t is a pleasure for me to extend personally, as well as on behalf of the City Council, a cordial welcome to the City of Grass Valley. We believe Grass Valley to be one of the finest cities in the state. Incorporated in 1860 and located in the heart of the gold country, Grass Valley holds the richest history of the gold rush. We are home to the renowned Empire and North Star mines, two of the richest mines in California’s history. Our perfectly preserved downtown includes the historic Holbrooke Hotel, wine tasting rooms, art galleries, world-class restaurants, and entertainment from around the world. Grass Valley is perfectly situated within the heart of Northern California’s outdoor activities. This lends well to the active outdoor lifestyles of our residents. If you can climb, ski, paddle, hike, fish, hunt, or simply enjoy nature, access is right outside of our backdoor. City of Grass Valley has been labeled the economic hub of Western Nevada County. Grass Valley and all of western Nevada County is replete with natural beauty, history, and small town charm. While the residents may not agree on who serves the best mocha or produces the best wine, one thing remains undisputed: We are passionate about our community and dedicated to supporting all things local. The character of our community was built by local businesses and their owners, and that remains true today. Those businesses and non-profit orgnizations are the very backbone of our community and contribute to the quality of life in western Nevada County. Along with unique retails shops and services, we enjoy a vibrant performing arts community that provides us with world class entertainment. We are fortunate enough to have citizens and environmental organizations that are dedicated custodians of the land, water and air. At the Grass Valley Visitors Center we greet thousands of guests each year. As always, we are curious about what brings them through our door. Repeatedly, the response is that they’re visiting, have become enchanted with the 6

community and have come in to explore the possibility of relocating. Dear Judy, The Empire Mine was the perfect setting for Justin & Sierra’s wedding! The ceremony was in front of the Bourne Mansion and it was beautiful . After the ceremony we strolled the grounds and you know how much I love roses—well there’s a vintage rose garden that dates from 1897—Be still my heart! Brian and I were amazed at the history and beauty! Gloria says that the Empire was the richest hardrock gold mine in California, and we’re coming back with them for the living history tours at the Mineyard and the “Cottage!” Did you show Bob my Facebook page? We’re having a relaxing morning—nice to unwind after the festivities! Dave thought that we should become acquaitned with Grass Valley and couldn’t wait to show us this really fantastic video about the area called BaseCamp!

Brian and I watched it 6 times—it gave us a great preview of what there is to do and see. The guys are out cranking up the BBQ and I know they’re plotting to go white water rafting tomorrow! It’s a little too wet and wild for us girls, so Gloria says if they’re going to act like crazy kids we’ll go explore Grass Valley—she says it’s just wonderful—so many unique shops and restaurants! A Leap of Faith By Valerie Costa

“You need to move to Grass Valley,” my friend Kris said to me eight years ago. Her daughter had just moved here for a job and as soon as Kris visited her here she knew that this should be my home. As a very involved member of my small river community located in the Sequoia National Forest, I was skeptical. I owned a home, had a good career along with a freelance writing gig at the local newspaper, was a very active volunteer, and had many friends who I saw regularly and still love like family. “You don’t understand,” she said to me every time she visited this area, “You belong there!” Five years after she started haranguing me about the issue, I finally decided to take a weekend to visit Grass Valley…and fell in love. I went back and gave my boss a year’s notice (I had helped to shape a nonprofit

organization, Sequoia ForestKeeper, and remain on the Board to this day), and started my journey of moving to Grass Valley, CA, which I am certain will be my forever home. What so enchanted me on that first visit? In a word: everything. I arrived on a Thursday so that I could check out the downtown Farmer’s Market, and was so charmed by the live music, the diverse booths, the friendly people supporting their neighbors, and local farmers selling their delicious produce and peaches that were indescribably delicious. I went to all of the tasting rooms and was very impressed with the local wines, and still consider Jack’s Blend at Sierra Starr my favorite go-to wine. I visited Rollins Lake, Scott’s Flat Lake, and went swimming in the Yuba River, which has clothing optional sections perfect for avoiding tan lines. I fiddled with the dial

on the radio and found KVMR, falling in love with the local stories and diverse music. I browsed the shops in downtown Grass Valley and Nevada City and ate in many different restaurants, all of them wonderful, and savored ice cream at Lazy Dog Chocolateria. As a musician, I was also impressed with the quality and quantity of local talent; a resource I still have yet to explore. The upcoming shows advertised at the Center for the Arts were remarkable for such a small town, as were the number of music festivals, events, and familyfriendly activities. This place had everything I had dreamed of in a home town for myself, and I just felt called to be here permanently. My boyfriend (now husband) had always wanted to live in Northern California, so he was on board to take this leap of faith with me. We spent the next year looking at houses for rent, applying for jobs, and keeping up with what was happening in town through the Union as well the Outside Inn blog. Several trips and nearly a year later, we found a wonderful house in Alta Sierra and a property manager who was willing to take this leap of faith with us and rent to us even though we had not yet secured jobs in the area (HUGE thanks to Jessica Spinelli at Century 21 Davis Property Management; we could not have gotten here without your belief in us!). On August 5, 2013, we packed up my house into a U-Haul, loaded up my cat and daughter, and moved to a place we had visited a handful of times on the blind belief that we would somehow find a way to make it work. Finding jobs in the area was a challenge, but after a few false starts that were not good fits, or didn’t pay as much as we needed, my husband and I are now both working at jobs that we genuinely enjoy and pay a livable wage. We are all grateful every day that we live in Grass Valley. My daughter, now 11, is in sixth grade at Grass Valley Charter School and for the first time in her life loves going to school and is excited to tell me about what she is learning. We take full advantage of the many opportunities to enjoy our community as much as possible, from Celtic Fest and Worldfest to movies in the park to hiking buttermilk bend trail to the many street festivals in downtown Grass Valley and Nevada City to shopping at our local farmers markets and so much more. On August 21, 2015, we added one more to the population of Grass Valley as our son was born at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. We are so thankful that he will grow up in such an amazing community and cannot wait to see how being raised in this incredible place helps to shape who he becomes. If you are thinking of moving to the area, and feel like it’s the place you belong, my advice is to do it. You will never regret life in paradise.

Dear Judy, Early this morning we kissed our husbands goodbye as they set off on their “adventurous” white water rafting tour and we were out the door right behind them to do our own thing and it ’s going to be a chock-full-of-fun day! After talking to Valerie and hearing her story I asked Gloria to drive me around the area before lunch . I can understand why Valerie fell in love with Grass Valley—it ’s truly remarkable. We stopped at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, voted the most beautiful fairgrounds (it is!) in California, where they hold many of the great fairs and festivals. Gloria and Valerie both said that we must come back for the 4th of July Celebration—the downtown parade and evening fireworks spectacular are doozies!

Gloria thought that it would be fun to start with lunch in the historic downtown . It was difficult to choose a restaurant, they’re all so tempting! We strolled the shops and enjoyed a teeny bit of Valerie’s favorite confection before driving up to the Brunswick area so that I could see (and shop in!!!) some of her favorite boutiques. Since the guys will be gone all day we’re treating ourselves to a spa afternoon , then taking a yoga class before having dinner out. Girl time—Wish you were here with us! Love, Jenn 24

She and her friend Sophie were in art class, and it was fun to watch them create works that will hang in Atria’s “gallery.” Ruth is pretty darn good and I swear that she could be the next Archimboldo or Grandma Moses! Dave wants to show us his handiwork so next stop—the elementary school where he helped build a garden for the Farm to School Program. We all LOVE to Wine and friends of theirs have a vineyard near town so we’re going TASTING this afternoon! I’m sure we’ll have nap time before heading out to another big evening on the town ….Cheers! Dear Judy, Touring Dave’s friend’s vineyard was a real history lesson—not only about growing grapes—but we were surprised to learn that Nevada County was producing wine during the GOLD RUSH! The history of this area is fascinating, and Dave says that we should definitely visit the Nevada County Historical Society. I didn’t realize that his family came here from England and Wales around 1860 and he found information at the Historical Society about his ancestors—they had a GOLD CLAIM! ine roots grow deep in Nevada County. Our vine history stretches back to 1848 when Nevada and Placer Counties were still part of Yuba County. And then came the Gold Rush. San Francisco was the port of entry for tens of thousands of people, all heading east to the gold fields of the Sierras. There was of course, no Bay Bridge. Many took the southern trek around the Bay, passing by Mission San Jose. It became a common sight to see miners with cuttings of mission vines sticking out of their saddlebags as they continued their journey east. Another favorite stopping spot was Smith’s Pomological Gardens on the American River in Sacramento where they picked up Zinfandel cuttings. That was how both mission and zinfandel grapes were originally propagated as the mainstays in Nevada County’s earliest vineyards. By the1860s, saloons were serving their customers wine that was grown and produced in Nevada County. By 1870, there were 450,000 vines in the county representing several hundred acres of grapes. E. G. Waite, a local producer, predicted that one day in Nevada County grapes would be more valuable than gold. During the 1880s, demand for wine was strong. By 1887, there were at least 17 recognized grape growers, 10 of whom produced their own wine. In 1889, Nevada City Winery, as a co-operative for local vineyards, produced 8,000 gallons of wine. It is commonly thought that Prohibition put an end to Nevada County’s wine industry but that is not the case. While commercially produced wine was illegal, that did not mean that production ceased. By 1927, halfway through this remarkable experiment in social engineering, there were more grapes growing in Nevada County than had existed before the start of Prohibition. With Prohibition’s repeal in 1933, half a dozen wineries opened for business in Nevada County but by then the wine market had shifted. Volume and value were all that mattered. Mega producers like Italian Swiss Colony and Gallo dominated while California’s central valley produced an endless source of cheap grapes. Nevada County wineries couldn’t compete. WW II was the final straw and the last of the wineries of that era; Locatelli Winery in Chicago Park closed in the early 1950’s. Things remained dormant until John Callender planted

his Little Wolf Vineyard in the south county in 1974 and the modern era was born. In 1980, Nevada City Winery opened as the first of the newest wave of wineries. Now, once again, there are hundreds of acres of vineyards dotting the county’s rolling hills with more than 20 wineries producing wine. Today, Nevada County offers superb wine touring and tasting opportunities. Make the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce your starting spot for information, maps, and even videos about wineries in the area. Spend an easy afternoon on foot visiting Grass Valley’s award-winning downtown tasting rooms or touring the rural beauty of Nevada County’s back roads visiting wineries. Dear Judy, Wow are we having fun! We’ve been out to dinner and the theater every night—and no 2 evenings have been the same. Tonight we saw a performance at the 150 year old Nevada Theater and I learned that some of the most famous performers of the Gold Rush Era played here. They say that the theater is haunted! Maybe it ’s Lola Montez back to recreate her infamous Spider Dance! Love this postcard of an old 1850’s theater setlook at that detail! Needless to say you’re getting a good idea that this is becoming a favorite place, and I’m looking forward to discovering more. hen the infamous, exotically beautiful, Irish born dancer and actress known as Lola Montez arrived in Grass Valley in 1853 with her third husband, Patrick Hull, performing arts had been part of life in the Gold Country of Nevada County since 1851 when Hamlet Davis built a two-story building at the corner of Broad and Pine Street which featured a grocery store on the ground floor and a reading room of Eastern Newspapers on the upper floor. The theater emerged as the most enduring and appreciated form of popular entertainment, and with public entertainment in high demand, Davis built an addition on the end of the reading room to accommodate a stage and called it the Davis’s Dramatic Hall. Actors and actresses of note came early to the land of gold, performing before easily satisfied and deeply interested audiences. Some of the most memorable names associated with this era included Dr. Robinson as Yankee story teller and Hesekiah Pickerell, one of the most popular troupers of the Gold Rush period. Theaters represented respectability and put communities on the map of civilization. In November of the same year, inspired by Davis’s Dramatic Hall, Main Street merchants combined their resources and built the Jenny Lind (theatre) which stood on the banks of Deer Creek where Nevada Street and the Main Street Bridge intersect. The Chapman Family was engaged to perform at the opening with overwhelmingly successful, and with the advent of theaters, illustrious performers were able to entertain in suitable venues. Not to be outdone by the Nevada City merchants, the Alta Theater opened in Grass Valley in the spring of 1852 on the second floor of a gambling saloon.

In March of 1852 a flood destroyed the Jenny Lind Theater, and Davis’s Dramatic Hall remained the only performance venue. On November 18th, Edwin Booth who went on to become America’s most celebrated dramatic actor, appeared for the first time in Nevada City in a minor role with the Wilmarth Waller Company. Famous Soprano Kate Hayes, known as the Swan of Erin, sang at Davis’s Dramatic Hall in the spring of 1853,. One of her last concerts was at the Alta Theater in Grass Valley on April 18, 1853. The Nevada Journal reported: “The voice of the [Kate Hayes] broke forth in notes of most bewitching sweetness and harmony. The excitement of the audience increased to a furious extent, no doubt with proud ratification that they had heard for once in their lives, the voice that had awakened the admiration of the western world.” In contrast to the dignified and inspiring performance by Miss Hayes, Lola Montez enthralled the audience at Davis’s Dramatic Hall by performing her famous Spider Dance. June 6th of 1854 heralded the opening of Frisbie’s Promenade Concert Hall, which soon after became known as Frisbie’s Theater. Lyman P. Frisbie, owner of Frisbie’s Restaurant and Saloon added the 800--seat structure to his holding at the corner of Main and Coyote Street a few doors above the Ott Assay Office. When in 1856 the Virginia House was destroyed by a fire it also destroyed Frisbie’s Theatre. Edwin Booth had been playing an ill- timed week’s engagement at Frisbie’s and his troupe lost many of their costumes, theatrical props, and scenic effects in the fire. The fire also destroyed Hamlet Davis’s Dramatic Hall. Frisbie in partnership with Charles Bain opened Brisbie’s Nevada Theatre with H.A.

Warwick’s troupe in ‘The Merchant of Venice.’ Sadly, that theater also burnt to the ground after a fire was started in a Chinese wash house on Broad Street. After the three-story Bailey House Hotel, at Broad and Bridge Streets, burned down in 1863, the Nevada Theatre Association began fundraising for a new building. Stock was sold at $100 a share, and a ball was held in June 1865 to cover the remaining costs for the rustic vernacular Victorian building. Nevada Theater’s grand opening was a mere three months later on September 9, 1865, and the first performance was the John Poole two-act comedy entitled The Dutch Governor, or ‘Twould Puzzle a Conjurer. This final incarnation of the Nevada Theater remains standing to this day and features a number of quality productions each year by Community Asian Theater of the Sierras (CATS), LeGacy Productions, and other various troupes and artists who stand in the spotlight in the footsteps of some of the greats of the wild west and beyond.
