COMMENTARY YET ANOTHER MAJOR SET BACK
The White House issued guidance to the Pentagon to implement Trump’s transgender military ban. A purge of transgender service members in our military would be one of the worst setbacks for the LGBTQ community in decades. That is why I wanted to share with you the statement Equality California made in response to Trump’s most recent attack on our community. “This purge of heroic service members by a man who himself avoided military service is unfair, cruel and un-American. The proposed expulsions violate the very values that make us American, including equal opportunity and protection under the law and the ability of each of us to rise to the levels of our own talents. Trump has joined the ranks of Tayyip Recep Erdogan, Kim Jong-un and other modern autocrats who resort to purges and targeting of vulnerable communities to distract the public and to maintain their hold on power. He also has sent a clear message to LGBTQ people that his government does not consider our community to be worthy of equal treatment under the law but instead to be second-class citizens. The guidance issued by the White House, if implemented, would represent a significant step backwards in the movement for LGBTQ civil rights, which Equality California will fight with all its resources.

With this memo, Trump has attacked American heroes who have already risen above discrimination, hostility and lack of acceptance to serve our country by putting their lives on the line in its defense. The proposed denial of essential medical care for transgender service members is both cruel and unconstitutional. To the contrary of his stated justification, purging the military of highly skilled transgender service members would have a deleterious effect on military readiness and has been vocally opposed by dozens of current and former military officials.
The Standard Magazine is published monthly. Opinions
The expulsion of skilled, loyal troops itself damages effectiveness and unit cohesion and involves substantial costs in troop replacement and training and will harm military readiness. Preventing the enlistment of transgender people in the military bars them from opportunities to serve our country available to all other Americans and to improve their lives through careers in the military. This low appeal to hatred and un-American values, consistent with his defense of white supremacists and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, confirms that his chaotic presidency is propped up by a malignant ideology of hate, racism, religious intolerance and homo- and transphobia.”

COVER
2017-2018 HOT OFF THE RUNWAY BY CHRIS ASTRALA
From Seventies inspired athletic silhouettes to eclectic patterns and unexpected motifs, the runways came to life in a sea of invigorating men’s fashion trends. A wild animal print jacket here and a sleek velour tracksuit there; looks were political, whimsical, and oft times personal.
SHADES OF GRAY
PREP SCHOOL VARSITY
SHADES OF GRAY Designers showed an affinity for monochromatic gray on gray looks both in suiting and accessories. LEOPARD PRINT While animal print is traditionally considered to be feminine, designers made the trend fresh and masculine utilizing a toned down motif to construct outerwear and accessories. PREP SCHOOL VARSITY Collegiate style staples like striped sweaters and print pants were paired together with worn in feeling accessories creating a look that is surprisingly cool without feeling nerdy.

ROCK & ROLL MILITARY
LEATHER ON LEATHER
PEACOCKING In Fashion, peacocking is a term used to define the bravest style attention seekers of them all. Designers cleverly toyed with the idea offering unusual, stand out prints and motifs including the look of actual peacock feathers. URBAN RODEO Rugged sensibility meets modern style in this clash of country meets city trends. A mix of high-end pieces with relaxed details creates the vibe. ROCK & ROLL MILITARY How do you wear your uniform? This Seasons fashionable male wears his with a colorful striped fur jacket. Designers blended military feeling prints and design with daring statement pieces.
LEATHER ON LEATHER Leather is a classic men’s accent. However, when paired alongside even more leather it instantly becomes a new modern trend. Designers paired traditional items like leather jackets with unconventional pieces like leather tops and pants. NEW SCHOOL GOTH Goth is a trend that just keeps being reinterpreted. For FW1718, the Goth kids are all about toned down street style. Goth classics like black boots and slouchy trousers are paired with graphic shirting in a palette of mostly black. POLITICAL STREET STYLE While the world is talking politics, these trendsetters will be wearing it. Designers cleverly and wittingly delivered cryptic political and socially charged messages through various designs and motifs. THE “SPORTS” SUIT This year’s suit is for the man who doesn’t actually like suit. Super relaxed, comfortable and incredibly hip feeling, this certainly isn’t your dad’s suiting. Designers offered sleek tailored suiting in athletic feeling fabric choices like jersey and soft knits. THE “SPORTS” SUIT
SIGNATURE TROUSERS When it comes to pants men usually have a few options: jeans, trousers, or khakis. Designers offered a few more daring statements to this year’s wardrobe with a collection of modern, Rock-and-Roll inspired trousers with sleek details. BEST MEN’S POLO SHIRTS TO GO FROM WORK TO THE WEEKEND We have to admit, we still totally dig sporting a polo shirt in the summer. But, we’re still a little scarred by the memory of this basically being our uniform growing up. Fear not, the polo has changed since you were little. First off, not all the sleeves are so tight they make you look like The Fonz when he would vacation in the summer. Second, they come in a variety of fabrics, styles and fits that work with whatever your current body status is. THE 5 BEST JEANS FOR MEN We’re throwing the “rule book” out the window that claims you can only wear light colored jeans in the spring and summer. We weren’t great following rules anyway. But, since we’re craving all things ‘fall’, light-to-dark washed denim looks great if you’re heading to the office or out on that date you’ve been nervously waiting to go on. And sometimes an event requires something darker. We’ve got you covered there too. The only rule we do try to follow is that your jeans should fit…and fit well. There is really nothing more fabulous than gay fashion, and the fashion/clothing industry would be literally nothing without the involvement of the LGBT community. From Alexander McQueen to Alexander Wang, and Karl Lagerfeld to Gianni Versace. Let’s face it. The LGBTQ community IS the fashion community. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s look to some incredible queer talents who are really making a name for themselves in an extremely competitive industry. “These names represent fashion’s next generation at large being not only diverse in their own sort of statistical make up, but also diverse in the markets they serve,” says Mikelle Street, fashion maven. GOGO GRAHAM Cited as creating the first clothing line designed exclusively for trans women, Gogo Graham is a trailblazer. “I was making all this stuff that looked cool, but I was like, ‘I can’t wear this, this doesn’t make any sense,’” Graham told W Magazine earlier this year. “That’s when I was like, I need to do this, because it’s really important and really hard for a lot of these girls to find stuff to wear.” GYPSY SPORT Gypsy Sport has been at the forefront of the genderless clothing movement, and founder Rio Uribe is behind it all. DEX SERVES INTERNASH-IONAL FIERCENESS BY MIKE BAHR
DEX Experience aka DEX is serving fierceness worldwide with the release of “Internash,” the first single from his upcoming album. Combining catchy lyrics with bitchy base, the empowering, feel good, party track has a 90’s sound set against a sassy, modern day kick. Written and produced by DEX and DJ/Producer Omri Anghel, the song is about embracing the world as your playground. It draws inspiration from the pre-millennium supermodels who mesmerized, amused and enthralled every time they walked the runways and graced the covers of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar magazines. “I long for the return of the 90’s supermodel,” muses DEX. “When gorgeous ladies like Naomi Campbell would be in Italy with Mario Testino shooting a Valentino campaign in the morning, then whisked off by helicopter to slay the catwalk for a Chanel Couture show in Paris and the next day, they’re celebrating with friends on a yacht off the coast of the Maldives. The supermodels were here, there, everywhere: they were Internash!” he laughs. “Internash” by DEX Experience is being distributed by Ditto Music, and is available on iTunes. “Unfortunately the era of the supermodel will never happen again,” DEX continues, lamenting how reality stars and actors dominate the covers of today’s fashion magazines. “Few of today’s so-called covergirls have the glamour, the grace, the power of Naomi, Christy, Cindy and Linda Evangelista.” But that doesn’t mean the world has to lose its “Internash”. DEX says its up to the people to take the power. Each of us must realize our true life’s potentials and shine bright like the diamonds of the 90’s supermodel. He points to how he and many of his friends live the “Internash” lifestyle. “When writing the song, I had my long-time friend Joseph Turla in mind. Twenty years ago, we were young kids in New York, jet setting around the world, performing opening acts for artists such as Whitney Houston, Madonna, Grace Jones, Cher, Bette Midler, Jennifer Lopez, and Beyonce, to name a few. As well, hosting at fashion parties for major designers such as Versace, Dolce & Gabanna, and Marc Jacobs. Today, I own my makeup line and Joseph is a celebrity fashion stylist for clients like Justin Timberlake and Joan Jett. We often find ourselves at shoots on opposite sides of the globe. I might be in Tel Aviv planning the next season’s campaign, while he’s in Sweden, styling Justin. We’re not fashion models, but we live like the world is meant to be explored. We serve it, turn it out, then walk and that is Internash.” DEX was born in Trinidad & Tobago. At 5, he moved to New York City with his parents. They steered him in the direction of dance and musical theatre, enrolling him at La Guardia
12 THESTANDARDPS.COM
High School for the Performing Arts (the school made famous by the TV show, “Fame”). There, he majored in classical ballet. After graduation, he attended Marymount Manhattan College, majoring in musical theatre. Young, sexy, and with an infectious personality, DEX found his way into the NYC underground nightlife, carrying on with the likes of Amanda Lepore, Candis Cayne and Laverne Cox. Nightlife would help to clear his path towards fashion and beauty. “There is no place like the NYC nightlife when it comes to networking with top professionals that lead to real jobs and opportunities,” he says. DEX is the founder of DEX New York, a healthy makeup line formulated with good-foryour-skin ingredients, high performance standards, photographic qualities, and an extensive skin tone shade range for women from Sweden to Sudan. “I strive for women of all colors, around the globe, to discover their true beauty from within and look flawless, naturally!” This year, DEX New York celebrates its ten-year anniversary, a major milestone for any young company. In that time, DEX New York has set the standard for the makeup, no make-up look and helped launch an entirely new beauty industry category: makeup with skincare benefits. “The success of the company has taught me to believe in myself; to never dim my light for anyone. We are all so much more powerful than we believe ourselves to be. We all must realize that there are no limits. That’s the real message of Internash.” He views the song as both a throwback to and an evolution from RuPaul’s famous song about the runway “Supermodel (You better Work)”. “For some, Internash will re-light the fire of fierceness we first felt when Ru commanded us to work. For millennials and Generation Z who have only heard about those days and never got to experience them, Internash will be their chance to snap their fingers on the dance floor, bitch-face each other and just laugh up a storm to the beat of a liberating party anthem.” “Internash” by DEX Experience is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and most online retailers and streaming sites. RAPPER CAZWELL AIMS TO MAKE AMERICA FEMME AGAIN Cazwell’s “Loose Wrists,” the first single off his new music label Snow Cone, is old-school hip-hop with a beat that is purposely simple and bass driven. “I moved to Los Angeles a year ago and I wanted to make a song that people could drop their convertible tops down to and head bang along with,” explains the artist. Along with the track, Cazwell is releasing a highly anticipated music video that already stirred a social media frenzy online when Cazwell posted a photo from the set to Instagram. It featured the rapper and his male dancers in pastel colored lace shorts by designer Hoza Rodriguez of Hologram City. “I was surprised by the reaction because the outfits are way more conservative than the shirtless guys in Speedo’s and jockstraps I typically have in my videos,” he says. “I noticed a real femme pride movement brewing on social media a few years ago,” continues Cazwell, discussing the inspiration for the song. “I love that it is so visible right now. It’s about time we all embrace femme. Whether we are gay or straight, when men get in touch with their feminine sides, it gives a real sense of empowerment.” He says it’s especially important now because “we have a President that wants to take us off of the census and a Vice President that believes shock therapy will cure gayness. At the end of last year, I vowed to be as gay as possible with my music and videos. We have to be more visible than ever and I hope I inspire that.” That’s why Cazwell will be wearing the lace shorts featured in the “Loose Wrists” music video, directed by Big Dipper, out in public. “Hell yeah, I’m going to wear them! You’ll probably find me at the corner deli at four in the morning wearing a pair with a matching speedo underneath. “ He won’t be the only one either. Since the shorts have appeared on PopSugar, Huffington Post, Teen Vogue, Maxim and Allure, many men — and not all gay — have reached out to the Hologram City designer to purchase a pair of their own. “Hoza has even been contacted by girls buying shorts for their boyfriends. I’m
not surprised. I could see Pharrell sporting lace on The Voice.” The irony is that the shorts were initially intended to be jogging suits. Cazwell says, “I wanted five pastel velour jogging suits for the video but we couldn’t get them to look the way we wanted. I was really stressed out about it so I took a nap and when I woke up, I called Hoza up and said, ‘Lace. Let’s just use lace and have the guys in white briefs.’” It turns out lace is much easier to work with than velour. Hoza was able to whip up the outfits quickly. Cazwell’s career started in downtown New York. He has been described as ‘what would have happened if Eminem had grown up on Madonna’s front lawn.’ He has over 10 million You Tube / VEVO views for such tentpole videos as ‘Ice Cream Truck,’ “I Seen Beyoncé Ay Burger King,’ ‘Get My Money Back,’ ‘No Selfie Control’ and “Rice & Beans’. He has amassed over 1 million digital streams and downloads and has earned hipster credibility with a steady flow of danceable hip hop tracks that impressively showcase his hypomanic take on pop culture. Cazwell’s last full-length album, “Hard 2 B Fresh”, was released in 2015 on the Brooklyn indie label, Peace Bisquit. It featured seventeen tracks and 12 music videos including “Helen Keller,” “Dance Like You Got Good Credit,” “Downtown,” “The Biscuit” and “Don’t Get It Twisted.” The week of release, the album went top 5 on the iTunes album chart. Hard 2 B Fresh is recently available as a limited edition double disc CD/DVD containing the full album, “Hot Homo”, all the music videos and exclusive remixes. Lacey Shorts are not Cazwell’s first foray in fashion. Last year he debuted his ‘Ice Cream Truck’ underwear with design collaborator Geoffrey Mac. The collection sold out entirely in it’s first month. Cazwell’s “Loose Wrists” is available on iTunes now. For more information, visit Cazwell.com and PeaceBisquit.com.

INDESIGN FASHION & STYLE, @HOME BY DANN FOLEY
This month we, as a magazine, explore Fashion & Style. As your resident, “living well” guru I am excited to discuss with you the cross-roads of fashion, style and home. These worlds of style are intertwined. The influences of color, pattern and design you see coming down the runways of fashion houses make their way into your home, albeit at a slower pace. Color, pattern and design style are cyclical. You’ve heard the expression, “everything old is new again”. The modern influence in style on the runways, helped lead the resurgence of mid-century modern design in home. The predominant color palettes in fashion today are the fresh new colors in home design 18 months from now. Though fashion and trend change quickly, home fashions tend to stick around longer and have a longer shelf life. The cost of a new blouse is easier to accept when considered against the price of a new sofa. Even a fashion piece today can be an investment but most often that investment is considered along side longevity. As an interior designer and a home product designer, I watch fashion for clues as to what the next great trend in home might be. I am not only watching color, I am also watching pattern, shape, proportion and details. In fact, I can say that I use the runway in developing my mood boards and projections for my own lines of products. When I begin the process of designing a collection such as bedding, I have to consider my influences (just like a fashion designer). I think
16 THESTANDARDPS.COM
about what I like, what makes me happy and how I turn those feelings into product (just like a fashion designer). I begin telling a story of who my consumer might be (just like a fashion designer). Truth be told, all creative work is done in a similar manner. You can use these same techniques to help you find your own style at home and in every way you live. When I begin a new project with a client, I want to help them to discover their own personal style. One of the first places I take them on their journey of self-discovery is their own closet. There are many clues to be found in what you purchase to wear on a daily basis. A closet full of black suggests to me that my client will prefer subdued choices, solids and minimal pattern. Contrast is key to keeping this style from becoming heavy or overwhelming. Just as in a wardrobe predominantly made up of black, it is my job to ensure the client is still chic, modern and comfortable. Some of my favorite neutrals to mix with black are ivory, camel/taupe and grey. On the opposite side of the spectrum, just about any color in the spectrum works as fantastic pop of style. On the other hand, when I find a closet that is full of color and pattern, I am usually working with someone who has a strong personality and one who enjoys making a statement. A person who’s fashion choices run to the more daring side of color and pattern is usually a client who is interested in more of the same in their home space as well. For this person I love to layer pattern and texture along with color.
The trick to layering patterns successfully is to blend, not only different styles of patterns but different scales as well. You can even layer the same pattern over each other as long as you change the scale, this works especially well with stripes and plaids. As always, what I am trying to say is, relax, have fun, explore what makes you happy in your home just as you do in your fashion choices. Try new styles, new shapes, new proportions. Your home should be as personal as your wardrobe. Remember, this isn’t brain surgery, its
decorating and as a creative process you should feel your way through it. Nothing is written in stone and there are no hard and steadfast rules you cannot break. Enjoy the process! Live Well. www.danninc.com Find us by searching Designer Dann on: Facebook / Twitter / Youtube / Pinterest Houzz

QUEER FASHION IS WAY MORE THAN JUST A TREND
From countless articles mapping the rise of androgynous models to the influx of highly visible gender-neutral clothing to celebrities challenging gender-based expectations through fashion, the queering of the fashion industry is a phenomenon that parallels the rapid acceptance of the LGBT community by mainstream society. Some have argued that this shift in fashion is appropriative or commodifying of the LGBT community, while others have celebrated it, deeming it a sign of progress. But the question remains: what happens to fashion brands that proudly call themselves queer? That is, brands that go beyond the fashion industry’s recent fascination with androgynous gender presentation and create both clothing and space for a multitude of identities across the spectrum of sexual preference and gender identity. dapperQ is one fashion brand and blog that describes itself as queer and is attempting to start a conversation amongst queer fashion designers. “I protested fashion until I realized it was my greatest tool,” Deeba Zivari, the brand ambassador for dapperQ told The Huffington Post. To dapperQ conventional fashion brands and magazines, which have capitalized on the trend of “queering fashion,” don’t accurately reflect the full spectrum of queer experience. “Queer style is not a trend. It is an intrinsic part of our culture and identities and deserves on-going space at the fashion table,” dapperQ Owner and Executive Producer Anita Dolce Vita told The Huffington Post. “If gender fluidity is marketed as a legitimate way of existing and not
18 THESTANDARDPS.COM
just as a disposable trend, I support the mainstream industry advancing equality in fashion, so long as the original creators and thought leaders are properly credited and compensated.” Dolce Vita sees radical potential in the fashion world to not only fight for and preserve notions of self-expression within the LGBT community, but also contribute to the ongoing fight for social justice. “Queer style is one of the most fashionable forms of resistance and is a powerful tool in our fight for liberation,” Dolce Vita added. Zivari echoed these sentiments when it came to her own personal journey with style and her queer identity. “It was the exercise of style that gave me the gift of using material other than words to communicate my inside-outside world,” she said. “The confidence to stand for myself, the access to community, the feeling of home, the integrity to tell the truth, and welcome the truth.” Dolce Vita said that one of the foundational goals of dapperQ and its annual shows is to recognize the importance of maintaining agency over the aesthetics and ideas that the LGBT community pioneered. “These mediums and communities are reshaping conversations around gender, size, race, ethnicity, ableism, and more,” said Dolce Vita. “The mainstream fashion industry is taking note of how powerful and influential these communities are, but it is really important that the queer community play a prominent role in presenting and discussing our ideas. Fashion is political and style is not just a trend.”

FASHION BITS BY CHRIS ASTRALA A FLAG IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS As part of last year’s popular EuroPride celebration in Amsterdam, transgender model Valentijn De Hingh made a huge fashion statement by donning a long, flowing gown that was comprised solely of the 72 flags of countries where homosexuality is still illegal. Mattijs van Bergen and Oeri van Woezik co-created this dress made of 72 flags, representing the 72 countries where homosexuality is still outlawed.” Although the dress is despairing in nature, especially considering that 72 anti-LGBT countries is still A LOT, De Hingh expressed some hope, stating that whenever one of the countries on the dress passes legislation that advances equality for queer people, their flag on the dress will be replaced with a rainbow flag. “Every country that changes its legislation will have its flag replaced by a rainbow flag,” she said. “Let’s hope this dress will represent a patchwork of rainbows sooner rather than later!” We can’t wait to see what kind of head-turning statement Valentijn makes during this year’s round of Pride festivities! If it is anything like this dress, it’s sure to get people thinking.

PERSPECTIVE
DESTINATION STYLE & FASHION BY JIM MURPHY
As I began to prepare to write this month’s article with the theme being “style and fashion,” I was stymied as to what to write about. Do I write about clothing and fashion? How about style and architecture? What about style and lifestyle? Certainly, Palm Springs has all of these elements. It was perplexing to me how I was going to pinpoint one single concept of “style and fashion.” Besides, what do I know about style and fashion being a structural engineer (boring!) with advanced degrees in architecture and business while making a living as an entrepreneur? So I decided to broaden my horizons in an attempt to answer the question, “Is Palm Springs really a fashionable and stylish destination?” I began my search for an answer the “good old fashioned” way, by looking up the definitions of the words, fashion and style. I also began by looking at other cities abroad that are renowned for their “fashionable and stylish” reputations. Style: a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed. Fashion: the make or form of something. (OK! So that was not much help! Next?) I don’t think that anyone would argue that a city like Paris, France epitomizes fashion, style and chic. Come on now, this is a city that has produced haute couture, art nouveau, new wave cinema and avantgarde works that are experimental, radical, and unorthodox when it comes to art, culture and society. And it continues to innovate and redefine fashion and style almost on a daily basis. Only in a place like Paris can a little known label become an in-demand brand overnight. Then there is a city like Barcelona, Spain. Unlike Paris, Barcelona is better known for its architecture rather than fashion, particularly the work of Antoni Gaudí, whose wild-looking, intricate buildings and gardens remain a fascination to every tourist visiting this city. Think of La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell Gardens as great examples of Gaudí’s work. What about cities closer to home such as San Francisco and Los
20 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Angeles? Where do they rate on the fashion and style meter? The San Francisco Bay Area is home of Silicon Valley and to dozens of important industrial design firms, including IDEO, Apple and Google. These designers and creators are the makers of revolutionary industrial technology and products that people around the world use and admire (?) on a daily basis. Try to go a day without you’re Apple iPhone or Apple watch and not experience some sort of separation-anxiety. The innovation and style created in Silicon Valley has become entrenched in all of our collective lives and societies. Does this fall within the purview of fashion and style as we normally think of it? And then there is Los Angeles! LA might be thought to only consist of spray-tanned celebrities, fake blondes and wanna-beactors, but the city is also steeped in a rich history of architectural and fashionable traditions. For example, there is a particularly ample inventory of the mid-century homes by Neutra, Schindler and Wexler, peppered throughout neighborhoods Los Feliz and Silver Lake. So does LA fall within the purview of what would be considered a fashionable and stylish city as we normally think of it? What I am beginning to sense from my limited and unscientific research for this short article is that fashion and style are not only about the clothes we wear; rather, fashion and style encompasses much more about where we live, how we live, and what we do to entertain ourselves in a fashionable and stylish manner. So I go back to my original question: “Is Palm Springs really a fashionable and stylish destination?” There is a saying in economics that states, “What’s bad for the one aspect of economy is good for other aspects of the economy” – and in this case, Palm Springs, fashion and style are no exceptions. Palm Springs was just a sleepy desert town whose roots were established by the Agua Caliente Indians, Hollywood jetsetters and the mid-century modern architects. However, since the crippling recession of ’08 new life has been breathed into all the older homes left unloved and in disrepair, but that had great bones. And now, hip and cool younger people are flocking to Palm Springs to thoughtfully buy, stylishly renovate and energetically infuse new life into this sun-baked destination. New businesses have followed this youthful trend and Palm Springs has become a globally recognized vacation destination. Once again, Palm Springs has that Parisian swagger of,
NEED FOOD? “je ne sais quoi.” As Ana Kamin writes in her recent 7X7 article, “With poolside glamour, mid-century modern architecture, vintage shops, tennis at dusk, seriously delicious eateries, an old-timer here and there, hot desert days and even hotter desert nights, what’s not to love about Palm Springs?” Further, “toss in a pinch of Old Hollywood glamour and new hipster cool, and Palm Springs is a spot-on destination for a chill long weekend, just an hour flight from San Francisco.” So now I go back to my original question and my response is a resounding, “YES!” Palm Springs really is a fashionable and stylish destination?” (Actually, I knew that all along !) BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER How does that work? When you were little and that question arose, you simply took things apart – but that didn’t always work so well. In “‘You’re in the Wrong Bathroom!’” by Laura Erickson-Schroth, MD and Laura A. Jacobs, LCSW-R, it’s time for different way of seeing things. One million people. That’s approximately how many transgender individuals live in the U.S. “Chances are,” say the authors, “you’ve met one (or more) of them,” and you didn’t even realize it. So why do many people think they don’t know anyone who’s transgender? The answer goes back to a 1960s-era estimate that didn’t take race or economics into account, and that may still lead to myths and wrong assumptions. Misunderstandings happen because of that old study, lines blur, and “It’s crucial to ask ourselves why it bothers us so much…” It’s a myth to believe that any single thing can define a “trans” person, say the authors. Each individual decides on who he or she are or will be, what he or she’ll be called, whether to have surgery, and how he or she’ll dress. And no, you cannot ask what’s in their pants, but you can respectfully inquire about preferred pronouns. The sexuality of a transgender individual may be complex, say the authors, or it may be a fluid process filled with surprises, but transitioning isn’t a way to “trick” anyone into anything. Disclosure to friends, family, and potential mates is likewise not easily defined, so it’s best left to the individual. Obviously, none of this is “easy.” Trans people have been around for centuries and were once revered in various cultures throughout history. They are not “broken” or “trapped in the wrong body” and they do not need to be “fixed.” They’ve gone through many steps to transition, and the vast majority will not have regrets for it. And using “safety” as an argument for denying them bathroom usage is incorrect – unless you’re talking “safety” for the trans individual zierself. Questions. You’ve got a zillion of them and, especially if you’re transitioning or thinking about it, so do your friends and family. “’You’re in the Wrong Bathroom!’” can answer twenty of them. Beginning at the basics with “Identity,” authors Laura EricksonSchroth and Laura A. Jacobs take the most common lore about the “T” in LGBT and gently correct any wrong beliefs that may be lurking in readers’ minds. That’s a good start, but there were times when the authors seemed too nice; more adamant language could have been appropriate. Even so, there’s a good sense of mind easing in most cases here, followed by a carefully measured MYOB tone. At some
point, then, and no pun intended, this book transitions more toward gender-nonconforming readers and less for cisgender folks, allowing the latter even better insight. There’s a lot of education as well as food for thought inside this book, for those who’ve transitioned as well as those who are pondering it and for their loved ones. If you need something to help set the naysayers right, “’You’re in the Wrong Bathroom!’” will work. “’You’re in the Wrong Bathroom!’ And 20 Other Myths and Misconceptions About Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming People” by Laura Erickson-Schroth, MD and Laura A. RICKY REBEL RELEASES ‘PERFECT TEN’ BY JEFF DORTA
In “If You Were My Baby,” Ricky Rebel sings about how selfconfidence is an aphrodisiac and one should never be afraid to ask for what he or she wants from life. Rebel wanted a wide selection of different interpretations of “If You Were My Baby” — the first single from his upcoming album, The New Alpha — that would play on any dance floor worldwide, and he got them. This week, the glam rocker releases a perfect ten package of new remixes from some of the biggest DJ/producers on the planet, including Hector Fonseca, Tommie Sunshine and Mr. Mig. He is also releasing the song’s music video, directed by Daniel Wu and produced by Rare Candy. “I want to sprinkle confidence into every club in the world,” says Ricky Rebel from his home in Los Angeles. “Confidence is an asset. It shows leadership and draws people in. I truly believe it is the most attractive quality a person can possess and might just help you land that special person you thought was out of reach.” The remixes of Ricky Rebel’s “If You Were My Baby” release September 7 from Audio4Play, along with the song’s music video. Fans will notice Rebel relies on his vocal chops a lot more on the track than he has previously. “I think I had something to prove,” he admits. “Sam Harmonix works alongside Grammy award-winning producers and artists! I wanted to impress him with my harmonies and vocal range. You know, prove there’s real talent behind the fierceness.” The “If You Were My Baby” remixes offer a wide array of different sounds. “Godfather of EDM” Tommie Sunshine gives the track a fun, modern twist that crosses between EDM and club in his mix, while Zambianco presents a cool tribal beat that fitness buffs will enjoy working out to. Hector Fonseca’s version is straight up club with a Brazilian vibe that sounds tailor-made for the world’s biggest Pride festivals. The Dirty Werk mix is a pop dance hybrid best suited for straight dance floors, while the SaberZ mix is hard core EDM, perfect for large stadiums. DJ Hayworth’s track, with it’s lovely tropical deep house vibe, is the most unique of the remixes while KOIL and Vito Fun’s mix has an urban club vibe that fans of Beyoncé will enjoy. Mr. Mig’s pop remix is probably the closest to Rebel’s original track. Ricky Rebel burst on the music scene in 1997 as the lead vocalist of the boy-band No Authority. Signed by Michael Jackson to Michael’s MJJ Music label at Sony, he toured with 98 Degrees, Destiny’s Child,
Aaron Carter, and Ashlee and Jessica Simpson. In 2000, the band moved to Madonna’s Maverick label where they toured with Britney Spears and released their Billboard Top 40 chart hit, “Can I Get Your Number,” produced by the same Mr. Mig featured on the “If You Were My Baby” remix package. Another No Authority song, “I’m Telling You This,” appeared on the Rugrats in Paris soundtrack. Ricky went solo as Ricky Rebel in 2012. Since then, he has released two albums, Manipulator featuring hit singles “Geisha Dance,” “Get It On” and “You Need a Woman” and The Blue Album featuring “Star” and “Boys and Sometimes Girls”. In “Star,” Rebel inspired fans to be the celebrities of their own lives. In “Boys and Sometimes Girls,” he delivered a personal proclamation about his interest in both sexes. “‘If You Were My Baby’ has its own important message,” says Rebel. “It is about self-assurance, selflove, and to all my Rebel Mafia out there, I say: if you like someone, tell them and make a case as to why you are the best. You might be surprised with the results.” Visit www.rickyrebelrocks.com.

NAKED ARTISTS & FRIENDS WEEKEND INNdulge, a leading gay resort in Palm Springs, is inviting men to get in touch with their bodies and spirits this fall at Naked Artists & Friends Weekend, three fun days of uninhibited camaraderie under the hot desert sun; beginning Friday, Sept 29 and continues through Sunday, Oct 1. NY artist Shungaboy will lead the festivities that include Naked Figure Drawing, a Naked Hike in the desert, Naked Yoga and relaxation by the pool. “All activities are optional, so men can enjoy the weekend at their own pace,” says Shungaboy. “It will also be a judgment-free weekend, meaning weight, fitness level, penis size and drawing skills don’t matter!” “As we navigate through our busy lives in these tech-driven times, it is important for men to be in touch with their bodies and spirits,” explains Shungaboy from his home in New York. “A deeper understanding of ourselves enables men to steer through the distractions and obstacles of life and work toward achieving our dreams and goals.” “Being naked also peels away the outer layer most of us use to deceive ourselves and it encourages us to love who we truly are,” he adds. The weekend’s signature activity is Naked Figure Drawing, a process that requires mental concentration. Artists need to be able to focus on the naked model and translate his figure into pencil lines on a piece of paper. The drawing itself isn’t the important thing; it’s the internal journey of the artist. Still, with time and practice, drawing skills do improve and Shungaboy is there to provide one-on-one drawing instruction to anyone seeking guidance. Sketchpads and pencils are provided, though guests may bring their own art materials. Unlike traditional drawing groups, where the model is naked and the artists are clothed, everyone is naked at Naked Artists & Friends Weekend. It encourages a camaraderie not found in traditional groups. Additionally, as there is no hired model; guests take turns posing for each other. Anyone interested in posing is encouraged to give it a try. “It’s empowering and a lot of fun!” says Shungaboy. The Naked Hike allows men to commune with nature in the vast California desert. “It’s liberating to feel the breeze on your

skin while trekking through the dramatic desert landscape with its immense flora and rocks,” says Shungaboy. Local members of the Naked Hiking in Palm Springs hiking club will lead the morning expedition. Of course, sun block, good walking shoes, a hat, and plenty of water are musts. For those who want to venture on their own, away from the group, that’s ok too. There’s plenty to do in Palm Springs: from the springs to the golf courses and spas, to hiking along the numerous hidden trails in the Coachella Valley. There are also tons of gay bars, restaurants and nightclubs and the shopping cannot be beat, with major retailers in Downtown Palm Springs and on El Paseo Drive in Palm Desert. Shungaboy started Naked Artists & Friends as an alternative to traditional figure drawing groups, but the therapeutic aspect at INNdulge inspired him to build a weekend of it. “Palm Springs is an ideal escape from the chaotic daily life most of us endure,” he explains. “This will be a time to connect with other men and recharge our spiritual batteries.” For those who may feel reluctant to attend a nudist weekend, Shungaboy understands. “It’s perfectly natural as we have all been ingrained by media and society to be insecure about our bodies. We’re all friends at Naked Artists & Friends Weekend, so c’mon and dive in! You’ll be glad you did.” Register for Naked Artists & Friends Weekend at www. mensnakeddrawing.com/palmsprings/ Out of town attendees can book their room at www.INNdulge.com

FITNESS
WORKING OUT AND LOOKING GOOD BY JILL LANGHAM
Ah, Fashion and Style in combination with Fitness! Well, I can certainty relate to that!
In the early 2000’s a whole slew of fitness competitors began creating their own collection of gym wear that came to us here in the states right out of Brazil, a country that’s known for sexy fashion.
I’ve been working out in a gym for nearly 40 years and have seen it all when in comes to fashion or the lack thereof! In the past, fashion at the gym was relatively non-existent. However, over the last decade things have changed quite dramatically.
Once Lululemon hit the gym both men and women alike jumped on the fashion bandwagon.
Now before I launch into my critique of gym fashion, let me clearly state that what you wear won’t affect the outcome of your workouts, but nonetheless it’s a fun topic.
Today the market is flooded with actresses, fitness models, and clothing designers, not to mention the king of sports, NIKE, all of whom have their own signature brands, concepts and fads! And then there is Zumba and Yoga, both of which have huge choices of clothing and accessories.
Outside of dancers and Jane Fonda followers, who worked out in super fun fashions back in the day, most people looked pretty ratty, if I do say so myself. Do you remember the advent of men’s gym wear that channeled women’s palazzo or parachute pants? That was a sight for sore eyes! Or how about the Onesie from Everlast? That was really scary!
32 THESTANDARDPS.COM
Again, will this enhance your workout, probably not! Will it get you a date, possibly might! And then suddenly sneakers/footwear/athletic shoes became gym apparel with every color in the rainbow making it’s way to the gym floor.
Most people moan about the price of a membership at a gym but will turn around and spend $100’s even $1000’s (I’m not kidding) on gym apparel. Did you know that there are gym shoes that cost over $1500? I mean, really? I own a knockoff pair modeled on that $1500 designer that cost my best friend $150. He bought them for me as a birthday gift. I was flabbergasted but super appreciative. It’s fun to see the combinations that people come up with, especially here in Palm Springs at World Gym, which has been my home for the last 12 years. I of course, am no exception. I come up with a myriad of fun clothing just to spice things up a bit. One thing I can say is that by wearing a top that covers “the girls” but shows off my abdominal muscles helps me to constantly work those muscles. There are mirrors all over the gym and as a role model for fitness I feel it’s important to show off my physique. If my abdominal muscles are covered up it’s easy to lose track of them. This way, I constantly have to keep my abdominal muscles flexed. So it’s a rare day that I will have them covered. Interestingly, I have friends who live in Europe who remind me that I must cover myself up when I go to their gyms because they consider it inappropriate to have your breasts or midsection showing. Even tank tops are banned! Damn! Then there are all the accessories that have been designed to assist us in reaching our fitness goals. There’s the Fitbit and the Apple watch, to name a few. I have to admit that I was more motivated while wearing the Fitbit. I got up from writing to move around when I was gently reminded that I had not moved in 60 minutes. I also had a big laugh when I wore the Fitbit to Oscars and achieved 23,000 steps in 4 hours of dancing! Who knew? Lastly, the dew point and humidity in Palm Springs have changed dramatically this year. We are all sweating much more profusely and I hate to say it, but I’ve noticed that the gym is much more “smelly” than usual. It’s from mildew. So, we all may want to make sure that we’re letting our sweaty gym clothes dry out completely before tossing them into a gym bag or in the trunk of the car. Or you might want to rinse them out as soon as you get home, or better yet, wash them more frequently. Just saying. Regardless of what you are wearing while you’re working out, running, doing yoga, Zumba, or playing tennis, golf, volleyball or the likes, it’s that you are active! GO YOU! To your Health! XOXO

WELLNESS
7 WAYS TO STICK WITH YOUR EXERCISE GOALS BY ADAM SINICKI
ALWAYS DO SOMETHING
PRIME YOUR MOOD
I know hundreds of people who have at some point told me they are going to get into shape but then failed. It’s a sad fact, but I’d say that there’s a relatively low chance of most people actually managing to get into shape. Following the laws of probability then, if you were planning to get into shape then unfortunately it would seem the odds are stacked against you. Of course every case is unique and there are certainly things you can do to increase your chances of success. So what is it that goes wrong for most of these people? Well if they came to me for training advice then it certainly wasn’t a problem with how they went about it or their knowledge. And unless they had no limbs then I’m not really willing to accept that it’s genetics either – sure it may be harder for some people, but it is always possible to get into shape. So what’s the problem then? Well ultimately it must just come down to their attitude, their sticking power and their determination. Most of these people would have been fine if only they’d stuck at their goals – but for whatever reason they got disheartened or distracted and they gave up. So then if you want to be the lucky 1% who actually achieves their ambitions, then this is what you need to change. You need to find a way to make sure that you stick to your goals no matter what. Here we will look at how to do that and how to help yourself stick to your routines and your diet plans.
34 THESTANDARDPS.COM
BE REALISTIC First of all you need to be realistic with what you hope to achieve. This is important because you can otherwise get disheartened. Say to yourself before you begin that you may not see results for a year even, but that you are going to give it that long no matter what. Meanwhile you need to accept that there WILL be set backs, and that these shouldn’t mean you completely give up. You may find that you can’t work out for a few days but that doesn’t mean you should give up. Be steadfast and expect the unexpected.
SHIFT YOUR FOCUS In fact, stop focusing on your end goals at all and stop watching your weight. As they say ‘a watched pot never boils’ and constantly measuring yourself is only going to get you down, as it will make any changes necessarily incremental. And anyway, if your goal is ‘to lose one 15 pounds’ in one month, then that’s unrealistic. Anything could happen between now and then and you might break a limb or be forced to miss lots of sessions because of varied reasons. So what you need to do then is to make your focus the exercise itself, in otherwise challenge yourself to train at least four times a week for six months and make THAT the goal. This is something you have
REMEMBER WHY
A LITTLE HELP
tighter control over and it means you aren’t constantly watching your weight. Instead, by focusing on the training you will find that the weight loss or muscle building takes care of themselves.
MAKE IT FUN Another thing you need to do is to make yourself ENJOY the gym. I’ve managed to work out regularly for the last 11 years because I actually enjoy going to the gym as a way to blow off steam and as a way to feel like an action hero rather than just pushing pencils all day. It’s the only time I feel like a warrior and that ensures I stay in the gym, which in turn ensures that I stay looking strong. Even if you can’t get enthused about the gym itself, find ways you can make it more fun or more bearable by going with a friend, by listening to inspiring music or by setting yourself some kind of gym challenge.
ALWAYS DO SOMETHING This is my real secret to success and that’s to ALWAYS DO SOMETHING. In other words, even if I am feeling ill, short on time and coming in from a night out drinking I will still do at least 20 pushups. I do this first of all because something is better than nothing, but more importantly because it stops me making wussy excuses. If I just felt tired and was making up reasons I couldn’t work out, then normally after I’ve done those twenty press ups I’ll find myself going ahead and doing the whole lot. Because you can ALWAYS fit in twenty pushups, you’ll find that you can no longer rely on the old reasons not to train.
PRIME YOUR MOOD Feeling too tired and depressed to work out? Well then just find something that inspires you and use this to encourage you to work out. For me it’s watching an action film, but for you it might be listening to some upbeat music. Even just smiling and jumping up and down a little can get your blood flowing and get you feeling a little more energetic and a little more in the mood for working out.
REMEMBER WHY Another thing that can help is to focus on the reasons you are working out. For many of us that’s to look ripped and muscular, but for others it’s to lose weight. If you are motivated more by the stick rather than the carrot, simply find a roll of fat on your stomach and next time you think about snacking on cake, or about skipping a workout, just pinch it and look at yourself and you’ll probably stop.
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS... Something else which can be a great help is to train with a friend and you’ll find they can motivate you a lot because you won’t want to let them down, and because you can take it in turns to gee each other up. If you are trying to lose weight then I find that one of the very most effective ways to do so is to join some kind of class such as Karate or Salsa. This way you will have something fun you want to do on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and you’ll have a whole support network encouraging you to go and to have fun with when you’re there. This will all help to ensure you don’t drop out, and as the class is active you’ll find yourself burning calories almost by accident.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND? BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE
People contact us every day and many hope for quick answers to their legal questions. Sometimes we can provide some very basic information over the phone or by email, but in nearly all cases, we need a lot of details about a person’s situation in order to give any legal advice. This means that we ask you to fill out a questionnaire, or provide a lot of documentation. And then we schedule an inperson meeting to go over the issues.
My partner and I are buying a house. Should we put “joint tenants” on the deed?
Here are some of the questions that we are often asked, and the generic answers we have to give if we don’t know all the details. As you will see, we can’t tell you what you should do in your particular situation without knowing all the facts:
Joint property may be responsible for the liabilities of either or both owners. Suppose your partner is being sued by a creditor, or by a person injured in an accident. The entire property could be taken to satisfy a judgment. Also, if one owner becomes mentally
36 THESTANDARDPS.COM
ANSWER: Do you have a trust? If so, the house should be titled in the name of the trust, with you and your partner as trustees. If you don’t have a trust, there are several reasons why joint tenancy might not be the best way to hold title.
incapacitated, the property will be in legal limbo, since both owners must sign legal documents to sell or rent it, and even day-to-day management can be a real problem When one partner dies, the other automatically owns the entire property. Heirs of the deceased partner can’t inherit any part of the property. You could title the property as “tenants in common”, which means that each partner owns a specific percentage of the property, and can leave it to anyone he wishes through a Will. But Wills must usually be probated in court – a lengthy and expensive process. What should you do? Make an appointment and bring us the details of your situation. We can help you sort it all out. I have been with my partner for 14 years, and now he says he is “moving on”. He wants me out of the house right away. All along, he promised to take care of me because I can’t work any more, and he said I would inherit everything when he died. What should I do now? I want to file a palimony suit so I can get what he owes me. ANSWER: First, “palimony” is not a legal term. It became a popular name for financial protection for someone who is in a consensual relationship other than marriage or registered partnership. Financial support is never guaranteed to a partner, but in certain long-term relationships where one partner promised financial support or other asset protections, and has failed to provide them when the relationship ends, it is possible that a court lawsuit will be successful. It is a matter handled in Civil Court, not Family Law Court where divorces are heard. A partner must prove a legal basis for a claim, such as an oral, written, express or implied contract. The court will determine whether there was an enforceable contract, and if so, whether one or both of the parties have breached it. What should you do? Gather all the written and other evidence that shows there was a contract during your relationship and provide us all the details of your time together. Be aware that even if there is some evidence in your favor, a lawsuit will be a very long and very costly process. I’m having a tough time paying my mortgage. I don’t want to lose my home. What can I do? Will filing bankruptcy help me? But I don’t want to ruin my credit rating. ANSWER: Is your lender getting ready to foreclose on your property? If not, you can look at a loan modification. There are
various federal and state programs that can assist homeowners who have regular income but are having a hard time making their mortgage payments. But the rules are stringent, and many people can’t qualify because of other debts or inability to make payments even at a lower interest rate. If you have a second mortgage or home equity line of credit on the property, it can be even more difficult to qualify. You should look seriously at selling your property, even though you would rather keep it. If your mortgage loans don’t exceed the current market value of the house, then you may be able to get out from under the debt without ruining your credit rating. If the property is worth less than the amount owed, then the lender might approve a short sale, and allow you to sell the house for less without penalizing you. It will affect your credit rating, but not as much as a foreclosure or bankruptcy. If these options are out of the question, you might file bankruptcy to delay foreclosure – but it won’t necessarily save your home in the end. It is unlikely that a Chapter 7 bankruptcy will help if there is little or no equity and the mortgage payments are high, or you are behind on making your payments. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy might save your home under the right circumstances. You must have regular income that is likely to continue over the next few years. A bankruptcy trustee will handle all your assets, and will approve a payment plan for you, negotiate with creditors to set up a reasonable repayment plan, and then make those payments for you on a regular schedule over a period of 3 to 5 years. It is also possible to eliminate a second mortgage or equity line as part of the process, which will free up more money to be paid on the first mortgage and other debts. What should you do? Fill out a very detailed financial questionnaire and come to meet with us. We can review everything and help you determine what your most reasonable options are.

FALL IN LOVE WITH LIZ BAXTER BY MONA ELYAFI
Liz Baxter made history being the first openly lesbian contestant on the iconic game show Love Connection airing on Fox. The highly anticipated episode, which aired July 27, 2017, marked the first Gay/Lesbian episode of the show in its history of over 1000 episodes. A timely episode to say the least in light of Trump’s very recent attack on the community with his US Military Ban on transgender people. Emmy Award winner Andy Cohen hosts the one-hour reboot of the original dating show that features single men and women from all walks of life searching for romance. It was Cohen who asked Fox if gay/lesbian singles — who had been absent from the original show that aired in the 80s and 90s could be included in this latest iteration. The network’s response? “Of course!” It is exciting that this inclusion not only promoted LGBTQ visibility but also was broadcast on mainstream network television as a nonissue. “I never thought that I would be in this position, but I’m super proud of being gay, so I’m happy to be an advocate in any way. It’s a perfect time to say, ‘We’re here. We’re a part of the mainstream community. We’re on TV. And we’re not going away,’” says the 32year old Liz Baxter. Liz understands the need to accurately portray the LGBTQ experience. The trailblazing Indianapolis native wants to change mentalities when it comes to visibility. She’s already travailing to move the needle and pave the way for others with her ongoing commitment to amplifying and celebrating queer women’s voices as a LGBTQ blogger and a Vlogger through her YouTube channel, which she just launched. As for her relationship status? As we know, the show ended on a positive note with Liz and Alison becoming a couple. Fast forward to today … are our lovebirds still together? Is the Love Connection still going strong? Let’s just say we might see the self-proclaimed lipstick lesbian back in Andy Cohen’s hot seat … yep the show just received the green light for season two. SOCIAL COMMENTARY
WE WILL NEVER FORGET SEPTEMBER BY DR. STEPHAN M. SCOGGINS
In 2001 our thought process was forever changed regarding the month of September. The date, September 11, 2001, is known for, a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda on the United States. We commonly refer to that date as 911. I would like to explore that experience. Let’s begin by pausing to recall, where were you? Where were you when you had an experience that would forever change your life? Did you see what just happened? For some of us, we had to consider an experience other than 911 that changed our lives…forever. As heinous as 911 was, for some people it had no significance and pales to the devastations they have experienced in their lives. Now, do you remember where you were when you had that experience that changed your life forever? We’re currently observing a revitalization of racial divide; reading and watching protests that without the dates posted we could easily think that it is archived footage from the 1950s or earlier. These current atrocities triggered a 911 experience for me.

Picture this, no, not Sicily with Sofia Patrillo from the Golden Girls, but rather a 9-year old black boy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We weren’t called African Americans in 1970. We had just recently been given a promotion from colored to black. I was attending an all white middle school, Patrick Henry. There was a classmate, a little 9-year old white girl, named Julie. Of course, I remember her last name however; I will redact it to protect the ignorant. Julie and I clearly liked each other. We sat together in the cafeteria, shared nowor-later candy and I was even forward enough to carry her books between classes. After school, I would ride the bus, a short bus, not for “special” kids, but for the few blacks who were being bused to the other side of town. As a precocious and studious kid, I completed all homework as soon as I got home and as a treat looked forward to calling Julie, using our rotary dial phone, hanging on the wall in the kitchen. I just had to set the stage for you. (Smile) On this particular day, I called Julie and as our conversation began her mother was clearly heard in the background. I will NEVER forget
these words. “Is that that nigger!” Hang up the phone!” The next thing I heard was a dial tone. That was my last conversation with Julie. She didn’t even speak to me at school. The comforting part was that I was very clear that was her mother’s directive and not hers. Believe or not, I have re-lived that experience in my mind more than I can ever count. While it wasn’t 2011, it was a 1970 September experience that changed my life…forever! It didn’t change my life in that I stopped speaking to white people, or that I became an angry black man. It changed my life in that I received a new set of ideals. Additionally, I was robbed of innocence. Dare I admit that I was even embarrassed, yet no one else knew “what had happened” except me. Well, of course, Julie knew. I mentioned above that we refer to September 2011 as 911. As a healthcare professional, having worked in the emergency room for more than two decades, I find it interesting that our country’s emergency alert system is 911. When there is a need for immediate intervention, we even teach young children to call 9-1-1. When a patient arrives in my emergency room, I have to quickly assess and triage what is going to stabilize this person? I’d like to use this as an analogy and quite frankly, a great process for what WE should all
do to start the recovery process of our “unforgettable” Septembers. If we don’t damn lie! If we are able to definitively identify the source of our injury, then we can take our first step to better living. For some of you reading this article, the source of your injury is not September 2001 and certainly not Julie from September 1970. (smile) Your source of injury is, however, a break up, health concerns, financial difficulties, loss of a loved one, including pets, coming out fears and rejection, transgender challenges, church drama, loneliness, hunger for intimacy (not sex), and/or sadly, generalized clinical depression. Whether you realize it or not, you are experiencing an emergency situation. You don’t have the luxury of procrastination. Time is a precious commodity we cannot replace. Wait, there is one catch. The emergency room has a limited stay. You don’t get to stay in the emergency room, in an “emergent” state for your whole damn life! You will either be transferred to a medical floor, surgery, a long-term care facility, outpatient or the morgue. You will have influence as to where you will go, based on your participation. Needless to say, I recovered from Julie many years ago. However, that experience was not the best teacher, but it was the most convincing. Let’s make September 2017 unforgettable!

IN MEMORIAM
JD DISALVATORE JD Disalvatore, a prolific LGBT film and television producer and director and gay rights activist, died on Thursday, August 24th after a long battle with cancer. She was 51. A proud marching band trumpet player in Miami Palmetto Senior High, JD went on to study communications at Boston University, absorbing as much as she could from her creative writing and film classes. After graduating she packed her bags, pointed her car toward Los Angeles and never looked back. That trip started what would become a long and storied career. As a filmmaker credits include Eating Out 2, A Marine Story, Gay Propaganda, Elena Undone and the multi award-winning Shelter, which won a GLAAD Media Award for best feature film in limited release and in 2012 topped the list of The 100 Greatest Gay Movies Of All Time newnownext.com’s. In 2009, JD was honored at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center’s An Evening With Women with a LACE Award for her work in the community, was featured in Go Magazine’s “100 Women We Love” and this past March was honored with a West Hollywood Women in Leadership Award. She was also on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, where she served a term as Vice President of the Board and was last President of the Board of Directors of the Frontiers Foundation. JD’s love of film and writing skills extended to magazine and newspaper outlets including Clout, Curve, GayWired.com, PlanetOut.com, Gay.com, QTMagazine, Power Up and here! online in addition to her daily blog on Gay and Lesbian entertainment. JD was, by habit, a facilitator, linking her peers to collaborate and her mentees with mentors. Her love of connecting people came together with her enjoyment of a good cocktail in the creation of the very popular Smoking Cocktail, a monthly networking cocktail event to bring members of the LGBT film and film-loving community together. It’s mathematically impossible to calculate all the hours JD logged for the causes she cared about, including Outfest, The Point Foundation and the East Valley Animal Shelter. For Outfest JD worked as Festival Manager in 1999 and 2000, continued to be actively involved as a volunteer and was a constant presence at events and functions with beloved camera in hand. In 2014, Outfest awarded JD with the Tom | Thom Award for her volunteer service
throughout the years. Through the Point Foundation JD worked as a mentor to contribute to their mission to empower promising LGBTQ students to achieve their full potential. Always a passionate lover of animals, in the last few years, when cancer slowed her down in other ways, JD amped up her dedication and commitment of time and fundraising skills for her favorite cause of all - animals. If you were marginalized in any way or had four legs, JD had your back with a megaphone in hand. JD leaves behind a large family of friends, her brother and sister Roanne and Carl DiSalvtore, and a grateful LBGT community. Her huge activist heart, passionate spirit for filmmaking and her indomitable, fighting spirit will not be forgotten. A memorial event will be planned for the near future. If you would like to honor JD please donate to Outfest, Point Foundation and/or the East Valley Animal Shelter.
