elcome to Lake Tahoe and the official kick off to the 2011 Amgen Tour of California!

It’s Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race and we’re honored to be the Stage 1 Start, Finish and Stage 2 hosts. We’re also looking forward to showcasing all that Lake Tahoe has to offer from cycling and recreation (both on and off the water) to our scenic overlooks, pristine alpine lakes and diverse lodging options to match a variety of budgets.

Our local businesses and organizations are geared up and ready to host your visit as well as provide a memorable vacation.

The party starts early as the region is hosting Lake Tahoe’s 10-Day Countdown to the Tour, prior to the start of the race, May 5, which includes a Start at the Top – Lake Tahoe Legends Ride, Opening Gala and Official Team Introduction, Lake Tahoe Expo/Festival, live music, parties and 24-hour gaming – details at www.TahoeAmgenTourOfCalifornia.com. The official Amgen Tour of California Overall Start is, Sunday, May 15 and begins at South Lake Tahoe at 6,300 feet, the highest start elevation in the six-year history of the competition. Stage 1 wraps up in North Lake Tahoe at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort’s spectator-packed finish line along with the Amgen Tour of California Lifestyle Festival, with the Stage 2 Start taking place nearby at Squaw Valley USA on Monday, May 16 right under the Olympic Rings. Lake Tahoe is one of the country’s cycling meccas, well-known for both its paved courses, 72 miles of shoreline, and famed mountain biking trails - such as the Flume Trail and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. And, with plenty of bike shops located around the lake, renting is easy, along with booking guided rides to Tahoe’s secret spots. Once you get a taste for Tahoe biking, we’re sure you’ll be back to experience one of the many spectacular rides held in the basin, including America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride, Tour d’Tahoe and the Death Ride. And, in keeping with Lake Tahoe’s green initiatives, we ask that while you’re enjoying all the action, you take a moment to pack out your trash and keep Lake Tahoe the picturesque environment that it is. We’re looking forward to seeing you on the course and out soaking up Lake Tahoe’s events and activities prior to the race. The jump off point is www.VisitingLakeTahoe.com for all of your Lake Tahoe adventures. Pedal on,

official 2011 jerseys

amgen g tour of california 2011 Amgen Race Leader Jersey The Amgen Race Leader Jersey is awarded to the rider with the least amount of elapsed time over the entire race. Depending on each day’s results, the rider wearing the Leader Jersey can change from stage to stage. Because the overall winner is based on lowest cumulative time, it is possible for a rider to win the Amgen Race Leader Jersey without winning a daily stage.

2011 Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer® Most Courageous Jersey Each day, the most courageous rider will earn Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer Jersey. It will be awarded to a cyclist who best exemplifies the character of those engaged in the fight against cancer – courage, sacrifice, inspiration, determination and perseverance.

A long-standing tradition for professional cycling races, the special race jerseys will be awarded daily to overall race leaders in several categories. The 2011 race, which will cover nearly 800 miles of scenic California roadways and highways from May 15 – 22, will feature many of the world’s elite cyclists vying for these ‘leader’ jerseys. For the third year in a row, Hincapie Sportwear has been named the official jersey supplier for the Amgen Tour of California and will produce each of the specially designed jerseys awarded to riders who excel in each stage classification. “The race jerseys are an important part of the Amgen Tour of California as they signify the very best riders in specific categories each day,” said Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports. “With such a talanted field of world-class cyclists, being awarded with an Amgen Tour of California race leader jersey is an honor and something the ridres strive for each day.”

2011 California Travel & Tourism Commission King of the Mountain Jersey This year’s race starts in the magnificent Sierra and winds down the state to the peaks of Mt Baldy. As a reflection of California’s majestic mountains, this jersey goes to the peloton’s strongest climber. A cyclist earns this jersey by collecting points at designated King of the Mountain (KOM) locations located at the tops of mountains and hills. Only the first three cyclists to reach the top on rated climbs receive points toward this award..

2011 Herbalife Sprint Jersey The Sprint Jersey is awarded to the rider who accumulates the most bonus points, which are given based on Sprint Line performances as well as finishing the stage in the top-15 places. Cyclists who specialize in bursts of power and speed, or consistently finish near the top of each stage, will have the best chance to wear this respected green jersey.

2011 Rabobank Best Young Rider Jersey Each day, all riders who are under 23 years old compete for this special recognition. The jersey will be awarded to the young rider with the least amount of elapsed time over the entire race.

Abandon: When a rider quits during a race. Attack: A sudden acceleration to move ahead of another rider or group of riders. Big Ringing It: A “big” gear – when the rider has his chain on the larger of the two front chainrings – allows a rider to go for maximum speeds: This gearing is most often used on flat or rolling terrain. Bonk: Total exhaustion caused by lack of sufficient food during a long race or ride. Bonus Sprints: On each stage, race organizers designate several locations along the route where bonus points are given to the .first three riders that cross the line: These sprints create a “race within a race” during each stage. Breakaway: One or more riders who sprint away from the peloton in an effort to build a lead: Competing riders in a breakaway will often form uneasy alliances, working together and drafting to increase or maintain their lead: Those alliances break down, though, as they approach the finish: A team leader in a breakaway with multiple teammates has a decided advantage over a rider who has no support. Bridge: A rider or riders who sprint away from the main group of riders, or peloton, and catch the breakaway. Broom Wagon: The vehicle that follows the race, picking up racers who have to abandon the race. Caravan/Race Caravan: The official and team support vehicles in a race: Each team has a car in the official race caravan: The team cars follow the peloton and riders will often go back to their team car for food, extra clothing, or to speak to their team director.

Circuit Race: A multiple-lap race around a course of 2 miles or more: Circuit races are great crowd pleasers: In the 2008 Amgen Tour of California, the final portion of stage 7 (and the entire tour) is a circuit race: If you’re in or near Pasadena, CA on the 24th, don’t miss it! Clincher: A traditional bicycle tire that is mounted on a rim with a wire or kevlar bead: Clinchers are easy to replace or repair, but they and their rims tend to weigh more than a tubular. Col: A mountain pass or climb, such as ‘Col du Telegraph’. Criterium: A multi-lap, one-day race on a closed, short course, typically one mile or less. Derailleur: A mechanism for moving the chain from one sprocket to another to change gears on a multispeed bicycle. Disc Wheel: A bicycle wheel with covers or a solid disc, rather than open spokes: Disc wheels are very aerodynamic, but heavy, and can turn into a sail in a strong crosswind. DNF: Short for “Did Not Finish.” Domestique: A rider whose main job is to help the team leader win the day’s stage, or the entire race: A domestique may pull the leader up to a breakaway, or pace them up a steep climb: If a team leader gets a flat, a domestique may even be called upon to give up their front or rear wheel and wait for the team mechanic, saving the leader precious seconds. Drafting: One or more riders ride single file behind another rider, taking advantage of that rider’s slipstream: By doing so the rider behind has less of a headwind and gets a breather: In a crosswind, riders may ride in a diagonal line, instead: Drafting is the

lynchpin of most bicycle racing tactics: See also paceline. Drop/Dropped: When a rider has been left behind by another rider or group of riders. Echappee: The cyclist who escapes from the pack: The ‘escapee’. Echelon: A staggered, long line of riders, each downwind of the rider ahead, allowing them to move considerably faster than a solo rider or small group of riders: In windy sections where there are crosswinds, a large peloton will form into echelons. Equipe: A cycling team. Feed Zone: A designated area along the route where riders can grab “musette bags” filled with food and drinks as they ride by: There is an unwritten rule in the peloton that riders should not attack the .field while the riders are going through the feed zone. Field Sprint: A mass sprint at the finish among the main group of riders in a road race. Gap: The amount of time or distance between a rider or group of riders and another rider or group of riders. General Classification (G.C.): The overall leader board in the race, representing each rider’s total cumulative time in the race: The rider with the lowest time is number one on the G.C. Grand Tour: Refers to threeweek major cycling stage races: Tour de France, Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy) and Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain.) Gruppetto: A group of riders that forms at the back of the .eld on mountain stages and ride at a pace that allows them to finish just inside the time limit: (see Time Cut.) Usually the gruppetto is comprised of sprinters

amgen g tour of california or riders cannot keep pace with the main group and lag behind. Off the Front: When a rider takes part in a breakaway. Paceline: A formation of two or more riders who are drafting: Typically, racers take turns doing the hard work at the front of the line. Peloton: The main group of racers: With its dozens of colorful jerseys, maneuvering for position and breakneck speeds, the peloton can be quite a sight: Also called the pack. Point to Point Road Race: A one-day race in which the route travels between two separate points: The most prestigious of these races are known as “Classics.” Popped: Blown; Had it; Knackered; Stuffed; Words used to describe the legs losing all power. Prologue: One type of beginning for a stage race, which is a relatively short time trial. Puncture: Flat tire. Road Rash: Skin abrasions resulting from a fall or crash onto the road. Saddle: The bike seat. Schwag: The free stuff competitors get when they race: May include water bottles, jerseys, food, or more expensive toys. Slipstream: The area of least wind resistance behind a rider. Sprint: A quick scramble for the finish line or a mid-race king of the mountain or other competition: A professional road race sprint is fast, furious and tactical: Watch for riders to jockey for the second or third spot, or organize leadouts by their teammates. Squirrel: A small rodent, but also a rider who is erratic and ‘squirrely’ when riding in a group. Stage Race: A race comprised of multiple one-day races, or stages: The Tour of California

is a stage race. Team Leader: The rider for whom the team supports in order for the leader to win a stage or race. Technical: A descent or other portion of a race that is twisty, steep or otherwise challenging from the point of view of bike handling. Time Cut: Mostly applicable to the Grand Tours: On each stage all riders must finish within a certain percentage of the winner’s time to remain in the race: Those who are unable to make the cut are disqualified from the race. Time Trial: Often called the Race of Truth, a time trial pits a rider or a team against the clock: Individual time trials are grueling affairs, with each rider expending maximum effort. Train: A fast moving paceline of riders. Tubular: A high-performance racing tire with the inner tube sewn inside the tire: The tire is then glued to a low-profile rim: Tubulars offer weight and strength advantages, but are hard to fix and maintain: Plus a bad gluing job can mean a tire failure in a sharp turn, and an ugly crash: Also called sew-ups. UCI: Union Cycliste Internationale, the international governing body of cycling. USA Cycling: America’s governing body of cycling: USA Cycling supervises the activities of all cycling disciplines (road, mountain, track, cyclo-cross), and establishes criteria for the U.S: Olympic Cycling Team. Velo: French for “bicycle.” Wheelsucker: A somewhat dated term for someone who, while riding in a paceline, doesn’t take a turn at the front of the line: These days they get called lots of other names: None are printable here.

and other riders who are not climbing specialists or race leaders: Gruppetto is Italian for “a small group.” Hammer: To ride hard: Also, to “put the hammer down.” Jump: A quick acceleration, which usually develops into a sprint. King of the Mountains: The KOM is the fastest climber in the overall standings: King of the Mountain is awarded to the racer who is awarded points based on the many KOM sprints in the Tour: Look for the KOM jersey in the race. Lacher: Drop out or let go. Lead Out: A racer’s teammate(s) form a paceline in front of the leader, pulling hard for the finish: The supporting cast pulls off one at a time, leaving the leader rested and fast for the last sprint: Leadouts typically happen right before the finish line or sprint. Mechanical: Slang for a problem with the bicycle: “He had a mechanical.” Mountain Climb Classifications: Large mountain climbs are normally classified according to their difficulty: Category 4 is the easiest, followed by Categories 3, 2, 1, and the Hors-Categorie (which is the hardest): Mountain climbs are classified according to their length and the average gradient of the road’s incline. Neutral Section: The first few miles of road race courses are generally controlled in a “neutral section”: In this section the race is controlled by the commissaires with no attacks allowed and the pace is generally moderate: It allows the riders a short period of warmup under controlled conditions and is used by the organizers to “parade” the race in a start city and organize the race caravan without worry of active racing: The section ends at the “0K” point with a rolling start. Off the Back: When a rider

The 2011 Amgen Tour of California will mark Team Sky’s first participation in the race, yet the British ProTeam will head into it as de facto defending champions. Michael Rogers’s victory for his erstwhile team HTC‑Columbia broke Levi Leipheimer’s three-year stranglehold on the yellow jersey, at the same time becoming the first non-American to claim the title. Unsurprisingly then, the Australian is set to lead Sky’s charge in California. He’s never finished outside the top-10 in California in his three previous visits to the race. That experience will ensure he’s conferred with the team captaincy, while his admission last year that he would dedicate the remaining years of his career to week-long stage races should send a clear signal to his rivals.

Team Garmin-Cervélo

What started out as a post-retirement development project by manager Jonathan Vaughters has grown into one of the most powerful teams in the pro peloton. The team earned their first grand tour stage win with a team time trial victory in the 2008 Giro d’Italia, putting American Christian Vande Velde in the famed pink leader’s jersey. Their success has increased since then. The team, which raced the first Amgen Tour of California as TIAA-CREF, has become a perennial contender in the Amgen Tour of California, as well as a key animator on the road. They’ve been on the final podium in all but one edition, with David Zabriskie coming second in 2009 and 2010 and David Millar and Christian Vande Velde second and third respectively in 2008. They also won the team classification in 2008 and 2010. Team Garmin-Cervélo is owned and managed by Slipstream Sports, LLC, a sports management company.

HTC-Highroad may be based in the USA under the watchful eye of manager and Californian Bob Stapleton but they’re a truly international team, with riders of 15 different nationalities. They’re also the most successful team in the peloton, with more than 400 wins since 2008. The team will come to the Amgen Tour of California for the sixth year in a row with fresh, new faces but the same depth of talent as always. HTC-Highroad has a history of success at the Amgen Tour of California, having taken a stage win in 2008 thanks to George Hincapie, two by sprinter Mark Cavendish in 2009 and the overall title last year. Michael Rogers, third overall in 2009, won the 2010 edition in a thrilling race decided by nine slim seconds. The team also took home two stage wins: the first by Cavendish and the second by Germany’s Tony Martin, who blitzed the time trial in Los Angeles. HTC-Highroad’s roster of 37 men and women includes 21 talented young athletes aged 26 and under, making it the youngest team at the top level of professional cycling. The team’s athletes come from 19 different countries and hold 10 national champion titles and six current or former world champion titles. In 2010, HTC-Highroad men and women won 108 races by 24 different riders.

Team RadioShack, run by the sport’s most successful team director, Johan Bruyneel, have been one of the world’s top teams throughout their history, and their eight Tour de France victories are only part of the story. In their previous incarnations as Astana and Discovery Channel, they’ve been victorious in three of the past five editions of the Amgen Tour of California thanks to Levi Leipheimer. The Santa Rosa resident earned each of those wins courtesy of his domination of the Solvang time trial, which returns to the Amgen Tour after a one-year hiatus on Stage 6. The American will also look to the Stage 4 finish atop the Sierra Road climb and the queen stage to Mt Baldy to showcase his climbing talents and gain valuable time toward a fourth Amgen Tour of California title. The team also boasts one of the top young American talents in Ben King, 22, who has made a habit of superhuman feats such as the 90km solo breakaway that earned him the US pro road race title last September.

www.teamliquigascannondale.com Peter sagan (SLO) Two grand tour wins in 2010 would be evidence enough of Liquigas-Cannondale’s pedigree, but it was Peter Sagan’s prodigious performance at last year’s Amgen Tour of California that made the team’s inclusion in the 2011 edition all but a foregone conclusion. The Slovakian star’s impressive haul included a pair of consecutive stage wins – stages 5 and 6 – as well as both the youth and sprint classifications on his way to eighth overall. The team promptly re‑signed Sagan, as well as signing a number of other younger riders, including Americans Ted King and Timothy Duggan. The team’s forward-thinking rider selections would have pleased Cannondale, who upped their involvement in the team for this year, a fact that should see both King and Duggan on display in California. Many of the team’s Italian riders will be occupied with their quest to install Vuelta a España champion Vincenzo Nibali as winner of this year’s Giro d’Italia, so Sagan is again likely to be given free reign.

Saxo Bank-SunGard is normally one of the most feted teams at the Amgen Tour of California and remains the only European squad to be asked to race every edition held so far. Juan José Haedo has been one of their most prolific riders in California since he signed with the team in 2007, repaying the faith shown by the then-CSC squad with two quick-fire stage victories.

Leopard Trek Sponsor: Trek Bicycle Corporation Team Management: . Brian Nygaard . Kim Andersen . Lars Michaelsen . Adriano Baffi . Luca Guercilena . Torsten Schmidt . Markus Zingen Equipment: Trek Bicycles

www.leopardtrek.lu andy schleck (LUX) Based in Luxembourg, the idea of building a team around two of the biggest cycling stars in the world who happen to be brothers from Luxembourg Andy and Frank Schleck - played an instrumental role in the initial impetus behind the founding of the team. But as the project progressed, it became not just the proud goal of one nation but rather more about putting together a group of riders who could be counted on to be among the best in every race of the season for many seasons to come. The idea was to create a new platform for cycling with a longevity and a feel that would both compliment tradition and show the way into a fantastic future for the sport. Youth has been emphasized; hardly any of the team’s riders are over the age of 30. But that doesn’t mean that experience has been neglected. With 13 countries represented in the line-up, this international squad will be able to garner attention in just about every region of the world. The founder of the team is the Luxembourgish sports fan and business man Flavio Becca. He hired Brian Nygaard and then the extremely experienced Team Manager Kim Andersen; he also secured the financial future of the team. With Becca’s influence, Nygaard and Kim Andersen’s ambitions and the increasingly strong lineup of riders the organization attracted, more and more companies signed up to join the project. Now their sponsor lineup is as impressive and professional as the rider lineup.

BMC Racing Team

The BMC Racing Team has grown from the domestic American squad that first raced the Amgen Tour of California in 2007 to a fullblown international success story. For 2010 they recruited a wealth of talent as they rose to the Professional Continental ranks before climbing into the top tier this season as a UCI ProTeam.

The team recorded a number of key successes in 2010, with 2009 world champion Cadel Evans spending a day in the leader’s jersey at both the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, as well as claiming a victory at Belgian one-day Classic Fléche Wallonne. The BMC Racing Team has kept the Amgen Tour of California as one of their core races. While they haven’t yet tasted overall success here, they’ve consistently been one of the race’s main animators. Scott Nydam claimed the mountains classification in the 2008 edition, while former US champion George Hincapie took the Most Courageous Rider jersey in 2010. The BMC Racing Team is a United Statesregistered UCI ProTeam headquartered in Santa Rosa, Calif., and title sponsored by Switzerland-based bicycle manufacturer, BMC.

www.teamnetapp.com michael baer (sui) Team NetApp entered the peloton last year as a Continental squad, complete with the declaration that the team would walk a steady path to ProTeam status by 2012. Twelve months on the now-Pro Continental outfit are left as the sole German squad in the top two tiers of cycling. Pulling off one or two more stage wins in California would certainly boost Team NetApp’s proposed ProTeam license application later this year. If successful, this would further their grand tour ambitions. Under the direction of Team Manager Ralph Denk and Sports Directors Jens Heppner and Enrico Poitschke exists a team with just one ambitious goal: to reach the ProTour in three years. Team Manager Ralph Denk has put together a good mix of young, talented and experienced cyclists from all over Europe, thus allowing the athletes to benefit from each other’s strengths and experiences. For this team, a combination of routine, enthusiasm and passion is the key to success. Additionally, with its combination of fast sprinters, tough climbers and leading allrounders, Team NetApp is optimally equipped for any race. Team NetApp is not just along for the ride, it wants to stir things up!

Bissell Pro Cycling

Bissell Pro Cycling are one of the most consistently well placed teams in US domestic racing, having won the best overall team classification during several stage races on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC) last season. In 2011, the UCI-registered Continental outfit will again focus on the domestic scene with an aim to achieve prominent results wherever they can. However, their most important goal is to animate every event they enter, including, of course, the Amgen Tour of California. The team is based in California and is run by Santa Rosa resident Glen Mitchell. They’ve been a staple in the previous five editions of the Amgen Tour of California. History has shown this team as outside contenders for the time trial stage. In past years, their riders have posted podium performances on this key stage. This year, the team hopes to once again make an impact in the Stage 6 time trial in Solvang with a few specialists. The team will be set on making things as tough as possible for their higher-caliber rivals. Bissell’s riders will start every stage on a mission to create a winning breakaway. The team is confident in their ability to contest the King of the Mountains jersey, while their sprinters are contenders for the sprinter’s jersey.

Two great dining choices. One great place. Timber House offers an extensive and varied menu which includes many favorite traditional American dishes along with creative and unique daily specials.

Latin Soul dishes artistically combine fresh ingredients from Mexico, Central and South America and The Caribbean to create a fusion of distinctive flavors.

Just .7 miles from the state line, but a world away in attitude. (775) 588-7777 or (800) 624-7980 LakesideInn.com
