Every time I hear, "Back to School," my mind is flooded with memories of new backpacks, old friends, and the excitement of learning. It's the sweetest time of year! Now that I have children of my own, the first day of school is even more happy and sweet. This issue celebrates all that fall brings to our lives. A new school year, perfect camping weather, and vibrant colors. One of my favorite parts of working on Sunshine Mag from home is having my kids watch over my shoulder while I put the pages together. My daughters are always asking if they can "help" with the magazine. This precious fall issue seemed like a perfect time to let them contribute. You will find Millie and Stella's back to school favorites on page 16. They are so proud of their contribution. Thank you for reading Sunshine Magazine! We are coming up on our first birthday! I can't believe it's been one year since I turned my daydream into a real living thing. Do something big this fall! Melissa

MOKUYOBI THREADS NEW YORK, NEW YORK DESCRIBE YOUR SHOP Mokuyobi Threads is an out of this world company that designs bags, clothing, accessories, and general radness for the superbiengs of Earth and beyond. We are led by our desire to create something different and new using bold colors, magic, and awesome sauce.
WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? Mokuyobi means "Thursday" in Japanese. To us, Thursday is the best day of the week. We believe that there is always something to look forward to. Whether it's Thursday, a friend's party, vacation time, or a hot date, we believe that there are always good things coming that spark excitement. We strive to create that same spark when your Mokuyobi package arrives.
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? The iron-on patches are all winners for sure. They make great gifts or a small treat for yourself without sweating the price. The 5 panel hats also make a splash.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE. It's crazy here! An explosion of color and materials of whatever project is happening that week. A good size space (hard to come by in New York) with surfaces of colorful little tchotchkes everywhere and fun prints on the wall.
DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK? Yes! Always gotta have some music going to pump up the work flow. Recent obsessions include Surfer Blood, Vampire Weekend, Swim Deep and Youngblood Hawke.

W.B. THAMM NEW YORK, NEW YORK DESCRIBE YOUR SHOP
TIPQ PWOFS
Deedee
W.B.THAMM is a playful, classic, and contemporary haberdashery brand based in NYC. All items are handcrafted and individually cut with high quality fabrics from local sources in the heart of NYC using a wide range of vintage and new fabric.
WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? I am originally from Thailand. We typically have super long names. I wanted my shop name to be meaningful to me, so I used the first initial of my parents' names (Wasana and Boonsong). I combined that with a shortened version of our family name (Sathinathammawit),
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? For non-occasions: bow ties, neckties, and pocket squares in our "Woody" dark blue chambray. For special occasions, the pocket square with custom initials and hand embroidery is the most popular.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE. Organized and practical. Things are placed where I am able to reach and keep them away easily. I LOVE a lot of light. My work station is right beside my window. It keeps me energized.
DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK? I do. I cannot work in a quiet environment. It puts me to sleep. Depending on my mood, it could be classical like Chopin, big band like Frank Sinatra, NuJazz like Pink Martini, or electronic like Daft Punk. I love music so much.

NESTLED DESIGNS ALLIANCE, OHIO DESCRIBE YOUR SHOP My shop is full of colorful, fun statement jewelry that works great for dressing up or dressing down. I design and handcraft everything, making each piece of jewelry extra special.
WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? I wish I had a story behind the name, Nestled. But in all honesty, I just thought it sounded cute!
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? I make necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. My necklaces are by far the most popular! I have a large collection of double-strand statement necklaces which seem to be a customer favorite.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE. Most of the time my workspace is a mess! But I work better that way. I love to have all of my beads and supplies right in front of my nose. It's a great way to drum up inspiration!
DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK? I don't always listen to music while I work, but if I do it's usually positive and uplifting. I particularly love Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, and Hillsong.

RILEY CONSTRUCTION NEW YORK, NEW YORK DESCRIBE YOUR SHOP One word: CUTENESS. I create modern cloth rag dolls and plushies. Every design starts off as a sketch, which becomes an original pattern. I am drawn to simpler silhouettes, a kawaii sensibility. Blame it on my Hello Kitty obsession when I was little! I love color and I especially love black and white with pops of color.
WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? Riley Construction Toys is inspired by my family's construction business. They construct big things and I construct little things. Riley is also my maiden name. Keeping handmade traditions alive is very important to us, and it's a way to honor the generations before us who created wonderful things from humble materials.
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? Rag dolls. They were an unexpected success. I started by making only animals and gnomes. A few years into my business, I made a half-dozen rag dolls from a handdrawn pattern and knew immediately that they would become a staple.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE. The magic happens at our dining room table. We have a small space, so everything has to be organized and stored away. I always have several projects going on at one time.
DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK? I can't work without it! My playlist is about one third indie (Young the Giant is a favorite), one third blues (St. Paul & the Broken Bones and the Black Keys), and a third high energy tunes like Beastie Boys and Daft Punk.

THREE BIRD NEST LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA DESCRIBE YOUR SHOP We were recently on Zulily and they said it perfectly. "A colorful bazaar of accessories with a fashionable yet free-spirited vibe. Exotic beads, tribal-inspired prints and genuine leather create this collection's natural elegance and indie style. Featuring jewelry, scarves, headbands, and more. These pieces will be the perfect accent for your boho look."
WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? The name came from my 3 little birds! I am a mom and I have a tattoo for my three kiddos. That's what inspired the name.
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? Right now our flag turban, and our boot cuffs are the most popular.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE. We are actually moving our studio. The studio is the place where we create, design samples and take photos. I really work on things from any and everywhere. Lots of sketching and developing new programs for the shop after my kids are asleep.
DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK? Oh Yes! You gotta! We have about 50 Pandora stations with a little bit of everything. We've been on a country kick for the summer.

Liza Anne ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
46 SUNSHINE Issue No. 6
L
iza Anne is an up-and-coming singer/ songwriter. She works her music career alongside her life as a college student in Nashville, TN. When she's not touring and performing all over Europe, she works as a humble barista in a local coffee shop. She's that someone we all want to be friends with. Her lyrics are honest and her roots are deep. In addition to her self-written songs, Liza Anne is gaining recognition for her ability to add a sweetness to popular songs as a cover artist. In fact, her cover of Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" was featured by Ryan Secrest on his show. She recently released a new album "The Colder Months." We asked Liza Anne a few questions about what she's doing and why she's doing it
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I guess I've always been a creative, but music started in my early teenage years. It all had to do with the artists I was listening to and the way they made me feel. I wanted to make people feel that way — like they were understood and could feel and say all of the things they thought they couldn't.
DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE. Musically and artistically I feel that I would describe myself as honest and vulnerable. I don't care for songs that beat around the bush or dance around exactly what the writer is trying to say. For my songs, I guess I could describe the style as a haunting way of saying all the things we think.
TAKE US THROUGH YOUR PROCESS OF WRITING A SONG. It's different every time. I record voice memos throughout the week of melody ideas, rants, lines, ideas, etc. and sometimes a song will
come about. Other times, they come from just making the space to create. I read an article recently that said some of the greatest poets would wake up and sit in silence with a pen and paper for two hours every morning — that's not my process, but I do think that creating a habit of letting songs pour out makes for more songs.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST EXCITING EXPERIENCE AS A MUSICIAN SO FAR? I think being in Europe has been so exciting. I would have never thought I'd be able to come over here and successfully play shows and shoot live videos for my sad songs. There's just something about singing a song you wrote in your flat to a room of listeners in London a year or so later that makes you think you're doing something right.
WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED? Surrounding myself with people who are ten steps ahead of me creatively — people who are doing things that are not necessarily the most ideal thing to be doing. I love creators; filmmakers, songwriters, painters, poets, photographers. They're taking the burden of telling stories and making things that cause me to stop and wonder and ponder. I could stare at a painting for hours.
WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES? Finding time to rest is the biggest, I think. Other than that, I guess staying in "today." I am such a dreamer, and I am always looking ten steps ahead, I need to be a bit better about living in my today. Because the todays are so good; tomorrows can wait a minute.
48 SUNSHINE Issue No. 6
"I LOVE CREATORS . . . FILM MAKERS, SONG WRITERS, PAINTERS, POETS, PHOTOGRAPHERS . . . THEY TAKE THE BURDEN OF TELLING STORIES AND MAKING THINGS THAT CAUSE ME TO STOP AND WONDER AND PONDER." Liza Anne
49
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? One of my favorite bits of advice I was given, came when I was about 14, from my uncle. He gave me a mix tape of artists like Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, and Ryan Adams, and told me to stay away from the Lil' Waynes of this world.
DESCRIBE A PERFECT SATURDAY. Sun and friends and spontaneity.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD? Anything. I love food and I love trying new foods. But, one thing I love because it goes with everything is bacon. There should always be bacon
WHAT'S NEXT FOR LIZA ANNE? That is my favorite question. There are so many things I've been dreaming up for the rest of this year and the spring. To be short, we've started recording some new songs, and there will be a lot of new videos coming out throughout the rest of the summer and early fall. I'll also be playing shows in the US again starting in September 2014.
