We would like to thank Steve Rosenthal of Tess’ Kitchen Store for sponsoring our lovely Chocolate Infusion wine glasses. Please feel free to take yours home with you.
Welcome Welcome to The Union’s Chocolate Infusion! It’s an afternoon of chocolate, wine and jazz at the Miners Foundry, and it’s sure to take the chill off of a wintery Nevada City day. We have local and regional chocolatiers who will let you sample their decadent treats. Whether you prefer white, milk or dark chocolate, you will find lots of delicious offerings at Chocolate Infusion. You can sample sinfully delicious truffles, 12 different kinds of teaflavored chocolates (marsala chai and jasmine are my two personal favorites), toffee, biscotti, artisan chocolates, cake pops and cupcakes, and so much more. Since Valentine’s Day is only a few weeks away, you may want to do a little shopping while you’re here. The complete list of vendors is inside this publication.
Tickets still available until 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at www.theunion. com/chocolate (530) 477-4241 or buy them at the door $25.
If you want to learn to cook something chocolate (or anything else), check out the cooking school schedule at Tess’ at www.tesskitchenstore.com.
Chocolate has been known to affect mood in many ways. It contains 380 known chemicals, triggering a host of responses in the brain. Chocolate can trigger the production of opioids, which are chemicals that produce a feeling of well-being (euphoria). Eating chocolate then may make a person feel better, which is why chocolate is often a turn-to comfort snack.
who else is going to be at the show
However, the reason chocolate may be snatched up come Valentine’s Day is that chocolate appears to contain phenylalanine, the same chemical that is produced by the brain when people fall in love. Doctors think that eating chocolate creates a temporary “love high.”

For your musical entertainment, Ludi Hinrichs will be playing the beautiful Estonia grand piano on the stage in the Osborn/Woods Hall. You can read more about Ludi below. Chocolate Infusion. Come enjoy an afternoon you won’t soon forget. Mary Anne Davis Event and Sponsorship Manager The Union
For those gifting chocolate for Valentine’s Day, consider dark chocolate, which is also high in antioxidants. This chocolate is among the healthier varieties in which to indulge.
Art
Ludi Hinrichs: pianist, vocalist, trombonist, composer and teacher has been connected to the Nevada County music scene since arriving in 1979. He has also produced three live recorded CDs of his own — “Music of My Life,” “Quintet Live” and “Kairos/Kronos.”
Nevada City-based contemporary landscape painter LeeAnn Brook will be featured at the Chocolate Infusion event. Her newest painting of Hirschman’s Pond will be unveiled and if it is sold at the event, she will be donating 50 percent of the proceeds to the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce.
“I’m excited about performing for the Chocolate Infusion. I’ll have a chance to stretch out on the beautiful Estonia grand piano, playing some jazz classics and smooth originals. Jazz is a refined art, just like the tradition of creating chocolates and fine wine,” Hinrichs said. A recipient of the Nevada City Chamber’s 2004 Live Music Award, Hinrichs continues to teach, record, perform, and compose from his home on the San Juan Ridge in the Sierras.
The average American eats 11 pounds of chocolate every year, a significant percentage of which is enjoyed around Valentine’s Day. The reason people are known to enjoy and crave chocolate may be connected to its chemical components.
Chocolate can also increase blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, attributing to feelings of alertness. The caffeine in chocolate Open to see also acts as a stimulant.
Wine. What would a day of tasting chocolate be without some wine tasting to accompany it? Six of our local wineries will be pouring their best wines for you at Chocolate Infusion. Should you want something a little different, the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce will present a no-host Chocolate Martini bar; Victoria’s Sweet Elegance is presenting a gourmet hot chocolate bar, with 18 different flavors available for purchase; and tea and coffee will be available for tasting (and for sale) at the BriarPatch booth.
Entertainment
Valentine’s Day and chocolate have been linked for some time now, but there really hasn’t been any definitive explanation for just why the delicious confection and the day of love seem to go hand in hand.
The 60-inch-by-72-inch painting will be displayed above the granite hearth in the Stone Hall where Brook will be available to greet patrons. More of her work can be seen at www.leeannbrookfineart.com. Ludi Hinrichs
“Ludi is three musicians in one,” poet Gary Snyder said. The Union is pleased to have such a fine musician for their first Chocolate Infusion event. For more information on Ludi Hinrichs visit www.ludihinrichs.com.
