A PERFECT SIGHT MODERNISM WEEK 2020 BY BOB BOGARD

Modernism Week’s signature event will take place February 1323, 2020, celebrating fifteen years of highlighting midcentury modern design, architecture, art, fashion and vintage culture in Palm Springs. For it’s fifteenth year, the 11-day festival will feature a wide array of events including the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale this is the 20th anniversary of the show and it will feature a record 90 dealers this year. Tours of iconic homes in more than 30 neighborhoods including the Signature Home Tour on both weekends, architectural walking, biking and double-decker bus tours, a world-class series of film screenings and informative talks, classic cars, garden tours, the historic Annenberg Estates at Sunnylands tour, nightly parties, and much more. Following are highlights of Modernism Week 2020. For dates, times, costs and a much more extensive schedule of events visit www.modernismweek.com HISTORY In 2005, following the success of both the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale and the annual symposium organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Council, a group of local design and architecture aficionados created a committee to produce Modernism Week’s first event in February 2006 to showcase the world-renowned midcentury modern architecture of Palm Springs.

6 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Among the members of the initial steering committee were representatives from the Modernism Show & Sale, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, the Palm Springs Modern Committee, the Palm Springs Historical Society, and the Palm Springs Art Museum. The first weekend included only a few hundred participants who attended five events including the symposium, a few lectures and a reception. Each year the demand for additional programing increased and the founding partner organizations expanded their offerings. By 2009, programming was offered on two weekends. Eventually mid-week programming was introduced, and the event continued to grow progressively in scope and attendance until it reached its current schedule of 11 days and hundreds of events. Modernism Week is the largest celebration of midcentury and modern architecture, design and culture. It started out as a collaborative, grass-roots community effort comprised of a few home tours, cocktail mixers and educational events that were planned to coincide with the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale occurring in Palm Springs, CA each February since 2000. Modernism Week has now grown into an internationally acclaimed annual event that spans 11 days; and has spawned a shorter October version called “Modernism Week Fall Preview.” Both events include home tours, lectures, films, double-decker bus architectural tours, vintage theme parties and more. In 2018, more than 10,000 attendees participated

in Fall Preview and in 2019 more than 152,000 attendees enjoyed the more than 375 Modernism Week events. GIVING BACK Modernism Week is a charitable organization. It provides scholarships to local students pursuing college educations in the fields of architecture and design as and supports local and state preservation organizations and neighborhood groups in their efforts to preserve modernist architecture throughout the state of California. In 2019, more than $1.87 million was raised by partner organizations that produced Modernism Week events. This money was either gifted to other nonprofit charitable organizations or reinvested back into the city for civic improvements. MODERNISM WEEK 2020 SHOWCASE AND FEATURED HOMES SHOWCASE HOME Gilman Residence, 1948 Herbert W Burns, Architectural Designer & Builder Described by architectural historian and author Steven Keylon, as one of Burns’ “more lavish homes.” Having been partially demolished and sitting neglected for many years, this 1948 home of Dr and Mrs. Gillman is being restored for Modernism Week 2020 by the dynamic duo at Thomboy Properties. Inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier in the style of Late Moderne, a precursor to what would later be termed “Modernism”, Mr. Burns grounded the design of this home squarely in that vernacular: horizontal lines with flat roofs, cantilevered overhangs, vertical pylons, screens, grids and planters. The Gillman house was designed to take advantage of the natural beauty of the desert as well as the appealing climate.

Burns captured the indoor-outdoor lifestyle by seamlessly running his trademark Santa Fe block from the outside all the way through to the inside of the home. He also added easy accessibility to the outside with wide horizontal overhangs for shade and sun protection. To further blend into the Palm Springs environment he used natural materials such as wood and Arizona sandstone (which has been sandblasted and restored to its original finish). In addition, Burns selected a color palate that mimicked the natural colors of the desert. FEATURED HOMES: Guggenheim House (1967) Architect: Unknown, Modernism Week is pleased to debut this breathtaking project by Michael Ostrow of Grace Home Furnishings. A 1967 architectural gem, the home was recently renovated made to stunningly capture modern Palm Springs style. Sited on a quarter acre lot, the 2,800 square foot home has four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a beautiful pool and spa. The interior spaces feature a seamless blend of contemporary furnishings and vintage pieces, and the bold color palette expertly mixes pattern and texture to achieve a fun yet sophisticated atmosphere that embodies the carefree Palm Springs lifestyle. Divine DuBois (1972) Architect: Charles DuBois Mastermind behind the very popular Modernism Week Show Houses in previous years, interior designer Christopher Kennedy, debuts a spectacular renovation of a quintessential midcentury property just for Modernism Week 2020. As part of the iconic Canyon Estates neighborhood, this freestanding “Executive Home” was one of the last

TAKE FIVE

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH TRAVIS SMITH & CHRIS BALE OF MODERN BEAR 1. How has the Modernism Movement influenced you personally? Chris: Growing up visiting my grandmother’s Midcentury home here in Palm Springs was formative, and influenced my eventual studying of architecture in College. The masters of the 20th century design really spoke to me. I didn’t finish Architecture school, but I eventually became a realtor and when I moved back to Palm Springs full time in 2011, I discovered the joys of being immersed in selling Midcentury homes. Travis: I sort of live and breath it LOL. I got hooked on vintage before it was called “Mid Century Modern” in the early 80’s. A lot of people called it junk back then. But there was also a retro scene starting to happen in L.A. and the bigger cities. I was living in Phoenix, Arizona and like any good, young gay, was shopping the thrifts. It was there I discovered my passion for vintage 50’s and 60’s, both the clothing and the furniture! I soon became a “picker” for retro stores in L.A., and was driving stuff over in my 1967 Dodge Van and selling it to them. Yup, officially hooked. I’d eventually open my own vintage MCM store in Washington, D.C. called “Good Eye” which I owned for 10 years. 2. Does your Modern Bear business ever intertwine with your professions in Palm Springs? Chris: Always. ModenbearHomes.com will be back soon and bridge my Real estate world and Modern Bear world! And my real estate business and Modern Bear co-host the Modernism Yard Sale coming in Feb. Travis: It sure does. Modern Bear hosts the annual Modernism Yard Sale during Modernism Week and IBC weekend in the parking lot of H3K Design, where I work as an interior designer. And of course, we do the modern art market, PopulArt, at IBC every year! We are also in the process of putting together a vintage MCM auction that will benefit local charities here in Palm Springs!

12 THESTANDARDPS.COM

3. Why do you think Modernism has become so engrained into the Palm Springs lifestyle? Chris: The desert attracted some vanguard architects here in the 40s. Travis: Palm Springs is the “Capitol of Mid-Century Modernism” for good reason; it was designed and built during the 50’s and 60’s when the iconic MCM architecture was in full swing. This town has so many fabulous examples of modern architecture from those periods, that there are two Modernism Week events a year devoted to it!

5. Can you give us what we can expect at the Modernism Yard Sale this year?

4. What are some of your favorite events during Modernism Week? Chris: I love the home tours. Seeing the pride people take with their MCM homes and condos is inspirational and satisfying, so much great architecture in this town! Speaking of I’ll have my studio condo at Racquet Club Cottages West on their tour 2/16. And I really do love our baby, The Modernism Yard Sale. My favorite part is checking on all the vendors halfway through and hearing that they’re selling lots of stuff. Everyone is happy, vendors and shoppers! Travis: Well, besides our own Modernism Yard Sale, I LOVE the vintage trailer show devoted to 50’s and 60’s travel trailers!

Chris: Vendors with amazing things. Complementary coffee from Koffi, and donuts while supplies last! I pulled together the first Modernism Yard Sale in Feb 2013, under the guidance of my former boss Paul Kaplan and it has been growing ever since! Expect fun, great finds, and happy modernism fans finding that perfect piece for their MCM homes or future homes! We can help with that too! Travis: Oh gosh, it has gotten so big since Chris started it 7 years ago! Modernism Week has deemed it their “most popular free event” and judging by the crowds, I got to believe it! We literally get thousands of people between 8 am and noon! This year’s sale is our biggest yet with vintage vendors selling their wares; clothing, furniture, records, art, you name it. There will also be some new artists and craftsmen selling their line inspired by Mid Century Modern! I’m excited, but also really look forward to that afternoon when it’s over and I can just collapse on the sofa LOL.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER Halloween is over this year, but not for you. Your decorations are still up because the season is young. There’s plenty of time left for skeletons, monsters, and wind that howls like a banshee. You can still hear spirits high-stepping in your upstairs. Most important of all: as in the new book, “Toil & Trouble” by Augusten Burroughs, witches walk among us. At just eight years old, Augusten Burroughs learned that he was a witch. Riding the bus home from school, he’d had the sudden realization that something happened to his grandmother; he knew without knowing, saw without seeing, and he rushed to his mother in a panic. Matter-of-factly, she calmed him; she was a witch, too, and had sensed that her younger son had the “Gift.” “It was the strongest bond my mother and I had when I was young…” Burroughs says. Most people think of Hollywood magic or crones on brooms when they think of witches but those are just myths, he says. The truth comes in three parts: witches have existed for as long as have humans. They’ve “always been misunderstood.” And yes, “witches are real,” and each is a little different, as Burroughs learned when his Aunt Curtis (a witch) introduced him to a root woman (another witch) who told him something about his future. Witchcraft isn’t perfect, though. It didn’t help much while Burroughs was bullied as a boy. Sometimes, spells took longer to work than he hoped they might. It isn’t for revenge or hurtful purposes, although there is a way to influence how things turn out and patience is key. “Magick” worked when he wanted to move from Manhattan to his beloved New England; it didn’t work when he wanted to talk to a friend on the phone. It warned him of a possiblybad situation near his new home, but there were no details. It helps find lost objects, but not lost confidence. And when his magick went missing as his husband fell seriously ill, Burroughs learned that “Things are not as they appear. They are much, much more.” When starting “Toil & Trouble,” you could be forgiven for thinking that author Augusten Burroughs is pulling your leg. He does, after all, write with humor and this witch stuff is conjured, right? Isn’t it? After a few more pages, it won’t matter. You’ll be so engrossed by this tale of the magick of life and so caught up in the stories Burroughs tells, that witchcraft really becomes no big deal, no less normal than blue eyes or brown hair. And while it’s the main reason for this book and everything attached to it, it’s more of a magically

delightful, meaningful backdrop for tales of family, growing up gay, falling in love with a man, finding home, and forgiving. “Toil & Trouble” is not a dark-and-stormy-night kind of book, and it won’t make you jumpy. There are, however, a few hair-raising pages that’ll make you squirm but mostly, it’s funny and sweet and charming, a cauldron full of goodness. “Toil & Trouble” by Augusten Burroughs c.2019, St. Martin’s Press $27.99 / $34.99 Canada 320 pages

THOROUGHLY MODERN MORRIS

SAM MORRIS RE-DEFINES MALE EROTIC ART BY MIKE BAHR

Sam Morris is often called the modern-day Tom of Finland. Like his predecessor, Sam Morris’ work is stylized, homoerotic fetish art that depicts the quintessential gay male. However, where Tom of Finland celebrated men with extreme muscular body types, often performing aggressive sex acts, Morris’ work tends to focus on the handsome but relatable ‘boy next door’ gay man. “I aim to create an aesthetic that is romantic, yet sexy,” he explains. “My work invites the viewer to fantasize over the man they have a crush on at work, or maybe the one that works at the local coffee shop or the DILF they are secretly following on social media.” In his art, Morris embraces masculinity while also recognizing a man’s inherent femininity. “Wearing masculinity as an outfit to conform is not healthy,” he argues. “Men should express both sides of their personalities freely, without prohibition, how and when they wish.” His main message is that the body and sex can be explored in a beautifully artistic way without being smutty or cheap. “For me, it’s more about capturing a man’s vulnerability; photographing the subject so that the viewer sees him as a boyfriend or a lover, rather than a piece of meat.”

What do you hope to convey in your brand of gay erotica? That gay sex and male nudity can be soft, romantic and beautiful.

Would you consider your erotic art to be modern? It’s definitely a modern look at gay erotica yes, but with a nod to a more romantic or renaissance era.

What is it that you love so much about the male form? I love the delicate nature that can be found in the structure that has such strength and masculinity.

You’re being called the modern-day Tom of Finland. Wow! Those are some big shoes to fill! I’ve always stayed true to myself and the sort of work I’ve wanted to create, and I’ve been creating a lot of it for a while in my style. I’m not sure I’m quite up there with that legendary status yet, but maybe one day. Has Tom of Finland been an inspiration? Oh, yes. I first came across his work when I was a teenager. I bought a collection of originals online and I became fascinated with them and his story.

20 THESTANDARDPS.COM

How do you define the modern man? A modern man is someone who is not afraid to be vulnerable. What do you say to those who believe masculinity is under attack? I argue that fragile masculinity is, masculinity isn’t. How many different mediums of art do you work in? Photography and film is the backbone of my work, but I’m also a painter, sculptor, and writer.

Your erotic films probably get the most attention. What separates your work from traditional adult film? No one is acting in my films. Everyone involved is in control of what they want to express; consent is absolutely key. Would you find it offensive if your work was labeled “porn”? No, it wouldn’t offend me. There are elements of porn in my work, but the majority of it isn’t. What are your thoughts on today’s adult film industry and its’ talent? It’s more fearless and celebrated than it ever has been. A lot of porn stars today are showing us that sex work is not something to be ashamed of and I applaud that. Would you date a porn star? I normally wouldn’t like to date anyone that is doing similar work to me, as it feels too concentrated. I prefer to date people who have a completely different life and reality altogether. Gives my life more balance. Are you single? I am actually dating someone at the moment. What is ahead for you? Obviously, I’ll continue to shoot beautiful boys all over the world. I have a few other exciting things lined up. Follow me on Instagram to learn more! Visit Sammorris.me. Follow Sam Morris on Instagram @ justsammorris

BATH DOOR BALKS AT BOOTING HOSTAGE HOSTAGE TRAPPED FOR NINETY-MINUTES SUSPECT SUBDUED WITH ELECTRICAL WEAPON BY LEE LYNCH A woman in a remote town in Oregon suffered a harrowing ninety minutes before her rescue by three brave public servants. The woman, who wishes to remain unnamed for “professional” reasons, reports pounding on the hollow core washroom door and adjacent walls for at least three minutes to alert her Lesbian “wife” about the ongoing crime. The crestfallen wife, who also declined to give her name due to her humiliating failure to rescue the hostage, said she was elsewhere in the home, running water, hearing aids off. When the sounds of distress eventually reached her, she tore through the house in search of her damsel in distress. The hostage complained she’d, “Never locked the stupid door in the first place.” Her wife confessed, “There was no simple fix from the mistress bedroom side. That d-m entryway might as well have been cemented shut.” Close inspection revealed an unusual door closure. Eerily, instead of the emergency mechanism in normal doorknobs, this one merely offered a dummy device that could be turned manually, but had no function. “It was decorative only,” was the wife’s amiable comment when the crisis was later resolved. “Bless their hearts, you know how some male designers like their deco.” The suspect, a slim six-footer, had planned well; the windows in that room are arched and tinted, but do not open. “Decorative again,” said the wife, later, with a wink. She reported that her job during the calamity was to run back and forth to the garage, ferrying tools from a well-appointed toolbox. Together, with little ingenuity and much blunt force, wife and wife wriggled screwdrivers and other small tools under the door, but they were no match for the rugged culprit. The suspect showed no mercy. As the desperate hostage struggled to escape, she was injured. Trying to staunch the outpouring of blood, she cried out for the wife to fetch a weapon, stipulating

their heaviest claw hammer. The wife, so armed, swung ruthlessly at the suspect, swung again and again, battering the offender beyond recognition. The hostage attempted every available solution to defeat her restraints. “I was sweating and bleeding and in great pain.” The offender did not relent. Despondent, the hostage managed a weak, vanquished plea to call the authorities. She dressed as she waited. About ten minutes later, three uniformed men confronted the perpetrator. There was to be no negotiation, no swat team, no bullhorns or crowd control. But it wasn’t over yet. This was a wily miscreant. The men plied and prodded with screwdrivers, flashlights and penknives. They were as stymied as the occupants had been. The door remained closed. The officers had no choice but to storm the bastion. One courageous man returned to the truck for a newly issued battery-operated weapon, surplus from the military, he said. Once in hand, the siege was over in no time. The latch apparatus, a springloaded cylinder used to open and close the door, had malfunctioned. In other words, the spring had sprung. The door was intact; the offending mechanism marched out to the metal bin for recycling. At her release, the hostage was asked if she planned to press charges. “No. We fundraised for that electric saw and look how it’s come in handy.” “You can’t beat a rural fire department,” the wife remarked, “for their bravado and know-how.” Leaving, one of the firefighters agreed. “Because who keeps screwdrivers and saws in their bathroom?” The freed hostage jerry-rigged a door handle with a thick washcloth that had no possibility of locking whatsoever and therefore no probability of going haywire. The couple plans to buy more. “This one’s white for surrender. Next will be Red for Valentine’s Day,” said the freed woman. “And green for St. Patrick’s.” “Most importantly, rainbow for Pride.”

FITNESS

HOW MANY STEPS ARE YOU TAKING? BY JILL LANGHAM

Hello Friends, Here’s hoping that you have had a great first month of what I suspect will be a stellar decade, let alone year. In honor of Modernism Month here in Palm Springs, I’ve decided to temporarily rename myself “Thoroughly Modern Jillie” from the 1967 Musical starring Julie Andrews, one of my hero’s. In the film, Millie is a young women who finds herself in the midst of a series of madcap adventures and if you’ve been following me, know that I too have been that girl. But this month I decided to settle down a bit and make better use of my time. I decided to educate myself on some of the apps that came with my iPhone. The one I went to first was the one called Health. Little did I know, but the app tracks the number of steps you walk in a day. As a personal trainer, I’m on my feet up to 8 hours a day, so I automatically assumed I was getting in the 10,000 steps that we’ve been told will increase our fitness and can assist in weight

30 THESTANDARDPS.COM

loss. This originally was made popular in Japan and is now widely accepted as helping us burn an additional 200 to 300 calories a day all of which makes us leaner and healthier. As the Dancing Queen of Palm Springs, I again imagined that I was certainly getting in plenty of steps. But, much to my chagrin, I learned thru this Health App, that I was only walking on the average of 5239 steps a day! Lets take a few things into consideration. First and foremost, you must have your phone on you at all time, which I don’t. I will be getting an Apple Watch in the next few weeks which, will certainly help me to be more accurate. There are of course many other options to chose from which are much cheaper that the Apple Watch, Fitbit being the first one that comes to mind. No matter which one you buy it will still allow you to monitor how many steps you are taking. The key to using the steps as a way to assess your level of health is to remember that at least 3000 of those steps need to

be in the form of a brisk walk to a jogging pace in order to count. Now depending on how much you weigh and your speed of motion you can figure out how many calories you are burning. They have estimated that it takes between 2000-2500 steps to walk a mile. For a person who weighs about 150 pounds they will burn about 80 calories with each brisk mile they walk. So, again, depending on your weight, walking 10,000 steps will burn between 250 to 600 calories which is pretty decent in my book. You can use your phone, watch or Fitbit to calculate the number of steps you’ve walked. Then using a formula that I easily found on the web will allow you to determine how many miles you’ve walked. It turns out that in 50 minutes, I walked 6,258 steps at a very brisk pace. I burned about 184 calories and walked about 2.96 miles. Whereas, while training my clients over an 8 hour period, I am only walking about 3512 steps! That truly freaked me out. As a result, I am now choosing to go for a walk at least 4 to 5 times a week to ensure that I am at least getting the 10,000 steps that I need to stay healthy.

A few years ago, a client had given me a Fitbit to try before deciding if I was going to buy one. I had worn it to Oscars and kind of forgot that I had it on. In those days I was dancing for 4 hours at a time and this particular day was no different. There I was, dancing away, when suddenly I felt a tingling going up my left arm. As a nurse, I immediately thought I was having a heart attack. I looked down and saw the Fitbit all lit up flashing the number 10,000! It was informing me that I had reached my daily goal. I felt accomplished and kept dancing. About an hour or so later, the same thing happened but of course this time it was flashing 20,000! Then about an hour after that it happened again and of course it now read 30,000 and I was on cloud 9! This past weekend while carrying my phone in my fanny pack, I only felt it go off once all day. This time while dancing I only did 5,973 steps in a 3 hour period which tells me I am doing too much talking and not enough dancing! So, this Dancing Queen/Thoroughly Modern Jillie needs to get it together. How many steps are you taking? XOXO Jill

WELLNESS

THE MUSCLE OF THE SOUL BY DANIEL CLEMENS CMT

The psoas muscle (pronounced SO-as) is often considered the most important muscle in the body. It lies deep in the core starting in the lower third of the back, then goes through the pelvis and finally attaches at the femurs. The femur is that long bone in the leg from the pelvis to the knees. Its importance is due to the fact that it is the only group of muscle fibers that connect our spine to the legs. They stabilize the spine therefore affecting our posture. In action, the psoas muscles allow us to bend over and pick up something off the floor. They also assist in going up stairs, bending our hips towards our chest (as in a crunch or sit up); they stabilize the trunk and spine when sitting and also help to move our legs forward when we walk. Without it, we would be completely immobile and unable to breath correctly. Body structure and muscle action are not the only reasons why the psoas is so important. These muscles also have a profound connection to our breath. The psoas has fibrous connections to the diaphragm, which is the muscle under the ribs that allows us to

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

take a breath. This connection establishes our ability to walk and breath. Not only that, our psoas contracts when we are under stress likes fear or excitement. When the psoas contracts, our breathing is stunted, or, when our breathing is stunted, our psoas contracts. Each has an impact on the other, activating our fight, flight or freeze response. During prolonged periods of stress, our psoas is constantly contracted. Psoas contraction also occurs when we: A tight psoas not only creates structural and nervous system issues, it also constricts digestive organs, it interferes with cellular fluid exchange and it has an affect on our emotional well-being. • • • • •

Drive for long periods Engage in a lot of Running or Walking Do a lot of Sit-ups Sit for a Long Period of Time Sleep in the fetal position

A chronically tight psoas sends signals to the brain that one is in danger. This causes the adrenal glands, which produce adrenaline, to overwork and deplete the immune system. Taoists refer to the psoas as the muscle of the soul because it surrounds a major energy center of the body called the lower Dan tien. When the psoas is supple and flexible, subtle energies more easily flow through the bones, muscles and joints, which create a harmonious ground for our emotional state. Our sense of balance is restored and a readiness for play and creative expression opens up, as opposed to a contracted psoas, which is ready to run or fight. Because the psoas is so deep to the hip and accessed near the groin, this very important muscle group is often overlooked in a typical massage. It can be manually released by a therapist, and stretched, with assistance or alone, but first it is best to take a simple test in order to determine which muscle is tight. We don’t want to stretch an already loose psoas. If going it alone, “Bob and Brad” on YouTube have some well-informed videos on testing and stretching. Releasing the psoas by applying pressure or by muscle stretching can help but there is also a more obscure discharge, which needs to happen. This involves a deeper dive into past trauma and the emotions. Our psoas is directly related to our survival instinct. It allows us to fight or run away from danger. It also works to roll us into a ball for protection or when we need to freeze. Since muscle has memory, these triggers can get locked into the muscle fibers. Daily stressful routines like driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic with our right foot constantly going from the gas to the brake can create an unbalanced condition in the psoas. The stress of constantly being on alert can train the muscles to remain in an excited state. The same can be said for physical or emotional abuse, whether past or present. If we are constantly exposed to danger, our psoas is abnormally poised for protection or defense at any time. Sudden shocks like a car accident, surgeries, a difficult birth, a mugging or a rape can also get stored in muscle, especially when the trauma is incomplete. An example of an incomplete trauma is, for instance, when a grenade on the battlefield knocks out a soldier. The unconscious state doesn’t allow the soldier to cough up the dust and debris from the explosion. This still needs to happen but it is never completed. An interesting and effective technique exists to help the psoas release pent up trauma.

Tension and Trauma Release Exercises (TRE) work by fatiguing the psoas muscles to a point where a natural reflex mechanism takes over. Involuntary shaking or vibrating occur which release tension and thereby calm the nervous system. Anyone can do the exercises alone or assisted. It is highly recommended that the first few times be assisted. Unexpected old trauma can be released and it is helpful to have a skilled practitioner nearby. The end result is a clearer, more balanced state of mind and body. Just knowing that we have this muscle group called the psoas, is the start to keeping it loose and supple. Books by Liz Koch entitled The Psoas Book and Stalking the Wild Psoas are great references and help to open our minds towards a new way of experiencing our bodies and how we self heal. ULTRA NATÉ BY MARCO CERRONE

What is your musical background and have you always wanted to be a performer? My musical background started the day I wrote and recorded my first song in 1989! I was actually planning to go into medicine - I started writing and recording with The Basement Boys for fun. I was a club kid and loved the nightlife and the culture of the early House Music scene but that was it for my formal training.

What is your creative process? Well first I have to sit still long enough to let it germinate. I don’t have one particular style of working because there is no rhyme or reason to what my day, week or month may be like so I have to be very flexible. I may write on an airplane or in my car for a few minutes or let an idea live in my head for a while before bringing it to life. I may go in the studio completely a clean slate and start building music and concepts from scratch with musicians and/or producers. I may hear a song on the radio or a guitar lick at a show or a sound or a riff that inspires a concept. Being a creative person you have to constantly be inspired by things that are around you and all of your senses on 100 at all times. Is there a different audience vibe when performing for a predominately LGBT crowd Usually the LGBT crowd is the most fun because they’re very open and up for having a great time. They are in a relationship with you as an artist performing live. It’s a give and take of energies and an amazing level of appreciation for you. What is your take on current day music? Likes? Dislikes? There’s a lot of great music out there that I like and some that doesn’t appeal to me as with anything. I think across-the-board music is suffering because technology has made it too easy to produce and even easier to put out. The music market is saturated with less than stellar work and everybody suffers. If you could hang with anyone living or dead, who would that be and what would be the conversation? I would say Grace Jones because she is such an inspiration, a massive talent and totally my spirit animal! I would probably also like to hang with former President Barack Obama – the conversation would definitely be about his experience as the first black President in such a divisive and hypocritical political climate. You are performing at IBC 2020 this year, have you ever performed in Palm Springs before and what can the crowd expect from this performance? Yes, my last performance and only other performance in Palm Springs was for the exact same event! I am extremely excited to perform for IBC. Always so much love from the community! And the boys know I’m going to deliver the songs that have always made them dance and feel good about themselves and the world around them.

ULTRA NATÉ BY KARL GIANT

What’s next for Ultra Naté? I’m totally inspired by 2020 and I am working diligently these next two months to finish recording what will be my 10th album - an accomplishment in and of itself! I’m hoping to have it finished and ready to drop for early summer so be on the lookout for that! I am also continuing to grow my Deep Sugar party brand and having events not only around the US but internationally as well. I love DJing as well. It’s a further extension of my art and creative process. It keeps me connected to the dance floor and the dance music origins where I started. I love to see people having a good time. I started out as a club kid on the dance floor - vibing with the DJ and sharing that experience. It’s amazing to be able to deliver that to the crowds that dance at my parties. What: Ultra Naté Performance with DJ Matt Moody at the Main Event Party Where: Hotel ZOSO When: Saturday February 23 @ 11:30pm Doors open 9:30pm Tickets: $40 Available at the door. INDESIGN MODERN OR MODERNIST? BY DANN FOLEY Over the last several years I have written multiple times about midcentury design, modern décor and the pilgrimage that has become known as, Modernism Week. I thought that it was about time to discuss the difference between midcentury and modern design, in regard to your home.

navigate by style.

The term “midcentury” has become part of the vernacular and everyday discussion of style. Palm Springs can arguably be considered the nucleus of that style on the west coast, maybe even, the United States. Though most people can recognize elements of midcentury architecture, like butterfly roof lines and architectural block, it is time for a deeper decorative conversation about what makes a home, modern.

• Front Door. An easy fix is a new front door. Consider a door with a window or windows in a midcentury motif. Add a vintage inspired door knob and you have the new Fabulous house on the block!

As my title asks, are you modern or a modernist? What is the difference? In my office we discuss modern design with our clients in terms of modern architecture and modern décor. One is a concept and the other a style of design. Modern Architecture. We approach the décor of a modern architectural design from the perspective of a totally new way of living for our client. Every item, every system, every convenience should be the most innovative on the market. We introduce our client to new ways of living and thinking. When renovating a midcentury modern house, we want to add the latest systems and conveniences within the framework of this classic modern design. Updating vintage modern design to include todays living innovations is the most important part of updating midcentury for us. We would never suggest to our clients that they should live in a house that is a time capsule or museum to a particular style. It is possible to keep the charm of the vintage modern and still bring the systems up to date without imposing on the authenticity of the space and architecture. In fact, some of today’s options for better, more connected living fit in seamlessly to midcentury design and they also are far more energy efficient. Here are some ideas for adding modern architectural elements to your home: • Outdoor light fixtures. There are a plethora of options at your local mega hardware store. For an even bigger selection go online; one of my favorites is www.build.com. You will find the site easy to

38 THESTANDARDPS.COM

• Architectural Block. This might require a permit from your local municipality but, the style you will achieve will far out-weigh the effort and expense.

• Mailbox. I love great design on any mailbox. The internet is a source for modern mailboxes that will make your neighbors slow down as they drive by to check out the cool design. The same goes for your house numbers. Whether they are on your mailbox, base or house, jazz them up with modern digits. Modernist Design. When discussing modern design with clients, it more about individual pieces and an overall feel of the space that is in question. Modernist design can be introduced to any space or home. One of my personal favorite things to do with more traditional space or architecture is to introduce modern or contemporary elements to enliven and update a design. By applying elements of modern design to décor you can make a statement about you personally. This can be as big and bold as a sofa or chandelier or dining table, or it can be more subtle, as in adding modern art to an existing collection or an objet d’art from a midcentury master (a beautiful reproduction is also acceptable). This type of design is often referred to as transitional décor but, I simply refer to it as decorating with personality! Mix those things that you love and find the room of your dreams. There are easy and fun ways of adding modernist design to your home without moving or redecorating. Try some of these: • Fabric. I mention fabric first because most people think you have to buy new furniture to get the look of modern design. Reupholster, slip cover and add pillows. Then you can consider those smaller occasional pieces of modern furniture and accessories that are more accessible and readily available. • Paint. Fast, economical and totally personal, paint can change the look of any room or home. Be adventurous! You don’t have to

do the “standard” modern palette; try a shade or color that tells the world who you are. • Lighting. Just as with the outside of your house, the interior of your home can be enlivened and enlightened with cool modern fixtures. Even the most traditional home can use a modern reading light or table lamp. • Art. This is an area of decoration that I love to blend. If you have all traditional art, try adding a modern piece, painting or photograph. The same works in reverse. If you have all modern art, try adding something traditional. The effect will transform your collection and your room! Truth be told, it is all about creating rooms and homes that we love. Homes that reflect the things that we love and that make us happy. Modern or modernist design and architecture is about expressing your own personal style. Start with the basic understanding of what is modern and then infuse those ideas with what it means for you to be modern. As always, be easy on yourself. Decorating is a process that you are meant to feel your way through. Trust your instincts! Live Well, Dann www.foleystinnette.com DesignerDann @ Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Pinterest
