I S F O R A U G H N NOT VERA It may be that we’ve just pissed off the Gods of Fashion. Don’t get us wrong, the tailored designs of one Ms. Wang do certainly elevate the aisles they grace. But for us, when it comes to such a monumental occasion, the swaths of fabric into which we may slip should do more than just elevate. Finding inspiration in the most unbridal of influences, whipping them into diaphanous, fantastical, and, dare we say, mischievous vestments, it is Kate Pankoke doing just that. A Project Runway alum, the darling talent behind Elaya Vaughn Bridal isn’t simply designing dresses in her quiet Washington DC studio. Here, the Chicago transplant brings to virgin cloth the inner personalities found deep within each of her brides, the unique couture gowns becoming examples of personal expression untamed by the rules of ceremonious restraint. So, Vera, we do love your work. But when it comes to our special day, we just happen to love Kate more. BEG YND E L S E I completed a full painter’s apprenticeship from 1993 to 1998, specializing in wallpaper and decorative painting techniques. I became a teacher at the painter’s craft schools in Aarhus and Odense teaching color theory, composition, decoration, history of the Danish painting craftsmanship. [My] first company in 2009 [was] a specialist in restoration of historical and listed buildings – mainly restoring marbled and wood-grained surfaces but also making customized artworks directly onto walls and ceilings. In 2011 I started Zilmers ApS, at the same time [resigning] from my wonderful teaching position. H YG G E My years as a teacher taught me about process and how to grow from experimenting. I pushed some of the most talented painters in Denmark to perfection and it gave me new insights in return. My path has given me 23 years of practical experience and a lot of different techniques that I draw upon when I analyze, restore, or replicate historic wallpapers. When I replicate or restore historic wallpapers and surfaces I do not use my own creativity. These specific jobs are very delicate and demand perfection. I am only the ‘caretaker’ of the old masters’ designs and skills. I must honor their work with my respect and try my best to show just how amazing their craftsmanship really was. I study their different techniques, color combinations, contrasts, compositions, and especially patina. The ancient master painters teach me and inspire me to revitalize the craftsmanship and techniques.

I leave minor perfections – this is also a tradition – craftsmen are human and humans are not perfect. We must try to reach perfection but also recognize that we are not gods. VÆ KS T I team up with the best painters, architects, and conservators in the country to be certain about the fine details of pigment, paper, binders, etc. I’m not afraid of accepting a challenge or cooperating with other colleagues when the job demands it. My first assignment replicating historic wallpaper was at Tirsbaek Castle in 2012. They actually requested my Bowler Hat design for an entrance hall but ended up ordering restoration and reproduction of their 100-year-old pea flower wallpaper after seeing articles and samples of my work. Since then I have been quite busy restoring antique wallpapers in cooperation with the National Museum of Denmark’s conservators and architects, redesigning historic wallpapers for Danish castles, museums, listed historical buildings.

I hope that I can bring back decorative paint into modern architecture and interior design with my own designs. I would like for the techniques to survive. They are not outdated; they have been used for thousands of years and they will continue to be so if modern master painters just find ways to interpret them and use them It is an old trades tradition to leave a mark or signature in modern contexts. Most of my designs draw on ageand I ask every customer if I am allowed to place my old patterns from different cultures. 12

In 2009 I made my first handmade and gilded wallpaper design, which was accepted and exhibited at the prestigious Salon Bergamo in Italy. This made me continue to design wallpaper. I exhibited at Salon Versailles in 2010; sold my first bespoke, handmade wallpaper in 2011. I started exhibiting my wallpaper designs at fairs in Copenhagen and found there was a market for my designs.

A FAMILY LEGACY For most, the Bugatti name brings to mind record breaking speed and a mastery of automotive seduction, usually by way of the racy Veyron and curvaceous Type 57C. Upon closer inspection one finds that ambitious experimentation and artistic excellence runs deep in the Bugatti family, becoming a collective thread that spanned three generations. Beginning with Giovanni Bugatti, a stonemason, and son Carlo, a decorative artist, beauty was a trademark embodied in the work of sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti and Ettore, the father of the French automotive brand. Jean continued the love of seductive bodies while sisters Lydia and L’Ebé contributed to the family’s artistic history by way of written word and painted surfaces. The recently renovated Petersen Automotive Museum pays tribute to the entire Bugatti family, highlighting their individual influences on the venerable brand as part of the current Art Of Bugatti exhibit. Combining both specimens of automotive perfection with the furniture, sculptures, and paintings - all products of the Bugatti family - the exhibit is a can’t miss for automotive enthusiasts and those in the designed arts.

For the past 175 years, Cunard has not only emphasized but led the way in elevating the travel experience, christening decadent ocean-going passenger liners that continue to set the benchmark for luxury even today. While it is their ships, the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 for example, that have firmly established their mastery of the voyage itself, it is their architecturally important buildings in Liverpool, New York, and Southampton that define the epitome of arrival and departure. Specially commissioned as part of the recent Queen Mary 2 refurbishment, photographer Paul Ward was given a master key to Cunard’s three heritage buildings and tasked with finding and capturing on film the spectacular personalities of each historic property. Seen through the lens of Ward, the architectural and ornamental elements built into each of the three properties become strikingly powerful examples of just what it means to travel well. It is during that moment, if ever so fleeting, that I wonder “what if?” What if I were to leave it all behind? And with the opening of a closet door or a glance in the direction of shelf after bookstacked shelf, I am hurled back to reality. I’ve never been one to hold on to every little thing for the sake of sentimentality. On the other hand, I’ve never packed a few belongings into a backpack, wandering the crests and valleys of far away lands. I, like most people, just need a little room to breathe. And maybe that’s just it. Maybe one really needs

just a place to exhale. A few feet to call one’s own. To be one’s self. To reflect. But mainly, to just breathe. Highlighted in an equally small-scale volume are six freestanding structures, the skillful works of architect Jeffrey S. Poss, FAIA. Constructed from a multitude of materials – galvanized steel, red cedar, concrete block – each of the compact abodes exist to serve one singular purpose. For these architectural marvels, these Spaces of Serenity, their purpose and reason for being is quite simply to share with their lucky owners a few un-complicated cubic feet in which to accomplish the one task we find so hard to do. Although it is the real world that dictates my need for closet space, it is through the vibrant images and simple illustrations of Poss’ pictorial that I may live vicariously.

It is nestled into the rolling plains that line the Thu Bon river in Vietnam’s Quang Nam Province that one finds the quiet workshops of the country’s silk, mat, and terra cotta artisans and craftspeople. While each of these traditional places of creation dotting the quiet countryside is inspired by and finds a connective thread in the adjacent river, so too does each personify the personalities of the maker residing within. Exuding the appearance of strength and permanence as well as a persona defined by delicate luminosity, the creative studio of artist Le Duc Ha, designed by Tropical Space Co. Ltd., become one with the surrounding environment. Here, the artist and his handicrafts are free to interact with the sun and moonlight that pierce the clay walls of the functional structure. At once its open-work exoskeleton of hand-made brick highlights the organic sensitivities inherent in the artist’s work and encourages connection with the world beyond by inspiring conversation and observation from those passing by.

Not unlike the Morris Chair made wildly popular by 19th century craftsman Gustav Stickley, Chaise Maurice, an adaptation of a once popular Lebanese chair brought to life by design studio David Nicolas, also makes use of a strikingly simple mechanical element to provide a vast spectrum of seating positions.
