… from the Desk of Kitti Kleinedler The Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, is quoted as saying “change is the only constant in life.” Boy, isn’t that the truth. Seasons change. Careers change. Rules change. Friends and neighbors change. Even the Montgomery/Brown’s Bridge intersection changed. Our lifestyle and habits certainly have changed in the past 18 months too. Some say the change is harder as one gets older or you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. Yet here we are adapting every day to the changes around us. And doing a pretty good job at it too! The phase 1 residents who have been here 10 + years have seen plenty of changes right here within our own Cresswind gates. In the five years I have been here, I have seen this community grow from 700 plus homes with prospective buyers coming and going, to a fully built out stable community of 940 residences. And now I am seeing some of those people move on again. Change. It is all around us. I want to give a shout out to all of you for your adaptability to change. You are still here, smiling and embracing the best that Cresswind has to offer. And as time goes on and changes arise, we will continue to accommodate them the best way possible because we are Cresswind Strong!

The President’s View By Dan Gershkovitz

Perseverance and Expectations: Cresswind at Its Best The experts define the terms “Perseverance” and “Expectations” as follows: Perseverance - continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition - the action or condition or insistence or persevering -: steadfastness Expectations - the act or state of mind looking forward to something good happening: what you believe or hope will happen in the future Perseverance and Expectations – These terms are not new to us, as each of us has experienced, lived, and have benefited or changed because of them. From Cresswind’s earliest days, Perseverance and Expectations were the watchwords and actions of our Original Residents. The troubling and tumultuous times set the stage and tone during those years. Their strength and commitment held this community together which again gained a new lease on life when the Kolter Developers had the foresight, energy, and perseverance, to reset the expectations for our community. The die had been cast at that point and we can all look back at those days and actions and regale at how our community has evolved, grown, and permitted each of us to have our dreams, aspirations, and expectations fulfilled. This dedication and commitment continue today as many of the original founding families have commenced the Heritage workgroup to capture, organize, and prepare documents to memorialize and recount our past. Hopefully, we will add new residents to this effort to continue this effort and carry it through to the present to maintain the history and chronology of our great Cresswind Community We need to be grateful for the path that our community has traversed with the participation of all our residents. We also need not forget our recent and ongoing battle with COVID-19 and the current battle with the offshoot virus strains which are now returning with a vengeance and ferocity not seen in recent memory. Additionally, our community, including Hall County and the City of Gainesville have become the beneficiaries of our resident’s benevolence, community involvement, support, and volunteerism. We have always had high expectations for ourselves, and we continue to persevere in our efforts to better assist our residents and local area needs. We all somehow arrived at Cresswind over the years and brought with us our experiences, expertise, expectations, and enthusiasm for what lies ahead. Our prior lives begin to fade away as we embrace all Cresswind has to offer and continue to strive to improve our community to be better every day. It is the relentless perseverance of excellence and community which drive and motivates our actions – New Clubs – New Events – New Experiences – New Adventures these result from our collective energies and spirit. As we enter the fall of 2021, we have developed our respective expectations for ourselves, our families and friends, and our community. We have also put on hold many actions and activities with the expectations that we would be able to realize them in the upcoming months: the reality is we may be able to pursue our individual dreams, but with more detailed planning as we watch the growing concerns with the spread of the Covid – 19 Delta Variant. I believe we will address this new virus strain as we have in the past with vigilance, proper behaviors and attitudes, and concern for one another. We all need to be able to accept whatever challenges we individually or collectively will be confronting in the months ahead. They are not known to us now, so our responses will have to evolve as we confront what life throws our way. Our resilience, fortitude, perseverance, support networks, and inner personal strength have helped us through those dark times. Our greatest successes evolve from the worst and most difficult of times. We need to remember that each of us in own way will experience some difficult times and can benefit from the care and concern we have and express towards each other. Going forward, let us commit to be a bit more caring, sharing, compassionate, and committed to be the best we can be for ourselves, our community, and our neighbors. Page 6

Committee Corner ARC and Landscape Committee Review

By Linda Furgerson

Requesting approval for any type of exterior improvement projects has just gotten much easier for everyone. The members of the both the Architectural Review Committee and the Landscape Committee are proud to announce the implementation of a single, multi-purpose form to request approval for any type of exterior improvement. This new form, the Exterior Improvement Request Form, is now in place and ready for use. It can be found on the Cresswind website under Resources>E FORMS. Previously, if a homeowner wanted to do improvements that involved both hardscape and landscape materials they had to complete and submit separate forms for each type. Not only was this confusing and seemed repetitive for the homeowner, it was also potentially a logistical nightmare for everyone involved in processing, reviewing, and approving the requests. About a year ago representatives from both groups began working together to develop a multi-purpose form for exterior improvements. Their goal was to make things easier for all involved in this process, starting with the homeowner. The resulting form provides additional clarity and information regarding the Architecture and/or Landscape application process and its requirements. This additional clarification helps ensure that the initial requests are more complete and include all the required supporting documents and descriptions. The Exterior Improvement form can be used for, Architectural requests, Landscape requests, or “crossover” requests that include aspects of both. Architectural requests (hardscape) can include, but are not limited to:

• • • • •

Exterior painting and/or deck staining Fencing Roof replacement Stone or paved walkways Installation of porches/awnings

Landscape requests can include, but are not limited to:

• Tree and shrub installation and/or removal • Redesign of existing landscape • Addition or expansion of new flower beds

Examples of “crossover” requests include changes to landscape materials that also include installation of/ changes to:

• • • • • •

Pavers Rocks Edging Dry creek beds Sidewalks Drainage or erosion control

“Crossover” requests could also be installation of, or changes to, hardscape but also include the installation of plant materials.

Committee Corner Architectural ReviewCommittee Committee (ARC) By LouisBy McClure Architectural Review (ARC) Louis McClure The following Sections of the Cresswind Rules & Regulations have been revised.

MAILBOX MAINTENANCE

All residences shall properly maintain a uniform mailbox conforming to those used throughout Cresswind and conforming to postal rules and regulations. Proper maintenance includes maintaining the mailbox in good working order, free from debris and bird droppings, keeping numbers intact, maintaining the mailbox and post finish, and repainting periodically. The original color of the mailboxes is powder coat satin black. The approved color for repainting is Rust Oleum Black Semi-Gloss 2x UltraCover Paint + Primer. The area where your mailbox is located is part of the Cresswind common areas and no plantings or borders of any type may be used around the base of the mailbox.

DRIVEWAY RESURFACING

Two important points to remember: all work must be approved by the ARC before and after the resurfacing process, and sidewalks are common property and cannot be resurfaced or colored.

This change allows for competitive pricing among providers, addressing residents’ concerns of cost, while maintaining standards. Driveway resurfacing must be done by a professional contractor. Stardek I Spray Texture is the only resurfacing material to be used to maintain the quality, color, and consistency throughout the community. 1) Stardek I is distributed through Concrete Resurfacing Products, Inc., exclusive licensee in Georgia. 2) The only approved color is Concrete. Concrete color is a custom blend of 50% Champagne and 50% Smoke. September/October 2021

3) The application is a multi-step process to be followed by the contractor to ensure consistent quality (recommended by Distributor). a) b) c) d) e) f)

Committee Corner Covenants, Rules and Regulations Committee

By Mario Russo

Here is a great, recent example of how the Rules & Regulations process can work in a supportive way within our community. Rule 5-2.3 [Page 49 in Rules & Regs] essentially states no change in elevation from the Kolter model’s package is allowed. For models like the Ashford, Cypress, Elmwood, Maple and Redwood, the Kolter package did not include a pergola over the garage as an option. A fellow resident wanted to add a pergola to their Cypress home and filed an ARC request. It was denied due to rule 5-2.3. The resident filed an appeal with the CRRC. We reviewed the appeal via the CRRC Appeal Process and determined it was something that should be considered. The CRRC recommended to the Board to review in favor of the appeal. CRRC does not have appeal approval jurisdiction. In the end, the Board voted to approve a like pergola that is allowed on other elevations! From this scenario the CRRC is now reviewing rule 5-2.3 for possible revision considerations to present to the Board for approval. As always, if we can answer any questions about Rules & Regulations, feel free to contact a committee member. Our member’s roster and mission statement can be found on the Cresswind website. Go to “INFO” tab, then “COMMITTEES”, select “Covenants and Rules and Regulations Committee.” In this Newsletter’s “Did You Know” section: [Rules from the Rules & Regs you may not be aware of] Brought to by John Peterson 2-1.6. Guest Policy (Page 16) (a) General (1) Each household is allowed four non-resident guests except for events that are open to “Friends and Family.” An increase may be approved by the Management Company, if warranted. (2) Residents are responsible for their guests’ actions and for informing them of these Rules and Regulations. (3) Guests, accompanied by a resident, are permitted in all public areas of the Amenity Complex with certain age or hour restrictions as posted. (4) Guests must be accompanied by a resident and remain in proximity of the resident at all times. (b) Guest Registration Policy (1) Sign in at front desk. (2) Sign a CLL-12 Guest Informed Consent Waiver and Release Agreement (one time only). (3) Obtain a wristband or name tag. Chapter 6-1 Traffic 6-1.1. Rules (a) The Cresswind Community will follow the same traffic rules as those in effect for the City of Gainesville. Cresswind residents are expected to obey posted speed limits, traffic signs, give the right of way in a traffic circle (round-a-bout), and be both courteous and cautious when operating a motor vehicle in our community. (b) If upon arrival at the entry gate, the gate is in an up position as the result of another resident having just proceeded through the gate, the second resident if they have a RFID windshield transponder, may immediately proceed through the gate with caution without waiting for the gate to close first. This only applies for those residents with a RFID windshield transponder. Vendors, non-residents, and residents without a RFID windshield transponder must stop and wait for the gate to close and reopen prior to entering. (Revised 02/01/2021) (c) Except as noted in section 6-1.1. (b), only one vehicle should enter or/and exit through the community gates at a time. Attempting to improperly tailgate through the gates can result in the gate dropping down and damaging the car and/or gate. The cost of repairs, if needed, to the gate as a result of attempting to tailgate through the gates will be chargeable to the home-owner. The HOA will not be responsible for any damage to the car as a result of improper gate entering or/and exiting. Page 12 The WATERFALL September/October 2021

Education Committee:

Committee Corner By Betsy Robertson

Driver safety, Tech Help programs coming this fall The AARP and your Cresswind Education Committee are teaming up to present a safety course this fall designed specifically for drivers over 50. The class, tentatively scheduled for Sept. 28th, includes research-based information on safe driving strategies, plus ways to reduce distractions while on the road; effects of medication on driving; proper use of common technology in newer vehicles; techniques for handling roundabouts; and rules of the road pertaining to cell phone usage, among other topics. A whopping 97 percent of participants have reported changing at least one driving habit as a result of completing the course, according to AARP officials. Watch for more in the Daily Update. Other upcoming programs include the Cresswind Volunteer Fair on Oct. 9th; a digital book-borrowing tutorial presented by the Hall County Library System on Oct. 21th; a series of workshops on how to detect tech-related scams (dates/times TBA); and a first-responders appreciation event in December. Education Committee programs this year have covered a variety of topics, from fall prevention to self-defense and estate planning. Programs are open to all Cresswind residents; presentations are typically free but occasionally offered at a nominal cost.

Welcome Committee News

By Sue Joninas

The Cresswind Welcome Committee is still reaching out to new residents with all being resales. Our members are sending cards, calling, and offering their support. We let the residents know they can call us and we will help them in any way we can. We also find that neighbors on their street are reaching out to make them feel welcome. The Welcome Committee has taken over doing tours for new residents in the clubhouse as well as outside of the clubhouse. We will be holding a New Resident Orientation on November 10, 2021 for all new residents since April, 2021. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four to six weeks of closing, please contact me at sjoninas@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents. Welcome to Cresswind!

The Women’s Bible Study meets Thursdays from 4-5pm in the Savannah Room. They are studying the New Testament beginning with Matthew and will move along at a pace to answer everyone’s questions. This is an interactive study with facilitators. The Men’s Bible Study meets Fridays from 10-11am in the Savannah Room. They completed a study of the Book of James and are now into the Book of Matthew. The Way Bible Study will be beginning a six-week study of either the Book of James or Romans (participation is limited to 25) While Couples continue to meet throughout the community in private homes, the Great Pine Couples Bible Study is meeting in the Lanier Room every other Tuesday at 7:00pm. What’s Happening

Here is What’s Happening in The Cooking Club You may have heard residents enjoyed our first Resident led cooking event on July 18th. Italian Night provided everyone a taste of Italian cuisine, while they nibbled on Bruschetta and Biscotti for dessert. The Garden to Table Party moved inside the Clubhouse due to weather. This did not dampen our spirits. We enjoyed an array of fresh salads, dirt cake parfait, and white wine Sangria while our Jazz Band played on. We are working on posting all the recipes from this event. We will keep you informed when it is available.

By Lisa Giblin

The Cooking School offered three classes that included Afternoon Tea, Seasonal Delights, and German Classics. As one resident stated the “clotted cream” in the Afternoon Tea class reminded her of home. I think that is a stamp of approval. Upcoming events that are planned include our Fish Fry on September 10th. It is an event that is enjoyed by many. On October 2nd, we will be hosting Oktoberfest. Cooking Club members should look for the event details.

Everyone is on pins-and-needles in anticipation of his arrival as he will announce who, of the three nominees, will get a milliondollar endowment. There is only one problem! He does not show up? Why is that? What happened to him? It will be up to YOU to decide. Pay attention to the clues as the friends and family mingle during the Welcome Reception. After the dinner portion, you will hear many reasons and accusations as far as what happened and who may have done it. During the dinner break, the detective invites audience members to review a case File, then submit their guess as to who may be the culprit. Did we say that this is a DINNER theatre? Yup, we will be feeding you also. The party is November 18th through 20th starting at 6pm in the Ballroom.

Greetings from the Cresswind Garden Club

By Sarah Galshack

When we are still having 90-degree days, it is hard to think of September bringing us cooler days that will be so enjoyable for garden activities. It is coming, however, and here are some things everyone in the Cresswind neighborhood can look forward to: 1. Scarecrows will come alive in the Common Ground Community Garden! October will be the month and stay tuned for the dates. Time for clubs, neighbors, boxholders, grandchildren, committees, even individuals to create a plan for a scarecrow. We hope to have lots of participants. Watch for more details in the Daily Update. 2. Fall is when it is time to swap out our summer annuals (petunias, impatiens, zinnias, for example) with cool weather annuals (like pansies, or snapdragons). To help with this, the Garden Club will have an October plant sale of winter annuals. Watch the Daily Update for more information. 3. Since the cool weather is coming, it will be time for the garden boxholders to clean out the summer vegetables and replace with cool weather veggies. We are lucky in North Georgia to have three seasons in which to plant and harvest fresh vegetables. If you are interested in renting a garden box, then you need to contact Garden manager Susan Dodd to be placed on the waiting list. 4. It is always interesting to visit the garden and check out the Butterfly Education Station. Lance Haney specializes in Monarchs but there are other species of butterflies that are released into the garden. He will post on our Cresswind Facebook pages when releases are scheduled. 5. If you are out for a walk on these warm days, take a stroll through the Serenity Garden located next to the Community Garden. The native plants have benefitted from our rainy July and are looking more estalished.

So, sit a spell and enjoy the peace.

THE DASH

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning… to the end. He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.

by Linda Ellis

much time is left that still can be rearranged. To be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile… remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.

For that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth.

So, when your eulogy is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash, would you be proud of the things they say about how you lived your dash?

For it matters not, how much we own, the cars… the house… the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.

Want to learn more about your ancestors?? Join the Genealogy Club or contact one of the co-hosts. ~ Howie Mueller or Dave Dittmeier

So think about this long and hard; are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how Page 36

Cresswind Kayak Club (CKC) Cresswind Kayakers have been out on the lake quite a bit this summer, despite some challenging weather especially on our Saturday morning 9am and Tuesday evening 7:30pm outings. With the completion of the project that added 22 more vertical kayak storage racks, many more people can enjoy the convenience of staging their boat at the marina. (see photos). We now have 58 vertical racks and 12 horizontal racks to support over 145 Kayak Club members. There are almost 40 new members this year who are adding a lot to our club. All costs were covered by the Cresswind Kayak Club. Due to confined work space and potential safety concerns, the major work was done by an approved properly insured contractor. The Kayak Club will do painting and slot numbering scheduled for 9/13 – 9/17 and 9/20 - 9/22.

By Mark Nestle

Some of the activities planned for the balance of this year, but weather and COVID-19 may present challenges: • Community Kayak Day in September; an orientation to kayaking for newly interested folks, • Paddle with brunch at Skogie’s in October, • General Membership Meetings with the semian nual vertical slot lottery on November 16th. We encourage Cresswind kayakers, whether CKC members or not, to coordinate their own different kayak outings, beyond those sponsored by the Club, to take full advantage of the collective experience, and create more networking opportunities to paddle together. We would enjoy hearing your ideas for Club activities that we might try in the upcoming months. Please send to: Cresswind.kayak.club@gmail.com. 10 SLOT AND 6 SLOT PROPOSED LOCATION

Watch for more details in the Daily Update. Any questions, call Diana Thurmon at 678-481-7644. This is sponsored by the Artist Corner Club.

Cresswind Veterans Club It has been a slow quarter for us, given several circumstances that we are all going through. The Covid virus, subsequent spike in cases, and the governments additional payments along with eviction bands have really driven the demand for our assistance down. We have served one veteran recently who has a handicapped son and needed financial aid for his grocery budget. We continue to review cases of veterans in need and help as we can. We also continue our mentoring efforts, but that too has had little demand. With Hall County courts returning to requiring masks in court, that demand may be slowed for a while.

Page 40

Recently, we have had a couple of new members join, have continued collecting donations to help others down the road, and last quarter we experienced our big raffle for the year (thanks to the Kalina family for donating the week’s stay at Hilton Head). We were also able to gather as members for our quarterly meeting and hear from the manager at VA Oakwood. If you missed that and need her help, let me know and I will provide her contact info. Not sure when we will be able to have our next meeting…your Board is working on that. Meanwhile, stay safe!

Pickleball News

By Pat Burke

If you had not noticed (maybe you have not been out of the house the last two weeks), the “dog days” of pickleball are here! Playing in 85+ degree weather with 70 % humidity really takes a toll on one’s mind and body quickly. So, watch out for your playing partners, especially during this time of year. I speak from experience! Many pickleball club activities are scheduled for late summer and this fall. The Dr. DeCook Round Robin on August 21st features a series of games between the doc and several associates with 12 of his Cresswind patients. The “beer league” is planning a birthday bash for Steve D’Eloia and Joe Tracy the evening of September 2nd. The Reed Tournament and Banquet are being organized by Brenda Newman and her band of volunteers for Saturday, September 18th. A big day of pickleball activities is planned! And finally, Kolter’s Cresswind Cup will be held at the Hoschton Twin Lakes pickleball complex the weekend of October 8th and 9th. This corporate-wide tournament will draw pickleball players of all levels from a number of Kolter developments in the Southeast. Finally, this November, several Pickleball Club Board positions will be up for renewing or filling. Now is a good time to start thinking about what role you want to play in our evolving Pickleball Club. So, attention, all you Cresswind pickleball dogs. Grab your teammates and start prepping for these upcoming events. And be prepared to shed lots of “blood, sweat and tears!”

Tennis Update

We managed to survive the summer’s heat and humidity as we sweated on the courts but we enjoyed the exercise. We are all glad that the cooler weather of fall is here so we can enjoy more tennis play time. Remember, open play begins at 9am on Monday for ladies, Wednesday for men, and Friday is mixed doubles. We also have mixed doubles open play on Wednesday evening at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm to accommodate those tennis players who still work. When enough players attend, we try to match skill levels, so come out and join the fun and get some exercise.

By Sandy Barmak

Despite the heat several tennis clinics were held during July and August. We thank clinic director Bill Papciak and his dedicated instructors: Jeff Agnew, Gene Evans, Jim Snell, Harry Takemura, and John Ulam, for their time and efforts. Thanks to them many of us learned new skills, polished up our game, and learned some strategies to make us better players. Fall is the beginning of competitive team play. Silverball plays Monday mornings against other similar communities and is a fun way to meet tennis players outside of Cresswind. Dan Skeels is the captain of our Silverball team. The ladies are playing USTA 55+, also on Monday mornings. If you are not participating, we hope you will come out and cheer for our teams when they play at home. For more information about tennis events check out our website, https://cresswindll.wixsite.com/cwtennis. You can also contact our president, Sandy Barmak at sandybarmak@gmail.com.

Apparently, just because we lived through the 50s, 60s and 70s that does not mean we knew the answers to questions from that era! Lots of laughter along with major head scratching trying to remember what at one time we knew we would never forget. Summer activities also included several bowl painting parties with the finished products going to the North Georgia Mountain Food luncheon which will be held in late September.

The fall schedule continues to take shape and will include the usual walks/hikes, bowling, mingles, group lunches and dinners plus plans are being finalized for a day at Don Carter State Park. We also hope to reschedule the rained-out trip to Gibbs Gardens and possibly a tubing trip down the Chattahoochee River in Helen. If you are single and would like more information or would like to join the fun, please access our link on the Cresswind website and share your contact information. We would love to have you join us. Community Travel Club There is still an opportunity to join the Community Travel Club (CTC) for our last quarter trips. On September 8th, we head to Atlanta to cheer on our Eastern Division Champion Atlanta Braves vs Washington Nationals. The Truist Park stadium’s tasty food, enthusiastic Braves fans, and terrific team are all a thrill to be a part of and enjoy! On October 20th, we head back to Atlanta to visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. The Gardens are always stunning, but this year, as part of the exhibition, oversize glass flowers designed by contemporary artist Jason Gamrath will grace them. His exhibitions are always worth the visit. October is also the month when the gardens come alive with scarecrows. It is fun to pick your favorite from the many handcrafted scarecrows which are created by multiple organizations, companies, and charities in the Atlanta Metro area. Join us on November 9th for an adventure on the Blue Ridge Railway to view the beauty of autumn colors as we travel along the Toccoa River

in the North Georgia Appalachian foothills. There will be a stop in the quaint town of McCaysville for shopping and lunch. Cresswind’s December holidays are always made special with our annual Christmas trip. This year we will be visiting Charleston. No matter how often you visit, it never gets old. There is always something new and exciting to see and do. Southern Living magazine rates Charleston as one of its top choices to visit at Christmas. The city shows off its festive spirit with holiday lights and all the trimmings. Please consider joining us on this trip. To find out more information and to sign up for any of these trips, please go to the CTC website on the Cresswind website and press on the specific trip link of your choice for additional information. To participate in any CTC trip, you must be a CTC member, which is easily done by writing a check to CTC for $5.00 per person. Please mark your calendar for the first Thursday of each month at 4:00pm for our General Meetings. Hope to see you there!
