Canada day special

With the Pacific Ocean at its feet, the Coast Mountains as a backdrop and raw wilderness just minutes away, Vancouver is, quite simply, one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world.

Tucked into Canada's southwest corner, less than an hour from the US border, Greater Vancouver, also known as the Lower Mainland, is the largest metropolitan centre in Western Canada and the third largest in Canada. Vancouverites hail from all over the world; many are foreign-born. Here, numerous schoolchildren have a first

language other than English, and many adults can trace their roots to Asia, while others have flocked here from Eastern Canada, the US and Europe. The resulting culture is uniquely Pacific Rim: at once laidback and energetic; stylish and outdoorsy; cosmopolitan and welcoming. Think Los Angeles meets Hong Kong, with a dose of Seattle.

9

The Times of Canada - July 2018

with a dose of Seattle. Outdoor adventure is huge here, but so are dining and the arts. Although you can sail or golf in the morning and ski in the afternoon (and people do), you can also follow a day of kayaking, mountain biking or whale watching with a meal at one of North America’s hottest restaurants and an evening at the theatre. To top it off, Vancouver enjoys Canada’s gentlest climate. From low 20’s Celsius (high 70’s Fahrenheit) in summer to a mild 0 to 5 C (mid-40’s Fahrenheit) in winter. Winters are wet, but it rarely snows, except, of course, on the ski hills.

Vancouver was voted the “Best City in the Americas” for three years in a row by Condé Nast Traveler magazine and is consistently ranked among the world’s best places to live by global economic surveys. What’s Where? Vancouver’s city centre sits on the downtown peninsula, bordered by Burrard Inlet, the city’s port, to the north, and False Creek (actually an inlet) to the south. The peninsula is home to the central business district, the historic neighbourhoods of Chinatown, Gastown and Yaletown; the West End high-rise residential neighbourhood and Stanley Park, a thousand acre swathe of forest filling a full half of the peninsula. South of False Creek you’ll find Granville Island, an urban park, rich with studios, galleries, theatres and a bustling urban market; the funky beachside neighbourhood of Kitsilano and the University of British Columbia, home to the renowned Museum of Anthropology. North of Burrard Inlet is the North Shore, where suburban housing meets mountainous wilderness.

Mere minutes from the city, it’s the place for hiking, skiing, mountain biking and stunning city views. Go where the locals go, and check out Vancouver’s Main Street and Commercial Drive neighbourhoods. Street runs right through Mount Pleasant and is often regarded as the city’s dedicated hipster enclave (think indie coffee shops, unique clothing stores and cool bars). Further east, Commercial Drive can claim to be Vancouver’s first hipster hood. Colonized by Italian immigrant families in the 1950s, it later became the city’s bohemian heart. Now, “the Drive” is one of the city’s most popular hangout streets: locals hit the restaurant and bar patios here on languid summer evenings or drop by the still-vibrant Italian coffee shops to catch a European soccer game.

Artist Profile

Bachan Bedil is a punjabi lyricist,

who gave numerous super hit songs in the 90’s. His songs made many new singers the superstars of the Punjabi music industry.

11

The Times of Canada - July 2018

Diljit Dosanjh’s “Lakk 28 Kudi Da” was a chartbuster and DJs still play it during the parties. Bachan Bedil faced a lot of criticism for “Lakk 28” due to its teasing lyrics. Talking about it he said, “I apologized for the song on many platforms but if you just read the lyrics, it is simply a praise for the girl. The way they filmed the video and added sounds & rap in the track, it sounded teasing.” The song made Diljit and Honey Singh the superstars of the industry. Many writers in the Punjabi music industry have started singing too. Some of them have got more success in singing than writing. Talking about this he said, “This is nothing new. Didar Sandhu & Amar Singh Chamkila were also lyricists before becoming established singers. In the modern times writers like Debi Makhsoospuri and Happy Raikoti have done the same. I never tried singing because I felt that I don’t have that capability and I could not sing.” Badrukhan, a village 4 km from Sangrur in Punjab, is believed to be the birthplace of Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Padma Vibhushan, Lt. Gen Harbhaksh Singh was also from this village. “I feel blessed to be born in the same village”, says Bachan Bedil during an interview with The Times of Canada. Bachan Bedil, studied till 10th grade in Badrukhan and then joined Akal Degree College in Matuana Sahib, Sangrur. He started writing poems when he was in grade 8th. He used to recite his poems in the music classes in his school. His teachers were very impressed by his talent. While in college, he contributed to the college magazine. His inspirations were S. Babu Singh Maan, Dev Thrikeyan Wala, Sajan Raikoti and Charan Singh Safri. “My friends always boosted my morale and inspired me to get my songs recorded”, Bachan Bedil told us remembering his struggle period. He started going to Ludhiana, the city where all big names of Punjabi music industry had their offices. He met many singers but no one was interested in recording the song of a newcomer. Finally, Surinder Shinda sang his first song. His first hit song was “Rangli Charkhi”, sung by Late Kuldeep Manak. “Rangli Charkhi established me as a lyricist in the industry”, said Bachan Bedil. After that, he was unstoppable. He wrote songs on all topics like love, breakup, husband wife relation, female feticide and religious. He gave chartbuster songs one after another. His team with Ranjit Mani was a huge success. Their songs “Tere Viah Da Card” & “Channa Passport Bana Liya” broke all the records. The songs were played by every music shop and by every bus driver. These two were the parameters of the success of a song in the 90’s. Bachan Bedil has worked with many singers like Kuldeep Manak, Surinder Shinda, Lovely Nirman, Devinder Kohinoor, Dilshad Akhtar, Ranjit Mani, Surjit Bindrakhia , Kuldeep Paras, Perminder Sandhu and Satwinder Bitti. The singers from the new generation too sang his songs. Harjit Harman, Feroz Khan, Gippy Grewal and Diljit Dosanjh are some of them.

Apart from songs, he has also written a poetry book of more than 100 pages, “Pind Aawazan Marda”. It was a long poem about the old Punjabi village which we don’t get to see these days. “I presented the book to Gurdas Mann ji. He praised me a lot after reading the book”, said Bachan Bedil while presenting the copy of the book to Vinay Sharma, MD The Times of Canada. A portion of the book is still being taught in CBSE syllabus all over India. Apart from the poetry book, he published a book of his songs. It had around 100 songs written by him. He has also written a novel named “Sandli Khedan”. The novel was recently released at Punjab Bhawan in Surrey, Canada. His upcoming ghazals book is 70% complete and he is also working on a story for a movie. The Times of Canada wishes Bachan Bedil every success in his future endeavors.

"Football, soccer, as it is known in America, is a worldwide phenomenon. The FIFA World Cup is underway and the whole world including India is watching it in stadiums or on their TV screens"

Indian football team, which is currently at 97th rank, did once qualify for the World Cup in 1950. The newly independent India played a historic match against France in 1948 London Olympics. They lost the game but won applauds of the whole world. Indian players played barefoot. FIFA changed its rules, that players could no longer play barefoot, so the Indian team stayed home. Their dreams squashed forever. Barefoot Warriors, a Hollywood movie being produced by Jatinder Jay Minhas, under the banner of Minhas Films Ltd., is the true story of Manna Singh, the star player of that formidable Indian team, Manna Singh’s son & Christian, once a budding soccer star on the US national team, his career sidelined by a mistake of his own doing. The movie shows how Christian and Manna Singh cross paths and their lives change forever, as does India’s destiny as a football nation. Barefoot Warriors is a story with an Indian Soul and an American heart. Film stars Sean Faris, Rajpal Yadav, Darren Tassell, Rajan Toor and Aman Grewal. Barefoot Warriors is written and being Directed by “Kavi Raz” an Actor, Writer, Director

based in Hollywood. His recent written and directed success, The Black Prince was released globally during the summer of 2017. British Columbia is the

home of numerous historic sites. Each of the province’s historic sites has an intriguing story to tell. Here are a few to visit this summer...

Emily Carr House

The Grist Mill and Gardens

She worked late into the night, painting, writing, plotting her next adventure — often surrounded by her beloved dogs and her monkey, Woo. Emily Carr was larger than life, a fact that is celebrated at her former Government Street home where her story lives on more than 70 years after the celebrated artist’s death. Both a National and Provincial Historic Site, Emily Carr House is not simply a showcase of Carr’s art and writings — it’s a hub for musical performances, spoken word readings and contemporary art shows, as well as a shrine where the faithful can see how she lived, full of reproductions of iconic sketches and paintings depicting Carr’s deep connection to BC forests and First Nations villages. emilycarr.com

When it opened in 1877, the Grist Mill was, according to local newspaper archives, “running day and night, but could not keep up with the demand.” The waterImage: www.oldgristmill.ca wheel-powered flour mill in Keremeos nourished local settlers, First Nations and miners who made their home along the historic Dewdney Trail in the Similkameen Valley. As the Gold Rush boom waned, the building morphed from flour mill to hay barn, from artists’ studio to chicken coop. Today, visitors to the Okanagan site

21

will find the mill restored to its former glory: docents in period costumes showcase the operation’s trials and triumphs while music concerts and more draw enthusiasts to the garden. It’s an experience best capped in the Tea Room with buttery scones, cookies and cakes made of flour ground from the mill’s original equipment. www.oldgristmill.ca

The Historic O’Keefe Ranch It was the site of the first post office in BC’s Okanagan Valley, a stage coach depot complete with general store, grist mill, church and cemetery. Home sweet home for the cattle ranching O’Keefe family since 1867, the spread, near Vernon, flourished during the Gold Rush; it was here that people gathered for events and to consume the news of the day. In the mid1960s the family unveiled the ranch as a historic site; now owned and managed by the City of Vernon, guests are welcome to saddle up for guided historImage: www.okeeferanch.ca ic horseback tours or take a wander through the property’s original buildings, including the O’Keefe mansion, blacksmith shop, Balmoral School, St. Anne’s Church and, of course, the post office. www. okeeferanch.ca

The Times of Canada - July 2018

Fort St. James National Historic Site A Hudson’s Bay flag flies high over Fort St. James in BC’s north, where visitors can experience life as it was more than a century ago — a hardscrabble existence shaped by rural landscapes and fur trade with local First Nations. Here, costumed interpreters offer insight, livestock roam the scene and tiny tykes can partake in the Explorer and Little Trappers programs.

Image: By jerrye and Roy Klotz

Visitors can overnight in the Men’s House B&B or in the Murray House, June through September, where original artifacts from the fur trade are on display. But not before dinner: the Commemoration Café dishes up generous portions of salmon, and beef stew with bannock; equally hearty breakfasts boast eggs, pancakes, sausages and bottomless cups of joe.

Journal

Being born and raised in Terrace BC, I had the great opportunity and privilege to participate in public service with small town values. At a young age, my family was very active in the Sikh community, participating in the local food drives and school charity events. My earliest memories involve our house being one of the first places new immigrants from India would be welcomed and my family would assist as they transitioned their move to Canada. Inclusion, tolerance and supporting others was a value that was demonstrated by my parents and this was expected of us 3 children as we grew up. As a teenager, I joined the local Air Cadet Squadron and volunteered with my junior hockey team. In high school, I was an active participant of the Student Council and I was elected as the president of our Grad Class in 1988. I joined the ranks of the RCMP in 1992, my first posting was in Surrey where I started my family and undertook the challenges of being one of the few South Asian police officers here at that time. I transferred to specialized units in Vancouver and Terrace but I always came back to Surrey as my home. While working as a police officer here, I saw the opportunity to further represent our community by becoming a member of the City of Surrey Multicultural Committee and the RCMP representative on the Design Guideline Review Committee for new developments in Surrey. In 2014, I undertook a role as a Board of Director with PICS – Progressive Intercultural Community Service Society. These experiences and always looking for ways to better our community is a value that I have displayed in my professional career and personal life. In 2017, I retired from the Surrey RCMP as a Staff Sergeant and undertook the development and operation of a small business in Surrey that employees 5 people. With over 25 years of local policing knowledge, people still turn to me for answers to some of the challenges we face in Surrey on issues of crime, policing, affordability, transportation and environmental stewardship. These are all issues that will be coming up in the months and years ahead. My message for anyone who has these concerns

is to get involved with your community for the right reasons. Advocate for the government you want that will help to create the community you desire. Public service should not be self-serving. We need ethical leadership and transparency of our elected officials to foster and maintain public trust. I encourage the people of Surrey to identify the causes that resonate with us all and collectively work together towards effecting positive change. -Jack Jagdev Singh Hundial

Tea: A Spiritual Experience All the

Buddhist masters have been drinking tea, it has been their discovery. It was Bodhidharma who discovered tea. The name `tea' comes from the mountain Tha in China, where Bodhidharma was meditating. And the name has remained the same in different languages ... just slight changes. In Hindi it is chai, in Marathi it is cha, in Chinese it is tha, in English it has become tea. But a thousand masters have never denied tea as something unspiritual.

It becomes a meditation. Watchfulness is meditation, what you watch does not matter. Then the master with great grace brings the tea to everybody; pours the tea with immense awareness, consciousness, carefulness, respectfulness, and everybody receives the tea as if something divine is being received. In that silence sipping the tea ... and this very ordinary thing has become a spiritual experience. Nobody can speak in the teahouse, silence is the rule. When you put down your cups and saucers you also bow down with gratitude to existence. The tea was only a symbol. Osho, Dogen: The Zen Master: A Search A Fulfilment 4

They have transformed the simple act of drinking tea into a beautiful meditation.

On the contrary, Zen has in its monasteries a special teahouse, and when they go for tea it is called a tea ceremony. They have transformed the simple act of drinking tea into a beautiful meditation. You have to leave your shoes outside as if you are entering into a temple. And there is a master who is going to lead the ceremony. Then everybody sits down in the silence of the monastery, the tea is prepared on the samovar and everybody listens to the music of the samovar boiling the tea.

Tea Awareness A cup of tea in Zen is not the same as it is anywhere else in the world. A cup of tea is the greatest reception a Zen master can give to you. The cup of tea represents awareness. After drinking tea you cannot go to sleep; hence tea became one of the most important symbols of awareness, of meditation. Have a cup of tea; does not simply mean, Have a cup of tea.

31

Certainly the tea is offered, but with the understanding that the cup is full of awareness. A cup of tea has been used in many ways by the Zen masters.Osho, Joshu: The Lion's Roar, 6

From Mundane to Meditative To make tea a meditative ceremony is just symbolic. It shows that any mundane activity can become meditative. Digging a hole in the garden, planting new roses in the garden... you can do it with such tremendous love and compassion, you can do it with the hands of the buddha. There is no contradiction. The tea ceremony is only the beginning. I say unto you: Your every act should be a ceremony. If you can bring your consciousness, your awareness, your intelligence to the act, if you can be spontaneous, then there is no need for any other religion, life itself will be the religion.

S

moothies offer a convenient way to boost both the quantity and quality of fruit and vegetable intake by reducing food particle size to help maximize nutrient absorption. It’s important, however, to use whole fruits and veggies rather than just their juice. Why? Because, when we juice, we lose the fiber and all the phytonutrients bound to it. How else can we maximize health benefits of smoothies? Let’s look at greens, one of the healthiest foods on the planet. I’ve always said that the best way to get your greens is in whichever way you’ll eat the most of them. I remember the first time I sipped a green smoothie. I was speaking somewhere in Michigan, hosted by a darling physician couple. They told me they drank “blended salads” for breakfast. Intellectually, I loved the idea. Greens in convenient liquid form? I envisioned myself drinking a salad on my way to work every day. But then I tasted it. It felt like I was drinking someone’s lawn. If you’re like me, you may need to build up to green smoothies. Pretty much everyone loves fruit smoothies. A frozen banana, berries, some apple—delicious. But, if you add a handful of baby spinach, you may hardly even taste the greens. Over time, as you add more and more greens, your taste buds can adapt. Another superfood I incorporate into my smoothies? Flaxseeds. Not only are they so remarkable they are their own category in my Daily Dozen, they have a wonderful binding quality that makes them a great addition, so toss a tablespoon into the blender for thick, milkshake-like smoothies. (They’ve also been found to significantly suppress appetite and calorie intake!) One more way to help boost the antioxidant content of your smoothie is adding a teaspoon or so of amla, dried Indian gooseberries. Two things to keep in mind when it comes to smoothies are speed of consumption and your tooth enamel. It’s been shown that you can drink fruits and vegetables in smoothie form at about two cups per minute, which is ten times faster than what it may take to eat them in solid form. Since liquid calories can be consumed so quickly, they have the ability to undermine our body’s capacity to regulate food intake, so sip smoothies slowly rather than gulping them down so our brain and body can be in sync as to how full we are. And our enamel? If you add lemon or other acidic fruits or vegetables to your smoothie, the enamel on your teeth may soften temporarily. So, if you’re about to enjoy a sour smoothie, drinking through a straw, avoiding swishing the smoothie in your mouth, and rinsing your mouth with water after drinking a sour smoothie may assist in reducing tooth enamel erosion. from: www.nutritionfacts.org

Ingredients 1 large zucchini 1/2 tablespoon salt 8 ounces bottled soda water (club soda) 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/2-inch olive oil

How to Make it Prepare the Zucchini Wash the zucchini thoroughly in cold water and pat it dry. Trim the ends. Slice the zucchini lengthwise into strips about 1/8- to 1/16-inch thick. Cut the zucchini in round shape slices if they’re long.

The Times of Canada - July 2018

41

Slices measuring about 3 inches work best. Place the slices in a bowl with the salt. Let them sit for at least 20 minutes, and up to 1 hour. Pour off the accumulated liquid. (The salt will draw the water out from the squash.)

Make the Batter Pour the soda water into a bowl. Slowly stir in the flour and salt, using a whisk or a fork to mix.

Fry the Zucchini Bring the oil to high heat. Coat the zucchini with the batter. Use a fork to place the pieces in the oil. Fry for about 5 minutes until golden and crispy on both sides, flipping them over about halfway through. The batter will puff up and the zucchini center should be soft when they’re done. Drain the zucchini on absorbent paper toweling just long enough to remove the excess oil. Serve hot.

Palmer offers these seven tips to achieve or maintain a healthy weight: Prioritize breakfast. Eating breakfast kickstarts your metabolism and gives you energy and focus to begin your day. Adding pistachios to common breakfast foods, like cereal, toast or oatmeal, can balance your blood sugar levels and prevent energy slumps. Whole, chopped or crushed pistachios can add a satisfying crunch and a flavorful punch of plant-based protein. Add movement. Just 20-30 minutes of daily physical activity, like a brisk walk, can help you maintain or lose weight. Instead of watching TV before or after dinner, encourage your family to join you for a stroll around the neighborhood. On the weekends, longer walks or hikes are the perfect time to reconnect with loved ones. Luckily, pistachios are lightweight and portable - the perfect snack for refueling after exercise. Keep a bag handy in your car, backpack or purse for a quick pick-me-up. Start with SMART goals. Sustainable weight loss begins with baby steps. When your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound, you are more likely to achieve them. Try this goal on for size: Replace your usual afternoon snack with one serving of shelled pistachios three times per week for one week. Achieving SMART goals boosts your confidence and these small pistachio wins are packed with protein, B vitamins, healthy fats, potassium and even antioxidants.

Don't skip meals or snacks. Skipping meals can lead to uncontrollable hunger and binge eating. Three to five hours after eating, your blood sugar begins to fall and can leave you feeling fatigued and unfocused. Eating three small to moderate meals, and two to four snacks per day, can keep hunger at bay and keep your energy levels steady. Crack open a handful of pistachios for a quick snack - no preparation required - and you'll be ready to tackle whatever the day throws at you. Pre-portion pistachios. Did you know there are 49 pistachios in one serving? That's more than any other nut, plus 10 percent of the Daily Value of fiber. Pre-portion pistachios into small bags on Sunday evening and you'll be set for a week of smart snacking. At just 160 calories per serving, pistachios are a nutritious, lowcalorie, portable snack that can help you reach your goals. Get creative with pistachio flour. Pistachio flour is a fun, glutenfree flour alternative that can spice up traditional recipes. Adding ground pistachios to standard crust recipes can boost the fiber and protein content of your favorite dishes. Try adding pistachio flour to Greek yogurt, along with freshly chopped garlic and lemon zest for a tangy, protein-rich, savory dip. Swap your nighttime snack. When hunger strikes late at night, it's easy to reach for indulgent foods. Swap your typical nighttime snack of cookies, candies, pizza or ice cream for a more balanced choice: pistachios. Forget willpower and keep a pre-portioned bag of pistachios handy for when you need it the most. Whether you have a little or a lot of extra weight to shed, adding pistachios to the mix has helped many people lose weight and improve overall health, adds Palmer.

“When You Fall In Love, Water Tastes Like Sherbet” – Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhat are painting the B-Town red these days. They are the latest couple of the film industry. These two are all over the social media feeds. Ranbir Kapoor has already admitted to it. While talking to GQ he said, “It’s really new right now, and I don’t want to overspeak. As an actor, as a person, Alia is – what’s the right word? – flowing right now. It’s new for us, so let it cook a bit.” Talking to Anupama Chopra, film critic, he said “Falling in love is the greatest thing in the world. When you fall in love, everything is great. Water tastes like sherbet.”

“RAJE DA BAJA”

“Tension mein Jeena chahe hamari majboori hai But friends, hasna-hasana bhi bahut Zaroori hai” This is an absolute truth that laughing is extremely important in our life. We have several shows on our radios and TVs but almost all of them are serious ones. Why are Canadians trained in our professional institutes to pass a fake smile at others? I figured out that we don’t have desired comedy programs on any Canadian radio or TV to bring real smiles on people’s faces, or if those are there they aren’t enough. But now, the good news is that Deepak Raja, a great Bollywood comedian, once a member of Jaspal Bhatti team and later in Kapil Sharma’s team, is running a very funny show on six TV channels of ‘Telus & Optic TV, Bell Fibe, all IP boxes, Roku, Smart TV & V Media. The show name is, “Raje-da-baja”. Its promos are also going to run on ‘Sanjha TV, Chardikala Time TV, Only Music, PBN music & Desi Channel. When asked what’s going to be special in this show, Deepak told that

he is going to come in this show in various famous characters such as Swami Rama Dev, Mehar Mittal, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Anna Hazare, various Indian politicians, Bollywood stars and, of course, his own created funny characters. Moreover, there will be a new topic every time related with Canada and India life in every new episode of this show. The show will be like a beautiful bouquet decorated with new songs, Deepak Raja’s couplets and ingenious comedy. The most important thing to mention here is that many couplets spoken by Navjot Singh Sidhu, in Kapil Sharma’s comedy show, are written by Deepak Raja: indeed, a proud achievement for him. Besides being a wonderful artist, he is a great poet too, and he is also writing a couple of movie stories now. In the 1st super hit comedy show ‘The Great Indian Laughter challenge’ aired on ‘Star One’ in 2005, there were 50 participants, and Deepak was on of the top 7. His performance was greatly applauded by Navjot Singh Sidhu and Shekhar Suman, the show-judges, & appreciated worldwide. This success opened great opportunities for him and since then he has worked in several movies, plays and over 3,000 live stage performances across India and all over the world. He is very

thankful to Vinay Sharma, MD of The Times of Canada, and Teji Sandhu, the famous Punjabi Singer for inspiring him to visiting Canada. Deepak says, “Canadians value all types of art & he is overwhelmed by the love and warm welcome rendered to him in Canada.” Nostalgic about his journey so far, he says, “I was a student of Doaba College, Jallandhar. There I represented Guru Nanak Dev University in Youth festivals and won three Gold Medals for best comedian and theater artist. I am highly indebted to Gurpreet Ghuggi, Chacha Raunki Ram, Professor Gulshan and Jaspal Bhatti saheb who helped him hone his talent and become what he is today. And he is going to bring the best of his best in this show. Bill Sandhu and Teerath Singh of FYI TV are launching this show which will be telecast worldwide. Hopes are very high from Deepak Raja’s this comedy show and people are eagerly waiting for it to be telecast. I wish all the team members of this show best of luck. Prof. Avtar S. Virdi Surrey, BC

iring a car accident attorney can be a stressful process. You’re trying to find an attorney you trust to help you get the compensation you need – and you are more than likely still recovering from the injury you sustained during your car accident. What if you knew what questions to ask to help narrow down candidates and simplify the process? Below are seven important questions to ask your car accident attorney to understand how they will handle your case and what you can expect:

What was the outcome? Even though an attorney specializes in personal injury doesn’t necessarily mean they have significant experience handling car accident cases. Whether they’re inexperienced or just bad at what they do, asking the attorney for previous experience handling car accident cases like yours will help you make an informed decision about who you are hiring. Although previous performance does not guarantee future outcomes, it can help you feel at ease trusting your case with that attorney.

Does your attorney represent car accident victims? It’s important to know that not all attorneys have the same practice areas. Since you’ve been involved in a car accident, you will want to find a personal injury attorney that represents victims of car accident injuries. By hiring an attorney that handles car accident cases, you increase your chances of having a successful outcome.

Has the attorney ever been disciplined because of ethics issues? A majority of attorneys who are still practicing law have not been in disciplinary trouble. However, if the attorney you’re thinking of hiring has been disciplined because of something unethical they did while handling a case, you should consider it a huge red flag. If they’ve been in hot water before, you should find out what they did wrong, why they did it and what the outcome was. Having a history of disciplinary action

Has the lawyer ever handled a similar case to yours?

65

The Times of Canada - July 2018

How long should a personal injury case like yours take? This aspect is important for many reasons. If you’ve been seriously injured and require ongoing medical care, your medical bills could begin to pile up if the trial goes on for a long time and you are relying on the settlement to pay them. It’s also important to know how long you should expect to have your life interrupted by legal proceedings, meetings and so on. While some aspects of trial are out of your attorney’s hands, they can help give you a good idea of how long the trial should last. What is your case worth? The most important question, and the one you are probably anxious to know the answer to – what can I expect to get if I win? Your attorney should be able to give you a good idea of what you can expect to receive in compensation, or at least tell you a range and explain any unknown factors to you. If an attorney tells you a number that seems unrealistic, use your best judgment. Be wary of attorneys that make promises that seem too good to be true. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lauren Bennett is a content copywriter working with Cullan & Cullan M.D., J.D. in Kansas City, Missouri and other personal injury attorneys throughout the country. could affect their ability to properly represent you and handle your case, and could imply they are unprofessional or unfit to handle your case. Can the attorney provide references from past clients? In some jurisdictions, attorneys are allowed to provide references from previous clients. Past client references are a great way to see how the attorney interacts with clients, and if the previous clients were satisfied with the handling and outcome of their case – references are also a good indicator of how the attorney will handle your case. If the jurisdiction does not allow attorneys to release previous client references, checking reviews online is another great way of gauging client satisfaction. Does the attorney charge you on a contingency basis? When a personal injury attorney does not charge you an upfront fee, and instead takes a percentage of the money won in your case, it is known as a contingency fee, because the payment is “contingent upon” the attorney winning your case. This is a common payment method among personal injury attorneys and is typically easier for the client since there are no out of pocket costs. Whether the attorney chooses this form of payment or not, it is important to find out exactly how you will need to pay the lawyer for their services – before you agree to hire them.

epression is called Mano Avasada in Ayurveda. Mano Avasada means inferiority or depression. Every body is busy in this modern and fast running world. So many peoples are suffering from stress, depression and anxiety. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the most common illness worldwide and the leading cause of disability. They estimate that 350 million people are affected by depression, globally.

Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatments are based on Tri Dosha: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. In Ayurveda, a weak Sadhaka Pitta (Agni), that inner fire which is responsible for digesting or processing emotions, is responsible for Depression. “SHRIRAM SATTYA SANDYAM CH VYADHINAM ASRAYO MATAH TATHA SUKHNAM , YOGASTU SUKHNAM KARNAM SAMAH" Weakend ojas (which is the essence of all dhatus) often contributes to this problem. Vata-Prana vayu is responsible for proper functioning of the mind but weakened ojas disturbs the prana vayu which then fails to stimulate the mind, which causes Depression. Genetic, environmental and personality factors are also responsible for causing mood disorders such as depression.Recent studies in modern science have revealed that depression results from an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Yes dreams do come true!!

We all have a dream or two or many in our lives. Heading to our goals, aspirations and dreams become an epic journey of its own when we deposit ourselves in industriously in achieving them. Here, I am going to narrate my story about coming Canada as a visitor, My husband Teji Sandhu, who is a renowned singer and a dafli player in Punjabi and Hindi music industry, had visited Canada for many times, but solo. He had a dream of bringing us (our son Pukhraj Singh and me) along with him. Though, I was not very keen of traveling to Canada but everything started on the day when we all got to know that Teji had some shows over there in coming days. Mr. Vinay Sharma, the Managing Director of ‘The Times of Canada’ magazine sent us sponsorship and we applied for the visa for my son and me. It was like a bolt from the blue when we got our visas confirmed. My husband was extremely joyous because this

time we would be joining him in this trip. At the same time, I was going through a fix that we do not have any relative over there with whom we’ll stay. However, this perplexity didn’t affect our zeal for Canada. Everything resolved for some time after confirmation of tickets. It was hard for us though to leave our parents alone behind, but they lead to believe us that they would be fine in our absence. Finally, the day came when we were leaving for Canada but with the teary eyes. We landed on the land of opportunities, Vancouver Canada. My first impression of Canada was pretty good. As we came out of the flight Canadian Border Security officer checked our passports and immigrant visa. These formalities were completed in just few minutes. We were cordially welcomed by Mr. Vinay Sharma accompanied by his father Late. Sh. Krishan Lal Sharma. The first thing that I was fascinated with here were the traffic rules, that are strictly implemented and followed by the residents. Our son Pukhraj seemed to be very thrilled to see the surroundings out of his window. We all reached home of Mr. Vinay Sharma. His family members received us with great hospitality. We all had our dinner and went to sleep. I woke up early next day. The rain drops gently dropped on my window and looked amazing. Of course, being able to communicate easily with the locals we headed for a walk near around. I noticed how extremely friendly people are! It’s incredible! And damn, Canadians are so good in these small talks. I felt Canada is both walking friendly place and everyone here has a car to drive around. Canada is a multi-cultured country and I have seen that Punjabi community has the biggest share. I was feeling proud to be a Punjabi. One week passed, then another week came and it added a lot to my experiences. We went to explore downtown and Stanley Park Vancouver. I believed that it was one of the most picturesque cities in the world. It has everything to entertain a tourist. We also went to see white rock and Peace Arch Border. I have personally felt that, here respect is given to all kinds of work. There is something called dignity of labor, where all are treated equally. I was astounded to see immense choices in food stuff. Many of them aren’t heard of by me. My son liked the different flavored yogurt the most. One day I took my son to a park nearby. There I got a chance to talk to a local elementary school teacher. I asked her about the teaching and schooling scenario of the country. She introduced me with a multifariousness in the present schooling system. She further told me how children are indulged in many ingenious and innovative activities in schools. I was very impressed to hear everything. Not talking too much, I have a very long list of what I liked about here. I am very happy that as a visitor I got a chance to gather heaps of glorious memories from this country. I pray to God that this country continues to grow like this. In a nutshell, I want to say that it is not only a land of opportunities but a land of multi cultures, dignity of labor and natural beauty. - Neha Sandhu

Summer Skin Care

S

ummers take a heavy toll on the skin as direct

exposure to the sun is detrimental to its natural glow. Here are some tips to keep your skin flawless during this harsh season Taking good care of your skin during this season can be a daunting task as too much exposure to the sun can damage it. Over time, it can also lead to its premature aging, wrinkles, marks, dry skin, and even skin cancer. As if the scorching sun is not enough, the constantly rising pollution level in the air is only making things worse. But it’s not an impossible task to have a healthy skin during this season. All you need to do is to adopt a healthy diet and a disciplined lifestyle.

Healthy lifestyle There are several factors and situations which take a heavy toll on your skin. Stress and erratic lifestyle coupled with exposure to pollution often do irreparable damages to the skin. “The hormones released in a stressful situation lead to poor circulation of blood. This eventually decreases blood supply to the skin, leaving it dry. In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a part of our lives; throughout the day, we

deal with one or other stressful situation. In such scenario, time management is the key to remain stressfree and keep your skin healthy and glowing,” says Dr. Sandeep Kumar, a health expert.

Sweat it out Physical exercise is one of the tried and tested ways to have a glowing skin. Pick up any form of a physical activity, be it pursuing a sport, running, jogging or yoga. Just ensure that you sweat it out at least five times a week. Sweat removes harmful toxins from the body; otherwise, these toxins lead to pimples and blemishes. “Exercise is one of the best ways to get rid of those toxins. During workouts, blood flow to the skin increases and it improves neuronal stimulation and allows the sweat glands to increase their functions and get rid of the toxins. Exercise not only flushes out toxins but also produces natural oils that help skin look supple and young,” informs Karan Gajera, a fitness trainer.

vegetables and aim for at least five portions a day. Betacarotene, found in pumpkin, carrots and sweet potatoes, and lutein, found in papaya and spinach, are potent antioxidants, important for normal skin cell development and healthy skin tone,” says a Dr. Sudheer Gehlot.

To do list · Eat non-spicy food · Say no to coffee · Opt for less icy drinks · Cut down on smoking · Avoid direct sun

Eat healthy We become what we eat. So if we consume spicy and oily meals throughout the day, then it’s our skin that bears the brunt of our unhealthy eating habits. “Fruits and vegetables contain powerful antioxidants that help protect the skin from the cellular damages caused by free radicals, which are caused by smoking, pollution, and sunlight. These can cause wrinkling and age spots. Eat a rainbow of colourful fruit and

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

The Times of Canada - July 2018

Contribute your bit

A

n increasing number of tourists are conscious of the environmental impact of international travel and enquiring about steps they can take to mitigate the impact of their travel. A majority of urban tourists want to learn about how they can leave little to no ecological footprint behind when they undertake a wildlife tour. Individually, each one of these choices makes only a small difference. But collectively, becoming more conscious about these little things can have a huge impact.

SUPPORT THE LOCAL ECONOMY

Though not always cheaper, purchasing locally made crafts and souvenirs ensures your contribution to the economy will have a more direct and positive impact. Skip the markets geared toward tourists and look for flea markets, often held in public spaces on the weekends. Look for businesses that use

AVOID THE PLANE

• Passport • Wedding • Graduation • Family Portrait • Photo Restoration • Fashion & Glamour

Try and avoid air travel as much as possible. As such there is an emerging “slow travel” trend where in you are encouraged to go to fewer places and spending more time in each. Train travel or even travelling by road is a good way to do this. Not only will you experience a deeper sense of place, you’ll also decrease your carbon footprint.

SAY NO TO PLASTIC

One of the biggest culprits of the deteriorating ozone layer is plastic and travelers are the major contributors of throw-away plastic bottles and bags at ecological sites. Be a part of the solution by opting for locally purified water in recyclable glass bottles and opting for cloth bags that can be used for shopping purpose.

organic and sustainable methods.

RESPECT THE WILDLIFE

Just say no to anything and everything that promotes trafficking rare and endangered wildlife products as souvenirs. Also never feed wildlife, for any reason. Feeding animals makes them habituated to and reliant on humans, and often leads to attacks (and subsequent death for the animal).

DISPOSE SENSIBLY

Take any leftover soap, shampoo, or toothpaste with you. Unused portions are often thrown away, and you can reuse the plastic bottles in the future. Return maps, brochures and other tourist info once you’re finished with them. Remember to dispose your trash sensibly.

TRAVEL CAREFULLY

We travel for fun, pleasure, adventure, bonding and if we add consciousness to it, our whole journey will become all the

more productive. Just by leaving the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door for the duration of your stay, you can cut down on chemical cleansing agents, electricity used in vacuuming, and the washing of bed linens. Traveling carefully, with time and attention, means that we can have the travel experience we want while having a positive impact on the places we visit.
