Presidential Perspective October is thankfully over, what with all the wildfires burning in California. Our part of the state was mostly spared and I hope everyone came through okay. Unfortunately, I missed British Car Day, so I will have to read the write-up just like everyone else to find out what happened. With the Election Luncheon just a week away, preparations are in full swing. Everything is ready to go. Everyone should be registered by now as the last day to register is/was Friday, November 1. Make sure to copy the directions and to park in the correct parking structure. Since it is our first year at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center at San Diego State University, you might want to leave yourself some extra time to find the Alumni Center. Remember, voting is only in person, so you have to attend to vote. Final preparations are taking shape for our Holiday Party – the buffet looks fantastic. Registration will be open very, very soon. This year we are holding it at the Silvergate Yacht Club, courtesy of your host, Jim Hallameyer. The board is planning more drives and overnight stays early next year, so I will keep you updated as we finalize plans. Until then, take care Mark

IEJC Jagstravaganza & Concours d’Elegance October 4th through 6th, 2019 Recap by Pete Rieth Pictures by Dave & Matt Allen, Nedra Rummell, Chuck Leuthen & Pete Rieth We all looked forward to our return to Idyllwild, California. The site of the 2019 Jagstravaganza is a forested resort at the 5400-foot level located in the San Jacinto Mountains in Riverside County. The Inland Empire Jaguar Club hosted this exciting annual event at the rustic Idyllwild Inn on the weekend of 4 – 6 October. Participants from IEJC, JOCLA, Suncoast (FL) and SDJC began arriving on Friday afternoon. The inbound drive along scenic back country hill roads was spectacular under clear blue skies. Although damage from last year’s wildfires was still quite apparent, most roads were again open. The Friday afternoon Welcome Reception was very well attended and exuberant as good friends rejoined at sunset around bountiful hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Most of those already on scene then moved to the nearby Gastrognome Restaurant for a sumptuous dinner prior to retiring at the Inn and other lodgings. Saturday morning dawned again clear and bright, though a tad chilly. The hospitality cabin was cheery with assorted fruits, pastries and lots of hot coffee & teas. As the Entrants’ cars moved into position and last-minute cleanup took place, the Chief Concours Judge for the event, Charles Hallums (JOCLA Chief Judge) gathered the 13 judges from various clubs to make their team assignments and to provide detailed expectations and instructions. Emphasis, as always, was on strict adherence to the philosophy and letter of the JCNA Concours d’Elegance Rule Book. “Rags Down” was announced punctually at 10 AM by IEJC President Mike Zavos and formal judging commenced under warming blue skies. A lunch break from 11:30 to 1 PM preceded the afternoon judging session which was completed on time. Chief Judge Hallums, assisted by Southwest Regional Director Mark Mayuga (JOCLA), tabulated and cross-checked the score sheets. Meanwhile, a lively raffle led by Mike Zavos, his friend Ella and Lisa Ellis (JOCLA) distributed a wide selection of useful and whimsical prizes to the group. Cold beer and sodas were very welcome to the Entrants and Judges after their labors on the field. The awards banquet on Saturday night was held at the nearby Ferro Restaurant in a private outdoor setting. Introductory remarks by Mike Zavos were followed with an interesting talk by Clive Collins, Owner and Manager of XKS Motorsports in San Luis Obispo, and brief highlights of the Coventry Foundation, its goals and accomplishments presented by Pete Rieth. The banquet was very well attended, with participants bundled up against the evening chill, seats near the pizza oven in strong demand, and great fun had by all as the event results were announced and trophies awarded. Top score of SDJC participants went to Tom Krefetz who logged 100 points for his Series 1 E-Type OTS. Sunday morning witnessed departure of the many participants as they broke camp and headed back ‘down the hill’ to their homes, bearing many fond memories of a convivial weekend among the pines. Cheers, Pete Rieth

British Car Day October 12th Recap by Dave Putnam Pictures by Dave Allen The British Car Day Event was held on Saturday October 12, 2019 at the Spanish Landing Park East. Spanish Landing Park is a beautiful location on the bay with gorgeous views of the water and hundreds of expensive yachts in the marinas. This year there were two featured Marques. We celebrated the 60 th Anniversary of the Mini and the 70th Anniversary of Lotus. Special awards were given to the People’s choice for each of these marques. There were 215 British cars registered for the event, with 20 of them being Jaguars. Last year there was a prediction of rain for the Event, which didn’t happen, but it kept the attendance down around 150 cars. Much improved this year. The Jaguars were divided into 7 classes this year, as compared to 5 classes last year. We opened up more classes so that it would be a better fit for all the types of Jaguars that registered. Last year we tried to fit everyone into 5 classes, and it didn’t work as well. We had 9 E-Types, 1 XK120, 2 XKR’s and an XK8, 2 F-Types, 3 XJS, 1 S-type R and an XKSS. If you were the only car in a class you got a First-Place trophy, which was an engraved Beer Mug. The E-Type class was the only class to award a Second and Third Place due to the number of entrants. Overall it was a beautiful day, and everyone seemed to enjoy the venue. Trophies were handed out at 2 PM and then cars started to depart. Two years ago, Ali and Bob Proctor’s 69 E-Type didn’t want to go home and had to be put on a flatbed truck. This year Malcolm Lloyd Smith’s E-Type as well as Joanie Berkwicz’s Mini went home on flatbeds. See you next year, Dave

Notes from the Concours Judges Tent November 2019 By Pete Rieth, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club This month’s article, unlike my usual columns, takes advantage of the interregnum between wind-down of the 2019 concours season and spin-up of the 2020 season to wander along other lanes. Other Lanes. THINK YOU’RE A JAGUAR EXPERT? PROVE IT! TEST YOUR JAGUAR CAR KNOWLEDGE BY TAKING THIS SHORT CAR QUIZ. https://www.zeroto60times.com/quiz/jaguar-quiz/ .You will be given 30 seconds to answer each of 12 questions. The quicker you correctly answer the question, the more points you receive. When you finish, you will be able to review your results. This being Holiday Season, it’s NOT a good time to take risks or show off, lest you see something like this in your rear-view mirrors:

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! A note from the Editor: Great quiz Pete! I took it and while I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, at least it didn’t ask me what interregnum means! -Ed.

Editor’s Reminders Reminder #1: Remember when going out of town to print out a copy of the cover page of the most recent “Jaguar Tracks” and take it with you. When you find a good setting just snap a picture of yourselves holding up the cover page with a nice view of the scene behind you. And if you’ve got your Jag in the shot, even better. Then all you need to do when you get home is email the picture to chuckleuthen@cox.net along with a description of your location and I’ll do the rest to feature it in a “Where in the Word” article!

Reminder #2: Don’t forget about our “Getting to Know” feature! It’s intended to help all of us get to know each of you just a little bit better. Tell us about yourselves. Tell us how you became enamored with Jaguars, how you came to be part of our great club and anything else you’d like to share. Don’t be shy. If you don’t tell us about yourselves we’re just going to make stuff up. Might as well let the cat out of the bag and send me an email with a write-up and a picture to chuckleuthen@cox.net and I’ll run a feature!
