lexandria von Bromssen might look familiar to you from her appearance on season12 of the Lifetime reality television series, Project Runway. Her runway show in the final episode had fashion lovers everywhere squealing with delight. Back home in San Mateo, California, Alexandria runs Camp Couture, a fashion and sewing school that provides lessons to all levels and ages in a fun, supportive, and creative environment. At Camp Couture, students are taught to express their individuality by designing and sewing their own garment and interior ideas. Instruction is provided in an artistic studio environment that fosters creativity. The studio is environmentally green and runs the workshop at 90% sustainable/recycled materials. Her studio also houses a local designer collective called Red Square Boutique, featuring chic fashions. It is a true house of fashion.

HOW DID CAMP COUTURE GET STARTED?

I was driving to the farmers market one day, and the idea popped into my head in the car, a random flash from nowhere. I went on Craigslist and posted some ads and had two kids sign up that following week. It grew to 10 kids weekly the next summer. Finally, I got a website and the concept exploded. The kids love it here, and they come back again and again.

DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY AT CAMP COUTURE. ALEXANDRIA VON BROMSSEN Owner, Camp Couture

The kids come in, sew, and make whatever they want. The environement is very friendly, so not only do they sew, but kids make new friends. The sewing circle is a lot of fun. I film and document a lot of the fun and cool aspects that occur here at Camp Couture and create little videos that I post on the Camp Couture site on the video page. A typical day is a kid wanting to make something, and by the end of the day, there is a sense of accomplishment and a cool, wearable, relevant project. There is a lot of creativity, positivity, laughter, and cool music in the background at Camp Couture every day that makes for an overall fun experience.

Music, travel, art, and the kids I teach all give me a large degree of inapiration.

GET RID OF CLUTTER! ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS: DO I USE IT? DO I LOVE IT? IS IT BEAUTIFUL OR SPECIAL TO ME? IS IT IN STYLE? DO I NEED IT? IF THE ANSWER IS NO, TOSS IT. IT IS ALSO HELPFUL TO SET A "GET SOMETHING NEW, GET RID OF TWO" RULE TO KEEP CLUTTER AT BAY. IF YOU BUY A NEW NAIL POLISH OR PAIR OF RUNNING SOCKS, GET RID OF TWO OLD ONES.

GIVE EVERYTHING A HOME. MAKEUP BRUSHES, JEWELRY, RIBBONS AND BOBBY PINS SHOULD ALL HAVE A DESIGNATED CONTAINER. MAKE A LIST OF EVERYTHING THAT HITS THE FLOOR OR TOP OF YOUR DRESSER FOR A WEEK AND WORK ON CREATING A SOLID HOME FOR THOSE THINGS.

SURFACE CLEAN ONCE A WEEK. IT'S EASY TO FORGET ABOUT CLEANING THE SURFACES IN YOUR SMALL SPACE. SCHEDULE TIME DURING YOUR WEEK (A FEW MINUTES EVERY SATURDAY MORNING, FOR EXAMPLE) TO WIPE DOWN ELECTRONICS, FURNITURE, WINDOWSILLS AND MIRRORS. IT CAN HAPPEN DURING A COMMERCIAL BREAK OF YOUR FAVORITE SHOW!

ORGANIZE FIRST, BUY SECOND. DON'T GO OUT AND BUY A TON OF STORAGE PIECES AND SUPPLES BEFORE YOU SORT THROUGH YOUR SPACE. CLEAN FIRST, ASSESS WHAT YOU REALLY NEED THEN BUY A CONTAINER TO FIT IF YOU DON'T ALREADY HAVE ONE LYING AROUND.

5 CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS ORGANIZED WALK-IN CLOSET? IT BELONGS TO NINA HOLST OF STYLIZIMO. www.stylizimo.com

SIMPLIFY COLORS. IF THE ITEMS YOU ARE ORGANIZING ARE BRIGHT AND BUSY, CHOOSE SIMPLE WHITE CONTAINERS, HANGERS OR SHELVES. YOU'LL BE ABLE TO FIND WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR MUCH MORE QUICKLY IF YOUR EYE CAN GO DIRECTLY TO IT.

A FAMILY MOVES TO HAITI TO NURTURE THE GROWTH OF ARTISANS AND ENTREPRENEURS

K

athy Brooks, owner of 2nd Story Goods, tells us about why she and her family moved to Haiti. "During my first trip to Haiti, nearly ten years ago, my heart was forever changed when a young mother begged us to take her baby. She was powerless to feed her child. I knew she no more wanted to give her child away than I did, but she felt it was her only option. As a mother of five, I put myself in her shoes for an instant and tried to imagine how desperate I would have to feel to hand our youngest child over to a stranger, never to see her again . . . I could not fathom it. I knew in that instant, in that one moment of perfect moral clarity, that I would spend the rest of my life doing something that would cause less women on this planet to feel that way. 2ND STORY GOODS was born that day. It has been a 10 year journey, but we definitely kicked into gear when we were able to move to Haiti in August 2011. 2nd Story Goods fulfills two intentions. In Haiti, we are on the ground nurturing the growth and development of an inspiring group of artisans and entrepreneurs. In the U.S., we are marketing goods to help generate income for people who’ve proudly earned it. We believe in a fair, liveable wage for working people. We believe that the lowest price is not always the best price. We believe in profit sharing. The profits from the sale of these goods go back into the community where the artisans live. The community uses these funds to invest in schools and churches, buy livestock, help build soccer fields, micro finance small businesses and aid in medical emergencies. We believe the people that live within a community are best suited to bring positive change for their community, model leadership qualities and empower upcoming generations. We believe that working to create beautiful things stirs up all kinds of wonder and dignity and hope and connectedness. We believe in H O P E with every fiber of this business."

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? First stories are all full of hope and innocence and expectation. Then life happens and sometimes the first story doesn't go the way we think. Dishes get chipped and left to the dump; shirts get stained and thrown out; husbands leave and wives get left to figure it out; economies shift and things seem to fall apart. This business is dedicated to the idea of the 2nd stories of life. It's where we start when the first story is over. And sometimes that is the BEST story! We use as many 2nd storied materials as possible: recycled glass, tea cups, china, aluminum, bottle caps, wood, strips of colorful cotton . . . whatever sparks imagination! We work in the country of Haiti. In a small village that lies between the city and the dump next to the sea. It is a place of people whose first stories didn't go so well, and they are proudly working on their 2nd story of life. Haiti itself is on her way to a new, beautiful story.

WHAT DO YOU

ABOUT YOUR WORK?

I LOVE designing and creating with 2nd storied materials. My favorites are aluminum, leather, glass, rocks, burlap sacks with coffee beans still in them, and clay beads. I also love sitting on porches surrounded by these amazing women, with a baby or two in my lap. I love the dust on my feet and the hot sun on my arms. I love that I drive a motorcycle to work and that my motorcycle has donkey bags across the seat (they are so cool!) so I can haul materials and goods back and forth from Jubilee. I love the look of dignity that beams from beautiful faces when they know they have made beautiful things. I love to pay people decent wages. I love that I do this with my husband in Haiti, and our oldest son in Georgia, Brandon.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE. In our house I have a great open-air porch that is open from floor to ceiling with iron bars. It is open, but somewhat protected. I have claimed it as my studio. That is where I work on designs and where I meet with individual artists. The funny thing is, I love to wake very early in the morning (before the sun comes up), and swarms of bees flock to the studio light. I have to keep turning the light off to try to trick them into leaving my work space! Ha! We have a small workshop down in Jubilee. It is where I gather with guilds and where the sewing group works. There is no electricity to this part of the city, so we sew on treadle machines (foot powered) We also iron with a coal iron. We do all the ironing on the same day because we start a fire first to get the coals hot enough to put into the iron. Pretty amazing stuff. Last year we made burlap bags sized to carry laptops and ipads with recycled burlap bags and coal irons. The technology of hundreds of years collide!

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FUTURE BUSINESS OWNERS? Follow your heart. Do what your heart longs to do. I believe God puts plans in people's hearts for the good of the planet.

KATHY BROOKS

Owner, 2nd Story Goods

Trying to learn and understand the ways of the culture, and always needing to learn more Creole. Taking time to sit and listen.

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? Journals, earrings, necklaces (we've got some really cool ones coming out)

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS OFF?

I go to the river with my son (he gets to drive the moto along the river trail), get in and float down. Then he picks me up at the spot before the dam. If we have an overnight, I love to go to the beach- there are some beautiful places. We snorkel and see tons of colorful, tropical fish and coral. It is mind blowing.

LUCKY DIAZ& THE FAMILY JAM BAND A HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM CONQUERING THE ART OF QUIRKY AND COOL

42 Sunshine Issue No. 4

L

ucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band is a hip shaking, head bopping, indie pop/rock beat band for (as they put it), "Kids and their big people." This dynamic duo has a Latin Grammy under their belt and recently released a new album entitled LISHY LOU AND LUCKY TOO. We asked the real life husband and wife team, Lucky Diaz and Alisha Gaddis, to answer a few questions about how they got started and why they love what they do.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR WORK? LUCKY: Writing songs & working with my wife. ALISHA: Performing for kids and making them move! And working with my husband!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? ALISHA: When the band started, Lucky and I were only dating. He was a session musician, and I was working as a touring performer. He had written a few songs for his amazing daughter, Ella. After much encouragement, he recorded them. People started requesting more. Lucky booked his first show at Ella's school, but then got timid about performing for kids. I knew this was something that was part of my skill set. So, in the beginning, I started performing to help out with Lucky Diaz (and the Family Jam Band). Then, we began writing songs together, and falling in love more, and performing more, and then got engaged. Then we made a real go out of everything. Now we are married and do the band full time! It is magical. The name stuck because people already knew it. But the band is basically Lucky and myself and a heap of fabulous rotating musicians that put the 'Family' in the Jam Band.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE? ALISHA: Finding out we won the Latin Grammy via text message from my brother, Grant Gaddis, while standing in the hallway ready to go into the arena, because it was pouring down rain and the red carpet was running behind. We missed our category! I told him that it was the meanest text if he was lying and the best if it was true. Turns out, it was the latter!

Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band's new album, "Lishy Loo and Lucky Too," creates a world of adventurous listening for all ages. The album also features an array of musical and theatrical guests.

LUCKY: art, new music, history ALISHA: live theater, other people's journeys, blogs, architecture, art, my husband.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS OFF?

ALISHA: Our job is our passion, so we never take days really 'off.' Especially since it is a family business. But we love to travel. Lucky cooks and collects guitars. I am a writer and constantly reading, going to see theatre, and exploring art museums. We love trying new food in whatever town we are in.
