KHAYLIE

I S A N AT U R A L B O R N F I G H T E R

FROM THE MOMENT SHE WAS BORN SHE HAS BEEN WAGING A BATTLE FOR HER LIFE It was an advertisement for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Los Angeles that sparked hope in the parents of newborn Khaylie Flowers. Born premature and suffering from Amniotic Band Syndrome, heart disease, and failing lungs, Khaylie’s doctors at home feared the worse. Jessica and Larry, however, refused to give up.

If Khaylie could fight, they could too. Doctors in Los Angeles recommended that a series of intensive treatments take place at Shriners and the LAC+USC Medical Center - over 2,500 miles from their home in Belize. Along with these life-saving procedures, the Flowers were also pointed in the direction of the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House. Having a place of refuge beyond the walls of the hospital was crucial, essential not only to Khaylie’s continued care but also to maintaining the family’s sense of well being. It was here, at LARMH, that home-cooked meals replaced vending machine snacks while cozy rooms, not unlike those back home, took the place of hospital wards and sterile waiting rooms. It was here that every one of the Flowers clan received much-needed attention - from Club activities for Khaylie’s four-year old brother Khaylen to therapeutic support for Jessica and Larry, provided by an attentive and professionally trained staff. And it was here that there was relief - a sense of normalcy - even during their most difficult of times. But of the utmost importance, when the fight to save Khaylie’s life threatened to keep their family apart, the House brought them closer together. Children by their side, Khaylie’s parents found strength and confidence, without the worry of OUR MISSION mounting travel costs to cloud their focus.

To provide comfort, care, and support to While only time will tell of the obstacles that await this curious two-year old, children and families in one thing is for certain, Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House will be by her side, Southern California sharing peace and support no matter what might come.

LARMH

Unique in its premise, ‘Where Hope Lives” blends the insight into healing spaces cultivated by Family Support Services, the LARMH in-house psychology team, and the extensive skill set and limitless creativity of professional interior designers in an effort to develop interior environments that inspire hope and healing in the families that call the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House home. The collaboration re-kindles the longstanding relationship LARMH has had with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), California Los Angeles Chapter – a partnership that spans nearly three decades – and further emphasizes their confidence in Evidence Based Design. With an extensive tool-box of sensory design elements, the talented design teams will work with LARMH to revitalize 75 living spaces resulting in refreshed, healthy interior environments that alleviate stress, facilitate quality sleep, encourage relationships, and support meaningful interaction beyond the family unit.

A culmination of thirty years of construction, modification, expansion, and even an out-of-fashion fad or two, the original residence along Fountain Avenue will serve as a 3-dimensional canvas for the designers who’ve volunteered their significant efforts. Over the next year, each of the 75 individual living spaces including 19 efficiency apartments for the families of immune-suppressed patients, will undergo a much-needed update, bringing together up-to-date materials and technology as well as new insights in healing spaces for a highly detailed aesthetic and functional transformation. At the heart of the full-scale top-to-bottom re-do is the original Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House atrium, a significant feature in the original circa-1980 residence. It too will be subject to the imaginations of the talented design team with the goal of transforming this open area a central gathering space for the families that call LARMH home.

Since its inception in 1980, the ever-growing Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House continues to be a cornerstone in the Southern California medical community. What began as a simple house with 16 rooms just footsteps from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the third House to open its doors to the public is now heralded as one of the world’s largest Ronald McDonald Houses, providing temporary housing for as many as 75 families each night. Driven by the excelled innovation of Los Angeles’ wo rld-class hospitals in the treatment of specialty illnesses, LARMH has kept pace, expanding twice to support over 2,400 families annually while alleviating the travel-related financial woes that inherent in seeking specialty medical treatments far from home. While nearly three-quarters of the families in residence are low-income and represent the cultures of over 40 different countries, thanks in part to the 12,000 hours contributed each year by a largely volunteer driven staff, the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House continues to remain free of charge for the families of children undergoing specialty care for pediatric cancers, heart disease, and neonatal treatments. As one of the 349 Ronald McDonald House world-wide, LARMH is dedicated to #KeepingFamiliesClose, providing a Home Away From Home no matter how far away home might be. RYOYA’S

FRESHMAN YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL

O C C U R R E D M U C H L I K E T H AT O F H I S

H I S C L A S S M AT E S , T H AT I S , W I T H O N E R A R E E X C E P T I O N New school, new teachers, new subjects, new schedules. The over-abundance of new when making the transition from Middle School to High School can turn any teenager’s freshman year into an arduous battle - one proverbially fought uphill, in the snow, and barefoot. While graduation from the eighth to ninth grades was not unlike that of his peers - each day the presentation of new challenges - the journey for New Jersey teen Ryoya Edamatsu included an even greater hurdle. Diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, his unexpected ailment would be a struggle shared with not alone but with his tight-knit family.

They were all in this together. His parents, in their dedication to seeking out and providing the best and most successful treatments available, packed their belongings and headed west, exchanging New Jersey sunsets for California sunrises. At the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, Ryoya would be fighting perhaps the most important battle of his life. He would not, however be fighting it alone.

OUR VALUES Compassion, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Transparency.

It was important that the Edamatsu family remain together, to present a strong, unified front no matter what the teenager would face on the long road that stood before him. And it was the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House that would allow his family to do just that. To his parents as well as his two younger brothers and younger sister, LARMH and its well-regarded facilities were the perfect HQ from which to wage their inspired war while an extensive menu of services ensured that no family member left for battle without the necessary weapons. Although the family continues to fight daily for Ryoya’s health and mental wellness, they remain hopeful that peacetime is in the not so distant future. Until then, the Edamtsus have the familiar comfort of the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House at their side and plenty of soft tofu soup in their cup.
