brisket burger– nobody else in town has them,” said Lockhart. “They’re USDA choice Black Angus beef brisket burgers, and they are
absolutely amazing. I’ve had four people tell me it’s the best burger they’ve ever had. I think they’re going to be one of our big niches.” Other hearty, made-from-scratch burgers and sandwiches, including a steak sandwich and grilled chicken burger, will accompany the new barbecue masterpiece. But, don’t be swayed by the addition of savory meats and sauces, as Lockhart creates fresh dishes for all palates, and offers a vast array of fresh, farm-to-table organic and vegetarian food options including the “Locals Only”

Two small ottomans or side tables could be fun at the foot of a bed. 4. Go with the flow. Don’t think you need to complete one room before moving onto the next. Let one thing lead to another. Don’t inhibit the process by making up rules about how the project needs to be accomplished. 5. Always think of the bathroom and the utility room. These

Perhaps the sofa would look better where the chair used to be. If the chair doesn’t look right in the guest bedroom but you like the living room without it, put it somewhere out of the way until you find its spot. t’s tricky to make a design scheme work when you have a house full of furniture of various pedigrees. But if you’re like most people, that’s exactly what you have. Grandma’s coffee table, a Craigslist sofa, a chair you bought on impulse at a garage sale. And now all these pieces sit in your home, waiting to be made into a team. Where to start? 1. Look at everything you own with fresh eyes. This can be difficult—kind of like proofreading your own work—but really look at that chair sitting next to the sofa. Now describe it by style, color and feel. You might say, “Traditional, blue, formal.” Keep the description in mind as you go through your house looking for other pieces that seem like they would play on the same team. 2. Be willing to move furniture from one room to another. Often. Would that traditional, blue formal chair work better in the guest bedroom? Pick it up and move it there. If it feels right in the bedroom, don’t feel pressured to situate it yet. Something might need to be moved, or removed

Decorating with Oriental rugs Submitted by Carolien van Straten, The Magic Carpet

or more than two thousand years, people have adorned their dwellings, from nomadic tents to royal palaces, with beautiful, durable rugs. Today, these wonderful works of art under foot continue to bring harmony and comfort to our homes. But choosing the right rugs can be an overwhelming task with so much variety in quality, construction and design. Luckily, a basic understanding of what gives value to rugs, and how to select them, is easy to obtain. The Magic Carpet is happy to provide this type of education and help with your decorating decisions. Let’s go on a brief house tour for some modern-day rug decorating tips.

Rugs from The Magic Carpet decorate a living room.
Your entryway might see lots of traffic, so a rug that’s very durable would be perfect. The beauty of a good hand-knotted rug is that, with proper washing, virtually all dirt and stains will come out and the rug
will shine for years. With all rugs, for safety and longevity, we highly encourage using non-slip pads. Your living room rug is one of the main statements of the house. Start by measuring your space,
considering the maximum and minimum possibilities for both dimensions. Decide if furniture will be on or beside rugs, take into account air vents and if possible, leave some space from walls. Pianists may enjoy a
rug under their piano, both to accentuate their instrument and to soften the sound. Further focal points in a home are the dining room and kitchen, and Oriental rugs add a warm and homey element. Under the dining table, your rug should be large enough for legs of chairs to remain on the rug when in use, making it easy to move chairs, while protecting your floors. Remember to rotate rugs at least once a year so sun and traffic are more evenly distributed. This applies to any rug in your home. We recommend treating windows that get lots of sun with clear UV window protection. Hallways usually have less light so you might consider a lighter rug

there. Transform your bedroom into a sanctuary by adding a beautiful Oriental rug! Stepping out of bed onto its wooly texture is a sensual treat and its color can tie together your linens, curtains and other furniture. You will love rugs in your bathroom for their warmth and contrast. If moist, just hang them up so they get a chance to dry out. Many people put rugs on their staircases to soften the sound of steps. Special attention is required for measuring and installation. We have the expertise to guide you and get you the proper hardware. Considering that an Oriental rug is a continued on page 8

Perhaps you like your dining room table but consider replacing the dining room chairs, be creative and do four wooden chairs and two end chairs in fabric. If you have a view you enjoy, opt for a blind that stacks tight and use a lovely fabric treatment that won’t compete with your view. No view? There are many types of blinds that will allow light in but give you privacy. There are a variety of fabric patterns to choose from and just the right window treatment will compliment the look you are going for. A light fixture is no longer just a source of light but a decorative feature; I love the clever light fixtures available now. Art especial-
ly is so personal. If you have a print hanging that you really don’t like, replace it with one that you love. Write up a priority list; decide what it is you want to change the most. It really is not as hard as you may think. Start with discovering what look you like from HGTV or magazines and begin to move toward that in your home. One room at a time can be more manageable. When you walk in the door at the end of the day and sit back and relax, wouldn’t it be nice to like what you see? o your walls need freshening up?Painting is an inexpensive way to make a difference! Choose colors that make you feel good and compliment your surroundings; current trends are grays for all over color and reds for accent walls. Try the wall behind your bed or an alcove or accentuate an architectural feature – painting will warm or cool the atmosphere. Artwork, family pictures, etc., will look richer on a colored wall as opposed to a white or offwhite wall. Take a look at your flooring, cabinets, counters, walls, tile, etc. Are these surfaces looking weathered, outdated and worn? An eco-friendly bam-
boo or cork floor will give you a beautiful overall look. If you prefer tile, use very large tiles or try concrete – it will expand your room. There are a lot of options for counters such as stainless steel, glass, and wood butcher block– finding the material that works best for you is key. For tile accents in your kitchen or bathroom, opt for a beautiful mosaic glass tile or recycled glass, there are many beautiful options available and it’s a great way to add a wow factor! If your budget allows, updating your cabinets will make a huge impact, you can also paint cabinets and add new hardware for a budget-friendly alternative.

LeGacy Productions celebrates 50 years of the British musical invasion by LeGacy Produtions
“There were millions of kids at the airport, which nobody had expected. We heard about it in mid-air. There were journalists on the plane, and the pilot had rang ahead and said, ‘Tell the boys there’s a big crowd waiting for them.’ We thought, Wow! God, we have really made it.” – Paul McCartney’s recollection of Feb. 7, 1964
F
rom the pandemonium that began at Heathrow that morning, the frenzy at New York’s JFK airport had never been seen before. The British Invasion had truly begun, and the Beatles were definitely the head of the surge. The youth of America was ready and waiting. The music that would come with their arrival was infectious, soul-searching, plain down right good. Who would have ever thought the Beatles would be just the beginning? Perhaps the biggest beginning, but so many would follow. Immediately, the Dave Clark Five, The Kinks, The Animals, Manfred Mann, Petula Clark, Herman’s Hermits, The Rolling Stones, The Troggs, Donovan, Dusty Springfield and many others pounced on America. The hits were immediate, multiple, and continue to this day. Liverpool has long been hailed as the birthplace of the Beatles, and to those that paid attention, the Cavern Club the physical womb. A

PIANO MEN:
A Tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel fruit and vegetable cellar turned air-raid shelter, turned jazz club, the humble beginnings of the Cavern Club seemed an unlikely place to foster the biggest pop/ rock group of all time. However, almost three hundred shows in the course of three years, mostly during the lunch hour, gave the world the polished, playful sound of the Fab Four. Crossing “the pond” in 1964, the British sound was here to stay! LeGacy Productions recreates the surroundings of the Cavern Club for their current show at the Nevada Theatre, “From the Cavern and On.” Live renderings of more than thirty British artists make for this musical creation, which follows and celebrates 50 years of the British musical invasion. With a playful script written by Diane Dean-
Epps, “From the Cavern and On” offers over forty songs, all skillfully performed by LeGacy veterans Dave Halford (guitar and vocals), Gary Epps (keys, guitar and vocals) and John Basa on drums. Newcomer and British born Steve Sheppard on bass and vocals round out the band. LeGacy cofounder and producer Sue LeGate Halford, along with Dean-Epps, narrate, dance and sing their way through five decades of British rock and roll. “From the Cavern and On” plays at the Nevada Theatre through June 21. Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12 is a benefit for Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Nevada County. Tickets $18 in advance, $20 at the door, available at The Bookseller, Harmony Books, online at legacypresents.com or call 530-268 5419.
