UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD Bar One’s Legendary Christmas Day – 14th December

Get yourself into the Christmas spirit and trot down to Bar One for food, fun and festive cheer. Doors open at 10am and it’s free to get in, but be prepared to queue if it is going to be as legendary as last year. Free hats, t-shirts and snacks will be given out to those queuing bright and early, making the wait all the more worthwhile! There are amazing drinks prices on offer all day, including half price pints and cider before midday and various other fantastic deals on throughout the day. Entertainment will be provided by X-Factor’s The Risk and a very special Christmas food menu will be available all day long. Get yourself down to Bar One early to make sure you don’t miss out!

ROAR Christmas Party – 14th December

Finish the first semester off with a bang and make sure you buy yourself a ticket for the ROAR Christmas Party. Celebrate the end of term with all your friends before you go home for the holidays, and why not make a whole day and night of it and go to Bar One’s Christmas Day beforehand? Enjoy the usual big tunes and great hits as well as the expected Christmas favourites. Drinks prices will be as reasonable as ever with vodka mixers only £1.50 and two bottles for £3.90. Why not go in fancy dress? There’s bound to be a vast variety of costumes from reindeers to elves to Father Christmas himself. Tickets sold out very quickly last year so make sure you get in there early to avoid disappointment.

Days out to Lincoln and York

December can be a stressful time with deadlines, dreary darkness and dismal weather so why not bring a bit of fun back to the end of term and focus on what December is really all about: Christmas? 4th December brings a trip to the Lincoln Christmas Market and over 200 stalls selling gifts, mulled wine and lots of other Christmassy things. Tickets are only £12 and it is bound to be an enjoyable day full of music and the chance to experience a traditional Victorian style market. There’s also a trip to York on December 10th, with lots of things to see and explore. York is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the UK, boasting outdoor ice skating, Christmas markets and the unmissable Festival of Angels, which shows off a collection of fabulous, magical ice sculptures. Tickets are again £12.

There’s no need to stray away from University this December - with so much going on you’d be a fool to leave the comfort of the union... HALLAM UNIVERSITY Crackered – December 13th

This end of term party at the HUBS is going to be like no other. Crackered is a 100% student Christmas takeover which is bound to be the best place to get yourself excited for Christmas and the best way to spend (potentially) your last night out in Sheffield this year. The night kicks off at 11pm and will be keeping you entertained until the early hours. Student DJs will be bringing you the best in festive tunes, as well as student favourites and chart hits. If this isn’t enough to tempt you already, there is also going to be a snow drop with prizes to be won, as well as a very special Santa’s Grotto.

Christmas Live Lounge – 3rd December

Sheffield’s Childreach Project brings a special seasonal event to Bar Phoenix on December 3rd. The Christmas Live Lounge begins at 7pm, hosting some great artists playing a wide variety of music, including some Christmassy treats. Admission is completely free so get yourself down to the Union bar with your friends to enjoy some free music and what is sure to be a great atmosphere. All for a good cause, after all.

Christmas Fair and Events

A Christmas fair is being held in the HUBS on December 8th, with various stalls offering gift wrapping, Christmas cards, tombolas and other competitions. Food from snacks to Christmas treats will be available, with entertainment provided by the break dancing society, plus retro gaming and Christmas themed screenings. There is also a British Heart Foundation stall and all money raised there will go straight to the charity. For advice on how to avoid debt over Christmas, get down to a workshop in the Canter Building at 10am on the 6th.

JO JO INTERVIEW

Every Weekday From 6am On 105 Capital FM

22.

Capital FM’s most brazen of broadcasting beauties, JoJo, co-presents their prime time breakfast show, Hirsty’s Daily Dose. We persuaded her to take a few minutes away from the mic to discover how she found her voice on the airwaves of Yorkshire’s No.1 hit radio station.

How did you first get into radio DJing?

I hate this question as there’s no short answer, but I will attempt to give you the short version. I had initially trained as an actress at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and after graduation found myself under-whelmed by the acting opportunities in London so I decided to move back to Leeds, whereupon I started working with my friends, hosting club nights. During that time, I sang and talked on a few records, did some voice-over work for Pete Tong’s Essential Selection and got a bit of a reputation for being a girl about town. It was on one of my many nights out that I met a bloke in a gold dress with a handle bar moustache, we got chatting and he told me that he was in charge of specialist music at a brand new radio station, Kiss 105, launching in the New Year. He also said that I had a good voice and that the station was looking for female talent and that I should put myself forward. I did just that and the rest is, as they say, history.

The Breakfast show is probably the most sought after slot on radio – how did you come to be there, alongside Hirsty and Danny?

I totally blagged it! I still can’t quite believe it. I’m about to enter my 15th year of Breakfast radio and nearly ten of them are with Hirsty and Danny as part of Hirsty’s Daily Dose. I guess I’ve maintained my position by keeping relevant and being relatable. The audience has witnessed me growing up, my boyfriend break-ups, my marriage and baby. I’ve pretty much shared everything over the airwaves as we all do on the show, and I think that’s why we have a pretty intimate relationship with our listeners.

How do you deal with the early mornings?

Tea. Tea, and more tea. Early nights and a sense of humour helps too.

Can you sum up your show in three words?

‘Average at best’ ‘Could be better’ ‘A bit s**t’ This is a tricky question, I suppose you could describe it as being down the pub with your mates minus the alcohol… I’m not very good at this three word business am I? Ooo – I’ve thought of another one: ‘Alcohol would help’!

What’s been your most memorable radio moment?

My best moment in radio has to be when we got to broadcast the show from the Maldives. It was hard work but someone had to do it. Another memorable moment was when I was sent to Paris to cover a Janet Jackson concert and do a live phone-in during The Breakfast Show. Imagine the scene, my co-host is broadcasting in Yorkshire and is bigging up the fact that I saw Janet Jackson last night, he then goes on to say, “Let’s get all the backstage gossip from the girl herself live from Paris”, to which I pick up the

phone and say, “Yeah, yeah I’m awake”, clunk! I thought it was my wake up call, but no - I was live on the radio and I hung up the phone. Very rock and roll!

Who has been your favourite guest so far?

JLS! Those boys came into Capital Towers recently and were up for a laugh. We got them to perform at the World’s Smallest Gig at the Trap 2 Academy, capacity one! They played their part perfectly and seemed to have a genuine laugh. If you go to the Hirsty’s Daily Dose page on the Capital website you can check out our behind-the-scenes ‘rockumentary’ and the boys performing at their favourite gig ever!

Are there any celebrities you’d love to meet? Beyonce – the woman is inspirational and pure class.

What’s your favourite track of the moment? Beyonce – Love On Top. Love it, love it, love it.

How would you like your career to progress?

I’m quite happy to continue doing Breakfast radio for as long as I am wanted, as it is the best job in the world. I suppose I’d quite like to appear on Women’s Hour on the BBC, but in an ideal world I would still like to try my hand at being an actor or singing with a jazz band.

For all those aspiring DJs out there, what advice would you give them? Find a proper job! Not really - if you want to be on air you have to get as much experience as possible and make demos to send to would be employers. If you can get your foot in the door with a local radio station and offer your services for free it can sometimes result in a job, but it is a tough industry so I’d have to say perseverance is key.

Where did you wake up this morning? In bed next to my husband.

Who did you last receive a text from? My mother – she wants to meet in town.

Any secret celebrity crushes?

I’d struggle to choose between Rhianna and Beyonce. Having said that I reckon Beyonce would be girlfriend material whereas Rhianna would be filth.

Describe yourself in three words. Loud. Mothering. Peacekeeper.

Any hidden talents?

I can make a fine cup of tea or coffee and I’m a dab hand at making costumes for my five year old, who most recently went to an Amazon rainforest party as an Orang-utan. Skills. Jo-Jo’s dulcet tones appear alongside Hirsty and Danny on Hirsty’s Daily Dose, every weekday from 6am on 105 Capital FM.

STUDENTSTROLOGY Santa have in his sack for you? A tree adorned with sweet tasting Jingle jingle… the bells are ringing with Christmas cheer but what exactly does stocking? candy cane or is all you deserve a lump of blackened coal at the bottom of your and with a slightly eerie twinkle of her bells crawling out from beneath the mistletoe This month our resident Studentstrologist has gotten into the festive sprit, come presented to us her predictions for December. not to take heed of her warnings… Beware, innocent students, the universe works in strange ways and you’d be foolish

My, you’ve gone all out this year, Aquarius. Those carefully chosen gifts you placed beneath the tree will certainly be a surprise to one special person.

After a fiery year you’ve got a special treat waiting for you, Aries. But your ambitious cookery skills leave a little to be desired… no, the flame on the Christmas pudding should not be that high.

Perhaps spending Christmas elsewhere is what the Stars have in mind for you this year, Gemini. Pack up your presents and see where the muses take you.

For once you find yourself to be coupled up, just in time for the festive season. Stock up on the marshmallows, find yourself a roaring fire and snuggle up as the snow starts to fall outside. Perhaps your yuletide wishes will be granted this year, Pisces.

Oh dear, Taurus. Did somebody overindulge on the sweet treats? Never again will you see a chocolate yule log in the same way…

The spirit of Christmas has been kind to you this year, Cancer. Someone will be receiving that furry little something they’ve always wanted…

Tinsel, baubles, fake snow all over the place – you’ve certainly got into the Christmas spirit, Leo. Oops – slight over extravagance on the decoration means not much left in the pot for presents…

Make a special Christmas wish, Libra, and perhaps the fairy on top of the tree will make your dreams come true…

Oops – there we go again, Sagittarius. A few too many pulls on the cracker and tipples on the sherry. Oh dear.

Yes, Virgo. You look very fetching indeed in your festive costume. Father Christmas would be proud.

Well done, Scorpio, you’ve done your research and those special people will be very happy indeed to discover what’s waiting for them beneath the tree. And maybe there’s something hidden away for you too?

Beware of stuffing, Capricorn. The depths of a turkey are a perilous place to be…

Blogged

Sex and the Steel City: “Christmas Coupling” Kate Hobson Christmas. Perhaps the most desirable time of year in which to find oneself happily coupled up in a relationship. But why? What is it about the festive period that causes us to desperately clutch on to any sign of a boyfriend/ girlfriend? Grab some innocent bystander and declare undying love (at least until New Year’s Day, anyway)? Dream of ticking ‘plus one’ on all party invitations? Firstly: If the idea of snuggling up by the fire in the arms of your one true love, the snow quietly falling past the window, slurping hot cocoa as you listen to clichéd, warbling Christmas songs doesn’t appeal, then there is something seriously wrong with you. Don’t pretend you wouldn’t enjoy this. Secondly: Arriving at yet another family Christmas party on your own when even your grandmother has a date is not ideal. Neither is being stood awkwardly on the dancefloor when everyone starts to frantically lock lips as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. Thirdly: Going home for Christmas is all well and good for the first couple of days or so but after that it starts to get a bit tedious. We need something to keep us occupied and what better than a fleeting romance? Fourthly: More presents waiting underneath the tree….? Admit it. We all secretly want a sexy beast to pop out of our cracker. Someone to wile away the freezing nights with. A Christmas shopping buddy. There’s something homely and all-warm-inside about the festive season that causes us to wildly cast aside any notion of independent singledom and leap into the arms of a sweet-as-cinnamon hottie. Better get wishing on that Christmas star then…

Fashionista: “Tights” Sophie Bromley Piazza Gone are the days of using tea or gravy and eyeliner to create the illusion of luxurious tights. However, that doesn’t mean that the nylon leg huggers have got any less desirable. In fact, fashion tights mean huge business and the more popular they become the more weird and wonderful designs we see pounding the catwalks and skipping on to the high street. Despite our beloved Primark churning out like for like copies of on trend, high fashion tights, they don’t always stand the test of time – one rushed toilet trip or any fleeting brush with wicker and the dreams over. All is not lost however. Where there’s a will there’s a way, and if you want to flash some show stopping pins this season without skimping on quality or breaking the bank, here are a few handy tips and pointers: Firstly, don’t write off your local M&S. You might be surprised that the hosiery section that was once your go-to for school socks and woolly tights also stocks designs similar to those seen on the likes of Jessie J. And, lets face it, in M&S we trust. Secondly, if you’re in the mood to rummage, get down to TK Maxx, where shelves overflow with tights, stockings and over the knee socks from high fashion labels such as Emilio Cavallini (favourite of Paloma Faith), Henry Holland and top dog Wolford at deliciously discounted prices. And finally, check out online sites such as mytights.com and tightsplease.co.uk - With free postage and great deals, how could anyone possibly resist a luscious lick of nylon on their skinny pins?

Night Owl: Tuesday Tipples Kirsten Dwight A Tuesday night in Sheffield is all about the cheap drinks and partying. I headed out with a group of mates on a whim, as always is the case on a weeknight, starting off in Revolution. The place to go for cocktails, the staff at Revs are always passionate about mixing up a treat, and although they’re on the pricier side, one of my friends had a Societies Card giving us discounts on drinks. After a juicy cocktail or two, our eyes inevitably wandered over to the selection of vodka shots given prime position on the menu. Given much encouragement and flavour advice from the obliging barman, the five of us went for two racks of five shots, which with the discount card came to just £1 per shot! I went for the Choccy Toffee favour which was surprisingly sweet and not at all wretch inducing, as is usually the case for me.

FOR EXTENDED BLOGS CHECK OUR WEBSITE

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

Next we headed off to Viper Rooms – girls are free before 11.30pm, and with a free glass of champagne you can’t go far wrong. Nice R&B tunes to warm us up, pretty quiet but people started to dribble in as we were leaving at about quarter to 12. Tuesdays are traditionally all about Sheffield Parties’ Billionaire night at Crystal, so off we went. Entry was £2 each, cheaper at the start of the night. The drinks prices are shocking – 75p for a vodka and mixer! God knows how they manage this but it definitely works for us. There were only a few people in there but we sat down and waited for it to warm up, in more ways than one with the air conditioning seemingly set to minus ten… We discovered a Wii set up in the corner so had a quick game of Mario Kart (I won!), then wandered over for a sweet treat from the candyfloss machine randomly set up at the front giving out free candyfloss! The place quickly started to fill up so we got down to the dancefloor and busted out some shapes; chart tunes with a couple of classics thrown in. After being harassed by someone feeling the need to inform me he drove the Subaru on Channel 5’s Police Interceptors (hmm, perhaps) and insisting that I’d had botox (erm… no), it was time to leave. As always, a good night was had by all as Crystal never fails to disappoint on a Tuesday; Bargain drinks, good tunes, nice venue and candyfloss, everything a partygoer could desire.

Capital FM’s Drive Time presenter, Adam O’Neill always has celebs popping in to see him. We find out what Wretch 32 had to say when he came in for a catch up before performing at Sheffield’s Plug. Hi Wretch, how’s the tour gone so far? It’s been incredible, you know, I’ve been having such a ball man, and there’s been so many lovely ladies but I shouldn’t start there because that’s not the highlight! It’s all about the music?! (Laughs) Yeah it’s all about the music, you know, and the ladies and the lighting and the ladies and you know the encore… Well, you’ve got a right little family on tour with you; you’ve got Loick Essien, new girl band, The Duchess - any little scandals going on? No, unfortunately not, I’ve been the king of scandal for a couple of years but it seems like on my own tour I’ve turned into the over-looker, if there is a scandal I’m not even aware! So you’re tucked up in the hotel in bed with a cup of tea by 11.30pm? Yeah a cup of tea and four sugars. Your tour is rounding off what had been a massive year for you? Yeah it’s definitely been such a quick rise, you know, this year everything has happened so fast we haven’t really had time to take everything in, but being on tour now is like the icing on the cake for me. What have been a few of your biggest highlights this year? Performing at Wembley, that was a massive one, running out and performing ‘Unorthodox’ with Example for the Summertime Ball. Another highlight was performing at a lot of the festivals and meeting some great artists that I look up to. It’s weird because a mate of mine, Jessie J, wrote a song where she says, “Every second is a highlight”, and that is literally what it is, every second is a highlight, man.

And you’ve got another single out before Christmas - tell us a little about that? This is my favourite song from my album. It’s called ‘Forgiveness’, and I said to myself that when you make an album and you make a song that you love the most, it’s always good to do it, because you can look back in ten years and be like, yeah man, I really love that song, and I’m glad I went with that choice because there’s so many other songs to choose from. There are some other songs we could choose for strategical reasons but this one is just genuine, I just love the song. Well, maybe Number One for that one as well. You’re involved in the Children In Need project with Gary Barlow as well, what’s that all about? It’s the official song this year, isn’t it? Yeah, it’s the official song. I just remember growing up watching Children In Need and thinking, “Ah man, I wish we could donate some money, Mum”, and we were in a position where you couldn’t. So now to be in a position where I’m actually part of something that I know is definitely going to help, I’m happy and that’s the real reason I’ve done it. Of course, there are some great artists on there, and meeting Gary Barlow was a special thing for me. So how did it work? Did you all get together one day to record one big track or did you all do your bits separately? No, we got in on one big day but it was crazy though! Some people came in but could only stay for an hour, my album release was that day and I had a signing so I had like two hours and mine was tight. In fact it was less than that, I had to be in and out in like an hour and a half, and I had to do the pictures, record the song, it was a bit hectic! Was it nice that all your peers said your were robbed at the MOBO’s for walking away without an award? were you that fussed? Nah, on the day I was fussed but now I’m cool man, I’m all good. Adam felt very sorry for Wretch so he made him a little certificate, for being generally amazing. Wretch promised to frame it and hang it in his toilet. Adam O‘Neill presents 4-7pm on 105 Capital FM. Visit www.capitalfm.com for the latest music news and competitions.

And you got a Number One as well with ‘Don’t Go’ - that must have been like, “wow”? (Laughs) That was like, okay we’re in the building?! Everyone always says that it’s not about chart positions, and I guess it’s not but when you get to Number One that’s a big thing, isn’t it? Yeah, you can’t get any higher than that on that week!

Sheffield student sce This month’s smoking hot picks on the

With a doormat overflowing with takeaway menus, choosing where to order from can be a terrifying prospect. Fear no more – here at The Student we’re no stranger to food by phone so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to review what the city’s eateries have to offer – all in the name of research, of course. What? Devonshire Chippy Where? 280 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 9PS What did we eat? Small fish and chips Fish and chips – a traditional British delicacy. Who can resist the scent of freshly fried batter? Fans of the fish will be happy to learn that city centre favourite, Devonshire Chippy, has branched out to lend their frying expertise to Ecclesall Road. The new branch situated near Marks and Spencer, offers a lip-smacking selection including the classic fish and chips, sausages, kebabs, burgers and pies. I popped in to try some, to see if they truly deserve the title of Sheffield students’ number one! Having gained a loyal following to their branch on Devonshire Street, the new takeaway is already pretty busy – always a good sign. I opted for the classic fish and chips and, after waiting for a couple of minutes for some new chips to be cooked, my meal was wrapped up for me and off I went to enjoy. A chip shop chip is somewhat different to the average French fry – thickly cut with just the right amount of crispness and a touch of sogginess, and Dev Chippy have got it right. The fish was battered nicely, not too thick, without empty spaces void of fish. The fish itself was soft and fresh – with a good dose of salt and vinegar, Devonshire Chippy have got this Brit favourite down to a T.

FRESHERS

UNCOVERED

Freshers Week: seven filled with days of unadulterated mayhem, And plenty of moments we’d all like to forget about, placing them in the “Honestly We Were Innocent Young Freshers And Didn’t Know What We Were Doing” folder. But here at The Student, we love a bit of embarrassment, So we’ve delved into the freshers files and persuaded some shameful students to reveal all.

Beach Party

54.

My flat mates and I had decided to hit up the Beach Party night at the Union. We all dug out some beach babe outfits and tropical accessories and regrouped in the kitchen for some pre-party drinks. Things were going so well until I had one too many shots and was soon whacking on my favourite Steps tune and telling everyone that the dance move I was doing were, ‘just like they do in the video.’ I never lived it down. Not to mention the fact that I tripped up some stairs en route to the Union, resulting in two grazed knees - the innuendos went on for months. Sophie Bromley-Piazza

FlamMable Goth

Almost every Fresher goes to a School Disco night. In Sheffield, it’s probably at Corp, but for me it was the SU. After two days of disappointment at my uncooperative flatmates and quite possibly the worst birthday in the history of University life, I’d managed to find a couple of people who could not only understand my Yorkshire accent, but also happened to be on my course. Perhaps the excitable goth girl and Barry Manilow’s teenage twin double weren’t the people I’d normally choose to spend my time with, but beggars can’t be choosers and we ended up being good friends. At the time though, I didn’t know that, So when I agreed to dress up as a schoolgirl and try absinthe in the ‘traditional’ way, I was a little wary. I turned up at Goth Girl’s flat, fishnets on, tie tied sort of - only to find the theme had changed. Don’t ask me what it was, but apparently it involved a lot of UV body paint and her rowdy flatmates soon made me regret choosing the shortest of short skirts and exposing quite so much, ahem, flesh. It wasn’t long before the absinthe came out. Now if you’ve never had absinthe it involves sugar cubes - the kind that students just don’t have - and fire. Did I mentioned Goth Girl’s hair looked highly flammable? You can imagine what happened. Wasted, crying with laughter, her fringe caught fire as she tried to simultaneously keep down the absinthe and not spray us all with soggy sugar. It was lucky there were so many damp tea towels around really. Anonymous

Lap Em As a second year, I didn’t go quite as mental as I had done when I was a fresh-faced fresher, but my flatmates and I made sure that we were all available for a night out that we had all really loved the previous year; the Uni vs Hallam neon barcrawl. We got ourselves ready, cut up our unflattering t-shirts and streaked our faces with neon face paint. The night was fantastic - until we got to Embrace…

Somehow we managed to get caught up in a massive crush of people trying to meet the lads from Geordie Shore. My friend got pulled onto the stage and I stealthily slipped through the boisterous crowd to try to see what she was doing: innocently taking part in a limbo competition. Next moment I was being thrust onto the stage by the Embrace staff and one bouncer said to me swiftly, “You Hallam or Uni?” Without a second thought I replied quickly with “Uni” and was then dragged onto the platform. Unbeknownst to me at the time I was about to be entered into a ‘lap dancing’ contest. A girl from Hallam and myself were placed in front of the Geordie guys and the music began to play. I watched the girl from Hallam grind up against the boys and perform some quite convincing lap dancing moves; I had to do something, I couldn’t just stand there. After I few moments I turned to the boys and went up to each of them individually shaking their hands, even stopping to have a little chat with a few of them and then departing from the stage shortly afterwards. My friends thought that this was absolutely hilarious and wouldn’t stop laughing and saying that the whole thing was ‘so me’. The next day a friend from my course said to me, “I didn’t know that you were a lap dancer?” I retorted with, “Well, I clearly wasn’t, was I?”. And I think that is something that everyone who was there that night can agree on. Lianne Williams

FLICKS TAKE AN INSIGHT INTO THE THOUGHTS OF THE STUDENT MAGAZINE CRITICS AS THEY PICK AND PROD TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE LATEST RELEASES.

Arthur Christmas Director Sarah Smith (Cert. U) So how exactly does Santa manage to deliver all those presents in one night? If we’re to believe Arthur Christmas, with the help of a covert elf army, all manner of hi-tech gadgetry and a spacecraft that would put the USS Enterprise to shame. Santa’s business-savvy son Steve is the brains behind this year’s operation, whilst his bumbling sibling Arthur is relegated to answering children’s Christmas letters. When Arthur learns that one present hasn’t been delivered, he takes it upon himself to ensure that no child is left unhappy come Christmas morning. This latest offering from Aardman Studios, the brains behind Wallace and Gromit, owes a great deal to the great Raymond Briggs; like The Snowman, Arthur Christmas revels in a child-like sense of wonder and excitement at the festive season, and, like Briggs’ Father Christmas, the film is imbued with a wholly British wit, much of which stems from the dysfunctional dynamic of the Christmas family, usually spearheaded by cranky patriarch Grandsanta. Restraint is something Aardman excels in, and with the exception of an adrenalin-fuelled opening sequence the feature relies upon its wonderful, fully formed characters to carry the story. Although Arthur Christmas is perhaps a little too slow for the very young, it has enough warmth, heart and humour to cement its position in the Pantheon of festive favourites.

FLICKS The Rum Diary Director Bruce Robinson (Cert. 15) Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) is a freelance journalist, disillusioned with his native New York he travels to Puerto Rico to write for failing newspaper, The San Juan Star. Yearning to find his voice as a writer, Kemp fears the nights he spends binging on rum with his flatmate Bob Sala are a self-destructive path to journalistic mediocrity. To further complicate matters, our protagonist is offered a proposition by wealthy businessman, Sanderson, which although lucrative, would require dangerous moral compromise. One of Hunter S Thompson’s earliest novels, The Rum Dairy remains something of a curio in his cannon; not yet had he perfected the maniacal semi-autobiography that became his trademark, this is all too clear in an adaptation of an author whose work doesn’t lend itself to film at the best of times. The Rum Diary is being marketed as a kind of spiritual prequel to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it isn’t; where Gillingham took Thompson’s trippy tale to the extreme, here Bruce Robinson downplays the excess in an attempt to create something more old-fashioned. While the film is visually striking and Depp once again delivers a perfect impersonation of a thinly veiled Hunter Thompson, without the great man’s words to add a paranoid excitement to the most trivial occurrences, it veers a little too close to blandness.

Snowtown Director Justin Kurzel (Cert. 18) This first feature film from director Justin Kurzel introduces us to Jamie, a disaffected sixteen year old living with his mother and two younger brothers in a grey, derelict northern suburb of Adelaide, Australia. Enter into Adelaide the charismatic John, and so into Jamie’s life, seeming to offer some paternal stability into his schizophrenic existence. As John grows from protector to mentor, Jamie finds himself increasingly drawn into a dark, violent world of homophobia, manipulation, bigotry and malice; before long Jamie is acting as an accomplice to John Bunting, Australia’s most notorious serial killer. The Australian film industry can be a brave and bold beast; anyone who has seen the stunning documentary Not Quite Hollywood will know the importance of exploitation flicks in the growth of the nation’s cinema; the Bunting murders seem a topic ripe for such treatment. While it would be easy for Snowtown to tread the same waters as the similarly ‘based on real events’ Wolf Creek, it instead excels as perhaps the most significant film to emerge from down-under since Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures. Kurzel wrings out sterling performances from a cast of mostly unknowns, his camera graces the film with an uncompromising realism. Snowtown is an incredibly difficult watch, genuinely disturbing and relentlessly bleak, it is however, one of the most important films of the year.

BEATS GET YOUR EARS WAGGING WITH OUR THREE LATEST ALBUM REVIEWS AND THE DIRTY DOWNLOADS SECTION FOR ALL THOSE BASS HEAVY RAVERS OUT THERE.

Florence + The Machine ‘Ceremonials’ ~

‘Ceremonials’ is the follow-up album to ‘Lungs’ – the highly acclaimed debut album from Florence and the Machine. Florence Welch proves her worth and credibility as a musician here, with an album that showcases not only her powerful voice but also her ability to write strong melodies, infectious hooks and uplifting sound-scapes. Lyrically, the album continues in the same vein as ‘Lungs’, as Welch paints vivid, fantastical pictures and tells stories that invite you for 56 minutes into her world of ghosts, exorcism, devils and tales of love. The rest of the album, particularly ‘No Light, No Light’, only reinforces the feeling that Welch has well and truly earned her place, not only in the charts but also in the musical history books as one of the most talented songwriters and female singers to come out of Britain in a long time.

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

Rihanna ‘Talk That Talk’ ~

Rihanna takes her sixth hit at the UK album charts with ‘Talk That Talk’ – a step towards music with more of a classic club feel than previous albums. Collaboration with Calvin Harris, ‘We Found Love’, has received the unsurprising amount of radio airplay that could only be expected from a lead single of the mega-star. ‘Drunk On Love’ samples The XX’s ‘Intro’, which seems lazy as nothing is really achieved by doing this except possibly giving Rihanna’s writers a bit of a rest. Perhaps they were too busy putting their efforts into the continuation of the seemingly ongoing theme (especially of recent years) of filthy lyrics that continue to shock, or at least trigger the shaking of a few heads. Signature ‘filthy’ track from this collection of songs comes in the form of ‘Cockiness (Love It)’, which ensures exclusion from the potential singles list (although these days you wouldn’t put money on it).

Nickelback ‘Here and Now’ ~

‘Noughties’ rockers, Nickelback, return with their first album for three years and, in terms of musical direction, generally stick to the ethos of, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. As a fan, this is tremendously pleasing – but I can imagine that as an innocent chart-absorbing bystander you might be fairly bored with the similar vein in which Nickelback’s music has run throughout previous years, and might even argue that they have possibly now recycled some of the riffs a few too many times. Nickelback are also generally sticking to their comfort zone lyrically with the usual theme of going-to-a-bar/drinking/fighting-over-a-girl/lamenting-angrily-over-anex-girlfriend scenario – but it works. The band also stay––––– true to their soft-spot for the occasional very, very cheesy ballad – the title of the track ‘Lullaby’ says it all. It’s not just a one off: ‘Trying Not To Love You’ and ‘Holding Onto Heaven’ fit the same mould. The cheese continues with final track ‘Don’t Ever Let It End’, including ground-breaking lyrics such as: “I know you feel the same way, because you told me drunk on your birthday”.

///////////////////////////

Sarah Mac How would you describe your style of music? My music is a complete reflection of my surroundings, either at the time or in the past. Each song has its own personality. I’m a Pisces, easily influenced and inspired by life in general, that comes through in the lyrics. Musically, it’s a Carole King, Elton John, Dusty Springfield and Zero 7 hot pot. Tell us something exciting about yourself. It’s hard to choose my favourite animal. At home I’ve got three Springer spaniels, two cats and two chickens. I like cows though. I proper want a cow... Anyway, best animal? My dog, Emmie. She’s beautiful and will always be my best friend, wherever I go. She loves house music, too. Where’s your favourite gig been so far? This year’s Tramlines was a good’un. I had four gigs on the Saturday, my favourite one at the library theatre, it ticked all the boxes; Lovely sunny day, great sound, absolutely packed out and an insanely long line of fans waiting for me to sign their copies of the EP! Unbelievable. What or who inspired you to start making music? I didn’t start writing my own lyrics until I was about 18. That’s the time I got obscenely fed up of A Levels, went to study music at Barnsley College, met loads of crazy (but lovely) mates, joined a band and got myself planted into the Sheffield music scene. It was my Dad who inspired me to try and write my own songs and begin a solo career. He encouraged me to engage with people through song, ‘cause neither of us are very good at conversation. Although it seems I’m quite reserved and subdued sometimes, I like people to feel as though they know me, so I sing to them. My mum inspired me to play the piano. I remember listening to her play sonatas when I was really young and thinking, “yeah, I can do that!” and then going and jumping up and down on the keys, playing it with my nose, kid stuff, until she got sick of it and sent me for lessons. I soon got the hang of it. So, I’ve got my parents to thank for everything. Truly inspiring people.
