MODERNISM WEEK 2025 COVER
BY BOB BOGARD
Modernism Week takes place February 13-23, 2025, highlighting midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area of Southern California. The popular annual 11-day festival will feature more than 400 events including the Palm Springs Modernism Show, tours of iconic homes in more than 35 neighborhoods and communities, walking tours, and nightly parties. COVER MODERNISM WEEK HISTORY
In 2005, following the success of both the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale and the annual symposium organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Council, a group of local design and architecture aficionados created a committee to produce Modernism Week’s first event in February 2006 to showcase the world-renowned midcentury modern architecture of Palm Springs.
Among the members of the initial steering committee were representatives from the Modernism Show & Sale, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, the Palm Springs Modern Committee, the
and the
The first weekend included only a few hundred participants who attended five events including the symposium, a few lectures, and a reception. Each year the demand for additional programing increased and the founding partner organizations expanded their offerings. By 2009, programming was offered on two weekends. Eventually mid-week programming was introduced, and the event continued to grow progressively in scope and attendance until it reached its current schedule of 11 days and hundreds of events.

Can you please give us a little bit of “Modernism 101” to help those who are not that familiar with Modernism Week?
Modernism Week is the largest festival celebrating midcentury and modern architecture in the world. It started out as a collaborative, grass-roots community effort comprised of a few home tours, cocktail mixers and educational events that were planned to coincide with the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale (now called “Palm Springs Modernism Show”) occurring in Palm Springs each February since 2000. Now celebrating its 20th year, Modernism Week has grown into an internationally acclaimed annual event that spans 11 days. In 2024 more than 130,000 attendees participated in more than 400 events during the 11-day festival. We provide an opportunity for dozens of local Coachella Valley organizations and neighborhood groups to produce events that raise significant funds for their benefit from ticket sales for their events. We also produce a shorter version of the festival, called “Modernism Week – October,” which is offered annually each fall. Both events include home tours, talks, films, our signature double-decker bus architectural tours, vintage theme parties, and more.
When did you know that Modernism Week was something you wanted to be involved with?
I have been fortunate to be involved with Modernism Week since its inception, when I was working at the Palm Springs Art Museum, one of the five founding partners of Modernism Week. Growing up in the Coachella Valley, I had the opportunity to learn about the significant architects that worked in our area and saw the incredible homes they designed. Desert Modernism has always played a
significant role in my life, and I am honored that I have been able to be so intimately associated with the amazing and hardworking team that produces our festival each year.
How has the Modernism Movement influenced you personally?
As a Coachella Valley resident, I have seen first-hand how the principles of modernist architecture have shaped the growth and cultural identity of our area. I’ve been fortunate to tour many significant homes and buildings, and the ideals of modernism that I have personally experienced have significantly influenced my own design styles and taste.
Every year Modernism Week gets better and better. What can attendees of this year’s event anticipate?
Each year the festival offers original and compelling events, and this year we are pulling out all the stops in honor of our 20th anniversary. The Opening Night Party will be an over-the-top entertainment extravaganza featuring appearances by Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, and Elvis! Our Keynote speaker this year is Dr. Raymond Neutra, the youngest son of renowned architect Richard Neutra who will talk about preserving his father’s legacy. We have two amazing Featured Homes this year. The West House (previously owned by actor Adam West, best known for his role as Batman) was recently remodeled by Michelle Boudreau Design and features customized elevated details and revitalized modernist aesthetics with an innovative twist, all while paying tribute to Albert Frey’s signature architectural elements. The Sackley Chase Sensation is a stunning 70s residence designed by the prolific Palm Springs architect Stan Sackley and beautifully decorated by the iconic interior designer Steve
Chase. This remarkable home, recently updated by Grace Home Furnishings, features striking Brutalist features, including pristine Italian natural travertine floors and expansive walls of glass. Our Signature Home Tour features a stunning array of homes designed by significant architects that include some amazing houses previously offered on tours in addition to ones that have never been available to the public. I’m extremely excited about The Groovy 60s Party at the VIBE House. This one-of-a-kind time capsule residence will astound guests with its unique blend of eye-popping paisleys, plaids and vibrant colors, all immaculately preserved.
What is your personal favorite event during Modernism Week?
It’s difficult to select just one Modernism Week event from the more than 500 programs offered, but I always love the Vintage Trailer Show. This is one of the most celebrated and exciting events of the second weekend and this year’s show promises to be bigger and better than ever. It is a thoughtfully curated collection of vintage trailers, campers, buses and motor homes and is arguably one of the largest and most attended vintage trailer shows in the country. The trailer owners will be on hand Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23 to meet the public and discuss their trailer’s unique history and travels. I can’t wait to experience this great Modernism Week tradition.

“The fantastic Palm Springs Modernism Show is one of the reasons that Modernism Week exists,” said Lisa Vossler Smith, CEO of Modernism Week. “Twenty years ago, a group of local nonprofit organizations collaborated to offer architecture and design programing to compliment the Modernism Show. Our festival has continued to grow and expand in partnership with the Show. As Modernism Week celebrates our twentieth year, we are grateful to the Modernism Show for continuing to be the top US destination for midcentury modern aficionados to return and discover exciting new finds year after year.”
“We had another great opening night last year and overall, we did very well at the show,” said dealer Robert Sommers of Blue Heron Gallery. “For the third consecutive year a designer couple we work with brought back a very enthusiastic client to the show to make a substantial purchase. I have been doing modernism shows for more than twenty years and this show is the best.”
For the first time, the Palm Springs Modernism Show will feature a
fantastic display of four significant international dealers that will share one large booth under the title 4NDES and introduce their contemporary designs in the United States. Compelling contemporary art, sculpture, photography, and jewelry will all be intertwined in one large display. The dealers are Ignacio Gana of Miami and Chile (presenting paintings and sculpture), JMB Designer Ltd. of Milan, Italy (presenting jewelry that tells a story), Nacho Severin of Chile (presenting photography), and Manuel Santelices of New York and Chile (presenting fashion, society and pop culture illustrations). Their exhibition will be shown for the first time in the US during the show.
During the show, four Airstream Travel Trailers and Touring Coaches will be available for viewing compliments of Modernism Show Presenting Sponsor Airstream Inland Empire. These iconic trailers have been handbuilt in the United States since 1931. With an aluminum body and a modern interior, the Airstream travel trailer allows people to travel with all the comforts of home, and the Interstate built by Airstream and Mercedes Benz is described as the ultimate Touring coach.

BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED
BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Your alter-ego, the other half of your double life, is a superhero.
When you’re quiet, she’s boisterous. Your confidence is flat, hers soars. She’s a better dresser than you are, she’s more popular, and maybe even a little smarter. By day, you live a normal existence but by night, your other side roars and in the new mystery, “Murder in the Dressing Room” by Holly Stars, both of you solve crimes. Lady Lady had been a little off all evening.
As owner of London’s most fabulous, elegant drag club, she was usually in command but her protegee, Misty Devine, could tell that something was wrong.
She discovered how wrong when she found Lady Lady on her dressing room floor, foaming at the mouth, dead, poisoned by a mysterious box of chocolates.
Hours later, Misty de-dragged, morphing from an elegant woman to an ordinary, binary hotel employee named Joe who was heartbroken by the tragedy. Only employees had access to Lady Lady’s dressing room – ergo, someone they knew at the club had to be the killer!
Obviously, the London detectives assigned to the case had a suspect list, but Misty/Joe and their boyfriend Miles knew solving Lady Lady’s murder was really up to them. They knew who the killer wasn’t… but who it was, well, who had reason to kill Misty’s mentor?
Maybe Mandy, the club’s co-owner. The club’s bartender and bouncer were both sketchy. Lady Lady had spats with two employees and a former co-worker, but was that motive enough? When the dress Lady Lady was wearing that night proved to have been valuable stolen goods, Joe’s investigation list grew to include people who might have sneaked backstage when no one was paying attention, and a shady man who was suddenly following them around.
Then Misty learned that she was in Lady Lady’s will, and she figured the inheritance would be minor, but she got a huge surprise. Lady Lady’s posthumous gift could make others think that Misty might’ve had reason to kill her! And just like that, the suspect list gained another entry…
When you first get “Murder in the Dressing Room” in your hands, hang onto it tight. It’s fun, and so fluffy and light that it might float away if you’re not careful.
The story’s a little too long, as well, but there’s enjoyment to be had here, and authenticity enough to hold a reader’s attention. Author Holly Stars is a drag performer in London and somewhat of a murder maven there, which gives her insight into books of this genre and the ability to string readers along nicely with solid characters. If you’re unfamiliar with the world of drag you’ll also learn a thing or two while you’re sleuthing through the story; drag queens and kings will like the dual tale, and the settings that anchor it.
As a mystery, this is fun and different, exciting, but tame enough for any adult reader. If you love whodunits and you want something light, “Murder in the Dressing Room” is a double delight.

CeCe PENISTON HEADLINES
THE INTERNATIONAL BEAR CONVERGENCE 2025
BY GRANT DAVIS
In the early 1990s, CeCe Peniston achieved tremendous success, scoring five number one hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/ Club Play. Her signature song “Finally” reached the number 5 spot on the Hot 100 and number 2 in the UK Top 75, selling three million copies worldwide.
Peniston has performed at private engagements for Aretha Franklin’s private birthday party, Pope John Paul II in Rome at the Vatican (as a member of the gospel band Sisters of Glory) and the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, during both of his inauguration ceremonies in Washington, D.C. She was the first foreign female entertainer to perform in post-apartheid South Africa. According to Peniston, her vocal range vacillates between “five to seven octaves”.
In February 2011, Peniston signed a record deal with West Swagg Music Group/Bungalo Records, with full distribution through Universal Music Group Distribution, and announced release of a new solo album 15 years after her last studio set (I’m Movin’ On from 1996 on A&M Records). By the end of the year, however, only three digital singles had been issued including a new song called “Stoopid!”, and two cover versions of her prior hits, “Keep On Walkin’” and “Finally”. In December 2016, Billboard magazine listed her among the 100 Top Dance Club Artists of All Time.
Peniston topped the LGBTQ Urban Charts for ten weeks in 2021 after appearing on 2AM Ricky’s trendy track “Whatchu On“. Peniston took the young artist under her wing and became his mentor, making him the first Black Transgender male to land on any chart. The two have a long-lasting business relationship, with 2AM joining Peniston as a songwriter with numerous new records in the works. CeCe Peniston and 2AM work well together, constantly creating artistic achievements. Ricky has worked to raise awareness about the need of solidarity in the fight for Trans rights, mental health in music, and educating young musicians about the value of safeguarding their music and managing their music business properly.
Meanwhile, decades later, her critically acclaimed album, “Finally,” is currently navigating the music industry as Chris Brown performs her debut title track on his tour. Adele and Lady Gaga have both performed “Finally” on stage in recent years as well. Kelly Clarkson also kicked off her 2023 season with a live broadcast performance of “Finally”. We had a chance to have a little chat with Cece and following is a bit of what she had to say.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to us. Let’s get right to it.
When did you first realize you wanted to become a musical artist?
When I was 11 years old, I realized I wanted to be a star.
What or who are your biggest inspirations and why?
Some of my biggest inspirations is Patti LaBelle because her career has spanned over so many years, and she has one of the best voices in the music industry. I can remember coming into the business at 21 years old and meeting her for the first time. I remember fanning out (LOL) because I have always loved her.
Besides from dance, what are some of your favorite music genres?
Jazz, Reggae, Classical, Opera, R&B
What is your creative process when writing a new song?
I listen to the music, and I gather inspiration from what I hear and then I think of a topic that would be personal to me or someone else and I write about it.
What do you think are some of the biggest challenges in the music industry today?
The streaming platform is one of the biggest challenges to me because it doesn’t allow the Artist to really make a lot of money. I can remember when a single was 99 cents, and an album was $15, and you had to buy music which allowed the artist to make more money.
FEATURE
If you weren’t a musical artist, what would you be doing?
I would be a private investigator because I love researching everything.
Who would be your dream collaboration?
David Guetta
You have such a huge following in the LGBTQ community, why do you think that is?
Because I do music for the people, I am embraced by the community, and I think my music is relatable.
You’ve performed in Palm Springs before. What do you enjoy about audiences here and performing to live audiences in general?
I love the energy and the euphoria of being on stage in general. It’s always nice as an artist when people specifically come to see you and the Palm Springs audience never disappoints.
If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Hang in there, it only gets better because you know more of who you are as you continue to evolve.
What is next for CeCe Peniston?
New music, Tour in Australia and new shows all over the world.

NYE HIGHLIGHTS DAP HEALTH ALWAYS JUST PHILANTHROPIC, MUSICAL MATT
BY DANIEL VAILLANCOURT
For DAP Health Director of Development: individual giving and donor relations Matt Swearman, music is the throughline in a life spent helping nonprofits fulfill their mission.
“I was that kid who was always singing,” says DAP Health Director of Development: Individual Giving and Donor Relations Matt Swearman, 52. “Growing up, I would dance around the living room playing my mom’s Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, and Tammy Wynette country music albums on her Zenith console record player.”
This musical affinity would be a lasting throughline in Swearman’s life. Born in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and raised in nearby rural East Berlin, his family consisted of a homemaker mom, blue-collar laborer dad, younger sister, and maternal grandparents who ran a dairy farm “next door” (actually a quarter mile down the dirt road). By fourth grade, he was learning the recorder and played trombone throughout middle and high school. “As a kid, I wanted to be a teacher or a band director.”
A professional music career wasn’t quite in the cards, but teaching was. Having earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Penn State University, Swearman was recruited as a substitute teacher for the Gettysburg School District while working as a server at an upscale restaurant in Hanover. After a few years of moonlighting, he abandoned the classroom to scale the ladder up into restaurant management, eventually testing hospitality software for a firm in Baltimore, Maryland.
Life in the Nation’s Capital
It was after moving to Washington, D.C., in 2001 to live the next chapter of his life that Swearman not only began working in public affairs and advocacy for a boutique firm but was introduced via that position to fundraising (for clients like the National Park Foundation), and to the medical arena (thanks to his work with global pharmaceutical companies). These experiences hold Swearman in good stead at DAP Health. But there’s much more to his story before we get to that most recent chapter.
In Washington, Swearman also immersed himself back into music. One of his business mentors — who happened to be gay,
partnered, and the artistic director of all-volunteer, 60-member, LGBTQ band D.C.’s Different Drummers — asked if he played an instrument. So Swearman picked his trombone back up for the first time in almost a decade.
“I was struggling to find community in D.C.,” he says, adding that the band was instantly welcoming. He’d found his chosen family. “I eventually joined the board and became board president because I felt this organization had so much more to give and so much more it could accomplish. I brought to the table my public affairs, PR, and fundraising background. It was an opportunity to give back to a community that gave me so much. It built my confidence. I felt I’d found where I belonged. We loved making music together.”
One of Swearman’s first experiences making music with the band was learning and performing an original orchestral piece titled “Quilt Panels (for my love, for my grief, for my letting go)” by composer Robert Maggio. The troupe had raised the necessary funds to pay for the commission as an homage to the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and unveiled it alongside the Lesbian and Gay Chorus of Washington at the University of Maryland in 2003. “It was an immense auditorium, a spectacular venue,” recalls Swearman, tearing up at the distant memory. “We got this wonderful writeup in the Washington Post, which just gushed about how amazing it was. It was truly a gut-wrenching experience. It’s hard to play your instrument when you’re crying.”
By the time of President Barack Obama’s first inauguration in 2009, Swearman was there marching with D.C.’s Different Drummers as part of the Lesbian and Gay Bands of America (now known as the Pride Bands Alliance), the first openly queer band to ever perform at such a presidential event.
Love and Los Angeles
In 2012, Swearman met the man who would become his life partner. Fourteen years his senior, Bill lived in Los Angeles, where he worked as an insurance broker. “I actually had my eye on Northern California,” says Swearman with half a smile, adding that after a year of long-distance romance, he packed up for L.A. Since his boss
wouldn’t accept his resignation, Swearman was able to keep his D.C. job. Like Bill, he worked from home, enjoying regular trips to their second residence in Palm Springs.
The remote D.C. job simply couldn’t last. “I enjoyed it, but I longed for a more mission-driven environment,” says Swearman. “I wanted the work I do to feel critical, with lives sometimes literally on the line. I wanted to use my skills and talent in a way that was more meaningful for me. I had opportunities that not everyone has, and if I could help others access those opportunities, it could help them achieve their dreams and success on their terms.”
And so, he made the switch to L.A.’s Valley Village, a nonprofit that protects and advances the rights and interests of adults with developmental disabilities. “I did fundraising, marketing, event production, and internal and external communications,” Swearman says of the Renaissance man aspect of the post, in which he felt entirely fulfilled until the death of his father in 2024. “That was the linchpin for me to get out of L.A. I wanted to be closer to my mom, who lives in Beaumont.”
Palm Springs and DAP Health
With his heart set on working for an organization devoted to the arts, animals, or the LGBTQ+ community, Swearman was more than intrigued to find a position he felt he could be right for at DAP Health last July. Spoiler alert: He got the job.
NYE HIGHLIGHTS DAP HEALTH
“From the moment I walked in, I’ve felt like I belong here. That this is where I need to be,” he says. “In some ways it really reminds me of the band — that community that took care of one another. From the moment I stepped through DAP Health’s doors, I’ve felt so accepted here. Just like the first day I stepped into rehearsal in D.C. all those years ago. When you walk into a situation like that — after you’ve had other experiences not quite that good, that positive — sometimes you must stop yourself from thinking, ‘Is this real?’ Here, it’s very real.”
As for his fundraising duties, it’s again D.C.’s Different Drummers that pivotally taught Swearman the ropes. “It started with me having a keen interest in the band’s sustainability,” he says. “Some people hate asking for money. I have no qualms about it. I enjoy it and I’m good at it. It brings me joy to understand what motivates people to support, and to help them achieve their philanthropic goals. I’m very social. I’ve always been just Matt. It’s something Bill has said about me from the get-go: ‘One of the most refreshing things about you is you’re just unabashedly you!’”
Brushing up against his five-month mark, Swearman understands there are still hurdles to vault over and challenges to meet at DAP
Health. “I’m so excited by what it means for me to bring my skills and experience to elevate what we’re doing,” he says, looking toward major benefit gala The 31st Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in March 2025, and to Dining Out For Life this coming April, not to mention all the other events that are planned for this season. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s really great work.”

UNIQUE CELEBRATION OF GHANAIAN CULTURE AND MUSIC AT THE PS CULTURAL CENTER
On Saturday, March 1, 2025, the Supple Family Foundation will present a very special multimedia program and live musical performance at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. The program, entitled Jaku Mumor: Ancestral Spirit, is a unique celebration of Ghanaian culture and music. It is the latest project of Okaidja Afroso, the world-renowned multi-instrumentalist, Afro-Classical, Afro-Jazz, Ambient music, Singer-Songwriter and Traditional Dancer from Ghana, West Africa. It is based on his own experience as a child growing up in the fishing village of Kokrobite on Ghana’s west coast, and on the ancestral traditions of the indigenous Ga-Dangme fishermen who sing a capella as they fish along the shores of Ghana’s Atlantic Gulf of Guinea.
While developing Jaku Mumor: Ancestral Spirit, Okaidja returned to Ghana to dive deeper into his cultural roots by collaborating directly with the Ga-Dangme fishermen to share the full artistry of their a cappella singing and chants that awaken the spirit of the human soul. Footage of the visit, which is included in the show, includes singing, interviews, dance and drumming and combine seamlessly with Okaidja’s own distinctive music. Modern harmonies,
THE FRIENDS OF THE
updated lyrics and traditional dancing/drumming all serve to extend his ancestral traditions as they create a contemporary African oral tradition, combining percussion, guitar, dance, and native language vocals. His songs convey a whole spectrum of experiences – joy, harmony, tragedy and hope – that embrace the rich complexity of the integrated world we inhabit. Ghanaian musicians Janet Quaye and Emmanuel Tetteh join Okaidja in Jaku Mumor: Ancestral Spirit.
Now a resident of Portland, Oregon, Okaidja Afroso has been touring and performing West African dance, music and drumming for over twenty-five years in venues ranging from small fishing villages in Alaska and the Canadian Arctic to the Kennedy Center. He was originally invited to the United States by the late Worldbeat master Obo Addy to join his team of musicians and dancers to help promote West African culture to audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest. After many years with Obo Addy, touring and facilitating African drumming/dancing workshops, master classes, lecture demonstrations, school assemblies and onstage performances, Okaidja decided to branch out on his own to fulfill his creative ambitions. His sound is a spicy fusion of Ghanaian music with diverse cross-cultural influences. Although most of Okaidja’s hypnotic arrangements are sung in his native language, the meaning shines through. His calling and life purpose is to bring us all together so that we can laugh and grieve and dance and forge forward together, in community.

WHY LIBERAL DEMOCRATS MIGHT FIND MEXICO AN APPEALING ALTERNATIVE TO THE U.S.
BY WESLEY COLE
For liberal Democrats prioritizing equal rights, progressive social policies, and freedom from the influence of Christian Nationalism, Mexico presents a compelling alternative to life in the United States. While both nations have their unique strengths and challenges, Mexico’s recent advances in social justice and its secular governance provide a refreshing environment for those seeking alignment with their values.
A Robust Commitment to Secularism
One of Mexico’s defining features is its strict separation of church and state. The principle of laicidad, enshrined in the Mexican Constitution, ensures that religion remains separate from public policymaking. Clergy are prohibited from holding political office or participating in partisan politics, and religious instruction is banned in public schools. While the U.S. also has constitutional provisions for separation of church and state, Christian Nationalism has gained significant influence in American politics, shaping debates on issues like education, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ equality.
In contrast, Mexico’s secular framework creates a public sphere less influenced by religious ideologies. This is particularly appealing for individuals concerned about the growing presence of religious conservatism in U.S. policymaking.
Progressive Stances on Reproductive Rights and LGBTQ+ Equality
Mexico has made remarkable strides in advancing reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights. Abortion, for example, has been decriminalized nationwide following a landmark 2021 Supreme Court decision. While access can vary by state, the legal framework supports the right to choose, a sharp contrast to the rollback of abortion rights seen in some U.S. states since the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The country has also embraced LGBTQ+ rights, with samesex marriage recognized across all 32 states as of 2022. Antidiscrimination laws protect LGBTQ+ individuals in employment, education, and public spaces, and adoption by same-sex couples is increasingly common. These advancements illustrate Mexico’s
commitment to equality and inclusion, offering a welcoming environment for those who prioritize these values.
Affordable and Accessible Healthcare
Mexico’s healthcare system stands in stark contrast to the U.S., where healthcare access is often tied to employment and can be prohibitively expensive. Residents in Mexico have access to public healthcare options like IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) and INSABI (Health Institute for Well-Being), which provide affordable or free medical care. Private healthcare is also widely available and significantly cheaper than in the U.S., offering high-quality services for those who prefer expedited care.
For liberal Democrats who advocate for universal healthcare, Mexico’s system aligns closely with their vision. The affordability of prescription medications, routine medical visits, and specialized care ensures that healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
Strong Social Safety Nets and Community Values
Mexico’s government programs and cultural values reflect a focus on collective well-being. Initiatives like Bienestar and Prospera provide financial support to low-income families, incentivize education, and reduce inequality. These programs aim to uplift marginalized populations and create a more equitable society.
Additionally, Mexican culture emphasizes family and community support, serving as an informal safety net for individuals in times of need. This community-oriented ethos fosters a sense of belonging and mutual aid, contrasting with the individualistic culture prevalent in the U.S.
A Respite from Polarized Politics
While Mexican politics have their challenges, they are not as deeply entrenched in culture wars as those in the U.S. Issues like abortion and LGBTQ+ rights are often addressed through judicial rulings rather than being co-opted into divisive political campaigns. This approach reduces the ideological polarization that dominates American discourse.
For liberal Democrats weary of the political gridlock and culture wars in the U.S., Mexico offers a more pragmatic and less polarized political climate, where progressive policies can advance without being derailed by ideological battles.
Embracing Diversity and Inclusion
Mexico’s rich cultural heritage includes indigenous, AfroMexican, and mestizo traditions, contributing to a vibrant and diverse society. Efforts to preserve indigenous languages and cultural practices demonstrate a growing commitment to inclusivity. While challenges like racism and colorism persist, Mexican society is generally less polarized along racial lines than the U.S.
For those committed to multiculturalism, Mexico’s diversity and the government’s initiatives to address inequalities provide an encouraging environment for fostering inclusion and understanding.
Strict Gun Control Laws
Mexico’s approach to gun regulation offers a stark contrast to the U.S., where gun violence and debates over gun control are pervasive. Firearm ownership in Mexico is tightly regulated, with the only legal gun store operated by the military. While organized crime contributes to violence in certain regions, mass shootings and civilian gun violence are far less common.
For liberal Democrats advocating for stricter gun control, Mexico’s policies provide a sense of safety and reflect a commitment to public security.
Balancing Opportunities and Challenges
Living in Mexico does come with its challenges, including corruption, regional disparities in services, and security concerns in specific areas. However, many of these issues are localized and can be mitigated by choosing safe and well-developed regions, such as Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel de Allende, or Mexico City’s more affluent neighborhoods.
Moreover, the cost of living in Mexico is significantly lower than in the U.S., making it an attractive option for those seeking a high quality of life on a moderate budget. From affordable housing to fresh, locally sourced food, Mexico’s economic advantages complement its social and cultural appeal.
A Progressive Haven for Liberal Democrats
For liberal Democrats seeking an environment that aligns with their values, Mexico offers a unique blend of progressive policies, cultural inclusivity, and economic affordability. Its commitment to secularism, advancements in equality, and accessible healthcare create a society where collective well-being takes precedence over ideological divides.
While every nation has its complexities, Mexico’s recent strides in social justice and its focus on community-oriented governance provide a compelling alternative to the challenges faced by progressives in the U.S. For those considering a move, Mexico stands as a vibrant, diverse, and increasingly progressive option.
NYE HIGHLIGHTS Q&A SEX AND LOVE IN THE FLOATING CITY
BY SHANE GALLAGHER
Daniel Bateman shines in the lead role of Michael in the groundbreaking LGBTQ+ romance film Sex Love Venice, opening for a two-week run at Camelot Theater on February 14. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Steve Balderson, the film delves into the intricate tapestry of love and self-discovery, offering a refreshingly poignant narrative within the LGBTQ+ cinematic landscape. As Michael, Bateman portrays a man disillusioned by the transient connections of hookup culture. He yearns for a love that feels truly meaningful. His search leads him to the enchanting canals of Venice, where he encounters a magnetic and soulful local who challenges his deeply ingrained notions of intimacy. Marco, played by the hunky out actor Alexander Ananasso, believes in the transformative power of cultivating desire and leads Michael on a raw and vulnerable journey that invites audiences to reflect on their own definitions of love and connection. With its evocative storytelling, breathtaking Venetian backdrop, and powerful lead performances by Bateman and Ananasso, Sex Love Venice is a cinematic experience that transcends boundaries and celebrates the courage it takes to
embrace love in its most profound and transformative forms. Daniel Bateman explains more from his home in Los Angeles.
How did you prepare to embody the role of Michael?
Daniel Bateman:
I could relate with Michael. Like him, I have always been deeply in touch with my emotions. I have searched for meaning and purpose in my life and have felt the frustration of not knowing exactly how to navigate today’s hook-up culture.
Sex Love Venice emphasizes patience and intention in cultivating desire.
So many things are instant today. We can order food and access nearly anything we want at the touch of a button. Sex Love Venice shows how patience can be important in getting to know someone. We don’t have to learn everything instantly. It takes time to genuinely gather discovery. The reward can be a desire that we might not have known we were capable of.
Throughout the story, we witness Michael grow from someone who hides behind his insecurities to a man who is unabashedly vocal about them.
I wanted audiences to feel Michael gradually build up his sense of confidence and watch as he realizes that his insecurities and vulnerability are his strength.
Your on-screen dynamic with Alexander Ananasso as Marco is pivotal. How did you and Alexander build the connection required to bring this relationship to life?
I didn’t meet Alexander in person until we both were in Venice for the shoot. There is a lot of intimacy within this film, and it was so important to develop elements of that. We got along so very well and bonded through humor. A genuine respect and care for one another grew on set. When it would be cold or windy, he’d give me an extra jacket. I’d wipe his nose! We remain great friends today. We will always be connected from this journey. That’s the great thing about film; it is there forever.
What was it like filming in Venice?
This film brought me to Europe for the very first time! When I arrived, it was misty and rainy with a fog. As I slowly approached Venice on the water taxi, it was like stepping back in time into a magical world from a history book. There really is nowhere quite like it. There’s an energy and essence to Venice that almost doesn’t feel real. Everywhere you look is picturesque. I absorbed all of it and allowed myself to get lost in the enchantment.
The film draws from director Steve Balderson’s own memoir Year of the Whore.
Early on, I had conversations with Steve to discuss his personal experiences and his vision for the role. Steve is a great director who lets his actors play with the scenes to interpret the characters as they see fit. So, while I drew from certain aspects from Steve’s journey, I was able to make Michael my own.
What do you hope audiences take away from Michael’s journey and the film’s broader message about transcending judgment and finding love in unexpected places?
I hope they leave with the comfort in knowing that even though there is so much happening in the world right now, behind the chaos, there is beauty in connection. It’s important to feel more, to desire more, and to get out there and be yourself because we are all absolutely worthy of true love.
How do you see this film contributing to the landscape of LGBTQ+ cinema?
There’s a place for all kinds of storytelling, but I feel most films are often soft on romance or too sexually charged. Sex Love Venice celebrates the realness of both intense sexuality and tender romance.
Sex Love Venice opens at Camelot Theater (2300 E Baristo Rd) on February 14. Daniel Bateman will conduct a live Q&A on opening night as well as at the Saturday night and Sunday matinee opening weekend showings.

BY SHANE GALLAGHER
Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to ignite excitement in relationships and explore new possibilities for intimacy. For those venturing into the world of adult toys, Fort Troff founder Louis Ceruzzi suggests starting with beginner-friendly options that combine ease of use with enticing functionality. The Porta Plow is an excellent choice—a portable, durable sling that sets up in seconds and can be tucked away discreetly when not in use. It offers the thrill of a sling experience without requiring a permanent setup, making it ideal for newcomers. Another great option for beginners is stretchy cock rings, such as the Cush Ring, which delivers new sensations with comfort and simplicity. For those seeking something a bit more advanced, the Raw Grunt 3-pack provides a snug fit and an exciting next step.
Couples looking to bring more excitement to their relationships will discover a variety of innovative options are available this Valentin’s Day. One standout is the Rock Steady Bed Bondage Pro, a cleverly designed kit that transforms any bed into a bondage setup in moments. This system includes sturdy molded corners, adjustable bondage straps, and accessories like blackout blindfolds and nipple clamps, creating endless possibilities for exploration. For a high-tech addition to their intimate toolkit, couples might consider the Robo Rimmer, a plug and rim toy equipped with mechanical bead rollers and powerful dual motors. This advanced device features multiple settings and a remote control, delivering intense waves of pleasure for those ready to dive deeper into adventurous play.
For long-distance couples, technology offers creative ways to stay connected. App-controlled products such as the Throbber ring and Spring-Loaded plug allow partners to control vibrations and patterns remotely, bridging the physical gap between them. These interactive toys even sync to music playlists, making every moment together—whether virtual or in person—unforgettable. On the playful side, the Cumfort Cage, a soft-touch silicone chastity device, introduces an element of trust and fun without the rigidity of traditional designs. For couples eager to upgrade their playroom setups, standout options like Fort Troff’s St. Andrews Cross or Hammock Hangar tri-sling frame provide sleek, stable solutions that deliver unforgettable experiences.
Singles celebrating the holiday solo can embrace self-love and personal exploration. Ceruzzi recommends items like the Banshee Pump, a state-of-the-art suction device with an LED display and multiple power levels. For those seeking something lighthearted and unique, fetish-themed socks—tagged with playful identities like “TOP,” “BTM,” or “PUP”— are the perfect statement to let others
know what you are after this Valentine’s Day.
The convenience of online shopping has revolutionized how people purchase adult gifts, offering privacy, discretion, and accessibility. Fort Troff prioritizes discreet service by shipping all orders in unmarked packaging sealed with camouflage tape and 99 percent of orders are shipped on the same day they are placed, ensuring customers enjoy their toys without delay.
Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love, connection, and exploration in all its forms. Whether you’re surprising a partner with something adventurous, keeping the spark alive in a long-distance relationship, or treating yourself to an evening of self-love, there are countless ways to make the occasion unforgettable. Embrace creativity and curiosity so that the holiday becomes more than a celebration of romance. Make it an opportunity to deepen bonds, discover new possibilities, and celebrate the joys of intimacy.
