IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE COMPLICATED. ONE MIGHT BELIEVE THAT WHAT WE’VE COME TO DEFINE AS “LUXURY” SHOULD BE WROUGHT WITH A COMPLICATED BACK STORY. A PROVENANCE, A PERILOUS STRING OF WOVEN TALES DESIGNED TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT SOMETHING, ANYTHING REALLY, IS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE. EVEN WHEN IT ISN’T, WHEN THAT SOMETHING ISN’T REALLY THAT IMPORTANT AT ALL. AT LEAST NOT TO YOU OR I THAT IS. IN THE REAL WORLD, IT IS THE SIMPLE THINGS THAT ARE TRULY LUXURIOUS. NO STRINGS ATTACHED. NO DRAWN-OUT, “PINKIE-UP” EXPLANATIONS NEEDED.
LUXURY IS WHAT LUXURY ISN’T. IN THE SCHEME OF THINGS, LUXURY CAN BE THOSE THINGS THAT ARE RIGHT IN FRONT OF US; CASUALLY STREWN SPOTS ON A WALL, PERHAPS. BUT THOSE SPOTS, TO YOU AND I, THE DREAMERS, THE CREATIVES, ARE INSTEAD A REMINDER THAT THE STAR-STUDDED SKY OF A BREAKING DAWN IS THE ONLY LIMIT TO ONE’S FUTURE. A REMINDER THAT THERE EXISTS THE STURDY HAND OF A CARING ARTIST WORKING TIRELESSLY TO BRING, IF ONLY FOR A FLEETING MOMENT, THE GOLDEN GLIMMER OF SOMETHING SPECIAL TO THE DAY AT HAND.

By the time you’re reading this issue I’ll most likely have retired to my chambers for a long winter’s nap. There were so many other ways that I could have phrased that statement but I was afraid that had I written them some of you might have sent help.
The D’LUX ROAD TRIP featured in this issue, is also a pairing of sorts, combining the MASERATI GHIBLI with YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK .
But, of course, there is rarely any real sleep for the weary. Especially when the weary is an overachieving perfectionist with OCD tendencies and a penchant for late night Google searches. It certainly doesn’t help that we’re making preparations for the 2016 editorial season, and putting together a soon to be launched publication that aims to introduce the public to artists and craftspeople as well as their innovative wares. We’ll be sharing more about the launch of TheLIST in the very near future.
Did I also mention that we’ve tasted and shared as part of our winter coverage seven rare spirits? We call it WISHFUL DRINKING .
As you may have already noticed, the team and I at DCMHQ have continued to refine our overall aesthetics and format. Each issue continues to be a work in progress but we’re getting closer every day to reaching our goal of editorial perfection.
Alright kiddies, I do believe I hear my pajamas calling. Of course, the team and I wish you a very Happy New Year!
Finally, we’ve included a special highlight of the 2015 WEST EDGE DESIGN FAIR , sharing our luxury design favorites.
New to this issue, and a part of future issues to come, you’ll find DETAILS , home to current events in the world of luxury design. We’ve also expanded on our DESTINATIONS component, SAN FELIPE, B.C. being the first of our highlighted locales. And finally, THE26 , our list of luxury obsessions, has grown into a larger section of its own. To celebrate the holiday season, we couldn’t resist curating our own, very special 2016 GIFT GUIDE , pairing objects of extreme luxury with more down to earth gifts for those of our champagne taste, beer budget readers.

VEYRON SUCCESSOR TO BE NAMED AFTER ACCLAIMED FRENCH DRIVER
The last of Bugatti’s 450 Veyrons, La Finale, left the workshop early 2015. Since then the exclusive French automaker has kept under close guard the specifics of the supercar’s replacement. Ahead of its world debut, which is set to occur during the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March, the Molsheimbased company has confirmed speculation that the upcoming vehicle will be called Chiron, a nod to Louis Chiron, a successful race car driver for Bugatti in the 20s and 30s. It is rumored that the Chiron will be fitted not only with a 16-cylinder power plant capable of achieving a mind-blowing top speed of 288 mph, accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in a projected 2.3 seconds, but also with a spectacular $2.5 million price tag. With reports that Bugatti has been previewing the Chiron to prospective buyers as early as July of this year, it should come as no surprise that the first 100 units of the Chiron’s planned 500 unit production have already been spoken for. We hope that Santa is listening.

The recently redesigned BMW M6 GT3 is the next to serve as a fast moving canvas on which to portray the graphic visions of talented artists. Joining an elite group of renowned individuals including Andy Warhol and David Hockney, artists Cao Fei and John Baldessari have been given the task of transforming two of the GT3s into art for the BMW Art Car Collection. Chosen by a jury of museum directors and curators, the internationally renowned artists represent both the youngest and oldest to be featured in the collection’s 40-years of pairing cutting-edge technology with the creative energies of contemporary artists.
The 2016 Winter Las Vegas Market runs January 24th to 28th at the World Market Center.
The BMW Group plans to showcase the transformed racers in museums in 2017, following their introduction to the racing community.

PHAIDON PRESS $59.95
It is through an encyclopedic compilation of, over-scaled black and white murals plastered against the structural boundaries of gritty back streets, candid snapshots of passerby in-the-moment, and staid portraits hung formally in minimal white galleries that the artist only known as JR answers the question he so abruptly asks the reader. Words, in this case, mean little in his tome developed with Phaidon Press for the artist turned author and philosopher adopts the adage “A picture is worth a thousand words” letting image after nondescript image answer on his behalf. His is not a glossy, sugarcoated answer, of course. Though neither is short and long-term effect art has on an ever more volatile world. Not that either really matter as one thing is for certain, Art, especially his art, isn’t about coming to a supposedly happy ending. Instead, it is his highly graphic brand of art (not to mention his unapologetic volume) that is a catalyst for doing rather than seeing, bringing about a deeper insight into and eventual understanding of the human experience.

SERENITY and ROSE QUARTZ
PANTONE ANNOUNCES THE COLORS FOR 2016
SERENI T Y 1 5 - 3 9 19
R O SE Q UA R T Z 13 - 15 2 0
Each year, Pantone, the industry leader in the communication of color, selects a single color to serve as an expression of current cultural happenings and social climate. For 2016, the color giant chose, for the first time ever, not one color but instead the blend of two shades. Rose Quartz, the first of the two hues, brings warmth to traditional pink. Serenity, on the other hand, is a cool blue with a noticeable slant towards violet. According to Pantone, the two distinctly feminine shades reflect “connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace”, a response to the market’s desire for security, well-being, and reassurance in light of current world affairs. Pantone also cited a “societal movement towards gender equality” and the overall blurring of gender as a basis for their selections. So far, the response from the design community has been mixed, with commentary ranging from an unadulterated love for the pair to others in the industry seeking something a bit more masculine. What we do know for certain, however, is that we can anticipate an onslaught of pink and blue toned products coming to market in the coming months.

The Brothers Grimm Hans Christian Andersen Charles Perrault Todd Eberle Of course, all of these great men are storytellers, we know that as much. But what is it that these literary figureheads have in common? What is their connective thread? With Castles, Princesses, and Carriages their cornerstones, it all comes down to one thing the contemporary depiction of the Fairy Tale. For Perrault it was Cinderella and her fragile glass slipper. The Danish Andersen took to the seas with The Little Mermaid. The Brothers Grimm let it all hang out with Rapunzel. And for Eberle? His castle is St. Emmeram palace and his princess, Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis. The marriage of Gloria, at the time the Countess von Schoenburg-Glachau, to Prince Johannes von Thurn und Taxis in 1980 and their sumptuous lifestyle is a fairy tale in and of its own right. But it is the sprawling Palace that is the subject of Eberle’s own “looking glass”. It is through his lens that the real life working castle comes to life, 12th and 14th century cloisters becoming a theatrical accompaniment to the Princess’ own art collection. Koons on Rococo, Warhols on neo-Renaissance, and Harings on painted door frames are the royal subjects of this particularly delightful tome. The carriage you ask? Don’t worry, Eberle has included several of those as well. Minus the mice, of course. www. ri zzo li . co m PHOTO BY BRANDON SMITH COVER PHOTO COURTESY OF RIZZOLI

In design, it is most often the aesthetic treatments that are the most linear, the most simple in their appearance that are the most painstaking to create. The facade of Canberra artist Chelsea Lemon’s Pine Cone Cabinet may appear to be just haphazard flitches of wood applied to a flat surface. What her elaborate parquetry treatment really is, however, is evidence that she must have the patience of a saint, investing countless hours attempting straight lines and perfectly matched angles.

If there is something, some great lesson, that must be kept in mind when designing for any brand dedicated to servicing the needs of pedestrians everywhere, it is that there is no other surface viewed more than the floor. When the founders of Galet, a French footwear brand known for luxurious men’s slipper shoes, decided to open their first flagship, they took this lesson to heart, tasking artist Henry Krokatsis with the application of his style of art the reuse of reclaimed materials - in the creation of a stunning work of art under foot. With every waking moment, the future of signifigant architecture continues to find itself hanging in perilous balance. Rising land values and decaying cultural values tend to find themselves at odds with abandoned structures devoid of a modern-day purpose. Sadly, these important vestiges of times past usually lose, meeting a destructive fate. There are times, however, that historic relics find a supportive voice, becoming a cornerstone of the neighborhoods that once forgot about them. The historically-inspired M.Y. TARANSAY, a 128-foot yacht executed by ROSSINAVI featuring interiors imagined by STUDIO TASSIN DESIGN.
For some time something has been missing in the design of modern-day ocean going vessels. Call it a yearning for times past. Or maybe just a desire to dress in all white; from the Top-siders on my feet to a straw boater resting just so atop my golden locks. Wait! Piercing the gray mist and tepid waves is M.Y. Taransay. Casting aside the streamlined decks and equally spaced portholes, she instead is cloaked in the spirit of vessels past, as if she has just returned from Martha’s Vineyard circa 19-Kennedy-3. Why sail into what can only be a bland future when, instead, one can sail full steam into such a wonderfully gilded past? p h oto s by W i o l e t ta Kowa l s ka , co u r te sy of Ro s s i n a v i www.rossinavi.it | www.studiotassindesign.com

Th e G E O M E T R I C W O R K o f a r t i s t L O U I S E DE WEGER hangs in a home designed by THOMAS ARCHER HOMES.
I’ll be frightfully honest... I love works of art that appear at face value to be relatively simple in their creation but that in reality require more than the artist’s fair share of sweat, tears, and lost hair. In the cheerfully abstract visualizations of artist Louise de Weger can be found just that, a kaleidoscope of vibrant, off-beat polygonal shapes. One can only wonder, however, if hidden in the artist’s closet is a canvas adorned only with circles. photo by Red Rabbit Photography www.louisedewegerdesigns.com

Circulating is a joke that my cravings for great tacos were ultimately the reason I applied for a SENTRI pass. Being just 20 minutes from the United States / Mexico border, the joke is only half true. Though there have been frequent opportunities for exploration south of the border, my Mexico experiences had been limited to the occasional Tijuana taco run. Head east on Highway 8, through the border crossing at Mexical, journey south about five hours on a newly paved, remarkably straight road. The destination is San Felipe, a quiet desert community that lingers along the east coast of Baja California. An invitation to visit found myself not motoring the lengthy highway but instead, sitting just 18 inches behind one of two pilots at the helm of an 11-passenger Cessna, the salty remnants of an airport margarita on my lips. Although San Felipe was born as a fishing village, the adjacent Sea of Cortez an abundant source of several varieties of fish, at the end of the millennium it had found a second calling – as a tourist destination. The allure of owning property beach side (San Felipe is one of the few places in Mexico where Americans own rather than lease the land) at a fraction of the cost, the short distance from the United States, and the wonderfully temperate weather attracted a steady flow of snowbirds and week-enders. Cue the collapse of the housing market. Hanging in the air just before touching down at the quaint municipal airport on the outskirts of San Felipe, the makings of future roads and unfinished construction can be seen, both reminders of the town’s anticipated yet unfulfilled prosperity. Where other towns of a similar variety have accepted the hand dealt them before folding out of the game entirely, however, San Felipe has upped the ante. The addition of direct commercial flights from San Diego and the repositioning of the largest of their beach side resorts has given San Felipe a place at the table and
50
n o. 2 6
with it, the possibility of great rewards. Cabo, Ensenada, and Rosarita have all made a name for themselves in the United States. San Felipe has created a similar opportunity. What San Felipe brings to this particular table, however, is one important element that other, more well-known Mexican destinations can no longer claim – the element of discovery. For me and many, the thrill of the hunt is what makes travel worth the hassle of traveling. The search for something that has been viewed by few, tasted by fewer, or is still rumored to not actually exist. I choose not to be the typical “let’s go here because it’s AAA rated” type of tourist. San Felipe and her winding trails of sand, marked by the faint tracks of ATVS, are the promise of something interesting, something new, a surprise of sorts. They are experiences that can leave a mark. Or in my case, a scar. It will be interesting to watch as the beach village experiences her rebirth as what the future has in store is still left to be seen. Until then, San Felipe’s gems await their discovery by those who enjoy the hunt. Did I mention the Naval Hospital?

Master Distiller David Stewart filled a European Oak Sherry Hogshead cask with a single malt in 1963. Fifty years later the cask’s contents were ready to be emptied into just 15 hand blown and etched glass bottles. Encased in a specially crafted wooden box made of 49 stacked wood rings finished with a milled brass closure, The Fifty is a mixologist’s unicorn. If you’ve never been one to appreciate the warmth of a refined cognac or maybe just haven’t gotten up the nerve to try just yet, the quintessence will immediately beg of you one question: “why have i waited so long?”. To achieve the delightful sweet + spice taste structure, the distiller blends grande champagne cognacs including age old liquors from the family’s private cellars as well as others that have aged over 100 years. To Enjoy quintessence is, quite s i m p l y, t o t a s t e a n e n t i re century of cognac history. The Rose Gold embellished interior of the ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS’ W RAIT H: In s pire d by Musi c.
Yes this magazine has a habit of gushing lavishly over nearly every introduction made by this venerable British marque. But how could we not when one of the cornerstones of their automotive philosophy is to take the best and make it better? The result of their faithful commitment to design excellence has been the realization of a number of fanciful one-off vehicles. Wraith: Inspired by Music is just one of those concept-turned-reality vehicles. Why this particular Wraith? The design team in the UK has replaced every surface that might have been wood with a warm, tonal rose gold further accentuating the expansive interior with highly detailed speaker housings also in rose gold. Needless to say, there is no need to view the world through Rose-Colored glasses when you’re driving them. Pr i ce Avai lab le Up o n Re q ue s t www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com

Growing up my parents had always wanted to give me the world. The world may certainly be a lofty aspiration, however, I’d certainly settle for Yves Klein’s 1961 interpretation. A stunning masterpiece in crystal, Lalique tasked its artisans to recreate using the lost wax technique and a very specific formula of copper and cobalt oxide the Terre Bleue crystal globe Klein originally envisioned for the French marque. SERRIFORM SILVER, a sculptural vessel craf ted entirely of 925 Silver by UK ar tist Kevin Gr ey.
Once upon a time it was commonplace for the well-to-do family to have in their possession a grand set of silver hand crafted especially for them. Times have changed since then and one is hard-pressed to even find real silver flatware in a family’s scullery. Suffice it to say that most homes are devoid of silver for two reasons - economic and aesthetics. Silver is either too expensive or has been ornately “done up”. UK Artist Kevin Grey, however, is taking the art of silver smithing in a highly contemporary, distinctly sculptural direction. His Serriform Silver bowl, for example, is almost Gehry like in it’s progression. And like Gehry, Grey has managed to give a lightweight, sinuous appearance to over 9000 grams of 925 silver. This particular piece now resides in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia, however, Grey is accepting commissions for future iterations of the stunning bowl. Considering the ease with which it is possible to become an ordained minister thanks in great part to the World Wide Web, and, of course, the vast number of people who have actually completed the process (my father included) in order to perform the rites of nuptial passage for friends and family, it seems that the next logical step would be to ensure the continued success of those couples entangled in holy Internet matrimony with the installation of one’s very own Confessional. SPOTLIGHT ON
TAYLOR DONSKER
TAYLOR DONSKER DESIGN
We fell in love with his bronze work on display. We drooled over his corset joint. Here, we get to know the Los Angeles based furniture designer.
ON WHO TO WATCH Steven Haulenbleek, Stefan Thoreen, Christopher Allen
OPENING STATEMENT Luxury is simply the ability to do whatever you want, whenever you want.
ON MATERIALS I have recently begun working with cast bronze, and I would like to further explore the opportunities that lie in casting metal. When I speak to my local foundry, I ask them how we can explore imperfections in casting, rather than trying to create flawless sculptures.
DEFINING HIMSELF Grain: Interlocking, meaning strong, yet also one of the more difficult types to work. Strength: Fearlessness, in the sense that I am willing to attempt that which is unfamiliar, unnerved by the possibility of failure. Weakness: stubbornness, self explanatory. Origin: A Samurai in 13th Century Japan End: I hope to be buried in the crotch of a tree so that one day my face may meet a sawyer. ON 3-D PRINTING I recently became fascinated with jewelry, and while many have said that my corset joint is like jewelry embedded in a tabletop, I am more interested in the way jewelry alters our perception of the people wearing it and the way that it makes those wearing it feel differently about themselves. 3-D printing has advanced to allow the ability to print precious metals and I am interested in utilizing that technology to prototype jewelry designs with a similar aesthetic to my furniture designs. ON HERITAGE California is in my DNA. My family has lived in LA for two generations and I believe that has had a profound influence on my taste. My grandfather began a custom woman’s coat business in downtown LA just after serving in WWII. He both ran the business with 20 employees and also designed the coats themselves. His attention to detail and preference for high quality furs and fabrics were key to his success and I feel that I have him to thank for my similar sensibilities. ON THE RAW EDGE The raw edge reinforces the fact that wood is a completely natural material, the product of a tree. When I cast the raw edge in bronze, I am both emphasizing this notion and honoring the memory of it, like a statue of an iconic figure. When we remove the raw edge, wood becomes dimensional lumber, less about the material itself than the object that it is a part of.
Bishop,
Brian
ON THE FUTURE I’d like to work on large scale sculptural commissions, continue working on custom commissions, and further develop a product line of signature furniture pieces. At some point I think my background in Architecture will lead to a holistic vision of a home designed, built, and furnished solely by me and my company. LAST WORDS The furniture joint that describes me is ... Our signature Corset, it is refined, functional, and totally unique. I can’t live without ... The ability to schedule my week, month, and life by virtue of owning my own business. My guilty pleasure is ... I love a good drink, whether it be a peaty Scotch or a peppery Mezcal prepared neat with a splash of cool water. On my bucket list is ... I want to own a California Walnut Orchard where I can design and build a home and a woodshop. It is such a romantic notion of being able to live and work around all stages of a tree’s life. From my childhood I wish I still had ... I have a fuzzy memory of being at the beach as a young child, with a group of friends. I recall fishing a fossil from the shore, bragging about it to all of my friends, only to have a friend enviously throw it back into the ocean. But on second thought, maybe the memory is more valuable than the fossil itself. www.taylordonsker.com twitter: @taylordonsker instagram: @taylordonsker facebook: taylor donsker design

S POTLIGHT ON
CBM WOODWORKS
CASEY McAFFERTY
ON PAST LIVES It wasn’t that I had woodworking in my blood, or that I always knew what I wanted to do. What I did have, was a father who always taught me the value of using my hands to build, create, and fix. As a New York City Firefighter, and a father of 5 children, my father was a jack-of-all-trades, and I was always his assistant. Whether it was plumbing, masonry, or metal work, my father did it all! Woodworking was the medium that I felt closest to and had the passion to continue. ON MATH Math skills translate to everything in life. Math helped with both banking and woodworking. I’m just thankful I had a great education. ON HIS DESIGNS One word - simplicity. Using traditional quality joinery to connect clean, bold lines, to make beautiful and functional furniture. ON TRENDS I always try to keep up with the newest designs and furniture. I think the only way to stay successful as a furniture maker, is to continuously evolve, and keep pushing your level of design ... But the whole plumbing pipe legs trend has to go. ON WHO TO WATCH Too many to list them all! But two in particular would be Greg of “West of Noble” and Garrett of “GN Woodwork” they both make and design inspiring furniture. There are so many talented craftsmen out there. I think this new world of Social Media, specifically Instagram, displays this regularly. ON LUXURY Luxury for me, specifically in this time of my life, is waking up, having a coffee with my wife, then riding my bike to work and doing something I love all day long. Coming from the busy life of commuting to Manhattan everyday, this change of lifestyle is indeed a luxury in itself ON MATERIALS Currently I am building a collection inspired by the ancient Japanese technique of Shou-Sugi-Ban. It is the process of taking raw wood, torching it to a specific char, then wire brushing to take off the disposable ash pieces and finishing with Tung oil. The torching creates a natural finish, which is bug and weather repellent. It’s a tedious process, but the end result is a beautiful black finish with unending character.
ON THE FUTURE I have a collection called “Drought” that I will be launching shortly before the New Year. It will feature functional furniture pieces that bring awareness to the drought we are experiencing here in California, and ways we can conserve water. All of the pieces will be Charred Black with a torch to represent dryness, and turquoise inlays will be used to represent the dwindling water. Eco-wise wool, Grey Glass, and Brass will also work their way into the collection. LAST WORDS The furniture joint that describes me is ... The Dovetail. It illustrates great craftsmanship and timeless joinery and furniture. Classically, a hidden joint, I show them in my furniture for a modern twist. I can’t live without ... Good Coffee is something I can’t seem to live without. Even at times in my life where I am struggling to pay the bills, I will still find myself at a small, artisinal coffee shop, spending upwards of $5 on a small cup of coffee. My guilty pleasure is ... Watching TV shows like American Pickers, Pawn Stars, and Antique Roadshow. I have an extreme fascination of finding out the history of old relics and what their value is. On my bucket list is ... Hiking the John Muir trail with my wife Briana. From my childhood I wish I still had ... A prewar Stanley number 5 Hand Plane used for woodworking that my grandfather gave me when I was younger. He didn’t give it to me because I was into woodworking, I just thought it looked cool and was fun to play with. Uncovering it again when I really got into woodworking was such a treat. Unfortunately I misplaced it on my move to the west coast 1.5 years ago. www.cbmwoodworks.com instagram: @cbmwoodworks
Back in my designing days it wasn’t uncommon for clients to have simply no idea what they wanted. Or, for that matter, what they liked. They liked Chinoiserie. They liked shapes. They liked florals. If only TRES TINTAS BARCELONA’S DAMASKO MURAL represented by N EWWAL L had have been
