Located at 230 Museum Way (directly across from the Palm Springs Art Museum in the new Downtown Palm Springs public park), CAMP will include an informational kiosk, a box office, a café by Cheeky’s, the Modernism Week merchandise store by Destination PSP, a demonstration kitchen, designer lounges and a theater. In these consultations, experts can give advice and recommendations about current or future renovation projects.

There will be several free events and “happenings” at CAMP that will offer fun and engaging activities for attendees. These include a Palm Springs Life photo opportunity with a large-scale photo backdrop of the iconic Kaufmann House poolside setting, made famous in the 1970 Slim Aaron’s photograph “Poolside Gossip.” Attendees can sit in lounge chairs and take photos of themselves as though they were in the original photo creating their own poolside party. Nelda Linsk, a former owner of the celebrated Kaufmann House that was depicted in the photo, will be on hand at CAMP to pose with attendees and sign copies of the 2015 Poolside Reunion photo that was taken at the residence in 2015 and featured Nelda Linsk. INDESIGN MODERNISM ORIGINS BY DANN FOLEY

Modernism Week is upon us once again and Palm Springs gears up for the largest influx of international visitors all year! As a designer you can imagine my level of interest to be high and I will partake of the many panels and presentations being offered in the chock-full schedule of events. But, I got to wondering (as I often do here at The Standard). Where did all this modernism come from? Who started it and why Palm Springs? Everywhere I travel around the world people know Palm Springs, the very name conjures up visions of movie stars and midcentury modern style. But, did you know that the modern architecture movement in southern California and specifically, Palm Springs got its start even earlier? The construction of modern classic buildings in Palm Springs actually started in the 1920’s. People like Lloyd Wright, the son of the master designer Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Oasis Hotel in downtown Palm Springs. It was one of the early examples of what became California Modernism. In the 1930’s, architects like Richard Neutra and R. M. Schindler were designing custom modern homes for wealthy clients and movie stars alike in the desert oasis. We are more than just butterfly roofs and patterned concrete block in Palm Springs. As the city reached the calendar “midcentury”

14 THESTANDARDPS.COM

period several architects had huge careers building custom homes, tract house communities and public buildings. All of these structures were in the modern style, constructed with the newest materials that were changing the way we all lived and built. Our little/BIG town was and still is the center of the midcentury modern movement in the United States. One might suggest that I am overstating the affect Palm Springs had on the movement but, think about it, if someone were to ask where you go to see the best in midcentury architecture in the U.S., I am willing to bet you that virtually all of them would say Palm Springs. Chicago has an impressive number of buildings and homes but nothing can compare to the sheer number of midcentury structures than Palm Springs, not to mention the allure of Southern California. That brings us to the George Alexander Construction Company, the king of modern architecture in Palm Springs. I know, I know, you will want to argue with me that Donald Wexler was bigger. Wexler’s contribution to the style and the region cannot be denied but, for sheer quantity and direction, no one could touch Alexander. The reason is simple; they created affordable, budget conscious modern housing tracts on a huge scale, not seen before in Palm Springs. Alexander built more than 2,500 homes in this small town

in only about a decade and they did it in a community known for luxury and quality. In my humble opinion, this gave them cache that was not afforded other modern housing communities anywhere else. Value was their goal and they did it with, style! I am proud to say that I have worked on, designed, renovated and even flipped a number of Alexander homes (as well as Wexler’s) in my time. They offer their own set of challenges when attempting to update them both structurally and from a design perspective. Though I have great reverence and appreciation for the style and period (as I do all periods and styles), I never want my clients to live in a museum of any kind, including a midcentury one. Just as the buyers of the original Alexander homes were looking for a new way of living, so today’s buyers want the latest conveniences and systems. Introducing many of these elements today can be tricky but not impossible. As a designer it is my responsibility to bring that same sense of style and value to every project, just like the Alexander Construction Company did back then. Updating something that many consider to be sacred takes a light hand and lots of patience, along with keen problem solving abilities. Updating or recreating an Alexander home is not unlike updating a traditional colonial or any other period of architecture‌ you can live with the past, without living in it. How happy will you be in your midcentury home if you have a spotty Wi-Fi connection? Or plumbing that leaks and faucets that give brown water? Or the high cost of heating and cooling when you realize you are living with single paned windows? To truly love an Alexander or midcentury modern home today is to embrace the style without settling for the limitations of the period in which they were built. All it takes is some creativity, financing and an understanding of who you are and what is important to you.

What makes you happy when you see yourself sitting poolside in your Alexander built home today? The questions can be equally as hard as the answers in some cases but what you gain is a house that is truly a home and a lifestyle that is personal instead of a period piece. As I have written and sometimes preached here each month, the best design is design that is personal. Your home should tell a story about who you are and what you love. Midcentury modern design can be a major element of what you love; now I challenge you to show me who YOU are living among the iconic elements of this enduring style. Live Well!

JOURNEY INTO GAYTOPIA THE MUST-READ QUEER SCI-FI GRAPHIC NOVEL BY MICHEL KHORDOC Find Out What Happens when Faye Dunaway’s Evil Twin Sister kidnaps Madonna? Out artist, Joel Craig is the creative mind behind the newly released queer Sci-Fi graphic novel dubbed “Journey into Gaytopia”. Joel’s graphic novel comes at the right moment. A time when we all need to laugh! There’s been so much negativity, people need a lift. Plus where else would Mae Dunaway, Faye Dunaway’s evil twin sister, be kidnapping Madonna? Gaytopia also comes at the right time filling a much-needed void in the gay Sci Fi graphic novel genre. While the graphic novel genre continues to grow in popularity, there are still not many gay science fiction graphic novels out there. Some of them have a gay character that shows up once in a while but are not major characters with really extensive story lines. The witty graphic designer is employing the graphic format for the more visually driven readers - to delve into fictional subjects with no special super powers that anyone (especially in LA) can relate to, providing a unique and original insight into his own ideal world, namely Gaytopia, in a graphic design style reminiscent of the early days of The Simpsons and Family Guy cartoons. A Star Wars fiend, Joel’s impetus for writing Gaytopia was to create a world (far far far away) he himself would want to journey into day after day - a world where we all have the freedom to be who we truly are without fearing the judgment, discrimination and prejudice of others. Simply put Gaytopia is a haven where acceptance and tolerance rule. While now the majority of Americans has effectively welcome the LGBT community into mainstream culture - notably with some all 50 states clearing the way for same-sex marriage- there is still more progress to be made.

There are politicians who still believe gay people should be put in jail or even worse. There are still small towns where young people living at home still need to be in the closet because they are afraid of being thrown out of the house by their parents. Joel wanted to create a world where being gay was not even an issue and gays are people who are allowed to contribute their work to the universe and make it a better place. SO WHAT IS THE BOOK EXACTLY ABOUT? A fun and easy read Gaytopia is the journey of broke actors Joel Craig and C. Stephen Foster. The pair has just been cast as series regular roles on The Julianne Moore and Madonna Half-Hour Comedy Show. During filming, Madonna is kidnapped by Mae Dunaway, the evil twin sister of Faye Dunaway, and whisked away to the planet, Zerock, that exists in an alternate parallel universe. Joel and Stephen are in hot pursuit in efforts to rescue Madonna from the evil clutches of May and get help from some new friends along the way in the city of Gaytopia. Will Stephen and Joel rescue Madonna? Find out in this graphic novel that will dangle you on the edge of your seats and leave you wanting more.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR Joel Craig is a nurse by day but actor and writer by night and lives with his musician husband, Donovan Holden. They have been married twice with the second time finally being legal. In addition to Journey to Gaytopia, Joel has also written Welcome To Nursing HELLo, a Graphic Memoir. Joel is also an actor, having appeared in the films, Sideshow and Sordid Lives as well as the web series, What’s My Intention? which he co-wrote. A VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS AMIDST A BRUTAL CRACKDOWN, THIS GAY EGYPTIAN LOOKS FOR HOPE BY OMAR SHARIF JR.

EGYPT PROTEST

18 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Every morning I wake up to an inbox flooded with disturbing and disheartening messages out of Egypt. The messages come from friends and strangers alike, members of the gay Egyptian community I left behind five years ago when I came out as gay and withdrew from the country, hounded by threats of violence, intimidation and even death. The message writers are desperate to do what I did: escape a country gripped by an outbreak of homophobic persecution. Failing that, far too many of the writers say, they want to escape their lives. I do not know what to tell them. I would like to offer them hope. I would like it not to be false hope.

When I came out in 2012, I wanted to use my status as a relatively public figure — grandson of two of Egypt’s most beloved celebrities — to push LGBTQ acceptance through what I then assumed would be our darkest hour. Unfortunately, since then conditions have only worsened, and the country is now gripped by a brutal crackdown against some of its most vulnerable citizens. In recent months, Egyptian police have begun stopping men they suspect of being gay on the street, searching their phones for incriminating photos or hookup apps, and throwing them in prison for sentences ranging from six months to six years. There have been raids on bathhouses and at least one same-sex wedding. There are stomach-churning reports that police have subjected suspects to forcible anal exams, which are — let us not mince words here — a particularly humiliating form of torture. The supposed impetus for this crackdown was a widely circulated video from a September concert in Cairo, during which some attendees waved rainbow flags in support of the band’s gay singer. The images spurred a wave of hateful rhetoric from Egyptian cultural commentators, who claimed these debauched radicals (as gay Egyptian people are imagined to be) represented a slap in the face to our country’s identity and goals.

OMAR SHARIFF JR.

These hateful messages found fertile ground in a country that is rightfully frustrated by the slow and painful pace of progress. As many frustrated societies have found, gay Egyptian people make for a convenient scapegoat. When we are already forced to live in the shadows, we are the perfect, faceless villains. In the photographs of the men dragged into Egyptian jails, they all cover their faces with their shirts or their hands, hiding their shame and leaving observers to imagine that these men could be anyone (anyone except their friends and brothers and sons).

GAY HARRASMENT

I don’t talk about this with my American friends. They hear these stories with the horror you’d expect, but I can’t help suspecting that it’s laced with some faint admonishment, and behind their pity I hear: “Well, what did you expect, having the foolishness to be born a gay Egyptian?” They don’t know the fundamental warmth and joy I associate with the Egyptian people. They don’t understand the fierce patriotism and pride I feel for my country, a pride that exists for most LGBTQ Egyptians, despite their persecution. Though the country’s conservative talking heads paint the gay Egyptian community as treacherous radicals, our goals are the same as the government’s: security, stability and economic prosperity. (Prosperity, it bears mentioning, is harmed when Western tourists associate the country with human rights abuses and choose not to visit.) The LGBTQ community is not even anti-Islam: it is a false dichotomy too often perpetuated that divides religion and LGBTQ acceptance. In 2016, Egypt’s grand mufti, Shawki Allam, unequivocally stated that no one has the right to hurt or harm homosexuals. Yet despite the words of one of the highest religious authorities in the country, religion continues to provide a convenient cover, allowing the people who trap us, beat us and torture us to imagine that they have morality on their side. It’s difficult to explain to people who came of age during the heady wave of victories for the American LGBTQ movement that our goals in Egypt are much more modest. For the most part, we want only to live in the same quiet we have for generations, free from the terror that the smallest gesture or glance will betray us. I can’t tell the young gay Egyptians who message me to come out en masse; I don’t want them to be cannon fodder for my ideals.

I can’t even tell them to come out to their own families; few of them had the liberalizing experiences my grandparents did, working on movies with people from all walks of life. So I tell them to be safe, to be careful, to hang on. I try to offer LGBTQ Egyptians a form of hope I can believe in, that the entire history of human progress is a continual journey towards inclusivity. Once people have had their first taste of community, of love, of freedom, of a chance to live their authentic identities, there is no dam that can hold it back. I wish I could tell the people who write me messages how long they will have to wait to feel safe in their own country. That answer will partly come down to the country’s access to positive gay Egyptian representations in media, since storytelling is still one of the most effective ways to change perception; for now such stories are censored. It will partly come down to a commitment from institutions like the World Bank to safeguard LGBTQ people by making respect for all human rights a condition of investment. More than anything, it will depend on the Egyptian people accepting that the tide of tolerance is inevitable. But Egypt, and every nation, must decide how many lives will be lost and broken before they acknowledge that we are not faceless men but brothers, sisters and fellow citizens. There is nothing radical about what I am. LGBTQ people have existed in Egypt since the dawn of our great civilization. And there is nothing radical about what I want. I want to go home, quietly, safely. I want to visit the graves of my grandparents, whose funerals I was unable to attend. I want to give my country the same things my grandparents gave: my full, honest self, not as Egypt’s scapegoat or its martyr, but its patriotic son.

THE AMAZON TRAIL

ZIP LINE VEGAS BY LEE LYNCH

She’s going on a zip line in Las Vegas. That’s what my sweetheart announced this morning. It gets worse. She said the zip line goes over city streets and buildings—and here I was envisioning a sweet pastoral zip across raging river rapids and sharp rocks. Now I only have to worry about her colliding with concrete, metal, and glass. Head first. Seems you have options; she plans to zip belly down, like a diving bird, a Peregrine falcon perhaps, which can reach speeds up to 200 mph. She concocted this scheme with our friend Heather, who lives in Vegas and knows all the cool things to do. I have a feeling this trip will be a lot different than the one I took to the Lambda Literary Conference back in the early 1990s. Before my sweetheart and Heather, I traveled alone, so there was no chance of doing anything riskier than surviving the unexpected snowstorm I hit in the mountains of Northern California.

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

But truly, I was more petrified of attending the Lammys than I was of mountain passes or ziplines. I knew Jennifer Abod, producer of “The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen,” back in New Haven in the 1970s. When I ran into her this summer, she said she remembered me as “very, very shy and very, very skinny.” I mumbled something about being fifty pounds more substantial now, and she may have recognized that the shyness has endured. Or else thought I had the verbal skills of a feral banana. The truth is that I’m just as shy and timid around people as I was in the seventies. And in the nineties. The easiest part of that Lammys trip for me was walking from my backstreet motel along the fabled “Strip” to the awards ceremony. When I entered the massive room of white tablecloths and strangers, I had to about face and find a toilet immediately.

A while later, I found the Naiad Press table and assumed I belonged there, in the one empty seat I saw. This wasn’t long before Naiad changed direction, remaindering books and returning rights to poorly selling writers, but I didn’t know that yet. Nobody but me was freezing me out. Everyone was proper and I was my usual bump on a log self with no conversation in me. Fortunately, I was next to Naiad Press and “Poets and Writers” editor Christie Cassidy, a playful femme who valued my work and gave me the courage to make a brief presentation on stage—to an award winner who wasn’t in the audience and hadn’t sent a proxy. What could be worse for someone like me than to find myself alone on a stage with an unclaimed trophy? After the lengthy program ended, I felt as isolated as when I’d arrived. I didn’t know who to talk to and was scared someone might talk to me. I slunk through the glamorized halls of the casino, breathing ghastly amounts of cigarette smoke, feeling like a feral banana, an invisible one at that. That doesn’t change. I go to literary events now, like Saints and Sinners, where I’m warmly welcomed, know my way around a podium, and still quake in my shoes in crowded rooms without my sweetheart. Sometimes I come away from a conference with little memory of it because it takes so much of my spirit to participate. I know I’m not alone. Even with improved social skills it takes everything I have to start a conversation, or to join a group of laughing, talking people. I’ve been accused of snobbery when I’m actually hiding out. Or people think I don’t like them because I seem standoffish, when I’m actually dying inside, ashamed of my shell of reticence and not knowing how to emerge from it. Or maybe I am snooty, having missed any lessons on small talk. Thank goodness for women like Mercedes Lewis, who created “Con Virgin” programs at The Golden Crown Literary Society conferences—Vegas being the site of this year’s conference. New attendees get special attention. There are events just for them, if they choose to participate. If they’re not too nervous to accept. I’m one of the latter, more likely to go off in my miserable, lonely corner and become more self-consciously obvious than I would be if I could blend into a group. In the end, it’s all about ego. I’ll do almost anything, apparently, to protect my ego from being bruised. But, I have learned how unfair that is to others. I’m one of millions; when I hide, when I won’t risk being tongue-tied, I could instead be making life easier for someone as shy as myself. I’m still the same person inside, and it’s punishing every time I reach out, but I’ve learned, if I’m not adept at talking, I’m a pretty good listener. If I can manage a few seconds of greetings and questions, if I can get out of myself and show interest, I’ve found that people are generally quick to tell their stories, dreams, ambitions. Not as quick as my sweetheart and Heather will be, high above the theme park called Las Vegas, but no feral banana either.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER Double A. It has many uses, that little word-dash-letter. It’s good for future baseball players. Good for a pre-teen girl. Great, if you’re a student trying to bring those grades up. And, as you’ll see in “Buzz: A Stimulating History of the Sex Toy” by Hallie Lieberman, if you’re an adult, double-A is something you never want to run out of… A dozen years ago, to make a little money, Hallie Lieberman found an unusual job: she was a home-party sex toy salesperson in a state where the selling of sex toys was illegal. Ever afraid of being arrested, she stuck to the “script” that the company gave her; it was stilted and full of euphemisms, and the job was demeaning and embarrassing. She felt like she “wasn’t actually teaching people anything.” From her PhD studies, Lieberman learned that “sex toys were ancient.” Some thirty millennia ago, ancient Germans carved phallic objects, though some historians argue that sex mightn’t have been their intention. At any rate, the practice of using artificial devices for sexual pleasure spread across Europe and into Asia and, soon after the Middle Ages, mentions of sex toys began showing up in literature. Closer to home and beginning in Victorian times, rectal dilators and vibrators were made in the U.S. and sold as “medical devices,” approved by doctors; the former were made by “respected rubber companies,” while the latter were available for discreet purchase in department stores for decades. Until laws were created against it, you could even have the devices mailed to your home; later, to circumvent those and other laws meant to keep sex toys out of the hands of everyday citizens, vibrators, dildoes, and dilators were sold as “novelties.” In 1965, a ventriloquist who was an engineer by profession started manufacturing sex toys; in the early 1970s, a paraplegic welder began making them for women, and advising the disabled on their use. Others joined the revolution until, in 1972 (and though they’d long been a staple of sleaze), sex toys gained respectability inside a narrow waterbed-store-turned-sex-shop run by two gay men, hetero people welcome… Of course, there’s so much more to this story but here’s one interesting thing about this book: while you might think it’d be titillating with maybe a few nudge-nudge-winks, that’s not the case. Author Hallie Lieberman doesn’t do that to her readers. Instead, what you get is exactly what its subtitle promises: “Buzz” is a history of sex toys, from ancient times to modern day, and its use by straight people, the disabled, the LGBT community,

and feminists. Through the narrative, you’ll see how advocates tied sex toys to equality and self-confidence, and how the struggle to make the devices acceptable unfolded but is still not over (including a surprise-not-surprise toward the end). That’s serious stuff and Lieberman offers it in a well-rounded way, though not without lightheartedness when appropriate. This isn’t a book to shock – it’s meant to inform and that’s accomplished, enjoyably. The prurient, the curious, and pop-culture fans will love “Buzz,” no batteries required. “Buzz: A Stimulating History of the Sex Toy” by Hallie Lieberman c.2017, Pegasus Books $26.95 / $35.95 Canada / 359 pages

CVREP TO PRESENT THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA? The Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CVRep) has announced it will present three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Edward Albee’s highly provocative award-winning play, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?. Exemplifying this season’s CVRep theme of “Romance, Real or Imagined”, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? touches on relationships and betrayal in true Albee style. Well known for pushing the envelope, Mr. Albee, uses sexuality and humor to deflect where the real problems are based. The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? tells the story of Martin, a successful middle-aged architect who leads an ostensibly ideal life with his loving wife Stevie and gay teenage son, Billy. However, when Martin confides to his best friend that he is also in love with a goat (named Sylvia), he sets in motion events that will destroy his family and tear his life in shreds. “I wanted to present The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? at CVRep not only because it truly personifies this year’s creative theme of Romance, Real or Imagined, but because the play also focuses on the limits of our seemingly liberal society,” says CVRep Artistic Director, Ron Celona. “By revealing this family’s crisis, we, the audience, are asked to question our own moral judgment of social taboos.” Directed by Joanne Gordon, (who helmed last season’s acclaimed production of Disgraced) CVRep’s The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? runs approximately one hundred minutes and will be presented without an intermission. The four-character play will feature Arthur Hanket, Sharon Sharth, Sean Smith and Ian M. White.

The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? premiered on Broadway March 10, 2002. Described by numerous critics as Edward Albee’s most provocative, daring, and controversial play since Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - The Goat… won all the major awards for best new play of the year including the Tony, New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards. “…as challenging—and…as outrageously funny as theater gets.” - New York Post The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? will enjoy a four-week run from Wednesday, March 7, through Sunday, April 1, 2018 at Coachella Valley Repertory. The theatre is located in The Atrium, 69-930 Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30pm, with 2pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $48 (Previews), $63 (Opening Night), and $53 for all other performances. For more information, call 760-296-2966 or visit the website at www.cvrep.org

WELLNESS

DETOXING YOUR LIFE BY JILL LANGHAM

In last month’s article, I shared with you that I had chosen to go on a detox program for the final 2 weeks of the 2017. I’ll admit that it wasn’t easy turning down party invitations, avoiding drinking or eating all the holiday sweets but something very remarkable happened that I think you might find interesting. I managed to avoid getting sick! I did not catch the horrible flu that is going around, or any of the upper respiratory bugs that most everyone I know, came down with. I think that is nothing short of a miracle. Here are some of the thoughts I had about it. I had avoided sugar and alcohol, both of which weaken the immune system found in our intestines. I believe I was in an acidic state when I began the detox and by detoxifying my liver, pancreas, gallbladder and intestinal tract, I strengthened my immune system and was able to fight off these nasty bugs. Prior to the detox I had been having horrible allergy symptoms for almost 2 years. I had been unable to spend anytime outdoors without getting a runny nose, having uncontrollable sneezing attacks, having itchy, watery eyes and a lemon-yellow discharge from my nose. It was frustrating to say the least, especially since the weather had been so beautiful and I wanted to get some natural Vitamin D from the sun. Years ago, I worked with an incredible D.O, or doctor of osteopathic medicine, who told me that all allergy symptoms are a result of having a dirty liver. So, keeping that in mind, I wondered if I would notice any difference in those symptoms. And I’m thrilled to report that all of my symptoms are completely gone! Nada! Vanished! Kaput! If that had been the only thing that had changed, I would have been thrilled, but that was just one of the things I noticed. I lost weight, not muscle size but instead, I lost fat all over my body. I lost it in my abdominal area; in my waist circumference; in my upper and lower back; and in my hips; thighs, and naturally in my breasts. My skin is a clear as a bell, and my hair is actually shinier and more manageable.

into my body whereas before is was just being flushed out and did not allow me to get my Vitamin D by exposing myself to the sun for 15 minutes a day. But, I found myself thinking about the immune system and wondered if there was a deeper meaning to the word “immune” which might help me strengthen it on a daily basis. Here’s what I mean. The definition of immune is 3-fold. The first definition relates to the obvious that reads something like this: resistant to a particular infection or toxin… The second – relating to immune resistance. And the third – protected or exempt, especially from an obligation of the effects of something and it was this one that stuck out for me. I have always been someone whose intestinal system responded strongly to conflict, depression, sadness, threats, fear, rejection, disappointment and a myriad of other emotions. But, I’m happy to report that these same emotions were not affecting me the same way. As I was becoming stronger as a person, my intestinal system was also getting stronger. In other words, I was becoming immune to fear and could now fight back and stand up for myself. Combining the detox with my own personal growth has made me stronger. So, suffice it to say that my detox was very successful and think that I will do this same detox again this Christmas. Feel free to contact me for more details. Yours in health……………..XOXO

I was also able to get tan for the first time in over a year! This showed me that my Vitamin D supplement was now being absorbed

P.S. I don’t get the flu shot!

5 WAYS TO JUMP-START YOUR HEART HEALTH

1

2

3

4

If you’re looking to improve your heart health, each day is all about making a choice that moves you in the right direction. You’d rather stay in with a big bowl of ice cream. But maybe today, you could click off the TV set and take a walk with a friend. It’s easy to see why heart health is a pressing concern. One in three adults live with one or more types of cardiovascular disease, according a review published in the journal Circulation. Over time, changes in the heart and blood vessels can lead to a host of devastating problems, including heart attack, heart failure and stroke. On top of that, lifestyle factors, such as poor diet and a lack of physical activity, lead to one in five deaths in the U.S., according to a study published in 2011 in the Journal of Public Health. The good news is as the weeks and months pass, these healthy choices do pay off and make meaningful shifts in your health profile.

2. GET UP AND MOVE MORE OFTEN The Surgeon General says 2.5 hours of moderate intensity exercise each week promotes good heart health. To get started, visit your doctor to find out what is safe for you. Then work activities you enjoy into your routine, whether it’s a walk in the woods, a leisurely bike ride or swimming laps at the community pool.

Turning these choices into habits is well worth the time and effort. Choice by choice, you could see big improvements.

4. DE-STRESS AND DECOMPRESS If you constantly feel the effects of stress in your body, it may be time to take steps to reverse that. Scientists haven’t found definitive proof, but they believe stress could trigger inflammation, a precursor to heart disease. So go ahead, and seek some joy: Laughter releases “good” HDL cholesterol. Exercise is also a proven stress buster, and studies show a mindfulness mediation practice reduces blood pressure.

1. REACH FOR WHOLE FOODS Diets abound, but the classic Mediterranean-based diet always comes up as a winner for heart health. It’s simple to follow because it’s made up of whole, healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, olive oil and fish. In 2013, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine said switching to a Mediterranean diet can prevent 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and heart disease deaths in highrisk people.

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

3. SEEK THE COMPANY OF OTHERS This may not come up at the doctor’s office, but the time we spend with friends and family does reward us with better heart health. Isolation is linked to depression and that’s linked to higher rates of heart disease. Pick up the phone and call someone. Schedule lunch with an old friend, plan a special day with younger relatives or sign up for an activity.

5. KNOW YOUR RISKS Hopefully, you’re already making those annual doctor visits

5 because your blood sugar, blood pressure, weight and cholesterol can all tell us something about our heart health. But what you really want to know is whether there is fatty buildup in your arteries, because this too can lead to stroke, peripheral vascular disease and carotid artery stenosis. Doctor office tests offer indicators and warning signs, but they don’t tell you how much you’re blocked.

Luckily, there’s a safe and affordable test that gives you the hard data on what is happening inside your body: vascular screening. If you think learning the truth will discourage you, one study indicates the opposite may be true. The report published in the Journal of Community Medicine and Health Education says people who had vascular screening reported more positive changes to their health several months after their vascular screening than the control subjects who weren’t screened. For example, 61 percent of screened respondents said they ate healthier foods since the screening, versus the 46 percent who were not screened. Truth is empowering and it can give people a powerful incentive to change, even if the news isn’t what you’re hoping to hear. To get your own vascular test, find out when Life Line Screening is coming to your community. You’ll get a results pack you can take to your doctor, so you can work on a plan together to improve your health. To find out when a Life Line screening clinic may be scheduled in your area, visit www.lifelinescreening.com or call (877) 754-9631.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED? BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE

What should I do if I get harassing phone calls or emails from creditors? Here are some practical steps to follow: 1. Do you really owe the money? If so, work out a payment plan to pay it off. If you don’t cooperate, the creditor will most likely take you to court and get a judgment against you. Then they may be able to attach your wages or other income and get paid by taking away a substantial portion of what you have to live on every month. 2. If you don’t owe the money and can prove it, contact an attorney to help you defend your position. 3. If you simply can’t afford to pay the bill, consider bankruptcy. It can give you the opportunity to get rid of your debts and start a fresh life. Even if the creditor has already received a judgment from the court to take your income, it can be stopped when you file a bankruptcy petition. Where should I hide my Will? Wait a minute - why do you want to hide it? Does it contain bad news for some of your relatives and friends and you don’t want them to see it? Are you afraid that it might get lost if you keep it in your desk or file at home and you don’t have a really special place for it? Well, please think twice. If you hide it well, or forget where it is, chances are no one will find it at all. What’s the benefit in that? In your Will, you named a person, and probably a second, backup person, as executor of your estate. You trust them enough to put them in charge of everything you own. They are the ones who should have your specific instructions on where the Will is. When you are gone, your executor will need it right away, not after a long search for where you might have hidden it. Should you put your original signed Will in your safe deposit box? Definitely not a good idea! No-one can get into your box without a court order, and your executor will have a tough time getting one without the Will to prove he or she is the executor. If you must put it there, make your appointed executor a signer on your safe deposit box account so no court order will be required to open the box to access the Will (and any other important items or documents that you keep there, because they will all be needed). If the Will is truly lost, like in a fire or flood, it is still possible to resurrect it. After you sign it, a scanned copy of the Will (and all your other important documents) can be stored electronically in “the

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

cloud” and can be accessed anytime. We set up “cloud” storage for our clients’ estate planning documents so they can relax, knowing that everything is securely stored in case the original documents disappear. Be sure to give your account name and password to your proposed executors and attorney. Am I a criminal if I try to bring about my own death in California? Is anyone else going to be in trouble if they help me? Suicide or attempted suicide is not a crime in California. However, until now, it has been a felony for a person under any circumstances to deliberately aid, or advise, or encourage another to commit suicide. In 2016, a new “assisted suicide law” has taken effect, and aiding critically ill patients with 6 months or less to live, under very strict and narrow guidelines, is no longer a crime. In these cases, a patient must be mentally competent and personally request, twice verbally and once in writing over a specific period of time, that a physician prescribe a life-ending drug. No-one, including the physician, may administer the drug to the patient. The patient must take it on his or her own.

What should I say to an officer if I am stopped for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol? You must cooperate with the authority, but do not agree to answer any questions or to allow a search of yourself or your property. Simply state that you want your attorney present before any statements, examinations or other exercises occur. You can be required to take a breath test or blood test to determine your blood alcohol level, if the officer has probable cause to believe you are driving under the influence. There may be penalties if you refuse to take these. But you are not required to take field coordination tests (for example, walking a straight line) or alcohol screening tests. If you are arrested or cited, call an attorney right away. What does a Notary Public Do? In California, a notary assures that a person signing a legal document is actually the person he or she claims to be. A notary must see photo identification (driver license or passport), and look carefully at the signer to make sure it is the same person. The notary will compare the signature on the document to the signature on the ID card. The notary then signs a sworn statement on the document that the signer appeared in person, signed the paper, and is the person claimed to be. The notary affixes his or her official stamp by the signature. Notaries do not read the signed document and can’t guarantee anything about its validity or legality. They simply affirm that the person who signed it is the person who stands before them. A notary may also confirm an oath which verifies a person’s sworn statement of the truth in a document. The person swears under oath that the statement is true, and the notary swears that the person took the oath.

ZHANA ROIYA

GETS DIRTY ON THE DANCE FLOOR BY JAMIE BOOTH

Zhana Roiya returns to the dance floor with “U Sexy Mutha U,” the follow-up to “Lick Me Up,” her smash Billboard #1. Written and produced by Barry Huffine and Stevie F (the producer behind many of Madonna’s early hits), “U Sexy Mutha U” is a high-energy retro pop record infused with gospel house. “I drew inspiration from KC and the Sunshine band for the track,” explains Roiya. “I’ve always loved how they made songs that made ya stop what you were doing with a hypnotic and infectious hook. I wanted to capture that essence in the song.” At first listen, the mainstream radio potential for “U Sexy Mutha U” is obvious. Zhana Roiya’s soaring vocals turn the song into an anthem that club fans will want to sing at the top of their lungs, simply because it feels good to do so. The song stirs a wide array of emotions from silliness to sexiness. It is hopeful yet, at the same time, takes no prisoners.

38 THESTANDARDPS.COM

“We wanted to create a song that was catchy and that anyone could relate to,” explains Stevie F. “What’s more universal than desire? There’s a time in everyone’s life where their eye catches someone with a crazy sex appeal that really revs up their motor; someone they can’t stop thinking about who they want to be with.” “I had been wanting to work with Zhana on a project for years” reveals Huffine. “Everyone in the Dance Music scene knows how she’s able to deliver a lead vocal that’s on point with sweet harmonies that are simply amazing”. Matt Consola of Swishcraft Music, the label releasing the single, agrees. “If club fans had any idea how many massive club hits Zhana’s been on through the 90’s and 2000’s, under various names, it would blow them away.” He is rolling out some exciting remix interpretations of “U Sexy Mutha U” from top talent including 15-time Billboard Dance #1 remixers Dirty Disco (David Bowie, Smash Mouth, Clean Bandit), Bearlin Records super producer Jose Spinnin Cortes (Offer Nissim, Amuka, Suzanne Palmer), London-based Circuit mega producer and label owner GSP, and former Paisley Park/Prince engineer turned producer Larry Peace. There are also versions by Nu Disco award winner Lucius Lowe, Spain’s Italo-Iberican pioneer OBTUS (aka Julián Guarque) as well as DJ/remixers Max Grandon, Guy DeGiacinto and the team of Alberto Ponzo & Fabio Campos.

“Finding the right remixers is often the hardest part of putting out a dance single,” Consola continues. “All to often, labels release a slew of remixes in various genres just to try to force their way to every different type of dance floor, from Deep House to Tech House, EDM, Nu-Disco, and Circuit. While that’s all part of trying to make a dance hit, few songs lend themselves to so many genres.” Luckily, ‘U Sexy Mutha U’ does, and each mix on the package offers an interpretation that takes the original into new and exciting territories. “The dance floor needs a song like ‘U Sexy Mutha U’ because global current affairs are so dark and bleak,” says Consola. “All this division is taking a toll. We need uplifting music we can escape into. Like the great Inaya Day says, sometimes you need to ‘Take Your Problems to The Dance Floor,’” he laughs. “Believe it or not, I first heard the hook of ‘U Sexy Mutha U’ in a dream,” adds Roiya. “As soon as I woke up, I recorded it on my phone and waited for the opportunity when I could lay down the vocals in studio. I know in my heart that ‘U Sexy Mutha U’ will be a song to define the year ahead.” “U Sexy Mutha U” releases to iTunes and all music streaming services on February 9th. THIS IS NOT THE END FOR MILCK BY MONA ELYAFI

Atlantic Records singer/songwriter and artist fueled by social change, MILCK has released the empowering title track, “This Is Not The End,” from her eagerly awaited debut EP, which came out January 19th. On release day, MILCK performed her viral anthem “Quiet,” on The Today Show. The new studio recording, which was released in November as MILCK’s “musical #METOO” – read MILCK’s touching letter to her fans – and inspired by the song’s impact on the oppressed and survivors of all races, creeds, and colors around the globe since its initial release in January 2017, is available now at all DSPs. “Quiet” became widely known as the unofficial anthem of last year’s historic Women’s March On Washington and was recently featured as #1 on Billboard’s “The 20 Best Protest Songs of 2017” in addition to being included in NPR’s “Year In Music 2017” feature. This year, MILCK continues to play an active role in the allimportant Women’s March Movement by partnering with the nonprofit organization, Women’s March Alliance, performing “Quiet” at the Women’s March on New York City on Saturday, January 20th. This past fall, MILCK released a breathtaking new rendition of “Ooh Child,” recorded for the short film “Love Over Bias,” the newest installment of Worldwide Olympic Partner Procter & Gamble’s “Thank You, Mom” campaign. Born Connie Lim, MILCK has spent much of the last decade crafting a series of acclaimed independent releases while tirelessly performing increasingly well-attended gigs around her native Los Angeles. Penned in 2015 with frequent collaborator Adrianne Gonzalez, “Quiet” proved MILCK’s worldwide breakthrough, a cathartic pop anthem for people of all races, creeds, and colors who have suffered and survived in the face of trauma, trial, and tribulation. In January 2017, MILCK traveled east to the momentous Women’s March On Washington where she created the #ICANTKEEPQUIET Choir of DC, a 25 member group of diverse female vocalists. Together they united to deliver seven acapella flash mobs, surprising fellow marchers throughout the day with remarkably soulful renditions of “Quiet.” A video of the flash mobs was captured by the awardwinning director Alma Har’el and quickly went viral after being

posted on her Facebook page, drawing over 14 million plays in just two days. By week’s end, MILCK had appeared on TBS’s Full Frontal With Samantha Bee – performing alongside the GW Sirens and Capitol Blend – while also earning massive media attention from the Washington Post, NPR, Refinery29, BuzzFeed, AP, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and many more. MILCK has spent the past several months performing and giving keynote speeches at major events for various organizations including the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Women In The World, Women Moving Millions, and more. MILCK shared the news of her partnership with Atlantic Records directly with fans in a handwritten letter posted on her social media platforms. The letter, which explained her heartfelt decision, was shared wider in her hometown’s LA Weekly, alongside a beautiful profile feature. Widely acclaimed for her distinctive blend of pop and provocative, poetic lyricism, MILCK has drawn attention for tracks including “Devil Devil,” featured in an array of TV projects including FOX’s Lucifer and E!’s The Royals. I LOVE BEING BLACK! BY DR. STEPHAN M. SCOGGINS

“I love being black!” If that answer were a category on Jeopardy a possible response may be, “What is something that you rarely hear?” To put the response into context we would have to study the value of being black. And who studies the value of being black? Why would someone study the value of being black? Now, that’s something else that frequently pops up. Can we say black or do we have to say, African American? While there may be some confusion as to the semantics of black, there sure seems to be clarity on the identification. Let’s cut to the chase. If you are black, raising or teaching a black child, dating or married to a black person or healthy enough to care about black people then you should be wrapped up, tied up and tangled up in studying the value of being black. For starters, let’s begin with defining the word, value. As defined by the greatest, or at least the most convenient, resource on earth, Google (smile), value is defined as, the regard that someone is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness. Wow! How can we not pause to honestly assess if we see the value in black people? Well, as the famous cliché’ goes, “Our actions speak so loud our words don’t mean a thing.” Now, let’s consider the definition within the definition; “ the regard that someone is held to deserve.” Deserve? What the hell? Back to Google. (smile) Deserve is defined as, when you do something or have or show qualities worthy of (reward or punishment). This is where things start getting juicy. As determined by whom? During our developmental years, many of us seek recognition and validation from our parents and teachers. If for some sad reason you feel like you didn’t get it, then you just damn missed it. In the words of Luther Vandross, “It’s over now!” You now, and always have, had the luxury of validating yourself. You get to establish behaviors and random acts of kindness that would be viewed by anyone as qualities worthy of a reward or punishment. You no longer have to be an empty pitcher to a full fountain waiting for someone else’s verdict. The next part of our working definition of value says, the importance. I bet you know where I’m going next? That’s right, back to Google. (smile) Importance is defined as, of great significance or value, likely to have a profound effect on success, survival, or well-being. Hmmm, in studying black history there are many blacks whose very lives had and have a profound effect on the well-being of families, communities, countries and the world. While we recently

42 THESTANDARDPS.COM

and proudly celebrated the late, great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., are you able to name three (3) black civil rights activists? Do you know what is meant by and the significance of Civil Rights? Don’t get me started because you KNOW that I will dive into more definitions. (smile) Here are a few MUST know names for your study. Thurgood Marshall, Nelson Mandela, Mary McLeod Bethune, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Lena Horne, Nina Simone, Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, Rosa Parks and include your name if you have in any way contributed towards the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. Do you feel important to your family, to your community or to yourself?

The definition continues with, worth, defined as the level at which someone deserves to be valued or rated. In our society, while naysayers judge people by where they live, what they drive and what they wear, the “sane sayers” universally accept and assign a high rating of worth based on one’s character, which is who you are when there is no one looking. Lastly, as we continue to explore why and who would study the value of being black, our definition of value further addresses, one’s usefulness. This is where we should “fess up”. With regards to the development of your community, are you, have you, or are you willing to be USEFUL in some capacity for others? Listen, if you haven’t, you haven’t. It just means that you can get started...today! Here are a few considerations: Volunteering in your community, helping at churches for community outreach, tutoring students in homework, providing transportation to someone for doctor visits or grocery shopping, teaching a young parent how to manage finances, educating others of the importance of black pride, display black artwork in your homes and businesses and certainly set

an example of character that exudes worthy qualities. Regardless of your race, we would like to ask you to email at info@blackisthecoloroflove.com and share with us how you have been inspired by a black person? As always, your name and contact information will remain confidential. There is a huge responsibility that goes with the greatness of being black. The historical significance of blacks being prohibited from even learning, yet continue to demonstrate remarkable achievements, remains to be nothing less than miraculous. And for those blacks fortunate enough to be dark like me, just appreciate the power of how our mere presence commands attention as we enter a room. And as you feel eyes fixated on your beautiful, dark color, just look around the room with your eyes and simply say, “I love being black!”
