EXPRESS YOURSELF LGBTQ+ ARTISTIC INSIGHT

The visual arts have long been a part of exploring queer life: from subtle suggestions in paintings during times when homosexuality was widely criminalized, to the raw liberation of protest art. As contemporary LGBTQ+ artists continue to express themes of love, loss, resistance, and resilience, social platforms like Instagram have seen explosions of queer art. The artists below portray both the big and small moments in LGBTQ+ life and beyond. Working across painting, digital art, lettering, photography, and more, these artists—some established, some rising—are well worth a follow.

NAIMA GREEN

Naima Green (@naimagreen) is a photographer, artist, and lecturer from New York City. She has exhibited extensively around New York and other US states. The image below is from PUR•SUIT, a deck of 54 playing cards that features group and individual portraits of queer people, including cis, trans, non-binary, and gendernonconforming models. They’re shot around eye-level, creating a compassionate and intimate lens. https://www.naimagreen.com/

FEWOCiOUS

Nineteen-year-old FEWOCiOUS, a.k.a. Victor Langlois (@ fewocious) shot to fame last year for crashing the Christie’s website with a collection of five paintings that were available as NFTs. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength with drops of digital art that range from 2D paintings to 3D animations. This Pride month he collaborated with Billboard magazine to create a custom cover and launched a clothing line with mental health brand Madhappy, with net profits going to the Born This Way Foundation supporting LGBTQ+ community centers in the US. https://fewocious.com/

Fans of Ru Paul’s Drag Race might already be familiar with the work of this US-based photographer. David Ayllon (@davidayllon) is a creative director, graphic designer, and photographer with a passion for superheroes and bold imagery. His work has been featured in Huffington Post, Creative Quarterly, Playboy Magazine, and more. Some of his past clients include Elvira and Todrick Hall, as well as Drag Race winners Trixie Mattel and Sasha Velour. https://www.davidayllon.com/index.php

SALMAN TOOR

Salman Toor’s (@salman.toor) work feels like you are looking into his subjects’ lives through a window. Toor was born in Pakistan and now lives in New York, where he studied his MFA. His work has been exhibited internationally. Many of his earth-toned works are in oil, combining classical techniques with a sketch-y look that adds dynamism and a friendly atmosphere. Subjects play on their phones, laugh, and dance together in moments of connection and simplicity. https://www.instagram.com/salman.toor/?hl=en

ART & POLITICS NAVIGATING THESE DIFFICULT TIMES COVER

The year is 2025. The political landscape, perpetually in flux, presents both challenges and opportunities for LGBTQ+ artists. Depending on legislative shifts, social attitudes shaped by recent policy, and the evolving power of digital platforms, the environment for queer creatives is a complex tapestry. This article explores the potential terrain, examining the hurdles LGBTQ+ artists might face and the strategies they might employ to thrive and create impactful work.

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES

LEGISLATIVE RESTRICTIONS ON EXPRESSION

In a political climate marked by conservative resurgence, we might see increased attempts to censor LGBTQ+ content in art. This could manifest as defunding of arts organizations that support queer artists, restrictions on art exhibited in public spaces, or even legal challenges to works deemed ‘obscene’ or ‘promoting a lifestyle.’ The chilling effect of such legislation could lead to self-censorship and a reluctance to explore challenging or explicitly queer themes.

EROSION OF SAFE SPACES

A more hostile political climate could lead to a contraction of safe spaces for LGBTQ+ artists. Galleries, performance venues, and community centers that historically provided a platform for queer voices might face pressure to conform or even shut down. This would disproportionately affect emerging artists who rely on these spaces for exposure and support.

ONLINE HARASSMENT AND DOXXING

The digital realm, both a lifeline and a minefield, could become even more dangerous. Increased polarization could lead to a surge in online harassment, doxxing, and targeted attacks against LGBTQ+ artists who express their identities or political views through their work. This could force artists offline, stifle their creativity, and create a culture of fear.

COMMODIFICATION OF QUEER ART

Conversely, in a climate where inclusivity becomes a marketing strategy, the danger of commodification looms large. Corporations might superficially embrace LGBTQ+ artists and themes for profit, diluting the authenticity and power of their work. This could lead to a feeling of exploitation and a disconnect from the community.

FUNDING DISPARITIES

Depending on policy changes, access to grants and funding specifically earmarked for LGBTQ+ artists might diminish, making it harder for them to sustain their practice and bring their projects to fruition. This could exacerbate existing inequalities and limit representation within the art world.

STRATEGIES FOR THRIVING

Despite these potential challenges, LGBTQ+ artists have historically demonstrated resilience and creativity in the face of adversity.

Here are some strategies that could help them navigate the 2025 political climate:

BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES

Strengthening existing LGBTQ+ artist collectives and creating new ones is crucial. These communities can provide mutual support, mentorship, and a platform for collective action. Sharing resources, skills, and strategies can empower artists to resist censorship and navigate hostile environments.

LEVERAGING DIGITAL PLATFORMS STRATEGICALLY

While facing online harassment, artists can also utilize digital platforms for visibility and advocacy. Creating alternative online spaces, using encryption and anonymity tools, and building decentralized networks can help protect artists and their work from censorship and surveillance.

FORMING ALLIANCES WITH ALLIES

Building bridges with artists and organizations outside the LGBTQ+ community is essential. This involves collaborating on projects, advocating for shared values, and amplifying each other’s voices. Solidarity across different marginalized groups can create a stronger movement for social justice.

EXPLORING ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF EXPRESSION

When traditional avenues are closed, artists can innovate and explore alternative forms of expression. Performance art, street art,

DOCUMENTING AND PRESERVING QUEER HISTORY

In a climate where LGBTQ+ rights are under threat, preserving and documenting queer history becomes even more critical. Artists can use their work to tell stories, reclaim narratives, and ensure that future generations understand the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community.

EMBRACING AUTHENTICITY AND RESISTANCE

The most powerful response to a hostile political climate is to remain true to oneself and one’s artistic vision. By continuing to create authentic, challenging, and thought-provoking work, LGBTQ+ artists can resist attempts to silence them and inspire others to do the same.

THE POWER OF ART

In the face of political uncertainty, the role of LGBTQ+ artists becomes even more vital. Their work can serve as a powerful form of resistance, a catalyst for social change, and a beacon of hope for the future. By creating work that is honest, vulnerable, and unapologetically queer, these artists can challenge prevailing narratives, foster empathy, and inspire a more just and equitable world, regardless of the political winds. The 2025 landscape may be fraught with difficulties, but the enduring power of art to inform, inspire, and connect us will remain a vital force in the struggle for LGBTQ+ liberation.

guerilla theater, and community-based projects can bypass censorship and reach audiences in unexpected ways.

ARTISTPROFILE READ BROWN PERSPECTIVE THROUGH A CAMERA LENS

As a Contemporary Art photographer, Read Brown is captivated by the decisive moments that unfold in both nature and human interaction. These moments offer intriguing perspectives, allowing for exploration of art and detail found in everyday experiences, elements, and objects.

Whether it’s a grand landscape or the shocking detail of an avocado pit, Read is driven by the compositions that constantly catch her eye and her need to capture complex and unique perspectives. She finds that the composition is always revealing itself. Always enjoying the unexpected moment or detail. From a simple lawn sprinkler to a crow bathing in a fountain, each object becomes an invitation to explore new textures, colors, and compositions.

One aspect of Read’s creative process is digital manipulation. transforming images to resemble paintings by experimenting with saturation and contrast levels, which can dramatically alter shadows and highlights. This process is both enjoyable and transformative, offering a new way to perceive the world. However, it is the decisive moment and the real yet unconventional perspective that truly compels her to take the shot, as they always seem to invite a story to be told.

Read Brown’s journey into philanthropy was a natural next step. Co-chairing DAP Health’s Partners for Life Giving Program became the latest chapter in her story, one that combines her passion for storytelling and amplifying voices with her commitment to creating positive change. Her dedication extends not only to supporting local causes but also to championing those who need it most – often through quiet acts of kindness that speak volumes about the human spirit.

As someone who has lived and traveled extensively throughout the US and beyond, Read brings an ever-evolving perspective on the world around her. Traveling throughout Italy, she explored every street and canal she could tuck into. The experiences left her captivated by the country’s vibrant culture, rich history, and architecture . Traveling also took her to Mexico, where she was struck by the resilience and warmth of its people, as well as Cuba, with its unique blend of colonial architecture, traditions, and where music and art surrounded her.

Through this travel experience, Read developed a deep appreciation for the ways in which different cultures intersect and inform one another. This perspective is reflected in her work, which often incorporates elements of global artistry and storytelling. Her

photographs are not simply reflections of reality but also invitations to engage with the world anew.

Read Brown’s creative spirit is contagious, inspiring those around her to see the world through fresh eyes and appreciate the beauty hidden within ordinary moments. Her passion for storytelling through photography reminds us that even the most mundane subjects can be saturated in deeper meaning… when observed closely enough.

One of Read’s greatest strengths as an artist is her ability to balance creativity with practicality. As a real estate agent, Read is uniquely attuned to people’s motivations and desires, knowing that it’s not just about price or features – but also about how they connect emotionally with their home. This blend of artistic vision and commercial acumen has made her one of the go-to agents in the industry.

As she navigates the complexities of human relationships, Read Brown brings a keen sense of understanding that transcends mere observation. She understands how to tap into the stories behind every object, every space, and every person we meet. Her photographs are not simply reflections of reality but also invitations to engage with the world anew.

Read’s dedication to storytelling is matched only by her commitment to community building. As co-chair of DAP Health’s Partners for Life Giving Program, she works tirelessly to amplify the voices of those who need it most. Through this work, she embodies the very essence of what makes our community special – creativity, compassion, and a deep connection to human experience.

When not working on a project, selling real estate or participating in community efforts, Read can be found capturing life’s simple moments through her lens, and nurturing her own creative spirit.

For Read Brown, the world is full of stories waiting to be told –even within ourselves. As we navigate our everyday lives, it’s easy to overlook the intricate details that surround us. But as photographers, artists, and human beings, we have the power to reveal these secrets, one frame at a time.

In Read Brown’s hands, life itself becomes art – Read Brown’s work will invite you to see the world through her eyes, appreciate hidden beauty, and connect on a deeper level.

BOOK REVIEW ALWAYS OVERBOOKED

Y ou’re several weeks in, and it hasn’t gotten any easier.

You made your New Year’s resolutions with forethought, purpose, and determination but after all this time, you still struggle, ugh. You’ve backslid. You’ve cheated because change is hard. It’s sometimes impossible. And in the new book, “Shame-Sex Attraction” by Lucas F. W. Wilson, it can be exceptionally traumatic. Progress does not come without problem.

While it’s true that the LGBTQ community has been adversely affected by the current administration, there are still things to be happy about, when it comes to civil rights and acceptance. Still, says Wilson, one “particularly slow-moving aspect… has been the fight against what is widely known as conversion therapy.”

Such practices, he says, “have numerous damaging, deathdealing, and no doubt disastrous consequences.” The stories he’s collected in this volume reflect that, but they also mirror confidence and strength in the face of detrimental treatment.

Writer Gregory Elsasser-Chavez was told to breathe in something repellent every time he thought about other men. He says, in the end, he decided not to “pray away the gay.” Instead, he quips, he’d “sniff it away.”

D. Apple became her “own conversation therapist” by exhausting herself with service to others as therapy. Peter Nunn’s father took him on a surprise trip, but the surprise was a conversion facility; Nunn’s father said if it didn’t work, he’d “get rid of” his fifteen-year-old son. Chaim Levin was forced to humiliate himself as part of his therapy.

Lexie Bean struggled to make a therapist understand that they didn’t want to be a man because they were “both.” Jordan Sullivan writes of the years it takes “to re-integrate and become whole” after conversion therapy. Chris Csabs writes that he “tried everything to find the root of my problem” but “Nothing so far had worked.”

Says Syre Klenke of a group conversion session, “My heart shattered over and over as people tried to console and encourage each other…. I wonder if each of them is okay and still with us today.”

Here’s a bit of advice for reading “Shame-Sex Attraction”: dip into the first chapter, maybe the second, then go back and read the foreword and introduction, and resume.

The reason: author Lucas F. W. Wilson’s intro is deep and steep,

full of footnotes and statistics, and if you’re not prepared or you didn’t come for the education, it might scare you away. No, the subtitle of this book is likely why you’d pick the book up so because that’s what you just really wanted, indulge before backtracking.

You won’t be sorry; the first stories are bracing, and they’ll steel you for the rest, for the emotion and the tears, the horror and the unexpected humor.

Be aware that there are triggers all over inside this book, especially if you’ve been subjected to anything like conversion therapy yourself. Remember, though, that the survivors are just that: survivors, and their strength is what makes this book worthwhile. Even so, though “Shame-Sex Attraction” is an essential read, that doesn’t make it any easier.

PALM SPRINGS GAY MEN’S CHORUS 25TH SEASON CONTINUES WITH “DISNEY PRIDE IN CONCERT”

The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus (PSGMC) continues its 25th season concert line-up with a nostalgic look into the World of Disney. Following a completely sold-out holiday show in December, PSGMC had auditions and now boasts 115 singers on its roster in one of the most talented and diverse freshman classes in the Chorus’ 25-year history. PSGMC will present Disney Pride In Concert, April 24 - 27, 2025.

PSGMC is honored and privileged to be the official gay men’s chorus of the City of Palm Springs and presents its stage concerts in the heart of the city at the Palm Springs Art Museum Annenberg Theater. Concerts do sell out, so it is recommended to buy your tickets early.

“Disney Pride in Concert” is one of those magical, once-in-alifetime events that stirs so much emotion for singers and audiences alike. The program contains music from Disney and Pixar movies old and new - from Pinocchio to Peter Pan to Lion King to Toy Story and Mary Poppins; and modern Disney and Pixar movies like Coco and Zootopia. Audiences will also experience songs from all their favorite Disneyland rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, It’s a Small World and The Tiki Room. The arrangements by Chad Weirick of the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, are beautifully written and the visual elements, provided by Disney, are brilliantly married to the music, creating a program that has guaranteed, built-in TLC - tears, laughter and chill bumps!” said Jerry R. Soria-Foust, Artistic Director, PSGMC.

Jerry R. Soria-Foust joined the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus in September 2021 as a professional music educator and arts leader, with a career spanning more than 25 years. From 2005-2009, Jerry served as Artistic Director for the San Diego Men’s Chorus, where he led the chorus through several milestones, including performing as main stage entertainment on an ocean liner for RSVP cruises, singing the national anthem for the San Diego Padres, and becoming the resident choral ensemble in the newly renovated Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego. He also has held artistic and executive leadership positions with Berkeley Playhouse and Windy City Performs. He currently teaches in the Palm Springs Unified School District.

FEATURE TAKE 5 WITH PSGMC ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, JERRY R. SORIA-FOUST

You were named Artistic Director of PSGMC almost 4 years ago, can you tell us how that came about?

My passion for working in the GALA Choruses network began at the age of 19, when I sang in the very first season of the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus under the baton of Michael Hayden, who was also my college conducting teacher and now close friend and mentor. The first time I heard 60 men singing in four-part harmony and celebrating their diversity openly and authentically, I fell in love. And I’ve stayed madly in love ever since--as a singer, volunteer and now artistic director/conductor. I served as assistant director for the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus for a while in the late 90’s, founded my

own select men’s ensemble in Berkeley in 2002, and then became Artistic Director of the San Diego Men’s Chorus from 2005-2009.

Of course, Palm Springs is a magical place and given that my family was making a move to Southern California anyway, I jumped at the chance to lead this amazing organization - now celebrating its 25th season! Every moment has been a joy, watching the chorus membership, fundraising and collaborations grow like never before, being a part of the “next chapter” of this group. And standing in front of 120 singers, all raising their voices with common purpose is like no other experience. It’s truly a dream!

PSGMC JERRY SORIA FOUST

It is obvious that music is a great passion of yours, was that always the case?

And if so, when did you realize it would become your career?

I always wanted to be a teacher. I was inspired by my high school band director to audition for music school and become a music educator. I’m now going on my 30th year of working in education in one way or another--from elementary to higher education.

I think my sensibilities as an educator really serve me well as the conductor of a community ensemble with such a range of experience in skills. In partnership with our amazing vocal coach, Doug Nagel and the other talented leaders on my team, we are not only holding rehearsals, but we are also teaching vocal technique, stage presence, music theory, music history, and so much more. I love seeing light bulbs go off for my adult singers just as much as I do the little ones. It’s such a joy to be a part of building people up to heights they didn’t know they could reach.

When you became director, you did have certain goals you wanted to carry out with the chorus, have you attained those goals?

Every season, I set new artistic goals for the singers and the organization. The goals are designed to keep us growing and improving every single time we go out on stage. I am always striving to bring more diverse repertoire, to make our chorus a welcoming place for all singers, and to build healthy singing habits.

My artistic goals are coordinated with the strategic goals of the organization, set out in our five-year strategic plan. We are blessed to have a forward-thinking board that has built resources and infrastructure to support our dynamic artistic vision.

What are some things you would still like to accomplish with the chorus?

We have quite a few exciting initiatives coming next season. Although I can’t yet announce the specifics of 2025-26 yet, our audiences and our community will see us doing more outreach and collaboration with organizations who are standing up for human and civil rights, bigger and better concert productions, more commissioned music, the return of our Jingle Bell Express tour bus to Riverside County, and some sparkly, fabulous program choices! All of this is in line with our goal to bring light and love to a sometimes dark and uncertain world.

I know that you are very excited about your upcoming concert, what can we as the audience expect? Any surprises you can share?

Disney Pride In Concert was conceived by the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus during COVID, with music arranged by Chad Weirick. It’s been performed in Boston, San Francisco, LA, Fort Lauderdale, and now Palm Springs! The piece is a two-hour musical and audio/visual walk down memory lane. It features the Disney stories and characters that so many of us have cherished over the years, and it’s presented in a way that celebrates community, family, and of course, pride.

Working with Disney to present this exciting show has been a years-long process. Audiences will be treated to music from all the classic stories like Peter Pan, Cinderella, Pinocchio, etc. Plus, there is music from more recent hits, like Coco and Frozen, and some of the Pixar movies, including Toy Story and Monsters, Inc.

There are some gorgeous visual moments, and some harmonies that are truly chill-bump moments! The coordination of the video elements with the music is just spectacular!

DINING OUT FOR LIFE GREATER PALM SPRINGS 2025

More than 20,000 hungry humanitarians will be out in full force to support DAP Health, as the desert’s favorite culinary benefit returns for its 21st year, aiming to top the international leaderboard.

Foodie philanthropists across Greater Palm Springs are gearing up for one of the most impactful dining events of the year. Dining Out For Life® — the beloved North American annual fundraiser that has raised nearly $100 million to support people living with or affected by HIV since 1991 — returns to the desert on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

For more than two decades, DAP Health has led the charge locally, rallying full-time residents, snowbirds, and tourists alike to dine with purpose. Participating restaurants, bars, cafés, and bakeries across the Coachella Valley will generously donate anywhere from 30% to 110% of their entire day’s and night’s sales — not just the profits — to support DAP Health’s lifesaving programs and wraparound services.

Thanks to the enthusiastic backing of local food and beverage establishments, volunteers, and supporters, Greater Palm Springs consistently ranks as one of the nation’s most successful Dining Out For Life markets. In 2024, 75 participating venues helped raise over $280,000 — outpacing cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. This year, with more than 20,000 diners expected, Greater Palm Springs is setting its sights on securing the number one spot nationwide.

“And it’s more than possible that we’ll achieve that for 2025,” says DAP Health Chief of Brand Marketing Steven Henke, who will be kicking off the day reporting live for the fifth consecutive year as a special correspondent for media partner NBC Palm Springs. “Our local restaurants participate at a higher level, giving more generously. Our eager local foodies show their civic pride by sporting multiple colorful ‘I Dined’ stickers as badges of honor throughout the day and evening.”

DAPHEALTH

Powerful Event Partners

As always, DAP Health’s generous media sponsors are committed to spreading the good word far and wide, led by the aforementioned NBC Palm Springs. Others stepping up in a big way include The Desert Sun, Alpha Media, The Standard Magazine, GED Magazine, and KGAY radio.

DAP Health is excited to also announce new partnerships that will further amplify the event and drive diners to participating locations.

• For the first time, Visit Greater Palm Springs has signed on as a sponsor of the event, lending its keen insights around hospitality and tourism. In addition to promoting the event to local partners, the organization will be tapping its social media platforms and drive market billboards to ensure this year’s event is on everyone’s must-do list.

• The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce has joined the communal effort, and is activating its ambassadors to help grow event participation in the cities it represents.

• Finally, the social-first content of local culinary social media influencers (and husbands!) David Witzke and David Cox, of Dining With the Davids, will shine a bright light on participating locations while explaining how Dining Out For Life Greater Palm Springs makes a meaningful impact in our community.

“At Visit Greater Palm Springs, we believe a thriving community is built on compassion, inclusivity, and support for those in need,” says VGPS VP of Government and Industry Relations Davis Meyer. “That’s why we’re honored to be a partner in DAP Health’s Dining Out For Life Greater Palm Springs 2025. This initiative not only brings

people together over great food, but also fuels critical programs that provide health care and support services to our neighbors. By uniting hospitality and philanthropy, we can help create a healthier, stronger, and more connected Greater Palm Springs for everyone.”

“Every year, Dining Out For Life is such a great, win-win-win way for our countless supporters to come out and engage in a philanthropic feast,” adds DAP Health CEO David Brinkman. “With the backing of three great new partnerships, plus the usual, muchappreciated endorsement from our many media partners, I fully expect this year to be the best one yet. So, get those forks, spoons, and knives out and let’s go to town and eat our way to number one!”

Why DOFLGPS Matters

HIV is not over! According to the CDC — despite the relatively widespread availability of PrEP and PEP for the prevention of HIV — in 2022 in the U.S., there were 31,800 new HIV infections. For that same year, it is estimated that 1.2 million people over the age of 13 were living with HIV in America. Of those, only 87% were aware of their status, while 13% had not officially been tested and/or diagnosed.

Dining Out For Life is a national movement, with 50+ local HIV service organizations, 2,400+ participating restaurants, and 300,000+ diners raising over $4.5 million annually. Best of all, every dollar raised in Greater Palm Springs stays here, ensuring not only that those living with HIV receive the care and support they need, but that education and prevention efforts are protected and expanded.

How to Get Involved:

• Visit daphealth.org/dofl to find participating locations.

• Tell all your family, friends, and co-workers you are participating this year, and get them to join in on the philanthropic foodie fun.

• Make reservations early — tables fill up fast!

• Dine out as often as possible on Thursday, April 24 — breakfast, lunch, dinner, happy hour, and/or late-night.

• Encourage your favorite eateries to join in if they’ve not already decided to participate.

Mark your calendars, spread the word, and get ready to dine out, give back, and make history.

MODERNISM WEEK MARKED 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH RECORD-BREAKING NUMBERS

Modernism Week celebrated its milestone twentieth year in February 2025, reaching new heights with an expanded slate of more than 500 events – a new record – over the course of its 11-day festival. Held from February 13–23 across multiple cities in the Greater Palm Springs area, the internationally recognized architecture and design festival drew an estimated 115,000 attendees, maintaining its strong audience engagement from previous years.

Dedicated to honoring and exploring midcentury and modern design, architecture, art, and culture, Modernism Week continues to be a major cultural and economic driver for the region. This year’s event generated an estimated economic impact of $62.7 million, contributing to a cumulative total of more than $500 million since its inception two decades ago.

Modernism Week offered a variety of new events alongside the return of audience favorites, including architectural tours, engaging presentations, and iconic parties. Collaborating with more than 60 partner organizations, 30 neighborhoods, and 90 sponsors,

Modernism Week expanded its reach across Palm Springs and five additional desert cities. The City of Palm Springs is Modernism Week’s Civic Presenting Sponsor. Generous contributions are also provided by the City of Indian Wells, City of La Quinta, City of Palm Desert and City of Rancho Mirage.

The outcome of Modernism Week 2025’s success will be determined later this spring with a multi-year commitment to fund college scholarships for local Coachella Valley students pursuing architecture and design. In addition to the scholarships that Modernism Week will give, the Board of Directors has also sent a $10,000 donation to the California Community Foundation’s Los Angeles Fire Relief Fund, in solidarity with their neighbors and fellow Californians. This fund provides immediate and long-term support to those affected, from rebuilding homes to restoring critical community infrastructure. Modernism Week will continue its support of relief efforts and other nonprofit initiatives in the region.

Lisa Vossler Smith CEO commented, “Our festival celebrates the global influence of Modernism while shining a spotlight on

PSP FOCUS

the architectural and design heritage of Palm Springs. It is an honor to welcome attendees from all 50 states and more than 20 countries,” said Lisa Vossler Smith, CEO of Modernism Week. “We are immensely grateful for the support of our sponsors, including Ferguson, Brizo, Dunn-Edwards Paints, Monogram, Cotino, Design Within Reach, Flor, Natural Retreats, and Willis. Their continued partnership enables us to deliver a world-class experience for our guests.” CAMP, Modernism Week’s ‘Community and Meeting Place’ and vibrant headquarters for tours and events located inside the Hyatt Hotel welcomed nearly 28,000 visitors throughout the festival.

Modernism Week attendees came from all fifty United States and the District of Columbia, with California accounting for the majority of attendees (approximately 45%). Attendees came from 460 of 482 cities in California, or 95% of all California cities. Locally, the Coachella Valley represented 38% of tickets sold in California. Beyond California, attendees traveled from Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Washington, and 25 other countries, including Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

The popular Palm Springs Modernism Show, which celebrated its 25th year, also saw strong attendance numbers. More than 14,000

people attended the popular sale at the Palm Springs Convention Center, on par with the previous year, including more than 1,200 attendees who participated in the opening night preview event that benefitted Modernism Week. The Show will return to Palm Springs for Modernism Week’s October 2025 event and again in February 2026.

“We are proud that the Palm Springs Modernism Show continues to be one of the highlights of Modernism Week,” said Rosemary Krieger, President of Dolphin Promotions, the show’s producer for 25 years. “Our dealers were extremely pleased with sales including robust sales on the opening night and throughout the four-day show.”

The festival continued to garner significant international and national media attention, generating more than 4.9 billion media impressions, up from 2.095 billion the previous year, a new record for the festival. Media coverage was reported from a wide range of media outlets.

Modernism Week – October will take place October 16-19, 2025 (tickets go on sale August 1) and Modernism Week 2026 will take place February 12-22, 2026 (tickets go on sale November 1). For more information, go to www.modernismweek.com

MUSTSEE THE WEDDING BANQUET

From Director Andrew Ahn comes a joyful comedy of errors about a chosen family navigating the disasters and delights of family expectations, queerness, and cultural identity. Angela and her partner Lee have been unlucky with their IVF treatments but can’t afford to pay for another round. Meanwhile their friend Min, the closeted scion of a multinational corporate empire, has plenty of family money but a soon-to-expire student visa. When his commitment-phobic boyfriend Chris rejects his proposal, Min makes the offer to Angela instead: a green card marriage in exchange

for funding Lee’s IVF. But their plans to quietly elope are upended when Min’s skeptical grandmother flies in from Korea unannounced, insisting on an all-out wedding extravaganza. With a pitch-perfect cast of multigenerational talent that includes Bowen Yang, Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen, and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung, this fresh reimagining of Ang Lee’s beloved, Award-winning rom-com teems with humor and heart in a poignant reminder that being part of a family means learning to both accept and forgive.

A NICE INDIAN BOY STARRING KARAN SONI & JONATHAN GROFF

Naveen Gavaskar (Karan Soni) is a self-effacing, soft-spoken doctor with a boisterous mother, seemingly perfect sister and quiet father. The Gavaskars are outwardly accepting of Naveen’s sexuality but have never had to confront it in practice.

While at temple, Naveen meets Jay Kurundkar, (Jonathan Groff) a white man adopted by two Indian parents. Naveen is slowly charmed and softened by Jay’s sincerity and confidence. They fall in love—even as Naveen avoids telling his family about Jay.

One afternoon, they run into Naveen’s brother-in-law and an embarrassed Naveen describes Jay as a “friend”. The encounter

precipitates a discussion in which Naveen admits that he, like Jay, dreams of having a big Indian wedding. Now, Jay, who has no family of his own, must meet the Gavaskars –– Naveen’s family. This causes a collision between the family, Jay—who has his own insecurities— and Naveen, caught between who he is with his family and who he is outside of it. After comic misunderstandings, frank fights, and emotional revelations, the family falls apart, questioning everything. Naveen and Jay’s hard-won love makes each of the Gavaskars face the reality of their own relationships. And through a sweetly woven reconciliation, they come together again to plan Naveen & Jay’s own big, Indian wedding.

BOOKREPORT

GET READY FOR THE FINAL CHAPTER OF “THE EDISON TRILOGY”

“It’s lovely over there,” were the last words of Thomas Alva Edison – arguably the most famous inventor of all time. As he lay dying, he seemed to glimpse into another world, a world that he believed with which he could communicate via a device he called “the spirit phone.” Now, award-winning Palm Springs author David Church has “resurrected” and reconstructed “The Wizard of Menlo Park” through his acclaimed “Edison Trilogy” (www.edisontrilogy.com) of alternative fiction, set for completion with the April publication of the ultimate volume, Thomas Edison and The Magi Solution. In a rollicking hold-onto-the-seat-of-your-pants literary rollercoaster, the seminal inventor’s quest for life beyond the grave has him partnering with other historical figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Noel Coward as he saves the world from Adolf Hitler, the Nazis and Satan himself.

“Edison’s genius wasn’t just about invention—it was about seeing possibilities where others saw limits,” says Church, 69. “I’ve always been captivated by how his work continues to ripple through history. With The Magi Solution, I wanted to explore the profound ways his legacy intersected with the challenges of war and the enduring human

spirit. Concluding this trilogy has been deeply rewarding, and I hope readers find it as thrilling and thought-provoking as I did writing it. Literally, Edison ‘lit the way’ for everything that came after.”

A former advertising executive, Church has written for publications as wildly diverse as Soap Opera Digest and Interview, authored an environmental children’s book, Larue and the Brown Sky (illustrations by Toby Bluth), co-authored the cult-musical, Judy’s Scary Little Christmas (with Jim Webber and Joe Patrick Ward) and developed a variety of films for United Artists, CBS and NBC, including Psychic Housewife, and Saving Grace. David is a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Writers Guild of America West.

“You’ve never read a World War II story like this one,” says John Hanc, award-winning journalist and author of The Coolest Race on Earth. “Church’s ability to bring historical characters to life as disparate as Noel Coward and Adolf Hitler continues to amaze. This final book in the Edison Trilogy is exhilarating.”

“The epic conclusion of the Edison Trilogy delivers the voltage,” agrees Larry Dean Harris, Artistic Director, Strong Words.” It’s been a perilously entertaining adventure for our heroes, both fictional and factual, but David Church has saved the zest for last to deliver a deliciously satisfying finale behind enemy lines and beyond our expectations.”

Thomas Edison and the Magi Solution opens in the Spring of 1945. As World War II comes to an end, John Dawkins, Edison’s intrepid former assistant, is summoned by an ailing President Roosevelt to investigate a terrifying secret report that Adolf Hitler, faced with certain loss, has made an unholy deal with the Devil to annihilate the world. Along with his wife, Sophie, an ace newspaper reporter, and their ten-year-old son, Joshua, John journeys to war-ravaged London to join forces with theatrical playboy (and undercover agent) Noel Coward. Along the way, they are reunited with the reincarnated spirit of Thomas Edison. Together, they embark on a final, death-defying adventure that propels them from the ruins

of Dresden to the bizarre mysteries of the Fuhrer’s bunker, to the bowels of Hell itself. All in all, it is a journey to find ‘the Magi’ – the only three souls left on earth who can stop Hitler’s satanic endgame.

Magi builds on the chronicle of Church’s previous two critically acclaimed novels.

Despite being known for his scientific achievements, Edison displayed a significant interest in esoteric spirituality, particularly the idea of communicating with the dead, and publicly stated his desire to create a device he called a “spirit phone” that could capture the voices of deceased individuals, which he believed was possible through scientific means. This fascination stemmed from his unique belief system that life consisted of “life units” that could persist after death and potentially be detected through technology.

“What has always interested me about Edison is that, although he was fascinated by the concept of communicating with the dead, in addition to being a fantasist, he was a pragmatist,” explains Church. “He believed that such communication could be achieved through technological innovation, such as the manipulation of sound wave frequencies, rather than traditional spiritual practices. “As for Church’s own equation for a potent mixture of fantasy and reality?

“My love of history, adventure and a sense of ‘what if’ propels my creativity,” he happily admits. “Many of my readers write me to say that my books ‘read like a movie’ – and I’d certainly love to see them translated onto the screen. For me, the pace and energy of a genre mash-up is cinematic. I’m simply painting an adventure film in words.”

And next?

“Everyone loves a trilogy,” laughs Church, noting that the triangle and pyramid are classically strong geometric forms. “After this, I’m not sure which historical character I might re-discover and thrust into an adventure. But since my Edison books have opened the door to the afterlife, the field is wide open.

PERSPECTIVE TAKING THE PLUNGE

Here we are just a few weeks into Spring, and it already feels like summer, with temperatures sailing up to 99 degrees at the height of the day and high seventies during the best part of the evenings. I don’t know about you but it sure feels glorious to me!

Personally, I am feeling the best I have in months and as part of my recovery process from the grief cycle, I have been laying out in the sun as often as possible to boost my Vitamin D levels. The other has been to engage in cold plunges which up until a few days ago was the perfect thing to do in the unheated pool closest to my condo.

The average temperature of the water in Palm Springs was about 59 degrees which according to google who further stated that, “The recommended temperature range for cold plunging is between 50-59 degrees. This is considered a safe range for beginners or those new to cold water immersion.”

At first, I thought, “No way,” could I get into this unheated pool but remember I was laying in the sun where my body was being heated up making the initial plunge much less of a shock. Neverthe-less it was still mighty cold. But surprisingly it wasn’t really all that bad.

A few times in the past when I’d been to lakes or ponds that were super cold and were challenged to get in did, I experience such a gasp of fright where I couldn’t catch my breath. I liken it to being in the showers in the dormitory during nursing school where someone forgot to yell, “Flush,” and the hot shower temperatures that I had been enjoying got replaced by Buffalo’s freezing cold water in the middle of winter and my heart would start racing and my breathing would be both erratic and double in number till I could calm myself down.

I was amazed when none of the above happened, especially when I told myself I was not going to have that reaction because I was going to that the water was warm before getting in. A bit of self-meditation allowed me to slowly get into the water up to my knees. Then I was able to step down to the first stair bringing the water up to my hips. Next, I moved down to the last step bringing the very cold water up to my chest, and then finally I dropped down low enough to immerse my shoulders.

I managed to slow down my breathing while simultaneously chanting to myself, “I am not cold!” And amazingly, it worked.

I only stayed in for one minute the first time, but within a week was up to 5 minutes. Over the last few days, I have upped that number to 11 minutes while simultaneously the outer temperatures have gone up making the water that much less cold. Now as much as I love the warmer weather(there is a limit) I am disappointed because now I am going to have to consider buying one of the portable immersion pools that is available online for as little as $60 so that I can continue for the months ahead where our pool water temperatures rise to over 100 degrees.

By now, I am certain that you are aware of some of the benefits of cold plunging but in case you’re not, here are just a few.

Enhanced mood & focus

Reduced inflammation & muscle soreness

Improved recovery & physical performance

Improved immune system

Improved resilience & stress management

Accelerated metabolism & improved cold tolerance

Now any one of these benefits would be wonderful but put them all together and you really must ask yourself, “ Why aren’t I doing this?” Personally, I can admit that all these changes have happened in a very short period, so I am quite excited to see how well I fare in the months to come when the so-called flu season is upon us.

Last year at this time I had my first of six cases of bronchitis which I attempted to heal through non-traditional methods and avoided taking any antibiotics until December when I was just fed-up. That decision caused my body to really over-react and caused major elimination problems along with weight gain, constipation and dehydration that lasted for months! I won’t be trying that again any time soon.

But, over the last 8 weeks of cold-plunging I have hardly been bothered by allergies, head colds, or even a runny nose. The longterm cough that so many of my friends and clients and I had had is completely gone and I am really feeling so much better.

The most interesting thing of all has been the increased caloric burn that I am now seeing with both my cardio and workouts. I am not saying that this provable scientific proof, but as I do the same routines 5 days a week and have for the last 5 year since purchasing my Apple Watch, I see an increase in calories burned, thus making me believe that I have accelerated my metabolism. And that just makes me happy!

So, if you haven’t ever tried it and way before the pool temperatures rise, consider laying in the sun for 15 minutes on each side of your body and then slowly or quickly ( your choice) get into your unheated pool. Start with one minute and then see how you do adding in a minute at a time. My goal is 20 minutes, so I’m a little over half-way there.

Happy Plunging!

MUSIC DESERT QUEEN KENDRA ERIKA’S NEW LGBTQ+ ANTHEM IS INSPIRED BY THE LA FIRES

Kendra Erika, the powerhouse dance artist and longtime LGBTQ+ ally, is back to set the dance floor ablaze with her latest single, “Dance in the Fire.” Marking her first release under Empire Distribution, the electrifying dance-pop track was produced in collaboration with two-time Grammy-nominated producer Luigie “LUGO” Gonzalez and 2024 Grammy-winning artist Will Gittens. Inspired by the recent Los Angeles fires, the song transcends its origins, delivering a universal call to embrace life’s challenges with strength and resilience. Kendra Erika explains, “Whatever the circumstances in the world may be, it’s always important to take the survivor route. This song is meant to ignite a fire within everyone— helping them regain their strength and fight beautifully through their own individual battles.”

Kendra Erika’s connection to the LGBTQ+ community runs deep. As a fierce advocate and performer at major Pride events, she embodies the same fearlessness and determination her audience holds dear. Erika notes, “There’s a mutual respect in that I’ve never bowed to industry constructs. I celebrate going against the grain, just as the LGBTQ+ community does. Passion, loyalty, and determination are qualities we recognize and celebrate in each other.” This bond is further strengthened by the song’s empowering message. “Dance in the Fire” champions the unyielding spirit of the LGBTQ+ community, inviting listeners to dance through life’s toughest challenges with courage and grace. The track’s pulsating beats and anthemic chorus evoke a primal call to action—an invitation to rise above adversity and thrive.

Collaborating with Luigie “LUGO” Gonzalez was a natural choice for Kendra Erika, as the two have worked together on multiple singles. “LUGO and I have worked together many times before, so it was like him saying, ‘Get in the car,’ and I just knew the destination would be incredible,” she says. Will Gittens, who won the 2024 Grammy for his work on Chris Brown’s “Tell Me Whooo,” brought a distinctive, tribal energy to the track. Erika reflects, “Will brought in that worldly element that was so necessary.” The song’s release is accompanied by a cinematic music video inspired by Game of Thrones, Dune, and One Million Years B.C. Set against a striking desert backdrop, the video blends fierce dynamics with breathtaking visuals, capturing the essence of the track’s intensity. Erika’s commanding presence and the video’s fiery aesthetics create a vivid depiction of strength and survival.

Her hit “Body Language” climbed to #2 on the iTunes Chart and #3 on the UK Music Week Pop Charts, earned heavy iHeartRadio rotation, and garnered over 2 million YouTube views, earning multiple features on MTV’s Spankin’ New. The Dublin Gay Theatre Festival is an annual event, celebrating contribution of gay people to theatre, past and present. The Festival was founded in 2004 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Oscar Wilde, in his native city. With an emphasis on new or recent international and Irish works with a broadly gay theme or relevance, the Festival has grown to become the largest event of its type in the world. www.gaytheatre.ie
