2014 | Prime 50+ Healthy Living Expo | 1
I’d known I was going to live this long, “I’dIfhave taken better care of myself.” T he good news is that most of us are living longer than we did even 10 or 15 years ago. Maybe it’s time to focus a little more on staying healthy and active — physically, mentally and financially. If you had to find a place for an aging parent to live, would you know where to start? If you needed information on the best exercise program for your age and fitness level, where would you go to find the answers? How do you talk to your aging parent about the difficult subjects? Whether you are over 50, or love someone who is, (or both!) you can find those answers and more at The Union’s Prime 50+ Healthy Living Expo on Saturday, June 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn
Adult Summer Classes
Community Wellness Classes At Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, the Wellness Center has cared for our community’s health with personal enrichment classes since 1998.

Express in Grass Valley. Here you’ll find experts in things like healthy eating and nutrition, stress reduction, computer skills, cooking for 1 or 2, finances, travel, exercise, senior residences, and so much more all gathered in one place. Over 30 experts will be on hand to share information with you, whether it’s for you personally or for a parent or other loved one. In addition to vendors sharing their expertise, we have scheduled informational breakout sessions inside the classrooms, plus live demonstrations on the patio. Live demonstrations include a fashion show by Cosmetique, chair yoga, Tai Chi, salsa dancing, manual muscle manipulation and exercise in disguise. Please see the full schedule of events on the facing page for more details. Like it or not, we’re all aging. While the median age in the state of California is 35 years old, here in Nevada County it’s 49. Armed with this statistic, The Union event planners used local market research and focus group results to discover what topics were of the most interest to those over 50. We took this information and invited vendors, speakers and presenters in as many relevant categories as possible to join us. We are pleased with the wide variety of topics we are able to cover at this First Annual Prime 50+ Healthy Living Expo, and hope you will be too. Here’s to a long, healthy, happy life!

Sessions schedule, Saturday, June 28 Classroom A
11:30am How to Talk to Your Parents/Falls Prevention Cynthia Schuetz, Coordinator Falls Prevention Coalition of Nevada County
Talking with our parents as they age about our concerns for their health and safety can be daunting. Old family “stuff” can interfere, our worries may not be theirs and the understandable desire to maintain their independence may get in the way of having an open, honest discussion. Using concerns about their safety, particularly around their risk of falling, as an example, we will look at why there is resistance to making changes and ways to help parents and adult children communicate.
12:30pm Healthy Cooking for 1 or 2
Roberta DesBouillons, Chef Tess’ Kitchen Store and Cooking School
If you’re used to cooking for a family, it can be difficult scaling down. Learn how to make Persian Yogurt Soup, with lots of fresh herbs and spices. You will receive the recipe to take home.
1:30pm Not for Sissies: Why Getting Older is a Radical Act
Molly Fisk, Author and Poet

olf Creek Lodge and its surroundings are designed to foster community living while offering us the opportunity for privacy when we want it. It’s a senior cohousing community where we have our own homes but also share extensive common space. There are 30 homes in a three-story condominium type of structure surrounding a large patio. Our homes are on one level with self-contained kitchen, living room, bedrooms and baths. The common space includes a large kitchen and dining room, where cook teams prepare meals for the members three or four times each week. We are expected to be on a cook team once a month. There is also a living room, laundry, three guest rooms and a multi-purpose room. The gardens are cared for by the landscaping team but enjoyed by all. There are over three acres of green space, with frontage on free-flowing Wolf Creek. We walk down steps to the trail along the creek. Down there, civilization seems miles away. We help each other as good neighbors. We provide rides to the airport or to medical appointments, take care of pets and plants during vacations, and resolve computer issues. When members are ill we help with meals, shopping, support and companionship. We believe our community life style in this planned neighborhood is good for both our physical and mental health. We expect to live longer, more active lives and remain independent for longer. Wolf Creek Lodge is at the corner of Freeman Lane and McKnight Way within a short walk of two shopping areas. Visit our website at www.wolfcreeklodge.org or call us at 1-800-558-3775. We currently have three homes available for sale. — Submitted by Wolf Creek Lodge

Presenting: Traveling to Cuba, 4 p.m. Classroom B Jim has worked as an R.N. for the past 40 years. He also worked in the travel industry during that time in Hawaii, San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. He worked as an ER and ICU nurse at various hospitals in Hawaii and California. He also was a supervisor and nurse educator. He began traveling to Cuba on medical missions in 1999. He functioned as the camp nurse at a remote research facility in eastern Cuba in August of 2005. One night he was in his tent on the beach and was listening to radio from Miami. He heard the newscaster say “things are mostly calm all around the Caribbean tonight, except for a small tropical depression out to the east. If it becomes a tropical storm, it will be called ‘Katrina.’” (It developed into a hurricane, passed north of where Jim was camped, and plowed right through Miami on its way to New Orleans.)
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
“Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
– Mark Twain
Jim continued to visit Cuba after that, participating on in various individual and group projects. He helped build four playgrounds in Havana. He has also taken medical donations to numerous clinics and schools. He has traveled the 700-mile long island from tip-to-tip. Jim became very familiar with the bizarre and contradicting rules that regulate legal travel by Americans. A few years ago he started taking his own groups to Cuba. His 10-day tours (also known as “research expeditions” to comply with U.S. government requirements) include six nights at a five-star hotel in Havana and three nights at a beach resort in an area made famous by Al Capone and the DuPont Family. Osteoporosis: What you should know about this disease
A
ccording to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, there are two million bone breaks a year due to osteoporosis. One year ago, 84-year-old Edith Goldman found out she would have to take pills to combat her declining bone density – but she also went dancing. To be precise, she signed up for a Zumba class and still takes it twice a week. Goldman said she was talked into the Zumba classes by several neighbors who were going. “It gets strenuous,” she said of the dance-based exercise program. “But everything has improved” since she started doing it. “I’m not the only one,” she declared. “Others in the class have improved bone strength, too.” Goldman recently learned that the pills and her dance exercise program are paying off. A follow up test confirmed that her bone strength has improved. “The message is that women at all ages can do something to improve bone health,” according to Janet Comontofski, patient services representative for the Radiation Department at Dignity Health Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. “But first they have to know that they have a problem.” “There are some alarming statistics,” she noted. “For example, 50 percent of women aged 50 and older never regain full function after bone fractures. A fourth of them wind up in nursing homes, and a fourth die as a result of a fracture.” The disease of osteoporosis weakens bones, and results in increasing loss of bone mass and strength, leading to fractures. Comontofski explained that most people’s bones reach their max6 | Prime 50+ Healthy Living Expo | 2014

Women over 50 are at increasing risk, partly because they generally have thinner bones than men, and because they live longer lives. Comontofski said people at high risk include: those who are thin and small of stature; post-menopausal women; people who do little or no exercise; smokers and drinkers; and those who have a
family history of osteoporosis. Men can also suffer from the disease, but women are four times as likely to develop it. “At Dignity Health Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital (SNMH), we want to help the women of this community learn about osteoporosis – who’s at risk, testing and treatments, and most importantly what we can do to help prevent this disease,” Comontofski said. Preventive measures include weight bearing and strengthening exercise, maintaining adequate calcium levels in your diet, and taking vitamin D. Things to avoid include lifestyle choices such as drinking, smoking, and cola drinks. Comontofski recommends that
adults consider taking a SNMH’s Wellness Center class to improve your health and the risks associated with osteoporosis, such as: Balance and Strengthening, Fall Prevention, or Smoking Cessation. For a schedule of SNMH’s wellness classes, call (530) 274-6124. Comontofski also recommends that women have a bone density test to understand your risk osteoporosis. A bone density testing requires a referral from your primary doctor. To schedule a bone density test at SNMH’s Radiation Department, call (530) 274-6262. Muscle Manipulation,
Dr. Matt Archer lives in Nevada City with his wife and two daughters, and has practiced here for 10 years. He is a chiropractor who focuses on diet, digestion, allergies and food sensitivities because he sees these issues to be the causes of pain, inflammation and most disease. He has developed a breakthrough in manual muscle testing which yields immediate objective feedback that is specific to an individual. While this method of testing has not been established as a means of diagnosis, the results are profound and creates lasting changes in the full spectrum of health issues in an average of three to six office visits. Dr. Archer gives public demonstrations and free 20-minute consultations at his office to answer questions and share this work. What becomes apparent is that most people have negative reactions (sensitivity or allergy) to one to four common foods and most people have compromised digestion which allows pathogens (yeast, bacteria, protozoa, etc.) to create chronic intestinal infection. Both of these conditions drive inflammation, poor absorption of vitamins and minerals, and specific muscle weaknesses in the body. Chronic intestinal infection allows undigested proteins to enter the blood and trigger allergic response and then these proteins accumulate in the liver. The work that we do clears pain, inflammation, allergies, poor digestion and the associated issues resolve. Come see how clear, simple, effective and affordable healthcare can be. A first hand demonstration illustrates the simple truth that there is nothing more powerful than direct feedback from your own body.
