President’s Message

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By David Shaffer Welcome to 2022! I hope you and your heat pump survived the January winter storm. After the Annual HOA Meeting in January, your HOA Board of Directors elected officers for 2022. Your HOA Board Members for the coming year are:

• Sid Jacobs, Treasurer • David Shaffer, President • Linda Furgerson, Secretary

• Cheryl Thompson, Member at Large • Brian Olson, Member at Large • Brett Rayman, Vice President

Five of the six board members have one year or less experience on the HOA Board. The HOA Board is charged with the management of your HOA. General responsibilities of your HOA Board members include 1) establishing the budget, 2) establishing the collection policy for fees, 3) establishing and enforcing rules, 4) administering contracts, and 5) employing a management company to administer the day-to-day operations. The first full year your HOA was not controlled by the developer was 2021. The HOA Board spent a good part of last year getting a better understanding of the HOA governing documents and established a framework for managing the HOA in compliance with those documents. The HOA Board asks for your patience as it sorts through these documents in order to comply with them while balancing the attractiveness of the community with the cost associated therewith. As we begin 2022, your HOA Board will endeavor to protect the best interests of the community as a whole and maintain the value of our jointly owned assets. Some of the projects planned for this year are completing Cresswind Parkway paving and sidewalk repairing projects, negotiating landscape and pine straw agreements for 2023, evaluating grading and drainage issues throughout the community, and addressing traffic issues.

Manager’s Corner

KITTI’S CORNER By: Kitti Kleinedler If you ask any resident why they moved to Cresswind, the answer always is for the lifestyle that was promised. Certainly, the grounds are beautiful and impressive from the moment one passes the waterfall and continues down Cresswind Parkway on what was aptly called “the market trail”. The homes and floorplans are desirable too. But it’s the lifestyle - the outdoor concerts, the over 100 clubs, the tennis and pickleball courts, the marina, the hiking trails, and of course the 3-story clubhouse. Those were, and still are, the selling points of Cresswind at Lake Lanier. Lifestyle . . . we have one human being designated as the Lifestyle Director, Miss Maggie Shay. And as wonderful as she is, she couldn’t begin to do this all alone. That is where the residents come in. This is your community. And your help is needed to deliver all that was promised when you first visited this special corner of the world. The clubs and committees that provide parties, activities, lectures, and more are run by volunteers, other residents just like yourself. I have noticed that some of our committees are in need of some new blood to keep things running. Clubs are always interested in new members, especially ones willing to take on leadership roles. It is very easy to sit back and enjoy the fruits of other’s labors and let the same people keep doing for others. There are some residents who have been on several committees or chaired clubs, moving from one then to another. But eventually even those volunteers get burned out. So I encourage each of you to take a turn and “serve” Cresswind on a club or committee, not just as a participant, but in a leadership role to ensure that the lifestyle that is the cornerstone of Cresswind living remains vibrant and strong. You can reach out to the committees to express your interest or watch for the announcements in the Daily Update when they are looking for members. If you are in a club, be willing to take on some extra duties or responsibilities. If everyone would contribute just two years of volunteer service, the lifestyle that was promised will remain robust and Cresswind Strong.

We have a list of organizations that provide skilled in-home care. This information is available and comes with no recommendations by the Committee. If you need assistance or if you’d like to volunteer to be part of the CARE Committee in an effort to assist our neighbors, please contact Mary Quisenberry.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE Submitted by: Betsy Robertson

Elachee Nature Science Center coming to Cresswind. The Education Committee is teaming up with the Elachee Nature Science Center to bring several free lectures and outdoor programs to Cresswind this spring. Volunteer naturalists from Elachee will host guided hikes along Cresswind’s own trail system, as well as within the Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve, during the month of April. The 1,440-acre Chicopee Woods preserve, located on Atlanta Highway about five miles southeast of Cresswind, is one of Georgia’s largest protected green spaces, boasting eight miles of trails among woodland, lake, stream, and wetland habitats. During the guided hikes, Elachee’s hosts will discuss types of plants and wildlife specific to northeast Georgia, plus the ways in which the area’s flora and fauna have adapted and thrived here over time. Other planned programs include a lecture on the culture, contributions, and history of the Cherokee nation, as well as a boat trip during which participants will

explore Lake Lanier’s water quality and other properties. In addition to the upcoming Elachee programs, Cresswind lifestyle director Maggie Shay plans to continue her monthly “Cresswind Website 101” series to familiarize residents with features available on cresswindatll.com, including how to find and use various electronic forms; access guidelines for architectural and landscaping changes; and update your personal information in the online resident directory. For dates/times and a complete list of planned programs, see “Upcoming Events” by logging into cresswindatll. com and clicking on the “Our Community” drop-down menu, then “Committees” and “Education Committee.” You’ll also find Meeting Minutes and recent presentations there too. LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE By: Linda Furgerson

Welcome to 2022! This third in a series of articles regarding the idiosyncrasies of landscaping here are Cresswind Lake Lanier will deal with winter landscape concerns and pre-planning for spring. January, February, and March can bring a variety of weather patterns. Anywhere from snow and ice to almost summer like temperatures. Unfortunately, these drastic changes in temperature can play havoc on grasses, shrubs, trees, and plants. There are of course, some things you can do to prepare for spring planting and/or landscape changes. First and foremost, your grass has gone dormant for the winter. Both Zoysia and Bermuda grasses will thatch. It is their normal winter appearance. You will notice your pets tracking in more and more grass. Unfortunately, there is no effective way to resolve this other than sit back and wait. It is NOT a result of mowing, lack of water, or treatments. It is just the natural lifecycle of these two grasses. As a pet owner, I just grin and bear it and hope that growing season comes quickly. If you are considering making updates to your landscaping, now is the time to engage one of the many local contractors. MTScapes no longer does pay-for-service design and installation of landscaping. However, there are many local companies who can provide those type of services. Please make sure your contractor of choice is aware of the current do not plant list, as well as the other published rules and regulations regarding landscape. All landscape changes or improvements require you to submit an EIR (External Improvement Request) form, and review and approval by the Landscape Committee. Annuals vs. Perennials. Two basic types of flowering plants exist: annuals and perennials. Annuals have a noticeably short lifecycle, normally a particular season. Once dead they do not rejuvenate. That is why you see Snapdragons in early spring, replaced by Petunias, replaced by Pansies for the winter. They are intended to only provide seasonal color. Perennials have much longer lifespans - years. Examples could be nandina, roses, abelia, daylilies, tulips, anything that either stays in bloom or canopy all year or returns after a dormancy period, normally in winter. Before planting any shrub, perennial, or annual plant, please consult the DO NOT PLANT information found in the current copy of the Rules and Regulations Manual located on the Cresswind Website. Because Cresswind is adjacent to numerous natural areas, deer roam freely and tend to forage on our March/April 2022

landscaping. You may want to consider using deer-resistant plants, installing temporary netting, or using pungent herbs in your landscaping or other environmentally-safe deer preventative measures. Local nurseries or landscaping contractors can provide some additional guidance in these areas. Just keep in mind, there are NO deer-proof plants. OTHER HELPFUL INFO: • Planting of annuals and perennials in existing beds, as long as the plants in question are not listed on the do not plant list, does not require Landscape Committee approval (EIR (External Improvement Request) form is not required). • Alterations to the size and location of existing beds, or the installation of new beds does require Landscape Committee approval (EIR (External Improvement Request) form is required). • Replacement of dead or diseased plants is the responsibility of the homeowner and is at their expense. • Homeowners are responsible for ensuring adequate hydration/watering of all flowerbed areas. • Trimming and maintenance of the flowerbed areas are subject to the level of service selected by the homeowner. Do Not Plant Lists and Plant Size Restrictions Explained Materials listed on the Do Not Plant List are placed on this list for one or more of the following reasons: • Their invasive nature. • Their size is impractical for our smaller yards. • Potential for hazard to people or animals because they are toxic or deemed poisonous. Plants that are rather “tame” in other climes may become invasive in the more temperate environment in Georgia. Therefore, it is important to consult the current published Do Not Plant List available in the Cresswind Rules and Regulations. Additional information on invasive plants is available from the Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council https://www.gaeppc.org/list/ or https://efotg.sc.egov.usda. gov/references/public/GA/Georgia_List_of_Exotic_and_ Invasive_Plant.pdf Any request that contains plants whose descriptions contain warnings and/or other cautions regarding their potential toxicity are also denied. This is done so out of an abundance of caution to protect residents and their guests, maintenance workers, as well as pets.

Committee Corner

Health & Fitness Committee By Laurie Solomon

Thanks to the vendors and residents who attended our Health Fair in January. Kudos to everyone who donated blood. We are in the process of lining up Health Seminars of interest to residents for the Spring. As soon as they are finalized, we will post them in the Daily Update. Spring is the time of year that many people are looking to get outside and engage in the sport of golf. The main goal is to get a small ball into a hole utilizing a club. The tough part is to do it with as few strokes as possible. As Arnold Palmer stated, “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated”. A good golf swing requires rhythm, wrist speed, and somewhat of a forward thrust. Much of the movement and driving power comes from the lower body. The muscles involved include the buttocks, quadriceps, hamstrings, and lower back. Core muscle strength is crucial. The main core muscles that are engaged

during the golf swing include the rectus abdominis, the obliques (on the side of the upper body that help you twist), the muscles that run along your spine, and the pelvic floor muscles. A golf conditioning program can also include squats and/or lunges for the lower body. Bench pressing works the chest and triceps to improve your swing action. Bicep curls and wrist curls will strengthen the muscles in your upper arms and forearms. Stretching should focus on key areas such as the hamstrings, lower back, and shoulder area. Stretches should be repeated 2 or 3x and held for 20 to 30 seconds. Because of the repetitive movement involved in golf, strengthening and stretching the body will improve your game and keep you from getting injured. In addition to the physical side of golf there is also the mental synchronization and coordination involved in developing a successful golf swing. Balance and proprioception which is having an awareness of where your body is in space can help with your game. There are many pieces to put together, but they will all help improve your game while on the golf course.

Welcome Committee By Sue Joninas

Our Cresswind Welcome Committee is still reaching out to new residents with all of them being resales. Our members are sending cards, calling, and offering their support. We let the residents know they can call us, and we will help them in any way we can. We also find that neighbors on their street are reaching out to make them feel welcome. We hope some new residents will accept a visit very soon.

We will be holding a New Resident Orientation in late March for all new residents since November in the Ballroom at the Clubhouse. We will have several speakers with much more information about Cresswind and Gainesville. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four to six weeks of closing, please contact me at sjoninas@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents. Welcome to Cresswind!

Hearing Loss The underlying danger of not knowing how it can affect your overall health Mild hearing loss doubles dementia risk. Moderate loss tripled risk, and people with a severe hearing impairment were five times more likely to develop dementia. Brain scans show us that hearing loss may contribute to a faster rate of atrophy in the brain. Potential Sensorineural Causes

As you walk, your ears pick up subtle cues that help with balance. Hearing loss mutes these important signals. Poor hearing loss is often indicative of poor overall health. In addition to the brain issues that untreated hearing loss can cause is often associated with depression, debilitating falls, and a lower overall quality of life.

Architectural Review Committee (ARC) Submitted by: Louis McClure

Spring is in the air and so are home improvement projects. The ARC is always willing to discuss a project with the homeowner. The ARC is developing a sampling of completed projects and pictures to be added to the ARC Webpage. This will be a great source of ideas to consider when developing your project. The ARC will not recommend contractors for projects. It is always a good idea to take advantage of an ARC member’s knowledge and experience for your new project. A quick discussion with an ARC member can save you time, disappointment, and sometimes, expense down the road. Please remember that any changes to the exterior of a Cresswind at Lake Lanier residence requires ARC approval in advance of starting the work. This means that any modification, alteration, or addition of ornamentation of any type or size to your home that can be seen by you, a neighbor, or pedestrians, requires advance approval from the ARC. Please remember this includes our back yards, and includes statues, sculptures, bird baths, flowerpots, wind chimes, swings, benches, arbors, trellises, etc. This also includes replacement of items with an similar item, for example, outside garage lights. So, do not start beautifying your home exterior or yard until you have submitted a request to the ARC and received written approval from the community manager. If you don’t, you may be asked to remove the items and you may receive warning notices from the community manager. Fines can be levied if you fail to comply with the warning notices. My project will require the use of a dumpster or PODS, what do I need to know? Dumpsters and PODS must be approved by the ARC and require a $1,500 damage deposit (ARC-2). The homeowner is responsible for any damage caused by the delivery and pick up of the dumpster. The deposit is returned once the project has been completed and ARC has closed the request. Reminder: The dumpster or PODS must be placed in your driveway on plywood surface and must not block the sidewalk.

Page 14

Do I need to ask for approval if I am painting my house the exact same colors, including trim? Yes, you do. The Cresswind Community Manager uses your request for approval as a means of tracking when you last painted your house, so it is important for you to submit this request. However, once your request is submitted, you can immediately start painting. You will receive an approval letter from the Cresswind Community Manager, but you do not need to wait to receive the approval letter before you begin. Water Drainage Projects: Projects that may affect the natural water drainage on your property and neighboring property must be reviewed by the ARC Committee. Finished Projects: When your project(s) are complete, an ARC member will review the completed project(s). This is especially important to a homeowner if a security deposit is being held by the Front Office. It is the responsibility of the assigned ARC member to drive by, schedule a visit, or request pictures of the completed project to determine if the work was completed in accordance with the submitted request and approval letter. Once this is done, the assigned ARC member can close out the ARC request in the ARC tracking system. The ARC does our best to do this in a timely manner. Let’s be good neighbors and follow the approved Cresswind Rules & Regulations in developing our home projects. Submit an EIR-1 request for ALL exterior changes to your home including:  Exterior painting  Fencing  Roof replacement  Stone or paved walkways  Installation of porches/awnings  Deck staining

WHAT ARE THESE MEN DOING?

If you have ever experienced the frustration of faulty internet connectivity in the Clubhouse you will be happy to hear these men are installing new fiberoptic cable that will support the updated Information and Technology (IT) / Audio Visual (AV) proposal the Board recently approved. The includes AV equipment to provide everything needed to update and improve the internet and phone communication system, and the audio-visual capability needed for club presentations and entertainment in and around the clubhouse. Leo Cortjens, our resident technology expert, volunteered his career expertise to research and present the detailed proposals including: • Control System upgrade by Phoenix Systems • Chandelier replacement with flush mount lights • Installation of AV gear in new rack in closet (CPAC team) • Install lighting control in rack in closet (CPAC team) • Upgrade in ceiling speakers

• Dropdown platform/lift system for video projectors • Motorized dropdown video screen in back of ballroom • Upgrade front projector to 4k video • The improvements will benefit all and are expected to be completed early this year.

SAFETY! SAFETY!! SAFETY!!! Following numerous complaints of lengthy delays and dangerous backups onto Montgomery Road, the HOA Board approved action to begin closing the Montgomery Gate entrance to all visitors and vendors who do not have gate reader access. Residents are asked to get in the habit of giving their visitors directions to use the Brown’s Bridge Entrance. Once the repaving of Cresswind Parkway is complete, the Montgomery Gate keypad will be removed and only residents with windshield stickers and/or card readers will be granted access through the Montgomery Gate. Windshield stickers, which automatically opens the gate upon approach, are especially encouraged and can be ordered at the front desk for a nominal fee of $20.

FROM THE CLL RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS TEAM BUTTERFLIES…have long been associated with good omens, good things ahead, hope, and encouragement, etc. What better symbol to use to send good thoughts and Blessings to our CLL friends and neighbors. The CLL Random Acts of Kindness Project (RAOK) was conceived during the isolation and distress caused by COVID. Since mid-2021, a small team of us have been anonymously and randomly delivering “Butterfly Blessing” throughout our community. You may have looked out your window at night and discovered that a solar powered lighted butterfly, accompanied by a lighted flower and/or a small garden statue “magically” appeared in your front shrub bed. And then found outside of your front door a note card adorned with a beautiful photograph of an ACTUAL Cresswind BUTTERFLY, born, fed, and freed from our own CLL Community Garden! The card with its butterfly photo containing a poem and note inside, are meant for you to keep as a reminder that “Butterfly Blessings” have been sent your way. The “Blessings” reflected through the lighted butterfly in your shrub bed are for you and all passersby to enjoy. But know that it will soon “fly on magic wings” to Bless yet another of our Cresswind friends and neighbors!

SPRING FORWARD SUNDAY, MARCH 13TH!

March/April 2022

As we spring into Daylight Savings and look forward to a little more sunshine, this is also a great reminder to check our smoke detectors and change the batteries. Most of us will be up mulling about the house (in a sleep deprived stupor) adjusting every clock that isn’t satellite or computer chip controlled – they do still exist – so, why not add changing those batteries to the list of To Dos when Daylight Savings arrives?

CRESSWIND LADIES GOLF CLUB By Jill Loftus

Even when we are not playing golf, we are still playing golf. The Ladies Golf Club had a wonderful Christmas Party at Top Golf in Buford. We enjoyed seeing who could actually get the ball in the highest scoring hole and a wonderful lunch was provided by Top Golf. We had a White Elephant exchange which consisted of old golf equipment that you have not been using. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The Ladies Golf Club hosted our annual kick-off meeting February 7th at 11am. If you ever wanted to play golf or you haven’t played in years this is the group of Ladies you want to join. We have fun, we have laughs and we learn a little bit about golf. This 2022 season we will be playing at Royal Lakes Country Club in Oakwood. Our first T-time is around 10am. We play nine holes, sometimes we add a game to our play,

it may be best ball, closest to the pin, who kept the ball in the fairway etc. All for fun. Many of us get together for lunch either at the club or another restaurant afterwards. Plans are being made to occasionally play at Chattahoochee Golf Club with an 8am T-time. Nine and Dine will be taking place at Chattahoochee Golf Club. So, bring your husband or date for this event. It’s nine holes of play followed by a wonderful meal served at the club by a brand-new chef. More details on this to follow. Some of us keep score, some don’t, it doesn’t matter. We are out there to have fun and enjoy the sport. Please let us know if you would like to join us. Contact: Jill_Pastrick@yahoo.com.

Joninas, Treasurer -- Denise Samples. Our terrific group of board members have met and are planning some fun and creative activities for this year. Our “Kick Off Event” was an evening to Meet and Mingle at Cork It on the Gainesville Square. It was a fun time to re-connect, laugh, and share a glass of wine and stories with friends. We participated in our Cresswind Mardi Gras Parade and added some fun to the festivities. A few of our club ideas for this year include table decorating tips, a visit to Gibbs Gardens with lunch, attending a local theater performance, a styling in our jean’s presentation, our annual trip to AmericasMart Atlanta, and our Fall Fashion Show. So come join the fun and continue enjoying your Living Stylishly events with your wonderful Cresswind friends and neighbors. Dues -- $5 for the year, please make check payable to LSWN and drop in Living Stylishly mailbox in Clubhouse. Remember: good times with fun friends make the best memories!

Spring is just around the corner and that means it is time for Cresswind fishermen to get on the water to enjoy Lake Lanier’s famous spring bite. Winter has been spent building Crappie nests and maintaining the Cresswind aquarium. We are making plans for our club activities for 2022. To join the Fishing Club please email dr.johnkelley@gmail.com to be put on the email list. Pictures are of happy young fishermen and a big fish at our fish light.

Sports and Games Fantasy Football regular season and playoffs were completed. It was the most difficult season in our history. Covid and injuries played a major role in many outcomes. There were times when simply fielding a starting lineup was a challenge. Kudos to all of you for your perseverance. That being said, we made it through to the end. THE FALLS INVESTMENT CLUB By: David Binnix This is an invitation to join a unique group of investors that meets once a month to learn, evaluate, invest, prosper and have fun. Six years ago, when I joined The Falls Investment Club I was concerned, as I had zero experience and didn’t want to embarrass myself by not being able to contribute. The makeup of our club ranges from very experienced traders to folks just like me. After a short period of time with the advice, education and unselfish sharing of ideas I was actually able to recommend stocks and the Club’s current portfolio has had over an 80% gain in valuation. I belong to a lot of clubs but can tell you this club has been the most rewarding decision I’ve made at Cresswind. The club’s “dues” are actual contributions you and other members make to purchase stocks voted on by members. These contributions are $300 every six months. When you elect to leave the club, all of your contributions plus any appreciation are refunded to you. Right now, we have only a limited number of openings and would love for you to give us a try, simply visit us at the clubhouse on the 2nd Monday of each month at 6:30 pm (absolutely no pressure). Should you have any questions please text or call me at 678 231-4139 or email gdbinnix@icloud.com Dave Binnix

CRESSWIND GARDEN CLUB

INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS CLUB

Submitted by: Sarah Galshack

Submitted by: Tom Flaim

Greetings from Cresswind Community Garden Club. Here are some updates for all Cresswind residents: 1. If you are interested in gardening events and projects at the Community Garden and the Serenity Garden but do not rent a garden box, then you may want to sign up for our Friends of the Garden newsletter. Periodic newsletters will have information on upcoming garden events and activities. Email Dave Rusk at: dhrusk@ msn.com. 2. All residents are invited to our monthly Garden Club meetings. Watch the daily update for dates, times, and topics. 3. Hall County Master Gardeners have selected our Community Garden to be on their 2022 Garden Walk. There are six Hall County gardens that will be open to the public on May 21st. 4. We are looking into having a June tour of our own Cresswind backyard water features. 5. Be sure not to miss the Hall County Master Garden Spring Expo on April 1st and 2nd. It is held at Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center. We have had some cold days, but that gives us a chance to curl up with our garden catalogs and plan for the sweet Spring that is on its way!

Thank you to everyone for making 2021 such a success. The pictures are from Brisas del Mar, a very poor rural community in the Dominican Republic that now has clean drinking water for the first time – all made possible by Cresswind residents participating in our events and making donations. We have several awesome events planned for 2022. Join us for a great time and the opportunity to change the lives of another community and large children’s orphanage: Inaugural Bowling4Water – April 20 – An all-new event is open to anyone wanting to bowl the morning away at Station 300 in Gainesville. Contact John Shambach @ johns01@localnet.com Inaugural 2022 Senior Prom – June 18 – corsages, punch (spiked?), great dance music, outdoors and under the stars. Let’s go back to the late 1960’s for a traditional Senior Prom. Contact Julie Philpott at juliep3d@yahoo.com Walk4Water – September 24 – Back by popular demand with one-, two- or three-mile walk choices, full picnic on the Event Lawn, band, children’s playhouse and events, and more! Contact Julie Philpott @ juliep3d@yahoo.com Inaugural Fishing4Water – November 5 – An allnew event for those that would love to hook into a big one. We will pair anyone wanting to fish with a local captain for a great day on the lake. Contact John Devillez @ johndevillez@aol.com There is an opportunity to serve at all these events, and we need volunteers! Please contact the Event Leader listed to help us make these great times happen. And don’t forget, incredible Dominican Larimar and Amber Jewelry is available any time from Denise Samples @ denisesamples@yahoo.com.

THE RV CLUB “HOLIDAY LIGHTS IN NASHVILLE” By Priscilla Stockwell

Our most recent RV trip was to Nashville, Tennessee (home to Vanderbilt University). Two Rivers campground afforded four Cresswind Recreational Vehicles to visit the Grand Ole Opry Hotel and experience the festive lighting. Some of us used the trolley to view the many sights of downtown Nashville to include the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and historic Ryman Auditorium. Others walked the streets and listened to honky-tonks and live music. A trip to Paula Dean’s restaurant and store resulted in the purchase of products to be given as holiday gifts. Sharing RV adventures with friends is the best part of belonging to the RV Club! The following trips have been planned for 2022 • March 7 – March 13, 2022: Lazydays Resort (Seffner, Fl) • April 24 – April 28, 2022: Creek Fire (Savannah, Ga) • April 28 – May 2, 2022: Mt Pleasant (Charleston, Ga) • May 3 – May 6, 2022: Cape Hatteras Resort (Rodanthe, NC)

• September 10 – September 18, 2022: (Memphis, TN/ Arkansas) • October 13 – October 18, 2022: Gatlinburg, TN RV camping offers experiences to visit the uniqueness of each city/area and enjoy the outdoors. We welcome new members and ideas for future trips. Come join the group for an experience you won’t soon forget! SOCIAL SINGLES Submitted by: Elaine Vetter Social Singles started off 2022 with two of our more popular events. On January 9th we enjoyed pizza and salad before opening presents for the White Elephant Exchange. Lots of grins and giggles at some of the more questionable gifts and promises of recycling the ‘treasure’ at next year’s party. Let’s “Taco About Valentine” was the theme for our February gathering with a fajita bar catered by Moe’s and lots of games and prizes with the taco/valentine theme. We’ll test our cooking skills at our March event which is a Chili Cook-off fundraiser with the profits going to one of the local charities. The club is also participating in the neighborhood Mardi Gras parade with at least two golf carts decorated by our members. In addition to the monthly group gatherings, we’ve enjoyed several mid-week mingles in the Crows Nest during the winter and the guy’s

lunch/dinner outings have continued for the past few months. Hoping to restart the walking, lunch groups, bowling etc.… as weather and covid restrictions continue to improve. If you are single and would like to get involved, have ideas on how we can connect and/or want more information please access our link on the Cresswind website and share your contact information. We’d love to have you join us!

GENEALOGY CLUB By: Dave Dittmeier & Howie Muller

The 1950 Census: If you have an interest in Genealogy Research, an exciting event is happening this year. For those of us who were born between April 1940 through April 1950, we will be able to find ourselves listed on the 1950 Federal Census along with parents, siblings, and a host of other information. The Federal Population Census is released every 72 years. The first census was taken in 1790 and has been taken every ten years since. Because of a 72-year restriction on access to the Census, the most recent year available is 1940 and was released on 2 April 2012. The 1950 Census will be released on 2 April 2022. You will have to wait another 10 years to view the 1960 Census if you fall into that category. Want to learn more about researching your ancestors? We invite you to attend one of our monthly Genealogy meetings at the clubhouse at 7:00pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month.

UKULELE CLUB Submitted by: Dr. John Kelly

We had a fun holiday music sing-along in the Crow’s Nest. We welcome new players. Come Experience the fun of playing ukulele- a tiny but mighty package of fun!

Liars Club CPAC was proud to present the 4th Annual Liar’s Club in February of this year. It was a rousing and hilarious success, as usual. We expanded from two nights to three and we still virtually sold out! The audiences had a great time trying to guess who is telling the truth and some of them even had positive scores this year! Thank you to Marilyn Young and Denny Moore for putting together this production for the community. Also, thanks to our Liars: Russ Schussler, Laurie Schussler, Kathy Stoessel, Doug Geganto, Sandy St George, Jim Kalina, Julie Edmondson and Rod Quisenberry. Also thanks to our many ‘behind the scenes’ people that make this show possible. We look forward to seeing you next year for more lyin’, laughin’ and havin’ some fun!

PICKLEBALL CLUB

CRESSWIND PING PONG CLUB By Steven Gould

by Brenda Newman

ONE OF THE BEST EXERCISES FOR BRAIN HEALTH

In spite of the chilly North Georgia winter weather, Cresswind Pickleball players have been having a wonderful time on the courts. Our new Novice/Intermediate Open Play from 1-3pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday has been a great success. Lots of laughter, playing and new friendships have been made on the courts. Come on out and join us to get in on the fun! Our Pickleball courts have a new look!! Portable ball barriers have been added between the courts. These barriers prevent stray balls from rolling onto adjacent courts, providing safer and more enjoyable play. The first tournament of the year, The Polar Express Tournament was played on Jan 29th. Add to your calendar the dates for the Clay Myers Tournament on Saturday, March 26th and the Reed Tournament and Dinner on Saturday, October 15th. We are also looking forward to more Scrambles and Spring Leagues coming soon. To keep current on everything Pickleball at Cresswind, check out our new Facebook page “Cresswind at LL Pickleball Group”! See you on the courts!!

Of all the brain-boosting sports activities, table tennis reigns supreme. It is highly aerobic and requires tremendous coordination. Japanese researchers first recognized that the game activates as many as 5 separate areas of the brain simultaneously in a clinical study titled, “The Effectiveness of Exercise Intervention on Brain Disease Patients: Utilizing Table Tennis as a Rehabilitation Program”. The study found that ping-pong players with brain disease showed better brain function and awareness, as well as decreased dementia and depression. Ping-pong’s aerobic activity increases blood flow to the brain, which is associated with improved cognition, better memory, an increase of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and hippocampus neurogenesis, according to research. Just last year, preliminary research in Neurology presented on Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and table tennis showed that PD patients demonstrated significant improvements in speech, handwriting, getting dressed, getting out of bed, and walking after a 6-month regimen of regular ping-pong sessions. Table tennis is now used therapeutically to mediate the effects of neurodegenerative diseases. Most of these brain health benefits apply to all racquet sports, including popular and fast-moving pickleball, racquetball, and tennis. What’s more, they can be enjoyed by people of every age and have very few instances of brain injury! (From: amenclinics.com article) Come join the Ping Pong Club on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons from 3pm-6pm in the Lanier Room for open play. For those still working we have Monday evening from 7pm-8pm.

TENNIS CLUB By Sandy Barmak

The winter chill chased many of us from morning to afternoon tennis play. Yet, the brave ladies who played Round Robin early Thursday mornings (see photo), kept the courts warm. Now that warmer weather is coming, hopefully we can return to our routine of morning play. Spring weather is great for tennis before the summer heat arrives. Once again Bill Papciak and his team of skilled instructors will be offering tennis clinics that are open to the entire Cresswind community. If you always wanted to try out tennis, haven’t played in a few years and want to refresh your ability, or just want to upgrade your skills, our tennis clinics are for you. We offer instructors on three courts who work with players at different levels. Watch the daily update for details on upcoming clinics. If you want to practice your strokes and strategy, be sure to take advantage of our numerous “Open Play” times that are listed on the bulletin board outside of Court 1 and on our website. Our Mixed Doubles League, for tennis club members only, will be starting in March. Once again, we will have two teams playing each other for some friendly competition. Look for announcements soon about Men’s Silverball and Women’s 3.0 USTA league formation. League play begins in March. Our new Social Committee Chairs, Judy Cox and Judy Mota, are busy planning this year’s social events. We have some upcoming weekend Round Robin events for exciting tennis play, lots of time to socialize and to get to know our fellow tennis club members better. Invitations to participate in the League and Round Robin social will be sent to all Tennis Club members. To stay up to date on tennis events check out our website, https://cresswindll.wixsite. com/cwtennis. You can also contact our President, Sandy Barmak at sandybarmak@gmail.com.
