeling particularly bold, there is a lways a more demilitarized option; the black wedding gown. If you’re in the market to ma ke an “out of left f ield ” statement, black detailed gowns have made a bit of an impression on the industr y in more recent years. One detail that seems to be overlooked quite often is the texture of a garment. Texture, like color, is imperative and can set the mood or theme of the gown just as effortlessly. Admittedly there is a lot to consider when looking at textures, so we’ ll start with the basics: fabric. Fabric is a complete matter of opinion but that is not to imply that there is a shortage of options. To name a few, organza, tulle, silk, satin, taffeta, and various forms of lace are a ll ver y elegant fabric choices that would compliment an abundant number of styles. You might a lso discover that the way you lay and/or layer your fabric has a large impact on the result. Choosing a garment with r uff led, pleated, or tiered fabric dependant upon the silhouette can ma ke a ll the difference. But let’s look beyond just fabric. How else can you create movement and shift within your dress? You want three dimensiona l detailing. A mong these are beading, sequins, appliqué, embroider y, and more. Three dimensiona l details are oftentimes seen but not appreciated for the artistr y that went into them. They add a touch of dreaminess and whimsy or in other cases a hint of g randeur and sophistication.

Fina lly, we would like to discuss a ver y favorable trend that has continued to be a crowd pleaser for various reasons among the modern brides. Separates. HOW TO GET THE most OUT OF YOUR BRIDAL PORTRAITS

B

w r i t t e n b y | F L AV I A WAT K I N S , F L AV I A WAT K I N S P H O T O G R A P H Y

ridal portraits are a beautiful southern tradition that have become a staple photography session for the modern Texas bride. Recommended by many photographers, this session is an opportunity for the bride-to-be to celebrate a joyous milestone and show off their unique style. In order to get the most out of the session, I encourage a “stress-less” way of doing bridals that will lead to the best you on the day of your bridals. Here are some tips below:

one:

Choose a location that compliments your style and taste and where you will feel most comfortable. Many brides choose to have their bridals done at their wedding venue, and while that is great, it’s not a rule. Are you getting married in the country, but are a city girl at heart? Go to downtown Dallas for your bridals! Love the outdoors? Ask your photographer if they will go to a state park for the bridal session. Wherever you go, you should feel “at home” for the most genuine photographs that show off your true-self.

two: Schedule the session at least a month before the wedding to allow enough time for printing.

It will likely be on a weekday since most photographers are busy during the weekend shooting weddings. Take this opportunity to take a half or even full day off work, if your schedule allows. Pamper yourself and enjoy being a bride-to-be! This gives you the opportunity to arrive at your bridals relaxed and well-rested.

three: Try and use the bridal session to test-run your hair and make up and floral vendors. This

is the best option so you can get to know these vendors before the big day. However, don’t beat yourself up over not being able to book them in for your bridals. Scheduling can be tough and brides can go cross-eyed trying to squeeze everyone into one day. If it works out, great! If it doesn’t, don’t sweat it. If you must, go to a make up counter to get your make up done, a blow out bar for your locks and run by a grocer or local flower shop for a small bouquet that suits your style.

four: Choose a photographer who enjoys giving you advice and is helpful when you ask for direction. They are a professional who has experience and should be committed to making your experience one of a kind. Remember, you are the main event during a bridal session. Don’t be afraid to get creative and don’t stress the small stuff- you are enough, everything else is just extra.

e asked, you said yes and now you are floating through your days with a rock on your hand and a wedding to plan. Before you jump into all the nitty gritty of planning your dream wedding, take a few moments to enjoy this amazing time in your life. One of the first ways you can celebrate your new relationship status is with an engagement session. But why settle for the typical session when you can go BIG with a destination session. This is a new trend that is popping up and can't say I hate it. The idea of traveling to gorgeous locations and capturing two people in love pretty much sounds like heaven.

So why should you consider a destination engagement session? Here are 5 reasons why a Destination Engagement session might be right for you:

1

. You don't do 'normal' - You have seen all your friends' engagement photos in beautiful fields or local city street and all you can think is 'I want something different'. You want your photos to be unique and stand out among the sea of other engagement sessions out there. If you are the kind of bride that wants to be bold and different then packing up and heading out of town might be the perfect option for you!

. Make it a couple's getaway - You and your fiancé are about to go embark on the crazy journey of planning a wedding. You are going to be bombarded with ideas, questions, well-meaning family and friends and a to-do list longer than you can imagine. So before the chaos begins, take some time to be together and soak it all in. Use your engagement session as a chance to get away and spend some quality time together. Choose a beautiful location and make a mini-vacation out of it!

3

. In place of a destination wedding - My husband and I chose to have a destination wedding when we got married. All of our family and friends still talk about how much fun it was, but while I am a big fan of destination weddings, I also realize they aren't realistic of every couple. If you have always dreamed of a saying I-do on a beach in the Bahamas, having a romantic wedding in Paris or a cozy mountain top ceremony, but it's not feasible because of finances or family, then a destination engagement session could be the perfect substitution.

4

. Work with your dream photographer - There are a ton of talented photographers all over the world. But maybe you have your sights set on one in particular....but they live on the other side of the country (or world). OR, maybe their wedding packages are out of your budget. A destination engagement session could be your chance to work with you dream photographer in THEIR location (skip their travel fees) and at a lower price point.

5

. Capture memories in a cherished place - Do you and your fiancé have a spot that is special to the two of you? Maybe it's your college alma matter, the location where he proposed or a favorite vacation spot. Capture that part of our love story in your engagement session. You don't have to travel to a whole other country to create beautiful photos is a unique location. Maybe there is something close by. For example: The images in this post were all shot in a tiny ghost town outside of the Big Bend National Park in south Texas. It didn't require an expensive flight or hotel accommodations - just a few hours in the car on a fun road trip. The possibilities are endless! Get creative, have fun and just enjoy this moment!

My passion for skin care and beauty came at a very early age – I often played with my dolls’ hair, even cut it sometimes, and had an affinity for makeup since the day I was old enough to use it. I decided to study skin care at Paul Mitchell School, mostly because I loved learning how to take care of my own problematic skin. I also wanted to learn all I could for makeup so that none of my clients would have the experience I did when I was going to prom- mismatched foundation! 10 years later, I’m still just as passionate as the day I started my cosmetology career, and I am always learning more.

It’s my passion to make my clients look and feel their best! Whether it’s for a corporate headshot or a wedding, I work with my clients and together we build a look that is personal and unique to them. I make sure that we have plenty of time for any trial sessions required.

On November 15th 2018 Uncle Willie’s Pies hosted their holiday pie party “Pie A La Crescent” at the Hotel Crescent Court in Dallas. We were able to ask owner and colleague CeCe Waites all about the event and how she felt that it aided her in reaching her mission “to inspire happier communities by connecting people to delicious desserts”.

What were you hoping that this event would help you accomplish? My goal was to have wedding social and corporate clients past present and future in a fun and interactive event. This was the opportunity to show the versatility that pie has for any event. The hotel was the perfect backdrop to show that pie can be served in a luxury setting and not limited to a rustic barn venue.

B RIA N N A DICK SON PHOTOGRA PHY

Where did your creative inspiration for the event come from? Well, of course, I used Pinterest for the initial inspiration. I also collaborated with the event designers, RAO Factor, PRP Luxury Group and planner, Simple and Chic Events, to create the final design. After our initial meeting everything really just fell into place. The color scheme was inspired by the merge of Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The trendy holiday color palette, including champagne, rose gold, emerald green, and cranberry red mirrored the luxury of the Hotel Crescent Court.

How many of your desserts were featured at this event? Which one would you say is your favorite? Which one would you say is your most popular among clients? We baked about 400 desserts. There were 4 main dessert stations. The main table, styled by Unforgettably Sweet, was all popular pies including mini sweet potato, pecan, red velvet pies, new pies like vegan coconut cream pies, gluten-free chocolate raspberry pies, apple pie pops, and pumpkin pie cheesecake cannolis. The desserts were framed by a gold backdrop (RAO Factor) and complemented by a gorgeous, larger-than-life peacock made of florals. The second station was a gingerbread house installation. The wooden A-frame ladder displayed gingerbread houses made of cherry pie. 2 Sweets Candy Buffet provided the all of the nostalgic gingerbread house candies including gummy bears and gumdrops. She styled the ladder with fake snow and giant gingerbread boy and girl.

The fourth station was catered by the hotel had a “build-your-own” savory pies, including, chicken pot pie, beef pot pie, and veggie pot pie with puff pastry crowns. PRP Luxury Group styled the VIP room where guests enjoyed their savory pies. The hotel also created a hot chocolate and apple cider bar.

What was the biggest highlight of the evening for you? The highlight of the evening was just seeing all of the guests have a great time. It all came together with the help of the amazing vendors who participated.

B RIA N N A DICK SON PHOTOGRA PHY

The highlight of the desserts was definitely the “build your own pie station”. The setup included warm peach cobbler, vanilla custard, chocolate custard, fun toppings like peppermints, caramel, Oreos, gingersnaps and pecans. The pastry chef at the hotel made two types of ice cream flavors, eggnog, and chocolate fudge. Each guest was able to fill a jar with their favorite combinations and take home as a favor.

i a ll you beautiful brides! How has wedding planning been for you? I mean, rea lly…how has planning been going for you? A re you stressed? Over whelmed? Feel like you just can’t quite get the right color pa lette in place?? Tr ust me, I know the feeling. My name is Ashlee Nicholson, and I am the owner, creative director, and lead planner of Treasured Heart Events, a wedding planning and coordination company in Fort Worth, TX. Yes, yes I know, I am a wedding planner, so it might seem a bit odd that I am the one writing this article…but let me explain. I wasn’t a lways a planner. You see, my big sister got engaged in the summer of 2014, and at the time I was a TCU Math Major with no idea how to beg in planning a wedding! So, when I say I understand the stress and over whelming feelings, I can tr uly say I experienced it f irst-hand. I want to explain to a ll of you lovely Mrs. to bes what you are missing out on if you don’t hire a wedding planner!

IM A GES B Y JA M IE B ROGDON PHOT OGRAPHY

1

YOU ACTUA LLY SPEND MOR E MONEY W HEN YOU DON’T HIR E A PL A NNER . Does this one sound counter-intuitive? I bet it does. But did you know that on average, brides spend 15%-30% (and sometimes even 50%) more than they budgeted for their wedding day!? Here’s where the planner comes in. We do weddings ever y single weekend and work on them tirelessly during the week, so we understand the rea lity of what things cost! You want top shelf a lcohol? Great, but add $3000 to your bar budget. You want specif ic f lowers that are out of season? A mazing, they’re going to look stunning, but add another $2000 to get them shipped in from the other side of the world. Do you see where I am going with this? As a planner, I a lways start with “g ive me the ma ximum number you want to spend on your wedding”, and we brea k it down from there. We g ive you rea listic numbers to look at based on your budget, and show you where you can save even more money. We a lso know which vendors will f it your pricing, style, persona lity, and can pull some strings from time to time if you love something in particular that

may not quite f it in the budget. Because we work with these vendors reg ularly, we can cover the cost of our own fee using the discounts we get you with vendors and other creative ways to reig n in on the budget. We are a lso the sounding board of reason when tough money decisions come into play. Do you rea lly need those extra-large center pieces on ever y single table in your reception? A nswer: Probably not. But we will help you f ind a way to still get the overa ll look you want at your wedding without going over budget!

2

YOU RUN THE R ISK OF H AVING A PINTER EST-R EGURGITATED W EDDING. Pinterest is an amazing source of inspiration for your wedding! Did you catch that?? Inspiration! Persona lly, I love Pinterest. I use it for just about ever y wedding when desig ning the ceremony, reception pieces, invitation desig n, and what kind of ca ke we are going to use. The issue that brides without a planner r un into though is instead of being

inspired by Pinterest photos, you end up copying them as a whole. When you copy, you lose your orig ina lity! Your voice gets lost somewhere amongst the picturesque styled table with $87 f latware next to each plate. Tr ust me, there are plenty of ways for Pinterest to help spark your creative side, but you need a planner to “ca ll you on your copy”! Those pins are so beautiful, and of course they deser ve to be there because of how specia l they are. But, let’s go one step farther…how can we utilize those photos to bring out your persona lity in your wedding? Do you and your f iancé love to drink wine together? Let’s ta lk about doing custom wine corks as a party favor! These are little things that can be missed (that you will look back on and appreciate) if you don’t hire a planner to help you push past the urge to mimic those Pinterest pictures!

I know, this is a TON of information, and a LOT to think about, but that’s why planners do what we do! We are there for you to help you through the most joyful time in your life, and we ma ke it FUN for you the whole way! We keep numbers in mind, but a lso keep love at the center of it a ll. We ma ke sure your day is a ll about YOU and your future HUSBA ND, and who knows…you might just gain a life-long friend a long the way!

JAMIE BROGDO N PH OT OGR APHY

FA MILY PEACE GOES OUT THE W INDOW. Yep, I know this one from experience. If you are a bride (or a sister of the bride tr ying to help her out) money ta lks, style types, and food preferences are going to g rind some gears in the process! As a planner, I have seen this SO many times, and planners often have g reat recommendations to keep ever yone happy! Here is an example for you: I had a bride who wanted a clean, elegant, and neutra l wedding. She dreamed of white and cream f lora ls, white linens, g ray napkins, and simple center pieces. Beautiful! Great ideas, it’s going to be gorgeous! Hold the phone…momma has a few different ideas. Ver y different ideas. Mom wanted lots of pops of color, big elaborate center pieces, colorful napkins, the whole she-bang. A lso, so beautiful! A lso, g reat ideas! However, this is polar opposite of what the bride was envisioning! When you have a planner, they can rea lly combine both ideas to keep the peace, but still g ive both sides what they want! Here is where we landed: bridesmaids in mauve, g roomsmen in black suits, white table linens, mauve napkins with gold chargers, only white f lowers for the bride and g room, a few pops of color in the bouquets for the bridesmaids and mauve-infused boutonnières for the g roomsmen, one-fourth of the arrangements were ta ll statements and threefourths of the arrangements were sma ll and simple! When I showed them these ideas, they both loved it! Planners have the ability to objectively look at a ll the ideas, compare them with wedding trends, and show you something that tr uly ma kes ever yone happy on wedding day (not to mention…a lso in budget!)

is going to ma ke sure it a ll happens the way you planned it when the big day arrives? When you don’t hire a planner (or at least a month of coordinator), your mom, MOH, or family friend ends up tr ying to set ever ything up, bugg ing you multiple times when you are tr ying to get your hair and ma keup done to check their work, and panicking you when the f lorist is 20 minutes late with the bouquets and center pieces. When you hire a planner, you free up a ll of your loved ones to a lso enjoy your wedding celebration just as much as you will! No one is stuck with “trash duty” or “play our ceremony music for us”, planners have you covered and a lso have the experience to do it well! Not to mention, when you don’t have a planner, your photog rapher norma lly ends up doing both jobs, which means they can’t fully devote their attention to your photos!

hitney and Nathan were such a fun couple to work with! Their wedding was full of details, including a purple infused color palette. The couple met at TCU and have been in love with each other and the color purple every since. The bride was absolutely stunning and the groom embraced his purple bowtie, in all it’s glory. The Springs Venue, Tuscany Hill, was beautiful and versatile for this outdoor ceremony and indoor reception. The reception had such fun details, and most importantlythe most delicious sweets by Amuse Bake Shop. Vella Nest Floral provided florals that perfectly captured the brides vision and they were stunning. From beginning to exit the wedding was so beautiful!

rendan and I met 10 years ago the day we got married. We were high school sweethearts, went through college, and all life events growing up. We laugh all the time, one of our good friends still to this day, texted us both on our first “date” to the mall and said you guys are going to get married. We looked at each other like he was crazy,

look at us now. Shortly after Brendan graduated from TCU, we got our very first fur baby Cooper, a golden retriever. Brendan had the idea of us going to go get professional pictures done for a Christmas card along the trinity river in Fort Worth, little did I know he really set that up for his proposal. I was shocked! Of course, I said YES! We enjoyed our engagement time together as long as we could before we started planning our dream wedding. Two years later we started looking at venues. After looking at just a couple R&R Whiskey Ranch has both of our hearts. It felt like us. Super elegant, but still had just the right amount of a Texas feel to it. Not to mention, TX has been one of our favorite cocktail drinks forever. It’s like it was meant to be! 10 months later it was October 6, 2018. OUR WEDDING DAY! I don’t think it could’ve been a more beautiful day. The weather was PERFECT, the florist had done such an incredible job, my dad built our wedding arch and donut wall with his bare hands. It was so nice to finally see it all done up and ready. The golf course was absolutely stunning with a view of downtown Fort Worth for our guests to look at past us as well. The reception room was just a walk away along with the cocktail room for cocktail hour which was a plus to have while the wedding party and family took pictures. They didn’t feel like they had to wait. Meanwhile, after the pictures were done. Brendan and I got to have just a couple minutes to ourselves before we walked out and got announced as Mr. & Mrs. Wagner in what the venue called the library. Which was a beautiful little room where they have tons of antique bottles of whiskey from 100 years ago in class cases with a crystal chandelier with a Texas twist of calf hair chairs and a wooden table. By the time we walked out and had our first dance and had our toast and cutting the cake it was my favorite time to DANCE! The dance floor fit everyone perfectly! With so much going on, my photographer got just the right pictures to capture this night and I will forever cherish them. Everyone was amazed with the venue and commented that this is by far one of the weddings they have ever been too! Which made me think ALL MY HARD WORK HAS PAID OFF!

reanna and Eamon’s wedding at The Orchard Event Venue in Azle, TX had all the makings of a fairytale wedding with hints of southern farmhouse charm and tradition that made it truly remarkable. The bride knew she wanted to get married in a place where less was more but was also full of character, so when the couple found a venue that offered both acres of beautifully manicured land with wild farm animals and a large reception area with a covered plaza, they were sold! The talented venue team took care of nearly every detail, from wedding setup to photobooth, and helped make the day go off without a hitch. Their wedding was airy, bright, and the perfect balance of rustic touches and fun details like custom cocktail napkins and nuptials. No detail went unnoticed with Sabel Moments Photography, who captured the magic of this southern fairytale wedding in every frame! The ceremony took place outside, next to a pristine pond and under the property’s gazebo. With hints of lavender and baby’s breath, the natural beauty took center stage as Breanna and Eamon exchanged vows. Customized with the help of Love Notes, they were

able to piece a unique ceremony together that fit both their personalities and traditions. Eamon being Persian, the couple participated in The Honey Ceremony which represents the sweetness of life. As well as sweetness, honey also represents sustenance and all good things that couples would want for each other during their lives together. Sealed with a kiss, the Bridal party took advantage of the most perfect wedding day with beautiful photos to cherish for a lifetime, while guests enjoyed a cocktail hour. The Happiest Hour began with a live Mariachi band, appetizers and drinks. Before everyone enjoyed dinner, Breanna and Eamon introduced their Bridal Party to guests and had their first dance to Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. This was followed by father/daughter dance to I Loved Her First and son/mother dance to What a Wonderful World. Dinner was Tex-Mex themed on behalf of local restaurant Los Vaqueros: complete with Brisket tacos, chicken enchiladas and rice and beans. The 200 guests enjoyed every inch of The Orchard’s Venue and customization thanks to Rey Bethea’s beautiful flower arrangements. Buffet dinner was followed by delicious cake thanks to Amanda Mobley Cake Studio; which entailed strawberry and funfetti flavors. DJ Rick with Mobile DJ Services kept everyone on the dance floor for the remainder of the night. He played everything from traditional Persian and Spanish music to crowd favorites like Bruno Mars and Journey. The night ended with one final, special moment between the newlyweds as they enjoyed one final dance on the empty dance floor of The Orchard as guests prepared for a sparkler send off.

arah & Craig got married at the Bella Woods Wedding & Event Venue Sky Chapel. A white chapel that is located next to the large reception barn. “I chose my venue because they had an indoor chapel! I was set on an indoor wedding and wanted our ceremony and reception at the same site, but I did not want them to take place in the same room,” says Sarah. The chapel, which is filled with white pews, a stage for the ceremony, and tall windows on the side of the aisles, was the perfect venue for a Sarah & Craig’s romantic ceremony. Which was filled with plenty of emotional & fun moments, but one of the most memorable was when Craig saw Sarah for the first time. “My favorite moment was seeing Craig for the first time. I will never forget the moment the chapel doors opened, and I saw him standing at the altar.’ Says Sarah. I promise you there was not a dry eye in the chapel that is for sure!

As the couple took pictures at the church, the guests headed to the barn for the reception and found their name on a tall framed seating chart with blush floral designs on each card. As guests walked into the reception, they found their seat reception room filled with a mixture of round and long tables, each with acrylic table numbers. At the center of the reception was the head table with a long chiffon runner, lush floral garland, beaded chargers, and the bride and groom’s chairs had green and white flowers on the back. All the tables had champagne linens, champagne chiavari chairs, and each place setting had a menu with the couple’s monogram and a chiffon ribbon that wrapped around each menu. To the right of the room, there was a epic dessert bar that was filled with lemon bars, cookies & kolaches! When it was time to leave guests held sparklers as the bride and groom kissed under a tunnel of sparkler lights right outside the barn’s entry. It was the perfect end to a romantic night!

ou know when you work in the event industry, you see what’s most important for a wedding. For us, that was celebrating our love with eighty close family and friends. We wanted to keep our wedding intimate, unique and on budget. So we decided to have a courthouse-ish, pop-up wedding in honor of Darren’s mom and our grandmothers in their memory. We got married on my mother-in-love’s Rochealle Waites’ heavenly birthday. We had just laid her to rest in January and it was an emotional time for both of us. It all fell into place, her favorite holiday was Easter and we got married on Good Friday. How amazing is that?! The decor was inspired by my love for sentimental, vintage details including our childhood photos. Flowers were inspired by my grandmother, Grace Wallace-Williams’ favorite flower which was tulips, and Darren’s grandmother, Bobbie

Waites’ favorite color was blue. We just kept it simple. We skipped the stress of a wedding party. The centerpiece florals were only on the head table. The sunset ceremony was held on the hotel’s patio and the cocktail reception was in the hotel restaurant. Our gift registry was a simple honeymoon fund box. It was wonderful! No stress, just fun. With the help of my wedding industry family, we were able to pull it off. Kudos to you! Thank you for your talents and generosity! You made our little wedding much more than we could’ve ever imagined!

ndrea and Kyle got married on a beautiful Texas April day at Thistle Springs Ranch in Cleburne, TX. Set amidst the native wildflowers, lush cedars, and roaming thistles of Central Texas, Thistle Springs Ranch provided a wedding backdrop in their vintage, provincial barn constructed of reclaimed barnwood, antiqued tin, and classic elements. Lush, sherbert colored flowers adorned the thistle alter and the bride and groom couldn’t be more in love!

e met in college, but we were attending rival colleges in the same town. He played tennis at McMurry University in Abilene. I ran track at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. We met through mutual friends, but didn’t reconnect until 7-8 years down the road. I had finished law school and was practicing in Abilene. He had gotten his master’s degree in Accounting, and was teaching/coaching at Lovejoy High school in the DFW area. He added me on Facebook about 2 years on Facebook....and I immediately remembered who he was--the dreamy, tall, tan, and hilarious guy I met in college 7 years ago. While I knew and remembered exactly who he was, I played shy and sent him a message on Facebook saying, “Remind me again how I know you.” Let’s just say, he fell for my opening line

Our wedding was at the most beautiful venue we’ve ever laid eyes on, the white southern mansion of Parker Manor in Weatherford, Texas. Our wedding style would best be described as southern classic/elegant, I loved the simplicity of neutral bridesmaid dresses paired with timeless black tuxes for groomsmen. I wanted to look back at my wedding pictures in 25+ years and see the classic, timeless look, instead of the trendy type decor that comes and goes with the seasons. As a couple, we strive to keep Christ the center of our marriage, so we thought it would be special to share communion together during our wedding ceremony. We personalized most of the wedding day. Monogrammed cocktail napkins, oversized monogram as the centerpiece of the fire place mantle, cake topper monogram, cherry groomsmen socks (our last name is Cherry), and many other personalized details throughout the day.

and we talked non-stop for the next 3 months. Around New Year’s Eve, he told me that he wanted to officially date me, but I told him I wasn’t interested in anything serious because I had gotten my heart broken time after time...his response: “Don’t worry, you’ll change your mind after I’m through with you.” I laughed at his overly confident statement, but something about him intrigued me....so I played along with his texts. Less than 1 year later, he proposed to me on the footsteps of McKinney courthouse in downtown McKinney (I’m a lawyer and he knew this would be special to me). After he proposed, he told me he was so excited, but was also sad because he knew how important my family was to me, but they couldn’t make it…once again, he’s full of jokes. My entire family was hiding at Harvest (amazing steakhouse where we had one of our first dates) across the street from the McKinney Courthouse. Adam planned every detail and for the first time in my life, I was speechless.

VE NU E | BL A I NE S TONE L OD G E It is said that it’s good luck for it to rain on your wedding day. If that is true, we have buckets and buckets of luck. Although the rain threatened to spoil our event throughout the day, our venue coordinator, Leslie, and deejay, DJ Mike of Toast Entertainment, used their adaptability and amazing communication to shuffle our timeline around to create a seamless wedding reception. The new flow kept everyone happy, especially the most important person: the bride. As we think back on our wedding day, it is impossible for both of us not to smile in pure joy. Not only because it was the best day of our lives so far (yes, we are still in the honeymoon stage), but because every little detail is something we never want to forget. Luckily for us, we selected the best wedding photographer we could have asked for. Anna, from Anna’s Photography, found all of the picture-perfect moments and even threw down some dance moves of her own while snapping shots of our raging party! The unique event opportunities we had during our reception at Blaine Stone Lodge were the talk of the town for weeks. From the ability to have a group photo of the entire reception to the balcony bouquet toss, our family and friends were in awe. What really had our guest’s gushing was how “hyped” the dance party was due to the bride and groom’s dance moves and to the impeccable music provided by DJ Mike that had everyone rocking the dance floor the entire night. That is, when they weren’t salivating over the evening’s delicious main course, provided by Blaine Stone Lodge, and the unique and always delectable cupcakes from Biloxi, Mississippi’s very own Cheeky Monkey Bakery. With such an incredible wedding reception there was truly only one way to end the night--with a bang! Well many bangs, as our night concluded with a firework show over the lake, which made for breathtaking photos and an epic exit to end our unforgettable day.
