THE ART OF LIVING WELL BY DANN FOLEY

This month at The Standard we are celebrating a summer of Arts & Entertainment. Frankly, I could not have chosen a better editorial theme for the month myself! It is like a gift to me because I love entertaining! Summer entraining is really one of my favorite things because I love showing my clients and friends how to be casual and still sophisticated.

• Coordinate the invitation with the feeling of the home/ theme of the party. I like to choose a color theme to begin. The invitation is a sneak peak into the style of the event. Shop www.zazzle.com for fun, fully customizable invitations. They even have magnetic invites for your guests to post on the refrigerator so they don’t forget the date!

At Dann Inc. we are always finishing up or installing projects we have been working on all year in time for summer. And what is the first thing someone wants to do after redecorating? They want to have a party to share it all with friends and loved ones. I have planned more housewarming parties than I care to remember. Making sure each is memorable, fun, relaxing and delicious is key. To get it right I like to entice all of the senses and a great mix of personalities. Even the most humble of BBQ’s can be orchestrated.

If you are thinking Green try, www.punchbowl.com for earth friendly online invitations that are also customizable and you can manage your guest list and responses all from one site.

So, how do you throw the perfect house party? You must know by now that I am here to share my best tips and tricks to ensure you are the perfect host/hostess. I promise you this; it is easier than it looks. Here are some of my surefire elements and go-to details that have worked wonders for me at reveal parties and will make you a star of your own!

6 THESTANDARDPS.COM

• I like to design a shirt or t-shirt for the waiters and bartenders to wear. The easiest example is the homeowner’s monogram done in a fun, simple and sophisticated graphic. www.customink.com has many styles of shirts and lots of design templates as well as online help, with NO order minimums! • Create a signature cocktail for the home/evening. Any bartender worth his weight can work with you to create a specialty drink to serve your guests upon arrival. You can match the monogram on the invitation to note cards printed with the cocktail recipe for

guests to take with them at the end of the night. This little detail is a sure hit, every time! Search www.webtender.com for help on creating signature cocktails. • Plan a menu that fits the style of the home and the event. Cocktails, buffet or BBQ, the style doesn’t matter, it’s the execution that makes the difference. Summer calls for less fussy food but that doesn’t mean it has to be less sophisticated. Take the basics and learn to “up market”. Step out of the ordinary, think gourmet burgers with herbs and chesses on the inside, artisan breads over hamburger buns or filets on the grill with homemade BBQ sauce on garlic bread, orzo salad with fresh dill and shrimp and a vinaigrette coleslaw with parsley and onion…I have lots of recipes for you! My favorite recipe site is, www.epicurious.com. They have every recipe from every publication ever printed. Just search and have fun. I recommend searching gourmet deviled egg recipes! My other favorite place to search for recipes is, www.pinterest. com. I love using the search bar to find unique, delicious and healthy alternative recipes.

• I always make it a point to dress my clients for their parties. The new look of the home or the theme of the evening should be extended to the hosts as well. No matter how casual your backyard pool party might be there is always room for style! Here’s a little hint… my hosts never wear flip-flops! • Summer entertaining can be as detailed as any other time of the year, the trick is not to overdo or underwhelm your guests. I keep the floral simple and at a minimum. Choose a single summer bloom and repeat it throughout the party décor. Daises, potted geraniums, Gerbera daisies are all great choices. • Music and lighting are paramount in design and party planning. If you are planning live music, make space for it where the sound will not overwhelm conversation. I like to place my musicians outside on the patio and then open doors and windows to let the sound waft indoors. If the party is outdoors I place them further out on the lawn or the opposite side of the pool to keep the volume manageable. Lighting should be soft and not glaring, in other words, all lighting should be on a dimmer for your party and for your life.

THROW A SIZZLING SUMMER COCKTAIL PARTY Raise your glasses high - cocktail parties are the toast of this summer’s entertaining. Don’t know where to start? Think barware, which is nearly as hot as the rising temperatures. That’s why we turned to designer Julie Robbins from Replacements, Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of vintage and current dinnerware, for fabulously fun ideas sure to make your soiree one of your favorite summer memories. WHY ARE COCKTAIL PARTIES SO POPULAR FOR SUMMER 2017? These gatherings are both fun and easy to put together - you’re not trying to seat everyone at the same table so you can make use of more of your home, whether that’s an apartment, condo or house. Cocktail parties are all about conversation, networking and introducing one group of friends to another, so people are always moving around. This type of entertaining is perfect for both small and large spaces alike; you can use your kitchen, family room or head outside to a patio, deck or even your yard. WHAT’S THE BEST TIME FOR THE PERFECT COCKTAIL PARTY? Any time! Cocktail parties are usually the warm-up or winddown for the evening, and timing often depends on your reasons for celebrating. For instance, if you’re holding your party as a kickoff to some event, say an evening out or concert under the stars, you may want to serve drier drinks and savory, spicier foods. If it’s a post-event gathering, consider a late night with sweets, such as liqueurs and dessert-type finger foods. WHAT ABOUT BARWARE? WHAT’S HOT THIS SUMMER? I think three barware types will be extremely popular this season: the coupe, the old fashioned and a tall drink glass, such as a tumbler or highball. WHY THE COUPE? There’s a movement toward more elegant cocktails, and people want to serve those beverages in something equally elegant. That’s why coupes (often referred to as champagne-sherbet glasses) are really stepping into the fore. Coupes offer a more refined shape that looks great in the hand. Vintage coupes from classic American glassmakers such as Tiffin, Fostoria and Heisey are big with our

10 THESTANDARDPS.COM

customers, with unique pieces in pretty much every price range. Not only are vintage coupes a great conversation starter, these glasses are highly collectible. You can also use them for desserts.

THE OLD FASHIONED? Old fashioned or even double old fashioned glasses are used for serving spirits straight up or on the rocks. They’re also great for mixed cocktails, such as old fashioneds (the glass is named after this whiskey-based drink, which muddies bitters and sugars with a citrus twist), whiskey sours or even Bloody Marys. What’s neat is that you’ll find them in varying shapes. For example, Waterford has great old fashioned patterns, from something very simple and squared like their “Vintage” collection to more elegant, cut patterns such as “Powerscourt,” which is sparkly and almost tulip shaped. You’ll also find very rounded, roly-poly shapes made popular on the television show Mad Men. HOW ABOUT THE HIGHBALL? Highballs are perfect for serving taller, refreshing drinks such as Long Island iced teas or a Tom Collins. You may see highball glasses referred to as tumblers in vintage patterns. Most of the Depression glass patterns have unique shapes such as footed tumblers, which can really step up your game. BAR CARTS SEEM TO BE EVERYWHERE. IS THAT ANOTHER TREND FOR SUMMER ENTERTAINING? Bar carts are great! We’re coming out of a phase where people kept their liquor put away; these days they want to show it off. A well-stocked bar cart is the perfect accessory for any size living space. And many companies even seem to want a beautiful, shiny

and organized bar cart for the office. Bar carts are a great way to help keep your entertaining organized and not all spread out. And you can set those up for any style or taste. For example, you might want to put your alcohol on one shelf and your barware on another, or you can mix it up. Plus you can move your cart around as needed, so you’re not stuck in the same place with your guests glued to a bar. HOW ABOUT FOOD? Pre-portioned foods are fantastic for cocktail parties and a great way to serve something pricier without having to break the bank. One fun idea - think about using barware you may not need at that particular party, such as glass punch cups, to make individual shrimp cocktail servings. This saves you from having a huge bowl of shrimp where that one person (you know the one) will stand and eat all night and keeps your guests moving - they can grab a serving and go. Two- and three-tiered servers are fabulous for cocktail parties. These servers have a very small footprint since they’re stacked, meaning you can tier different hors d’oeuvres on each layer and serve your guests without taking up a huge chunk of your table. ANY FINAL TIPS? Limit your party to one or two signature cocktails. This keeps you from having to stock ten kinds of liquor and you can mix drinks in batches, meaning you can spend more time enjoying your party rather than bartending.

SUMMER IN THE DESERT! BY JIM MURPHY

It’s easier than you think to stay cool in Palm Springs in the summer – even though you are in one of the hottest regions in the USA. While many European tourists like to drive into the hot desert in the middle of the day to experience the oven-like heat, there are much better ways to spend your time. Save that drive for the evening (or the winter months!) and do what smart locals do to enjoy the season. Embrace the summer dawn. Even if you are usually a late riser, it’s incredibly clever to shift as if you are in another time zone and get up early. Peak heat is from 12 noon to 6:00 pm, so take a swim and then have breakfast at the pool as your new daily ritual. Morning is when the early sun is gentle, the mountains are colorful, and birds are out singing. So now that you have changed your routine to take advantage of the cooler part of the day, think of other things that you can do to avoid the heat. For example, how about taking a bicycle tour around town? Palm Springs is a great destination for your adventure. Year round pleasant temps, beautiful sights, and exciting camaraderie are the perfect ingredients for a memory-filled bicycle adventure. Palm Springs is amazingly bike friendly with loads of biking lanes and great equipment vendors. As you plan your tour, consider these easy planning options. If you’re looking for a guided bicycle tour through scenic Palm

18 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Springs, popular companies such as Big Wheel Tours are the perfect option for an all-inclusive biking experience. This touring vendor offers several amazing scenic tours such as the Earthquake Canyon Express Tour, guiding guests through the beautiful Mojave Desert and the Coachella Valley. Just a suggestion! If the thought of riding a bike brings back bad childhood memories of exhaustion or falling off your bike, how about you take the trails less traveled and discover the hidden natural beauty of Palm Springs in a way that can only be described as exhilarating and breathtaking - take a guided tour by horseback. See canyons, waterways, flora and fauna as well as ancient tribal lands at a leisurely pace while your guide leads you safely along well-established trails. Don’t worry about being a skilled rider - all stables are highly safetyconscious and offer rides for everyone, whether it’s your first time on a horse or you’re an experienced rider. And you can choose from different types of trails and varied lengths of your ride, all led by experienced guides. Here are just a few of the stables in the Palm Springs area: Smoke Tree Stables is a family-owned and operated business since 1927, and is located near Smoke Tree Mountain in southern Palm Springs. With over 150 miles of trails just outside their property, your guide will

lead you through historic Agua Caliente Indian Canyons and along trails where you’ll see everything from native palms to desert oases. Rides are offered by the hour or for the entire day, or you can book a private ride and go deep into the canyon. How about a moonlight ride under the stars? You get the idea! How about this? Want to get away from the desert floor to a completely new dimension where the air is cool and the views spectacular? The giant Palm Springs Aerial Tramway whisks you soaring up, up, and away to the high wilderness where it’s cool enough to hike, stroll in Mt. San Jacinto State Park or just hang out. You may even see a Big Horned Sheep up there! This is also a GREAT place to take children of all ages to explore the mountain forest and thrill at the tram ride as the tramcar just clears the mountain peaks on the ride up and back. OK! So an alternative to being out of doors is to go indoors for recreational shopping or to enjoy the ever-cool local Palm Springs Art Museum in three locations – the inside museum is a consistently cool 74 degrees. Also, The Desert Film Society has screenings throughout the summer, or slip into a summer blockbuster matinée at a local theater. Or if you are feeling a little lucky and want to have some thrills, you’ll find several top-quality and well-chilled casinos in the area – there are also restaurants and bars inside the casinos as well.

Oh! And your attire for all of these activities (because how you look is everything, right?) lightweight, loose and flowing, natural and summer-fashionable. After the sun goes down, choices are easier. Every dining option you could wish for, elegant cocktail bars, energized clubs. But it’s still warm out. If you have nightlife plans that include dressing up, don’t walk out to wait for your air-conditioned ride or limo until it pulls up! However, this is California, so attractive casual attire is always appreciated. Smart visitors stay cool by staying comfortable in the amazing Palm Springs area. Of course sometimes you just want to escape the rat race of life and just STOP and CHILL-OUT! So why not relax, lounge, read, or listen to great music – rest in the shade at your luxurious ModMansions vacation home. Your cool outfit here (?): sunscreen only and a bathing suit just in case the temperatures drop into the double digits – brrrrr! WHERE TO STAY? ASBURY PARK RISES UP FOR ASCENSION PARTY BY MARK DAWSON

Thousands of gay men from around the globe will flock to the sun drenched Jersey Shore in August for the three-day, eleven-party, fourteen-DJ festival known as Ascension Party. “Prepare to be turned ovah like a fat rat,” says DJ Lina, who launches the weekend on Friday, August 4, spinning the VIP cocktail party. “The wonderful part about Ascension is each DJ brings their own unique style so everyone gets what they need.” “We are thrilled to bring Ascension back to the states this year,” says Ascension Party founder Eric von Kuersteiner. The festival launched in 2006 on Fire Island Pines, where it continued annually until 2014. For the last two summers Ascension has taken place in Mykonos. “We brought on a new partner for the weekend who brought a lot of fresh ideas including the idea to take the party to the beautiful beaches on the Jersey Shore,” he explains. The transformation of Asbury Park has been incredible. Major investments in the boardwalk area and the city over the past few years have completely transformed the downtown. The host hotel for

Ascension, The Asbury, opened last summer after a 50 million dollar renovation. It was voted Best New Hotel in the U.S. in 2016. “Ascension is going to bring thousands of visitors from all over the tri-state area as well as the world to Asbury,” continues von Kuersteiner. “It will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the local businesses to thousands of new visitors.” Ascension Party is a charity event, donating 100% of net proceeds to the LGBTQ community. Over one million dollars has been donated to over 40 different organizations to date. The LGBTQ community of Asbury Park will be the major benefactor for Ascension 2017. “2017 is a new chapter for Ascension and we are pulling out all the stops,” promises von Kuersteiner. “Once again, we aim to give guests a fun-in-the-sun experience they will always remember.” Ascension Party takes place Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6 at Asbury Park. Discount rate tickets will go on sale on March 1. The host hotel is The Asbury Hotel (210 5th Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ). Visit ascensionparty.com for ticket information.

HERE IS WHAT A FEW OF THE DJS AT ASCENSION HAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS EPIC EVENT HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE AND SOUND? DJ PAULO Saturday Night Celebration My style is mostly Tribal/Progressive layered with big vocals. DANI TORO Saturday’s Ascension Beach Party main event. My style depends on the crowd. I never get to the DJ booth with a play list of tracks, as I don’t know what the mood of the crowd is going to be. I start with a couple of tracks and I wait for the reaction and that decides my DJ set. Sometimes crowds want more vocals, sometimes more circuit. EDDIE MARTINEZ Friday night’s Underwear Party. My style is sexy and fun with lots of energy. My sets always include my original work, private mixes and edits, along with my own personal flare. DJ LINA Friday night’s VIP Cocktail Party. Soulful. JOE GAUTHREAUX Sunday’s Ascension Closing Party. My sound has always been big room. I like playing for a lot of people so that’s how I’ve tailored my music over the years. DAN SLATER Sunday’s Ascension Pool Party. My DJ style and sound is uplifting, upbeat and chunky. I love vocals, and the sounds of European and South American producers. DJ HANSEL Saturday’s Ascension Beach Party main event. My sets have a very distinct sound, ranging from tech-house to tribal to my signature circuit. I’m Latin and I like to see my crowd shake and move hard so I’ll often add a bit of beats (drums) that remind me of my Latin roots. STEVE SIDEWALK Sunday’s Ascension Pool Party. I’ve been a DJ for over 18 years now and I am pretty well known for my high-energy vocal dance sets.

DANI TORO: Right now, my favorite producers are Tony Moran, Paulo, Joe Gauthreaux, Tommy Love, Mauro Mozart, Tom Stephan, Thomas Solvert and, of course, myself. I’m getting amazing feedback with the remixes of my track “Lick Me Up” and also Katy Perry’s “Chained To The Rhythm”. But we’ll have to see in August which songs will be favorable amongst the crowd EDDIE MARTINEZ: I like to mix current popular tracks and give them my own stamp, such as my remixes of Britney Spears’s “Just Luv Me” or Rihanna’s “Sex With Me”. DJ LINA: The music I play is more underground deep house so anywhere from Monique Bingham to ReelSoul, to Studio Apt and Blaze. JOE GAUTHREAUX: The most important thing for me is to connect with the crowd. A lot of times that means playing something that I know everyone will love, like “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran. Or maybe it’s one of my own tracks, like “Show Me (What You Got)” that I did with DJ Grind. Its special because the crowd knows its my track, so they know they’re not listening to some jukebox, but someone who is playing music that came from them. DAN SLATER: I’m doing the pool party so I’ll play a mixture of commercial, classic and underground tracks like Brian Justin Crum’s “Show Me Love feat. Toy Armada & DJ Grind”, Katy Perry’s “Chained To The Rhythm” and Ultra Nate’s “Desire ‘2K17”. DJ HANSEL: There will be underground and tribal house beats, and maybe a dose of Britney mixed in. Steve Sidewalk: Expect to hear remixes and reworks of classics from Whitney, Madonna, Deborah Cox and artists like Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Beyonce. I love spinning feel good, summer anthems like a fierce house mix of “When Love Takes Over”. I also love to embrace underground into my sets as well Offer Nissam and Peter Rauhofer. And since it’s a pool party, expect to hear some classics like Barry Harris’ “Dive in the Pool”.

WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF BEATS YOU WILL LIKELY BE THROWING DOWN AT ASCENSION? DJ PAULO: I probably will be bringing out some of my PauloLite tracks for this event since it’s by the beach. I just finished a remix of Katy Perry’s “Chained to the Rhythm” that I’ll be playing.

THE AMAZON TRAIL

A TENTH ANNIVERSARY AT SEA BY LEE LYNCH

THE DAY WE MET—MY SWEETHEART, ME, LIBRARIAN MJ LOWE, AUTHOR KARIN KALLMAKER.

We had every intention of being homebodies this year. No travel at all, just a year to save our pennies and get grounded. It’s been delicious. After several months of staying in our little coastal home, my mind is sharper, my sleep schedule is approaching normal, and I’ve got a good start on my next book. Then, something just as wonderful happened. The publishers of Sapphire Books invited us to be part of “Literary Adventures at Sea,” a program they put together with Olivia Cruises, which is being sponsored by Curve Magazine. I admit that I cried when we were asked. Two of our best friends urged us to join them. My sweetheart and I never ever dreamed we could go on a cruise. This one is sailing the inland passage of Alaska. Alaska! Growing up my parents’ apartment in Queens, I never thought I’d travel farther than Manhattan.

28 THESTANDARDPS.COM

The Staten Island Ferry this ain’t. We’re celebrating our tenth anniversary in style—and with a cozy group of over 1,800 lesbians. As of a week ago, there were all of three cabins available. Even when I did go into Manhattan, the lesbian bars held no more than perhaps a hundred dykes? This is a floating women’s festival. This was the cruise that writer Cate Culpepper gave herself before she died, sans a boatload of lesbians. I expect to meet her spirit along the way, beaming at all the women, women, women! I have visions of serenity, of calmly sailing wide blue waters, of passing glaciers of profound clarity and immensity, and perhaps a glimpse of northern lights to take our breath away after a long, long day of sunshine spent with my beloved on this, our tenth perfect year together.

The months leading up to this voyage have kept my sweetheart as busy as I’ve ever seen her. In what she calls her demented excitement about our cruise, she has already looked at 700 online pictures of where we are going. She has mapped out every deck on the boat. She has examined seventy possible off-ship excursions and has chosen the five best that suit us both. She’s even inspired and written half of this column. All this in the evenings while I read my escapist books and try to ignore the impending departure from our home, which I find extremely difficult, and from our cat, whose diabetes worsens with stress, especially when we are away. Our cat Bolo considers “away” to be any time I’m not next to her writing a new book for my publisher, Bold Strokes Books, while she bats things off the side table. So concerned is she that we’ll disappear, that she follows me into the bathroom while I take a shower, eager to remind me that whenever I want to feed her is okay, as long as it’s now. Leaving her in the care of our truly devoted cat sitter for even one night is not readily forgiven upon our return. My sweetheart usually spends two or three hours packing on the day of travel, while I fret, eyes glued to my watch. This time, a month before we set sail, she is already half packed and has written out the cat sitter’s check. Still she pours over maps of every location, wallowing in joyful anticipation. She has created an hourly itinerary Excel spreadsheet for each of the eight days we will be away. All I have to do is play that age-old game, Follow-the-Femme, though I know there will be hours blocked out to accommodate my visions of a week communing with the natural world and Cate Culpepper. I’ve never lived with an overexcited little kid, but that seems to be who I fell for in June, 2007. She claims that I’ve recently given up hope of reading more than a chapter of any book without at least one peep from her that goes something like, “Can I just tell you this one thing about Sitka/ Ketchikan/Juneau/Victoria?” Or: our room, our view, boarding, disembarking, Suzanne Westenhoefer’s show, dancing, and where we’re going to have lunch on our drive home. Such a woman deserves a bank-breaking anniversary, even if she’s been working overtime so we can afford it. The bathroom is stuffed with her luggage. The futon is covered with my suitcase and essentials and the cat’s been sleeping on everything, in a vain plea for us not to leave her for a whole week. A week is forever to little Bolo, and forever is what my sweetheart and I have pledged to each other. It’s been an incredible ten years since we met. I could not have found a more unconditionally loving, funny, caring, understanding, helpful, lovely, intelligent, alluring, forgiving, patient, or fun wife if I’d been looking. Which I wasn’t. Silly me.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

IT’S ALL JUST FUN AND GAMES… ISN’T IT? BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE I frequently handle bankruptcy cases in my law practice. People have debts of all kinds that can get out of hand if they become ill, lose a job or lose a family breadwinner. And sometimes the reason that all the debts can’t be paid is because of a gambling habit, or more likely an addiction to gambling, which has taken over the financial, social and psychological life of the client. They have a serious gambling disorder. Gambling of one sort or another has probably been with us since our earliest days as human beings. It is entertaining and a fun kind of social interaction. It can be both relaxing and exciting. We might win something! But it also can be an unhealthy escape from personal problems, a competition for attention, or a pathological focus on winning at all costs. These latter reasons for gambling can often lead to serious social problems and sometimes financial ruin. As an attorney, I use my legal expertise to help my clients get their debts discharged in bankruptcy, so they have a fresh start on life and can try to get their lives back in balance. I am not a therapist or social worker – I can’t offer assistance in changing their behavior so that their gambling habit goes away. But there are organizations and professionals who can do this, and I refer them there when it is appropriate. Let’s take a look at gambling in California to see what’s going on in the industry, and then I will list a few resources for help, in case you, or someone you know, will benefit: Various types of gambling are legal in the state, and are regulated at the state level. It is interesting that the most popular forms of gambling were legalized by initiatives by the people to change the California constitution, rather than by legislative action. 18 years old is the minimum age for gambling in Indian casinos, but most set the age at 21, because that is the minimum age to drink the alcohol they serve there. 18 is also the minimum age for playing the lottery or betting on horse racing. For all other forms of gambling, the age is 21. In addition to casinos (limited to Indian lands - the only locations where slot machines are allowed), the lottery, and pari-mutuel horse

30 THESTANDARDPS.COM

wagering (where players’ bets are pooled and not played against the “house”), California permits card clubs (where players bet against one another instead of against the “house”), and charitable gambling (bingo only, where the proceeds go to a charity). Currently, there are 62 legal casinos, with something like $8 Billion in annual economic output in California; 89 separate legal card rooms, and 21,000 locations to play the lottery across the state. Not usually classed as part of the gambling industry, I really must add the stock market to the list of easily accessible opportunities to risk money. A number of my bankruptcy clients have met their match playing against Wall Street. What kinds of gambling are illegal in California? Everything not listed above. Sports betting is illegal – actually, it is legal to make a bet, but not legal to take a bet or operate as a bookie. This means no office football pools or March Madness betting. Various games that are common in the casinos of Nevada and New Jersey can’t be played here. Faro, Monte, Roulette, Twenty-one, or any banking or percentage games played with cards or dice are illegal (except in some Indian casinos).

Across the country, gambling losses are around $150 billion per year. There is no current estimate of losses in California, but it appears that many other states have a higher rate of loss and gambling problems per capita than we do. Even so, it is estimated that up to 2% of our population has a serious gambling disorder.

NEED FOOD?

The causes of problem gambling may be primarily biological and can include chemical deficiencies; and also be psychological, controlling the patterns of thought of the gambler. The various reasons for the condition are similar to those of other addictions, such as drugs or alcohol. The existence of legalized gambling in an area doesn’t necessarily mean that it will trigger the compulsion in a person. It is likely that he or she will be drawn to whatever forms of gambling there are, legal or illegal, wherever they are. It is often very difficult to get people to recognize that they may have a gambling problem. It is necessary to learn about the possibilities for treatment, be supportive, not enable them by paying off their gambling debts, and help them understand the effect their behavior has on themselves and those around them. Here are some excellent resources for help: • Psychotherapy is the most effective treatment. Since most people who have a gambling addiction also have one or more other mental health problems, a trained professional can help modify gambling behavior and treat other disorders at the same time. • Gamblers Anonymous is available to anyone with a desire to stop gambling. There are groups in many locations in California. There is a 12-step program to help gamblers avoid a relapse once they are recovering. www.gamblersanonymous.org/ga/ • National Problem Gambling Helpline Network offers information on local resources available to those with gambling problems. 800-522-4700

FITNESS

AN ORIGINAL FORM OF ART BY JILL LANGHAM As this month’s issue focuses on Arts and Entertainment, I found myself wondering if bodybuilding and fitness were in any way related. So, I began to research the topic. I came to appreciate that although today’s Bodybuilders might not be considered as a traditional form of Art, it appears that the process of strengthening and developing one’s physique is one of the original forms of art. Thinking back to the days of the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman soldiers we can see that the human form was most typically represented by men who, out of necessity, were beautiful specimens of their time. These men, when not fighting a war, lifted huge rocks on a daily basis, building castles, homes and shelters for themselves or their communities. We see their chiseled muscles on canvases and frescos in churches, basilicas or museums. Not to mention the amazing statues carved in stone or marble during those times, with David being one of the most famous! The epic saga, Ben Hur, a great classic movie of the late 1950’s featured actors who portrayed and represented the titans of the first century. It is of course Hollywood’s representation of these titans based perhaps on the art of the time. The actors were rugged and muscular and certainly entertained us in the movie. And obviously over time we came to see Mr. Universe, Arnold Schwarzenegger, a larger than life man of muscle, rule the screen. He became an icon and role model for millions around the world and is unbelievably still going strong today! Then there was Bruce Lee, Jean Claude Van Damme, and the Rock, amongst many others. But it may have been Johnny Weissmuller, who played Tarzan that got our attention first and many people still consider him to be the best example of a well-balanced, modern hero! And don’t forget, Superman, Steve Reeves! But, interestingly, it was in India in the 11th century that actual weight lifting was first seen. By the 16th century it was considered a national pastime for the Indians! Who knew? At that time they used stones as their weights. It wasn’t so much that men wanted to exhibit their muscles as art as much as to show their strength. And by the late 1890’s the term “Strongman” was born. Men would compete with one another to see who was strongest. The men participated in cart pulling and animal lifting. So muscles

32 THESTANDARDPS.COM

and entertainment had a relationship even back then. Men began making money on their abilities and around 1893 at the Chicago’s World Fair, one team of strong men were making between upwards of $3000 a week, huge money today, let alone then! Many of these strong men were not exactly the “fit” bodies that we think of today. Instead they carried a lot of fat on their bodies and were rather stocky, much like today’s power lifters. In the late 90’s, bodybuilding took a turn that followed the Super Hero trend and the so-called “Men of Steel” began weighing upwards of 300+ pounds. Prior to this a competitor weighing 225 pounds was considered large. Rather than carrying extra fat like the “Strongmen” of the 1890’s these guys were all muscle. It was the era of the “Freak” and the “Freakier” the better! These Hunks or Hulks were rewarded with big money, big cars, like the Hummer and their routines, which used to be based on beautiful aesthetics turned cartoonish at best. This lasted about 15 years and it’s only in the last few years that bodybuilding judges began again rewarding great, symmetric physiques. It will be interesting to see where the trends take us in a few more years. Wrestling and wrestlers hit the scene in the early 1950’s but never became much of anything until the “entertaining” Hulk Hogan came onto the scene and turned wrestling into a billion dollar industry. What’s fascinating to me is that the famed WWF, with all of its “theatrical stuntmen and women” are paid millions in salaries. Whereas the purse for the winner of the Olympia, a yearly competition for pro-bodybuilders may only top $200,000$250,000, at best. But, you do get what you pay for and the WWF has learned how to put on a very entertaining show. However, this is not the case in bodybuilding! If you’ve ever been to a bodybuilding show, you know it’s pretty darn boring. And as a former competitor I feel qualified to tell it like it is! XOXO Got questions or need help? WELLNESS I

JUICING FOR WEIGHT LOSS? BY ADAM SINICKI

Juice diets are currently all the rage for losing weight and have a number of high profile proponents who promote their magical qualities. The idea is simple: survive on nothing but juice for a while and in theory you can survive on a super low number of calories and see the weight really fall off. Some claim you can lose 7lbs in a week or more! But are juice diets really a good idea? Or are they just a lot of hype? THE TRUTH ABOUT JUICE DIETS Juice is very good for you. Other than having a high sugar content, it is rich in vitamins and minerals and is a great way to get more of both in your diet. But what juice is not is a suitable replacement for your meals. Surviving on juice alone not only means that you are only taking in a very low number of calories but also lacks all kinds of nutrients and elements that we need in our diet. For instance, juice is very low in amino acids. Amino acids are found in proteins and are what our body uses to repair muscle and tissue – and even to create our neurotransmitters. Likewise, while juices are high in vitamins and minerals, no juice contains all of these in high enough quantities so you’re still likely to be deficient in all manner of things – whether it’s calcium or zinc. And what is high in juice is sugar. That means you’re going to be damaging your teeth and potentially causing inflammation while at the same time causing sugar spikes and hunger pangs. There’s no sustenance there and no slow-release energy to keep you going through the day. Of course when you live on just a few glasses of juice, you are going to see rapid weight loss because you’re consuming barely

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

any calories. This does not mean it’s a healthy way to lose weight however. For starters, you’ll be hungry, grump and lethargic the entire time. What’s more, your skin, hair, teeth and nails will suffer. Finally, when you eventually go back to a normal diet, you’ll pile back on the pounds as quickly as you lost them. Juice diets are unsustainable, they are very high in sugar and they are tantamount to starving yourself as far as your body is concerned. You also lose weight when you’re very ill – that doesn’t mean you should consider it as a viable weight loss plan! USING JUICE IN A HEALTHY WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT All that said, it’s still possible to use juice in a healthy way to lose weight. The best way to do this is simply to add juice to your diet in the mornings. A smoothie might well be high in sugar content but if you only drink one, you’re still only adding 100-150 calories to your diet. At the same time though, you’ll be getting a plethora of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins that have a vast number of potent health benefits from improving your muscle strength, to helping you sleep better to increasing your energy efficiency. If you add some juice to your diet, you’ll be able to work out and stay active more effectively because you’ll feel run down and ill less often. Likewise, you’ll have fewer cravings because you’ll be less likely to have deficiencies. Juice can make you feel great in small quantities and this is a great boost to your weight loss efforts. But that doesn’t mean you should consume only juice. Be smart and eat a balanced diet – there are no shortcuts when it comes to health!

WELLNESS II

EAT THIS, INSTEAD OF THAT BY DAWN JACKSON, RDN

Does it ever seem like a lot of healthy-eating advice is about “less,” “giving up” and “taking away?” Reducing fat and sodium intake, avoiding high-calorie foods and trimming portion size are commonly heard pieces of advice when you’re trying to lose weight or improve your diet. But health experts agree, good eating doesn’t just mean giving up bad habits, it’s also about adding foods with more nutritional value. “Instead of focusing on what you shouldn’t eat, focus on making nutrition-packed swaps. A few easy swaps I tell my clients about include replacing white bread with whole grain, higher-fat protein sources with leaner ones, and upgrading your ordinary products like eggs or cereal with higher-nutrition varieties.” Here are five better-for-you food swaps that will jam pack your diet with enhanced nutrition without making you feel like you’re giving anything up: INSTEAD OF MAYO Try an avocado-based spread on your sandwiches and as a base for homemade dressings. A single tablespoon of mayonnaise has 90 calories, 10 grams of fat, 5 milligrams of cholesterol and 90 milligrams of sodium, but zero potassium or fiber, according to the California Avocado Commission. In comparison, 2 tablespoons of fresh avocado have just 50 calories, 4.5 grams of (mostly good) fat, no cholesterol or sodium, and 150 milligrams of potassium and 2 grams of fiber. INSTEAD OF ANY OLD EGG Try eggs with superior nutritional benefits. While all eggs are high in protein, Eggland’s Best eggs contain double the omega3s and three times more vitamin B12 than ordinary eggs - both nutrients associated with heart health. Plus, they contain 25 percent less saturated fat, five times more vitamin D, and 10 times more vitamin E than ordinary eggs. INSTEAD OF WHITE RICE While carbohydrates are necessary to fuel your brain and muscles, many favorite sources are stripped of nutrition, such as white rice. Cauliflower can be an easy substitute for rice. This white

veggie packs plenty of fiber, protein, potassium and vitamin C. To replace rice, simply pulse the cauliflower in a food processor for a few seconds until you achieve the desired consistency. INSTEAD OF FRIED FOOD The crunch of fried food is alluring, but you can get that same crunch in a much healthier superfood way. Instead of coating chicken or fish with breading and plunging it into a bath of hot oil, use chopped nuts. Nuts contain healthy fat, protein, and fiber and when baked in a hot oven (about 400-425 degrees F), nut-coated protein is crunchy and delicious. Try nut-covered chicken fingers today! INSTEAD OF GROUND BEEF Americans love beef and eat about 25 billion pounds of it every year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But depending on the quality and cut you buy, beef can be high in fat and cholesterol. Lentils can be a high-nutrition protein source that can go virtually anywhere you use ground beef, including burgers, meatloaf and taco filling. Naturally low in calories and fat free, lentils provide fiber, protein and potassium. Food swaps focused on increasing healthful nutrients, rather than decreasing what you don’t want, can be rewarding and delicious.

IS SEAWEED THE NEXT SUPERFOOD? BY MALCOLM KRAUSE There’s a new superfood in town. And it’s not kale. Seaweed may be a hot new food trend in the United States, but this leafy green from the sea has been used in Asian cuisine for thousands of years. Not only is seaweed low in calories and fat, it’s also packed with essential nutrients like vitamins A, B and C. Better yet? Research shows it’s a good source of antioxidants and calcium and can prevent and reduce inflammation. You may know seaweed as a crunchy, salty snack or the wrap that holds together sushi rolls. What you may not know is that seaweed is an important food ingredient that improves the taste of foods, makes them better for us and benefits the environment. For example, carrageenan, an ingredient naturally derived from red seaweed, makes our ice cream creamy, keeps chocolate milk from separating and is the reason the ground nuts in our nut milk don’t settle to the bottom of the carton. It can also be used instead of sodium in deli meats and to replace fats and sugar in other foods. Some sweets, like puddings and gummy candies, get their unique texture from gelatin, an animal-based ingredient. But what about those who follow a vegetarian or kosher diet? Have no fear seaweed is here! Plant-based carrageenan can be used in place of gelatin to make sure these tasty snacks are vegetarian, vegan, halal and kosher. Another way seaweed improves the foods we eat every day? Alginates, also a seaweed-based ingredient, are added to baked goods, such as bread, and even your favorite energy bars to make them taste better and stay fresh for longer. Alginates are also used to make beer foamy and replace the fat in low-fat ice cream. But seaweed doesn’t just benefit the foods we eat; it’s also good for the environment and the people who farm it. Seaweed is one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly crops on the planet. It requires none of the fertilizers, pesticides or other chemicals that are used in land-based farming. And seaweed sequesters carbon and cleans ocean water of phosphorus and

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

nitrogen. Some scientists and researchers believe seaweed might even be the biofuel of the future. More than 75,000 farmers around the world rely on seaweed farming to support their families. Before they started farming carrageenan seaweed, many coastal communities lived at or below the poverty level. With the income they earn harvesting carrageenan seaweed, these farmers are able to improve their homes, enhance their diets and send their children to school. And in some countries, seaweed harvesting provides a way out of poverty for women who do not have access to other jobs. Seaweed isn’t just a healthy snack or ingredient that makes our favorite foods better tasting and better for us. It’s revolutionizing dinner plates and economies around the world, restoring our oceans and improving lives. SEASON UP THAT GRILL BY ANDREW J. SMYTHE Flowers are blooming, days are getting longer and temperatures are warmer - you can probably recognize all the signs that grilling season has arrived! But do you know how to best season all the fresh foods you’ll grill this summer? Sure, a dash of salt and pepper may be all you need for some premium cuts of meat, but creative seasoning with organic spices and herbs can enhance the taste of virtually everything you grill. What’s more, the clean simplicity of organic seasonings perfectly complements the natural healthfulness of grilling. The organic seasoning experts at Frontier Co-op offer some tips for using seasonings to achieve greater grilling this summer. Dry or wet? That’s the rub Two of the most common ways to add seasonings to grilled food is through the use of a rub or marinade. What’s the difference between the two? It’s not just that one is dry and the other wet, because some rubs are wet, too. Generally, rubs are mixtures of dry spices that you rub on food to add flavor before cooking. They’re good for high-fat foods like meat, and often contain salt and sugar, which also promotes the formation of a crust on the food when you grill it. Usually, after applying a rub you’ll want to let the food sit an hour or two before grilling it.

PAIRING SEASONINGS WITH FOOD Some food/seasoning pairings are obvious, like apples and cinnamon or fish and lemon pepper. However, a wide range of seasonings can elevate the flavor of a variety of foods. Here are a few creative pairings to try this summer grilling season.

CARDAMOM - Pork, apples, pears, citrus fruits, cabbage and carrots Marinades are typically liquid seasoned with spices to add flavor to food and sometimes tenderize it. You place the food in the liquid and allow it to sit for a set period of time - a few hours to overnight. When you’re ready to cook, remove the food from the marinade and use a brush or rubber spatula to remove excess marinade before placing the food on the grill. Marinades are great for vegetables and meat, poultry or fish that tend to be dry.

CLOVES - Beef, pork, sweet potatoes, onions, apples, pears, citrus fruits and peaches CUMIN - Hamburgers, pork, chicken (marinades), tofu, tempeh and cabbage GINGER - Steak, chicken, fish, seafood and fruits

Of course, seasonings can add flavor to food in multiple ways. For example, if you’re soaking vegetables or fruit before grilling, you can add herbs and spices to the soaking water. In addition to absorbing liquid, the food will also soak up the great flavor of the seasonings. Some foods benefit from basting during the grilling process. You can enhance the flavor of the food by adding seasonings to the butter or liquid you use for basting. If you use foil packets to steam fish, veggies or fruit on the grill, you can add seasonings directly atop the food before folding the foil, or add them to a bit of liquid at the base of the packet.

MARJORAM - Burgers, chicken, fish, lamp, poultry and vegetables POPPY SEED - Potatoes, cabbage, carrots, onions and zucchini SAFFRON - Chicken and fish TURMERIC - Lamb, beans and zucchini For more grilling seasoning ideas and recipes, visit www.frontiercoop.com.

Embracing a variety of electronic influences ranging from James Blake to Alina Baraz, she expresses a different side of herself, illuminating dance floor-ready soundscapes with her seismic and stunning delivery. Kirstin started honing the voice millions know and love as a child in Arlington, TX. At 7-yearsold, she went from singing Disney classics in front of the TV to flawlessly belting out a Shania Twain anthem during her mom’s wedding. Growing up, she devoted every minute to singing, remaining active in musical theater through college. On a whim, she and some friends auditioned for NBC’s The Sing-Off in 2011, and Pentatonix was born. Since then, the group has won three GRAMMY® Awards, received a Daytime Emmy® nomination, had seven albums reach top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart, sold out shows across the globe and starred in their own network Christmas Special. Their RIAA certified gold self-titled album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart while That’s Christmas To Me has been certified double platinum and A Pentatonix Christmas certified platinum.

SOCIAL COMMENTARY

THIS IS ONE LIFE TO LIVE, NO DRESS REHEARSAL. BY DR. STEPHAN M. SCOGGINS

I have some news that I wanted to share with everyone. I heard, (wait for it - wait for it) that it is going to be very hot in Palm Springs. Okay, now that you know I am the bearer of accurate information, I’d like to share some phenomenal news. (Smile) Did you know that you can have the desires of your heart? That’s right! I’m going to give you the first step to experiencing unspeakable joy. The first step is that you have to identify the ONE thing that you consider is the biggest obstacle in your life? Usually, when I ask that question at open seminars people always respond with, “There are several obstacles in my life.” Well, that’s the point. You were asked to name ONE. This is where it becomes difficult. This is when absolute HONESTY is required, and I mean being honest with yourself. Are you a procrastinator? Do you have non-productive friends? Do you lack focus? Are you poor with time management? Do you isolate yourself? Is your self-esteem and self-worth so low that you have started digging? Are your children your “go to” excuse for why you don’t participate in adult activities? Are your finances challenged? Is your physical body composition not where you would like for it to be? Some of you may have answered YES to all of these questions. Now, back to the initial question, “Identify ONE thing that you consider is the biggest obstacle in your life?” Let me answer the question for you. The answer is.... YOU! In all of the aforementioned

40 THESTANDARDPS.COM

questions YOU are the constant. For the next few moments let’s allow ourselves to be honest and not blame ANYONE for OUR lives. When going to a public venue, be it a local pub or restaurant, even without trying we are forced to hear what I refer to as, “public conversations”. People speak openly in public places about the most private of topics. From abusive relationships to financial woes involving evictions, car repossessions and legal predicaments, nothing is left off the table for our dining pleasure. (Smile) In each of the cases, I have NEVER heard anyone say, “MY CHOICES” are having some very unhealthy consequences. Is it really that difficult to accept personal accountability and responsibility? My purpose for bringing this topic up is in an effort to “comfort those who are afflicted and afflict those who are comfortable.” Pause to do some soul searching to ask yourself, “What are the topics of the majority of my conversations? Have you noticed that people have stopped calling you? Have you noticed that people “warn” you of what topics to NOT bring up? If you answered yes, let me give you some constructive criticism. Your friends are absolutely sick of hearing that bullshit. Talking about things that you are not willing or not able to do anything about is not going to help you or them. Here’s a thought. What about allowing your friends to be a fantastic escape? Treat you and them to other topics of conversations so that

the fellowship you share can be genuinely enjoyed and appreciated. You may even be able to create a savings program. Each time you bring up a negative topic, place a dollar in your left pocket, later to be transferred to your stash at home. Hopefully, you will run out of negative topics before you run out of money. (Smile) Once you honestly identify the MAIN obstacle in your life, changes can occur. Here are some of the most common MAIN obstacles: Living outside in instead of inside out; constant LIES, which most people recognize as delusions of grandeur; Not having a realistic plan; Fear associated with an unsafe environment, such as domestic violence; Drug and alcohol addictions; Clinical depression; Passive-aggressive manipulation; Isolation and many more. Now, each of the obstacles mentioned above are huge by themselves, imagine when some of us are trying to juggle several of them? My suggestion is that we remember the answer to that $64,000 question, “How do you eat an elephant?” One bite at a time. (Smile)

Personally, I find it helpful physically write things down. It is helpful to remove the emotions and view the objectivity of our choices. It wouldn’t hurt to create an old-fashioned “Pros and Cons” list and write down all of the positive (pros) and negative (cons) of our decisions. Now, here is the catch. Once you identify a con, you don’t then start justifying, “Well, the reason that person treats me so poorly is because they were an only child and their parents were alcoholics.” It is irrelevant as to WHY something is under the cons list, but rather THAT it is under the cons list. As a child, I learned a very valuable lesson. If you are playing tug-o-war and you want to win the game, the smartest thing you can do is, (wait for it - wait for it).... is to let go. NEVER pull in the opposite direction of things that are important to you. This is one life to LIVE, no dress rehearsal. Please accept this personal invitation to visit www.BlackIsTheColorOfLove.com and learn about educational and scholarship opportunities for people of all ages, people of all races. As a nation, we MUST change our culture, our learned behavior, so that it can reflect an expression of love in ways that we have only dreamed. Dr. Stephan Scoggins
