NORTHERN BRITISH COLUMBIA LARGER than California, Northern British Columbia extends up to the Yukon/ Alaska border with sweeping glaciated valleys, volcanic rock formations, towering mountain ranges and mist-shrouded coast. Some highlights include Monkman Provincial Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park and the epic 2,237 km (1,387 mi) Alaska Highway. Northern BC is also home to the ancient Great Bear

Rainforest and the Haida Gwaii archipelago — where you’ll find one of the last authentic examples of a coastal First Nations village. Let’s explore some popular areas in Northern BC 6

at a time—can be seen flying overhead in spring and summer. NORTHERN ROCKIES & ALASKA HIGHWAY - A HISTORIC ROUTE THROUGH THE WILDERNESS OF THE NORTHERN CANADIAN ROCKIES Traveling on the Alaska Highway through British Columbia offers visitors a stretch of road that travels through some of the world’s most wildly beautiful areas, filled with jawdropping scenery, wildlife sightings and communities with frontier roots. The route winds through vast expanses of rolling prairie and boreal forest, past the upper reaches of the northern Rocky Mountains, beginning at “Mile 0” in Dawson Creek. Nearby is the Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark, home to unique geology and palaeontology including dinosaur tracks and fossils. Muncho Lake Provincial Park offers excellent fishing and camping spot along the long, jadegreen lake, while the hot springs at Liard River are without question one of the most popular stops on the Alaska Highway. STEWART-CASSIAR & HIGHWAY 16 - A VAST AND VARIED LANDSCAPE OF WILDERNESS AND WILDLIFE The northwest of British Columbia is vast, stretching up to the Yukon/Alaska border, with a bit of everything— dramatic glaciated valleys, volcanic rock formations, mountain ranges, and mist-shrouded rainforest, anchored by the outdoor community of Smithers and port city of Prince Rupert.

HAIDA GWAII - A VIBRANT CULTURE SET IN DRAMATIC LANDSCAPE With deep moss-covered rainforest and ancient village sites, Haida Gwaii can feel mythic. This storm battered archipelago of 150 rocky islands off British Columbia’s West Coast is Haida territory and tricky to access, only adding to its allure. The area is nicknamed Canada’s Galapagos for its diverse plant and animal life, and the totem pole and longhouse remains are some of the oldest authentic examples of coastal First Nations villages.

While BC has lots of remote and wild, TatshenshiniAlsek Provincial Park stirs the spirit, elevating that to a whole other level. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its immense river network and diversity of animal life, including the blue-ish glacier bear. North Tweedsmuir Provincial Park is also a remote wonderland, with only two ways in, by boat, or by float plane. This area’s wild forest, mountain, and coastal landscape make it an ideal destination for a road trip.

The islands are home to dramatic landscapes, abundant wildlife, and some of the world’s richest heritage treasures with more than 500 archeological sites. Haida Gwaii’s climate produces lush vegetation and abundant wildlife. Groups of Sitka deer feed on the grassy clearings along the Queen Charlotte Highway, and eagles—often hundreds

JAS OBEROI stepped into the real-estate industry in 2016. As a new immigrant from India, Jas has worked very hard to make his mark in his newly adopted homeland. He came to Canada in 2009 and started working in an Indian restaurant as a server. Being a hardworking individual, Jas opened his own restaurant in Surrey in 2013. Getting into real estate was natural for Jas because his family back in India is in the real estate industry and he too was inclined towards it. Once he had established his restaurant, he decided to venture into the real estate industry here in Canada. Jas says, “Back in India, my family used to do a lot of real estate investing and private lending, so real estate was not new to me. It had always been at the back of my mind to get into the real estate

business here; I was just waiting for the right time.” In an interview with The Times of Canada, Jas discusses his commitment to excellence in customer service. Jas’ pride for his work is evident in the shine that appears in his eyes when starts narrating his journey so far. It is his devotion to his career that has given him so much success in a short time. Talking more about his business goals and mission, Jas makes it clear he leaves no room for error when it comes to purchasing or sale for his customers. An enthusiastic broker known for his extensive market knowledge and his devotion to clients, Jas has earned the respect of his clients and a lot of referral business. He works tirelessly on behalf of his customers and aims for the best value.

that no matter how busy I am, I can always take the time and return their calls. WHAT STRATEGIES ARE YOU USING TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS? Word of mouth is a critical part of my marketing; it is the best strategy in any business. I am a client-oriented person, and for me, my client’s best interests are my top priority. My past clients are the ones who keep sending me referrals. They would only recommend me to their friends if I did my job and acted in their best interest.

AS A REALTOR, IS THERE SOMEONE IN THE INDUSTRY WHO INSPIRES YOU? All of the top producers are my inspiration. I look up to them, and it makes me feel more confident that if they can do it, I can too. Their success inspires me. HOW HAS YOUR LIFE BEEN AS A REALTOR? Busy, but I love it. There is a lot of effort and hard work behind my success. Nothing has come my way easily, but that’s life. To be successful, you have to be committed and give 100% and nothing less if you are serious. THERE ARE SO MANY REALTORS IN THE LOWER MAINLAND, WHY SHOULD SOMEONE PREFER YOU? Honesty, Integrity, and Commitment. These three words are the core principles by which I run my business. To me, it’s not about a deal with my client; it’s about building a strong and trusting relationship with that person. I have sold more than 150 homes so far, and I can put this on record: not even a single client of mine (past or present) can say that they didn’t have a pleasant experience working with me. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON CONCERNS OF A CLIENT? Honesty and Communication. Unfortunately, in our business, communication with clients is a big problem; they often feel that they are left out of the loop. Clients in this business want better service standards. I guarantee my clients that if I don’t return their call in 24 hours; I will pay them $500 cash. That’s how much confidence I have

Jas Oberoi’s new office

WHAT ARE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AS A REALTOR UP UNTIL NOW? I would not have achieved anything if it were not for my clients putting their trust in me and allowing me to earn their business. I have received several awards including: the RE/MAX Hall of Fame Award, the Diamond Award at RE/MAX Blueprint Realty, and the Chairman’s Club Award from RE/MAX. I also ranked as one of the Top 100 Realtors in all of RE/ MAX Western Canada and am a proud member of the Medallion Club-2019. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS AND TEN YEARS? I don’t plan that far ahead. I set my goals for every year and try to do better than where I was in my previous year — one thing at a time. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM THIS CAREER? Real estate is a very time demanding and stressful business, but it allows you to be a part of such a big decision that affects someone’s happiness. I love the feeling at the time of Possession when I see the smile on my clients face.

This is the best business that you can be in. It rewards your hard work. To achieve success, you have to be focused and determined. At the beginning of your career, you may be faced with a lot of challenges, and things might not go your way. If you have the attitude of never give up, you will come out with flying colors. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE CONDITION OF THE REAL ESTATE MARKET IN THE LOWER MAINLAND, AND WHAT WILL BE ITS FUTURE? In my opinion, real estate is not a short-term investment. If you have a plan or could hold a property for five years, it doesn’t matter what price you bought it for, it’s always going to sell for higher than that. There is a saying, “The Best time to buy Real Estate was always five years ago,” which means you won’t get the same price. As far as the future of real estate in the Lower Mainland is concerned, it’s quite bright. Look at the population, how rapidly it’s growing, we are less on the Inventory so the prices are going to go up; it won’t go as fast as it did in 2016, but it will go up. Now is the best time to buy real estate as we are currently in Buyer’s market and you can get great deals on some of the properties. I always say that if you are a smart investor, buy real estate when no one is buying, that’s when you make money.

SANDEEP SINGH Spinning around the world records DRIBBLING and shooting are the most common and conventional basketball skills that you would like to master once you start playing the game. But there is one man from Abbotsford, who is setting and breaking records for his unconventional and yet very impressive basketball skills. Meet 25-year old Sandeep Singh who has mastered the art of spinning the basketball on fingers and even on toothbrush for longest periods of time. He has become the invincible champion of spinning a basketball that his name has found its place in Limca and Guinness Books of World Records. Singh hails from Village Badduwal near Moga district in Punjab. He used to practice Volley ball shooting in India. “After the game when I would have enough time to hold

the ball in my hand, I would spin the ball on my finger. Then along with playing volley ball, I started practicing the spinning. In 2015 I watched a video of David Cain of US on Youtube. He spun football on his index finger for 33 seconds. I was very much inspired and encouraged to perform something similar. In 2016 I tried to spin Volley ball for 45 seconds,” he said. Sandeep first aimed for the national records. But since they did not have any category of volley ball spinning, he was offered to perform the feat either with soccer ball or basketball. “I decided to go with basketball,” he said. He spun three basketballs on two toothbrushes and one hand for 19 seconds in February 2017. Sandeep then applied for the Guinness record. It was in April 2017, when he broke the record for longest duration 14

Singh managed to keep the ball rotating for an incredible 53 seconds. Singh’s attempt was nearly nine times longer than the previous record of 6.84 seconds. “It was my dream to break a world record,” he said. After his impressive performance in India, Singh moved to Abbotsford, Canada in August 2017. It was not enough for him just to sit down and celebrate his achievement. He started practising again. In December 2017, he broke his own record for longest duration spinning a basketball on a toothbrush for 60.50 seconds. He says there is no other world record that has been broken and then recreated for 10 times except this one. Sandeep says it is a skill that is a gift from God to him which he discovered with time. A proud Punjabi, he wants to do new experiments with his skills around the world and take it to newer levels. This popular record has spun its way around the world since 2012, being attempted and broken many times starting with.... • • • •

About Us Kids Play Foundation is a non-profit organization committed towards keeping kids away from the lifestyle of drugs, gangs, and violence, by reinforcing a sense of belonging and self-worth in vulnerable youth. Thus far, with over 700 volunteer members, spearheading over 120 projects and 200 events, Kids Play Foundation has impacted over 60,000 youth through free programs since inception in 2015. The bedrock and fundamental principle of these programs is to establish a rapport with the youth through the medium of sports. Organized sports are being used throughout the world as a dynamic mechanism to engage youth of all races, genders, and classes. Through the initiative of providing the youth with an opportunity to play in organized sports tournaments, we strive to bridge a gap between the youth and adults in a constructive manner. In doing so, providing young people with a positive identity and feelings of empowerment, whilst developing sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork and self governance skills. Kids Play’s ever-growing family includes, veteran law enforcement officer and Kids Play founder and CEO, Kal Dosanjh; Ambassador, Wally Oppal; the first ever Indian basketball player to play in the NBA, Satnam Singh; Indo-Canadian professional wrester, Jinder Mahal; the Whitecaps; the BC Lions; the Vancouver Giants, Vancouver Canucks, Hockey Canada as well as a team of decorated volunteers, all working tirelessly towards one common goal: the youth. So what motivates us? We’ve all been directly or indirectly effected by the havoc wreaked by youth gang violence, and if we can play a small role in deterring even one youth from going down the path of no return, we've succeeded. However, if we can engage our youth in creating a movement and ridding our community of the youth and gang violence epidemic at its root, well, we just saved an entire generation. In the face of adversity, its time to come together and claim back our community, our youth. We run programs across the Lower Mainland and run 5 after school programs in Surrey, Langley, and Abbotsford schools. We are at schools for weekly programs to establish a positive relationship with the kids and help guide them towards accomplishing their goals. Aside from that, we do drug and gang presentations in schools across the Lower Mainland with our Education team. This team consists of those who have been victims of this epidemic and can share their experiences first hand with the kids. We are committed to promoting and developing interactive and collaborative ways to action shared core character values. We are proud of the relationships we have built with corporations that wish to invest in their communities and help their youth access opportunities that foster positive growth.

(Senior Political Journalist), India

Post Poll Analysis of

LOK SABHA 2019 Elections

THE SWEEP OF BJP AND ALLIANCE The largest Mega-festival of democracy is over and is making the ‘Think Tank’ of various political parties rethink their strategies to win the hearts of the voters all across the Indian subcontinent. The historic win for BJP and its alliances in their second subsequent term talks a lot of the changing demographic outlook of the Indian Voter. Prime Minister Narendra Modi once again has proven to be a strong motivation factor for the people of India where the votes primarily went for him than the electoral candidate. The entire election campaign seemed to be more of a presidential style of a campaign where the success and qualities of the leader of the party overpowered even the manifesto of the party. No doubt, this resulted in BJP bagging the whopping 303 seats and with this, Modi has once again proven himself to be a leader par excellence.

FIRSTLY, the trust on the leadership beyond caste-based politics is the new India that world is witnessing. SECONDLY, Modi’s handling of the cross-border terrorism also boosted the morale and trust of the people of India. THIRDLY, the support that NDA got from the North East and Eastern state of Bengal and Orrisa added on to the feathers of the cap adorned by the BJP. The integration of the representatives of the North Eastern states in his cabinet and giving them due importance benefitted the party in making a dent in the North East states. NDA’s alliances with AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) and BPF

There have been many factors for such an astounding victory of NDA. 26 TOC-Canada-Day-2019 .indd 26

The Times of Canada - JULY - 2019

(Bodoland People’s Front) gave it a regional flavour and a definite edge over its opponents who had no definite leadership to boast off. FOURTHLY, the party was able to sweep the entire west, north and east India in saffron colour except Punjab. This is a clear indication of the trust that people had in the leadership and its pre-poll alliances so much that NDA gave tough competition to Mamta Banerjee in her own ruling state. Not to be ignored is Odisha another state where BJP was able to win the hearts of its voters. UPA’s strategy and Mahagathbandhan (Mega-Alliance) of Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party in UP could not do much more due to the loss of the trust people had in their alliances. Not even a year back SP and BSP were at loggerheads and have a history of hating each other to the core. Even when the party leaders decide to come together, this does not go well with their dedicated voters who have thrived in this this caste based and hate politics. This boomeranged back on the party. Congress not being a part of this Gathbandhan resulted in vote cutting for each other especially SP. They were unable to provide an alternative narrative to the electorate and with a negative campaigning; they were not able to offer them a credible alternative. The opposition has to understand that the castebased arithmetic no longer works as the electorate is now demanding more than what is being promised at the surreal levels.

voters in UP who thought that he was himself not sure about winning from UP, then how he can build up confidence to his team. UPAs had to pay a heavy price for its failure to ensure that the anti-incumbency vote did not split amongst opposition. The only saving grace for them was Tamil Nadu where they could prove it otherwise. The congress campaign of on Rafale deal and “Chowkidar Chor hai” got a dent when Supreme Court interfered and said it never referred anything like that and Rahul had to come forth an apologize. It did not affect the voter, as they believed more in the honesty and integrity of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the contrary, BJP made a huge shift in its working style by giving enough importance to its alliances. Take the case of Bihar where it agreed to fight on fewer seats than what they had won in 2014 so that the alliance could be pulled off well. The same scenario was seen in Maharashtra where BJP has an understanding with its natural alliance SHIV SENA who in the past four years has been grueling BJP in more than one way. They have decided to come together once again not only for Lok Sabha but also for Vidhan Sabha elections that are to take place in October this year. BJP has been able to win hearts of its alliances by giving them due importance. BJP however, still had to win over the confidence of its

The pathetic performance of Congress in Uttar Pradesh which has always been their domain only indicates the lack of trust the voters had on the Congress leadership especially with Rahul Gandhi’s decision to go down South and run for another seat there. This went against him as the voters of Amethi lost confidence in him that he will stand by them. This decision of his sent wrong signals to his dedicated 27 TOC-Canada-Day-2019 .indd 27

Southern counterparts and should focus now more on the development of those areas as well. Up until December 2018, there was pre poll analysis that indicated a tough fight in between the opposition and the ruling government but BJP’s twist of its campaign from January 2019 made a huge shift in its favour. The campaigned revolved around projection of Modi as their prime ministerial candidate, its future policies, cross border tackling of issues especially counter-terrorism and international relations. Not to forget BJP giving full confidence to its alliances. All this and much more helped in building the confidence of the voter for the leadership. It has been a democratic election where one man was projected as the only alternative to growth and the best part is that the electorate of India believed in him.

Create a DIY

PLANTER BOX

and grow your summer herbs

Do-it-yourself projects are more popular than ever, and it’s no wonder why; they make for a great weekend activity and are a creative way to add handmade touches to your space. Whether it’s gardening, cooking, or simply being creative, summer is the perfect time to combine your favorite passions into a DIY project.

is not only fun to create, but also will be useful for months to come. “A great summer DIY project is creating an herb planter box,” Lambton says. “Not only can you choose your favorite herbs to grow, but you can reap the rewards by adding them to new culinary creations all summer long.”

Chris Lambton, garden and yard care expert, suggests a seasonal project to kick off the summer months that

All it takes is a few simple steps and tools to create your own custom DIY planter box. Assemble and prepare

your materials. First, gather the wood to make your planter - you’ll need five separate pieces: two for the sides, one for the base, and two for the front and back. Measure your pieces to the dimensions of your choosing and cut them to size. Once your base piece 32

The Times of Canada - JULY - 2019

is cut, you’ll want to add a few drainage holes to keep the herbs’ roots healthy. Use a manual Precision Hand Drill for more precise, controlled power. CONSTRUCT YOUR PLANTER Next, nail the pieces of the planter together. Use a Precision Hammer to nail the pieces together at right angles. These hammers are specifically designed for DIY projects in terms of weight and size, so it’s easy and comfortable to use. After your box is assembled, add some personality, such as a fresh coat of paint or stain, just be sure to sand it down before painting to ensure the color will stick. For a more rustic aesthetic, leave the wood bare. SELECT YOUR HERBS Now comes the fun part - selecting your herbs. Basil, cilantro, chives, oregano, rosemary or thyme are great options, as they easily grow in a planter and are a great addition to any summer dish. You can purchase herbs from a local garden store and transplant them into your planter box. Or, you can grow the herbs from seeds, which is more budgetfriendly and will allow you to choose from a wider selection of plant varieties. PLANT THE HERBS Once you have your herbs, it’s time to start planting. Have Multipurpose Garden Snips handy to quickly cut through soil bags and seedling containers. First, add a layer of dampened soil, then, drop in your seeds. Depending on the types of herbs you’re using, you’ll want to make sure they are spaced far enough apart to allow for plenty of sunlight and airflow. Next, lightly cover with soil. WATCH YOUR PLANTER GARDEN GROW Now that you’ve planted your herbs, it’s time to nourish them and watch them flourish! Most container herbs do well in a sunny location, so be sure to place your planter box in a well-lit area. They prefer not to be overwatered, so be sure to do so sparingly and slowly. Once they are thriving, harvest the fresh leaves regularly to promote growth so you can use them in your recipes all summer long.

LAMB MEAT BALLS INGREDIENTS • 1 kg ground lamb (35 oz.). • 1 large red onion, grated • 2 cloves of garlic, minced • 1 tsp dried oregano • 2 tbsp fresh mint, chopped • 1/2 tsp ground cumin • 1/2 tsp ground coriander • 1/2 a cup breadcrumbs • 1 egg • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp finely grated Greek kefalotyri cheese or good-quality pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano (optional) • salt and freshly ground pepper • flour for dredging • oil for frying DIRECTIONS 1. To prepare this traditional Greek lamb meatballs recipe (arnisioi keftedes), add all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix, squeezing with your

hands, to allow the flavours to blend. Cover the bowl with some plastic wrap and let it rest in the fridge for at least 15 minutes. 2. To form your Greek lamb meatballs, roll the mixture into balls, the size of a walnut. Dredge lightly each meatball in flour, until well covered. Transfer to a plate, shaking off any excess flour. 3. The traditional way of cooking Greek lamb meatballs is frying them in plenty of oil. 4. To fry Greek lamb meatballs use a large, deep skillet and pour in the oil to a depth of 1/2 an inch (1,5 cm). Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it begins to ripple. Add the lamb meatballs in batches in a single layer and fry for about 7 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and crisp on all sides. Using a slotted spoon, remove the meatballs to a plate lined with paper.

DIRECTIONS 1. To prepare this Greek lamb souvlaki recipe, cut the meat into equal sized (3 cm) chunks and set aside. 2. Prepare the marinade for the lamb souvlaki. In a large bowl add the olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, the herbs and spices and season with freshly ground pepper – don’t add salt yet. Whisk all the ingredients to combine. Add the meat and the chopped onions and blend to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, chill and let marinade for at least 4 hours. It’s best to leave the meat for the lamb souvlaki marinade overnight, to soak up all the wonderful flavours. (If you are at home blend the marinade once in a while). 3. In the meantime prepare the tzatziki sauce for the lamb souvlaki. Pour in a blender the olive oil and grated garlic and blend until combined. Remove the skin and the seeds of the cucumber and grate it into a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper and leave aside for 10 minutes. Wrap the grated cucumber in a towel and squeeze, in order to get rid of the excess water. In a bowl, add the cucumber, the blended garlic and oil, the yogurt, 1-2 tbsps of red wine vinegar, a pinch of salt and

blend, until the ingredients are combined. Store the tzatziki sauce in the fridge and always serve cold.

EEK, ITALIAN AND CANADIAN CUISINE4.

To assemble the lamb souvlaki (skewers), you can either use wooden or metal skewers. For this lamb souvlaki recipe, you will need about 10 skewers, depending on the size of each lamb souvlaki. If using wooden skewers, cut them to fit your griddle pan and soak them in water. (This will prevent them from burning.) Lift the chunks of lamb out of the marinade and thread the pieces, comfortably, on the skewers. At this point don’t forget to season your lamb souvlaki with salt.

5. Heat a grill, barbecue or griddle pan and cook the lamb souvlaki for about 10-15 minutes, until cooked to your liking.

6. While your lamb souvlaki is cooking, prepare the pita breads. Preheat the oven to 250C. Use a cooking brush to lightly oil the pita breads on both sides and season with salt and oregano. Place a large oven tray at the bottom of the oven and place the pita breads on top of the tray. Bake for 2-3 minutes. (Alternatively barbecue the pita breads, until nicely coloured on both sides). 7. Enjoy this delicious Greek lamb souvlaki recipe with pita bread and tzatziki sauce with a nice refreshing Greek feta salad.

Restore and replenish your skin and physical health as we suggest some amazing healthy diet tips to survive the sweltering summer this year. 1. GRAB SEASONAL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES These days most vegetables and fruits are available allyear round; however, consuming seasonal foods have their own charm and health benefits. Always picks freshly harvested foods to extract best benefits they have to offer. Load up on mangoes, plums, tomatoes, berries, watermelon, oranges, celery, et al. 2 DOWNSIZE YOUR MEAL It takes longer for the stomach to digest food plus the hot weather does not allow you to load up on too many foods. It is good to have lighter meals rather than having heavy ones, especially at night.

3. EAT MORE COOLING FOODS Load up on more body cooling foods and more hydrating foods that will help your keep going in this heat. Eat more watermelon, sesame, coconut water, cucumber, mint, fennel seeds, et al. 4. CHOOSE FRESH JUICES OVER COLD DRINKS Summers make you thirsty more often, which makes us resort to cold drinks and energy drinks that prove to be hazardous in the long run. Whenever you feel like quenching your thirst, prefer drinking orange juice or melon juice. 5. BINGE ON LIGHTER SNACKS Move over fried snacks that you enjoyed during winters; it is time to load up on lighter snack options like nuts, trail mixes, seeds, fruits, et al. These healthy diet tips will ensure a happy and healthy you! HAPPY SUMMERS!

WEAR

BLACK ALL SUMMER

I often let out a sigh looking at the pile of my seemingly identical looking black pants. And when anyone asks me for fashion advice, I render forthwith ‘wear something black’. Black is a perennially popular choice. And my clandestine powers tell me ‘it’ll always be’. Unwavering, fashion’s compulsive obsession with the colour is far more evident. Black’s hold on highfashion dates back to a time long ago.

Black is lazy and black is easy. While you may struggle to still feel affection for your boisterous neon strappy top, black will never ever make you question your affection. Personally, I’ve hardly ever seen anyone go wrong with this colour.

Demeulemeester have felt a pull toward its romanticism, others like Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing veer to its sleekness. Cristóbal Balenciaga maneuvered the colour for his architectural silhouettes, and Yves Saint Laurent for his androgynous “le smoking” women’s tuxedo. Black’s effect on the eyes is something preternatural, something that adds to its irresistible visual appeal. Any garb looks so much better in black! It’s the hot, sunny months of summer and you may to your absolute dislike hear a few distasteful snarls, ‘black’s not a summer colour’. Just know, the fashion climate does not care. Often regarded as august and level-headed, black has been the standard for men’s evening wear since the 1810s. Be it the trappings of formal attire, the morbid fashion of goth girls, black with good grace comes befriending to your friend’s cocktail party. Black is brilliant! While designers such as Ann

Allow us to give you a lesson on simple physics, as it turns out, the best colour to keep cool in the scorching heat is black. The colour absorbs everything coming in from the raging ball of fire, sure. But black also absorbs energy from the body instead of reflecting it back. So, quickly find something black to wear this summer! While new fads keep electrifying the industry as fashion grapples to find a new code, the fiery rise of the colour is never going to see a nuclear fall! By Srishti Paruthi

Home remedies for

SUNBURN RELIEF SUMMERS are here and no one can avoid the scorching sun, which brings with it a plethora of skin issues. We might love this season, but our skin certainly doesn’t love this season. Right from skin tanning to skin burns to rashes, there are several skin disorders caused due to the infrared and UV rays of the sun. Summer fun is not something you want to miss out on and no matter how much sunscreen you apply, tanning and rashes happen. Sunburns are caused when the skin is overexposed to the sun and results in an inflamed, irritated and broken skin. All is good as long as you keep yourself hydrated and eat well, but the summer sun is so hot in certain parts of the country that sunburns can’t be avoided. No matter if it’s mild or severe, you should always keep a couple of home remedies in mind so it doesn’t end up getting worse. Don’t let a mere sunburn put a damp to your mood, just try these home remedies to subdue the discomfort.

CHAMOMILE TEA Brew a pot of chamomile tea and then, chill it. Apply the chilled tea to the area that’s sunburnt and it’ll calm down your skin plus bring down the redness. The antiinflammatory properties found in this tea can help in bringing down the inflammation and help in a faster recovery. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Although using an acidic substance seems counterintuitive and can work wonders for your skin. Vinegar is a perfect solution for such skin issues. An infected sunburn is worse than a normal sunburn, and because the skin is quite sensitive when it’s irritated, infections can happen easily. Apply diluted apple cider vinegar on the affected area using a cotton pad or a washcloth and repeat every hour. CUCUMBERS As you already know, cucumbers are hydrating and refreshing, therefore, are great for cooling down the 56

irritated skin. But, other than that, cucumbers are also rich in antioxidants and have pain-relieving compounds. If you have a little sunburn, apply sliced or minced cucumbers to the affected area. MILK Cool milk is great as it creates a sheen of a protective layer on the sunburnt skin to prevent infections and also to avoid further damage. The coolness of the milk will bring down the inflammation and soothe the irritated skin. Dip a washcloth in milk and squeeze out the excess, apply it on the affected area for 5 minutes and then repeat the process multiple times. ALOE VERA Even the visuals of aloe vera are soothing, but to actually treat a sunburn, apply a generous amount of its gel to the affected area. It has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe and mollifies the inflamed skin. Aloe Vera also has two key enzymes that help in repairing the broken and burnt skin cells, and the 90% water content moisturizes the moisture-drained skin. Make sure to either use a pure form of the aloe vera or buy a product with the least number of ingredients (i.e. the aloe vera gel should be the closest to its purest form.) OATMEAL This seems like an out of the blue home remedy but it’s one of the most effective ones. To make sure that the sunburn doesn’t get worse, apply a thick paste of oats and milk to the affected area. Oatmeal has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and provides relief from within. The internal pain from the sunburn can be hard to manage, but this thick paste of oats and milk can hydrate the dry skin and soothe the internal pain plus reduce the stiffness of the skin and muscles surrounding the area. HONEY Honey is as good as any other to treat sunburns. It moisturizes the skin while treating it. The moisture in the honey is absorbed by the skin, bringing the swelling and redness down. It also provides all the nutrients required to repair the broken tissues. The antibacterial properties eliminate the risks of getting any infection. Apply a layer of honey on the affected area and wrap a bandage around the area. COCONUT OIL Coconut oil is known for its various benefits and treating sunburns is another one. Apply a layer of coconut oil to the sunburnt area to repair and rejuvenate the irritated skin. It also soothes the burning skin and heals it, plus stops the skin from peeling and itching and speeds up the process of healing.

EASY HEALTH CHANGES WITH BIG BENEFITS MAKING changes to improve your health can feel overwhelming. But just a few simple modifications can impact your health dramatically. Here are three easy changes you can make now to transform your health: EAT YOUR WATER Are you thirsty? Up to 75 percent of North-Americans may be functioning in a chronic state of dehydration. This lack of hydration also leads to many other health issues. Every cell in your body needs water to function, but often people don’t realize they’re dehydrated. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Thirst isn’t always a reliable early indicator of the body’s need for water.

Many people, particularly older adults, don’t feel thirsty until they’re already dehydrated.” MOST PEOPLE LEARN THAT WATER EXISTS IN THREE FORMS liquid, gas and solid. But there is a fourth form of water called “gel water” that’s the most hydrating. It’s found in plant cells and contains glucose and/or sodium, which helps your body absorb it in the small intestine. This is critical because the small intestine is where 95 percent of water is absorbed into your body. Gel water can be found in high concentrations in fruits and vegetables like cucumber, celery, watermelon and cantaloupe. One great way to stay well-hydrated is to drink smoothies. Blend fruits and vegetables in a smoothie and add coconut water to provide electrolytes. Drink this hydration-booster every morning, along with 3.5 liters of fluid water throughout the day. Here’s a final hydration boosting tip: Add a handful of 60

ground chia seeds to your smoothie or beverage. Ground chia seeds absorb 30 times their weight in water and turn fluid water into gel water. They also slow the passage of water through your digestive tract, giving the body more time to absorb it. STOP TAKING YOUR MULTIVITAMIN PILL Despite evidence that they are poorly absorbed, more than 200 million Americans take supplements daily. Most tablets and capsules contain relatively large, dense and difficultto-absorb particles that are often more than 10 times too big to be absorbed. Some scientists even believe these sand-like particles may be scratching the lining of the gut, causing inflammation.

to stress. There are some quick and easy ways you can reduce your stress level in a healthy way. It’s unlikely that anybody can remove stress completely, but if you have the discipline to incorporate just three simple techniques into your daily routine, you may be surprised at the calming benefits you can experience in just 5 to 10 minutes. First, just take five deep breaths with your eyes closed a few times per day or whenever you feel stressed. Second, meditate for another 5 minutes per day to clear your mind. Meditation may sound intimidating, but it’s easier than you may think to get started. There are even apps you can use on your phone for free guided meditations, like Sattva Meditations & Mantras or Insight Timer. Third, smile. Studies show the act of smiling affects brain chemistry to make you feel happier by immediately changing your hormone and stress levels. JUST THREE STEPS In just three easy steps, you can start making progress toward improving your health. Take a deep breath, drink a smoothie loaded with fruits and veggies, and take your microgel vitamin. Smile: You’ve got this.

There’s another option. Consider taking safer, more natural, more effective alternatives to pills that are better absorbed. A new category of supplements called microgels uses an advanced technology to replace tablets and capsules. Microgels allow for maximum absorption of ingredients into the body by releasing extremely small, ultra-bioavailable nutrient particles in the digestive tract. These microgels are a more natural way to supplement the diet - they are 100 percent free of synthetic binding glues, fillers and coatings listed as “other ingredients” in many supplements. USE MICRO-TECHNIQUES TO REDUCE STRESS Most of us are well-acquainted with stress. Studies show stress has negative effects on organs and tissues, including the brain, circulatory system and immune system. Many North-Americans report insomnia, anxiety, anger or fatigue due 61 TOC-Canada-Day-2019 .indd 61

Protect Hair

DURING SUMMER

DON’T let the sun, dull your shine! The sun showers its wrath on you, so pick-up your armors and get face the battle. You got to protect your hair from the cruel and merciless sun. Prevent your hair from splitting and becoming dry, damaged and dull this summer with these tips. AVOID TOO MANY COSMETICS The sun’s heat causes damage to your hair and makes it dry. So, it’s better to avoid any hair treatments or too much hair coloring during summer. APPLY CONDITIONER As the sun is already known to make the hair dry and fizzy during the summer season. So, make sure that you apply a good quality conditioner that suits your hair. If you go for swimming during summers do apply the leave-in conditioner on your hair and don’t forget to wear a cap. AVOID DRYERS You should keep your hair as natural as possible and avoid blow dryers and curlers. Do wash your hair earlier so that you get time to dry your hair in the air and not with a dryer.

As the sun’s strong heat is enough to damage your hair during summers so we suggest you not to use styling iron for your hair as they are high heating agents which can completely destroy your hair. TRIM YOUR HAIR This will help you to take care of your hair-ends as during summers the hair usually develops split ends a bit too frequently and the hair also becomes dry which does not look good. So, to give your hair a new life you must shorten them during summers. If not shorten then keep them tied in a bun or pony to control hair damage. BRING ON THOSE SCARVES AND HATS You need to cover that head of yours before prancing out in the Sun. Put on that hat or cover your hair with that scarf and protect it from the harmful radiations of the Sun. ALTERNATE-DAY THEORY When you wash your hair every day you rob it from all the natural oils that your hair every alternative day or three days a week.

WORKOUT OUTDOORS FOR A FRESH BOOST AS temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, you might start taking your workouts outside more often. To ensure your body’s comfort and safety, you may need to refresh your fitness regimen. These tips can help you safely enjoy your summer workouts: WEAR SWEAT-PROOF SUNSCREEN Protecting your skin is a yearround endeavor, but when it’s hot outside, you’re more likely to lose the protection of sunscreen faster. Use a sunscreen that is designed to withstand your summer workout, whether it’s a good sweaty run or laps in a refreshing pool. Reapply a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of 15 or higher regularly and be sure you’re using enough. Most people need a full ounce to cover their entire bodies.

STAY HYDRATED In warmer weather, your body typically sweats at a higher rate, causing you to lose key electrolytes, like salt and potassium, that are important to keeping your body properly hydrated. Stay hydrated by drinking fluids before, during and after a workout. To mix up your hydration plan, consider choosing a water formulated for fitness, like Propel Vitamin Boost, which is enhanced with 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamins B3, B5, B6, C and E and electrolytes to help.

coworker or pet, try exploring new places to work out for a change of scenery. Having a buddy by your side not only offers security, but also a boost of motivation. Together, you can work toward a common goal, keep each other accountable and

REPLACE WHAT IS LOST IN SWEAT. Find a workout buddy. There’s power – and safety – in numbers. Whether you grab a friend, 64

encourage each other to crank up the intensity. TIME WORKOUTS FOR COOLER PERIODS. Avoid exercising during the heat of the day. Instead, opt for morning or evening workouts and be conscious of high humidity levels, which can adversely affect your respiration and lead to overheating. It’s also a good idea to acclimate to the warmer temperatures by starting with a brief workout and gradually increasing the duration over the span of a week or two. WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHES. Switching to summer attire isn’t just about wearing less material; you also need to pay attention to the fabric you

wear. The appropriate fit may vary depending on your chosen activity, but generally, breathable fabric in lighter colors is ideal.

AYURVEDA is an ancient system of Health Care. Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatment are based on Trodosha’s: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. If these doshas are in balance state in the body: there is no problem in the body. Imbalance of these three doshas leads to any problem. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder which affects the large intestine or colon. Now a days IBS has become a common health issue. IBS IS CALLED GRAHANI IN AYURVEDA. According to Ayurveda texts Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, Irritable bowel syndrome (Grahani) is basically a combination of trouble with bowel habits: having different kind of stool (liquid, soft, hard or thin) or going more or less than normal (constipation or diarrhoea) and belly pain or discomfort. According to Ayurveda medicine there is a similar condition known as Muhur Badham, Muhur Dravam Malam, which means occasional constipation and hard stools along with occasional watery stool. Grahani roga is the term used to describe this health condition. Ayurveda recognizes the digestive tract as the very first site that indicates ill health. Ayurveda views elimination as an important indicator of overall health because healthy elimination generally points to balanced agni (digestive

Ayurveda defines health as the state of equilibrium of the tridoshas, the equilibrium of the agni (metabolic fire), and the dhatus (body tissues), mala kriya (elimination of waste), including cheerful state of atma (soul), Indriya (organs of perception) and manas (mind). CAUSES OF IBS (GRAHANI) Grahani being the site of Agni (digestive enzymes), is supported and nourished by the strength of the agni. Normally it restrains the downward movement of undigested food and releases the digested food (anna rasa) through the sides of the lumen into the circulation. In abnormal conditions, when the agni is weakened, the weak digestive enzymes bring about vidaha of food. That is, a part of the food is digested and a part remains undigested and is passed out as stool. So the distinctive feature of Grahani is Pakvam yadapakvam malam. That means, the person passes stool which is partly pakva (digested), and partly apakva (undigested). The first symptoms of Grahani are caused by an imbalance of digestive enzymes, of Agni. Agni (digestive enzymes) weakens, is a direct cause of the emergence 66

of Grahani. Prolonged causes include irregular eating habits, excessive intake of difficult to digest foods, overeating, eating at irregular intervals, too much effort, the cessation of the natural urge of urination, hunger, thirst, bowels, vomits, excessively sexually active, excessive consumption of spicy junk food. Intake of food in indigestion, Intake of food late night, Eating very fast, Regular intake of heavy to digest food, intake of refrigerated food, Regular intake of spicy, oily, fermented & preserved food, Excess intake of tea , coffee, Habit of sleeping immediately after dinner, Smoking, drinking, excess intake of non-veg food, Staying awake at night, disturbed sleep, Lack of proper hygiene. Also, excessive eating food that is very acidic, can be a cause of IBS. SYMPTOMS OF IBS Abdominal pain, loose stools - one must go to the toilet several times. Sometimes the stool improves or cramping relieved by emptying your bowels spontaneously, Sometimes the patient becomes clogged (constipation). The stool is also sometimes painful. Apart from these main symptoms Grahani is also accompanied by additional symptoms. These include excessive thirst, anorexia, salivation, water accumulation in the extremities (edema), joint pains, fever, regurgitation with an unpleasant odor, heart burn, excessive gas, urgent need to go to toilet and in some cases even vomiting. More serious conditions include: Rectal bleeding, Abdominal pain that progresses or occurs at night and Weight loss IMPROVE YOUR LIFE STYLE Eat light to digest food & freshly cooked food, Avoid long intervals between two meals, Eat fresh fruits & vegetables every day, Eat moong dal, bitter gourd, pumpkin,

pomegranate, gooseberry, pudina, turmeric, coriander, cumin seeds, hing (asafoetida), coconut, rock salt, cow ghee, cow milk, fresh buttermilk in daily food to prevent GI diseases. Always drink lukewarm water after meals. It aids proper digestion of food. Walk slowly for 15-20 min after every meal. It aids digestion of food. Exercise for 30 min daily. The Ayurvedic approach to managing IBS focuses on restoring the agni (the digestive fire) and this approach is definitely helpful. All illnesses are considered due to the imbalance of the doshas and are managed by balancing theories. Ayurveda recommends Rasayana therapy {Rejuvenating herbs) to treat IBS. Ayurveda has been in the choice of a wide range of supplements. All supplements are based on one principle: to improve digestion and Agni. A tailor-made treatment is recommended for every individual in Ayurveda. These herbs Improve blood circulation to GI tract, Rejuvenation of cells of GI tract. It causes proper secretion of digestive juices & helps to improve appetite & digestion and it increases immunity of GI tract thus preventing from diseases. DO IT

y a Tod

TOMORROW NEVER COMES

SAY YES, FEEL YES!

Say it now because tomorrow never comes!

THE mind will tell you continuously, “Postpone it. There is always tomorrow. Why be in such a hurry? You can do it tomorrow.” And the tomorrow never comes. The person who postpones any good act for tomorrow is postponing it forever; he will never be able to do it. If you postpone it today, you are learning a habit of postponing. Today you say, “Tomorrow.” You are creating a pattern of life, a style of life. Tomorrow will come as today again and the habit will say, “We will do it tomorrow.” I have heard an ancient parable: A man worshipped God for several years, and one day God appeared to him. He asked only for one thing. He said, “Give me something -- that’s why I have been worshipping you - - something which can fulfil all my wishes. Whatever I ask should be fulfilled, immediately.” God gave him a seashell, a beautiful seashell, and he said, ‘You ask anything from this seashell and immediately, instantly, it will be fulfilled.” The man tried - it was so. He was immensely happy. He asked for a big palace and it was there. He asked for beautiful women and they were there, and he asked for good food and it was there. From that day onwards he lived in absolute luxury.

But one day everything got disturbed. A sannyasin, a wandering monk, stayed with the man. The wandering monk said to him, “I have heard about your secret, but that is nothing. I have also worshipped God, far longer than you, and you are a householder, I am a monk -- of course he was more gracious to me. He has also given me a big seashell. Look at this seashell. This is double the size of your seashell. “It was. And the monk said, “Whatever you ask, the seashell gives you double. If you ask for one palace it makes two palaces for you. It always gives you double.” The man became greedy. Now one seashell was enough; he could have asked twice or thrice, there was no problem. But a greedy man is blind -- greed is blind. He became infatuated. He told the monk, “You are a monk, you have renounced the world, give your seashell to me and you can have my small seashell. For your purposes that is enough. I am a householder.” So, the seashells were exchanged. Early in the morning, after having a bath, the man worshipped and asked the seashell to give him one lakh rupees. The seashell said,

68 TOC-Canada-Day-2019 .indd 68

2019-06-06 10:25 AM

The Times of Canada - JULY - 2019

“Why one lakh? I can give you two lakhs!” The man was immensely happy. He said, “Good, give me two lakhs.” The seashell said, “Why two lakhs? I can give you four lakhs.” Now the man was a somewhat puzzled, disturbed. He said, “all right, give me four lakhs.” The seashell said, “I will give you eight lakhs.” And so on, so forth it went on -- but nothing was given! Promises and promises... and whatever he asked, the promise was doubled. He rushed to catch hold of the monk because in the morning he was to leave. He had already left.... This is a beautiful parable. That’s how the mind functions: the seashell of the monk -- tricky. It always goes on giving you great promises, but tomorrow, not today. And tomorrow never comes. And, slowly, hoping becomes your very life, just hoping and waiting and death comes... and no hope is ever fulfilled.

The mind is afraid of doing good. Why is the mind afraid of doing good? Because to do good is non-nourishing to the mind; the mind is nourished by doing evil, by doing bad. For example, if you say no, the mind is strengthened; if you say yes, the mind is not strengthened. Hence the mind is never interested in saying yes to anything. The mind is basically atheistic. It enjoys saying no; no is its power. Negativity is its food; it eats negativity. Positivity is

its death. Try to say no and you start feeling powerful. Whenever you say no, whenever you can manage to say no, you feel powerful. Whenever you have to say yes, you feel humiliated, as if something has been done against yourself. To say a total yes is to destroy the mind totally, and to remain in a total no is to remain in the mind, in the ego. The ego is another name of the mind. The ego is the centre of the mind; non ego is the centre of your being. At the very core of being there is no idea of “I”; but in the Observe -- it is not a question of believing or not believing -- observe and you will know. Say yes, feel yes, and suddenly there is no ego. The greatest good is saying yes to existence and life. That’s what religion is centre of the mind, I, I, I.... The only noise that goes on is that of the ego. The more you say no, the more you can feel your ego. “No” defines your ego. Watch -- and you will see the facticity of what I am saying. I am not propounding any theory; it is a simple statement of a fact of life. Osho Book Source: The Dhammapada OSHO Times international/courtesy Osho International Foundation. LOCATION Take your time to ask questions, learn about the market and various neighbourhoods, and think through what is important to you before making a decision, such as being near schools, transit, grocery stores and other amenities. Feeling connected to your community be it through social programs, volunteering or local attractions can also have a huge impact on your experience. Do some digging to find out more about what’s available based on your interests. It may help seal the deal. THE CARRYING COSTS The cost of operating a home is often overlooked by buyers – or it could be vastly different than you may have anticipated. Understanding how much it costs to heat and cool it, cover the taxes and otherwise maintain the property are major considerations when pulling together your holistic home budget. If you’re purchasing an existing home, your realtor may be able to help you obtain copies of the current owners’ bills — electricity, water, gas, taxes — to get a sense for what the operating expenses are, then factor them into your budget. Smart ideas

REFRESH YOUR DECK As seasons turn, your focus begins to shift to the outdoors. Your deck or patio becomes your new living room - an ideal setting for memorable moments with friends and family. If you look at these spaces and long for a refresh, the time to start planning is now. You have options, and many you can do yourself with minimal effort. To start, if you don’t have a deck or patio, research materials carefully before making an investment. One prevalent building trend involves making the smart choice toward natural, environmentally friendly materials that will never end up in landfills. WATER FEATURES As homeowners look to make their decks and patios a true retreat from the stress of everyday life, they want to add elements of Zen, which is why fountains and water features are becoming so popular. New decks are often built to incorporate these features, including pathways where water provides a calm ambiance. If a pond is too significant an undertaking, fountains provide a more affordable alternative that can be used in any size space. PERGOLAS These beautiful semi-shelters can be built in a number of useful configurations depending on how much shade you require, what you wish to situate beneath it (A dining set? Outdoor couches and chairs? Grilling equipment?) and whether you want to incorporate climbing plants. LIGHTING When the sun goes down that doesn’t mean the fun should stop. Add lighting to extend the functionality and enjoy special moments under the stars on your deck or patio. Stair, railing and pathway lighting add a necessary safety feature, while under-table lighting and deck-post sconces provide the perfect illumination for the space without being overwhelming. For a touch of twinkle, add a few outdoor string lights in white, or for a more festive atmosphere, go for the color of your choice. These outdoor living ideas are sure to enhance any size deck or patio space. Make plans today so you can enjoy many seasons of fun outdoors with loved ones.

BUILDING A NEW HOME?

Protect it against today’s faster, scarier fires

If your new home is among the hundreds of thousands being built this year, congratulations! You’ll have the chance to customize it to your dream home preferences. One feature that should be at the top of your priority list is the best possible fire protection for yourself and your loved ones: home fire sprinklers. While choosing household systems may not be as fun as picking paint colors and carpeting, it’s even more important. And asking for fire sprinklers could literally save your life.

THAT’S because home fires today are hotter and faster than fires of the past. Homes with unprotected lightweight building material and flooring burn faster, failing quicker (often collapsing in a fire). Common synthetic furnishings and belongings burn hot and fast and produce toxic smoke. Larger, more open layouts enable faster flashover. That means they can become deadly to people and pets in as little as two minutes. 8 out of 10 structure fire deaths happen at home. Young children,

older adults and people with disabilities are at the greatest risk. Home fire sprinklers are dependable. They not only save lives; they protect property and possessions (reducing fire damage by as much as 81 percent). Most insurers offer sprinkler discounts that lower your homeowners’ premiums. “New homeowners have a great opportunity to ensure their houses are optimized for fire protection,” notes Lorraine Carli, Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) president and vice 76

president of outreach and advocacy for the National Fire Protection Association. “Start with working smoke alarms on every level, and prepare and practice a home escape plan. Create a complete system of fire safety by asking for home fire sprinklers. HERE ARE THE BASICS: •

Your sprinklers will be customized for your home, ensuring proper protection for your unique layout. Usually the sprinklers are connected to the household water main. In areas where there is not a city water supply or well water, a tank and pump are typically used for water supply. Piping is hidden behind the walls and ceilings.

There are several kinds of sprinklers made just for homes. Some can be hidden behind round plates. Some sprinkler companies offer custom painted sprinklers to match your décor.

Each sprinkler is individually activated by heat, so the entire system does not activate. Each sprinkler has a temperature-sensitive glass bulb. If a fire starts, the high heat from it breaks the glass, allowing the water

to flow onto the fire. That controls or even puts out the fire, allowing you and your family to escape. •

You need not worry about your sprinklers being set off by smoke alarms operating, burnt toast or cigarette smoke. They’re designed to operate from the high heat of a fire, usually between 57-74 degree Celsius.

Your family’s fire safety is in your hands! Ask your builder for home fire sprinklers. The best time to install fire sprinklers is when the home is being built, while walls and ceilings are open and accessible. Learn the facts about home fire sprinklers from the nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition, a non-commercial educational organization that offers free information and resources.

SMART HOME These days, home upgrades are increasingly focused on one key feature: connectivity. In 2019, buyers want smart homes they can easily control from anywhere. From smart HVAC and sprinkler systems to connected garage door openers, it’s all about creating convenience and comfort. Here are four examples of smart home improvements that add value: 1) FULLY CONNECTED SECURITY SYSTEMS Security systems are nothing new, but the technology used to arm those systems is changing rapidly. Home security companies now offer fully connected systems that allow users to protect and monitor their homes from any smart device. Whether it’s a live video feed, the ability to lock and unlock doors remotely or just checking that all sensors are working properly, integrated security systems offer peace of mind. Having the infrastructure in place can

Improvements that pay off

be a selling point for buyers who want to make sure their new home is as safe as possible, given they’ll only have to set up the monitoring subscription upon move-in. 2) SMART GARAGES FOR CONVENIENCE AND SAFETY According to Remodeling Magazine’s 2019 Cost vs. Value survey, a garage door replacement is the number one home improvement project in terms of return on investment. But homeowners are taking it a step further and installing new technology to make the garage more user friendly. The new smart garage door openers come with technology built in to improve convenience and functionality. Not only are these openers quiet - ideal for attached garages - but the connectivity features allow you to check whether your garage door is open or closed, grant individual access with virtual keys, instantly know when someone is operating your garage door (authorized

or not), and provide a log of when each opener was used - all from your phone or smart device. You can open the garage door remotely for delivery people, a housekeeper or for your child coming home from school. Considering your garage is one of the most accessed points in your home, this is a useful security feature and proves that garages offer more than just storage space. With the right connectivity tools and features, they can provide convenience that will be attractive to future owners. 3) SMART THERMOSTATS SAVE ENERGY, INCREASE COMFORT As home improvement trends go, increased connectivity is rivaled only by the desire for more energy-efficient homes. Smart thermostats accomplish both these aims

and can increase the value of your home in the process. Smart thermostats let you easily control the temperature in your home from any connected device. You can set a daily schedule for your heater, adjust the temperature in individual rooms or let the system program itself based on your usage history. For energy-conscious buyers, this kind of technology provides a way of living that’s as aspirational as it is attainable. 4) PROGRAMMABLE LIGHTING IS A MUST-HAVE Smart lighting has turned from a novelty to a practical tool as products have gotten more advanced. Programmable lighting allows you to schedule when your lights will come on, turn lights on and off remotely, or change the lighting to improve aesthetics. With a smart lighting system, you’ll never have to get out of bed to turn the lights off downstairs, and you can always come home to a fully lit house, boosting your sense of security. With these kinds of applications, your home’s lighting can go from a ‘given’ to a must-have, attracting buyers like a moth to a flame. New, smart products are hitting the market every day. For homeowners savvy enough to incorporate this technology into their homes, they’ll not only be more connected, but they’ll likely see more offers rolling in when it comes time to sell.
