Your guide to marketing and advertising with The Union, theunion.com and The Union products

www.THEUNION.com Great People Connecting Communities

Welcome EUREKA

Valued Customers: Our business is to help you grow your business. In a nutshell that’s what we are all about. And although our history dates back to 1864 (The Union was established to help Abraham Lincoln get re-elected president), we are much more than, “just a newspaper,” as some would suggest. We understand the need to target your advertising message very specifically in the age of information overload. To that end, we offer a suite of services, from Internet and digital tools to print to direct mail. And through our very robust database, we can provide information to help you identify your target market and opportunities in a very measurable and cost-effective way. The Union has been part of this great community almost since the beginning. We have a stake in sustaining the quality of life most of us moved here to enjoy. That quality, in our view, begins by ensuring a solid, diverse, economic foundation. We are a community of mostly small, mom-andpop type businesses and we know how difficult it can be in an ever-challenging and competitive landscape. We stand ready to serve you. Our success depends upon yours.

The Union earns 10 awards from National Newspaper Association in 2011 In 2011 The Union newspaper learned it won 10 awards from the National Newspaper Association in its 2011 Better Newspaper Contest. The newspaper won a General Excellence award, which was presented at NNA’s 125th annual Convention and Trade Show in Albuquerque, N.M. in Sept. of 2011. Staff Writer Liz Kellar earned first place in the Best Feature Story competition for her “Life on the Ridge” package, reporting on North San Juan and the San Juan Ridge, which judges deemed to be “far and away the strongest entry.” Another first place went to Staff Writer Kyle Magin, whose piece “Big boxes in Nevada County?” discussed how big box stores might fit in the community, took top honors in the Best Business Feature Story. TheUnion.com also took first place in Best Newspaper Web Site category. “This site was clean and easy to navigate and the staff is clearly trying to make the most of their platform,” judges wrote.

The Union earned first place in the Community Service Award contest, for its “Buck$$ for books” package, encouraging donations to Nevada County libraries, and for its “Paint the Town Pink” event that raises funds and awareness for the battle against breast cancer. Second place went to Kellar, Magin, Trina Kleist, Michelle Rindels and Greyson Howard in the Best Investigative or In-Depth Story or Series for their special report “Marijuana in Nevada County.” The Union tied for third place for Best Local News Coverage. Brian Hamilton took second place in Best Sports Feature Story for his coverage of the 50th annual Nevada City Classic bicycle race. The Union also took third place for Best Sports Section and Hamilton earned honorable mention for Best Sports Column for his piece on Bear River softball players Courtney Ceo and Katie Mathis. To read The Union’s award-winning entries, see this story at TheUnion. com online.

Established in 1885, the National Newspaper Association is the largest newspaper association in the country. The Union’s contest entries were judged in the Daily Division with other newspapers of 16,000 circulation and above. NNA reported receiving 2,042 entries in the Better Newspaper Contest. The awards are on the heels of honors won by The Union from the California Newspaper Publishers Association in April, including a second-place award for an informational graphic produced by Copy Editor Kim Midboe in advance of the Amgen Tour of California cycling race. The Union also received honorable mention from the CNPA in the Online Coverage category; in the Special Issue division, for its section in advance of the Amgen race; and in the Best Video competition. CNPA represents daily and weekly newspapers in California. The Union competed in the category of newspapers with between 10,000 and 25,000 subscribers.

Print Ad Submission Parameters Getting it to us All ads must be submitted within deadline via e-mail (preferred), flash drives, disc. Ads submitted late cannot be guaranteed. We do not have an ftp site, however, our e-mail is capable of handling files up to 30MB. Anything larger may be sent through an online host ftp site, such as YouSendIt.com. Ads may be sent directly to your sales representative or proof@theunion.com. Images All images should be at least 300dpi and submitted no smaller than print size. Images can be: jpgs, tifs and epses. (If you will be submitting a photo directly to us, the original photo file taken directly from the camera is best in a jpg format.) Line art (logos, etc.) Line art must be 300dpi and no smaller than intended

print size. Vector art is preferred and will print the best. It is best to use: eps, Illustrator files (no higher than CS2), and pdfs, are preferred. Jpgs and tifs are acceptable, but will not print as clear as a vector image. Building your ads We recommend you build your ads in InDesign or Illustrator in CMYK formats. Ads built using other software such as Publisher, Word, Excel, will result in less than optimal printing clarity. Black-and-white ads are acceptable from PhotoShop. Export ad files as pdfs at 300 dpi or higher quality and embed all fonts. Colors and text Blacks using more than 1 color, (i.e. rich black, 4-color black) will result in hard-to-read text. White, small, thin text placed on color backgrounds or 4-color blacks will be difficult to read when printed. We recommend white

text on colored backgrounds be no smaller than 12 pt, and/or bold font face. Avoid, if possible, using colors that require all four inks (cyan, magenta, yellow and black), such as burgundy. Note that colors and brightness on computer screens will not match when printed on newsprint. Because newsprint is light grey, colors will appear a shade or two darker. Photos print darker. Very rich, deep colors may print looking very black. Failure to comply to the above ad-building parameters may result in poor print quality, blurry images and hardto-read text. The Union is not responsible for files that do not meet the above specifications. Ads built camera ready should have all corrections made before submission. We are happy to build your ads for you or answer any questions on ad building. There is no charge for The Union to build your ad, up to one hour of design, additional services are available at $50 per hour.
