Spring has sprung which means the days are longer and the weather is warmer. I have all the motivation to declutter my life, and I am starting with my closet. Tis the season for spring cleaning. Not exactly sure what it is about spring that makes everyone want to declutter and get rid of things, but I feel the same way. It leaves me feeling refreshed and ready to conquer. I am constantly sipping on fruit smoothies and iced coffee, spending lots of time outside, and preparing for summer. Trying my best to keep my life well balanced between work and play. i have been so motivated and inspired lately and i love it. I know I say if every time, but this issue is my favorite. I hope you enjoy our salute to moms and girl bosses, and girl-bossing moms. This issue is full of goodness. you will reach the end feeling inspired, encouraged, and motivated. THANKS FOR LETTING THE SUNSHINE IN.

Describe your business. My husband and I own and run Fawn Design. We are all about selling the perfect diaper bag, without compromising on style of function. We currently only sell though our website, but plan to branch out into retail when the time feels right. We handle just about everything on a day to day basis, all while taking care of our almost one year old, Georgia.

How did you get started?

Fawn Design was founded in 2014 by a Husband and Wife team. Jenny and Cole came up with the idea before that. Jenny had been sewing since she was a child, Cole's work experience growing up fueled his desire to start his own business. The pair were working full time and going to school and were looking for some extra income. With the help of some friends, they came up with the idea for their sweet diaper bags...and the rest is history. Not really. These two are just getting started! Their first year they sold just under 100 bags (Jenny making them all by hand in her parent's basement...while she was pregnant!). Now they are selling out shipments from a manufacturer. We love their bags and their passion to produce really great products. Fawn Design is currently working up new colors and new products and we cannot wait to see what comes next!

18 Sunshine Issue No. 13

Fawn Design was an idea for many years, I learned to sew at 5 years old and have been regularly sewing and designing since. Fawn Design became a reality for us just over 2 years ago. While talking with some friends late one night we came up with the idea that I should design and make a diaper bag. Over the next few months we came up with the design and I started to hand make each Fawn Design bag. I did this for almost a year, super late at night after I came home from working a full time job. Cole would help with the business side of things after work and school. We knew we were onto something good, so we decided it was time to be done sewing and turn that over to a manufacturer. The problem was, we didn't have any money! And we found out we were expecting our first child. While living in my parents basement we decided to run a Kickstarter campaign to help raise the funds for manufacturing. Our goal was to raise $25,000 in just 15 days. To our surprise we ended up raising $42,000 in that short time. This was a huge confirmation to us that we were doing what we were meant to do.

What's behind the name? One night while my husband Cole and I were laying in bed thinking and rattling off different business names he came up with Fawn: as in baby deer. We decided to add Design in case we add other non-baby related products to our business.

What do you love about your work? I love the satisfaction I feel on a daily basis for starting with basically nothing and turning it into something bigger than Cole and I ever imagined. I never thought my husband and I both could work from home and be so involved in Georgia's everyday life. I never thought I would use my sewing talent to create a product that is loved by so many. I am beyond grateful. We give 100% everyday because we know how hard work pays off.

What's the most challenging part of your work? You really need a thick skin in business, and I have the thinnest skin!!! It's hard to not take negative comments or criticism personal. Our bag is like a child to me. I would sew them until my fingers bled! How could someone feel this way? I know that sounds really dramatic but it's something that is really hard for me. I want to please everyone and make everyone happy, which we all know is impossible! I'm really working on letting the little things go, and remembering doing my best is all I can do. And there are just mean people out theret too!

Dad s approve too!

Describe your office.

What is your biggest accomplishment so far?

Well, I'm currently working from my kitchen counter this morning! But we do have a home office that we use sometimes, but we recently moved into an office space about a 15 minute drive from our house. Usually Cole or I go in (mostly him, I stay home with Georgia most of the time). Sometimes we all go. It's nice. Our office is right above our fulfillment center, where we store our bags and have all the orders shipped from. Not having to pack and ship our own orders has helped us grow so much! With us both owning our business we get to travel a good amount and do work wherever we are! This is good and bad. Sometimes you just want to relax, but there is always work to be done!

The first one that comes to mind for me is a year ago when our Kickstarter was featured in The New York Times. I remember getting a phone call from New York and wondering if I should answer! Well I am sure glad I did. Our Kickstarter was a huge accomplishment for us. It was so much work, but we couldn't be where we are right now without it. It also never gets old to see someone you don't know wearing Fawn Design bag around. I used to be creepy and go up to them, but now I just usually say a little prayer of gratitude to that person for supporting my family and me!

What Keeps you inspired?

How do you spend your days off?

I feel inspired by business owners with similar beginnings as we had with Fawn Design. It helps me to remember where we started and where we can go. I also really feel inspired by bloggers. I don't think they get enough credit for how much they put themselves out there for the world to see and criticize. The majority of the ones I follow are ahead of the trend. which I love, but they also don't engage in the negativity which I admire a lot.

We rarely take a full day off. The time we do take off we like to spend at the golf course. My husband is an unreal golfer, but he is also a great teacher. His so patient with me, and we really enjoying golfing together. I mentioned we also love to travel. We both love to see this amazing world, and always have a plan of where we want to go next! Having Georgia makes us really like to slow down and appreciate the small things. Taking her for a walk or letting her crawl around the living room floor while we are free from distractions is my favorite way to spend my time.

22 Sunshine Issue No. 12

Best advice you've been given? When Cole and I got married my dad's advice to me was, "Don't say anything you can't take back!" I honestly think about that almost everyday! I try to be careful with not only what I say but how I say it. I try to be quick to apologize if I do say something unkind. It's unfortunate to say, but when we started Fawn Design we haven't always had the support of everyone, so trying hard to listen to the people who encouraged us and not take in what people who didn't were saying was and is important for me each day.

Mom accessory you cannot live without? Am I allowed to say my diaper bag??! I do actually love my bag, but in all seriousness I'd have to say our stroller. I am such a wimp carrying Georgia in her carseat more than a few feet! If we ever forget it I almost cry. haha. When we've traveled without it I always regret it!

Best thing about being a mother? I think anyone would say this is a hard question because being a mother is amazing, but it is also really, really hard. The hardest thing I have ever done. I love watching Georgia learn new things. She just learned to clap her hands and claps all the time now! It melts my heart! When I go to get her out of her crib she always starts to clap when she sees me. I'm lucky to be her mom.

These BFFs are changing fitness, for the good. What started as a a small fitness program in Waco, TX has turned into a revolutionary, empowering program across the united states. Their fun routines and passion for community are transforming lives physically and emotionally. Founders Anglea, Catherine and Emily have created a space where all women are welcome, no matter where they are on their fitness journey. Every women should have the opportunity to pursue health and fitness with confidence and encouragement. That is what Refit Revolution is all about. We love everything about Refit, and you should too!

32 Sunshine Issue No. 13

Squad Goals! Besties, girl bossing and changing the fitness world to empower others? Yes! We need more squads like them in this world.

Describe your business.

What's behind the name?

REFIT® is a fitness program designed to build community. Our vision is to create a fitness experience that changes people from the inside out, and this vision is accomplished by focusing on the heart as a muscle AND a soul. Our BODY+MIND +SPIRIT emphasis is what creates a powerful, uplifting fitness experience that lasts well beyond the workout.

Our mission statement is to revolutionize the fitness experience by building community and inspiring people to live with impact. From our mission statement, to our vision statement, to our core values: We strive to equip our community to live REVOLUTIONARY. This revolutionary “life of impact” has a "ripple effect," and that’s where the name came from: revolution + ripple effect. It’s rejecting the traditional stereotypes of the “perfect fitness body.” It’s empowering women to take time to invest in themselves through fitness and community. It’s equipping instructors to risk teaching in their own communities. These things have a ripple effect that can literally effect generations to come.

REFIT® combines several elements of fitness into one power-packed hour. We focus on combining powerful movements with positive music…oh, and did we mention that it is FUN?! The workout formula is easy to follow and will challenge fitness enthusiasts and welcome beginners.

How did you get started? We started teaching a dance-fitness program in our home church in Waco, Texas in 2009. What began as a small class of 2-10 women, grew to over 150 participants per class 3 times a week. We realized that there was a strong current of community within our classes, and we knew we had tapped into an “X-Factor” that transcended a traditional fitness class. We decided pretty quickly that the community + value focus of fitness was something that could (and should) be replicated by other instructors, and we began putting together an instructor training program to meet that need.

How did y'all meet? We each connected through fitness classes in the Waco area. Catherine was actually a participant in our (Emily & Angela’s) fitness classes at the church. The three of us connected with our vision and heart for fitness + community, and that kindred spirit has led us through a lot of ups and downs, highs and lows. It’s been a powerfully incredible journey together.

THe girls are on tour. Find out when they will be cose to you at: refitrev.com

What do you love about your work?

Describe your workspace/office.

Creating things and empowering others. I love that the work we do allows for creativity. Every idea, opportunity, and solution that we bring to our community is a chance to create. That creation allows us to empower our participants and instructors. Small things like instructor playlists and YouTube videos, or bigger things like RECON (our first-ever national instructor convention that took place last year) – all of these things empower and equip someone else to become better, bolder, and bigger – that is very gratifying.

For the most part, we each work independently from home. We have a studio office and meeting room that we’ll use when we need to come together as a staff, but we’ve also learned the importance of maintaining separate work lanes. One thing is for sure, whenever there’s “work” happening, there’s bound to be loud music. If fitness can feel like a party – so can work!

What is the most challenging part of your work? The most challenging thing is understanding that as our community grows, we can no longer “do it all” ourselves. The three of us as founders have such relational hearts – we love knowing our instructors by name, their stories, their needs. It’s frustrating when we can’t tend to each specific one. Pouring into our community is something we love doing, but there’s only so much you can pour before you start depleting your own tank. We’re learning how to pour from a full tank…not an empty one.

Follow Refit Revolution on instagram @refitrev

34 Sunshine Issue No. 13

What keeps you inspiried? Two things come to mind. The first is social media. I love doing a “deep dive” into social media accounts and seeing what’s out there. It’s mind-blowing to see how much ingenuity, creativity, and entrepreneurship is happening. Secondly, our instructor community; They took a risk on us, on REFIT®. We’re a small business, and we can’t compete with all the big box fitness programs. But our instructors BELIEVE in us and what we’re doing. There’s not a day that goes by that we don’t think about that…it is literally what keeps us going.

What's your favorite city you've trained/ toured in? Goodness, there are so many. Portland and Seattle quickly come to mind. We love the culture of these two areas. We also love Boston, Nashville, North Carolina. Every training location holds a very special place in our hearts because we’re still in such AWE that people show up for REFIT!

35

How do you spend your days off? Honestly, days off just mean more time to dream and brainstorm. It’s hard to ever completely turn off our work brains, but when we do it usually involves water, sand, and sun. The three of us love being on the lake, by the ocean, or really anywhere together. It’s pretty funny that days off for us just mean: “hey, want to hang out?” You’d think we’d be ready for some time apart – nope. We love being together.

36 Sunshine Issue No. 13

What is the best piece of advice you have been given? One of the best pieces of advice we’ve ever heard was from a teaching on teambuilding/leadership by Bill Hybels. He recommends that when evaluating or adding team/leadership members, individuals must meet three criteria: CHARACTER, COMPETENCY and CHEMISTRY. Not 1 of 3. Not 2 of 3. But all three. This has been a guiding truth for our team as we’ve made decisions along this REFIT journey. Requiring all 3 C’s has been a much-needed criteria and boundary in many big decisions, and we’ve definitely benefited from this evaluation tool again, and again, and again.

Favorite "girl boss" routine? “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC. It’s been our secret dream to be in a boy band, and this is probably as close as we’ll ever get!

Why do you feel it is important to be revolutionary and different in the world of fitness? Most external issues are the result of internal problems. Many fitness programs attempt to fix the external (weight loss, muscle building, calories burned, etc.), but the revolutionary part of REFIT is that we focus on: the internal. When people feel genuinely loved, deeply accepted, and strongly tethered to a community – they are changed. Losing 15 pounds might be a great short-term fix, but the long-term affects of love, acceptance, and community is what will spark a lifechanging revolution.

Six moves

you can do at home

Cross Jab flys

With your feet squared to the front and slightly wider than shoulderwidth apart, bring both hands up to either side of your chin making fists. In one smooth motion, rotate your hips to the left and pivot your right toe toward the middle (left). Extend your right arm out and strike with knuckles aligned horizontally. Repeat the same motion to the right side (punching left) and continue alternating at a steady pace for a full 8 to 16 counts.

With your feet squared to the front and slightly wider than shoulderwidth apart, bring both arms up, together and bent at 90 degrees, so that your forearms are directly in front of your face. Shift your weight to your left foot and hip, and twist your core slightly to the left side. Swing your arms open in a controlled motion while maintaining a 90 degree angle. Return to center and repeat, shifting weight to the same side for a full eight counts before switching sides.

39

upright row lunge Swing

From a standing position, shift your weight to your left foot and gain your balance, arms by your side. Once stable, simultaneously lift your right knee to hip-height while also pulling your arms up, fists together and elbows out, hitting a "T" position at your chest. Return to the starting position by lowering your arms and leg. Continue for a full eight counts before switching sides.

Lower yourself down until your back knee is a couple inches from the floor. In this position, your arms should be in a running motion, right arm forward and left arm back. In one smooth motion, push off the back foot and swing your leg straight through to a knee raise, and switch your arms so that your left arm is forward, right arm back. Swing your right foot back to return to the lunge position, and repeat for 8 counts before switching front legs.

side kick full body squat

From standing, shift your weight to your right foot. Gain your balance, and bring both hands up to either side of your chin making fists. Pick your left foot up, bend your knee and lean slightly to the right before extending the lifted leg out straight to the left side. Slightly shift hands down and to the side to be centered in front of your left shoulder. Strike with your big toe toward the ground and your pinky toe toward the ceiling. Bend your knee to return to standing and continue lifting, and striking for a full eight counts before switching sides.

Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and your toes angled out. Lower your body down, keeping your knees aligned over your ankles, as low as possible while maintaining form. In one motion, lift your heels off the ground, and extend your arms wide overhead with palms facing in. Hold the position for a full eight counts before resting.

Two years ago Rachel started selling her kids hand-me-down clothing on instagram to make ends meet while her husband was finishing grad school. She noticed that the clothes she had made herself were the clothes that were selling the fastest. She soon realized she needed to turn this into a business. Another great business that started in a parent's basement. She started with tee shirts, then developed her signature romper. She loved the simplicity of a one piece, but was over the snap closure and hassel of getting a restless toddler in and out of it. The Rags rompers have no snaps, no hassel. They are stretchy enough to slide right up and over your littles shoulders with a cozy fit. You can't beat that. Rachel quickly out grew her parent's basement, a small house and has now moved to a manufacturer. WHAT? All this in 2 years? How can it get any crazier? Shark Tank. That's how. Rachel most recently pitched her idea on ABC's Shark Tank and landed a sweet deal. We are suckers for success stories like Rags, and ccelebrate momprenuers like Rachel.

Describe your business. We are a fashion forward clothing company that specializes in comfortable, practical and stylish clothing for your little ones.

48 Sunshine Issue No. 13

That's Rachel. The one with the super cool hair in the middle of all those tiny humans. How did you get started? I actually started by selling my young kids hand-me-down clothing through Instagram to help ends meet. We were struggling for money and that was a way I could help provide. Eventually people started really liking the rompers that I had made for my youngest and it immediately took off from there.

What's behind the name? I came up with the name when I was selling hand-me-downs and it stuck!!

What do you love about your work? I love that I am living my dream. I work with the coolest team and we are constantly creating. It is empowering to be able to say I am a Mom, AND I own and run a full-on business. There is so much I love about my work. I am one lucky lady.

What do you love about your work? I struggle to find balance. I feel like it is a constant battle. Somedays I just want to be with my kids and that gets tricky.

Describe your office/workspace. We have one big giant room full of desks and computers. It is fun being surrounded by everyone. I have made it a point to hire those that I get a long with because we are going to be spending a lot of time together!

What keeps you inspired? I think a lot of things keep me inspired, but one of the things that come to my mind is my customers. They are rooting for me, and their amazing support keeps me so inspired.

She makes shirts too, and they are just as adorable.

52 Sunshine Issue No. 13

We saw you were on Shark Tank recently, how was that experience? The scariest moment of my life! ha ha. It was also one of the most rewarding experiences I've been through. It really challenged me, and gave me confidence in certain things I otherwise wouldn't have had. I am grateful I was able to be a part of that.

What is your biggest accomplishement so far? Shark Tank was definitely one of those "pinch me" moments. It was so surreal that after a little over a year I was standing there, pitching my business on national television. Unbelievable really. Also, Vogue and Forbes feature were pretty high up there as well.

How do you spend your days off? With my Family!! I love a good outdoor activity. I have the coolest little family, and am lucky to have surrounded myself with the greatest friends. We try to spend every minute we can playing. I am a firm believer in fun.

Best advice you've been given? Don't step on soft heads to get to the top. Be kind to everyone. I love that advice so much. I believe it has really helped me get where I am today. Karma is real, and being kind and authentic can get you way further than greed.

What is the best thing about being a mother? There are so many cool things about being a Mother. I love watching my kids grow and become their own little people. They have their own interests and ideas. They are driven by their own passions, and it is fun to watch what path they want to take. Each of my boys are so different, but they are all a piece of me and it is rad. Being a Mom is hard and will be hard forever, but someone once said, "if it isn't hard, it isn't worth it." I am the luckiest Mom and I feel so so blessed.

Rachel killing it on ABC's Shark Tank.

Literally. You should look at their instagram and their website. It is stunning. We love everything We Are Unveiled stands for, and the impact they are making on women of all ages.

Describe your purpose. Stories are our platform, Disciplship is our mission. This is the one tag line we want people to take away when they visit.

This is Monica. The founder and passion behind We Are Unveiled. If you ever have the chance to have a conversation with her, it may change your life.

59

How did you get started? We were founded just really through the Lord, as cliche as it is. I am not a cliche person. I am usually just, "Keep it real," but every time I tell this story I feel a little cliche because I am like, "JESUS...REALLY." In short, I had three prophetic words in the span of 24 hours, and it was all related to me birthing something. Words like, "I see you pregnant, you're like 9 months and about to pop, but it's not a baby. It's an idea...it's something God has given you." I had two people tell me that and another person read Luke Chapter 2 over me, "The immaculate conception of Jesus" and said, "What you are about to birth is of the Holy spirit, and when people see it they are going to know it is seeds of God and not you." That was in November 2013. I had no idea what these people were talking about. I've always been the type of person to support others and their dreams. I never had the desire to be the founder of anything. Fast forward to July 2014 (9 months later...CRAZY), I get a vision from the Lord. I see a computer screen pulled up on facebook of this girl talking and sharing her story and the video is going viral. When I got home I wrote it all out, and asked the Lord what this meant. He said, "Share my daughters stories, empower them to action, and you lead the army." He kept repeating that over and over, and I kept saying, "No. Not me. You;ve got the wrong person. I am not qualified." But God just kept reminding me of who He was saying, "I Am, I can, and I will, so you just need to go." It turned into me leaning on him through the whole process. I met with a group of 12 girls in my apartment in August of 2014, told them this story, and said, "We are suuposed to share stories of women, and I think you are supposed to be a part of it." That turned into our team now. A team of 8 girls who are our founding team. We launched in May of 2015.

60Sunshine Issue No. 13

What's behind the name? I have a personal conviction for people to discover their purpose and identity in Christ outside of what the church says they need to be. Our name, "We are Unveiled" come from 2 Corinthians 3. The whole Chapter of remove that veil, you can be honest about where you are, you don't have to hide. Jesus already payed the price for everything, so you don't have to live under this legalistic law. You can be completely free. We always knew we wanted it to be video testimony. God has given me a huge heart for this generation and connecting to them, so we wanted to usher them into to church and non-profit ministry. We want to do it with excellence and relevance, and we want to attract the believer and nonbeliever alike. That's why everything you see looks the way it does, and has the feel that it does.

Do you do this full time? Right now it is part time, and I work part time for a friend. I am going to go into my "Monica Mode," but in order for us to do all of this I could not work full time anymore. I was a manager for a mission's organization. I was constantly working, and didn't have freedom to have a life in a sense. I know when you start something you put a lot into, so I get that aspect, but at the same time I was realizing that this is so much more than just an on-the-side gig. So at the end of November I left my job. I am working part time making a little bit of money, and spending the rest of the time dedicated to We Are Unveiled. I am working on fundraising and trying to get my salary supported to be able to do this more on a full time basis. Even if I was able to do this full time, we still need more people on our team. So we are really praying through, and trying to figure out how to monotize what we do well. The opportunity is there. The doors are open.

It feels a lot like I am Moses, and I have my peeps and we just got free from Pharoh and we are like, "YAAASS LORD, We are getting out of here." And God is saying, "Go this way," and been leading you the whole time and it has been awesome so you are like< "HECK YEAH." Then you come up against an ocean, and an army behind you is about to engulf you. But Moses had to go out into the water and wait. It feels a lot like that right now. We are here, and we know that God led us here. We are here, we are going to be obedient, continue to persevere, and do what we can. All of my staff are volunteers. No one is payed. So we are just living on a prayer quite literally.

What do you love most about your work? I love people a lot. I love being able to get those emails, instagram messages, facebook messages, and texts of people who say, "This really helped me and I feel really free." We have had over 100 girls write in and share their full story with us. It's the same thread of, " I have never told anyone this, but I feel like I can tell you." I love being able to create a place for women to share their stories. I love hearing some of those stories, being able to see and interact with them, and know that this is worth it.

The amazingly talented and beautiful Unveiled team.

What is the most challenging part?

Describe your office/workspace.

Being the founder of a ministry. Straight up. I think it's more of me being such a doer and go-getter. I have to say, daily, this is not mine. This is the Lord's. If I have an inch, I will take it and run with it on my own. The challenging part is saying, "God this is your vision, reveal to me more of your vision so I can steer this ship where you want it to go." I don't want to put in my vision, ideas, and what I think can happen, because I am such a doer and I will miss the mark.

No office, girl. We are praying for a studio though. I work a lot in a collaborative workspace in the area. It's free, so I go there a lot, and I work from home.

What keeps you inspired. I would say for us it is definitely stories. Just hearing more stories, and figuring out how to set ourselves apart as a brand and ministry. I stay heavily inspired because I surround myself with people who are really excellent at what they do. I constantly ask people questions, and find people who are experts in their craft.

What is your biggest accomplishment?

Best advice you've been given?

I think our biggest accomplishment is that we haven't given up. We wake up everyday and see what is before us and tackle that. And we wake up the next day and do the same thing. I think when something is of God, and his hand is upon it. It is this realization that you're in over your head and completely inadequate to do the job. But waking up and saying, "I am still going to get up and do it, and I am going to put forth what I can." That gives God the opportunity to flex and get all the glory for it. It is so cliche to say, and I never thought in my life I would say something like this...but it really is the Lord. We are not doing anything magical. We are just saying yes. We will continure to celebrate those little victories, but I am always looking forward to what's next.

A few years ago I was working for this guy who manages an entrepenuer center in Dallas. He is a very successful business man. I was telling him my idea, and that I want to build a team and he said, "When you hire people, you need to make sure they are all better than you in their job and then coach them." He said,"You want people on your team who make you feel threatened that they could take your job. You want people on your team who if you interviewed up against them, that you may lose in the interview." I had never thought that way as a leader.

How do you spend your days off? I love hanging out with people. I love spending time with my friends and family. I love to benge watch TV. I am also really involved in my church, and love serving there.

They offer an interactive magazine where you read through Monica s story and learn how to tell your own! The pages are filled with encouraging words and beautiful pictures.

DAVIS

Davis is a duo of Austin, Texas locals, Sara Davis and Bradley Vaught. I walked into a show where Davis was opening, having never heard them, but I knew immediately that they were something special. Sara and Bradley are so full of life, and their joy is radiant. They have been journeying together for quite a few years, and I am incredibly thankful that our paths crossed. Their desire is to make music that touches the soul and I believe they are accomplishing just that.

72 Sunshine Issue No. 13

How long have you known each other/ How did you meet? Bradley: We have known each other for 8 years. We went to the same school and Sara was friends with my sister, Valerie. One day she came over to my house for Valerie’s birthday party, and that is where our very first jam took place.

When and Why did you start the band? Bradley: We have always played music together whether that be just jamming during school breaks or playing at chapel. Sara: We were both obsessed with MUTEMATH so we bonded over that. We were always music buddies growing up. When I was about to play some shows and release the EP, I knew I didn’t want to do it alone so I called Bradley, and he was down! Hence, Davis was born.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before? Bradley: I think it is soft, but intricate. The lyrics matter to us a lot. Sara: It’s somewhere between folk and singer-songwriter and alternative. We really want to write pretty music that you can really drown in, or you can just have playing in the car in the background on a road trip.

How has your music evolved since you first started playing together? Bradley: We wanted to be like an electronic synth band…a lot like MUTEMATH. Sara: Then we had a Jon Foreman phase, and now we’re really influenced by people like Justin Vernon, Alt-J, The Staves, Daughter, S. Carey and so on.

What is your usual songwriting process? Sara: I’m kind of the songwriter, and then Bradley comes in and produces it and makes it exponentially more badass. EXPONENTIALLY. Hopefully we’ll start writing together though. We just suck at time management.

What keeps you inspired? Sara: The music I love, and being outside or traveling. And people and life experiences. Lots of things. Bradley: Listening to new music and ditto to the other things.

Do you prefer recording or playing live? Both: TRICK QUESTION! Ha, jk! But really, really hard to answer. Recording is awesome because there’s so much more to it and you’re actually creating this thing that you’ve dreamed of. Where as playing live is insane because you’re interacting with people who love what you’ve created, and you’re getting to reconnect with what you’ve made. It’s the best feeling.

Who are your musical and non-musical influences? Sara: For both of us, Bon Iver/Justin Vernon, The Staves, Daughter, Ben Howard, Penny & Sparrow, The National, From Indian Lakes, S. Carey, and honestly, just whoever we are listening to at the time. We just love it all! And non-musical: our faith is a huge part of our music. Bradley: JESUS. We want tot find a way to show who Jesus is through our music and through our creativity.

What life experiences have influenced your music the most?

What is the most challenging thing you have faced as a band?

Sara: For me, meeting my future husband, current fiancé. The deep marks made from caring about someone so deeply are permanent and really change everything. Also, just learning to trust God and not myself in any aspect of my life.

Both: We have a little problem with our time management when it comes to working on Davis music. It’s not that we are just sitting around being lazy – we are both doing great things! But if we are being honest, that is where our hearts for many things get conflicted. We love a lot of things.

Bradley: How and what I write is typically dictated by people I’ve met and also people who have left.

What are your dreams and goals in life and in music? Sara: I’m kind of at a point in my life where I really just want to be obedient. I feel the fullest and the most alive when God is using me. I want to go wherever He wants to take me. That said though, I think it’d be insanely amazing for music to be a career. Traveling, singing, meeting incredible people, that’s the dream. Bradley: I have a problem with liking too many things and wanting to do too many things. One of my passions though is coffee. I want to someday go to coffee growing countries to make relationships there and be a coffee sourcer. I also want my own coffee shop. I also want to be a production manager at a church. Or a professional NBA player.

74 Sunshine Issue No. 13

What is the best advice you have ever been given? Sara: I guess in regards to music and life… this gift of music isn’t ours, hold things loosely, and God honors obedience.

What advice would you give to others who are seeking to get their start in music? Sara: JUST DO IT. You gotta try. Don’t be afraid to ask people for gigs, and put yourself out there. Bradley: Just put stuff out! Oh my gosh. Just record something. It’s like writing a paper. The hardest thing is sitting down and just doing it. There’s a flow, yo.

How do you spend your time off? Bradley: Making more music, making coffee, school, serving coffee. Sara: Hanging with my people, bouldering, running, traveling, school. I work at a church, worship leading, so hanging out with the girls on the crew, etc.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? Sara: Justin Vernon Bradley: Kanye

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, who would it be and why? Sara: That’s impossible, but I’ll answer This Side by Nickel Creek, been one of my favorites since like 2nd Grade. Bradley: Bon Iver, Bon Iver

Favorite concert you've been to? Sara: MUTEMATH at Common Grounds or Ben Howard and Daughter at Red Rocks. Bradley: When I saw The National and Justin Vernon and Sufjan Stevens came on too. Eaux Claires in Wisconsin.

Favorite venue you've played? Both: The Parish (Austin, TX)

What is the first album you ever owned? Bradley: All We Know is Falling – Paramore Sara: This Side – Nickel Creek

How can fans-to-be access your music? Spotify, iTunes, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, any online music store you can thing of!

What's Next? A couple singles in the works to put out in the next few months, and start working on a full-length album. And of course, some shows here and there!

Current Obsession: yoga pants

Albion Fit

Aloyoga

These comfy pants, but kind of not-pants have come a long way! Every woman should own a classic pair of black leggings plus some of the super cool ones you can find today. Yoga pants are not just for yoga anymore. The yoga pant is perfect for running errands, watching Netflix, and sometimes a night out. We love their endless options and versitility. We like to consider yoga pants the power pants of Mamas and Girl Bosses.
