What A Gwan?

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD Tuesday Club Presents Valve Sound System

This event is perfect for those of you who love dubstep and drum and bass, especially if you like to hear it played very, very loud. Valve is a legendary night which doesn’t come around very often so make sure you don’t miss out. There is a fantastic line up, including Magnetic Man’s BENGA and headliners will start from 10pm so make sure you don’t turn up too late. Tickets are quite pricey at £18.70 but it’s bound to be a night to remember and get your ticket early as this event will definitely sell out.

Give It A Go Events for March

Try something new this March and take part in one of the many classes and events put on by Give it a Go. There are so many different activities on offer from pizza-making to preparing cocktails. There are trips being organised to visit Chester and also the Peak District, which you should definitely visit at some point during your time in Sheffield. Bored of the gym and want to try a new form of exercise? Why not give salsa dancing a go? And if you’re not much of a dancer there are karate and akido classes too. Lots of new activities to try out and all reasonably priced.

Get Yourself Ready For Easter

Easter egg hunts don’t have to be just for kids, so get yourself down to the union on Saturday 17th March and prepare to search! Tickets are priced at only £2.20, so hopefully you will find enough chocolate to make back your money and more. All profits will be donated to UNICEF so embrace eating chocolate for a good cause. If this isn’t enough to fulfil your need for chocolate then go along to a workshop on the 24th, teaching you how to make your own Easter eggs and decorate them too.

The Student Comedy Festival 23rd-25th March 2012

The fourth Sheffield Student Comedy Festival will be held over the weekend of the 23rd-25th March and wristbands can be exchanged at the union beforehand. Come along and enjoy some of the best student comedy around; also a great opportunity to have a laugh and a few drinks with your friends. There will be all sorts of different comedy acts, including the brilliant improvised troupe, The Shrimps. This year all the money raised will be donated to the local charity St. Luke’s Hospice.

There’s no need to stray away from University this March - with so much going on you’d be a fool to leave the comfort of the union...

Elections for Student Officers

It’s that time again. It is time to vote for who you want to represent your union next year. Voting officially opens online on the 2nd March and you have until the 8th March to make your decisions. This doesn’t give you that long so make sure you start really thinking about who you think will be best for the job. If you are unsure about how the voting works then don’t worry, you will get an email on the 2nd to your university account, explaining how it all works so all will become clear. Results will be announced on the 9th in Bar Phoenix from 7.30pm and admission is free.

National Student Money Week

National Student Money Week will take place from Monday 12th March until Friday 16th in your student union. The whole week is dedicated to money and how students can learn how to look after theirs and use it carefully. Look forward to information on lots of great savings, as well as plenty of free advice on how best to manage your money whilst you are a student. There will be a budgeting clinic, an amazing savings workshop, information on how to reduce debt and part time work opportunities. This event is a must for any student who feels like they sometimes aren’t the best with their money.

Varsity

Varsity, the annual sporting competition between Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield will take place this year between the 21st and 28th March. This celebration of Sheffield sport helps to showcase many of the great sporting facilities we have in our city and also helps to raise the bar for University sport. The various sporting events between the two universities will take place in many different venues around Sheffield. Are you a good runner? Then why not take part in the 10k run that starts at Don Valley Stadium on the 25th, raising money for charity and also a great chance to get yourself fit? Get training now!

DJ Takeovers Every Friday at Bar Phoenix

Every Friday from 8pm the DJ society takes over Bar Phoenix, showing off the best student talent and up and coming DJs. It’s always bound to be a great night and you never know, some of these DJs could even become a big deal one day. Even if you aren’t going for the DJs then get yourself down there for the great cocktail offers with £10 fishbowls, pitchers from only £5 and cocktail glasses from £3. If you aren’t in the mood for cocktails then all bombs are three for £5 all night. What more could you want?

Always brimming with news from all the hot celebrities, this month Capital FM’s Adam O’Neill caught up with drum and bass supremo, DJ Fresh. Congratulations on your number one with ‘Hot Right Now’!

I’m really, really chuffed and really excited; it’s always been a dream for a drum and bass track to get to Number One. It just goes to show that British music is changing so much, it’s really exciting to be a part of that.

It must be nice that ‘Hot Right Now’ has been a success after ‘Louder’… you’re not going to be a one hit wonder!

(Laughs) Yeah! A lot of people in the industry said to me, ‘It’s drum and bass, everyone knows dubstep’s been blowing up, so be prepared for it to not be received so well’, so it’s good to see that it’s loved.

So you’re on the phone from the studio, taking a break from finishing the album. What can we expect from it?

I guess more of the same, it’s all different singers, different songs, but it’s my kind of sound, I can’t really describe it. I’m really buzzed about it – the next song, and I can’t talk about it right now, is something I’m really excited by, more excited than I was by ‘Hot Right Now’.

Some big collaborations lined up?

Potentially something with a big American artist, he’s a cool guy and I keep seeing him and we keep talking about it so hopefully it will happen.

How about something with Adele? She’s done the sad stuff - her vocal and something from you would be amazing! I always think with people like Adele, who is so talented.that I wouldn’t want to even approach them in case they were like, “Who’s DJ Fresh?”!

Don’t get all shy now! Believe in yourself, dude! You’re going on tour again in May?

Yeah – doing a load of small venues, I love it, the vibes are amazing. I love capturing the energy and I’m doing all the festivals over the summer. My sets are quite manic, I play really high energy stuff and I love the reaction from people, it’s pretty cool.

See you on the tour – thanks for chatting! No worries, thanks for the support!

ST PATRICK’S DAY

March 17th is fast approaching and you know what that means: St. Patrick’s Day, the most profound celebration of any of the patron saints, is just around the corner! It has been a religious holiday in Ireland for over a thousand years, commemorating Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. From 1995 the Irish government began a national campaign to use St. Patrick’s Day as an opportunity to drive tourism and showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Today, St. Patrick’s Day is just as popular in the UK as it is in Ireland!

Party Time

.

Look out for announcements of the University of Sheffield’s annual St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Bar One, and Sheffield Hallam’s party at the HUBS. Expect drink deals (especially on Guinness, as it should be), freebies like hats and shirts, Irish karaoke and live music, quizzes and food. Keep checking both websites for updates.

.

A night of Irish songs from The Curragh Sons comes to The Common Room, University House at University of Sheffield from 7.30pm on St Paddy’s Day. Playing all the favourites including Galway Girl, Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore and Whiskey In The Jar, a delicious pre-show Irish supper is also available, so book early to avoid disappointment!

.

Every year a huge tent pops up at the top of Fargate, filled with St Patrick’s festivities and all the Guinness you could ever wish for. As the day falls on a Saturday this year, it looks like a party-filled weekend is on the cards!

STUDENTSTROLOGY have in store for you? Our resident Studentstrologist has snuck March is here meaning 2012 is well underway – but what will the coming monthwinking stars above to determine whether March will be a month out in the dead of night, whipped out her mystical moon dust and consulted thestore so this month our racy reader of the skies has focused on to remember… or forget. The stars always know what romantic surprises lie in some interesting relationship advice. not to take heed of her warnings… Beware, innocent students, the universe works in strange ways and you’d be foolish

Pick up the phone and make that call, Aquarius. Or perhaps a cheeky little Facebook message is the way to go?

Ah – the thrill of the chase. Being with you is something of a challenge, Aries, yet you wonder why all your relationships end in drama? Don’t look for trouble in paradise and things should go much more smoothly.

Not everyone is as intelligent as you, Gemini. A bit of raw passion would be the perfect way to build bridges.

Pisces! You are such an intriguing individual. Some might find this annoying however, so maybe for once actually say what you mean?

Ooh you raging bull, you. Animalistic and physical, riding solo is really not ideal for you. Keep enjoying yourself and the right person will come along in due course.

Sensitive and sweet are two words to describe you, Cancer! But look out for someone who’s a little bit meaner than you for a perfect match this month.

Careful, Leo. Too much jealousy will not make you popular.

Ooh – selfish, selfish, Sagittarius. If you wish to receive, you have to give.

www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

How has your life been after winning X Factor? Amazing, I’ve been trying for so long to break onto the music scene, like a decade and now I’m writing and recording, it’s amazing. I don’t want to dwell on the X Factor thing but are you wanting to move away from that? Well it takes time to move away from it, Will Young has done it after ten years, Leona won six or seven years ago? Was it in 2003 she won? But a lot of people will know me as that guy off X Factor. Obviously you owe a lot to X Factor though of course, that’s what put you in the spotlight… Oh yes of course, the media are always trying to push me into saying I hate X Factor or something! But that’s what got me out there so of course I’m grateful. You’ve been recording your album for the last four months – have you written much of your own material? Yeah, I’ve done something on nearly all the tracks, Gary Barlow wrote one, I’ve been in the studio recording. So the songs relate to you and your own experiences? Yes absolutely, I get onto the stage and pour my heart out! Do you find you can inject more emotion into songs you’ve written yourself? Yes, you can’t put real emotion into songs that you can’t relate to. You’ve been working on your vocals for this album – has it been difficult to produce a smoother vocal? Well towards the end of X Factor I was suffering from laryngitis and bronchitis, I was really ill which made my voice sound rough. But now I’ve fully healed and on good form so my voice is much better. Your first tour starts on the 28th February – are you feeling ready and prepared for this? Mentally yes, physically no! I need to get working out and get in shape, it’s going to be intense with two shows in a day. Manchester Apollo though, I’m looking forward to that. What can we expect to see from your tour? There’s some surprises in store, it will be a great watch, and there’s an acoustic section which fans love, something for everyone really. Is it different performing in your own show rather than as part of X Factor? It feels like it did before X Factor. Is it a shock to see so many people loving you and your music, coming to see you? It’s great, really humbling to see people coming to see me perform.

QUESTIONS ////////////////////////

QUICK FIRE

Your career started with a Christmas Number One – which is amazing in itself -how would you like your career to progress over the next few years? Yes, well I’d like to release an album every year, and grow as an artist really.

Where did you wake up this morning? In my bed. Any secret celebrity crushes? Danni Minogue. Describe yourself in three words. Kind, disorganised and… disassociated! Any hidden talents? I can make this sound… and I can snowboard. If you were a pizza, what would be your topping? Ham. And olives. www.sheffieldstudent.co.uk

Man, I Feel Like A Woman By Kate Hobson / www.fumblesandroses.wordpress.com Published March 2012 Sometimes I feel as though I react like a typical man. Which is no mean feat, you understand, as I am, in fact, a woman. While many men find themselves being hounded by desperate women begging for commitment, in my case I find the tables turn, leaving myself running away from relationship-hungry males. On countless occasions I’ve been the one dodging texts and calls, tactfully changing the subject whenever the suggestion of embarking on a more permanent relationship comes up. As far as I’m concerned, why fix something when it ain’t broke? There we were, happily sailing along in a commitment-free, harmless bit of fun when – boom. ‘Shall we make this official?’ Those words are, in essence, the death certificate for any budding romance in my eyes. Call me a commitment phobe, but I much prefer to be simply ‘seeing’ someone. Unfortunately, this need for an escape route leads to many broken hearts along the way; the cliché of ‘playing hard to get’ does truly work, it seems; whilst I remain enjoying yet separate to any relationship the other half seems to be helpless in falling for my unintentional charms. Cue tears and tantrums aplenty for them when I get bored. Sorry boys, but I need a real man and, as they say, if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Talking Trousers By Sophie Bromley-Piazza Published March 2012 Fingers crossed that the cold snap, or cold smack in the face, is over and we can start turning our attention towards a spring that couldn’t come soon enough. For a quick update to your wardrobe in the season and style stakes, bag a pair of what I like to think of as ‘wonder trousers’. In shops and magazines, they are more commonly known as cigarette trousers, peg leg or tapered. All a variation on the same thing, these ankle length, tailored trousers are a timeless classic and can subtly add some serious fashion clout to your look. A staple piece of Parisian chic, there’s nothing new about a narrow trouser, but this spring/summer offering is set to be the best yet. To bring this look bang up to date, fashion houses are putting them out in crazy florals, psychedelic kaleidoscopes and 60’s monochrome style, which means there is a flattering pair out there for all shapes and sizes. Dress them up with heels and a great top, or go retro pin up with a cropped tee and ballet pumps. For a formal, elegant look throw a boyfriend blazer over the top in a glossy, glamorous fabric. With such a clean-cut look on bottom, you can really go anywhere on top. From chunky knit to barely there chemise, heavy lace to punk band t-shirts, your top might stand out but your trousers are doing all the talking.

Ciao Capello By Tom Hardy Published March 2012 The major talking point in the past month is obvious – the resignation of a certain England manager. I still think there’s more to this story than meets the eye - it all seems a bit fishy. Hours after Harry Redknapp was found ‘not guilty’ for tax evasion charges, Fabio Capello waved goodbye to the Three Lions, despite having eased them into the Euro’s this summer. Capello took the hot seat at the start of 2008, his first international job. He faced opposition from the off, particularly as his English was pretty poor – a quality one would imagine being considerably vital when managing an English team. Despite a lot of criticism during his time as manager however, the Italian left with the highest win percentage of any other previous gaffer. His reason for resigning is believed to be linked to the manner in which the FA dealt with the whole ‘John Terry saga’. If Redknapp does get the job (which seems inevitable), he isn’t expected to start until after Euro 2012. Perhaps the FA already has someone lined up, but for now it’s “Ciao Capello”!

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs By Laura Keen Published March 2012 After what can only be described as a messy festive period, I made a resolution to get back on the straight and narrow and only go out once a week. This week we decided on Shuffle presents TEED at Plug - with cheap drinks and quality music, it’s an ideal escape for students. Starting early at Bungalows and Bears, we got the Fruli in and sat romancing about the night ahead. After reflecting on previous weeks, we decided to avoid a heavy pre-session, So we headed back, quick change, a few vodkas and onwards to our destination. With their usual £2.50 drinks, we stocked up and headed straight for the main room. Resident DJs Emilio Arciello and Squarehead were warming up, treating us to their latest concoction of funky house and electro. With Squarehead introducing his recently released EP, “Keep It Moving”, the early revellers were certainly given a taster of the housey vibes that lay ahead. After a strong two hour set, we were introduced to TEED’s support act, Stay+. With their unique live approach to house music, loosely labelled “a band”, Stay+ were a diverse intro to TEED’s phenomenal yet bizarre performance. Yes, performance. TEED entered wearing a full Indian Head dress, closely followed by his Dancing Dinosaurs. He lifted the roof with an epic infusion of house and electro. With a bit of everything at all the right times, it is clear to see why Orlando is such a successful producer and performer. Describing his beats as “just dance music at the end of the day”, it’s compelling to see such a laidback, effortless representation of music, exactly how it should be. After dropping HUGE remixes from Katy Perry and Professor Green, it became clear this was yet another example of Shuffle bringing the vibes on a Saturday night.

And it would seem that my resolution-inspired, down-sized pre drinking session had paid off. All my contemporaries were still in tow, last month’s casualty was still conscious. And so we retired, whilst we were still winning.

SNEAK PEEK

Sheffield student scene. This month’s smoking hot picks on the

TAKEAWAY REVIEW With a doormat overloaded with takeaway menus, choosing where to order from can be a terrifying prospect. Fear no more – here at The Student we’re no stranger to food by phone so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to review what the city’s eateries have to offer – all in the name of research, of course. What? McDonald’s Where? 20-22 High Street, S1 2GE/ Granville Square, S2 2TP/ Meadowhall Retail Park, S9 2YZ/ The Oasis, Meadowhall, S9 1EP What did we eat? 6 Chicken McNuggets, Medium Fries, 6 Onion Rings You’re never far from a McDonald’s and a feast of fries can be exactly what you need after slaving away at a particularly monotonous essay. Everyone’s got a favourite and ours is McNuggets. They have improved somewhat over the last few years – no longer a mangle of meat but approved chicken breast, containing 36% less salt than in 2003. The batter is crisp and perfectly cooked, perhaps a little bit bland on its own but lip-smackingly good dipped in BBQ sauce. McDonald’s certainly know how to make a good chip, with their fries easily being the best of all the fast food establishments. Not too soggy and not too crisp, skinny and fluffy inside with a sprinkling of salt on the outside. I was lucky enough to get a good batch; freshly cooked and toasty warm. McD’s always run a limited edition side which changes every few months; this time it was onion rings. In a word; unimpressive. The batter was loosely held around the onion, resembling salted cardboard. Chewy and flavourless. Apart from that, another enjoyable visit to Maccy’s – nothing really changes on each visit but nothing really needs to.

The Results

Now add up your symptoms (mostly As, Bs or Cs) and read your personalised nugget of advice to uncover your one true love, thanks to The Student’s very own Date Doctor.

Mostly As

You’re a bit of a lad/ lass who loves a wild night out with their mates. An earth-shattering romance isn’t really up your street, preferring instead to have an easy booty call when it suits you. You’ve probably been accused of being a love rat/ player/ heartbreaker a few times by a blown-off ex but you never get too attached to be too bothered. There is someone out there for you though, even if you’re not looking for it. Watch out for the opposite sex version of yourself and you could meet your match – player vs fellow player = draw.

8.When would it be appropriate for you to meet each others’ parents? A – Never – it’s not like we’re

going to get married

B – Whenever, it doesn’t re-

ally bother me

C – When we’ve been going

out properly for about a year

Mostly Bs

Mostly Cs

Our advice to you is, to put it bluntly, grow some balls. Take a hold of your own life and sort it out – if you like someone then do something about it. A stronger character than you will walk all over you so try and pick someone similar to yourself, who you feel comfortable enough with to discuss what you both want to do together. Love will blossom as you grow together.

The Date Doctors suggest that to find the hottie of your dreams you should hang about in the sorts of places the aforementioned hottie would be at large. Think contemporary wine bars, expensive restaurants and BMW showrooms. Dress to impress and flirt ‘til you go blue in the face, you little charmer.

We wouldn’t say you’re the ultimate lady/ man killer as you’re not the most confident when it comes to love and mostly find yourself swept along with whatever the other half wants to do. You can take it or leave it, as if something happens which you’re not 100% happy with you won’t say anything and just deal with it.

Romance is certainly what rocks your world. You love the security of a relationship and hate being alone and single. You’d much rather be snuggled up in bed with your love-bug than out on the pull with your tipsy mates, but have high standards and need to be wined and dined by a very eligible gentleman/ lady before giving yourself completely to them.

BEATS GET YOUR EARS WAGGING WITH OUR THREE LATEST ALBUM REVIEWS AND THE DIRTY DOWNLOADS SECTION FOR ALL THOSE BASS HEAVY RAVERS OUT THERE.

InMe ‘The Pride’ ~

Gotye ‘Making Mirrors’ ~

By releasing The Pride unconventionally - asking fans to pledge their pennies in exchange for an early glimpse of the album and other band-related items, with part of the funds going towards charity - InMe have created the necessary buzz around their latest release to get people interested again. Although this band has always had a fiercely loyal following, they haven’t made a splash on the chart scene since the early ‘00s, nor the festival scene for a couple of years. However, they soldier on with driven determination and resilience, bringing to the table one of their strongest albums yet. They don’t mess about - opening track ‘Reverie Shores’ contains a suitably screaming, anthemic chorus fit to kickstart an album full of raw and raging emotional outpour interspersed with the delicate and melodic elements that set InMe apart from other alternative metal bands of their breed. The Pride contains more progressive injections than previous albums, and although InMe have stayed faithful to the sound they are comfortable with, they do throw in curveballs such as the Enter Shikari-esque synth parts in ‘Moonlit Seabed’. Lead vocals, provided by Dave McPherson, are amazing and as powerful as ever throughout. Definitely an album that the fans will, and already seem to, love – but also a great place to start if you wanted to dip your toe into the musical pool of InMe’s discography.

Although having been released in many countries since as early as August 2011, Making Mirrors hit the UK this February following the worldwide explosion of inescapable lead single ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ (featuring New Zealand singer-songwriter Kimbra) – the bittersweet belter of the moment, inevitably set to become break-up anthem of the decade.

(UK Release Date: 19th February 2012)

Gotye, Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Wally De Backer, seems to have found the rare winning combination of songwriting skills enabling creation of such infectious and mass-relatable pop music as ‘Somebody…’, stunning, goosebump-inducing vocal talent and the ability to create songs and soundscapes with absolutely spot-on musical arrangements and production. No two tracks on Making Mirrors are the same – the title track opens the album with ambience, while upbeat and uplifting Motown-feel ‘I Feel Better’ injects a welcome (although almost uncomfortably out of place) dose of positivity into proceedings – as does ‘In Your Light’ (a track more than a little bit similar to George Michael’s ‘Faith’). Technology-heavy ‘State of The Art’ depicts and exploits De Backer’s mixed views on music technology and its current role in our lives. Closing track ‘Bronte’ rounds off the album with its soft acoustic sound and tender lyrics.

(UK Release Date: 13th February 2012)

Emeli Sandé ‘Our Version of Events ’ ~ After launching head-first into 2012 by achieving an immediate UK Number 1 with her debut album and winning the BRIT Awards 2012 Critics Choice Award - following in the footsteps of Adele, Florence and The Machine and Jessie J – the future currently looks very bright for Scottish singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé. Unfortunately, said album Our Version of Events may well let her down. Much of the album sounds old-fashioned in production and this takes away from the flashes of decent song-writing that Sandé displays throughout. Although she is already an accomplished songwriter, having written for artists such as Professor Green, Cheryl Cole and Tinie Tempah, much of this album feels like no more than simply ‘filler’ around a few stand-out tracks. However, amongst the mediocrity lie some notable rays of hope: first singles from the album ‘Heaven’ (radio-friendly croon-along hit with a 90s club feel) and ‘Daddy’ (similar effort featuring up-and-coming producer Naughty Boy) both stand out as individual and exciting tracks in the current popular music scene and highlight Sandé’s vocal talent and songwriting prowess. Third single ‘Next To Me’ is less enthralling – its repetitive lyrics, structure and melody make it 3 minutes and 17 seconds of banal musical chewing gum which would have been best left on the recording studio floor at its demo stage. It’s a shame, as Sandé is clearly talented – she perhaps just needs to find her direction as an artist in her own right.

(UK Release Date: 13th February 2012)

Never Cry Wolf For those people out there who don’t know who ‘Never Cry Wolf ’ are, how would you describe your style of music? Somewhere along the lines of hardcore/metal, Comeback kid/The Ghost Inside.

Tell us something exciting about the band?

We’ve got new merch out right now, check that on http://nevercrywolf.bigcartel.com/.

I heard you have a real life live in dwarf playing drums? What do you feed him? I don’t know if he is a dwarf but he’s definately small, I believe he likes lembas bread? (laughs)

Where is your Dream location to play? We would love to play Download Festival.

Any plans for the upcoming Tramlines Festival? Or are you guys too cool for that?

We don’t know of any plans yet, but would definitely love to play it - anything to do with our home city is a bonus!

Describe ‘Never Cry Wolf ’ in three words. Energetic, Mosh and Lads.

Where is your next gig going to be held? I’ve currently seen and supported ‘Never Cry Wolfs’. Your first official music video, how did that come around? And for all those people out there wanting to make the next move what do you suggest is the best plan? How did you guys go from playing each week in a room near Tom Dip Cafe to having your own music video and touring? Yes that is correct, basically we wanted to push for this year’s Red Bull Bedroom Jam and to do so you need to have something to put on their website. So instead of doing something half arsed we wanted to make something which we were happy with and all in all looked good. So we rang our friend Jordan Green who is a top lad and he came down to Sheffield and shot it for us in a day! http://www.facebook.com/jordangreenphoto. Perseverance is key.

Finally, how many times do you like your fish fried? Usually 5 but 6 on a good day.

FLICKS The Muppets Director James Bobbin (Cert. U) After years in the spotlight, The Muppets have gone their separate ways; Kermit lives alone in his Hollywood mansion, Gonzo is now a high-end plumber, Fozzie performs alongside a ramshackle tribute-act to his former colleagues, The Moopets, while Miss Piggy has taken up the position of “plus-sized” editor of Paris Vogue. When on a trip to Hollywood, Muppet super-fans Gary and Walter, human and puppet respectively, learn of plans to destroy The Muppet Theatre for oil, it’s left to them to round up the old gang in time to save the day. The Muppets reunites audiences with all of the pathos, charm, wackiness and pizazz that made audiences fall in love with the gang in the ‘70s. Clearly a labour of love for screenwriters Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller, the pair have delivered the most Henson-esque Muppet flick since the sad passing of the great man three decades ago; working around the ‘get-theband-back-together’ formula, the focus is solely on the transcendent, timeless characters. Flight of the Conchords Bret McKenzie pens the tunes - an inspired choice - if there’s a dry eye in the house during the revelatory “Man or Muppet”, stone hearts abound. It’s interesting to draw comparison between The Muppets and recent Golden Globe winner The Artist; both films hark back to an era when cinema’s primary focus was unadulterated entertainment, and both deliver in spades.

Carnage Director Roman Polanski (Cert. 15) Adapted from Yazmina Reza’s stage play God of Carnage, Carnage takes place over the course of one evening in the Brooklyn apartment of Michael and Penelope Longstreet (John C. Reilly, Jodie Foster). After an altercation between the Longstreet’s son and his classmate Zachary Cowan, the Longstreets invite the Cowan parents (Christoph Waltz, Kate Winslet) over to cordially discuss the incident. While the evening starts genially enough, it doesn’t take long to descend into carnage as the couples’ insecurities and prejudices are exposed. Whilst Carnage is not among Polanski’s very best, it remains a funny, fascinating exercise in exceptional acting – that the cast have avoided a single Oscar nomination is nothing short of outrageous. As with so many play-to-screen adaptations, the film occasionally comes across a little too stagey, but the script is taught enough and the actors are so great that it doesn’t matter. John C. Reilly continues to excel in an increasingly diverse selection of blue-collar roles, while Waltz proves once again that he’s one of the most exciting actors working today. Occupying a space somewhere between Abigail’s Party and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, the barbed tongues of Carnage are well worth a listen.
