KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND HEADLINES THE 31ST ANNUAL STEVE CHASE HUMANITARIAN AWARDS COVER
The gala event will be presented by Desert Care Network at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Saturday, March 29, 2025. Tickets are now on sale, and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Beloved local caterer and philanthropist Lynn Hammond to receive the Partners for Life Award.
More than a thousand enthusiastic and generous supporters of DAP Health are expected at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Saturday, March 29, 2025, for The31st Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards (AKA The Chase) presented by Desert Care Network. Attendees are sure to get down that night when recently revealed headline entertainers, the legendary KC and The Sunshine Band, storm the stage.
Since their formation in 1973, the group — led by Harry Wayne “KC” Casey — has brought joy to audiences worldwide with their signature “Miami sound,” a fusion of Caribbean, R&B, and funk. With over 100 million albums sold, chart-topping hits like “That’s the Way (I Like It),” “Get Down Tonight,” and “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty,” and music featured in over 200 movies, TV shows, and ad campaigns, KC and The Sunshine Band have left an indelible mark on music and pop culture.
Their accolades include multiple Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, and stars on both the Hollywood and Palm Springs Walks of Fame. Known for their electrifying live performances, KC and The Sunshine Band continue to spread instant happiness across the globe.
“Over the last three decades plus, to say that DAP Health has been fortunate enough to have iconic acts grace our stage at The Chase is a major understatement,” says CEO David Brinkman. “To that illustrious, multi-platinum list we add the inimitable KC and The Sunshine Band for our 31st iteration in March. I can already foresee a standing, sold out crowd giving it up to shake, shake, shake and get down that night in their boogie shoes. Keep it coming, love, ’cause that’s the way I like it.” “I came up with the concept of doing more of a dance party,” adds DAP Health Co-Vice Chair and The Chase Event Chair Kevin Bass, who was instrumental in getting his friend Barry Manilow — a legendary musical powerhouse in his own right — to donate his performance at 2024’s The Chase. That night, $2.3 million was raised!
“I thought, ‘Let’s bring in a famous dance band whose music catalog everybody knows and loves, continues Bass. “Who better than KC and The Sunshine Band? They represent a time people really remember fondly. So, for 2025, we’re not asking people to just sit, or stand at the front of the stage. We want them to get up and dance
the night away! It’s going to be a fantastic set because everyone in that room will know each and every one of that inimitable act’s solid gold hits!” Before that disco dancing frenzy caps out the evening, there will be enough love and goodwill to warm the hearts of those in attendance for weeks thereafter.
OUR 2025 HONOREE
In recognition of her lifelong dedication to giving back — sharing her heart, soul, and talents to strengthen her beloved community — beloved local caterer and philanthropist Lynn Hammond will be honored with the 2025 Partners for Life Award.
“I can’t think of a more deserving recipient,” says Bass. “Lynn has been an integral part of our organization and its PFL annual giving program for many years. When she’s passionate about a cause, she’s passionate and dedicated with every fiber of her being.
And she has shown that time and time again for us. Whether it’s donating her time, money, or talent, she always gives 100% — and makes sure to bring her family and friends along with her. She’s a force, and we are very excited to honor her.”

DAP Health has partnered with College of the Desert’s Student Health and Wellness Services to bring high-quality sexual wellness services to students at the Student Health and Wellness Center, located in room 133 of the Cravens Student Services Building.
Services — each of which is provided at no charge, regardless of insurance — include:
To schedule an appointment, please call 760.656.8424
Walk-ins are also welcome.
“At College of the Desert, we know that access to health care is essential for student success, especially for those from underserved communities where medical services aren’t always easy to get,” says Interim Dean of Student Support Services Carlos Maldonado. “By partnering with DAP Health to offer free, stigma-free sexual wellness services on campus, we’re making sure students have the support they need to take care of their health without worrying about cost. For many of our students, this isn’t just about convenience — it’s about having access to care that can impact their ability to stay in school and thrive. We’re proud to bring these vital services to the Palm Desert campus every Monday because when students have what they need to be healthy, they have a better chance of reaching their goals.”
“I’m excited to increase access to STI testing and treatment, birth control — including free emergency contraception — and HIV prevention in the form of PEP and PrEP at COD,” adds DAP Health Physician Assistant Madeleine Newhouse, who will oversee the Monday pop-up clinic. “These services are so important to students, especially when delivered at no cost. I hope word about our presence on campus spreads far and wide so that DAP Health can have a positive impact on the sexual and reproductive well-being of these young adults.”
Each Monday, the clinic at COD will offer 12 half-hour appointments, for enrolled students only.
As always, anyone is welcome to access DAP Health’s free sexual wellness services at all three of its other locations: The Orange Clinic on its Sunrise campus at 1695 North Sunrise Way in Palm Springs, Stonewall Medical Center at 68-555 Ramon Road in Cathedral City, and its sexual wellness clinic in Indio at 81-719 Dr. Carreon Blvd., Suite D1.
THE BOTTOM LINE WHEN IT COMES TO COLORECTAL CANCER
BY DANIEL HIRSCH
March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. What we know is this: Early detection through routine screening saves lives. Given that colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, it’s a common disease that more people should be aware of — especially because it’s highly preventable thanks to regular, routine screenings.
Roughly 153,000 Americans a year receive this cancer diagnosis. In 2025, the American Cancer Society anticipates colorectal cancer will cause 52,900 deaths in the U.S. That number could be lower if more people were aware of the lifesaving effect of screenings.
CATCH IT EARLY
Colorectal cancers generally develop from small polyps that form in the inner lining of the colon. Polyps often begin as benign growths, but can turn cancerous over time. Catching them before they become malignant, therefore, is key to stopping serious illness and death.
“By identifying signs of colon cancer through screenings, early intervention can be performed to minimize spread,” says DAP Health’s Co-Director of Adult Medicine Dr. Frederick Afari. “If we find a polyp, and that’s the only tissue sample that has cancer cells, you don’t have to go through a big surgery. We just remove it then and there [during the colonoscopy]. You don’t have to have your colon taken out. Chemotherapy and all of that stuff doesn’t have to happen.”
Not only does catching colon cancer early eliminate the need for more serious surgery and the painful symptoms caused by further growth, but it also greatly improves survival rates. If colorectal cancer is found and removed at an early stage — while it’s still localized to the inner lining of the colon — the five-year survival rate is 91%, according to the American Cancer Society. That number drops down to 73% if the cancer spreads regionally.
GET SCREENED
Colorectal cancer screenings can involve blood tests, stool tests, or a colonoscopy. In this last case, while the patient is under light sedation, a flexible tube is inserted into the rectum to photograph the entire length of the colon.
“Some people have apprehension about doing colorectal cancer screenings — particularly colonoscopies — but the good news is we have a lot of different screening modalities we can use,” Afari explains. “We can do the less invasive fecal immunochemical test, or FIT test, to allow us to figure out whether there is a need to do something a little bit more invasive.”
Afari recommends patients discuss their risk factors with their primary care team to see what option is right for them, but also advises that sometimes, the discomfort of a colonoscopy — which involves fasting and using laxatives to empty out the bowels — is often worth it.
“Colonoscopy usually stands out as the gold standard because there’s actual visualization of the colon,” he says. “The FIT test just gives us a hint of something disrupting the body. If you’re able to tolerate a colonoscopy, and then your doctor sees nothing wrong, follow-up is not for another 10 years.”
UNDERSTAND RISK
Genetics and family history play a big role in determining a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer, but the biggest factor is something much more universal: age. “As ones gets older, colorectal tissue starts changing and shifting, so that’s why we recommend people get their first screening when they turn 50,” says Afari.
That being said, young people are not immune, with rates of colorectal cancer having been on the rise in people under 50 — especially in those who have a parent, sibling, or child with a history of the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, one in five people who have colorectal cancer is under 55.
CHANGE HABITS
Behaviors like smoking, alcohol use, lack of exercise, and eating lots of red meat and processed food can increase one’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Obesity and diabetes are also linked to higher incidence. So, lifestyle interventions like exercise and adopting a healthy diet can help decrease risk.
“Fiber intake is important, as it helps keep the colon healthy and intact,” Afari says. “If you smoke and you quit, it gives you an exponential benefit of reducing the chance of colon cancer down the road.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
Because of the lifesaving power of early screening, even the most health-conscious person is advised to keep colon health in mind when meeting with their health care providers.
“Getting screened is so important,” says Afari. “If you notice any changes in your body, come in, talk to your provider, and listen to their recommendations. That will help you avoid this very avoidable cancer from spreading throughout your body and causing something much more devastating.”

FEATURE BREAKTHROUGH DRUG OF THE YEAR IT COULD MEAN THE END OF THE HIV EPIDEMIC
BY NPR STAFF
CAN WE ELIMINATE THE HIV EPIDEMIC?
It’s a question that dates to the start of the epidemic in the 1980s. With 1.3 million new infections a year, the epidemic continues … and the world is not on track to meet the ambitious U.N. goal of ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.
But 2024 has fueled increasing optimism among leading infectious disease experts after the results of two groundbreaking clinical trial results for a drug called Lenacapavir showed it to be capable of virtually eliminating new HIV infections through sex.
The emerging data surrounding Lenacapavir is so astonishing that the drug’s development has been heralded as the 2024 Breakthrough of the Year by the journal Science, which described it as representing “a pivotal step toward diminishing HIV/AIDS as a global health crisis.”
AN ALTERNATIVE TO DAILY PILLS
Lenacapavir, which is administered via a twice-yearly injection, represents a dramatic new alternative to the current standard of care for
HIV prevention: taking a pill called Truvada every day. While this type of drug, called pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), has also been shown to be 99% effective in blocking HIV infections from sex in clinical trials, this is not necessarily the case in the real world.
People don’t always take their pills. In a study in South Africa, women said they felt there was a stigma to the pill -- a sexual partner might assume they’re taking it because they already have HIV or because they have other partners. Research has also highlighted significant barriers in taking daily oral PrEP among men who have sex with men, ranging from access to the drug, inconvenience, and perceptions that it is unnecessary. One study showed oral PrEP effectiveness to be as low as 26% in certain populations -- men under age 30, for example.
“The burden of taking daily medicine varies for each individual and may well be perceived as an even greater burden for healthy people who feel fine,” says Weld. “The finding that twice yearly injections have high efficacy in preventing HIV, lowers the amount that an individual has to do over the course of a lifetime to protect themselves. It puts Lenacapavir much closer to the domain of other preventive paradigms such as vaccination.”
A POTENTIAL ‘GAME-CHANGER’
Advocacy groups have also expressed great enthusiasm. “Lenacapavir would be “a real game-changer,” particularly for people facing stigma and discrimination in low- and middle-income countries,” read a statement by People’s Medicines Alliance -- a global coalition of more than 100 organizations that span 33 countries and that advocate for making medications more accessible.
NEXT STEPS
Lenacapavir is not a new drug. It’s been approved by the FDA in the United States for multi-drug-resistant HIV treatment since 2022. But PURPOSE 1 and PURPOSE 2 are the first clinical trials to test it for HIV prevention.
According to Gilead Sciences, the data from the two trials will now be used to support a series of global regulatory filings which will begin by the end of 2024, with the aim of launching Lenacapavir onto the market at some point in 2025.
Yet any eventual approval and widespread use would come with challenges. According to an analysis presented at the 24th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022), PrEP medications would need to cost less than $54 a year per patient for South Africans, for example, to be able
to afford them. Lenacapavir’s cost as HIV treatment in the United States in 2023 was $42,250 per new patient per year. Oral PrEP options, on the other hand, can cost less than $4 a month.
Given the drug’s potential, Tremblay says that it is critical for access to be as widespread as possible.
“The infrastructure needs to be in place to reach at-risk populations and make sure they can access it,” she says. “If everyone at risk could receive this prophylaxis, within a few years it could alter the course of the epidemic. When you substantially decrease the transmission rate, then the epidemic can wane down.”
Professor Linda-Gail Bekker, director of the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the University of Cape Town, wholeheartedly agrees. “While we’re waiting for the generic companies [to make generic forms of Lenacapavir], I feel that places where the Lenacapavir trials have been run should have access to this product either from the original company or hopefully in future, from generics companies. We can’t have a world where we don’t see this miracle getting into the hands of the people who contributed to this.”

BOOK REVIEW ALWAYS OVERBOOKED
BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
When it came to friends and family, your cup used to runneth over.
You had plenty of both and then, well, life and politics wedged an ocean-sized chasm between you, and it makes you sad. And yet – are you really all that far apart? As in the new memoir, “Cleavage” by Jennifer Finney Boylan, maybe you’re still two peas in a pod.
Once upon a time not so long ago, Jennifer Finney Boylan was one of “a group of twelve-year-old Visigoths” intent on mischief. They hung around, did normal boy stuff, setting off rockets, roughhousing, roaming, rambling, and bike-riding. The difference between Boylan and the other boys in her group was that Jim Boylan knew she was really a girl.
Then, she vowed that it was a “secret no soul would ever know,” and James went to college, enjoyed a higher metabolism, dated, fell in love too easily, then married a woman and fathered two boys but there was still that tug. Boylan carried the child she once was in her heart – “How I loved the boy I’d been!” – but she was a woman “on the inside” and saying it aloud eventually became critical.
Boylan had a hard talk with her wife, Deedie, knowing that it could be the end of their marriage. She’s eternally grateful now that it wasn’t.
She’s also grateful that she became a woman when she did, when politics had little to do with that personal decision. She worries about her children, one who is trans, both of whom are good, successful people who make Boylan proud. She tries to help other trans women. And she thinks about the words her mother often said: “Love will prevail.”
“Our lives are not a thing to be ashamed of,” Boylan says, “or apologized for, or explained. Our lives are a thing of wildness, and tenderness, and joy.”
Judge “Cleavage” by its cover, and you might think you’ll get a primer on anatomy. Nope, author Jennifer Finney Boylan only has one chapter on the subject, among many. Instead, she leans heavily on her childhood and her transition rather late in life, her family, and her friends to continue where her other books left off, to update, correct, and to share her thoughts on that invisible division. In sum, she guesses that “a huge chunk of the population… still doesn’t understand this trans business at all...”
Let that gentle playfulness be a harbinger of what you’ll read: some humor about her journey, and many things that might make your heart hurt; self-inspection that seems confidential and a few oh-
so-deliciously well-placed snarks; and memories that, well-told and satisfying, are both nostalgic and personal from “both the Before and the After.”
This book has the feel of having a cold one with a friend and Boylan fans will devour it. It’s also great for anyone who is transcurious or just wants to read an enjoyable collection of work from a born storyteller. No matter what you want from it, what you’ll find in “Cleavage” is a treasure chest.

FEATURE MIKE MAIMONE HONORS LATE HUSBAND WITH HEARTFELT SINGLE
BY PAUL HUTNICK
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Mike Maimone is set to release his deeply personal new single, “On My Way”, on March 7. The upbeat, feel-good track serves as the first single from his forthcoming EP, Guess What? I Love You, a poignant tribute to his late husband, renowned PR guru Howard Bragman. While the song’s infectious melody will surely have listeners tapping their feet, its origin story adds layers of heartfelt emotion and profound meaning.
“On My Way” was born during the early days of Maimone and Bragman’s long-distance romance. “We were always hopping planes to see each other,” Maimone recalls. “Just before one trip, I called him with a guitar in hand and sang this little ditty that was running through my head about how excited I was to see him. He didn’t pick up, so I left it as a voicemail. He told me it was fun and
catchy and encouraged me to turn it into a full song.”
That simple voicemail would later become a cornerstone of Maimone’s healing process after Bragman’s untimely passing. The couple married, but tragically, the day after their wedding, Bragman passed away in Maimone’s arms. Left grappling with immense grief, Maimone found solace in music, channeling his emotions into Guess What? I Love You, an EP that chronicles their love story and his path through loss and healing.
“Side A is about finding love, and Side B explores loss,” Maimone explains of the EP’s structure. “I knew this album would be difficult for anyone who has experienced the trauma of losing a loved one before their time. But I didn’t want to leave the listener in darkness—I wanted to find a way out.”
While working on the record, Maimone revisited old voicemails from Bragman, using them as emotional touchstones for the EP. One of those recordings was the original “On My Way” message. Though he initially planned to re-record the vocal as it was, the process organically evolved. He expanded the song, adding a second verse, a bridge, and layers of stomps, claps, and snaps to give it a more celebratory feel. “It felt like Howard was nudging me to keep going,” Maimone shares. Energized by this connection, he flew his band back to Nashville to complete the track with a full-band arrangement, transforming the once-simple ditty into a dynamic anthem of love and remembrance.
Maimone’s career has been defined by his storytelling prowess and his ability to turn raw emotion into captivating music. Hailing from Ohio—where he once played high school basketball against LeBron James—Maimone initially followed a traditional path, earning a business degree and working as an accountant. However, his passion for music eventually led him to trade spreadsheets for songwriting. His distinct blend of raspy vocals, emotive piano, and gritty storytelling has drawn comparisons to legends like Randy Newman, Leon Russell, Tom Waits, and Warren Zevon.
Over the years, Maimone’s artistry has taken him across the country, performing alongside icons like Stevie Wonder and touring with bands such as Blues Traveler and the Plain White T’s. He’s graced stages at major festivals, including Lollapalooza, Riot Fest, and Summer Camp, and his music has been featured in TV shows, films, and even on the Chicago Cubs’ Wrigley Field playlist. Recognized as a Local Artist of the Week by Nashville’s Lightning 100 FM and recently featured in LA Weekly after relocating to Los Angeles, Maimone continues to solidify his place in the American music landscape.
Following Bragman’s passing, Maimone released Borrowed Tunes, Vol. 2: Songs for You, an album of covers that held special meaning for the couple. The project wasn’t just a personal catharsis; it was also a charitable effort. Maimone performed sold-out release shows in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago, donating all proceeds to The Trevor Project, an organization Bragman deeply supported.
Maimone’s creative journey didn’t stop there. In 2024, he unveiled Unfollow, an experimental EP featuring five reimagined versions of the same song, each in a different genre. He also completed his first book, a memoir chronicling his transformative

FEATURE LADY BUNNY RELEASES “HOT TO BLOW” A PARODY AND LOVE LETTER TO LUIGI MANGIONE
BY MIKE BAHR
Accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione has a message for his admirers: Please stop sending so many photos. Mangione, 26, has apparently received so many photos while detained at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center that his defense team addressed them on a website. “Luigi appreciates the photos that are sent and kindly asks that people send no more than five photos at a time,” the update reads. “Please note that every photo that is received is screened and reviewed by law enforcement.”
Never one to miss an opportunity for mischief, comedian Lady
Bunny has decided to respond in her own way—by sending him a video instead. “Since Luigi doesn’t want a flood of fan photos, I thought, why not give him a whole damn music video?”
Filmed in Woodstock, NY, and directed by Heidi Sjursen and Jeffrey Abell of Out of the Woods Productions, “Hot To Blow” is more than just a riotous romp. The ongoing flips Chappell Roan’s viral sensation “Hot To Go” on its head with Bunny’s signature mix of camp, comedy, and razor-sharp social commentary. The video, with
BUNNY PINK PONY - PHOTO BY STEVEN LOVE MENENDEZ
photographer Steven Love Menendez playing Luigi, captures Bunny at her most unfiltered, blending bawdy humor with biting political critique.
Despite its irreverence, the parody serves as a stark commentary on the American healthcare crisis. “I’m not part of the #FreeLuigi crowd and I’m not campaigning for his release,” Lady Bunny makes clear. “I don’t support pulling out a gun like Luigi did, but I do have to wonder, what made him act? I encourage all US citizens to call their representatives and ask them why the USA has the highest healthcare costs and some of the worst healthcare outcomes, and why even after the meager improvements of Obamacare, medical expenses are still the #1 cause of bankruptcy.”
Bunny doesn’t hold back in calling out the failures of both political parties, particularly their lack of action on universal healthcare. “68,000 Americans die each year due to lack of access to healthcare,” she states. “Insurance companies like United Healthcare and AvMed deny a third of their customers’ claims. We pay premiums every month, yet when we get sick, many of our claims are denied. It’s a racket.”
The drag icon also critiques progressive politicians for dropping the fight for Medicare for All. “I supported Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020 because he ran on Medicare for All, but now even the House Progressive Caucus has dropped it from their 2025 platform. That’s why I call The Squad ‘Diddly Squat’—because that’s about how hard they fight corporate interests.”
Equal parts hilarious and hard-hitting, “Hot To Blow” reaffirms that Lady Bunny is as bold and relevant as ever. Whether you’re
tuning in for the outrageous comedy or the scathing political critique, one thing is certain: Bunny is still serving it up, hot and fresh.

BRAD PRESCOTT STEPS UP IN SUPPORT OF PLAZA THEATRE RESTORATION
The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation announced that Brad Prescott, through the Prescott Foundation, has donated $1 million to the restoration effort to restore and reopen the historic Plaza Theatre. In addition to the initial $1 million donation, Prescott has challenged the Foundation to secure another $1 million – which he has pledged to match dollar to dollar, effectively raising up to $3 million for the project.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled about Brad Prescott’s incredibly generous donation to help restore the Plaza Theatre,” said J.R. Roberts, President of the Plaza Theatre Foundation board. “Brad isn’t just a friend—he and The Prescott Foundation are true heroes for their dedication to preserving more than 130 acres of open space, including the Prescott Preserve, for all of us to enjoy. But he didn’t stop there. Brad and his organization raised the stakes offering an additional $1 million in a dollar-to- dollar match. I look forward to meeting with anyone interested in matching this generous gift.
“It’s an honor to contribute to the Plaza Theatre restoration –not just for the theatre itself, but for the people of Palm Springs,” said Brad Prescott. “My passion has always been preserving open space so future generations can enjoy it. But I’ve come to realize that saving historic architecture is also vital. I’m proud to support J.R. and the incredible work of the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation to bring this theatre back to life.” Located in the heart of downtown
Palm Springs and built in 1936, the Plaza Theatre was a vibrant home for film premieres and screenings, nationally broadcast radio programs, and other performances. In its later years, the theater was home to the long running “The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies.” It had fallen into disrepair and has been closed since 2014. The comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation will provide essential infrastructure repairs, installation of new theatrical equipment, and structural improvements to ensure that the building meets current fire prevention and American Disabilities Act mandates. When the restoration is complete, the Plaza Theatre will be poised to continue to provide the city and its visitors with top notch entertainment for years to come.
Earlier this month Oak View Group, which will operate the Theatre, announced a preview of its star-studded lineup of initial performances beginning with Lily Tomlin on December 2 and 3, 2025. “This announcement marks a pivotal moment in the Plaza Theatre’s next act,” said John Bolton, Oak View Group Senior Vice President and Plaza Theatre General Manager. “We are thrilled to offer a sneak peek of our inaugural season of events with many more shows to be announced in the very near future. These initial ten shows spotlight the Plaza Theatre’s ability to host world-class entertainment from comedy to music to theatre to opera to classical music to family events and movies with special guest stars,” added Bolton. CINDY MARINANGEL IS DIETRICH IN THE ACCLAIMED, ONE WOMAN PLAY THAT HONORS LEGENDARY PERFORMER, MARLENE DIETRICH
Cindy Marinangel is DIETRICH in a compelling and acclaimed one-woman show about iconic film star and German actress Marlene Dietrich, scheduled on April 4 & 5 at Revolution Stage Company.
DIETRICH, written by Willard Manus, starring Cindy Marinangel, directed by Glenda Morgan Brown and produced by Sea Angel Productions., LLC is based on a true story. Set in May 1960, the play takes place when the actress returned to the Berlin stage for the first time since fleeing the Hitler regime in the 1930’s. Inside her dressing room at the Tatania-Palast Theater, Dietrich weighs whether to go through with the live performance despite threats on her life by Nazi sympathizers who resented her for having spent much of World War II entertaining American soldiers on the front lines. To them, Dietrich is a turncoat; a traitor who deserves to be shot and killed on stage. Marlene Dietrich is famous for starring in seven films with Jewish director Josefvon Sternberg from 1930-1935. She also donated her entire film salary from A Foreign Affair to help Jews come to America, securing housing and jobs for them. She was personally responsible for selling more WWII war bonds than anyone.
Marlene Dietrich was awarded the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Ordre national de la Legion d’honneur from France. She was also awarded the Israeli Medallion of Valor in 1965, becoming both the first German-born person and the first woman to receive such an honor. Neither Dietrich nor her Hungarian
composer, Bela Bartok, were Jewish. But both had stood up for Jews in their countries, which made them unwelcome at home.
Dietrich, like many European performers who had found success in their native countries, moved to Hollywood before the Nazis’ rise to power. Dietrich enraged the regime by becoming an American citizen in 1937. That anger simmered for years as the actress continued to show sensitivity to Jews well past the end of the war. During a 1960 visit to Israel, for instance, she asked the audience’s permission before singing in German, according to The Central Zionist Archives.
DIETRICH (formerly known as MARLENE) celebrated its World Premiere at the Brickhouse Theatre in Los Angeles, debuted in New York at the Hudson Guild Theatre as part of the New York Theatre Festival’s annual Winterfest and was selected for the New York New Works Theatre Festival at the Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row. DIETRICH has enjoyed success as a Guest Performance in The Other Space at the Santa Monica Playhouse and limited runs at The Triad Theater, a celebrated Off-Broadway house in New York.
DIETRICH will play: Friday and Saturday, April 4th and 5th, 2024 @ 8 PM PDT
Location: Revolution Stage Company 611 S Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92264 (Downtown PS near Revivals) www.dietrichplay.com

PERSPECTIVE IS GRIEF GOOD?
BY JILL LANGHAM
“Good grief, Charlie Brown” a phrase that expresses surprise or dismay at a situation, person or feeling. It is often used by the character Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip according to www. oxforddictionaries.com
I was unaware that I had never experienced this particular emotion until this past January but know that so many people in our community have been dealing with grief for decades. Now it was my turn.
I have lost more people in the last 20 years than I ever could have imagined and have been very, very sad. Some of the deaths have involved suicide, a few murders, some tragic accidents, and many from medical conditions that could no longer be controlled. I lost both of my parents during these 20 years, two aunts and an uncle but it was the loss of my friend, Gerard that affected me on a cellular, psychic and physical level causing me to experience this deep-seeded grief that took over my life.
There is never a right or proper day to die but his death on
January 1, 2025, was very powerful. I had come down with one of the flu’s that was affecting 1000’s of us right here in Palm Springs. I had a high fever of over 101.4 over a 4-day period beginning on December 29. I was mildly hallucinating, was listless and had pain all over my body. I was following the old adage, “Starve a fever, feed a cold,” which means I was only drinking water to the tune of 1 full gallon, totaling 6 gallons in 6 days.
When Gerard’s husband contacted me on December 30 to tell me about Gerard’s situation, I really thought he was exaggerating the seriousness of it all, mainly because I couldn’t wrap the information around my fever addled brain. But it was the truth, and the following day his life saving equipment was turned off and he was no longer with us.
I cried then, as anyone would and then I continued to cry for another 10 days. I never tried to stop myself because I think tears are natural, but I was taking notice that it was both spontaneous and out of my control once it began.
I had returned to work a week after I got ill so the New Year was already underway. I felt weak and knew that I had lost some weight but still did not recognize that I was experiencing grief, I still believed it was sadness. Many of my lovely friends had checked on me during my sickness. And, after my post on Facebook, I had over 650 people reach out to offer their condolences. The wonderful community at Steel Gym welcomed me with open arms but they could also tell that I was struggling.
I didn’t appreciate that the muscles in my face were no longer firm but kept thinking that I had gotten older over night and it both scared and concerned me because I couldn’t imagine what had happened since I survived COVID in March of 2020, days before our state shut down and still looked like Jill.
I’ve always been an open book, so I shared my concern with my friends and clients who regularly see me up close and personal. I think we’re being neutral and kind when they said that they had only noticed a “little change,” in my looks.
The worrier and investigator in me tried to figure out what was going on. But as you can imagine, the more I worried, the worse the lines got until I was driving myself crazy. It was now close to the end of the third week of the year and outside of going to work Monday through Friday, I was spending all my time at home as I had no desire to go out. I realized that I was now depressed but was still unaware of this new emotion, grief.
It wasn’t until I found myself watching several movies and series about what else, grief that I realized I was grieving. And boy did that hit me hard. I put a little pressure on myself to try to socialize
but was that a mistake. I went out on a Friday night thinking it would help, but it instead made me feel worse. I lasted about 90 minutes before I headed home at 6:45pm. I stayed away from the clubs until the middle of February when I finally had enough energy and felt like Jill that I went out. This time I lasted 3-1/2 hours and connected with everyone but was unable to dance in a crowd.
Finally, on President’s Day weekend, after spending both Friday and Saturday nights alone, was I able to go out on Sunday night to host a dance party and truly felt alive. I danced for 4 hours and 40 minutes straight and burned 1,321 calories! I was back in my body and the grief was subsiding to a melancholic appreciation for this wonderful friend of mine who was no longer in physical form. The heavy lines on my face were almost gone and I was able to smile again.
So, for me it truly was Good Grief. Gerard is with me every day, whether I am in the gym, or at home where over our the course of our 13-year friendship he bestowed upon me many special gifts; the grocery store where we often visited together; the bars and clubs we danced “like nobody was watching;” the numerous Starbucks that we frequented especially during COVID, but mostly in my heart, which he made so full by the love he so freely gave to me.
I will miss you forever, my dear friend and I know, just like now that the tears will come and go over my lifetime for when you love someone you do go on, but you never forget them.
XOXO,
Jill, your ever-learning DQ
MUSTSEE THE 13TH ANNUAL QUEERTIES AWARDS
BY PAUL HUTNICK
The Queerties Awards return for their 13th year, shining a spotlight on the most impactful moments in LGBTQ+ entertainment and culture. Set to take place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at The Avalon in Hollywood, the event promises a night of celebration, recognition, and community. For those unable to attend in person, the awards will stream nationwide on WOW Presents Plus starting March 18, joining the platform’s rich library of LGBTQ+ content, which includes original series, World of Wonder-produced documentaries, and the global Drag Race franchise.
The Queerties, produced by Queerty and its parent company Q.Digital, honor excellence across music, television, film, literature, and more. The awards uniquely focus on LGBTQ+ creators, tastemakers, and storytellers who often go unrecognized by mainstream award shows. “The Queerties gives voice to the LGBTQ+ community,” says Scott Gatz, CEO of Q.Digital. “It’s the pop culture awards show where queer people honor the best of the best, voting for the talent and creatives who inspire and pave the way for the next generation of queer youth.”
This year’s ceremony will be hosted by the incomparable Bob the Drag Queen, known for winning RuPaul’s Drag Race, competing on The Traitors, hosting HBO’s We’re Here, and authoring the novel Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert. Bob brings charisma, humor, and activism to the role, making them the perfect emcee for the evening. “It’s important to devote more focus to LGBTQ+ artists and content due to the attacks coming from the current administration that attempt to not only minimize but essentially erase the existence of people,” says Bob the Drag Queen. “Which is not possible, but they’re trying to make people feel unacknowledged.”
BOB THE DRAG QUEEN
Bob emphasizes the deeper significance of LGBTQ+ representation in media. “Engaging with queer content builds community. It does more than you could imagine,” they add. The Queerties stand as a testament to that mission, highlighting the creative achievements and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.
The 13th Annual Queerties boast an impressive list of nominees, reflecting a groundbreaking year of LGBTQ+ representation and success. In the coveted “Badass” category, which honors the year’s top LGBTQ+ newsmakers, pop sensation Chappell Roan and trans Latina filmmaker and actress Nava Mau lead the nominations. Both figures have broken barriers and set new standards in their respective fields.
In the world of fashion, the “Style Icon” category celebrates individuals whose personal style transcends trends and makes a cultural impact. This year’s nominees include Emmy-winning actress Laverne Cox (Clean Slate) and visionary Filipino American fashion designer Zaldy Goco, known for his avant-garde creations that have graced stages and red carpets worldwide.
The “Coming Out for Good” category, which recognizes individuals who shared powerful coming-out stories in 2025, features an inspiring lineup. Nominees include chart-topping singer Khalid for his heartfelt public revelation, country star Maren Morris for her advocacy and visibility within the LGBTQ+ community, and Drag Race alum Detox, who continues to use their platform to champion queer causes.
Outstanding performances in film and television are also celebrated. Elliot Page earns a nomination in the “Film Performance” category for his role in Close to You, while Justice Smith is recognized for his work in the psychological thriller I Saw the TV Glow. In the television categories, Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story), Yasmin Finney (Heartstopper), and Aubrey Plaza (Agatha All Along) are honored for their dynamic and memorable performances.
The music world sees its own share of rising LGBTQ+ stars in the “Breakout Musical Artist” category. Young Miko, Joy Oladokun, and Drag Race alum Luxx Noir London are all vying for the title, each bringing their unique sounds and stories to the forefront of the industry.

MUSTSEE
This year’s Queerties also shine a spotlight on LGBTQ+ literature at a time when book bans and censorship efforts are on the rise. The “Best Queer Read” category includes American Teenager by Nico Lang, Rebel Girl by Kathleen Hanna, and The T in LGBT by Jamie Raines, all of which offer profound insights into queer identities and experiences.
What sets the Queerties apart is its community-driven voting process. Nominees are selected by Queerty’s editorial team, but
the winners are chosen by the readers themselves, ensuring that the awards truly reflect the voices and opinions of the LGBTQ+ community.
As the entertainment landscape continues to evolve, the Queerties stand as a beacon of inclusivity and recognition. In a world where LGBTQ+ representation still faces significant challenges, the awards offer a moment to celebrate resilience, creativity, and the power of queer storytelling.
