Marriage Tips and Advice
An old Brazilian saying states, “ If advice were good, no one would give it out for free”. Marriage tips are a dime a dozen. After many hours of pre-marital counselling, the best take-away : set good boundaries and patterns during the first year. The first year sets up the stage for a lifetime. So, solely commit to the bare necessities. Work, school ( finish as soon as possible), family gatherings, church to name a few. Cut back on extra activities and focus on establishing desired patterns. Go easy on “girl’s” or “guy’s” nights, dinner with friends and extra commitments at work or on the weekends. Side note : this will also save money. We see this concept in ancient history. Men were not to go to war during their first year of marriage, nor were any extra duties added to his responsibilities. Rather, he was to stay home and be with his new bride. My husband and I heeded this wise counsel. A decade later, we can still gauge when our life is off balance. Perhaps somewhat like a proverbial compass, we can sense when things are on their way to spinning out of control, long before we are totally distraught. We can look at our “compass” and head in the right direction. Had we not practiced this early on, we would not have even detected when we were “off”. It isn’t even something you can put your finger on, just “off”, out of sync.

SO CIAL
The fact of the matter is that this will happen; it happens to everyone. The key is found in the ability to recognize It. The wisdom lies in re-prioritizing to regain proper bearings. Like a compass. If balance is an unknown phenomenon, then imbalance may seem normal. Life is a balancing act . As careers change, income fluctuates, or kids arrive and so on, it is important to maintain and know when things are out of equilibrium.

I have learned a lot about weddings from being a wedding photographer for over 10 years in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and I know there is still a lot to learn. Early in my career, my ultimate goal was to open a wedding venue, however after spending time getting to know my brides, countless hours editing photographs, networking, and being able to work with some of the best wedding professionals in the area, I was inspired to move in a different direction. The knowledge and relationships gained in those years brought me to this exciting horizon in my career. I value the power of networking and I’ve seen firsthand the virtue in being a “connector”. When I started Southern Wedding Professionals, I knew those around me would help guide and support me when I needed them. I can’t thank you all enough for sticking with me. After moving to Ellis County in 2016, I started to focus on building relationships with venues and vendors in our area. There are well over 25 venues in Ellis County alone. Southern Wedding Professionals hosted their first bridal show, The Southern Social, in February 2018 at The Midlothian Conference Center. My goal is to showcase our venues south of DFW and help promote wedding professionals from all over the metroplex by offering this beautiful magazine for brides, as well as online advertising, hosting The Southern Social bridal show twice a year, and collaborating with the best wedding professionals by putting together some amazing styled shoots. I am very honored to be able to work in an industry with so many talented and creative professionals and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

THE BEGINNING:
Paige has known Alex since high school and met through her best friend and his cousin, Kelley, but did not connect until
2016. Alex proposed on New Year’s Eve while they were out to dinner at The Refuge Steak House with friends in The Woodlands, Texas. She was completely surprised and has the whole thing on video! A FORMAL AFFAIR: I wanted an elegant and formal affair with all of our favorite people. Everyone looked stunning in their best attire while we celebrated our love, drank fancy cocktails and danced the night away! The greenery along with all the white flowers made a statement in itself – it brought an organic freshness to the room, which I loved! My colors were black, white and blush. LOCATION: Firefly Gardens had everything we were looking for. One stop shop for a full day wedding experience. Have you seen the back windows of the venue? Absolutely amazing! The all white and the fresh landscape really captured the fairytale wedding I wanted to have. DINNER IS SERVED:
We provided a choice between Salmon with Rice Pilaf and Green Bean Almondine, and Pecan Crusted Chicken with
Scalloped Potatoes and Green Bean Almondine with a white chocolate cake with butter cream with raspberry puree.

SPECIAL MOMENT: My favorite part of the wedding was after the ceremony – a moment with my husband as we took a deep breath and just felt overwhelmed with excitement, love and pure happiness. Minutes after, we were greeted by our closest family and friends before walking back into the reception and announced as husband and wife – the energy in the room was out of this world!!! Our first dance was also too good to not call a favorite – we didn’t rehearse one bit, danced to Jason Aldean’s ‘You Make It Easy’ and nailed it! ADVICE: Don’t do it yourself – find someone who shares your vision and trust. For me, it was my mom, but two minds are definitely better than one when planning for such an important day. Enjoy it – it is your wedding day so cry if you want, but don’t sweat the small stuff. I promise - it is not worth it.

As soon as I saw Stonebridge Venue, I knew I wanted to feature its amazing outdoor areas such as the oak tree, the creek, the river, and their gorgeous walkway through the trees. I instantly thought that a summer garden wedding would be a perfect way to show off the beautiful outdoor and kick off wedding season with bright florals, bright colors, and with gold accents. Rachel, with Alba Dahlia Floral, did such an amazing job with the florals for this shoot. Her choice of flowers made perfect sense with what I envisioned. From the

I’m sure you have sent your future fiancée your Pinterest board with your favorite ring styles as suggestions for when he is ready to propose. Or maybe while on a date you took him window shopping, so he might have paid attention to what you showed him? Your engagement ring is a symbol of your commitment to each other. Choosing something to wear on your finger for the rest of your life should be fun, not stressful. After all, it will all be part of your love story you tell your grandchildren. Some brides have always known what type of ring and style they want, but if you are like me, indecisive or fickle, this can leave you with high anxiety. A round-cut solitaire, a halo oval design, or maybe even a having a pink sapphire instead of a traditional diamond? What is on your finger most likely sets the tone for your wedding and shows off your personality. You can choose to go timeless with a prong-set solitaire. That is as classic as it gets. I’m willing to bet that your planning a simple yet stylish wedding. Maybe you aren’t so traditional and you have gorgeous Morganite stone set in a diamond halo with a rose gold band? I’m thinking your wedding will be more boho and very unique with special touches. While researching engagement rings online and narrowing down your choices, nothing beats shopping

I always like to joke to my couple’s about how awesome and ‘brave’ they are to pick me as their wedding photographer ‘out of a gazillion other options’ they had. No, really! As a vendor in the wedding industry, I feel like the ratio of photographers vs all other vendors outsize all others nationwide! You can randomly wave your hand in the air for 5 seconds at a vendor gathering and accidentally bump into 48 wedding photographers (nobody else!)! (LOL!) We know, with so many options it can be VERY overwhelming!
#1 - BOOK YOUR VENUE FIRST Most vendors cannot sign a contract with you unless you have your venue and date set in stone
to shift and change things because we might be booked for your new date. So before looking into anything else - lock down your venue(s)!
First thing’s first - set your priorities. Photos and videos are the only thing that really stay long years after your wedding and it is important that you set a budget for it. For more realistic expectations, doing a little research on wedding websites by setting a budget range, you can get a general idea of what you can expect within your budget, or if you need to readjust your budgeting on certain things. After you set your budget, now it is time to find those photographers who make your heart palpitate with their images. Some are light and airy, some are dark and moody, some are in between (like me) - which I like to call myself, “organic”. Make
a list of the photographers you think will be a good fit. Then do a deeper research: lookup their reviews online, look through their website, stalk them on Facebook and Instagram! Narrow down your choices so you can start sending out inquiries and start your phone consultations. I promise, there is a photographer for everyone with every style and budget - and you have just done most of the hard work!
#3 - FIND SOMEONE YOU NOT ONLY LIKE, BUT LOVE When a bride or groom-to-be contacts me, the first thing I tell them is “let’s chat on the phone to get to know each other better!” Since they already have basic knowledge on my pricing, that phone call is not meant to be “let’s talk money and legal stuff ” - it is solely for them to get to know me, my personality, my life and vice versa! After all, we photographers and videographers are the one’s who start the day with you and finish it with you.
SOU T H E R NWE DDI NG PRO S . C OM
2 0 1 8
#2 - DO YOUR RESEARCH
SUMME R
- in case your date changes due to the unavailability of the venue you want, we may not be able
We are there when you ugly cry with your girls after putting on your dress, often reminding you “Hey hey! Now that makeup’s to hold up until the ceremony!” (hahaha!), we are there when you see your bride walking down the isle - trying to look cool, but barely holding it together… We are there when you can’t help but smile like nobody else’s business, holding hands at the alter while vowing for the rest of your lives together… We are there when you drink a little too much and lose it on the dance floor, showing everyone else how it is really done… We are there when you runaway from the party, holding hands, having a few minutes in private - trying to acknowledge “Holy purple cow! We just got married!”… We are there AT ALL TIMES. So yeah, it is important that you like our personality as much as you love our work! It is important that we like you back too! Personally, my first motivation is not money. Sure it is great to be able to live an independent life - but I know myself, I cannot be stuck with a bunch of people I have no emotional connection for 8+ hours! It is important to me that we lay our cards out before anything else and set “real” expectations to avoid any conflict in the future.
I asked some of my couples to tell me more about how they decided to book their photographer
“Can you fill me in about your process? Like, how did you first get a hold of me? How did you decide to go with me? What was “the biggest reason” you can advice other brides who are just starting planning?”
“First, I asked publicly for recommendations, stalked people’s wedding pictures and decided those weren’t the folks for me. Then I got on various wedding websites/social media platforms
|| T H E
and did some serious digging on everyone that was in my price range (and some that were so NOT in my price range), until I found your photos- they spoke to me... those were the kinds

don’t like your personality then you weren’t the photographer for me... I was SOLD, that’s my
of images I want on my big day. Aside from your beautiful work- when you told me that if I
WOMAN. The most important advice I would give a bride is to find the vendors that work well with your style... you can’t change who you are, and the process is so much better if you’re with people you enjoy and communicate well with.” (Melissa R. - Tulsa, OK)
#4 - LISTEN TO YOUR HEART Sometimes your perfect photographer may not be that super popular photographer everybody is talking about. Sometimes it might be someone who has just been in the industry for 2-3 years. Sometimes it’s that new photographer who recently moved to the area. I’m not saying “Go hire a newbie” - oh no, that is another topic to talk about (I always have newbies reach out to me and I’ll always keep advising them to assist and/or even third shoot for seasoned photographers first - then go and fly with their own wings!) but don’t be scared to give them a chance, talk to them on the phone or meet them in person.
“You know how I always joke to you about being SO BRAVE and picking me when I had just moved here and had absolutely no solid ground in DFW? What impacted your decision given the fact there are way too many photographers out there? How did you start your search and came to make a decision?”

“When I first started looking for photographers, it was like a sea of options: between Google searches and recommendations from The Knot, there were almost too many photographers to choose from, and many of them had similar portfolios. Every detail of our wedding was carefully planned to represent us specifically. I didn’t want just another “Pinterest” wedding that looked like it could belong to anyone, and I didn’t want my wedding photos to look that way either. I wanted a photographer who would take the time to understand what I like, especially since I don’t enjoy traditional poses or feel comfortable modeling for the camera. It was important to find someone fun and friendly with a unique portfolio, and we accidentally stumbled upon your website during our search. What finally made my decision was your story about moving here from Turkey, and I instantly fell in love with your astro-love photos. Your bio talked a lot about your own life, your development as a photographer, and your commitment to getting to know your brides. That was huge for me. I assumed that if you were comfortable enough to share a piece of your life with potential clients, you probably enjoyed getting to know other people as well. My decision ultimately came down to choosing someone with a fun, unique portfolio and an amazing personality, and you had both! I am so happy I

SUMME R
#5 - QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY
2 0 1 8
find a photographer who can help make your day unique and a photographer that is fun,
The number of photos, or the number of products you get within your choice of package is not everything. You can always get quality prints, anytime after your wedding - even if it’s years and years later. But you can’t get everything back together to replay your wedding day with a different photographer. It is important that you pick someone with knowledge and experience, who knows how to use light and create a great composition. We all work hard to earn our money, and you deserve the best for the time and money you put in!
#6 - KNOW YOUR LIGHTING SITUATION Now, I’m about to get a little bit technical but it is very important that you know what exactly you need and that if your dream photographer is tough enough to handle it. If your wedding is during the day, with the perfect open shade reflecting natural light - no need to read further for this part. But, if you have a dark church/chapel ceremony, if your party is going to be after dark fall, you need to consider a photographer that knows off-camera flash and can work with any lighting situation, regardless if your venue has tall white walls or no walls (hello outdoor reception!) - even if this means shooting in complete dark. Now is that possible? Yes! It is important to know what the photographer you are considering is capable of. I’ve seen so many disappointed brides because their photographer had amazing daylight photos but failed at their low-light wedding/reception. Now there are some situations where regardless of how experienced the photographer is, they won’t be able to use their skills - aka church rules. Most churches don’t allow flash photography during the ceremony, and unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about it. That is where we rely on our gear and how good they’re in low light situations. But in any other situations we should be able to manipulate the light and get you “the best of the best” images. Think ahead and ask to see examples of different light situations. In theory, we all are awesome photographers - but in practice, ask for proof!

#7 - VIEW REAL WEDDING GALLERIES Once you narrow down your options to where you can set in-person meetings, make sure to ask if you can see real weddings. I put my best of the best photos online - because there’s no way I can fit EVERY wedding I’ve shot on my website, or any other social media site. Technically - we can fit it in, but nobody, not at least at their first glimpse, is going to look at all of them one by one! I prefer to show off and tell “This is what you should expect” during the in-person meeting, as the couple and I have already invested some time in each other. I also bring some albums with me - so they can touch and feel how they are like… Which will bring me to #7…
#8 - KNOW WHAT EXACTLY YOU ARE GETTING FOR WHAT YOU ARE PAYING This is a saturated market and we photographers have way too many different packages to choose from. Again, set your priorities! Is your wedding very small, short and sweet? Maybe 50-80 people, and 5-6 hours max? Perfect! One photographer will be enough… Is it a bigger guest list and a longer day? You should consider two photographers - two assure everything is taken care of. Do you want an engagement session? (Which I always say, this is a trial run with your photographer. Nobody is a natural born magazine model and we can get awkward in front of the camera! The best way to avoid any camera shyness are those engagement sessions! Now that you know what you want/need - see if the packages you are looking at include these. Does the package include digitals or prints? Do you get an album or do you have to purchase that separately? What does the albums look like? Can you customize them? Can you print your photos on your own, or do you have to print through your photographer? Don’t be shy to ask questions! It is very important prior to signing the contract and putting down the retainer that you know what you are getting. This will avoid any future conflicts!
#9 - TURN-AROUND TIME The wedding is over, the cake slices didn’t last 5 minutes, everybody danced the night away, now what? Every photographer, depending on how booked they are and how they post-process their photos, have different turn-around times. Just like anything else - make sure you talk this ahead of time so you
know when to expect your photos. I typically give a “6-8 weeks after the wedding” time frame and let my clients know if anything extraordinary is going on. If nothing, I always post some sneak peeks so they don’t have to wait “forever” to see some of the best photos from their day!
#10 - HAVE LOTS OF FUN! This is the final and most important thing of all things wedding planning - not just photography wise - HAVE LOTS OF FUN ON YOUR BIG DAY! Things may go wrong, maybe the cake got poked by your little nephew, maybe the electricity went out and the generator did not kick in for 5 seconds during your vows. Maybe you chipped your nail or stepped in mud. It really doesn’t matter! What matters is how much fun you had! At that moment, small things are going to look like “this is it! Everything is ruined!” But believe me none of your family or friends will agree with you and all will say “Let’s keep this party going!” Don’t sweat the small things - look at the bigger picture! You just took your first step to your new chapter for the rest of your life, with your other half and loved one’s next to you!

The wedding was on October 14, 2017. A beautiful Fall day in the perfect setting. Shelby & her bridal party were very chill and relaxed. They sipped champagne in the bridal suite while getting ready.
There was an excited buzz in the air as vendors came in to prepare for the big day. Shelby’s style was different. The hoops the bridesmaids carried doubled as wall decor after the ceremony. I hung them up on the cedar posts inside for the reception portion of the evening.
Shelby’s wedding and style was the perfect example of making a ranch venue more versatile. It was less rustic and more chic. The colors she chose really pulled out the beautiful scenery of the venue.
The reception was just as fun as the Wedding! Between the pizza truck and donuts to the funny speeches at the end of the night, it all represented the couple well. It was a my joy and honor to help them create a day they would remember the rest of their lives. - J.P.

Tommy and I met when we were 17 years old during our junior year of high school at a Relay For Life walk in Southlake, TX. We had a mutual friend who he went to school with and I went to church with at the event. T he three of us spent the evening walking around the track and talking. I of course thought Tommy was so cute and tall, but wouldn’t dare to let him know that at that time. He added me on facebook and we didn’t talk again. Fast forward to our senior year, we both decided we were going to go to Texas Tech University after graduation. Our mutual friend from Relay for Life suggested we all three hang out so that Tommy and I could “have a friend” at Tech. This is when our real friendship started. We spent a lot of time together our freshman year. Grocery shopping, watching teen mom

and driving to the middle of nowhere to look at the stars. Everyone around me told me Tommy was doing these things because he wanted to date, but love is blind and I insisted we were just friends…for the next 5 years. After graduating from TTU I went to grad school and Tommy moved back to Southlake for a job. I suddenly found myself wondering why we had been “just friends” for the last 5 years. During my Christmas break from grad school we were hanging out as just friends when Tommy conquered the friend zone. He kissed me under the stars in a pasture while we were feeding his horses, the same place he proposed to me 18 months later in the candle light under string lights and stars. Our wedding was magical with all of our friends and family surrounding us. Even my favorite president George W Bush was there to witness the beginning of our marriage, and end of the friend zone. -Shelby

Our wedding was perfection, a dream come true! And we couldn’t have done it without our family, friends, and amazing vendors! When Colton purposed we were over the moon excited, then we got a little overwhelmed with all the decisions we had to make! We had a date picked and only 5 months to pull our wedding together! With the help of Melissa Shook and Southern Wedding Professionals we had a jump start. Melissa provided a vendor list we knew we could rely on. Growing up in Ellis County it was important to us to use local vendors and keep our wedding in the area. The theme had been decided, Classy Country Chic. We wanted an elegant look on a budget. When we connected with Susan Baker from Bliss Event Management, we knew we were in good hands. Susan have every little detail figured out from décor ideas to the day of timeline. On the big day my mom and myself truly got to enjoy the day knowing Susan and her team had everything under control.
The big day had finally arrived, and Old Bison Ranch did not disappoint! There was plenty of room for all our guests and then some! Having a March wedding could have gone in many directions, but we got lucky and had the outstanding weather for an outdoor wedding. Old Bison Ranch has a picturesque setting with the water behind us and the largest, most gorgeous tree to give us shade. Inside for the reception the vision of Classy Country Chic came to life, with soft lighting, some lace and mason jars, a classic cake by Doolee’s, a hint of sparkle, and all our favorite people we had done it! - Haleigh, bride

T heir wedding day design was exactly like the couple, natural and laid back! The bride, who normally doesn’t wear any makeup at all, went with a natural glowing look with gold tones and because it was so windy that day, they decided to do a soft braid adorned with greenery and flowers. It worked perfectly with the look of the wedding! The venue is natural and organic, soft and pretty and Kaylee went with colors that matched the venue. Whites, greens, soft pinks and succulents were the main colors but the crowning jewel was her lace dress that looked like it was made for her! The White Fiore planned it beautifully and the day was so special. The wind made the five oaks ceremony spot look magical, straight out of a fairy tale. And the perfect sunset made for fabulous romantic formals! Kaylee and Joe are just magic together and we were so thankful we got to be there to capture their day! - Allison, Silver Bear Creative
Joe and Kaylee are truly two of the kindest, most laid back people I have had the chance of meeting which made for the easiest and best day ever. Their day couldn’t have been filled with more love and joy. Joe and Kaylee have such a sweet love for each other and that love overflowed into the love they had for each guest in attendance. Joe literally couldn’t stop giving Kaylee the sweetest neck kisses evidence of the joy he had in marrying Kaylee. The dance floor was never empty and no one wanted the party stop! It was easily hands down one of the most fun, joy filled receptions I have ever seen. I’m sure Joe, Kaylee and their guests will never forget that gorgeous day! - Jessica, The White Fiore

preface anything having to do with Laura and Jason with the fact that these two were both zoo keepers who met at the zoo! They worked on the same exhibits and quickly fell in love! Like what? How perfect is that?! We also just love that their dog, Aria, was the ring bearer. As we usually do, we began the day photographing all of Laura’s details. This is something that often gets overlooked but we think is so important. The morning was filled with lots of laughter as the bride and groom got ready for the big event! The ceremony was beautiful and vows were said with tears in their eyes. The event was sealed with a kiss and off they went! Then it was time to party! There were toasts, dances, and the most delicious cake. They concluded the night with a sparkler exit down the long white bridge. We were so honored to be their photographers and there is no doubt Jason and Laura will live happily ever after! - Amanda, Gingersnap Studios

and the venue had beautiful barn doors that perfectly framed us during our vows. The reception hall made us feel like we were still outdoors with tons of windows letting the natural light (and sunset) flood in. While planning our wedding I decided really early on that I wanted our day to be very personalized to us and also very fluid; I wanted it to feel very natural in the details. From the flower arch hung across the barn door arches, to a crown of flowers on my head, to bouquets that had lots of movement and drapery greenery, we tried to highlight the little things. Although it was a pretty warm day, we had cloud cover and a nice breeze for the entire duration of the ceremony which was such a blessing. The sun came back out minutes after the ceremony ended. We tried to make every decision intentionally in order to really highlight the two of us and our personalities. - Blythe, bride

shapes and colors"
MODERN RUSTIC IMAGES B Y | MAC KA PHOTO G R A PHY For this styled shoot, we wanted to have fun playing with different geometric shapes while also incorporating delicate details. From the gorgeous custom honeycomb wall, fun geometric invitation suite and elegant hairpiece details, we wanted to speak to the brides out there who aren’t afraid to play with shapes and colors, but also desire to keep a classic feel to their wedding! Rentals from Sugar Creek Vintage Rentals gave us the most beautiful backdrop for the ceremony, and paper suite from Brown Fox Creative helped play up the geometric pieces. Something You Makeup and Hair gave our model a classic braid and natural makeup to speak to the classic side of brides, while Kate McLeod delivered elegant and simple floral elements to our shoot! - Ashlee, Treasured Hearts Events
